A Story of Romance, Heartache, Hope and Struggle.......2006-06-13
Those women of Lowell are at it again! The Pattern of Her Heart takes us back in time to the pre-Civil War days when our country was divided by economic dependence on slavery in the south and the morality of using slaves to increase the wealth of the owners. Put a killer epidemic and the burgeoning financial disaster looming in the north in the mix and you have a story of desperation and hope.
Our first lady of the story is Jasmine. She and her husband have been very successful in raising horses and selling them.
Jasmine's brother works for the Corporation that runs the various textile mills in town. The economic outlook for the mills is bleak. The girls that work in the mills are being laid off, some of the boarding houses are closing and the financially over-extended (Brother) is desperate for money when they get news that a killer epidemic has hit their home in the south and virtually their entire family has been wiped out.
With a baby on the way and business matters to tend to, (Brother) leaves it to Jasmine to harvest the cotton crop and sell the plantation. All he wants is his money when it's settled. Jasmine arrives in Mississippi and tells all of the slaves that she is freeing them and if they would like, they can stay on to harvest the final cotton crop for wages to give them a fresh start in the north as free men and women.
At first the slaves are skeptical but when they are handed their papers of freedom, they know they can trust Jasmine and her husband to stand by their word. When the other slaves hear that Jasmine's slaves have been freed and are now working for wages, there is unrest among the other plantations.
So much so that Jasmine and her family are run out of town, the sale of the crop and plantation virtually worthless. When she returns, her brother takes matters in his own hands making deals with those who thwarted the sale in the first place.
There is also lots of romance in The Pattern of Her Heart. Elinor Brighton, a boarding house matron, is determined not to fall in love again. She has loved and lost too many times and never wants to feel the pain again but when the newly widowed preacher comes to town that familiar flutter catches her by surprise.
It also catches the preacher's rowdy daughter, Reggie, by surprise making her think Elinor befriended her only to close to her father. Reggie is determined to find out if Elinor is truly her friend or just using her to get to her father as many other women have tried.
Then there's the Irishman, Paddy, who works for Jasmine and her family. When they had to venture to Mississippi to take care of the estate they left Paddy in charge of the horse business.
While he was in charge, he caught the eye of an Irish girl new to Lowell, Mary Margaret. She was an independent girl working in the mill and living at Elinor's boarding house. Paddy thought she was a snob for not living in the Acre with the rest of the Irish folk but will these two ever turn the electricity between the two of them into something other than an argument?
fabulous insightful Antebellum historical.......2005-10-25
In 1857 Lowell, Massachusetts Nolan and Jasmine Houston pray everyday for a miracle as their five years old daughter Alice Ann struggles to recover from Scarlet Fever. When Dr. Hartzfield deems the little girl is healthy enough to celebrate her birthday that passed three months ago, the Houstons rejoice that their beloved child has healed.
Not long afterward, attorney Forbes tells Jasmine and Nolan that her father, her brother and most of her other relatives died from Yellow Fever at the family Mississippi plantation, the Willows. They need to decide what to do with the slaves and the property. Nolan and Jasmine head south to free those slaves who survived the epidemic. In Mississippi their abolitionist philosophy anger their neighbors and the few surviving relatives until someone burns down the Willows leaving Jasmine and Nolan to wonder how to keep their family and themselves safe while doing the right thing for the slaves they want to free.
THE PATTERN OF HER HEART showcases how violent the country was over slavery just prior to the Civil War. The Houstons meet derision and hatred for wanting to free her family slaves. However as noble and obvious as that seems, the pair soon find how complicated that can be. Several of those they want to liberate have no economic means of survival as they have been dependent on their owners and when the Willows is destroyed causing the Houstons to flee for Lowell they ponder how to protect those they left behind from an angry local populace. Book Three of the Lights of Lowell series is a fabulous insightful Antebellum historical.

