thinly veiled autobiography.......2007-10-01
There is no denying Stegner's iconic status as the dean of "western writers." While Big Rock Candy Mountain isn't actually his first novel- it feels like a first novel, and a startling, impressive effort to boot. Big Rock is supposed to be an autobiograhical tale that charts the travails of Stegner's own nuclear family- Dad Bo- a rough and ready frontiersman who is always a day late and a dollar short, his mom Elsa- a near runaway from the Scandanavian settlements of Minnesota- who married the first man she fell in love with, brother Chet and little Bruce- who, as it turns out, is the Stegner character.
Despite some peculiar narrative technique (including a tedious lapse into second person narration "You take the hose to the cellar, you wash the potatoes by hand" etc during a few chapters of the book, the pacing and observation is first rate, as you would expect from a master of american literature. Three or four times during the course of reading Big Rock, I found myself looking at the copyright to verify that this book had indeed been published in 1943.
Stegner's style is certainly "naturalism" and it's hard not to hear the echoes of Theodore Dreiser's "Sister Carrie" in the character of the Elsa. However, the beautiful, evocative descriptions of little towns in North Dakota, wheat farms in Saskatschewan, Montana roads during the prohbition era, and depression era Salt Lake City are what kept me reading to the very one.
Although big rock is 500+ pages, it's a pretty quick read- I managed to read all but the last hundred pages over the course of a hot, lazy labor day weekend sunday.
A good read, but I wish Elsa had some backbone .......2007-02-15
I enjoyed the book. Stegner does a good job evoking life around this period (1900-1930s), and describing realistic characters. However, the mother - she was portrayed as a saint - was exasperating with her infinite patience and understanding of her husband's inexcusable behavior.
I'm sure there were and are women like Elsa, but I would characterize them as co-dependent and lacking an iota of self-respect/esteem, rather than as extraordinarily kind and wise. For example, it's truly pathetic how she apologizes to one and all for being so much trouble when she's deathly ill.
Bleak House on the Prairie.......2006-04-12
This is probably one of the darkest, most merciless books I've ever read -- exceeded only in bleakness by Sigrid Undset's "Master of Hestviken." I picked it up expecting a book about pioneers, but "Little House on the Prairie" this is not, though it was written around the same time (early 1940's). Imagine pioneering not with the gentle, kind, intelligent, and progressive Charles Ingalls as your father -- but with his unstable, bipolar, obsessive-compulsive, violent, abusive and sadistic twin. This book could serve as a nifty handbook for women on the perils of marrying a sexy baseball-playing "bad boy." The mother suffers, and suffers, and suffers some more -- the father acts horrible, and more horrible, then redeems himself somewhat, but eventually devolves into one of the most truly despicable characters in modern fiction, whilst mom is martyred by her own bad choice in a man. Seriously, there were moments in this book when I was shocked -- SHOCKED! -- and I don't consider myself a lightweight. All the same, I just couldn't put this book down! It's an incredibly interesting portrayal of the tragectory of a f***ed-up American family 1880-1920, including the infamous 1918 flu epidemic. And the father really is a fascinating character; if you are an amateur psychologist it's fun to identify his various pathologies.
A bold and raw work by one of America's greatest writers.......2005-03-06
Wallace Stegner wrote "The Big Rock Candy Mountain" relatively early in his career (1943, at age 34), and the book reflects the author's enormous talents, which were still developing at that time. Stegner tells the tale of Bo Mason, who leads a rootless life on the fringes of the law. Mason is a bootlegger, gambler and precious metals speculator. Each peak he achieves is higher than his last, and each valley is deeper. This is true both financially and in his relationship with his wife, Elsa, and two sons, Chet and Bruce. Some reviewers point out that the story is somewhat autobiographical. That's probably a safe assumption. But it's also the story of the American West a century ago, where raw optimism, the struggle for acceptance, and harsh realities shaped people's existence.
The harsh reality of "The Big Rock Candy Mountain" is that it isn't one of Stegner's best works. Of course, that's a very high standard. Readers will understandably have great expectations when diving into this book, and some may be disappointed. For example, the younger son's seething hatred towards his father is introduced early in the book and is central to the conclusion, but is poorly developed in the interim chapters. Likewise, the voice of the book drifts between the 3rd person and the 2nd person. This gives the reader a voyeuristic glimpse into each character's personal thoughts. It's a nice gimmick, but awkwardly executed.
On an absolute scale, this book is a no-brainer 5 stars. But relative to other Stegner novels, "The Big Rock Candy Mountain" has some minor flaws. Read it and you'll certainly enjoy it. But you'll appreciate even more the experience of reading the early efforts of one of America's greatest 20th century writers.
A Memorable Experience.......2004-10-04
I read Wallace Stegner's "Angle of Repose" and liked it very much, so I decided to try this one, his first major novel. I enjoyed this book even more than the later, Pulitzer Prize winning work. "The Big Rock Candy Mountain" is a more straightforward narrative than "Angle of Repose." It is obviously a memoir of Stegner's own childhood, along with extensive material based loosely on his parents' lives.
Stegner's descriptions of life in the upper western plains during the first two decades of the twentieth century read with an amazing freshness and clarity. The scenes of childhood and family life around the time of the First World War leave unforgettable impressions. The details are lively and crystal clear.
Stegner structures his novel with a sure knack for keeping the reader's interest. He has an instinct for creating tension within discrete episodes, which are well paced throughout the book. You live through blizzards, droughts, an epidemic, and even a car chase with bootleggers. There are also beautiful descriptions of the west and plenty of psychological and ethical dilemmas to ponder.
In some ways this book reminded me of the Nebraska novels of Willa Cather and the works of John Steinbeck. However, the characters in "The Big Rock Candy Mountain" don't always show the nobility of Cather's pioneers; nor are they primarily victims of natural and economic disasters like the Joad family in "The Grapes of Wrath." The people in Stegner's novel make decisions, often tragic ones, and live out the their responsibilities for those decisions not only as they affect themselves, but also as they impact on those around them.
As is widely acknowledged, this novel is about the American Dream - the drive for status, wealth, and easy money -- the golden opportunity just beyond the rainbow. Looking at shows like "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" or "The Apprentice," it is easy to see that these beliefs are still alive and well in our popular culture. Stegnar is unambiguous in his condemnation of this mentality. Yet, he expresses his views with compassion and understanding. Stegner describes forces that are integral parts of our heritage and tradition, and he does so in a way that even today should appeal to readers of any political persuasion.

