"Just as the ladies have settled into Covington, developers threaten their valley, Hannah leads the fight to protect the neighborhood, but her neighbors, rather than be grateful for her devotion to the cause, are suspicious of her intentions as a newcomer. Amelia becomes involved with a dashing older man who sets her heart aflutter in spite of her friends' concerns that he may not be the charming suitor he seems. Grace and Bob open a teahouse together, and discover that there is nothing easy about tea. And with a bit of a nudge, the ladies will help their nonagenarian neighbor become a blushing bride. Joan Medlicott warmed the hearts of booksellers and readers with her first novel, and she returns with another wonderful experience."

Gardens Good for Light Reading.......2007-10-06
This book is good for light reading. It's a little like the "Golden Girls" without the humor. Each of the three ladies in the book have a definite personality and obstacles to overcome in order to live a fulfilling life. The message here is that life doesn't end at 65 and new beginnings are possible. While some of the situations seem a bit contrived and you do have suspend belief the book doesn't suffer for it. That is the wonderful thing about books.
Another great book-great down to earth ladies!.......2007-09-10
In this sequel to the first Ladies of Covington Send Their Love, the 3 ladies Hannah, Grace and Amelia's lives continue in their new home in Covington.
A landowner of Covington poses a threat to buy out the property there, and the ladies, who are very upset by this take action, especially Hannah who goes all the way to the city coalition, environmental agencies, and gathers the support of the whole neighborhood to hang on to the beautiful Covington area. The whole town turns against Hannah for this, and she almost gets herself into trouble with some of the people. It is the wealthy Maxwell's that will step in here in the end, and Hannah will get more then she ever thought possible.
Grace is still in a courtship with her Rich, and the two decide to open a tea shop, which turns out to be a very bad choice since it takes all of Grace's time away from everything else, and she has no time for rest. They have this little shop up and running well, but decide later it is best to sell it out.
Amelia, the most fragile lady of the bunch, and always headed for trouble gets herself into a car wreck going up to visit her gay male friend Mike. The man that comes to rescue her is Lance, who seems to fall in love with Amelia at first sight. He soon takes over her whole life so that she has no time for anyone else or any of her photography. Amelia falls under his spell and is headed for a heap of trouble. Hannah and Grace try to warn her, but she goes on ahead with this courtship until she gets badly hurt.
Tyler, Rich's grandson and Grace's "adopted" grandson is having a problem when his dad is in love with a new lady, Emily. Tyler and his dad Russell have a very bad time for awhile until they get things straightened out between all of them. Tyler has had a very bad time losing his mother to a bad car accident and can't understand why his dad loves someone else now.
And Grace also has made great friends with 81-year old Lurina who is a lonely old maid 81 years of age. When 'old man,' Joseph Elisha comes along though, the two have a romance and get married. Lurina is a very isolated type of soul and doesn't like to wander out of the house at all. So the ladies try to help her plan a wedding. When the newspaper gets hold of this story though, and reporters persist on barging in. Lurina feels threatened and wants no part of a big wedding after the ladies went to all the trouble of planning a fancy one. So Lurina and Joe get married in her home, but still find the reporters there anyway after someone spills the beans about the private ceremony.
The Gardens of Covington: A Novel .......2007-09-03
The Gardens of Covington is a part of an interesting and fun series, While you could pick up the story without reading the first book(s) I think it more enjoyable to read such books in sequence.
Joan A. Medlicott writes well, and combines the story of three, "Senior" ladies with recipes, gardening information, AWA intertwining into the books, their families/friends. The series is in the category of "Light" reading, and by now, I have read about 6 books in the series and am hooked.
Now I am worrying that she will stop writing more books in this series - then what will I do?
Excellent.......2007-09-01
I absolutely love all of her books. I am aLSO ONE OF THOSE SENIOR CITIZENS AND i CHUCKLE AT SO MANY OF HER SITUATIONS IN HER BOOKS. sO TRUE TO LIFE!!!!
