Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A standard fantasy, but non-standard, if you see what I mean. You have
a young boy setting out to become more than he his. However, this story
is not of the princess, knight and dragon school of high fantasy, and
has always seemed to more, more realistic, perhaps a little grittier,
or more grounded, which made it enjoyable enough to get through.
Start of a great epic fantasy series.......2007-07-10
I just read Dragonebone Chair for the second time (first time in almost 17 years!), and was really blown away about how carefully constructed Williams constructed the world of Osten Ard. When you look at the various nations, and the clear parallels they have with other nations in our world it gives the series more depth. I had missed this the first time I read through, and a second reading does wonders here. I do remember when I first read this book thinking that nothing happened in the first 200 pages-what a foolish thought that was, huh? ;) Seriously, Williams builds a tremendous tale and leaves you begging for more in the second book in this series.
Fits the modern high-fantasy mold, pulled off masterfully by Williams........2007-06-25
This is the first book of Williams' epic 'Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn.' As you can tell by reading some of the other reviews, it is full of cliches and the basic storyline could be interchanged with any number of other high fantasy stories. Simon, the young reluctant hero finds himself in the middle of an adventure quite unlike all the tales of heroes he so loved as a child. After his mysterious wizard-like mentor is killed by a king that has been corrupted by his evil sorcerous advisor, Simon is forced into the beginnings of a dangerous journey that will take him to places he had never imagined. Through fortuitous (or fateful) run-ins with unlikely companions, Simon survives impossible situations and begins to unravel mysteries that may one day save the kingdom. Basically, this story contains all of the staples of modern fantasies.
Still, this is a great book. Tad Williams has become a very popular author because of his ability to bring a story to life through powerful and beautiful descriptive writing. His ability to give new life and inspire new interest in this seemingly worn-out tale of a simple boy becoming a powerful warrior to fight the supposedly unstoppable evil power is truly impressive. After getting through the first 150 pages or so, you'll get drawn into this book and find yourself not caring that Tolkien, Feist, Brooks, and many others have already written this tale.
One unique aspect of this book is the heavy reliance on religion in setting out the world. Aedonsim is almost exactly like Christianity in our world, with a crucified saviour that was actually the Son of God and who was martyred for the sake of the common man, with nails driven through his hands and feet, and.. you get the idea. I like Williams' spunk in this case. Taking our very own religion and transferring it almost literally to a fantasy series is truly unique as far as I know.
While there could have been some more intensive editing done on this book (as is the case for every Williams book I have read), it is still very enjoyable. Not light reading, but definitely worth your time. I actually like this one better than Williams' Otherland series, and can't wait to read the rest.
Excellent high fantasy........2007-05-14
This is Tad Williams best work so far. The story is that of a young Kitchen boy, destined for greatness in a land torn asunder by evil magic. While this may sound "old hat" to readers of fantasy and high fantasy, Williams writes with a seemingly heartfelt grace. His style is both earthy and magical, richly complex yet seemlessly absorbing.
Cliche', thy name be Dragonbone Chair........2007-05-09
Yeah, we have Simon the Mary Sue character fighting a great and terrible evil and having prophetic dreams, there's an evil wizard beguiling the kingdom, and every other cliche' fantasy archtype you can think of.
If you want GOOD fantasy, go read Glen Cook's Black Company books or even better, George R.R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice series, which is excellent.
This book was boring, predictable, and I won't be finishing the series. If I wanted underdog vs. great and terrible evil, I'd go read Lord of the Rings, at least that was one of the first of its kind. This is not, and it's also not worth the time it took to read.