Excellent Read!.......2007-09-07
I really love Katie Macalister's books. Her heroines are not perfect Barbie dolls and the men are not all perfect alphas. I laughed out loud at several pages, I even had to put the book away because it was so funny. I was in public eating lunch.
Jim is my favorite sidekick. Remember that saying about a good friend bailing you out of jail, but a best friend will be with you in jail. That's Jim.
Can't wait for the next installment.
Super Reader.......2007-08-27
This is pretty lightweight stuff, meant to be so, I believe. Sort of somewhere between Men In Black and Midsomer Murders.
A clueless girl finds out she is a Guardian, basically supposed to keep watch over a portal to make sure not too many demons and monsters come through. She has a few super powers to help with that she starts to learn, including demon summoning, which means she has a big black demon dog to follow her around.
Seems it is tricky as she has a dragon she wants to shag, as well.
Stupid.......2007-08-05
These books slay me. How this sort of rubbish gets published I'll never know. AND why do I read them? I should have learnt from last time. **Sigh**
A Silly shallow story about Aisling Grey, a supposed Guardian who is a Wyvern's Mate. Of course not any Wyvern but the Leader of the Green Wyvern (Do Heroines EVER love the Janitor?) The Plot is thin at best and it kills me that trees died for this drivel. Very poor quality 4/10
the 4.5 reader rating is wrong.......2007-07-03
usually the reader ratings on amazon are dead on, but not this time. i am glad i checked this out at the library. i read the entire book, just because i hate not finishing a story. i was 2/3 in before the story picked up. don't understand how she could not know she was a guardian or find someone who was willing to teach her how to be a guardian, then all of a sudden she just knew how to access her magic. i did like the dog, had the best lines. i also liked how she didn't submitt to drake even though she was his mate. i have noticed that mate automaticly fall in love without know the person. i am going to read the next book in the series, maybe it gets better
Okay.......2007-06-23
I am a huge fan of the vampire books, but could not get into the guardian books at all. :(