Even better than the first book of the series.......2007-08-06
This book marks the return to the beautiful community of Covington in the mountains of North Carolina. The three friends, Grace, Hannah, and Amelia, are well-settled in their renovated house and are enjoying life and their new friendships. Grace and her friend Bob decide to go into business together and they start a tearoom. Amelia pursues photography with her friend and mentor, Mike, but the friendship is disturbed when Amelia becomes attracted to a man named Lance. Hannah indulges her passion for flowers and gardening and works to keep developers out of their neighborhood. Difficult situations arise and the ladies learn to deal with them and with each other. Romances bloom, sometimes in unexpected ways. All in all, this is a very satisfying read and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Hester Prynne never had it so good! The year is 1899, and Olympia Biddeford, the headstrong daughter of a Boston Brahmin family, has decided to test the limits of her cloistered world. Spending the summer at her father's New Hampshire estate, the teenage heroine of Fortune's Rocks is entranced with the visiting salon of artists, writers, and lawyers. She's especially captivated, however, by John Haskell, a charismatic physician who ministers to the blue-collar community in the nearby mill towns. This middle-aged Good Samaritan hires Olympia to assist him as a nurse, and their collaboration soon evolves into a fiery love affair. Alas, it's only a matter of weeks before this passionate exercise in managed care is exposed--with disastrous consequences for the young, impregnated heroine. Even her adoring father now considers her "an overplump sixteen-year-old girl whose judgment can no longer be trusted," and insists that she break off her relationship:
"There is nothing more to be said on this subject," he says. She bites her lip to keep from crying out further. She holds the arms of her chair so tightly she later will have cramps in her fingers. She will refuse to obey him, she thinks. She will accept his implied challenge and set off on her own. But in the next moment, she asks herself: How will she be able to do that? Without her father's support, she cannot hope to survive. And if she herself does not survive, then a child cannot live."
In the end, Anita Shreve's seventh novel is a polished, supremely entertaining variation on Wuthering Heights, with Olympia and Haskell sitting in for Catherine and Heathcliff. The author did some meticulous research for her New England background, which gives this study of one particular wayward woman some extra historical heft. Some readers may find the plot twists a bit pat. And despite Olympia's efforts to be an independent woman, she overcomes her trials largely as a result of her family's wealth and station, which takes the edge off Shreve's feminist message. Still, Fortune's Rocks is a romance in the classic sense of the word, and should be enjoyed as such, unless the reader is absolutely allergic to happy endings. --Ted Leventhal

Everywhere hailed as the richest, most compelling work yet by the author of the #1 bestseller The Pilot's Wife, this magnificent novel transports us to the turn of the last century, to the world of a prominent Boston family summering on the New Hampshire coast, and to the social orbit of a spirited young woman who falls into a passionate, illicit affair with an older man--with cataclysmic results.

Another Excellent Novel from Anita Shreve.......2007-09-12
I am so fascinated by this novel. I wanted to find another novel following the life of Olympia. Anita Shreve makes you feel as though the characters are your friends, family. Since I discovered this book, I have picked up all of Anita Shreve's books. She is my favorite author!!!!
My new Shreve favorite!.......2007-08-08
Again, Ms. Shreve has shocked me with her strikingly beautiful prose and sadly human characters. Although the end of this book was just a little bit too filled with "perfection" for my taste, I truly found myself aching for Olympia and her lost love, and debating who the boy should end up with. To me, those are markers of a truly good story with meaningful characters, and for that, I applaud Ms. Shreve.
Crummy.......2007-07-14
I'm sorry I wasted my money on this book.
