As long as the people of Pern could remember, the Holds had protected them from Thread, the deadly silver strands that fell from the sky and ravaged the land. In exchange for sanctuary in the huge stone fortresses, the people tithed to their Lord Holders, who in turn supported the Weyrs, whose dragons were Pern's greatest weapon against Thread.
But not everyone on Pern was part of that system of mutual care and protection, particularly those who had been rendered holdless as punishment for wrongdoing. And there were some, like Jayge's trader clan, who simply preferred the freedom of the roads to the security of a hold. Others, like Aramina's family, had lost their holds through injustice and cruelty. For all the holdless, life was a constant struggle for survival.
Then, from the ranks of the criminals and the disaffected, rose a band of renegades, led by the Lady Thella. No one was safe from Thella's depredations, and now her quarry was Aramina, reputed to have a telepathic link with dragons. The Pern series of books from Anne McCaffery are great. Better if you read them in order, (look online at her website for recommendations). This is futuristic science fiction, but if you liked Aregon, you would probably like this series too

I was somewhat dissapointed by this book. This is the 2nd one in the Pern Series I read, I had just finished all the Wyers of Pern before. I really enjoyed the large role the dragons got to play in Wyers of Pern, this book lacks it. You don't really get to see into the telepathic relationship the riders have with their dragons. It's exciting, but I really miss the dragons. The wyers are put into a bad light early on, and I was confused about the Leadership of Benden Wyer, when did F'lar and Lessa take over? The book is okay, but she's done better.

I recomend this book if you are reading the entire Pern series in chronological order. Renegades will seem choppy if you read it alone and most of the secnes will not make sense if read before the other books. Renegades fills in a lot of time gaps that reading the others leave out. I recomend this book to all Pern fans.
Pern readers, don't miss this one!.......2004-05-11
When I first read this book, years ago, I remember being a little disappointed. It wasn't as good as the Dragonflight trilogy or even as good as the Harper Hall trilogy. I'm re-reading the series in chronological order now, and I want to warn people not to listen to the negative reviews!
Yes, it's maybe not quite as enjoyable, it tells stories of the less-pleasant sides of Pern life, but it also tells things that you must hear if you want the whole story. You must read Renegades in order to be properly set up for All the Weyrs of Pern. This is the book that, if nothing else, tells more about the initial excavation of Landing and the discovery of AIVAS, and it introduces Jayge and Aramina of the Paradise River Hold from Dolphins of Pern.
I enjoyed this book more on second reading than I did the first time. The Pern series is five stars. If you enjoy the series, don't skip this four star book based on negative reviews.

These two stories featuring Devin with Cassie and Shane with Rebecca, are my two personal favorites of the series. They are well written and have a well drawn out story line and characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the character development with the other MacKades and what has been happening to them in the meantime.
Ever since I was first introduced to Cassie in Rafe's story, I had wanted to read her story. I was not disappointed in the least, for it far surpassed my expectations, since the first two stories were rather average yet still good. Devin is by far my favorite MacKade, I think every woman wants a man like him. And Cassie was a charmingly lovely heroine for Devin. Just perfect together. 5/5 stars
Shane...well there's not another one like him. When I first started to read about the MacKades, I wasn't that interested in him, but as the series continued, I got more and more intrigued. Rebecca is delightful as the woman that finally reels the wild Shane in. The interactions between these two are interesting to say the least. 5/5 stars
I'd say to read them in order, as to get to know everyone from the beginning and the history. The ghost element in all four stories is interesting how she integrates it with the characters and their emotions and experiences. I'd like to see sequels featuring an adult Connor, Bryan, and maybe Emma. Don't miss these brothers and their loves, once you read about them, you'll never forget 'em!

