In To Your Scattered Bodies Go, Philip José Farmer introduces readers to the awesome Riverworld, a planet that had been carved into one large river on whose shores all of humanity throughout the ages has seemingly been resurrected. In The Fabulous Riverboat, Farmer tells the tale of one person whose is uniquely suited to find the river's headwaters, riverboat captain and famous Earthly author Sam Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain). Clemens has been visited by "X," a mysterious being who claims to be a rebel among the group that created Riverworld. X tells Clemens where he can find a large deposit of iron and other materials that Clemens can use to build the greatest riverboat ever seen. Since there is virtually no metal on the planet, it will also give Clemens an unbeatable edge when it comes to battling the various warlike societies that dominate the Riverworld.

But Clemens is not alone in his quest for the iron, which arrives on the planet in the form of a giant meteorite. In fact, Clemens is besieged on all sides by forces determined to seize the precious ore, leading him to make a deadly pact with one of history's most notorious villains, John Lackland. Lackland's crimes during his reign as king of England were so hideous that no other English monarch will ever carry his name, and he's up to equally nefarious tricks on Riverworld. However, Clemens has a guardian angel in the form of Joe Miller, a giant subhuman with a big nose, a serious lisp, and a cutting wit. Miller has also been to the very headwaters of the river, where he saw a mysterious tower in the middle of the North Sea and where the creators of Riverworld are thought to reside. He will be an invaluable ally in completing the riverboat and sailing to the headwaters, but even an 800-pound giant may not be enough to help Clemens fulfill X's mission. --Craig E. Engler

Book Description

Resurrected on the lush, mysterious banks of Riverworld, along with the rest of humanity, Samuel Langhorne Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain) has a dream: to build a riverboat that will rival the most magnificent paddle-wheelers ever navigated on the mighty Mississippi. Then, to steer it up the endless waterway that dominates his new home planet--and at last discover its hidden source.

But before he can carry out his plan, he first must undertake a dangerous voyage to unearth a fallen meteor. This mission would require striking an uneasy alliance with the bloodthirsty Viking Erik Bloodaxe, treacherous King John of England, legendary French swordsman Cyrano de Bergerac, Greek adventurer Odysseus, and the infamous Nazi Hermann Göring. All for the purpose of storming the ominous stone tower at the mouth of the river, where the all-powerful overseers of Riverworld--and their secrets--lie in wait . . .

1 out of 5 stars suck fest.......2007-05-19

after the first book I was suspecting a lot more. It got to the point where I was just skipping pages to finish. The 3rd book was a little better but not much.

4 out of 5 stars Mark Twain in Space.......2006-01-19

This second installation in the Riverworld series stars the real-life historical figure of Samuel Langhorn Clemens, aka Mark Twain. He, too, has been resurrected on this strange planet. With the aid of a "Mysterious Stranger", who claims to be a renegade member of the species who built the planet and resurrected the humans, he struggles to build an enormous paddle-wheeler and search out the tower said to be found at the river's source. Unfortunately he is tied to the most notorious traitor in English history, John Lackland. As I said about the first book in the series, this book is entertaining but ultimately dissatisfying because of little character development and no solution to the mystery of the planet.