It was boring and drawn out. Terrible.
a waste of my time..........2007-07-14
As a teacher, I have waited all year for my ultimate vacation - to sit on my deck and read several novels that I have set aside. It is mid-July and after finally finishing all my school obligations, I picked up "Fortune's Rock" as my first choice. I feel compelled to report that this is perhaps the worst book I have spent the time to "skim". I found it so predictable that after 45 pages, I only needed to speed read the rest...just in case a twist might be waiting (in spite of my family encouraging me "to just put it down and go on to the next"). I found that the ending was equally as formulaic as the start. This book is, at best, a cheap romance novel and it seriously embarasses me that general population would find it warranting any literary attention. I must admit that I was NOT a huge fan of 'The Pilot's Wife', which I listened to on audio tape while laying ceramic tile, so I should have been forewarned. But, I definitely will not waste any more of my time on any Shreve creation (nor recommend any to my students, colleagues or family).
Ewwww...........2007-07-08
I generally love Anita Shreve. I've read most of her books (one of my favorite books of all time is "Lost in Snow.") But this one was truly disturbing because of its supposed "happy ending." I was OK with the idea that Olympia was swept up in a hormone-induced sexual infatuation that clouded her judgment (OK meaning that I believed it, not that I condone it), and having watched many episodes of "To Catch a Predator," I buy that a respected, married doctor would give up just about everything for some forbidden nookie. The suffering they both went through as a consequence of their actions also was believable to me, and not entirely unjust. But I was very annoyed by the ending tying up everything with a bow. Ick. I felt that normalized what was very unhealthy and wrong. And the one thing I did NOT buy was Olympia & Haskell as the happy, cozy married couple. Their entire relationship was built upon lust and little else...I think they would have had more conflict once the limits surrounding them were lifted. That seemed very unrealistic. For a great book about this very often written about "jailbait"/predator relationship, stick with "Lolita." Nabokov accurately captures the creepiness of it all while still fleshing out his characters' feelings.

Cap'n Barnacle.......2007-04-13
"Rupert and the Smuggler's Gold" was the fourth in a series of eight illustrated gamebooks starring Rupert the Bear, where the reader gets to choose their way toward adventure and sometimes treasure. This particular one sees Rupert and the reader stay over at Cap'n Barnacle's house, where there is rumoured to be a treasure left behind by smugglers. There's a couple of puzzles and a maze in this one, and it's fairly good, though I still find a couple of the puzzles a little bit frustrating. My favorite of the series was #5 "Rupert and the Pirates' Den". They're worth a look for Rupert fans.
Book Description
The well-known and very popular Catholic couple, Scott and Kimberly Hahn, have been constantly travelling and speaking all over North America for the last few years about their conversion to the Catholic Church. Now these two outstanding Catholic apologists tell in their own words about the incredible spiritual journey that led them to embrace Catholicism. Scott Hahn was a Presbyterian minister, the top student in his seminary class, a brilliant Scripture scholar, and militantly anti-Catholic ... until he reluctantly began to discover that his "enemy" had all the right answers. Kimberly, also a top-notch theology student in the seminary, is the daughter of a well-known Protestant minister, and went through a tremendous "dark night of the soul" after Scott converted to Catholicism.
Their conversion story and love for the Church has captured the hearts and minds of thousands of lukewarm Catholics and brought them back into an active participation in the Church. They have also influenced countless conversions to Catholicism among their friends and others who have heard their powerful testimony.
Written with simplicity, charity, grace and wit, the Hahns' deep love and knowledge of Christ and of Scripture is evident and contagious throughout their story. Their love of truth and of neighbor is equally evident, and their theological focus on the great importance of the family, both biological and spiritual, will be a source of inspiration for all readers.

Rome Sweet Home.......2007-09-07
This book is the Journey taken by Scott and Kimberly Hahn to the Catholic Church. They write from the bottom of their heart. You feel the pain they are experiencing during this time and you yearn to see this family united in their beliefs.
Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism
I cried with them and rejoiced with them as I read their compelling story. I feel renewed in my faith by their tumultuous journey.
