Book Description
As one of New York's top sex therapists, Dr. Morgan Snow sees everything from the abused to the depraved. The Butterfield Institute is the sanctuary where she tries to heal these battered souls.
The Scarlet Society is a secret club of twelve powerful and sexually adventurous women. But when a photograph of the body of one of the men they're recruited to dominate -- strapped to a gurney, the number 1 inked on the sole of his foot -- is sent to the New York Times, they are shocked and frightened. Unable to cope with the tragedy, the women turn to Dr. Morgan Snow. But what starts out as grief counseling quickly becomes a murder investigation, with any one of the twelve women a potential suspect.
The case leads Detective Noah Jordan -- a man with whom Morgan has shared a brief, intense connection -- to her office. He fears the number on the man's foot hints that the killings have just begun. With her hands tied by her professional duty, Morgan is dangerously close to the demons in her own mind -- and the flesh-and-blood killer.
Customer Reviews:
The Delilah is a delight.......2007-07-28
I picked up this book from the donation pile at the desk, The original was in such bad shape that I bought a new one. It has prompted me to buy more of her books! If you are interested in a book that you just cannot put down - a who-dunnit with class, humor and chilling realism - READ IT!!
A terrific read.......2006-06-02
I have enjoyed all of MJ Rose's novels, but The Delilah Complex represents a huge leap forward. It is psychologically astute, dramatically gripping, and erotically complex and convincing. It was very hard to put down, and I look forward to her new book eagerly.
cannot wait until Venus Fix.......2006-04-09
The plot in underlined in several of the reviews below, but, nevertheless, this was another one of her books that I simply could not put down or stop thinking about when I was laying down to go to sleep at night. Rose has managed to get her audiences tangled up in the plot. I really did not figure out the ending or the perpetrator, since I was already envisioning someone else, but that is what makes me love her books even more. I was taking breaks at work to read, in between classes and even while playing cards with my boyfriend, that's how good it was. If you read Halo Effect, the first one with Dr. Morgan Snow, then you definitely want to read this one. The chemistry between Morgan and Noah is incredible and I just couldn't wait until they got together, which they did, and very vividly. Great book, definitely worth it.
Another smart, sexy thriller!.......2006-04-07
M. J. Rose first caught my attention with the LIP SERVICE,
an erotic thriller . . . since then, I believe I've read everything else
by her and haven't been disappointed.
So when I saw her latest was out, THE DELLILAH COMPLEX, I made it
a point to read it as soon as I possibly could . . . and I must say that
this is still another addition to her list of smart, sexy tales that
I've enjoyed--and you will too.
THE DELILAH COMPLEX is the second in Rose bills as "a
Dr. Morgan Snow novel" (she first appeared in THE HALO
EFFECT) . . . this time, Snow is being brought to work with a group
of women who make up a secret group known as the Scarlet
Society . . . when bodies start disappearing, the members become
concerned and they turn to her for help . . . . yet what starts out
as counseling quickly becomes a murder investigation.
Though I read and very much enjoyed THE HALO OFFECT, I like
how Rose made it possible for you to enjoy her latest book
without having to have read the first book in the series . . . also, the
more I read this quick-moving book, the more I felt for the main
character and her teenage daughter . . . and I kept wanting
to find out what was going to happen next.
Rose writes extremely well . . . there were several memorable
passages; among them:
* I poured salt into the water. Supposedly salt makes the water boil faster
and the pasta taste better. I saw that once on an episode of MARTHA,
and anything I can do to make the food I cook taste better, I remember.
I seem to be missing the cooking gene; I can even ruin prepared food.
* We all lie. We learn when we are small children and see an overweight
woman in the pool and cry out--Mommy, look, there's a fat lady--and
our mothers tell us that isn't nice, that we shouldn't say things that
can hurt people's feelings. Because in some cases it's kinder to
lie, we are taught to ingest moral cyanide in the name of civility. And
then one ay we get to a point in our lives--perhaps the point that
Shelby Rush was at that moment--when the truth is the only way
we can begin to help and heal, but still we obfuscate and hide because
it is what we are used to doing.
* He listened intently, reading my face, my expressions--paying
attention to what I was saying and what I wasn't. That's what he did.
He listened to me. It was how he'd seduce me, by asking questions
no one had ever asked me: about how I felt listening to patients all
day long, about what it was like taking in all the pain and confusion
and processing it. And for a while, I had luxuriated in his questions.
Talked and talked. Frantically. Wildly. Like a butterfly that had
been caught in a net for hours and then suddenly let go.
more sex.......2006-02-01
This book I couldn't put down. Ok, I had to. But I kept coming back to it before any of the others. I haven't read the first Morgan book, but you can be sure it is going to the top of my TBR pile. Morgan is contacted by a secret society to assist them with their issues - someone is killing off the men they invite to their events. Their events, by the way, usually involve domination and sex. Morgan struggles with the morality issues as well as the privacy issues once she, and the police, realize that the men that are being killed are connected. There are a lot of twists and turns is this mystery - once again the Cajun character has seduced me - but I thought it was great and I never suspected the ending.