Gone With the Wind???.......2007-09-18
First off, let me say that I am a HUGE Lisa Kleypas fan. No one writes a self-made man with SCORCHING sensuality like this author. She is in a league with just a few other authors...(McNaught, Garwood, Quinn, Howard, and Putney).
With all that being said, this was not one of my favorite's.
First of all, I really felt like I do when I watch Gone With the Wind. Scarlett is a spoiled, materialistic, self-centered character. The heroine of this novel is the same way. I tried to like Annabelle, but until the last two chapters of the book, I could barely tolerate her. She was entirely concerned about status, wealth, and landing a member of the peer. Shallow is another word I would use to describe her. Kleypas writes that she is this way to save her mother and brother from financial ruin and exploitaton, but I just didn't buy it.
Just like Rhett is obsessed with Scarlet in Gone With the Wind, so is Simon Hunt with Annabelle. I get frustrated when great heros get obsessed with shallow women..it seems like such a waste of a good man. For the life of me I have no idea why Rhett loved Scarlett and I am perplexed why a great man like Simon Hunt would be so obsessed with a woman's beauty that he'd see past her character defects.
I definitely will read the rest of this quartet...(Autumn, Winter, and Spring), but the first book is definitely not a keeper for me...a true rareity with a Kleypas novel.
Powerful start to new series.......2007-09-11
Annabelle Peyton is one of four young women who are having problems finding a husband amongst the British nobility for varying reasons. The four women, Annabelle, Daisy and Lillian Bowman, and Evie Jenner become friends and call themselves the wallflowers.
Annabelle's father died and left her and her mother penniless and Annabelle without a dowry. Even though Annabelle is beautiful, men know that if her circumstances become desperate enough they can have her as a mistress instead of marrying her. The wallflowers begin to work together to find husbands but Annabelle situation is growing desperate if she doesn't find a husband this season it is unlikely she will marry. Simon Hunt, a commoner who found his fortune in the locomotive industry desires Annabelle but he doesn't plan on ever marrying. However, he will do anything to get Annabelle. Unfortunately for Simon, Annabelle loathes him. Although she cannot deny her attraction, something about the arrogant Simon infuriates her.
This was a wonderfully written book and Annabelle and Simon were intriguing characters. The villan was sufficiently creepy and the action quick paced. Great start.
Secrets of a Summer Night.......2007-09-03
ISBN 0060091290 - Not following too many of the generic rules of romance novels has worked for Kleypas, making her one of the few romance authors I would read from again of my own choice.
Since her father died, Annabelle and her family have fallen on hard times, financially, when she discovers that her mother has taken a different fall of her own - assuming the role of mistress to a pig of a man to help pay the bills. Annabelle feels the pressure of the need to marry well, which will save her mother from Lord Hodgeham and keep her brother in school. Landing a man with a title and money isn't just an issue of snobbery, it's a must. Her upbringing has taught her that she should marry a peer and her families dire straits requires that he be wealthy enough to help them. Unfortunately, Annabelle doesn't have a dowry and without a dowry, she's just a pretty face, more likely to end up someone's mistress than the wife of a peer. After almost 4 seasons without an offer of marriage, Annabelle's on the verge of becoming a spinster.
Decidedly not the right man, Simon Hunt is the son of a butcher. He's wealthy, but in the low-class way of having worked for it. Worse, he likes to talk about work and making money. Some of the peerage invites him to places he really doesn't belong, throwing he and Annabelle in each other's way. She admits she finds him attractive, but she's got her mind set on marrying a certain sort of man. And she has a plan.
As the season began to draw to a close, Annabelle found herself sitting with 3 other girls. They'd sat together often, watching others dance, but never spoken. One night, however, that changes and the four girls make a pact to help each other find husbands. They've all got their own reasons for ending up wallflowers: Evie's family is wealthy but common and the Bowman sisters, Lillian and Daisy, are American and a bit too rough around the edges. They're only accepted at all into society because their father is very rich. The four become fast friends and the husband hunting begins with Annabelle's plight, since she is oldest.
The story of the girls' friendship is given more ink than the usual romance novel drivel, which is a huge plus. The girls are funny and real and I hope Kleypas realizes, through the next three books, that the romance isn't nearly as interesting as they are and keeps them centerstage. Simon and Annabelle don't follow the standard romance novel pattern too closely, either, with no other man/woman thrown between them and no major misunderstandings to muddy up the romance. That alone makes this one worthy of a quick read.
One Terrific Read!.......2007-08-24
This story was so beautiful. I love the entire wallflower series, I only wished I'd read them in order! Once again Kleypas has outdid herself.
Kind of bland.......2007-08-21
I'm glad I didn't read this book, the beginning of the Wallflower series, first otherwise, I might not have read the other three. This book is a very slow start to an otherwise entertaining series. It Happened One Autumn is good, The Devil in Winter is amazingly written and Scandal in Spring is extremely entertaining. However, as much as I didn't really enjoy Simon and Annabelle's story, I did enjoy reading about them in the following books. All in all, a good series and if you've read this one first and didn't care for it, don't let it stop you from reading the following books. They're much, much better.