Great read!.......2007-08-28
After reading My Life On The Rock, by Jeff Cavins, I was dieing to know what his wife must have experienced during her husbands "coming home". It was great to be able to read about Scott's wife's experience. I think all Catholics should recommend this book to their non-catholic friends and family!
Stunning.......2007-07-19
This book was amazing, I felt myself going through the ups and downs of the Hahns. Great primer for the more difficult apologetics books.
Rome Sweet Home:Our Journey to Catholicism.......2007-06-10

Working hard, or hardly working?.......2005-10-05
I, too own the Betty Crocker Cookbook, and I, too, am capable of a simple search & replace string for phrases. It seems to me that the author simply took recipies from established cookbooks, and replaced every instance of the word "butter" with "milk-free margerine", the word "milk" with "milk-free milk substitute", and "cream" with the words "non-dairy richwhip". With a remarkable lack of knowledge about the difference between lactose intolerance and actual non-dairy living, she approaches the reader with what were probably good intentions, but merely comes off as misinformed. This book is fine if you are lactose intolerant. However, if you are truly trying to live diary-free, give it a miss. Also, if you're frugal, just take a pencil to your battered copy of Betty Crocker, and sub out the ingredients yourself. Maybe a publisher will buy your work, too.
Too much margarine!!.......2004-12-18
If you are looking for a dairy-free cookbook that does not rely on the use of margarine, this is NOT the one you should buy!
I was very disappointed to find that a huge number of recipes in this book require the use of margarine. Margarine contains unhealthy hydrogenated trans-fats, and it is extremely bad for you. It is not something I want to be putting into my body, and I am a bit surprised that Ms. Zukin would choose this as a butter substitute.
There are other substitutes (such as unrefined coconut fat) that are much healthier. Unfortunately, I do not have the time or patience to experiment with replacing margarine with coconut fat in so many of her recipes.
I have yet to find a dairy-free cookbook that provides a healthy butter substitute.
great if you love milk, but someone you love can't have it.......2002-09-07
my boyfriend of 2 years is lactose intolerant, and I love milk, cheese, creamy soups, butter, basically everything he CAN'T eat. as we've become more health/money concious, and I've been cooking at home almost every night, this became a dilema.
enter Jane Zukin's book. it's a lactose - intolerance reference guide and a bunch of great recipes in one. the section on hidden sources of lactose and careful label reading was particularly enlightning (who would have thought plain pre-processed bread crumbs had lactose ingredients?), as was the section on fast foods. now I'll be a lot more comfortable eating at Burger King with him. the substitution suggestions are also helpful, and conveniently located in an easy to use table.
but the main thing I love about this book are the recipes! so far they have all been clearly explained, easy to make, and delicious. I love the fact that nutritional information is included with each one (be aware that her portion sizes were a lot smaller then mine, but I DO cook for 3 college boys on a regular basis).
as an example - her vegetable linguine. my boyfriend begs me to add meat when I tell him I'm making it for dinner, so I give in and add shrimp to it. when we sit down to dinner, after all 8 servings are devoured, he says, that was great, and it really didn't need meat at all. first time he's EVER indicated a recipe would be better WITHOUT meat! that alone would put it on my list of things to serve often, even it weren't one of the most fabulous tasting recipes I've ever found.
the only criticism I have is that so many of the recipes rely on "milk - substitute", "soy-cheese-substitute" or "milk-free-margerine". but it does keep me thinking about it as I prepare a complete meal.
definately buy this if you or someone you love is lactose intolerant. it will become one of your most frequently used resources and recipe books.
Not for those with Milk Allergy.......2000-10-03
Ms. Zukin's book is probably an invaluable resource for those who cannot tolerate lactose, but those of us who are allergic to milk protein will find dangerous information in this book.
She lists as "dairy-free" products which clearly contain milk (Wendy's bread sticks contail "skim milk"; their hamburger buns contain "sodium caseinate"). These are not items that have changed over the years; my dairy-allergic son has never been able to eat Wendy's buns, and he's nearly 13 years old.