Customer Reviews:
enjoyable but..........2007-08-29
Overall I enjoyed the book. It was funny, and the chemistry between the characters was steamy without being trashy. I like a regency romances that expand my vocabulary- it makes me feel like reading romances isn't totally wasting my brain. I did feel that the story dragged a little in the middle, and based on other regencies I've read, I think they didn't emphasize enough how beyond the pale it would have been for him to open the Red and Black and at the same time they over emphasized her expectation of still being treated like a lady after becoming a governess. Also some of the exchanges felt too modern.
Still the pluses out numbered the minuses.
Not her best but Metzger's second rate.......2007-06-11
is still my idea of a wonderful time.
The only thing that might keep it from my keeper shelf was the heroine. I got tired of her harping about her Good Name and not being seen with the hero so that her reputation might be preserved. She came across as a ninny. I didn't see what Jack found attractive....She did redeem herself slightly by dealing well with Harriet the demon child and later on, she's less of a pill. I almost put it down, which never happens with Metzger.
But the hero, the secondary characters the fun of the Metzger style make it worth the money.
Very Enjoyable Read.......2007-01-24
Maybe it's because I've read so much pap lately, but when I chanced upon this book, I was delighted. Bright, literate dialogue laced with laugh-out-loud humor, a heroine who stayed in character and was not prototypically gorgeous, and lots of side characters with personality plus - including a child patterned after several I recall from my teaching days. The story line stands alone just fine; I have not read the book's predecessor. Metzger is an author who "gets" the difference between sex and sexy, too, and that fact alone should propel her to the top of the contemporary historical romance list. Check out my Amazon list of favorite historical romance novels and you'll find I just added this book to it.
....partially written .......2006-08-11
The book is lighthearted and a slightly humorous regency.
Although the writing and storyline had me reminiscing about the kind of books that I would have found very interesting when I was in middle school, I still enjoyed the lightness of it.
No strong plot, most of the storyline was dealing with the reputation of a gentle bred woman and her relationship with a debaucher.
Don't expect any hidden secrets or dark past.
There were neither intriguing aspects in the novel nor emotional palpitations to make you not want to put the book down. As a matter of fact it was needlessly easy for me to skim through pages at a time because the same thoughts were repeated over and over again from chapter to chapter. I didn't know how many times or in how many ways one could lament about a soiled reputation.
All in all, because I have enjoyed Ms Metzger's work in the past and I'm a little partial to her I'll rate this book 3 stars. I'm also in no hurry nor do I care to read about the lost Endicott Sister in the last book of the trilogy. But since I do own the book in my library, hopefully when I have no other choice I just might oblige myself.
highly readable.......2006-06-10
Makes sense without having read the first book of the trilogy, Ace of Hearts. Not as strong as that book, but highly readable, exhibiting Metzger's usual humor.

Is BUYING TIME by Mondo Fax the Singing Judge the sort of fiction we will be reading more and more often in the future? I hope so. Its high time to give up delving into the stale old past. This book is futuristic, well written, insightful, and more than anything very enjoyable. I recommend it warmly.

THIS IS A GREAT READ! VERY UNIQUE!.......2001-11-06
This book was recommended by a friend of mine, and I read it on a plane. I found myself drawn to the crazy plot, and the characters. The fantasy brings home some real issues such as generational bridging, ethnic and cultural diversity, as well as the value of time. It's easy to get through, and left me with a great feeling.
Refrshingly Different.......2001-11-05
I very much enjoyed the evolution of each one of the characters in the story. Coming from diverse backgrounds, they brought with them individual values specific to their lifestyles.
The writing is engaging, witty, and thought provoking, and the characters relatable.
Once I got started, I couldn't stop!.......2001-09-27
This book cleverly takes ordinary people of diverse backgrounds into a place where time is not given away free. I especially enjoyed the yarns, and the characters who revealed themselves and grew as the story did. I highly recommend this.

