I loved this book. Everyone of the books in this series made me laugh at times and cry at other times. I can't wait for the next one to become available.
The Potluck Club Takes the Cake ~ Reviewed.......2007-10-01
The church ladies live on, and if you liked the first two Potluck Club books, you'll love this one. I just know these ladies are members of my church, and if you look over your shoulder, you may see them in the pew behind you, too. The sometimes zany, sometimes crotchety, and sometimes out-of-control characters are always charming. Shepherd and Everson have delivered another fun-filled read with some unexpected results. Things I wanted to happen didn't, but it was okay. With surprises at each turn, this third book of the series does indeed Take the Cake! And the recipes are delicious, too.

I feel like a member of the club.......2007-10-01
This is the third book in the Potluck Club series, and I felt like I was visiting old friends, and catching up on the news. Each character is special, and I find I can hardly put the book down, waiting to see what is going to happen next. I primarily read mysteries, but a friend highly recommended The Potluck Club. This series has totally captivated me.
The Potluck Club Takes the Cake.......2007-08-16
Once again, the authors of the Potluck Club series have caused me to lose sleep. Once I started reading the latest shenanigans of the women of the Potluck Club, I couldn't put it down. It is a delightful book with vivid colorful characters that puts a smile on your face. The women of Summit View are the Mitford of Colorado.
Back for More.......2007-07-19
The girls are back in the third novel in the Potluck Club series. There's a wedding in the works in Summit View! But before anyone can say I do, the women seem to attract many adventures coming their way. Evie's worried about tying the knot while Goldie is trying to resist fixing her relationship. Vonnie's trying to get used to being a new mother while Lizzie's having all her family descend on her at once. Donna seems to have the whole world throw its problems at her feet while Lisa Leann just wants to make everyone know that she's there. These women are all connected through their friendship and being there for each other when they need it the most.
Another taste tempting pleaser! I really really love this series. I really like all the different POVs from the characters. You would read about an event from Evie's outlook and then change characters and find out that Donna didn't see things the same way. I really felt for Donna in this book. So much stuff happened to her that I wished she had more story time. She's my favorite character out of the group. Lisa Leann is still a touch character to like but she's gotten better as she's learned how to deal with the other women. Even Evie finds herself giving in to Lisa Leann's demands. The only character whose story I didn't find satisfying was Lizzie's. She has her whole family in her house including her mother who she doesn't get along with but nothing really comes out of it. I would have liked to read more about that relationship. I got a hoot out of Clay becoming transformed to impress Donna. I can't believed he even got a manicure. But the results were definitely worth it for him even though he didn't plan that specific outcome. Reading this book definitely puts you in a good mood. I've grown really attached to these characters and am wanting more! Once again there are tons of recipes for all the yummy dishes that are mentioned. So if get hungry while reading, put the book down and start cooking and you'll be able to eat your words.

An OK book.......2007-06-12
Friendship Cake is the story of five women who participate in a cookbook committee for their church. As the facilitator of the group had hoped, they get to know each other and become better friends in the process of creating the cookbook. This book was somewhat enjoyable to read, but ultimately the plot and characters were a bit thin. The characters are presented mainly in terms of problems or issues they are dealing with. Almost every chapter describes a new problem arising and a solution being reached. Each problem or issue is obviously something that the author had handpicked to represent an issue that today's churches are facing. The premise of exploring modern religious issues through fiction is a good one, but unfortunately this book was weakened instead of strengthened by its purpose. We don't get very much of a sense of the characters beyond the issues they represent, and as a result the book is less interesting than it would have been if the characters' personalities had been explored in more depth. The book has a lot going on; most of the characters encounter major life changes and have to make significant decisions during the course of the book. The resolutions to most of the issues the characters face seem a little too simple and easily reached to be realistic. Also, the moral lessons which are meant to be conveyed by the characters' situations are presented in a very obvious manner instead of being subtly worked into the plot. The plot probably would have worked better if the author had selected only a few of the issues and covered them in more depth. Still, the book did have a few real flashes of insight about the topics it addresses, and the subject matter of women's friendships made the book a pleasant light read.
National Bestseller??????????.......2007-03-03
I found this book to be boring, shallow and unbelievable which explains why it was a quick and easy read. That the crises these women faced were resolved in one chapter each was so unrealistic, I cannot believe this book landed a National Bestseller title and received decent reviews among readers. Very dissapointing.
Wholesome and Sweet.......2006-07-20
A lovely story that is simple and fun. If you would like a short tale that is heart warming and makes you understand the values that you hold throughout life in regards to friendship read this quaint story. Friendship Cake was a nice escape from the not so innocent books that we all read, just a real pleasent book.
Friendship Cake: A Novel.......2005-07-10
I read the book to use for our church bookclub. I enjoyed this short novel more than I thought I would. I would definitely recommend it for a all women bookclub!!
Oh my........2004-11-14
As I read the first quarter of Friendship Cake (for a bookclub) I thought it was prosaic and not very well conceived. I'm so glad that it was an 'assignment' and because of that, that I finished it.
The book touched on so many aspects of the angst women feel at any age but particularly as they move into late middle age and beyond. The subjects reflected in the story are timely and will always be current: bigotry, doubt of self and God, homosexuality, infidelity, love, self-righteousness, conflict, resolution, death, birth, interacial marriage and most of all, the bonds of friendship. All of these are wrapped into one slim volume; five hours of reading. I laughed, cried, and more importantly, took away a feeling of hope.
Read the whole thing...it is worth it.

