Running wild.......2006-08-30
Like Mark Waid before him, Geoff Johns managed to breathe new life into the Flash during his long run on the series, particularly his re-vamping of the scarlet speedster's rogues gallery. Rogue War culminates Johns' monumental run on the series, bringing the long brewing war between the reformed villains and the Rogues to a head, with the Flash and Keystone City smack in the middle. Rogue War starts off with glimpses at the various Rogues and reformed villains: Mirror Master, Heat Wave, Captain Cold, the Trickster (new and old), the Top, etc.; as well as a startling revelation about the mother of the new Captain Boomerang. Everything comes to a close when Zoom returns to the scene, and Wally, Jay Garrick, and Kid Flash find themselves over their heads surrounded on all sides, and an ally returns to help them one last time. Though it takes what would be an otherwise hokey turn, Rogue War's conclusion and climax work surprisingly well. The art by Howard Porter and Livesay is great as always as well, helping make this package all the sweeter. All in all, you'll most likely read better super hero sagas, but you can certainly do far, far worse than Rogue War, which further cements fan favorite writer Geoff Johns as the best thing to happen to the Flash since Mark Waid.
Great Flash Story!!!.......2006-08-13
This book is good, goes into detail about a lot of the rogues which is cool, and includes a short bio on most characters at the beginning so even people new to the Flash can enjoy it.
The story is great, and reveals a whole lot of secrets of the DC universe involving the Rogues and the Flash.
We see a lot of villians and that's a plus, throw in an appearence of Barry Allen and you have it, Rogue War. Good book, must have for any comic fan.
The only bad thing is I hate the way Wally is drawn, even if he has matured and what not he doesn't need to be like every other muscle bound hero, that and Wally doesn't crack one joke during the entire thing? Come on, even if Linda(his wife) has him in line he should still have his old personality.
Overall this is a good book, though I was hoping for glossy pages, but you can't have everything!
THE CONTINUING ROGUE/FLASH SAGA TAKES SOME NEW TWISTS.......2006-03-28
The Flash: Rogue War basically picks up where the previous Flash trade paperback collection, "The Secret of Barry Allen" left off. It reprints Flash ½, 212, 218, and 220 - 225 in a story that has the Flash as pretty much a guest star in his own title until the final quarter of the book. The Flash's Rogues are a divided group with Heatwave, the original Trickster, Pied Piper, and Magenta all working for the FBI in trying to bring the rest of the Rogues to justice. To this end, the body of the original Captain Boomerang has been stolen and taken to a secret lab where they intend to revive the dead villain long enough to find out key information about the Rogues. Ashley Zolomon is taken against her will to be the one to talk to Boomerang.
Meanwhile the other Rogues including Captain Cold, Weather Wizard, The Top, Murmur, the New Trickster and others are hot on their heels and determined to find Boomerang's body and take out the turncoats. Things get especially nasty as these guys, particularly the Mirror Master show no qualms about killing anyone who gets in their way, often in a very creative and sadistic way. This eventually leads to an all-out battle royal between the two factions with the Flash, Kid Flash, and the Golden Age Flash, Jay Garrick, caught in the middle.
But that's the least of Flash's troubles...his arch-enemy the twisted reverse Flash Zoom has returned and, in his own sick way, wants to make Wally West a better hero by making him feel the pain of loss. He recruits the original Professor Zoom and builds a cosmic treadmill to continually move time backwards to make Flash relive the moment when his wife Linda was hurt and lost the twins she was carrying. Zoom's powers are more than Wally can handle but help soon arrives from an unexpected source.
While I enjoyed the Secret of Barry Allen I thought Rogue War was even better. It resolves a lot of things about the whole Rogues Gallery and explains the almost symbiotic relationship and rather unique code of honor that they maintain. We also learn a bit more about the new Captain Boomerang including a startling revelation about who is mother is. It's interesting to hear Ashely Zolomon talk about the difference between the Rogues of Gotham and those of Keystone City. Johns does a great job of juggling the various personalities of the Rogues and making them each unique in more ways than just their costumes and powers. As always the art by Howard Porter and Livesay is outstanding. Bold and yet it never seeks to overpower the reader. A cover gallery is included.