Scholars say that the original Tao Te Ching is a poem. Like a poem, this version of the Tao Te Ching is not meant to be read in one breath from front to back, but is to be at intervals internalized and contemplated. Jane English's haunting black-and-white photos that undulate in and out on every page act as glycerin elixirs, helping the words slide into our souls for patient digestion. The photographs--of a glistening spider web, cloud-enveloped mountain tops, reflections on water, leaves in the sunlight--are as serenely lyrical as the ancient text, itself.
Book Description
Available for the first time in a handy, easy-to-use size, here is the most accessible and authoritative modern English translation of the ancient Chinese classic. This new Vintage edition includes an introduction and notes by the well-known writer and scholar of philosophy and comparative religion, Jacob Needleman.

wow.......2007-09-21
its a great way to center your mind and reflect daily! No matter where you are in your life each passage pertains to you in one way or another. I hope everyone buys a copy and is as moved daily as I am!
Waste of A Tree.......2007-09-11
In the name of art (I assume) some poor tree gave its life for a lot of empty space, black and white photos, words of questionable value, and a book too large to fit most book shelves. All could have been done in a 59 cent pamphlet.
Can one understand Tao Te Ching without examples?.......2007-08-20
This is a nice translation, but I doubt that one can understand the essence of Tao Te Ching without knowing how to practice the philosophy. For example, I have been studying Tao Te Ching and practicing Tai Chi (which implements the philosophy of Tao Te Ching) and Qi-Gong (meditation) for two decades, and always thought I understood the essence of Tao Te Ching. However, only after I studied Warren Buffett's philosophy did I suddenly realize the real power of Taoism Warren Buffett and Tao Te Ching: A Modern Investor and an Age-Old Philosophy. While I am not sure whether Warren Buffett has ever read Tao Te Ching (he has never quoted Tao Te Ching), he practices essentially the same principles of Taoism (desirelessness, inactivity, thrift, contentment, noncompetition, humility, etc) in his daily life, business management and investment. I have read numerous annotations by ancient Chinese scholars and Taoists, and found no one has been able to put these principles into practice so successfully like Warren Buffett, (ironically) a western investor who has never read the original scripture of Tao Te Ching.
easy to read and understand tao.......2007-05-16
This is the most concise and practical version/translation of the tao I have yet to encounter. if you are interested in practical and insightful readings of the Tao this is your version. It is not complicated like some of the other versions. The authors english words are modern, not like other translations that require a translation of it to understand it (alister's version). Another bonus of this book is the amazing pictures that accompany each of the passages, these can really help with image meditation.
Inner Peace.......2007-05-13
The words and phrases cause thoughtful reflection and as one reads there is a feeling that evolves like brook water over stones - it is centering. A wonderful addition - bedside comfort at its best.

This book delves deep into coffee. It covers history, culture around the world, and information on coffee varieties and how to brew a good cup. The end includes fantastic recipes. The best thing is that the book is very well-written, a joy to read.

-Coffee legends, fables, and history
-Brewing methods and tips
-Coffee traditions in countries throughout the world
-Appraisal of coffee types, from Ankola to Yunnan
-Tips on making the perfect cappuccino, espresso, or caffee latte

An Unexciting Potporri on Origins and Uses of Coffee.......1999-09-08
After reading books on this subject by Thorn and Kummer it was a real disappointment to me to find that this so-called "ultimate guide" fell far short. If your interest lies more in the way coffee is served and consumed here and in other countries this may hold your interest. (The author's dissertation on U.S.practices manages somehow, even there, to omit any references to the influence of the key people at Peets, Starbucks, and Allegro, for example.) It is far too shallow for my taste in the areas of coffee selection by type and location (pros and cons) and blending techniques.
An extraordinary book for the true coffee connoisseur!.......1999-07-26
After having read this book, I can now say that Diana Rosen is one of my favorite authors! Her COMPANION is an incredible guide to coffee around the world, as well as to enjoying it in your own home. As a coffee lover for many years -- I don't simply drink coffee, I *savor* it -- I was thrilled to see the research Ms. Rosen obviously put into this work. This study of "the magic bean" is one I'll keep. . .I consider it to be the definitive work, and it has a permanent place on (where else?) my coffee table.
Customer Reviews:
Agreed - this is THE book.......2001-04-05
I have an embarassingly extensive library on Tea and Coffee, this is the top shelf. As good as it gets, thank you Mr. Pratt.
This is THE book on tea!.......1998-07-11
This book introduced me to the wonders of the tea leaf! Because of Norwood's book I am now an avid tea drinker. This book is ideal for the beginning tea drinker as well for the refined. You will use this book throughout your tea drinking adventures---it will not sit on your bookshelf collecting dust. Included is tea history, descriptions of each type of tea, methods of brewing, tea utensils, health aspects, tea rooms, and a big list of tea vendors (including my favorite: Upton Tea Imports).
I have not seen a better book out there on tea than this one. highly reccommended.