Customer Reviews:
A Murder and Mayhem Bookclub review.......2007-10-08
Ah, the troubles of being queen. Betsy Taylor hasn't quite got her fangs around the idea of vampire diplomacy just yet, being new to the whole ruling class thing, but she's learning fast. Dying last year and turning thirty, two major stresses in any girl's book, kind of took Betsy's attentions for a long while. It however cannot be delayed any further and the European delegation of vampires is allowed to visit in order to pay their (insincere) respects to their new leader. It's hard to parlay with those that have been cool with the whole walking dead scene a lot longer than you, and Betsy never did have a lot of patience. Included in the European ranks is a vampire who took the life of one of her own people, and in doing so created a new vampire. What to do, what to do?
Clamping down on the urge to rip off a few ancient heads, Betsy calls upon her inner calm to get her through some new and tricky situations. And there wasn't a lot of inner calm there before she was dead, let alone now that she is. Trying very hard not to drink blood is making Betsy very tetchy, and it is near impossible to push that partiular discipline on a race of blood-drinkers. Throw in a squawling baby, a zombie in the roof and the annoyed lead-footheadness of her gorgeous vampire fiance - Betsy feels the walls closing well and truly in.
UNDEAD AND UNPOPULAR moves the vampire queen Betsy Taylor just a little bit further down the line to being married, and to being more like a reigning monarch over her people. This little read is very much a one room drama - the characters hardly leave the house and spend their time bumping into each other in the hallways to throw out some sass and then move on. As will be the wont with vampire novels, there isn't a lot further up in the predatory chain to a competant vampire so therefore there's no threats coming from above. The warring factions approach has been attempted here but it is all so haphazard and casually done that you would feel a greater sense of tension from not remembering where you last saw your bookmark.
This series had an explosive start, and suffers now from the problem of what to do with Betsy. The marriage card can only be dragged out so long, and it's hard to feel much for two people who drink blood from each other anyway. This book is more of a quick character catch-up for the regular readers with a barely-there plot which would do little to draw in a new readership.
Series comes back stronger........2007-09-21
MaryJanice Davidson, Undead and Unpopular (Berkley, 2006)
Undead and Unpopular gets the Queen Betsy series back on its feet in a grand way; it's the first adult non-graphic novel I've read in a single day in months. What's really impressive is that, like Undead and Unreturnable before it, this is another novel that focuses more on Betsy's personal life (and that of her housemates), but it's got a much better command of pace and captures the attention a great deal better than that one did. Davidson hooks us with the first sentence (George telling Betsy there's a zombie in the attic), and then proceeds to come back and play with that hook a few times during the ensuing madness, which includes a delegation from Europe, a friend who wants to turn her boyfriend into a vampire, the impending publication of Jon's tell-all book (which is, of course, called Undead and Unwed), and major complications with Jessica. Two hundred pages later, we finally get around to the zombie (which Betsy, being who she is, mistakes for a surprise birthday party). Unlike the serial killer storyline in the last book, which seemed like it was there solely to pacify readers who weren't fond of the series' soap-opera aspect, this one works. I'm not sure what she did differently, but whatever it was, it worked.
A previously fine series has gotten fine again. *** ½
Betsy Series.......2007-09-14
I read the whole series and can't wait to read the next book. I liked it so much I started reading her Fred mermaid series. She is hilarious! Some of their conversations sounds like something out of my own journal not that I am a vampire or would want to be. I caught myself laughing out loud.
If you like Betsy try FRED! I liked them so much I am buying the books for my home library so I can read them again and again.
Undead and Unpopular.......2007-09-04
Here's Betsy at her Best again, taking us through her adventures in her
designer heels, of course, with all her glory! I can hardly wait until the next book!
Funny and original.......2007-08-26
I came across the Queen Betsy series by chance and decided to give them a try. To say the least, I'm hooked! My daughter and I have read all the books in the series and found them to be very funny with original characters and stories. We can't wait for the next installment!