4 out of 5 stars Series gaining strength as it continues.......2004-09-08

This is Farmer's second offering in his outstanding Riverworld series, five books that must be read together in sequence for the whole story. He continues to develop this fabulous world of a millions mile long river, snaking around and around a planet, hemmed in on each side by unscaleable mountains which force all to live in the river valley. Into this artificially formed world, all humanity who ever lived and died has been resurrected, with no clue as to the how or why, or by whom. The books in the series tell the stories of those who are driven to find answers to those mysteries.
In 'The Fabulous Riverboat', Farmer leaves for a while the quest of his protagonist from the first book, Sir Richard Burton, and focuses on another fascinating 19th century personality - Samuel Clemens, AKA Mark Twain. Clemens is driven by a dream of finding iron on this mineral-poor planet from which he can build a riverboat such as he piloted on Earth, to take him to the headwaters of the river where emerging clues seem to indicate answers can be found to this confounding after-life. The Clemens we meet here is bitter, angry, and filled with guilt, and his ultimate motivation is to find those responsible for the mass resurrection of humanity, and to strike whatever blow he can against them in retaliation for bringing him back from the peace of the grave. With the help of a powerful "Mysterious Stranger", who may be a renegade member of the race responsible for this resurrection and Riverworld, Clemens is able to find the minerals he needs, and to form a colony dedicated to the project of building his fabulous riverboat.
Complications abound, however. The first and greatest is a partnership of necessity that Clemens must form with the deceitful and despicable King John Lackland, the most notorious of all the old kings of England. Then there is the need to concentrate on developing the military might to hold and defend this unique area of the river that contains the minerals necessary to fulfilling his dream. And finally, there is Sam's personal, guilt-ridden agony over making the hard, amoral choices that have to be made if he is going to succeed in his quest.
The strength of these books lie in the opportunities that the premise provides for having historical persons from widely different periods interact with each other. In 'The Fabulous Riverboat', we meet Lothar von Richthofen, brother and flying comrade of the Red Baron, Erik Bloodaxe, 10th century Viking leader, Odysseus, Cyrano de Bergerac, Hitler's toady Herman Goring, mountain man "Liver Eating" Johnson and more. Together with some well-drawn original characters, these make for a fascinating story.
This book does not suffer as much from stilted writing as did the first book of the series, but I still would describe the writing style as merely competent. The characters and story are the strength of the book, and more than sufficient to provide both the thrills and intellectual stimulation to make reading it worthwhile.
After taking you on a thrill-ride of battles, assassinations, double crosses, and assorted intrigue, 'The Fabulous Riverboat' will leave you with a cliff-hanging ending that should send you scrambling to read the next book in the series (The Dark Design).

4 out of 5 stars fairly enjoyable pulp.......2004-06-16

not much more to say. It's pulp, but good enjoyable stuff.

Books 1 and 2 are vastly superior because, not despite this. Their origins in the serial magazine world show and are delightful.

Books 3,4,5 suffer because PJF tends to believe he is a far far better writer than he is, and overwrite if not severely edited

3 out of 5 stars To journey up the great River.......2004-04-20

In this, the second of The Riverworld series, Samuel Clemens, joined by Viking, Erik Bloodaxe undertake to find a source of iron great enough to build a Riverboat by which to navigate to the headwaters of the Riverworld and there to asertain the purpose for which they were all resurected.

The Stranger who has helped various individuals along with information in the first book continues to help, and lends his assistance in delivering an enormous supply of iron in reach of Clemens's team. Undertaking thier great project, the newfounded city faces trials from within and without. Neighboring city-states want to take over the source of iron for themselves, and Samuel Clemens must think quick to avoid trechery, even comiting trechery of his own to achive his goals.

Not as great as the first book, and it draggs a bit, but still enjoyable.

Anyone who thinks that men are by nature more sexual than women or that African-American women are especially inhibited hasn't read Zane. Here, she presents an erotic read in three parts: Wild, Wilder, and Off Da Damn Hook. With a unique ability to tell it like it is -- and also to tell it like it could be in your wildest dreams -- Zane crafts stories about everyone from the sensual housewife who wants her husband to experiment more to a secret underground sorority of women that organizes some rather unconventional social events. By turns tender and outrageous, The Sex Chronicles is a pleasure from beginning to end.

Beware!! You must come with a open mind. This book will light more than the fire burning inside you.

                    1 out of 5 stars Garbage!.......2007-09-23

I bought this on the strength of reviews here. What a mistake! I now believe those reviews were put up here by the publisher.

My wife took a look at it first and put it down right away. So I picked it up and I could see why she had dropped it. Very simply - it sucks! I have read a good deal of porn in my time and this is some of the worst I have ever read. It is concrete, clunky, prosaic, with zero style and zero sense of time and pace. In a word it is *mechanical*. There is not a whiff of the erotic anywhere. Find something else - trust me. You could buy pay close to nothing on a secondhand bookstall and do *way* better than this - in fact, if you didn't, you could consider yourself extremely unlucky!