Book Description
Amidst the myth and folklore of Tavistock, one tale above all others strikes fear into the hearts of the townspeople—that of the murders on the Abbot’s Way. One cold winter, many years ago, a young acolyte led a group of fellow novices in the theft of their abbot’s wine store. Later, consumed by guilt and fear of discovery, he was driven to commit still more crimes. As legend has it, the devil himself meted out his punishment, leading the acolyte and his cohorts to their deaths on the treacherous Devon moors. Now, in the autumn of 1322, it looks as if history is repeating itself. Abbot Robert has found his wine barrel empty, and a body has been discovered on the moors. Furnshill and Puttock are called upon to investigate, but the case seems only to become increasingly complicated. It soon becomes apparent that it’s not just wine that’s missing from the abbey—and that the body on the moors isn’t the last.

The Case of the Missing Wine.......2006-08-22
Michael Jecks gave up a career in the computer industry when he began writing the internationally successful Templar series. Well all I can say is the Computer Industries loss is the reader's gain. He has now written about a score of the Knights Templar mystery books featuring Sir Baldwin de Furnshill and Bailiff Simon Puttock and there are more to follow. Michael's books are full of intrigue and mystery and they are particularly well researched. Mr. Jecks lives in the area he writes about and I am sure this must assist him a great deal with his background research.
14th century England was riddled with myths and legends dating back to before the Romans came. The people of Devon were just as superstitious as all the rest. But one tale strikes terror into the hearts of the people of Tavistock, the tale of the murders that have taken place on the Abbot's Way. It is said that a young acolyte who stole the abbot's wine was led to his death on the treacherous moors by non other than the devil himself.
Now in late 1322, it looks as though history may be repeating itself. The present Abott, Robert, has found his wine barrel empty and a body has been found out on the moors.
Sir Baldwin and Simon are called to investigate, but it soon becomes apparent that there is more than wine missing from the Abbey, and the body out on the moors is not the last.

Book Description
Citizenship, Inclusion, and Democracy explores the conceptual and empirical significance of the work of leading contemporary political philosopher, Iris Marion Young and her work in the field of education. In the past two decades political philosophers have begun to investigate normative theorizing in both educational theory and the philosophy of education, raising awareness in these previously neglected areas. Now, prevailing in the areas of theory, research, policy, and practice, these subjects take center stage in the debate about the profound impact of normative theorizing on education, examining the issues of supporting a publicly mandated system of education that remains open to all students within a particular society, regardless of differentiating circumstances and characteristics, as well as the development of equitable provisions for diverse groups. In this monograph, six expertly written essays discuss the importance of Youngrsquo;s theoretical work and critical social analysis on the topics of differentiated citizenship, group-based politics, social justice, difference, democracy, equality, and inclusion, with particular focus on the educational import of these issues. Concluding with a reply from Young, this collection illuminates the discussion about the centrality of public education in a modern, pluralistic society.

Book Description
Justice and Generosity presents a collection of original essays by leading scholars on the social and political philosophies of the Hellenistic period, covering the work of both Greek and Roman thinkers such as Cicero, Seneca, Epicurus, and the Cynics. It challenges the conventional view of Hellenistic philosophy as apolitical, and offers a fresh and comprehensive guide to the main currents of social and political philosophy in a period of increasing interest to classicists, philosophers, and cultural and intellectual historians.
Book Description
Even the most upbeat caregiver is susceptible to burnout and depression. Written by a medical doctor and a Tibetan monk and teacher, Medicine and Compassion taps Tibetan Buddhism for practical tools that caregivers can use to revitalize their spirits. For anyone facing tragedies such as a terminally ill relative, friends or family facing a long convalescence, or even acute anger at an illness, this timely book opens paths to renewed patience, kindness, and effectiveness.