Customer Reviews:
Interior Design Student.......2007-01-12
For anyone who wants a basic, practical, concise, no nonsense understanding of color theory, this is the book for you. I found the examples in Chapter 3 most helpful when I designed rooms with specific color schemes. It defined each scheme type, breaking down the cool and warm tones in each and showed full pages of examples for each category. Color being such an integral component of our everyday lives, this book is definitely a necessary addition to a reference library for any color applications such as interior/exterior structure, gardening, and wardrobe design.

Book Description
This book combines the basics of print production technology with design to give designers the knowledge they need to prepare designs for print. This book covers the fundamentals of printing including file set up, pre-press, the production process, and print production technology. For designers and print production artists who want a basic understanding of the printing process and the technology involved.
Customer Reviews:
Information good - quality of book poor.......2005-08-19
This was a text book for a college class. The content of the book is a good introduction to the subject. As a design student, I feel I benefited from reading it. But, the book itself is cheaply produced. 100 pages, only a few black and white images of poor quality. (Actually, they look like poor photocopies.) The cost of the book is more expensive than many of my other text books, which were printed on quality paper and included lots of full color, photographic images.
There have to be other books with similar content that are better value for the money.
Book Description
Computer technology has completely revolutionized the work of graphic designers, printers, and print-production professionals. This completely revised fourth edition of Production for Graphic Designers embraces all the new and emerging technologies in graphics and print production, comprehensibly explaining the pre-press and printing processes. It also covers new workflows and spells the dizzying array of acronyms encountered by today's designers. As well as covering print, it provides an authoritative guide to working in digital media, particularly the Internet.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent resource for Graphics students........2000-05-31
This is the SECOND year I will be ordering this title for my Graphic Art Production students. I hope Mr. Pipes plans to keep this publication up to date with another edition. What I like about this book is manifold: the author's clear, intelligent and succinct language tops my list. My students and I both found his prose not just informative, but interesting. The information covers all the basic concerns of a designer involved in production for print and the internet (it gives a well fleshed-out overview of all our areas of study at least). The section on Typography is also quite thorough and far less ponderous than other commonly used Type texts. All the chapters lay down a perfect bridge to a full lecture. Students come to class comprehending the basics, thus adding to their ability to build on that knowledge. The bios throughout the book are of great interest and focus on contemorary designers of note. The attractive layout supports the notion of Grahic Design, not too common these days. I have viewed many texts in the related areas of Graphic Design and find this book to be a perfect example of what a text should be. Bravo Mr Pipes, and thank-you! I will be watching to see what you publish next.
Only four stars as this was written in '97........1999-07-03
I have used this as a text for a graphic art production class and have found it to be excellent in terms of its explanations. The diagrams are clear, the text concise, the content easily comprehended by my students. I really like the 'Design Trailblazers'...it maintains the heart of good design throughout the often clinical aspects of production. A nice representative selection as well...the students could relate. I await the next edition.
Book Description
Everything about pre-press requirements you must know to take your design files to the printer, and not have to pay one dime in art, layout, setup, file preparation, or any other pre-press fees.
Customer Reviews:
only semi-informative.......2007-05-14
I was skeptical about by this book based on the cover, but as a graphic designer who is a little shaky on their pre-press skills I thought it would be helpful. Come to find out I should have gone with my gut. I did find a few paragraphs to be informative and helpful, but would not recommend this book to someone- especially not at it's suggested price. The book itself had alot of random information that did not seem to flow together and unless you knew some about pre-press you would have a hard time following and as someone with some pre-press knowledge you would not get your money's worth.