Check out the number that are available secondhand and the prices they go for - this is not a book people keep - those numbers never lie, unlike some reviewers.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fantasy Island.......2007-09-03

Many different fantasies. She really has been around, or has one of the best imaginations I have ever heard of.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great........2007-08-29

If what one compares this book to is typical pornography, it's pretty well written. The fantasies are interesting enough, and if just about all of the protagonists are supposedly well-off, well-educated black women but still talk like "street sistas" in their internal monologues, well, I guess that means that that's what the author is like, and they're all aspects of her. But what keeps this from being REALLY GOOD erotica is that there's too much description of action, and not enough description of sensation. We get a whole lot of "he did this" and "I did that", and (to be fair) a certain amount of "that really got me hot" or "that really got my juices flowing" (which is why this rates as well as it does, rather than lower) but not enough real description of what the characters were feeling (and I'm talking sensations; I'm not trying to claim we should be getting more emotional responses. This is, after all, erotica/porn, not a romance.) This is a common failing of erotica/porn, and in my mind is one of the defining differences between them. This book talks about a lot of sex, but it isn't really very erotic. So if what you're looking for is essentially well-written porn, this is what you're looking for. If what you want is erotica, it falls a bit short.

5 out of 5 stars I Will Be Back For More.......2007-08-19

I have never read any of Zane's work before, but even an almost virgin like me has got to start somewhere. It was certainly a sexual education for me and being a newcomer to erotic fiction it will be my yard stick. I have tried a couple of erotic novels recently, but I think I prefer the short story genre as it gets to the action quicker and there tends to be more of it. Excellent stuff I will seek out more of Zane. For other seekers of ecplicit unrestrained erotica I highly recomend that you check out Suzie Van Aartman's 100 Percent Erotica, its not itelectually challenging, but boy is it hugely juicy and raunchy.

By the time I had finished "Sharamitaro", I was so interested in the world of Milhavior that I ordered "The Road to Elekar" as soon as I was done. I probably should have ordered it before, so I wouldn't have had to wait, but the second book turned out to be a better read than the first! Brendys of Shalkan really goes through the wringer, and if you finish this book without getting emotional, you're made of stone. I'm now waiting impatiently for "A Howl on the Wind".

I'm going to pass the book around my circle of friends and urge my long distance friends to get copies. Congratulations to the author. You crafted an extremely potent story.

3 out of 5 stars skimps on useful stuff, quotes a lot of speculation.......2006-04-04

here's the only good I got from it:

*schedule your evening meal at least 3 hours before bedtime (same for exercise and caffeinated tea)
*eat a large breakfast, moderate lunch, and lighter dinner, or smaller frequent meals
*nap between 2 and 4 in the afternoon rather than earlier or later
*in warmer weather, open a window a crack to relieve stuffy air
                    *wear socks to bed
*try sleeping with a pillow between your knees
*try Reiki, acupuncture, acupressure, massage, yoga, and/or meditation
*try tryptophan or calcium-rich foods about an hour before bedtime: milk, yogurt, turkey, figs, dates, peanut butter, rice, tuna
*try carbohydrates 45 minutes before bedtime: toast, almonds and fruit, cereal, pasta
*sedative teas in moderate amounts about 30 minutes before bedtime: chamomile, catnip, or passionflower
*avoid msg, nicotine, and caffeine (300 milligrams disrupts REM)

4 out of 5 stars Many Sound Ideas, But We Also Need a Word of Caution.......2006-03-12

As someone who has spent years helping people get control of their sleep/wake cycles, I'm always on the lookout for anything new that may help before we have to use prescription medications. There are a great many good ideas in this book, but also a couple of things about which we need to be careful.

I love it that Barbara starts with "Ten things you can do today to sleep soundly tonight", and that item six concerns temperature. Yet there is little further mention of the importance of temperature control, even though it is one of the key controllers of the sleep/wake cycle.