If you are a dog lover, skip this one or borrow it.......2007-09-16
This is the first review I have ever written for a book, but I felt this was so different from what I was expecting that I wanted to write a review in order to save other people from making the same assumption I did about this book.
I love dogs, so I was expecting some great, inventive sci fi dog stories. These stories were unique, but the majority in this collection portray dogs in a negative light and I don't see dogs in a negative light and don't like reading stories that make them out to be terrifying creatures or stories that the dog just ends up being murdered in the end!
Many of the stories aren't really even about dogs as the main character. They're about humans and dogs make up a part of the story or are a supporting character or almost a side note.
The only 2 stories I can even say that I actually enjoyed out of the 16 total are Desertion by Clifford D. Simak and Friend's Best Man by Jonathan Carroll. Friend's Best Man had a kind of creepy ending, because the guy's dog ends up letting him know where he can go to be safe from the revolution the animals are planning against the human race.
Some of these stories were meant to be scary or at least thrilling, but the only one of the stories that was truly terrifying was a story called Do it for Mama! by Jerrold J. Mundis. This story was essentially about a nearly total prohibition of dogs in New York City, started by some radical anti-dog people who provide lawmakers with some figures showing how dangerous and unsanitary dogs are and end up with enough support to pass a law banning dogs in NYC. This was written in a way that was very realistic and actually, this is something you can almost envision happening in a world where we keep losing our civil liberties! Very scary reading!
The book is not completely bad, and there are even a few stories that are actually good, but I recommend borrowing this book, as the majority of the stories were simply a chore to read rather than being enjoyable as stories should be.
If you are a looking for a dog-oriented sci fi novel, check out the book Sirius: The Dog Star, edited by Martin H. Greenberg and Alexander Potter. This is a wonderful collection of dog stories that I read a few years ago and some of the stories still stand out in my mind as being some of the best short stories I've ever read. I never re-read books, but Sirius is one I am planning on re-reading--it's that good!
Dogtales - better left untold.......2006-07-28
I was very disappointed with this particular collection. If the theme wasn't pointedly negative it was not encouraging. Very little by way of positive pleasantness, which is what I read this stuff for. Very stark.

When Erin Tierney Kramp learned that she had a potentially fatal case of cancer, she was 32 years old and woefully unprepared for death. In Living with the End in Mind, Kramp and her coauthors chronicle her efforts to come to terms with her illness and suggest many practical steps people can take to prepare for their deaths. Kramp writes that taking care of all "the little 'what ifs' associated with the possibility of dying" decreased her stress level and allowed her to concentrate on the things that really mattered to her. Terminal illness forced the author to reevaluate her life and she hopes that this book will prompt her readers to do the same:
Five years ago, if anyone had asked me if I expected to live, I would have thought the question silly. Of course I expected to live, what was the alternative? Now I am well aware of the alternative. The question for all of us is, what are we doing between now and when we die?
This guide should be quite useful to a wide variety of people, even those who don't feel the least bit ill. The authors tackle this difficult subject in a matter-of-fact way, which makes it easier to take. Kramp urges her readers to organize their papers, mend their fences, buy a cemetery plot, and make the most of their time left on Earth. She includes tips on helping children deal with the loss of a parent, and discusses the importance of leaving a legacy of letters and pictures to comfort people after one's death. Living With the End in Mind is a handy reference guide to preparing emotionally, physically, and spiritually for death. --Jill Marquis
Book Description
Living with the End in Mind takes a life-affirming look at preparing yourself and your loved ones for the inevitable--whether you are in perfect health or are ill--so you can live life to its fullest. The inspiring couple who have coauthored this book have already garnered widespread media coverage, from 20/20 to The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Erin Kramp, who was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness four years ago, her husband, Doug, and their friend Emily McKhann have written a groundbreaking checklist that takes an uplifting and thought-provoking approach to addressing the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of mortality. They share practical advice on how to create a legacy for your loved ones with tapes, photo albums, journals, and letters; how to make funeral arrangements; how to talk about death with your children; how to incorporate prayer, meditation, and purpose into your life; and much more.