A Pleasing read.......2006-10-29
This was a reread for me and I really liked it.
This is the last two stories of the four MacKade brothers. Local bad boys as teens, these siblings turned out to be great men.
In the Heart of Devin MacKade, Devin is now the local sherriff. For years he has been in love with Cassie. A mother of two that he was forced to watch be abused by her husband. Her husband is now in jail and Cassie has been divorced from him for some time now. He is now trying to get her to look beyond their long standing friendship. A lovely tale of true love with some suspenseful twist and turns.
In the Fall of Shane MacKade you have the baby brother. He is the local heart throb who see's it as his duty to love all the ladies. He is also the son who took over the family farm, the sight of some ghost hauntings. Rebecca is a friend of Regan (The return of Rafe)who comes to town to look into all the paranormal activity. She was a child prodigy and has a ton of degrees. Completely the opposite of a woman Shane should want. It's fun to watch the fall of Shane.
Like in the previous two stories, you have some ghost stories mixed in with these two. An entertaining read.

This two stories are romantic and do hold your interest, but I would caracterize them as "very light reads". And since they are very brief stories, the romance unfolds almost too fast. There is not really enough of a build up. Clearly one of Nora Roberts early efforts, but nonetheless, worthwhile.

I am surprised to find that this book is out of print - I found The Mountain Made of Light to be a very entertaining and worthwhile read. The story concerns Jesse O'Keefe, a young anthropologist who discovers a "lost" indigenous civilization living in the Andes mountains. The plot is fantastically crafted, the writing has a very Indiana-Jonesish quality, and the characters and culture are likable, if not entirely believable. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a decent treasure-hunt adventure!

I bought this for my 4 year old who had(has) a hard time controlling his anger. This was a great story for him to understand that he wasn't alone. It also gave great tools for him to use to help him control his temper. There are clear guidelines in the back of the book to help any parent create a system that might work for their house. My son is doing much better with using his words and asking for help.

To me this book on the Art of Garde Manger is important because it presents the classic method and is very detailed. Once I know the classic method, I can branch out if I want, depending on my ability to be creative.
I am not yet a professional chef but have trained at CIA and I feel that I can adapt to whatever nouveau or nouvelle comes down the road. But I have to know the basics first. This book gives me those basics. It is valuable because I can refer to it anytime I need to learn or review.

This Culinary Institute publication is a classic for professionals, serious hobbyists and chef wannabees who want or need complete knowledge of garde manger skills.
The Fifth Edition pleased me particularly, as it moves toward healthier nutrition and includes vegetarian offerings. I value it for complete technical data - it is a valuable reference work covering kitchen planning, equipment, food safety, food preparation techniques, and instruction. In addition, it contains a wealth of recipes. Numerous black and white photographs and drawings illustrate techniques and there is a section of excellent color photographs of artistic tray and individual plate presentations.
(Perhaps the man whose review "disses" this book was having a bad day - year? - life? - and needed to take it out on something?)
I consider the Art of Garde Manger an excellent basic for any serious cook's research, instruction and library.
Dissapointing.......2002-06-06
Just by looking at the cover page and the other reviewer comments, I thought I was buying a great book.
The book has very few pictures and these pictures not always represent items you will find in the book. For instance, there is a full-page photograph of a terrific morel terrine, whose recipe is missing in the book!.
The book is a collection of recipes rather than an instruction book on decoration, menu layouts, buffet planifications, etc, although these issues are shortly covered.
To be honest, I find the book out of date. Cold food goes well beyond what this book offers. Too much gelatine and liver. A much better book is "Garde Manger : The Art and Craft of the Cold Kitchen" which I highly recommend.

This book is a complete professional's guide to understanding and putting into practice the art of garde manger. This was my textbook in culinary school for garde manger class, and it covers all the essentials from sausage making, cold salads, and hot hors d'oeuvres to platter design, edible and nonedible garnishes and decorations, and classical buffet presentations. It may not be suitable for the casual cook, but as a professional guide to the garde manger, it is very thorough.