Though 90% of the suggestions are very sound, those for using herbal remedies worry me. I am very keen on the use of some herbal remedies, but with some caveats. Barbara is very good about mentioning the importance of discussing the use of St. John's Wort with a health care provider: there are scores of potential interactions of the herb with other herbs and prescription medicines. Sadly she doesn't go into the same detail with some of the other herbs that she recommends. Even when the book came out five years ago, there were already some worries about Kava-kava and Valerian. That shows the importance of supplementing any books - including my own! - with up-to-date information from critical review articles. Though there are thousands of things written on the Internet and in popular articles, there are not that many good, readily available and up-to-date critical review articles, so we are going to help fill the gap through richardgpettymd.com and psychiatricresourceforum.blogs.com.

Because I really like most of Barbara's suggestions, I'm going to give the book four stars, and hope that she has the time to produce a second edition to talk a bit about the pros and cons of herbal remedies, and the new data about using melatonin.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide to improve your sleep.......2002-04-12

Heller's book contains helpful tips for anyone who has trouble sleeping. I've suffered from insomnia for years and found her book extremely helpful. The book packs a lot of information into a quick, easy read. I especially liked the lists such as the ones on how to lessen the effects of jet lag or the 7 essential habits of highly successful sleepers.

Heller's book was a vital resource for an article I wrote about sleep titled "Wooing the Sandman."

5 out of 5 stars Two hundred easy, effective, highly recommended techniques.......2001-10-14

Whether sleep problems are intermittent or chronic, author Heller provides over two hundred easy, effective, and highly recommended techniques ranging from simple exercises and easy recipes for sleep-inducing foods to useful herbal baths and productive room sprays in How To Sleep Soundly Tonight. Some approaches, such as visualization and bedtime sleep rituals, may be familiar to any who have struggled with this problem; other suggestions, such as the recipes for herbal baths, are unique in How To Sleep Soundly Tonight. If you suffer from insomnia or other sleep related difficulties, read Barbara Heller's How To Sleep Soundly Tonight.

5 out of 5 stars Help for the Sleepless.......2001-07-11

How to Sleep Soundly Tonight is a delightful little book. Written simply enough for anyone to understand, yet it is packed full of information for those who suffer from insomnia or other sleep problems.

The book starts out with a comprehensive list of ten things you can do today to sleep soundly tonight. These are not your everyday tips, but just a bit off the beaten track. Yet I can see the benefit of all of them.

Chapter one deals with how and why we should sleep. Do you know how much sleep you need? This chapter will help you decide what's right for you. Barbara also explains the difference between NREM and REM sleep. This chapter also deals with circadian rhythm, your biological clock and chronotherapy.

Are you a morning lark or a night owl? "Research suggests that only about 20 percent is truly at either extreme," Barbara explains in a sidebar, "but it is helpful to be aware of your own tendencies."

Do you dream? Barbara explains that most of us dream as much as two hours a night. More important, why do we dream? You'll find the answer in Sleep Soundly Tonight.

Sleep patterns tend to change as people age. In chapter two of her book, Barbara discusses sleep from how to deal with fussy babies to the sleep debt entailed by the life of a teenager. Pregnancy alters a woman's sleep patterns, as does growing old. Barbara explodes the myth that senior citizens don't need as much sleep as they did when they were young. "It is a myth that the elderly don't need as much sleep," Barbara says, "but it is true that they don't seem to get as much." Why? You'll find the answer in the book.

In chapter three Barbara takes a look at sleep disorders and how to detect them. She discusses common sleep disorders - insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and other disorders. Believe it or not, a lot of these sleep problems we seem to bring on with our erratic lifestyles, filling our time with work and play and not leaving enough hours for sleep. "This deliberate sleep deprivation," Barbara says, "may be a precursor to involuntary insomnia and other health problems."

Chapters four and five discuss our habits and our environment. There are ways to improve both these factors of our lives and thus improve our sleep. Chapter six is filled with excellent self-help tips, including bedtime rituals and napping. The last two and a half pages of this chapter contain hints from other people on how they cope with sleeplessness.