Customer Reviews:
A poor ending.......2003-12-15
The first two books in the trilogy were good. The third one is not. It seems like the author either ran out of ideas or grew bored, and so plots are either cut off abruptly or forgotten. Examples:
--We learned in the earlier books that Niccolo in the hunting pack has a secret, and the last scene he is in has him trying to spy on a Lasombra elder. Why? Well, we never get to know why, because he is killed and that is that.
--Simon Peter obviously has a spiritual development going, and he interacts with the pack priest on friendly terms in the earlier books. Here, however, he is all of the sudden the pack priest's enemy, and he is abruptly killed off.
--The elder Roxana, who wanted to follow in Lucita's footsteps as a Lasombra renegade, is hardly mentioned at all, even though her torment is explored extensively in the earlier books. Does she resign herself to her fate as one of the Sabbat again? Does she still plan to flee? We never know.
--Who, I ask, manipulated the minds of the Lasombra Methuselahs so they forgot the truth about Lasombra's diablerie? When the manipulation is revealed it frightens the Lasombra elders immensely, and even in the third book, after the destruction of the nine mystics, do they ask this question. I was expecting this to be the focus for the rest of the book, but it is simply forgotten.
There are also smaller threads abrubtly cut. In the second book the Lasombra leader Timofiew asks Andrew a question, which he must answer when he is absolutely sure he has the right answer. But we never get to hear that answer. I suppose the author couldn't make up an answer that was interesting enough. Also, the spy Colin plans to ditch his contract to destroy Lucita by making it only appear as if he is trying to fulfill it; we learn this the moment he gets the contract forced on him. However, nothing is made of this. He is simply destroyed -- and his name has changed! Amazing! And very sloppy.
The Abyssal mystics are killed very quickly, and the whole point of the trilogy comes to a halt. Then Lucita tries her hand at being archbishop of Madrid, and I have to say -- what? What does this have to do with anything? What about the manipulation of the Methuselahs? Sure, following the workings of archbishops can be interesting, but it has no place in this story. How disappointing that the author apparently didn't know what to do with the last 17 percent of the trilogy.
All in all, a poor ending to an otherwise good story.
Exquisite Journey of the Spirit..........2003-05-28
I first came across Lucita on a website providing signature characters from each WoD Masquerade clan. After that I fell across her in the Lasombra Clan Novel from the Clan Series. She was cool then, but this Lasombra Trilogy really gave her more dimension and Bruce Baugh really unfolded a wonderful story that could be used as a template for any character from any particular genre of literature. I liked the seemingly inside look into the machinations of the Lasombra clan and their Amici Noctis / Les amis noir / Brether Nokw / Friends of the Night
and the inclusion of Lasombra of note, such as Gratiano, Montano, and Zarathustra - the Cainite ruler of Antioch. If you're into Abyssal Mysticism, the Fallacy of Gratiano's daublerie of the Lasombra Antediluvian, or a keener understanding of the sociology of Sabbat packs and the power struggles that crown or depose an Archbishop ... you'll truly find this 3rd and final installment of the trilogy a satisfying final bite of a delicious dessert. I found it much more fitting an end to the protagonist's "journey" then what was presented in the Tremere trilogy .. with Antigone Baines. But then I may have simply missed the point.
I highly recommend you read all three books in this trilogy and even go on to acquire more resource material on the Lasombra.