Compasion for caretakers and self.......2007-03-31
This book should be compulserary reading for caretakers. It can show how to deal with the stress and "burnout" of peole in all fields. I learned how better deal with my terminal illnes. Whereas, I do not agree with the later stages of the "bardo" ( the dying process of 40+ days) from the Tibetan / Buddhist point of view, all else was quite perffect. For one to impliment the suggestions in this book are , in my experience, guarenteed to ellivate an individuals ability to be compasionate toward life itself. Thank you, Tom J. Sawyer, Rochester, N.Y.
healing body and soul.......2005-10-17
Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche is a highly-respected Tibetan lama who heads a large monastery in Nepal and has active Dharma centers in a number of Western countries
(see gomdeusa.org). He is a pure-hearted and open-minded teacher who indeed embodies the Buddhist ideal of compassion and wisdom combined. The ongoing "meetings of the minds" (the Mind and Life seminars with H.H the Dalai Lama being probably the best-known example), focussing on Mind and Meditation, are attracting wide interest; the theme of Mind, Meditation and Medecine may resonate even more, given the number of books appearing in that general area, of which this one is surely among the best.
Compact and Helpful Overview.......2005-07-15
This book is quite brief, and offers the reader a compact and concise overview of Tibetan Buddhism's approach to medicine, caregiving, and death. It is not necessary to be a Buddhist to gain insight from this book, and I wish I had had access to it years ago when I was caring for an ill relative. Should be purchased by libraries.
Timeless Wisdom.......2004-12-03
Medicine & Compassion is an important book. It should be required reading for physicians, medical students, nurses, caregivers, and hospice staff. Every family should have it on their bookshelf. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and even non-religious people will benefit from this book because the ideas are about the human condition which transcends all differences of faith. In a word, this book is a treasure.
We all grow old, get sick, and die. Impermanence, uncertainty, and sorrow permeate our very existence. Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and David R. Shlim, M.D., answer the important questions of why we get sick and to how to respond with compassion and mercy, when illness or impending death are at hand. One could say that it is a manual to understanding our own nature and mortality.
The narrative tone of the book is intelligent and merciful - never sugary or overdone. I could really feel the subtle, yet vibrant life energy of the book as it conjured forgotten images and feelings. It caused me to reflect on the end of life care that I administered for my parents and brother. I was able to see what was good and what was lacking in my care for them, without feeling a sense of regret. In fact, I gained a sense of optimism for the future.
As a writer on Buddhist healing, I found this to be a perfectly cut gem. Its words and inferences reflected the light of wisdom. I found it an invaluable tool for encouraging the sick and suffering. I was especially impressed with the author's end of life guidance in the chapter "Easing the Process of Dying." As a Buddhist for more than 30 years, I've read many works on death, dying, and the bardos. Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and Dr. Shlim explain this subject in a way that can satisfy the average person or the spiritually advanced. Most of all, the reader will be inspired to improve their own life and mind.
I highly recommend this book. Just as an outdoorsman needs a compass, so too can this book guide one in challenging times.

A remarkable book.......2004-10-31
Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and David Shlim have articulated beautifully an invaluable lesson in learning how to encompass compassion into our encounters with patients. As nurses and physicians we work with great dedication and energy to help our patients move toward a healthier state of being. The process sometimes seems very easy and gratifying however, sometimes we are stuck and not sure why. This book offers practical advice to the reader of how to more effectively approach each patient with kindness, wisdom and care. Since reading the book, I have noticed subtle changes in my own approach to patients and have felt a new energy and insight.

This book has got great info inside. Where the drinks were first made to when they were made. It's a great little book for ideas, because it has what flavourings are in each drink so you can kind of make up the drinks for yourself but cheaply.