Ever tried meditation, creative visualization, yoga? In chapter seven, Barbara talks about all of these as a means of relaxing so you can fall asleep. She also discusses relaxation techniques like massage, reflexology, reiki and several more. How about music? "Music therapy has been shown to benefit patients in hospitals and nursing homes," Barbara says in chapter seven.

And then there's herbs - in your tea, in your pillow, in your bath or in the air. Barbara tells you in chapter eight how to brew chamomile tea, how to make herbal bath salts and how to make a herbal pillow. In this chapter she also discusses homeopathy and herbal supplements. An excellent end piece to this chapter tells us how to use herbs safely.

The final chapter tells us what to do if all these things we've tried still don't help. "Chronic medical problems often don't respond to self-help remedies," the author warns. "(Then) seek conventional medical assessment and treatment."

Creole Gumbo (makes 12 quarts = 48 servings, can be made in smaller batches)

Recipe below evolved and adapted for the beach from "Creole Gumbo and all that Jazz" by Howard Mitcham, who nails it far better than anyone in print. This book is highly recommended.

6 quarts chicken stock or water 6+ washed tomatoes 2+ lbs washed medium shrimp 12+ washed live crabs (essential, buy 18 before boarding ferry)

Bring stock to boil. All in same stock, boil tomatoes 1 minute, skin and seed. Boil shrimp 4 minutes, shell and fridge the meat. Boil live crabs 20 minutes. Eat some crab meat for lunch, return all crab parts, well crushed with shrimp shells, to same stock. Boil vigorously 15 minutes, no longer. Strain stock well e.g. through paper towels and colander.

stick butter flour bunch scallions 3+ onions 1+ heads of garlic 3+ red or green peppers 4+ sticks celery

Melt butter in heavy nonstick. Add flour bit by bit till thick slurry. Stir with spatula over med heat till deep tan or as dark as you dare, without burning. Add chopped veggies (chop garlic and onions at last minute) and saute till soft. Move to heavy gumbo pot if this wasn't it.

3 lbs okra, fresh or frozen 2+ lbs good ham 3 bay leaves bunch fresh thyme bunch parsley 2-3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1-3 tbsp tabasco sauce 1+ tbsp freshly ground black pepper 1/2 lb double smoked bacon 2+ lbs fresh Andouille sausage or similar hot sausage, or kielbasa

Add okra sliced into rounds, diced tomatoes, diced ham, thyme tied into bunch, minced parsley, bay, any meat you crave and have (chicken? beef browned in bacon fat?). Add enough stock to cover solids and keep sloppy. Add some Worcestershire, tabasco, pepper. Slice and cook bacon, crumble and add. Braise sausage in inch of water till ready to eat, poking with fork to release fat. Slice and save.

Simmer gumbo 2-4 hours, low enough and stirred often enough to never stick at bottom. Tasting over next few hours, remembering flavors will "cure" and salt gets added at end, gradually add more W,t,p to taste. Add sausage 30 minutes before serving, shrimp 10 minutes before serving, add any seafood you crave and have (oysters? lobster? crawfish tails?). Salt generously to taste, serve with ample cooked rice.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best Authentic Cajun Gumbo Recipes.......2002-04-30

The absolute best book in its category! As a real Cajun (born and raised in South Louisiana), I can't tell you how many times I've gone into a restaurant in the East, West, or Midwest and ordered a "Cajun" gumbo dish and had to gasp in amazement at how "wrong" they got it, and how little it tasted like authentic Cajun gumbo. So, thank God for Floyd and Bea Weber! I know how to cook authentic Cajun gumbo and can vouch for this excellent Cajun Gumbo recipe book. This book contains a treasure trove of the absolute best authentic recipes from genuine local South Louisiana people (many of whom have now passed away), that were passed down over generations of Cajuns. This is REAL DEAL. So, if you REALLY want to cook the delicious Cajun gumbo that my mom and grandma used to make, this is THE book for you. Knowing what I know, I can definitely say that this book would be a steal at $50, but fortunately for us, the price is a lot lower (which means I can order multiple copies and pass them out to friends)!

