Book Description
The white-knuckle pace of a bicycle race drives this novel about a young American's opportunity to compete in the Tour de France. Complex relationships with teammates, personal and professional obstacles, and a terrible disaster cause the young cyclist to redefine his limits. An insider's perspective on the world of professional bicycle racing reveals that the required tactics and skills create a culture in which pain is the ultimate currency and endurance is the most powerful force. The intense pressure the competitors experience offers an instructive look at personal formation beyond the sports world.

thumbs down.......2007-10-06
This book had every stereotype possible in its pages: the diabolical team director, the wise team veteran who takes him under his wing in spite of being responsible for killing his brother, the beautiful girlfriend who is the niece of the diabolical team director, the troubled relationship with his father, overcoming the odds after a childhood bike crash, the French fans who boo his every move (remember he killed the wise veteran's brother), the incredible adoration of the French fans he wins over after wining a single stage at the Tour de France, the heroic gesture on the winner's podium, the evil nemesis who sneers at every move, ......
if that wasn't bad enough, the author's descriptions of scenes were overly dramatic -- "flaming flowers that brightly blaze" sorta stuff. and even worse, the book flashes back constantly from the Tour stage to childhood memories. i got so sick of the sugary scenes from the hero's checkered past that i started skipping the to get to the end quicker.
this felt like a high school senior wrote this book. Skip this one folks.
Excellent quick read.......2007-10-03
Nice flow that always keeps you in the action and provides the background story at the same time.
It was a fast read.......2007-07-26
It had all the weaknesses pointed out by other reviewers, but I have to admit that I sat in the one-stall reading library so long that my legs went to sleep hooked on reading several chapters. It's a long way from great literature, but it does paint an interesting picture of the inside of the peloton. It ain't War and Peace, but that's a good thing. My legs weren't the only things that went to sleep trying to read that.
captivating.......2007-07-24
This is the first year I've closely followed the Tour de France and this book enhanced the experience greatly (although the Vino incident has left a sour taste). Dave Shields manages to put into words every emotion felt by a cyclist - the pain, the joy, the tactics. One of the reviewers on the back cover says that Dave Shields owes him a night of sleep. I'd like to add to the list of people owed the same!
Not bad at all.......2007-04-17
This isn't the best writing around, but it isn't bad. But if you like cycling, it's good enough that you won't put it down. If you want great writing, get "The Rider by Tim Krabbe. But if you're like me, you'll want both.