Customer Reviews:
not what I expected.......2007-08-14
Gary Null is kind of an enigmatic figure. I agree that nutrition and health are unknown to most doctors and that professionalism more generally is a threat to human happiness. There's some other stuff that goes with his holistic views however.
The material here is very different from what Null shares with his radio audience. Several of the protocols and diets countenance eating meat in some form. Anyone who knows Null knows that this is antithetical to what he says on PBS and his radio shows. The author draws so heavily from other sources that his own nutritional views are lost.
The book is large and topical. Worried about cancer? There's a chapter on prevention. The other chapters cover things from lupus to sexual dysfunction. The recipes included are pretty sparse but good. This is the pattern more generally; information is sparse and wide ranging, but there's seldom enough to hold interest. As a compendium of recent empirical research, it's okay, but many people would probably benefit by a more targeted book on a single theme such as juicing. Like Null himself, I suggest checking it out at the library before buying.
Null's more controversial views on AIDs and religion are not present in this work. This is good because his brand of Baby Boomer, sub-Marxist, backwoods sublimated fundamentalist fervor gets tiresome sometimes. Null has actually transformed his childhood religion and rural milieu into a weird New Age religion centered on energy transfer and democracy. Despite the flaws, Null is an important populist voice in challenging the status quo.
Irresponsible and Dangerous! Don't waste your money!.......2007-04-20
If you've ever heard Gary Null on the radio, you would know he promotes what I consider to be dangerous and irresponsible beliefs regarding AIDS, psychiatric meds, mercury fillings, etc. which can be misleading to the uninformed. Don't waste your money!
Inspiring and great advice that is easy to use........2007-01-29
I love Dr. Gary Null's books and documentary films. I have been a fan of his for years. He is honest and genuine in helping others create and maintain health. This book is another masterpiece of wisdom for the individual that wants to know the truth about health and well-being. And if you are not familiar with or have not seen his documentary films yet, you are in for a treat... his truth shines through.
Excellent resource.......2007-01-04
This is one of the best natural health books I have come across! Not only does it have pages and pages of information, by condition: skin, menstruation, mental health issues etc, but it discusses how to these conditions develop, and what we can do once we develop them. The book is especially valuable because it contains an index of natural health practitioners by practice and by state in the end of the book. Many chapters outline the mainstream as well as the alternative points of view so that the reader can make the best informed choice possible. This is an excellent reference for any family library.
Get 'Get Healthy Now!' now.......2007-01-04
I really enjoy Get Healthy Now! by Dr. Gary Null. Like most of Dr. Null's book, Get Healthy Now! offers clear and assessable information to layman and professional alike. The information on various alternative remedies and natural treatment is organized in a very helpful and thoughtful way to allow you to understand the issues succinctly. The book also serves to encourage the readers to help themselves, which I think is one of Gary's strongest attribute. Let's face it; Information without motivation rarely works in the long term. Get Healthy Now! was written not to be overly complex, but in a direct manner that make knowledge understandable. Get Healthy Now! is another winner by Dr. Null.

Customer Reviews:
No ordinary cookbok.......2003-06-25
I've been wanting to practice European cooking for sometime, so I decided to start with Europe's first family, the Basques. This is a continent that takes pride in its sophisticated culinary tastes, and this cookbook shows that the Basques are no exception. The section on wild mushrooms alone demonstrates the refinement of Basque cuisine. The recipes are excellent (although they can be quite difficult), but I was most impressed by the author's prose apart from the recipes. This is one of the few cookbooks I've read that qualifies as good literature, and it deserves to be reviewed and appreciated as such. Moments of lyrical excellence shine through even in translation, and Sevilla should be commmended for crafting such a unique work. Its almost an anthropological study, but in the new style that shies away from dry exposition in favor of a more personal engagement. I recommend this book to cooks and readers alike.