Betrayal of Friendship: The Private Diary of My Life with Lana.......2007-07-29
As a fan of Lana Turner's, I bought the book used. The book is well written and keeps you entertained. However, the inconsentecies, make a person realize that there is no documentation to support Mr. Root's story. For example, Lana Turner died on June 29th, 1995. Mr. Root's writes Lana died on June 27th 1995. Also, Mr. Root's writes Lucille Ball hasn't spoke to Ginger Rogers since RKO days. However, anyone can buy a dvd of Here's Lucy and see Ginger Rogers as a guest star on Lucille Ball's program. I think the real story is unfortunately at rest with Lana. In the book, Mr. Root seems to have portrayed Cheryl Crane as Christina Crawford in Mommie Dearest. The line of Cheryl beating her mother is unforgivable. All we have is his word, no proof in his book, except Lana's testimony who is deceased at this time. The rare photos make this book but I would never buy this book alone for it. If Mr. Root was a best friend of Lana Turner's, I think he betrayed this friendship by writing this book. In the book, the flimsy explanation of a son telling lies to Lana on him is ridiculous, which ended their friendship, in my opinion. Also, the story that Cheryl and Josh claimed that Lana near dying stated she was a lesbian is ridiculous too. All Cheryl ever does is tell how much Lana loved men. Shame on you for writing this book. Your story is more of a reflection of one of Lana's great movies "The Bad and the Beautiful." In my opinion, this is a great story but belongs in the fictional section. If you are a true Lana fan, don't buy this book.
Eric Root?.......2006-11-04
I sat behind this idiot Eric Root at a memorial tribute to the late June Allyson in L.A. on Nov. 2, 2006. At this event numerous stars like Jane Russell, Gloria DeHaven, Tippi Hedren, Debbie Reynolds, Melanie Griffith, Jane Withers, Larry Gelbart & his wife Pat Mitchell, Rich Little, Margaret O'Brien, & others had gathered to honor and remember & pay tribute to the late June Allyson. From the moment Eric Root sat down in front of me he could not resist calling attention on himself throughout the entire program which was in honor of a deceased woman. He would yell out "Absolutely!" at the drop of a hat in response to anything any of the stars on stage said & then would loudly talk to the people next to him (he was with "a Bloomingdale of Bloomingdale's dept. store," I heard him LOUDLY announce). It was incredibly distracting & rude. Frankly I've never seen an adult behave that way in my entire life. He even turned to other people and LOUDLY talked during June's film clips which were played. Also he LOUDLY announced to anyone within earshot that "they're making a movie of my life with Lana Turner!" Yeah, right. This guy's picture has gotta be next to the word sycophant in the dictionary. Absolutely pathetic. What a fool.
NOT the TRUTH! A "Fairy-Tale".......2004-05-26
My name is Taylor Pero, author of "ALWAYS, LANA" 1982, Bantam Books paperback. As Miss Turner's personal manager and confidante, Eric Root was introducted to Lana Turner my myself alone. I met him through a gay personals ad shortly after beginning my job for Miss Turner. I have kept all of the love letters and half-naked Poloroid photo he sent in his own hand-writing and would be happy to make them public in order to put an end to what Lana Turner often described as "his flapping lips". I can't describe the misinformation contained here and can only say that he used me to get to her and her to climb the ladder. He is a very talented hairdresser, but the kind who gives others of his profession a bad name.
It is as it was.......2004-02-22
I am currently producing a documentary on the life of Eric Root and I can tell you after interviewing dozens of Hollywood's biggest stars that those who Know Eric will vouch for his Honesty and integrity including Elizabeth Taylor. As far as Cheryl Crane wanting to sue Eric, she tried but couldn't why because her lawyers could not find any reason to. Apparently Cheryl was jealous because for a good portion her life Eric was closer to her mother than she was, but we won't go into that here. As for "Mr. Roots greedy little pen" Eric is very well off and donated most of the proceeds from this book to several charities. Eric's work with those in need is well known. What a previous reviewer detects as "bitter pages" was more frustration with Lana than anything to be bitter about. Lana wasn't the easiest person to get along with sometimes, but she definitely loved Eric. So far our research has concluded that the book is the truth. There are a few things in there that we'll never be able to prove one way or another but based upon our research and interviews it is as it was. Currently there are a number of producers that want to make a movie about the life of Eric Root of which Lana was only a part. Eric Root is one of the only living icon hairdressers left. Some of his credits include style director for I Magnum and Saks Fifth Avenue. Clients J. F. Kennedy, Rose Kennedy, Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor, and on and on. Eric has had a remarkable life and I think it will make a great movie!
Real-life Hollywood drama at its best!.......2000-07-07
I found Mr. Root's book fascinating. I could just hear Lana's high heels clicking along that marble hallway on her way out the door to meet her public! Mr. Root's style is perfect to tell the tale of Hollywood's greatest glamour queen. My only suggestion is that he keep up the good work!