My Hero.......2007-07-01
I adore Ruth McDowell's work and have felt that way for years. This book is a wonderful book, full of great pictures of truly great quilts. I've spent much time looking through the book. I pick it up every now and then and just enjoy it. It is an awe inspiring work and it is also thought provoking.
Inspirational, not instructional.......2007-03-10
The originality of the quilts in this book are awe inspiring, but don't expect to get any instructional how-to's. The author uses some verbage to describe what motivated her designs (many flowers and plants transformed into fiber art), but leaves the actual making of such to the imagination of the reader. This is a digest of the author's evolution as a quilter.
Quilting unbound!.......2001-07-13
Ruth McDowell's well-documented journey to develop an extremely personal and artistic quilting 'statement' almost leaves you breathless. She has been able to adapt complex photos and themes into vibrant fabric art, using mostly traditional quilting techniques. However, her innovative use of fabrics (plaids never had it so good), shapes, and design concepts truly rate the title of "Art & Inspirations". A good friend with whom I shared the book got halfway through and said "I'm afraid to turn the pages - they're all so wonderful I can hardly stand it." My sentiments exactly.
clear inspiration, even for a novice like myself!.......1999-08-19
What a joyous collection of inspiring images! This amazing teacher creates paintings with fabric. Her wording is clear and uncomplicated for the novice and, I am sure, challenging enough for the seasoned quilter. Buy this book to look at as well as to learn from! I purchased it to use as inspiration for my paintings but Ms. McDowell makes the whole process sound exciting enough to get me peicing too!
Shows the growth a True Quilt Artist.......1998-06-02
What is surprising about this book is that it is not just a text-book showing simple patterns that you can copy, nor is it a picture book of dozens of incredible quilts that you will probably never equal. Instead this is a clear-eyed tour of the history of a wonderful Quilt Artist. Ruth shows some of her first simple, but well chosen and unique quilt patterns. These simple patterns from nature, lead directly to her more complex quilts, where she shows her increased talents in dazzling quilts of landscapes and semi-abstract trees and plants. But if nothing else, this book is well worth the cost for the single quilt using her daughter's outline in translucent black cloth in an amazing picture quilt. This is a book of inspirations for quilters at all levels.

Customer Reviews:
HUGE Disappointment.......2007-09-12
This book is filled with nothing more than frivolous and useless fluff (I simply will not refer to them as "ideas"). For example, putting a detective hat atop an "R" and turning its serif into a pipe is downright childish. Seriously, any good designer or anyone with common sense would steer clear of this visually-horrifying garbage. If you are at all serious about design, pick up any/all of the Jim Krause books. This one's going to the next library book sale.
must have for graphic design students.......2007-09-10
I bought this book for my daughter, a graphic design student. She had borrowed it from a local library and said it was a "must have" that contained a wealth of knowledge and ideas. The service from Amazon was simply outstanding and my daughter was thrilled with her surprise!
Great Reference Book.......2007-06-08
This is a book that I will use over and over again!
Great for ideas to customize to your own needs.......2007-02-18
As an 8-year veteran newspaper and magazine editor, I thought this book was great for jump starting creativity without having to read all the psychobabble or starving artist type talk that some other graphic design books I've browsed at bookstores. This book was instrumental in my redesign of a magazine that recently got me an award.
If you're a veteran looking for some basic concepts to play with and customize, this book is great. If your looking for a book that tells you why 8-point fonts work great on red backgrounds with purple elephants, then this is not the book you're looking for.
it's got some great ideas.......2006-11-10
visually structured (good), very little editorial content (not-so good). it's a fair reference guide and not too expensive.