Well, I was born in Taiwan and raised in Southeast Texas. So I was always very mindful of my surroundings. What I love most about my environment is the people first and food second. And that explains, sort of, my being a sushi chef in California today. One day years ago, after having quite a stomach full of sweet, delicious crawfish, etc. at The Cajun Cookery, next to IH-10 in Orange, TX, I discovered this lovely little Cajun cookbook called The Louisiana Gumbo Cookbook by Bea and Floyd Weber (Acadian House.) Very resourceful, and full of easy to understand, real... down home Cajun recipes. The restaurant was asking for a hefty price for the book, so no buy, but managed to write down the infos on the book on the menu and kept it until today. Finally decided to give it a search today, and BOY!.... was I surprised to see it onscreen @ Amazon.com Wonderful!

A must-buy for all Cajun history, food fans all over the world!

1 out of 5 stars Adds Little To The Knowledge of Fabric Creation and Usage.......2006-04-25

I have been in the textile industry going on 30 years now, and I bought this book in hopes of, perhaps, learning about the creation of certain fabrics and their application within several industries. After reading through a mini-biography of the owner of the fabrics (who evidently was "somebody" in the industry but who I never heard of), I saw photos of different types of fabric with no analysis or application information attached. I have to agree with the earlier reviewer who states that it appears that this is nothing more than a collection of fabrics that perhaps were gathered up and photographed to create a publishable book. It's certainly not large enough to be considered a pretty "table" book, and it doesn't contain much in the way of technical information. Given the opportunity to go back in time, I would pass on this one in favor of the more popular and well-known publishers on textiles.

I ordered this book from Amazon thinking it would give me some history and insight into the creation and development of the fabrics. It's nothing more than photographs of some material he probably had laying around for fifty years.

5 out of 5 stars The premier book on the last of the true big-outfit cowhands.......1999-08-04

CJ Hadley captures the essence of the great basin buckaroo through the artisans that still craft his gear. If you want to catch a glimmer of what it is really like to be a buckaroo, or wish to understand this old lifestyle in a modern era, find a copy of this book. It is rich in tradition and fills in enormous gaps in the knowledge of the western cowhand's way of life. Get this book. Understand these folks.

The Swedish palette of soft pastels conveys an aesthetic simplicity like no other. Even though I do not live in a stately mansion or a castle (beautifully photographed throughout the book) I became inspired to add the same colors and textures to my own decor. Stenciled borders, tromp l' oleil, marbling, and delicately painted wall canvases add harmony and warmth to your living space.

5 out of 5 stars Swedish interiors through the centuries.......2006-02-13

The cover and the look-inside-glimpse do not do this book justice att all. It's not all that rural and folksy, but has wide range of interiors from palaces, mansions, farms and cottages. The in-put from Italy (and later France) was huge in the days when Sweden was a major European power in the 17th century. The book moves on into the Gustavian era of simple elegance and continues to regency and the summer-houses that became popular in the 19th century. A very well illustrated book with excellent photos.

5 out of 5 stars The Swedish Room.......2003-06-06

Beautiful book, well researched and written with carefully selected and beautiful photos. A must have for anyone interested in Gustavian interiors and the homes that contain them. The interiors selected for this book are the relatively simpler ones with soft color schemes and a cleaner, pared-down look - ones more acceptable to contemporary tastes - rather than the gilded neoclassical palaces of the same period. If you are interested in the more palatial interiors of the same period I recommend: Neoclassicism in the North, Swedish Furniture and Interiors 1770-1850 . I noticed in browsing through this book, that a number of the interiors selected for inclusion in The Swedish Room are actually the simplest rooms in otherwise grand palaces.
A very pleasing selection of interior views overall and much better than Barbara Stoeltie's similar book, The Country Houses of Sweden.

                      5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive & useful.......2003-03-20

I have found this book a constant inspiration when considering the Swedish style in general and Gustavian in particular.

The photos and colours are excellent. The text begins by being historically interesting and illuminating but becomes unfocussed and then banal. The translation is awkward in parts. Still the information is superior to the commonly gushy interior design style.