Bordering on Erotic at Times.......2007-04-12
This is the second book in the Royal Four Series and is the story of the Lion. Lord Dane Calwell is very serious about his duty to the crown...his father was a traitor who fell in love with a French spy and betrayed secrets out of that love. Dane knows he has to marry he has a duty to produce an heir and chooses Olivia because she seems to be of sturdy stock, he will never be able to love because it will interfere with his duties. It seems Dane has an unusual problem (he is unnaturally large Victoria refers to him as a blond Viking) and needs a wife who will be able to withstand his attentions and produce an heir.
Olivia knows her family is desperate to make a good match for her because of their financial problems...it was thought that her brother Walter would save the family by marrying an heiress but he drowned a month before. Olivia's mother never worried about a match for her because she spent all her attention on Walter. Out of desperation Olivia's mother pushes her into the Thames so that Lord Dane will jump in and rescue her. Olivia, a strong swimmer, ends up having to rescue Lord Dane who is stuck in the mud after jumping in to save her. A few days later, she is shocked to learn she has been bethrothed to him by her father. Dane makes no attempt to woo her and barely even sees her until the night of her wedding. Dane comes in on their wedding night and does delicious things to Olivia without actually consummating their marriage. Olivia is confused and turns to a local courtesan to help her with her marital woes, what happens later is hilarious but some scenes border on erotica. Not only is Olivia confused about their personal relationship, she is curious about the secret "business" dealings her husband is always having. It seems that he is always meeting with the same few men but Dane keeps putting her off when she asks questions. Before long, it seems that devious things are underfoot and someone is out to undermine Olivia. Dane struggles against his growing feelings for Olivia, when things go bad, he forces himself to put duty first and almost destroys the one woman who ever meant anything to him.
I love Celeste Bradley's characters. They are always intense, with depth, humor and not at all your typical regency characters. Can't wait for the third book.
What was that?!.......2006-10-29
Celeste Bradley, the writer who has potential but never seems to grasp the romance genre, offers us a rather dismal, nonsensical tale absolutely nothing like the back cover blurb suggests.
This is the story of a heroine whose parents throw her at the hero in the setup for a contrived hasty marriage. A hero who needs an heir but is too large in the anatomy to consummate any relationship. A romance that relies on the eager heroine's lust and hero's desire to play Dominatrix, with some absurd sex toys, to substitute for love scenes and sexual tension. A character story that makes both leads less appealing as the story goes on for arbitrary reasons. (Makes you wonder if Celeste Bradley grew to hate her characters as she was forced to write.) And finally a spy story that made absolutely no sense except as an arbitrary means to inflict a sexual setup or bodily harm on its victims.
For example, Dane stumbles across his wife shot in the woods by the villain she tried to chase. (After having assumed she left and leaving her to fend for herself for a day and a half despite everyone telling him he should search for her.) He takes her home in concern but still believes she was in league with the man... who left her for dead! Only so his supicion sends her away and she's again captured and threatened with death in another gruesome way.
I'm also not convinced any of the sex "training" scenes can qualify as anything but a woman's porn. This seems to be a frequent problem of Bradley's. She can write humor and usually has a fair grasp of intrigue but she has little clue how to write romance. One never feels the characters feel anything more besides lust for each other.
A interesting twist.......2006-10-05
Surrender to a Wicked Spy by Celeste Bradley is the second book in the Royal Four Series which takes characters from her earlier series the Liar's Club. I am reading both of the series out of order so that is interesting. This novel tells the story of Dane (one of the Royal Four) who must marry someone who he would never love - so he picks Olivia. For most of the novel Olivia is trying to understand Dane while he tries to ignore Olivia. The second half is pure adventure and mystery. The Royal Four Series To Wed A Scandalous Spy (1), Surrender to a Wicked Spy (2),
One Night With A Spy (3) and Seducing The Spy.
Celeste Bradley gets worse.......2006-10-04
The highly likeable Liar's Club books introduced me to Celeste Bradley, and I've kept on reading her work. But another book like this is going to convince me to stop. I think Ms. Bradley should not have taken up a "Royal Four" series--she doesn't have the seriousness or depth to write a plot about four highly powerful peers as the ultimate defenders of England. What's Dane Caldwell's vital national role? Muffling a scheme to acquire a mistress for the Regent? That's the most important thing Bradley could come up with? I like Bradley's comic voice and think she ought to stick with lighter plots that suit it.
Skipping past the implausibility of the Royal Four device, I still think this book is not one of her best. The sensible and irrepressible Olivia is fun to read about, but frankly, I thought Dane was clueless, arrogant, secretive, insensitive, and occasionally hostile--not my idea of a great hero.
If you're looking for a book with a lot of intimate scenes, however, this might be a good pick for you. Olivia and Dane's growing marital relations were really the core of the book.
Good, with the appearance of Willa..........2006-08-10
I just assumed this book would be good because I count on Ms Bradley to write page turners. I wasn't disappointed. Although Dane should have been a little kinder. Not only did he treat Olivia poorly, he wasn't exactly nice to Willa, Lady Reardon, either. She was great, a welcome addition to the story. I respected her for not telling Nathaniel about her 'argument' with Dane, it was so like her character. Olivia and Willa became instant friends, but Dane never liked Willa, 'Reardon's little tyrant' is what he called her. But there was a pattern, at times Olivia disliked Dane, Willa TOLD him she disliked him, and the maids disliked him. I wish he were a better hero.

This is a Diadem Book!.......2005-03-05
Okay, so I read this out of order in the series! I got it from my Dad for Christmas last year with a bunch of other great Sci-fi/fantasy books.
I was unprepared for the depth and complexity of the story. Having no experience with Jo Clayton (major oversight in my reading history), I had no idea what I had. Great story. Stands alone well, but I want more Diadem info! Not sure where in the series this is, but I BELIEVE it may be as early as book two. Just a guess....
I liked it. Nuff said.

Interesting.......2007-09-10
Always looking for a book to justify my love of vinegar, I found this book fascinating. Despite the fact they may be promoting their own apple cider vinegar brand, it truly is the best one out there. Anyone reading this will rush out to buy their own bottle, I promise!
Good Advice.......2007-06-05
The book is full of sound advice. Using many of the concepts mentioned. Worth the purchase price.

Here's to your health.......2007-05-13
My father in law SWEARS by the health benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar. I bought this book as a gift for him and he absolutely LOVES it.
Very simple.......2006-10-01
I honestly don't think there was a need to write a book for other than the fact that you cant sell a 1 page book. To summarzize this book for you, drink 2 heaping teaspoons of raw honey, 2 teaspoons of RAW apple cider vinegar only the kind from healthstores that has the live enzymes and a glass of water mix it together and sip it. Drink 3 of these a day for the rest of your life. That is the book in a nutshell. The rest of the book they try to encorporate bragg lifestyle principles as well as other uses for vinegar like clenaing the stove etc. I wish someone had summed it up for me.