For those interested in the hardscrabble story behind Stevie Wonder, this authorized biography fleshes out some of the facts available elsewhere. This often entertaining book takes the sporadically successful tack of telling Wonder's story largely from the point of view of Lulu Hardaway, Wonder's mother. Beginning with her migration from the backwoods of Alabama to prostitution and poverty in the Northeast, the book then shifts gears to Wonder's struggle from 11-year-old prodigy and dutiful Motown employee to the creator of influential classics such as Music of My Mind, Innervisions, and Songs in the Key of Life.
In Blind Faith Wonder comes off as an inexhaustible worker undaunted by his blindness--as well as a loving son, a prankster, and a womanizer. Although he has never surpassed his artistic peak of the '70s, this book glosses over the past 20 years, offering a paean to his philanthropy and perfectionism instead. More input from the reticent Wonder would have made Blind Faith a more compelling read; instead, Hardaway's story dominates. Although well-written, fans would be better served by a biography that tells Wonder's story in a less digressive fashion. --Valerie Gregory
Book Description
Hardship, sacrifice, determination, and ultimate triumph are the elements that make up Blind Faith, the frank and compelling biography of Lula Hardaway, mother of superstar musician and singer Stevie Wonder. Written with her full cooperation and participation, this is the first ever authorized look into the life of the woman who gave birth to and nurtured one of America's greatest musicians/songwriters -- and the struggles that preceded his rise to fame and fortune.
To say that Lula Hardaway did not have an easy life is an understatement. It was a constant struggle for self-esteem and emotional survival. Yet survive she did -- a motherless child born in a sharecropper's shack in Alabama, she was passed from relative to relative, unwanted and, for the most part, unloved. As a teenager she was sent to Chicago, where she met a much older man whom she eventually married. Unfortunately, her life then took an even darker turn as he abused her and forced her to work as a prostitute. Determined to build a better life for her children, she started hiding money away, and one day successfully made her escape to Detroit.
One of her sons, Stevland Judkins, was blind from infancy. Although he presented special challenges, Lula noticed from the outset that this little boy impressed everyone he met with his outgoing personality, his intelligence, charm, and resourcefulness -- and his incredible musical talent. By age ten, he was playing and singing gospel tunes in church, and then joining adults singing rhythm and blues on the street corners of Detroit.
Eventually, word of this young phenomenon reached Berry Gordy, who was just beginning to establish himself as a creative force in Detroit's thriving music scene. Gordy dubbed the boy Little Stevie Wonder, and launched him into musical history when he signed him to his Motown label.
Stardom didn't come that easily -- there was the question of what material was best for Stevie, and then the question of what would happen to the twelve-year-old boy's voice when he reached puberty. Fortunately, the voice that emerged was even more musical and more captivating than it had been. Great care was taken in choosing his next projects and the result was a succession of top 10 -- and several number 1 -- hits.
By age twenty-one, Stevie had attained greater control of his career and finances by negotiating a new contract with Motown, which gave him complete control over the songs he recorded. What followed was a string of chart-topping albums and some of the most memorable popular music to come from the second half of the last century.
Through it all, Stevie Wonder never failed to credit his mother. When Innervisions won a Grammy award for Album of the Year in 1973, he refused to accept the award unless Lula would walk with him to the podium. He clutched his mother in front of the auditorium and in front of the millions of people watching on television, proclaiming, "Her strength has led us to this place."
Indeed, it was her strength and her belief in herself and in her sons that brought them to that place, to the very heights of success. It was her drive and her willingness to sacrifice the now for the future -- plus her abiding belief in God -- that saw them through. Blind Faith is not only the story of the birth of a superstar but also a stirring testament to a mother's love and determination and a frank and uncompromising look at how one woman's attempt to better her children's lives led to a lasting gift to the world.

Interesting only to a point. Lula plays off her sons leaving us hanging. By the time I finished the book, any compassion I had for her story was lost in the repeated saga of her own self egotisim.
Goodbye Mama - Died June 8, 2006.......2006-06-09
Lula Hardaway was a great, great lady. How many would go through what Mama went through, for the sake of her children? The difficult years of a young girl, the despicable treatment of Lula by her first husband, and her triumph over unbelieveable obstacles, is an amazing story! And her belief in her 12 year old blind son, who became Stevie Wonder, is the ultimate story of a mother's love. I knew Mama since 1965, when I began working with Steve. I spoke to her just two weeks ago, lively, funny, with a laugh that made 'me' laugh. Goodbye Mama. I miss you already.

It was truly a Miraculous Journey.
Voted Best Non Fiction 2005.......2006-03-09
This was a great book! It was wonderful to read about Stevie's mother and her struggles through the years. I grew up listening to Stevie having parents who saw his show a few times. I learned things I never knew about Stevie and his life. I highly suggest this book.
Road not Taken.......2005-03-03
This one started out so well. A fascinating life story which then morphed into the biography of a son. I picked it up on sale thinking it looked really interesting...and it was...at first. I was disappointed when Lula, the subject of the biography, was forgotten as soon as Stevie signed with Motown. We no longer have Lula's biography, we have "Stevie Wonder: The Early Years". After the Stevie section started we merely get asides mentioning that Lula is divorced, Lula is remarried, Lula is divorced, again. Not what I signed up for when I started reading it.