Pretty good... Pretty good indeed..........2003-08-07
Over all I think it was pretty good. They kind of spent the whole book wasting they're time in some sort of spell but that's pretty easy to overlook since It makes a decent amount of sense. The only thing I was dissapointed with is while they where in the future I was hoping they would meet older versions of some of the X-men that didn't get stuck in the trap like Pyslocke or Havok or Longshot or someone. One thing that in my opinion could have made the book better is if Gambit was in it. I know this review isn't very informative but that's cause I'm tired and I don't want to give to much of this book away.
Overall it was a very good sequel, The stakes where definetely raised/

Good for starting out.......2005-12-23
I've been attending yoga classes for about a month. I've recently started a daily practice with the help of this book. I Borrowed flows from my class and clarifed any unsure pose with the help of the pictures in this book. It has also allowed me to put names with poses, so I can ask for assistance from my teacher. I checked this one out of the library, but am probably going to buy it. I would consider it good for someone who knows little or nothing about yoga or wants to make adjustments to their practice.
Teach Yourself Visually--Yoga.......2005-01-06
I'm very happy with the format of this book. Since I am new to yoga I found the various positions were clearly explained and the pictures helped tremendously. I took this book to my Yoga class. My teacher was so impressed she asked for the name of the book so she could add it to her collection.
Outstanding.......2004-08-14
This book is excellent! The pictures clearly show each pose and the narrative includes modifications and problem areas. I highly recommend it to both beginners and teachers. I took it to class and my teacher was anxious to get her own copy.
Beautiful, informative book.......2003-10-21
I have bought a few books on yoga, and this one is by far the best. Not only is the book beautiful to look at, the instructions are clear, concise and very informative. I have been taking yoga classes for almost 3 years & this book showed me tips and suggestions that my instructor never told me about! A wonderful resource that I will keep handy by my yoga mat. I highly recommend this book.

The spiral binding makes for easy use. Generous margins allow for notes and comments. The introduction offers wonderful guidelines, including how much to make, based on number of guests and time of day; and a proper mix of food types.