Where do you want to go? (1).......2007-08-31
By living with the end in mind, the authors have indeed provided us with a much-needed practical checklist for living one's current life to the fullest. Here we have the practical side of facing our mortality. We cannot expect any single book to cover the fullness of life, especially for those of us who want to consider what the afterlife may bring. So, by heeding the call to start the "final" journey, you will not only gain the sense of practical security that this book offers, but also continue the journey of living that leads to the possible embracing of more than one's mortality. For, as much as this book treats of what we need to face, other books and movies provide us with more information about what we want to face.
This book changed my life.......2001-05-24
As a father of a one year old I find my self thinking about the legacy that I would like to leave for her and the lessons that I would like to impart to her. This book provided inspiration and an easy to follow roadmap. After losing a mother to cancer and having a father living with cancer, I am well aware that we have no guarantees in life. I will refer back to this book often in the years to come and will share it with friends.
Inspirational message and invigorating writing style........1998-12-13

Absolutely astounding.......1998-10-20
I am 75 years old and, frankly, have been procrastinating for years about doing those things necessary to prepare my family for that time when I won't be here. The book, "Living with the End in Mind", is absolutely an inspiration to take that action. In addition to the point by point instructions, which are easy to follow, the book invokes in the reader a true spirit of awe concerning the trevail the writer, and husband, have undergone during this period of their lives. Their effort in publishing their story and guiding others in the handling of their preparatory duties is astounding. We all should take a lesson from their experience. They, truly, are to be commended for their support of the total community.

Not Half Bad.......2006-08-30
Quite useful for a quick check. Very useful for on line auctions to see if more investigation needed.
Great compact reference.......2006-06-05
This guide has everything in it that a collector of Lionel's postwar trains might desire - descriptions, values and best of all color PHOTOS! Though not as detailed as the Standard Catalog of Lionel trains upon which it is based, it non the less includes locomotives, freight cars, passenger cars, accessories, sets and catalogs - it even lists Lionel HO production.
Though format is a bit different, but can be slid into my pockets - though admittedly I would have prefered the book have fewer, but taller pages. However, the color photos of so many items - there are hundreds of them - give this volume a definate edge over any of the other guides I have used over the past 25 years.
This book definately rates as a "must-have" for the postwar Lionel collector.

Free Style embrodery stitches.......2003-02-02
This is one of the best "how to" embrodery books that I seen. The directions are very clear and the pictures are color coded. I would recommend this to anyone that really loves embrodery the way I do.
Excellent reference.......2002-06-29
I've been embroidering for years and this is a great reference book for both beginners and experienced stitchers. For the experienced, this small volume can be used when designing projects, and for beginners, each stitch comes with clear instructions. As a bonus, there are some patterns at the back. Great value for the price!
Excellent value for money.......2000-07-20
As a graduate of the certificate course at the Royal School of Needlework in Hampton Court, London, I find this book extremely helpful when designing projects. I use it as a reference booklet, and it is much cheaper than more expensive "encyclopedia" of stitches on the market. Instructions are clear for beginners; samples are clearly photographed; price is right. If you don't want to spend a lot of money learning embroidery, then buy the Anchor Book Series.

This book provides all the ins and outs of becoming an interior decorator - primarily starting your own business. There are a few brief sections on how to decorate, but the real value is in the very thorough information provided for getting into this field. It's an invaluable resource for those wanting to start their own decorating business.
Great for all the basics.......2005-02-02
This is great for anyone getting started in the decorating business. It's quick and easy reading, and briefly covers all the important concepts, such as styles, design elements, working with customers and shopping for products, and includes many references to websites and books for more detailed information you might want on a given subject. It touches briefly on a surprising amount of information, but shouldn't be used for in depth how-to advice on things such as floors, fabrics, window treatments, etc. This is great, though, if you're just getting started, as it gives you what you'll need without being long winded or confusing.