Although there is a section on contemporary versions of the classic Swedish styles, it remains primarily an homage to the original rather than an illustration of an inventive combination.

                      Nonetheless, an excellent reference book.

This is a lovely book with beautiful color pictures from what I think is authentic interiors. The author walks us through the essence of swedish style via colors, fabrics, accessories and furniture. I miss not having typical interiors and suggestions of how to decorate individual rooms such as hallways and kitchens etc. The main focus is on livingrooms and bedrooms. I still think it's a good purchase and this book gives me a lot of inspiration.

3 out of 5 stars Good basic intro but prissy.......2003-04-03

This is a good and basic introduction to the elements of Swedish style in interior design.

There is a simple historical summary that captures the background to Swedish design without making erudite comments on the style itself, other than to list the fundamental principles.

The asthetic choices are very tuille and English in flavour; something that a middle-class London matron may aspire to. The lack of real recourse to original Swedish design and then imaginative and tasteful modern alternatives makes this book disappointing.

"The Swedish Room" is far more inspiring and authentic.

This is a highly visual, compact-format sourcebook, packed with top international packaging designers' contemporary work, accompanied by essays on the surrounding issues.

What Is Packaging Design? lays the foundations and professional guidelines for best practice when designing contemporary packaging. It opens with several short essays which define good packaging design and the issues faced by designers in this field. Design basics such as format, layout and typography are explored within the context of packaging design, taking into account genre-specific elements such as product information, branding, marketing and legislation.

                      4 out of 5 stars A lovely book.......2007-01-18

This is a relatively thick, small-sized book that's a joy to hold in your hands. It's compact, the bright hard-cover is silky and the inner layout is clear and glossy. The book is so easy to handle that I'd take it with me everywhere if I had a good reason to do so! It's a joy to hold, to read and to look at.

The book is divided into small chapters, covering most topics related to the universe of packaging design: market considerations, legislation, structural design and packaging types, surface graphics, typography and more. But each chapter is but a mere synopsis; this is not a book that expands much on these key topics, and it ends up not being very useful if you're trying to learn the specifics of each topic. The book also doesn't cover specific packaging materials at all, like other packaging books do. This is a great introduction to packaging design, but that's all. It's also a wonderful source of eye-candy, as each chapter features full page reproductions of original and innovative packages. Each image is commented and generally mentions the designer of each package, but there is no note on the materials, which leaves you wondering in a lot of cases. The last portion of the book is devoted to (very) brief case studies, which, once again, are mostly for show. But that said, it's a great show! Most of the featured packaging designs are truly original and beautiful.

"What is packaging design?" focuses mostly on theory and not on practical aspects, and that's simultaneously its strength and its downfall. In the end, you will know what packaging design is, but you won't know much about the process behind packaging design. If you're looking for the latter, try a different book.

Well organized and concise with lots of photos of good packaging design. A great book to turn to for inspiration.

The marvelous second chapter of Farewell sets the mood for everything to come in the noted playwright's memoir of his childhood in tiny Wharton, Texas. As a young Horton Foote questions his parents about their "elopement"--they had to go five blocks across town to be wed by a Baptist minister because his mother's Methodist parents didn't approve of the match--the intricate web of kinship, friendship, and local geography that shapes small-town life is hilariously yet touchingly revealed in each of their asides and elaborations. Foote's birth in 1916 healed the family rift, and he grew up in a cozy environment where everyone knew everyone else and more or less accepted their eccentricities. He doesn't gloss over the harsh realities of racial prejudice and segregation, but his tone is nonetheless elegiac, glowing with the magic of the characters' storytelling. Southerners have always been famous for their ability to spin yarns, and Foote captures that in extended passages of conversation. Direct quotes are generally cause for suspicion in a memoir, but when the dialogue has the same vigor and subtlety found in the author's screenplays and plays (A Trip to Bountiful and The Young Man from Atlanta among them), you're willing to give Foote the benefit of the doubt. --Wendy Smith

                        Book Description

For more than five decades, Horton Foote, "the Chekhov of the small town," has chronicled the changes in American life -- both intimate and universal. His adaptation of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and his original screenplay Tender Mercies earned him Academy Awards. He received an Indie Award for Best Writer for The Trip to Bountiful and a Pulitzer Prize for The Young Man from Atlanta.