Book Description
Emmy award-winning author Christopher Lowell is back with his second groundbreaking book, ready to inspire his millions of fans with hundreds of ideas that can transform their homes—and their lives. With his first book,
Christopher Lowell’s Seven Layers of Design, Lowell introduced design basics layer by layer, demystifying and reassuring the first-time home decorator. Now he takes the process one step further, encouraging readers to discover their own hearts’ desires so they can turn their dreams into unique realities.
Taking us by the hand, Lowell starts with his own experiences of self-discovery as a guide for the dreaming process. Next he provides a questionnaire that helps you identify your own sources of pleasure and fulfillment. Finally, he illustrates the process with exciting design projects built on particular themes. The longing to entertain friends in a cozy cocktail room transforms an awkward space into a “Martini Lounge”; dreams of living
by the seashore become “Coastal Living”; the desire for travel and theatrical surroundings informs “Moroccan Mystique”; and a nostalgia for the mid-twentieth century finds its creative expression in “Retro Chic.” Each of these imaginative rooms not only expresses the creative spirit, but also feeds the soul.
As Lowell explains it, no matter what your budget, no matter what your talents, if you begin to understand the relationship between the interior of your mind and the interior of your home, you can create beauty in both. The sense of satisfaction promised by a home that you yourself decorated is not beyond your reach or your budget, if you follow the simple steps of America’s favorite design guru.
Customer Reviews:
Not really my dream rooms.......2007-04-27
I've seen his show a few times and really like how he envisions things and carries them out. This book is about the same thing, only with more description and instructions - plus you get to see how he did his bedroom. I liked the fact that he has you take a "personality-type quiz" and take those elements into your decorating. But if you're not a creative person, it may be harder to make the transition.
Though I admire his ability to transform rooms, none of them were really my "style." Lots of great ideas, but this book just wasn't for me. My house is just your normal 70's style split level so any of these ideas would take a lot of imagination and a bit of money. This book would be better for someone who has a larger home with character. Also, this book is filled with posed pics of Christopher - can be annoying if you're not a huge fan.
If not familiar with his shows, his books are virtually useless...........2005-08-23
Don't get me wrong, I love his shows, although I think his rooms are somewhat overfilled with stuff. His built-ins and projects are great!
However, unless you've taped his shows, the instructions for the few projects he did include (l really would have liked the instructions for the desk in the kid's race car room but it wasn't there--looked very "Jetsons") leave a LOT to be desired. And instead of nice pictures of the entire room and full furniture layouts, you got a lot of his drawings over the color pictures.
So, bottom line, you cannot just pick up this book and hope to do this stuff without watching the particular episodes he's referring to.
I hope future books are written to correct this problem (present in all the books except his entertaining book), and also that he puts out a book with ALL of the projects he builds in it, with good instructions and lots of pictures.
Tap Into Your Inner Decorator.......2005-05-07
This was my first encounter with Christopher Lowell and his energetic decorating. I'd recommend starting with his Seven Layers of Decorating book first. If You Can Dream It builds on that earlier book.
This is not just a collection of pretty room photos. It really makes you think about how decorating relates to your inner feelings and dreams. He gives the reader a great tool in the Dream Questionnaire, then explains how your answers can be applied to home decorating.
His own questionnaire reveals his love for things tropical/water/organic/bamboo, etc. That explains the dramatic rooms pictured in the book which may be overly theatrical for some people. The martini lounge and the retro room put me off, but I fell in love with his down-by-the-sea bedroom and some of the others.
Sandwiched in are projects (usually 2 pages each). These include making a circular pouf, a saucer fountain, a bookshelf room divider, an ottoman, modular bookshelves, a nautical bedside table, deco sconces, a bed/storage combo, refacing kitchen cabinets, and finally a car bed for a kid's room.
Well, worth a look.
Loved It!.......2004-12-31
I love this book! Christopher's rooms are always excellent (even those featuring my not-so-favorite color schemes). But, no matter which color he chooses, I always find several things I like about each room - which is more than I can say for most books of this type! This particular book is a must have for anyone who likes zen, moroccan, or coastal/nautical designs. There is more, of course, but those are my favorites.
Too much like his first book.......2004-09-10
As much as I hate to say it and as much as I like Christopher, this book had me falling asleep. Literally. It was so much like his first book, and alot of things sounded the same. Alot of the pictures looked familiar also. But regardless...I STILL LOVE CHRISTOPHER, and everything that he represents! He is awesome!

Customer Reviews:
Mediocre at Best.......2007-02-26
This book consists of mostly fluff such as a outdated graphic design glossary, and not nearly enough information about actually selling. The worst part is that the author refers to the internet as cyberspace. :(
Deceiving title.........2003-06-09
I bought this book while thinking it had methods and techniques for freelancers to promote their work.
It turned out to be addressed at people whose job is "sales" at larger design firms. In other words, this is a book for salespeople, not a book for designers.
It has some useful techniques inside, but it's certainly not the stuff designers would like to do (like cold calling).
Keys to Success.......2003-02-07
The business of graphic design has changed drastically in the last few years and many of us feel we are looking at a locked door without any keys. Don Sparkman's 2nd edition takes a practical and step-by-step approach to giving you those keys to selling your design services. Whether you have been in business two minutes or twenty years, you need the current protocols for getting clients to hire you because the old ones don't work anymore! Pay attention to turning cold calls into warm calls in Chapter 3, "other elements" in Chapter 8 and every word of Chapter 11.
Good Book on Basics.......2003-02-07
A good foundation to build on!
I manage a full-service printing facility catering to both the design community and surrounding tech industries. I read this book afer a local designer passed it on to me. I have encouraged my sales staff to read it and use the strategies found in the book that are common to all visual communication companies. The book is filled with common sense rules that can make a difference in success or failure.
An easy read and very informative.......2003-02-06
Don Sparkman's book, Selling Graphic Design is a quick read, very informative and easy to understand. While much of the information is aimed at the begining designer as well as the non-designer sales rep, there are plenty of fresh ideas for even an old-timer like myself. I liked the conversational tone of the book. Sparkman doesn't preach, he informs. Based on his years of experience, he lays out information in a straight forward manner that can be turned into successful sales strategies by anyone.