Very Informative Book on Wade Miniatures.......2007-09-22
The book 'Wade Miniatures' (2007) by Diane Baker is a wonderful first book to have if you are starting to collect Wade Miniature Figurines. The color photos are so true to life. Ms Baker includes some history of Wade of England and a current price guide for the figurines.
Most of the figurines included in the book start in the 1950's and continue up to the present. The Wade factory in England however, started out making porcelain pieces in 1810.
Everyone remembers the Red Rose Tea Miniatures that were included in the Red Rose Tea boxes. Those little Miniatures currently range in value from $5.00 to about $20.00 - $30.00. More exquisite pieces can range in value from $50.00 to over $400.00. There is a price range for every level of collector.
I had an older copy of her book from the Library. However, when the 2007 edition came out, I just had to have it as a handy reference guide.
As a novice collector, or for that matter, as an amateur collector, you will find this book to be an invaluable reference guide!

I read the reviews for this book and checked it out at my local library. Personally, I found there to be some great patterns in it, and I am now putting it on my wish list for future purchase. It is true that there aren't many boy patterns in it, but that is hard to find anywhere. The patterns in this book are very cute and I can't wait to try them out!

This book includes sweaters that *look* like you made them. Almost every pattern has sleeves that are very visably attached to the blocky body of a sweater. The designs are outdated and the finished products don't even look that great in the book.
Good for BOTH sexes........2005-07-22
Two or three boy patterns? Nonsense. There may be only four patterns with obviously male models, but many of the baby patterns are on models of indeterminate gender, and if you add in patterns that are either obviously unisex or could be made so with an altered color scheme, there are about an even dozen that can be boys' clothes. Twelve out of 22 might not sound like a lot, but crochet patterns tend to be skewed towards females to begin with. Many of the patterns are quite unique, in a sweet-old-fashioned sort of way (who can't love a crocheted coonskin cap?). The only complaint I have is that some of the patterns are needlessly complicated. There's a lovely dress, for instance, that calls for a D hook & has you making the sleeves separately and then sewing them on. Using the included schematics, I was able to make a lookalike dress with a G hook and crocheted-in-place sleeves. Overall, though, it is very worth the price if you're looking for something different. And don't let the title fool you, there is much more to the book than just sweaters.

This should be really called Crochet for Girls, although the patterns for the girls are really cute I thought there would be more boy patterns, there are only few in this book.

This book is worth reading. I didn't feel like the whole book applied to me at this very time (because the way it is broken down into relationship stages), but it did give good advice as a whole. It should be a supplementary reading if you are looking to Feng Shui your home. The author also provides other references which is nice.

The book is divided into three sections: Mistakes (where something has gone wrong, such as a printer error); Chance (where chance occurrences or found objects are incorporated into a piece of work); and System (where a system is created to actively encourage unpredictability). It ends with a series of interviews with five leading figures: Ian Anderson, Stefan Sagmeister, Paul Elliman, Stuart Bailey and April Greiman.

Cool Perspective........2006-03-14
I must say, there is no book quite like this... it contains great ideas for approaching design projects for those who crave the unorthodox. I absolutely love the pieces featured within. Though I normally look for inspiration in everyday life, this book will have you really thinking of everything you encounter in terms of its application in your next project. Don't be surprised if you second guess your normal methodology, either.

Great inspiring book!.......2007-01-22
The autobiography of Roy and Dale Rogers. It is beautifully written, funny and touching. They were amazing Christian examples. It is so very rare for movie stars to be good examples, but they were. It was great to read about their personal lives after watching so many of their movies and listening to their music. They were just ordinary people who became famous. They were kind, loving people. My whole family just read this one aloud. It was awesome. A great read!

This is a wonderful, warm and personal look into the lives of Roy Rogers, the King of the Cowboys and Dale Evans Rogers, the Queen of the West. This book gives the stories of Roy's life from his humble beginnings in Duck Run, Ohio and Dale's start in Uvalde, Texas to their present lives in Apple Valley, California. The stories of their joys and hardships are very touching. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is fan of Roy or Dale as well as anyone who wants to read an inspiring story about the Hollywood couple who are heros in real life just as they were in the movies. The only suggestion I would have for the next edition of this book is that it needs an index. The stories are so wonderful you'll be wanting to see more photos and hear more of Roy and Dales personal stories