In his plays and films, Foote has returned over and over again to Wharton, Texas, where he was born and where he lives, once again, in the house in which he grew up. Now for the first time, in Farewell, Foote turns to prose to tell his own story and the stories of the real people who have inspired his characters. His memoir is both a celebration of the immense importance of community and evidence that even a strong community cannot save a lost soul. Farewell is as deeply moving as the best of Foote's writing for film and theater, and a gorgeous testimony to his own faith in the human spirit.

In 1917, when Horton Foote was one year old, his family moved into a house on his grandparents property in Wharton, Texas. Seventy years later, he returned to that house where he still lives. And while the years between took this acclaimed writer many literal and figurative miles, he remained forever tied to the Texas roots that he explores in Farewell. Foote reveals memories of a complex Southern family full of secrets, an aspiring young actor shaped by the storytellers around him, and a world changing at a frenetic pace. Foote, the author of A Trip to Bountiful, remembers a time in which black and white children played together until school age, when segregation forced them apart. But by drawing on the experiences of those around him, he transforms his memoir into something else entirely: a glimpse into history, and a heartfelt tribute to the passions, ideals, and complexities of small-town American life in the early part of this century. It is also a testimony to the power of storytelling. There is a frank simplicity in Foote's telling that makes Farewell a profoundly moving and illuminating reading experience, one that will long be remembered.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Treasure.......2006-09-14

Reading Farewell, it is hard to imagine how Horton Foote ever followed the path in life that he ultimately took. Yet the tiny town of Wharton, Texas, did produce a legendary American writer, and his memoir about growing up in small-town Texas is a charming, well-crafted pleasure to read. The book brought back some similar childhood memories. But Foote's clean writing and vivid descriptions will also delight readers unfamiliar with this forgotten way of life.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Patina of Memories..........2004-01-07

As someone who grew up in a small town in Texas, I can identify with so much of this book. My late Mother's childhood and her stories of growing up in a rural area with colorful characters are very similar to Mr. Foote's story. If you didn't grow up in this era or in a small town, these stories may not have the charm I feel about them, but Horton Foote could bring a tear to a glass eye with his charming memories, and I will bet that he can tug at your heartstrings as well. There is a place for sentiment and burnished memories in this busy life of ours, and I found myself wanting more after reading this memoir. As I read this book, I found myself envisioning the whole story in a pleasant sepia toned, soft cocoon of a state of mind. You come too.

                        3 out of 5 stars It takes a village..........2001-05-05

Among all the facinating characters of the small town, Mr. Foote must be the town gossip (but not a malicious one). Seems like Mr. Foote knew EVERYONE... and I don't think he left anybody out, either. Fun to read, good storytelling style, but it seemed more like a series of great characters sketches than a "real" memoir. At the end I was frustrated that I didn't find out more about how he got started as an actor/playwrite/etc. But that's nothing a sequel won't solve.

                        4 out of 5 stars A Texas Childhood.......2000-11-04

Think life in a small town is idyllic? Think again. Horton Foote gives us a portrait of his home town, complete with the details many wish to forget. Pettiness. Alcoholism. Racism.

At the same time, Foote describes his childhood in tones that leave a lasting impression of roots and home. Of growing up and new responsibility. Of family.

Foote has shared with us his appreciation for small town life in such great works as "To Kill a Mockingbird", "The Trip to Bountiful" and now "Farewell". Enjoy.

                        5 out of 5 stars Childhood Remembered.......2000-07-12

I just finished re-reading this book, and enjoyed it more this time than previously, probably because I literally devoured the first read. I come from a rather limited circle of family and was enchanted by the seemingly endless supply of relatives and their stories. To be embraced by such an environment as a child and to relate this to the reader is to share a very precious gift. Thank you Mr. Foote, and please give us a sequel.