The recipes are fairly good, though I get irked by reading "milk substitute" in them - I'd rather see the brand name of the product she used (soy milk tastes very different from rice milk, for instance).
With this book, as with every packaged food product, you must read carefully and be certain the food she mentions is safe. You can't take her word for it. The title, therefore, is quite misleading.
I won't buy another book written by this author.
A very thorough book about all aspects of living dairy free.......1999-07-16
As the mother of a three year old daughter with both milk and egg allergies, I found this book was extremely helpful with all aspects of living milk free. It includes sections on infants and children, shopping and eating out as well as supplying addresses for some of the better known fast food chains who will send you updated information on which of their products are dairy free. The recipes are great and even include some that are egg free. I personally used egg replacer(found in health food stores) and a teaspoon of arrowroot(for firmness) in some of her baking recipes and most came out very good. The only problem with including products that are dairy free is that manufactures frequently change recipes and I would not want anyone to buy somethi ng from these lists thinking they are dairy free when they may not still be.

Good idea, but..........2007-02-25
I've been looking at cookbooks for people with allergies to dairy, soy, eggs and nuts. I was excited by the title of this book, but after looking at many of the recipes (especially in the dessert section) I was disappointed. The author calls for margarine in many of the soy-free recipes--but as far as I know a soy-free margarine does not exist.
I recommend the cookbook "150 Vegan Favorites." Solomon has many soy-free, healthy and exciting recipes.
Lifesaver for vegetarian allergy sufferers.......2006-05-02
I was so relieved to find this allergy free vegetarian recipe book after being diagnosed with mulitple food allergies. The recipes are user-friendly and unlike other allergy cookbooks I didn't have to make a special trip to the health food store to purchase special food substitutes and expensive ingredients in order to start cooking. My husband and I take turns preparing dinner and he enjoys the simplicity of the recipes and actually looks forward to serving up a new meal that is both "safe " for me to eat and delicious for the rest of the family to enjoy. I am interested in learning more about Dr. Rettner's chiropractic treatment for curing food allergies and I plan to look for someone in my area who is familiar with this technique. I highly reccomend this uncomplicated cookbook for allergy sufferers who would prefer not to have to take formal cooking classes before preparing delicious meals while they adjust to a new way of eating. The book has been a lifesaver for me!
Redundant information.......2001-06-09
I did not care much for this book. The recipes provided can be found in any cookbook dealing with allergies, and there was only a limited number of allergenic foods for which recipes were given. However, there is some useful information given in the book that would be helpful to a person just beginning to manage food allergies. Also, there is a little information on how to manage allergies naturally, through chiropractic manipulation. The reason I only gave this book a 2-star rating is that the average chiropractor will not know the techniques used, but of course one can always purchase the videos advertised in the book explaining to one's chiropractor how to do these tests and manipulations. I feel that if an author is going to present information in a book, one should not have to pay extra (by buying videos) to get the information needed.

Should have stopped at one book.......2006-08-12
While Block's first coffee table book on the subject of contemporary marbles was a fine piece of work, his second book is not, and anybody who says it is is either blind or crazy or a homer. Marble collectors love to see nice pictures of beautiful marbles, and while there are indeed LOTS of marble pictures in this book to look at, the vast majority of them are of such poor quality that it actually becomes a painful process to keep flipping the pages to see more of them. But that's not the worst part of the book. More egregious than the photography is the organization of the book. It is a haphazard mess of marbles, with no clear sense of how they are grouped and why. It actually starts out as if it's going somewhere, but then completely falls apart, as if the author was being whipped while on a chain gang in order to get the book finished by some crazy deadline. It ended up being maddening to flip through, since marbles were thrown together in bizarre ways that just leave you frustrated.
In summary, save your money and find places online instead where you can find some true quality pictures of marbles with MUCH better stories and descriptions behind them. Hopefully somebody else comes out with a better book to redeem the marble community from the pain of this one.