MYSTERY IS CALLING.......2007-08-01
BOB AND HIS WIFE ARE IN BIG TROUBLE, CAN THEY FACE IT? OH, WHAT ABOUT MARRYELLEN, CAN SHE REALLY SHOW HER LOVE FOR JON? FOR OLIVIA, HER MOTHER HAVE FALLING IN WITH A WIDOWER, BUT CAN OLIVIA ACCEPT HIM? WELL JUST GET THE BOOK AND FIND OUTLIKE I DID!!!!!!!!
44 Cranberry Point.......2007-05-13
I purchased all six in this series. I read all six and a 7th one comes out the fall of 2007. I enjoyed the pleasant story of a small town but after six books I felt the pattern of the writing got very repetative. Most of the following books spent time filling you in on the events that took place earlier and repeated who was related to who. After awhile, this detracted from the light plot to the point of becoming annoying. If you want a fast, lazy summer read at least the first three books are good just for fun.
Visit Old Friends in Fourth Cedar Cove Book.......2007-01-29
The characters I have grown to enjoy through the first three Cedar Cove books are all back and moving forward/backward in their lives. Opening the pages of this book was like going home to visit with these dear friends I've become very fond of. Debbie Macomber has not only given us another visit to this charming town and added new dimensions to the characters, but also provides us with a suspenseful resolution to the murder that occurred back in book one.
The focal point of this story is the home of Peggy and Bob Beldon who manage the Thyme and Tide B and B at 44 Cranberry Point. Nerves have been on edge with Peggy and Bob since a fellow Vietnam soldier, Max Russell, was found murdered at the inn. Bob, a recovering alcoholic, has the biggest challenge of his sober years when the need for a drink overtakes him. Will he manage to control himself or will he throw away all his hard work and good intentions?
Judge Olivia Lockhart of 16 Lighthouse Road is back from her honeymoon with newspaper editor Jack Griffin, but the adjustment period is harder than either imagined. Can a neat freak health nut live in harmony with a sloppy fast-foot addict?
Maryellen and Jon Bowman finally marry and seem happy with daughter Katie. But will the arrival of Jon's parents disrupt their happy home? Can the disowned son ever forgive his parents' betrayal? Jon is stubborn and it will take a major tragedy to get him to even consider reconciliation.
Grace Sherman has made a decision and Cliff Harding is the one she wants. Alas, Grace's internet romance with Will Jefferson may have ended any hopes for a life with Cliff. When Will visits Cedar Cove, what will Grace do?
Romance is in the air for septuagenarians Charlotte Jefferson and Ben Rhodes, but will a background search uncover facts about Ben that would stand in the way of this romance?
Ian Randall is home on leave but tensions are mounting with wife Cecilia. Will they put their grief over losing daughter Allison in perspective and be ready to try to have another child?
Private investigator Roy McAfee has been getting strange and rather threatening notes. A package left on his doorsteps is the ultimate cliffhanger ending and it should be no surprise to followers of this series that the spotlight will now shift to the McAfee home at 50 Harbor Street for the next installment in the series.
In addition to the main characters, minor characters such as Rachel the nail tech, widower Bruce Peyton, Stanley Lockhart and others make appearances and propel the storyline, thanks in large part to a hilarious Dog and Bachelor auction which makes matches and mismatches aplenty.
Debbie Macomber has given us the perfect soap opera in book form and I eagerly look forward to each new installment. I would advise readers to begin at the beginning to eliminate any confusion in this multi-populated series.
Another Good Installment.......2006-11-14
The mystery of the B&B is solved althought the killer became obvious it was still fun to read. Charlotte got a love interest, Maryellen moved forward with her life with Jon and their daughter. Cecelia decided it was time for another baby but Ian didn't quite agree. Grace had her hands full with her love interests while Olivia adjusted to life with her new husband. Read and enjoy.
small town life.......2006-11-10
Macomber's work is so believable. Her characters are so real, with interesting problems. 44 Cranberry Point makes me wish I lived there. I always enjoy her work.

Book Description
What do you do as a therapist, teacher, doctor or manager when your client, student, patient or colleague says "It's like I'm hitting my head against a brick wall," "I've got a knot in my stomach" or "I'm looking for the right path to take"?
Metaphors in Mind describes how to give individuals an opportunity to discover how their symbolic perceptions are organised, what needs to happen for these to change, and how they can develop as a result. Based on David Grove's pioneering therapeutic approach and use of Clean Language, Symbolic Modelling is an emergent, systemic and iterative way of facilitating the psychotherapeutic process.
This comprehensive book covers the theory of metaphor, self-organising systems, symbolic modelling, the practice of Clean Language, the five-stage therapeutic process, and includes three client transcripts. A companion video/DVD, A Strange and Strong Sensation: Symboic Modeling, Change with Metaphor, is also available
Customer Reviews:
An amazing book!.......2007-03-30
I consider myself pretty "cutting-edge" in terms of personal-growth technologies, and this was definitely something new! I highly recommend this to therapists, coaches or really anyone who wants to effectively navigate and help others (or yourself) heal and develop their minds.
I fear that some may be turned off by the long sub-title, but really this is about how to understand and use metaphors (and metaphorical language) in a powerfully healing way. I have a lot of background in NLP and therapy and I don't know if others will find it as accessible without this. Once you learn "clean language" (a form of asking questions and eliciting information that does not "contaminate" the answers with your own assumptions, metaphors, etc.) you will wonder how you (or any therapist) gets by without it!
I just wish these people lived closer, so I could more easily study with them (and experience being on the receiving end - other than in self-guided sessions!).
Going deeper .......2006-11-03
Very neat read...especially for all those interested in the process of change / reality perception...and all those studying NLP.
This book clarifies how we code our reality, if you will. A good companion to NLP books on Modeling.
A basic understanding of NLP is suggested prior to reading Metaphors in Mind, yet it keeps a pretty simple tone and clarifying language to go deep into the subject. When I read this, I new I had outgrown my therapist.
All those studying or working as therapists / counselors can also draw a lot of useful info from this book.
All The Difference.......2003-09-14
The nature of the book turns me toward testimony rather than review, because the book is where a change began for me. I thought Metaphors in Mind had something to do with literary analysis, which is what I was looking for. I was thus a little disappointed when I first opened the book, but then I couldn't put it down (see . . . it's impossible to live outside metaphors). So compelling was its proposal, metaphor is reality, that for the first time in my more than fifty years, I sought a therapist who ascribed to its principles. By happy coincidence I was able to meet with James and Penny--two of the gentlest human beings I think I have ever met. What has changed is my relationship and response to the images I live with and have lived through, once I spoke what they were, and where they resided in me, and what it felt like living with them, and what needed to happen to dispell--those ghosts, bugaboos and, ah yes those very symbolic ties that bind and double bind ones consciousness. For an English teacher to obtain reality through the life that exists in words is an awesome and radical experience. Without the book though there wouldn't have been a beginning . . . or, so as not to try logic, there wouldn't have been such a beginning. Metaphors in Mind is clear, precise and orderly, a succinct presentation of theory and pratice, even for the lay reader. It's an extraordinary introduction, and perhaps a great beginning. Before me now in my classroom are the basic clean language iterations and questions to consider, perhaps, the life of the symbols within Gatsby or Hamlet or Elizabeth Bennett. My thanks to James Lawley and Penny Tompkins.
The Importance of Metaphors.......2002-03-01
The previous reviewers spoke of the value of this book for therapists and mental health professionals. However, Metaphors in Mind will also provide the interested layman with a fascinating view into the way people create their "realities." The explanations are clear and any special vocabulary is well defined. The annotated transcripts provide powerful examples of the way metaphors shape people's perceptions. I would highly recommend Metaphors in Mind to anyone interested in the intriguing landscape of the human mind.
Groundbreaking development in human changework.......2002-02-04
This is a definitive book about the most important development in human psychology since Freud. Lawley and Tompkins have written an accessible, insightful account of a new way of working with verbal and nonverbal language that will not only appeal to the ordinary reader but to therapists, psychologists, educators, trainers, doctors, managers and consultants - indeed anyone interested in facilitating human change. Read this book and I guarantee you will never use language the same way again.