Book Description
Cyclists can discover a plethora of classic two-wheelers, from the elegant high-wheelers of the 1880s to the balloon-tired whitewalls of the 1950s and the sparkly ape-hanger muscle bikes of the 1970s. This colourful look back at the history of the bicycle covers such manufacturers as Schwinn, Huffy, Columbia, Monark, Roadmaster, Shelby, and others

Great pics shame about the text.......2000-10-30
The pictures are superb. I would have liked a few more actual historic ones. Lots of the bikes have been rebuilt or refurbished. It is an entertaining light history. However it is mildly frustrating to read that a post-war Phillips bike costs only $34 and not know how much a normal Schwinn would have cost in comparison. There is much discussion about heavy and light bikes but no supporting technical data. However what the book lacks in technical data it makes up for in quality pictures.

The Golden Age of the Bicycle.......2006-10-26
In Europe and the United States there was a brief period that roughly spanned the 1890s. During that period, people of all ages began abandoning one troublesome, expensive and polluting form of tranportation, the horse, without adopting the automobile, which was at least as troublesome, expensive and polluting. That was the Golden Age of the Bicycle. If I were given the power to rewrite history, I'd be tempted to delay the invention of the car long enough, perhaps twenty years, to give our cities, our neighborhoods and our societies a chance to establish themselves around the bicycle, before I would allow the automobile to come along.
Unfortunately, I can't do that. But I can recommend books from this golden age to bicycle lovers so they can get a glimpse of what might have been. This book, Wheel Within a Wheel is one. But be sure to check out Around the World on a Bicycle, the story of the first person to circle the world on a bicycle, as well as Across Asia on a Bicycle, which describes the Asian leg of the second circumnavigation of the world by bicycle and the first using the modern 'safety' bike.
Not what you expect........2006-06-30
The language is tedious and trying - old fashioned and trite. And the topic is boring. Other than that, not a great little book but for some interest in women's issues.
A true gem.......2000-02-21
Frances Willard was a hardy, clear-spoken New England Temperance/Suffrage activist of the late 19th century. Until age 16, she had free run of the world, but then was bound by the corsets and hoops and restrictions of womanhood. That is, until she turned 53 and received the gift of "a wheel" -- a safety bicycle -- from a friend in the movement. Her reflections on riding the bicycle are amusing and profound. It was very much a community effort for her; she describes one lesson in which four friends stand at the corners (including one at each side of the handlebars, counterbalancing them) and walk her down the drive. BUT this book is ultimately more about life than it is about cycling. It is like a journal of all the insights sparked by this return to the unfettered freedom of Willard's youth. And for that, it is precious and challenging. The language reminded me of Mark Twain's dry observations on his own habits and predilections, and Willard is certainly his equal in exercising her powers of observation and analysis. Ultimately she reflects a universal experience: the experience of flight on two wheels that attracts so many of us to the sport and discipline of the bicycle.

Thomas Stevens, with a new introduction and notes by Thomas PaulyIn 1884, Thomas Stevens left San Francisco on a Columbia high-wheeler with the outrageous goal of becoming the first man to ride a bicycle across the United States. When he reached Boston, he decided to continue around the world, and soon sailed to London for the ride across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The high-wheeler was heavy and cumbersome, his supplies were limited to socks, a spare shirt, and a slicker that doubled as tent and bedroll, and much of the country he traversed was wild. Yet he persevered, recording his colorful and often harrowing adventures during the three-year odyssey in a classic of 19th century adventure and travel writing.About the Author:Thomas Pauly is a professor of English at the University of Delaware. He has written on a broad range of subjects, including books on Elia Kazan and the musical Chicago. Account of the first man to ride a bicycle around the world A classic first published in 1887

Across Asia on a Bicycle.......2006-09-29
If you like this sort of book, you'll also like one about the second circumnavigation of the world by bicycle. That journey, taken by two recent Washington University graduates between 1890 and 1893, was also the first on the modern "safety" bike and the first to take the difficult north China route across the Gobi Desert. On the way, they also became the first Americans to climb Mount Ararat. In this book, they describe the Asian leg of their journey, at that time the "longest continuous land journey ever made around the world."
That book is Across Asia on a Bicycle (ISBN: 1587420201).
Some brave pair should repeat their journey, or at least the Asian leg, which is described in detail in the book. It'd be fascinating to compare what they saw with what can be seen today.