Outstanding, Expertly Written and Illustrated Volume-A Must Have!.......2006-02-24
This book is clearly one of only two that specialize in the hot collectible of contemporary marbles. Mark Block is the reknown and acknowledged expert in the field. This is easily seen in the in-depth research he has done, the cooperation he received from the Corning Museum of Glass, and all of the beautiful works that were incorporated into this exciting volume. I only hope that future books by Mark Block will meet or exceed his own expectations. If they do, the glass community will be all the better for it. He is truly Mr. Ambassador when it comes to contemporary marbles and related art glass.
Felon writes book what's wrong with Schiffer.......2006-02-18
For those of you who aren't aware Mark Block was convicted of a felony for screwing around with marble artist creations. He was also charged with faking marks on marbles to increase value although these were dropped as part of a plea deal. So my question is what publisher in their right mind releases a book supposedly by an expert who has a felony conviction specifically related to the subject he is an expert in? Obviously not a very conscientious publisher. Let me be the first to publicly state that I will boycott all Schiffer books until they get this criminal off their roster -- and no this doesn't apply to the rest of the Blocks. For those of you who want to support criminal behavior and want to buy this book beware the pictures aren't good, each one has a reflection on it, and the marbles in the book are certainly not first quality. By the way Mark, how many of the marbles in the book that were given as "donations" actually were "mistakenly" sold by you or your brother? Oh, I'm sorry you can't sell marbles - that's against your probation isn't it?
Excellent work on contemporary marbles........2006-01-10
I haven't been collecting art glass marbles all that long, but I do know a beautiful book when I see one. The pictures are fantastic, clear and cover every possible type of handmade marble. I haven't had time to read the entire book, but I have paged through it several times just to marvel at the photography. What I have read seems to be concise and well written. I'm sure that I will find it to be a valuable source of reference for years to come.
There's only one problem... every page shows a different type of marble that I need to add to my collection... this could get expensive!

Excellent Sales Tool.......2007-06-27
I worked indirectly for Bryan. He was in charge of the Financial Advisors in the region I worked .I was a dual employee of a bank as well as brokerage. He held a monthly meeting for all the Advisors and Licensed Financial Sales Consultants .He made all his meeting very interesting and productive. I always took away a valuable lesson from these sessions. He is a powerful public speaker and always delivered tips and points that made me an excellent sales person. Because of Bryan I am now working for the largest mutual fund company in the Nation. I highly recommend reading his book.
Sales Strategies.......2007-06-04
An easy to read style which gives hands on and practical advice everyone in sales (regardless of your industry ) should read. It is Head and Shoulders above the other sales books in which I have read. Mr. Mitchell's approach to planning and executing sales strategies are simple but brilliant! Top Producer will give you the edge necessary to increase sales performance. I myself have 17 years of sales experience behind me and feel that Top Producer has given me insight into what I have been missing all these years!
Worked for me.......2004-05-22
It's high time Bryan shared his ideas. I have 17+ years in sales experience as a financial consultant, and for a brief while, worked under Mr. Mitchell as my sales manager. I felt at the time that his sales meetings stood apart from those of other managers. Rather then just berate the staff about "increased production" Bryan brought useful, pragmatic material to his meetings to increase our sales. These came in the form of fresh ideas, or new spins on old sales techniques. His suggestions are interesting and useful. I integrated several of his ideas into practice and had a very successful career. One point Bryan made that I found to be true is that many sales professionals have no plan, and "any plan is better then no plan at all". Bryan takes this a step further by outlining a specific plan that anyone can use sprinkled with interesting, practical ideas. Furthermore, Bryan is not just driven by revenue, a mistake many managers make, he was the only sales manager I had ( and I had many) that openly spoke of, and concerned himself with "the good of the shareholders", a sentiment rarely heard in an era of upper management corruption these days. I encourage anyone in sales, or interested in a sales career to read this book.