Customer Reviews:
Great ideas!.......2002-09-24
Are you one of those people who requires paint-by-number picture kits, and dotes on full step-by-step Martha-style craft instructions? If so, don't bother with this book. If, however, you are capable of finding information on basic techniques once you realize that you want to try them, the many different great ideas in this book are just the thing! I would never have thought to tie-BLEACH a garment before dyeing it, for wonderful lightening-bolt effects, for example. All I need is good pictures of good project ideas, with a little info on what types of techniques and materials to use; I don't need someone to hold my hand and murmur reassurances as I go along. I was amazed to see another review of this book dismissing it for doing what it does so well!
A picture book.......2000-04-16
This book is great for looking at great designs but hardly one to use to create a t-shirt. There is no in depth directions to make any of these t-shirts. I was interested in making new designs for my t-shirts (tie dye) and this book is totally useless. You really have to guess at what they are doing since there are not many directions to follow. For example: They tell you to use c-clamps to secure it between wood- well how is it positioned, what size wood ? Everything is very vague in the directions. They show only one picture of folding a t-shirt and that doesn't show you anything of how to position it. I have been tie dying for 10 years and hoped for more in depth directions to create new designs. I guess it is back to the drawing board for me. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this book. I can go to many web sites to look at great designs if I just wanted a collection of pictures. Very disapointed in this one......

A great reference books for all graphic designers and art directors.
The title echoes the famous challenge of the great magazine designer Alexey Brodovitch of Harper's Bazaar to his design team: "Astonish me!". Surprise Me delivers on each and every page on its promise.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of examples; little context.......2007-01-03
Surprise me: Editorial Design is nothing but examples arranged in categories. There is something here for the serious designer to gleen from exposure but any help from the author as to criteria for inclusion or particularly striking examples is missing. Since the aurthor is German, many of the examples are European and most reprersent the kind of swiss-griddy laid-back style that finds little currency among contemporary (read:young) audiences. Still, there are things here that can inspire a magazine designer, but there was little to "surprise me."

Book Description
Noisy, jolly, fun, acerbic—the late Jennifer Paterson had a legion of friends and admirers. From her job as a cook for the Spectator, where she was famously sacked for throwing the dishes out the window, to her phenomenal success as half of the "Two Fat Ladies" duo, Jennifer roared through life—riotous and rude in equal parts—endearing herself to all who knew her. Here, friends, colleagues, and fellow cooks, including A.N. Wilson, Clarissa Dickson Wright, and Peter Ackroyd, write about Jennifer as they knew her: an energetic promoter of no-nonsense cooking, a hilarious social companion, a hugely successful television personality, and a kind friend.
Customer Reviews:
Great fun!.......2002-11-14
Ok, it's not War and Peace, but for all us who miss Jennifer Paterson or who never knew the range of her unconventionality from the TV show, this is a quick and delightful ride driven by those who knew and loved her. Loving testaments from those who fired her for throwing all the dishes out the window, those she insulted, those she cooked for, are published alongside photos from her birth to old age, and of her helmet being carried behind her coffin at her funeral . Let your hair down, pour a glass, and dig this one!
Disappointed!!.......2001-02-27
I was very disappointed in this book. It seems to have been rushed to press. It just mulls over the same things, what Jennifer's jobs were and her heavy drinking. There must have been more to this interesting lady. Wish it had been better. Maybe someone will write a better book about this woman.