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat disappointing.......2007-03-11
I recently purchased this cookbook after reading the good reviews here. Some of the recipes I tried did not turn out as well as I liked. The Middle Eastern Salad, for instance, seemed to contain far too much bulgur considering the amount of other ingredients. It also did not specify which type of bulgur (there are several varieties, so this could be an important piece of information). There are other such oddities throughout the book.
There are positive aspects of this book, however. There are recipes suitable for a variety of occasions (pot luck, fellowship meals, dinner at home, picnics). Most can be prepared quickly with ingredients that are commonly found in most supermarkets.
Scrumptious.......2006-11-10
Well presented, unique cookbook that provides a wealth of new ideas for
healthy but mouth-watering full menus for everyday and special meals. Well organized,
creative and yummy.
Great, easy to follow recipes.......2006-06-14
I have all of Dot Vartan's cookbooks, including Mad About Muffins and Is it Soup Yet and like those books, this book has great, easy to make (and follow) recipes. I especially like the meal planner; this way I don't have to think too much! I highly recommend this book.
Wonderful, versatile cook book........2006-05-17
Dot Vartan's latest cookbook, "Delicious Salad Meals," is a must for any cook who needs ideas for light, delicous meals that are not complicated to prepare. What I like most about the book is the organization, which divides the salad/meal recipes by type, e.g., poultry, meat, seafood, etc., and then once you choose a recipe, side dishes are given that complement to complete a meal. The recipes are delicious, easy to follow, well written, and include ingredients that are not hard to find at the grocery store. A fine resource for weekday meals for those who want to put together a healthy meal for the family after a day at work. The book provides great ideas for party salads, too! And I've given many copies away as hostess gifts. A versatile, affordable cook book that I recommend highly.
Fun, delicious salads.......2006-04-09
I love the way the book is organized into 5 chapters. Each recipe is easy to read and in almost every case, I already have all of the ingredients on hand. It's also nice having the recipes for bread, muffin and dessert accompaniment right there on the next page.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed in Coltland.......2007-03-21
A big disappointment. I own nearly all of R.L. Wilson's books, and bought this out of love for such things. Nowhere NEAR the quality of other books in my collection, it was a big, big disappointment. Not only are the photos not up to par, but the text is horrid. Doc O'Meara apparently writes to make a quick buck -- not for the love of the subject like Wilson.
Not Very Educational.......2007-03-17
If you like to look at pictures of very pretty Colt SAA's that are way too expensive for the average person to acquire, then by all means read this book--or perhaps I should say "look" at this book. There's not much to read. The author only skims the surface of what I would consider a very in-depth subject regarding the history of Colt Firearms and the "Peacemaker". The rest of the book's pages are filled with full-color photographs that really don't make for a captivating experience. The experience of this book was like having a good friend show you pictures of his/her vacation; the first few photos are interesting, but after awhile it becomes more of the same and interest is rapidly lost.
If you're looking for a very good in-depth history of Colt Firearms I would recommend "Colt: An American Legend" by R.L. Wilson. For a good historical reference on the Single Action Army specifically, I would check out C. Kenneth Moore's "Study of the Colt Single Action Army", although it is out of print and very expensive to buy. A well-stocked library should have it.
A fine reference for the Peacemaker enthusiast.......2003-12-03
This pictures alone make this book worthwhile. Very nice color plates with excellent detail. O'Meara doesn't stop with the pictures though. He gives the reader a very well researched history of the Colt company and the development of the Single Action Army.
Since the book deals with classic Peacemakers, O'meara educated himself on the art of gun engraving and discusses it in a way that will hold the reader's interest.
Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Ok.......2007-03-20
I purchased this book based on the other reviews. While there are a couple of patterns of interest in this book, I would not make the majority of them. Also, I didn't like that the yarn for the patterns is referred to by weight alone, and not by the actual brand used. I find that this makes it difficult to get an accurate gauge. I'm not a big fan of novelty yarns and there seem to be quite a few patterns that use them in this book.
I love this book!.......2005-11-01
Carolyn Christmas comes up with the neatest patterns. This book is a little one but packed with lots of great patterns. I have to admit, the baby hat on the cover is my favorite pattern, but there are plenty of tempting patterns in this book.
Great book, great designer - definitely worth getting
Has a wide variety.......2005-08-11
Although the physical size of Carolyn Christmas'(don't you just love her name?)book is small, the content is large, easy beginner items as well as something for the more experienced. What I especially liked was that there were T-shirt tops that even a novice could do, but the expert would be satisfied as well.
A good addition to any crochet library.

Informercial for kit sunrooms........2007-03-15
This book features the sunrooms that belong in America's suburbs. Nearly the entire book shows the same sunroom 'kit' over and over again with a slightly different trim package to change styles.
Pros: This is great for you if you have a conventional home and want a small, attractive, sunroom in kit form.
Cons: Book is bound poorly. First one in such poor condition "new" that I returned to amazon. Book is limited to very basic set of styles with little deviation.

If you are an aspiring designer, it doesn't matter if you want it... you NEED it........2007-08-05
I was actually looking for a book to help me with my portfolio development... though it doesn't cover rendering techniques (it doesn't claim to) this book actually gives you such a clear idea of the entire design process, there are hardly any doubts left in your head after that. and it's so well written... oh and the pictures! they are just fantastic. This book is the second in the design secrets - products series... so it is very up to date and covers very recent products. I recommend this to anyone, not just aspiring designers, if products in general interest you. you'll never look at anything you buy the same way! it's just a brilliant book. and as for anyone looking to pursue design, you NEED it. if its too expensive for you, at least get a used copy!
Great resource!.......2005-09-10
I recently purchased this book for one of my design drawing classes. The teacher had specifically asked us to find examples of product design sketches. After looking everywhere for books on the subject this one turned out to be the most up-to-date in terms of techniques and the most complete. I also think it's a great reference book and gives a good overview of the product design process. I recently purchased this book for one of my design drawing classes.