San Francisco to Boston, England to the Balkans, Turkey to Afghanistan, India, China and Japan: Stevens boldly cycled where no bicycler had gone before!
On the recommendation of a friend, I've been looking for this book for years. So I was delighted to learn that it had just been republished for the first time since 1902. Yes, 1902: Stevens started his trip in 1884. This intrepid wheelman (note: "wheel" is singular because Stevens' cycle was so dominated by the 50 inch front wheel he would often just refer to it as his "wheel") recorded his adventures and thoughts about the people and lands he visited during 13,500 miles of cycling.
As you might expect from a bicycle journalist, Stevens carefully describes the riding quality of most of the roads and trails he followed, comments on his many headers, and joked about the amount of food he could eat at the end of a long day pedaling a 41 pound bicycle. But the book is far more than a cycling story, it is a glimpse into a world that is long-gone yet still relevant. He saw the hostility between different ethnic groups in the Balkans, he visited Kurdish nomads in what is now northern Iraq, commented on how the mullahs were preventing Iran from modernizing, etc. A man of his times, some of his words (e.g., not particularly flattering portraits of the Native Americans that he met) would definitely not be considered politically correct 110 years after he wrote them. But all in all, it was a delightful read.
Quite a feat!.......2003-11-03
It's amazing to think that Stevens was able to complete such a journey over 100 years ago on such a beastly bike. With no gears and bad roads, it seems he had to walk (or trundle) his bike as much as he rode it. It is especially interesting to see just how different some parts of the world are now, and yet just how little other parts of the word have changed since his journey. More than a travel book or bicycle adventure, the book is an interesting time capsule from long ago that is a pleasure to read!
Back in print at last!.......2001-02-06
Truly a classic traveler's tale, one that I'd been tempted to pay $100+ for a used copy of last year. This is an excellent reprint of the original, with all its illustrations, plus some of Stevens's other writings on his trip, with a well-footnoted introduction.

Must for woodcut printmakers.......2000-12-13
This book and the companion book, Gustave Baumann: Nearer to Art, by Martin F. Krause et al (1993, Museum of New Mexico Press)detail the life and work of one of the great printmakers. Baumann's works are exquisite and this book details his working methods and graphically displays his multi block technique. I have read and re-read these books several times, if for no other reason than to know more about the life of a simple artist going about the straightforward work of making timeless and breathtaking works of art.

Designers of the 50's.......2004-06-05
My sister has just bought a 1950's ranch home with some original features. I was hoping this book would help celebrate the house and give some ideas as to decor. Instead, it is a good overview of the furniture designers who influenced the furniture of the time. It's nice, but not what I was looking for, which was the physical living space/furnishings of the middle class of the 50's.
Mid-century is coming back strong!.......2002-10-25
Not that it ever really went away, but it appears that the GEN-X crowd is interesting in filling their lofts, condos, etc. with a touch of class and history. Those in the design know have always favored the elements of design that existed in the 50's and 60's, like they say good design is truly timeless. It would have been nice to see more coverage on DUNBAR and Edward Wormley.
This is a great book - buy it!

A Perfect Book!.......2006-02-17
I LOVE vintage hot rods and custom cars. This is one of the best (if not the best) book of it's type that I've seen. Mostly all-color VINTAGE photos of cars from the fifties and the scene that surrounded it (covering other aspects like magazines, models, stickers, t-shirts, record/book covers, etc.) Wow! The photos are amazing. This is the real stuff. And there's no text to gunk things up (just a nice introduction). It's a smaller book - digest sized - but oh so cool! Any Rockabilly or Rat Rodder will love this.
VINTAGE "OLD SKOOL" PHOTOS.......2005-11-03
All of these photos are the real thing from long ago. Thus, it's a completely authentic experience of just what the cars, girls, hot rods, fashions, dragsters ,etc looked like back then. Scant text except for captions but that's not a minus. These great old photos speak for themselves. A great little book!
