The Salaryman's Wife is proof that arts grants do occasionally produce good art. Sujata Massey taught English in Japan and worked as a reporter for the Baltimore Sun. She applied for and won the Malice Domestic Grant for Unpublished Writers, which allowed her to finish this beautifully crafted story of cross-cultural suspense.

Rei Shimura is a 27-year-old Japanese American English teacher, living precariously on her tiny paycheck in Tokyo, the most expensive city in the world. She's determined not to use the plane ticket back to California offered by her parents. On a visit to the ancient castle town of Shiroyama, brought to such rich life that you'll want to head there instantly, Rei gets involved in a local murder. Her probing angers the conservative police and most of the citizens, but Rei persists, in spite of threats to her life and freedom. Her character is so well conceived and her adventures so believable that readers across the world should identify with Rei--and hope for a second serving soon.

Book Description

Japanese-American Rei Shimura is a 27-year-old English teacher living in one of Tokyo's seediest neighborhoods. She doesn't make much money, but she wouldn't go back home to California even if she had a free ticket (which, thanks to her parents, she does.) Her independence is threatened however, when a getaway to an ancient castle town is marred by murder.

Rei is the first to find the beautiful wife of a high-powered businessman, dead in the snow. Taking charge, as usual, Rei searches for clues by crashing a funeral, posing as a bar-girl, and somehow ending up pursued by police and paparazzi alike. In the meantime, she manages to piece together a strange, ever-changing puzzle--one that is built on lies and held together by years of sex and deception.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great.......2007-06-08

This book is interesting, and a light read.

The Tokyo setting had its good and bad points.
The Good: I enjoyed the fact that it was set in Tokyo, I am quite familiar with the city, and it was nice to read about places I've been to or heard about.
The Bad: On the other hand, I did not like her representation of Japanese people. Every single one of her Japanese characters made some negative comment about foreigners, even people who were her friends and family (who probably would not continually say, "Since you are a foreigner, you would not know this..."). Also most of her female Japanese characters were very catty, although to be honest, basically every female character looks down on Rei. Mariko, the woman Rei feels compelled to help protect is such a brat that I didn't care what happened to her.

The mystery itself is interesting, although fairly easy to figure out. The clues are not very subtle.

Overall, I liked the book. I'll read more in the series when I want a light read. However, I hope that people who have never been to Japan will not think that this book is an accurate representation of Japanese people.

5 out of 5 stars Forsaking luxury is what I'm most proud of.......2007-02-15

Rei: I love luxury, forsaking it is what I'm most proud of.

The Salaryman's Wife is about 21st Century Japanese Samurai: the Japanese mafia called Yakusa and the Ya-San's junior motorcycle gang Bosuzoku, their Geisha Samurai consort bar girls and Rei Shimura a formidable Samurai woman strong-minded self-confident loyal.

Rei Shimura moves from California to Tokyo at age 24 because of her passion for Japan, it`s people culture folk art and antiques. Through 8 books the illiterate (cannot read kanji) antique buyer Rei progresses to age 30 solving mysteries of murder and Japanese culture along the way. The Salaryman's Wife is #1 and like the first Nero Wolf, displays all the eccentricities defining its repertory cast.

Rei is konketsujin, a denigrating appellation for half blood Japanese.

Rei's mother is a sexy blond Baltimore socialite interior decorator with a penchant for designer clothes, her father a Japanese University of California psychiatrist. Her parents live in the toney hills of San Francisco and want nothing more than to lavish all their attention and money on their only child. However Rei's heart is drawn to Japan where her Samurai blood seeks self-support and self-sufficiency, rejecting the comfortable luxury her parents offer.

In Tokyo Rei's Auntie Nori Shimura, cousins physician Tom and collegian Chika offer Rei family sanctuary and refuge which she rejects. Her father's brother, a traditional salaryman, works in another city and visits home only occasionally.

Through each book the reader learns Japanese language, as in the 5 disc DVD Shogun with Richard Chamberlain, as well as culture and prejudice. The murder takes place in a minshuku family run inn of Shiroyama, origin of Shunkei carving. The town is the site of ghost stories about Samurai Princess Miyo Shiroyama who failed at seppuku ritual suicide in the 1800s and continues to roam the surrounding forests.

Rei's experiences of Japanese prejudice as an American, as konketsujin, is a mirror image of the Chinese woman in the Joy Luck Club. Rei's Samurai refusal to accept dependency is similar to the matriarchal Chinese ethnic tribe Muoso where women accept a man informally in a "walking marriage" and walk away if he displeases her.

A wealthy fashion conscious Japanese trophy wife Setsuko Nakamura dies at the minshuku over the New Year holiday and Rei discovers that lies return to haunt even decades later, and sexual repression wreaks harm in the cross fire of hormonal drive and fantasy.

The entire 8 book series is a thoughtful journey through Zen Buddhism, the mixed parentage pregnancies of war and occupation, and a passion for self determination. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Lively modern Japanese mystery series.......2006-07-10

The Salaryman's Wife introduces Rei Shimura, a Japanese American young woman living in Tokyo, Japan. Rei works as an English tutor and lives in a seamy neighbourhood with her gay roommate, Richard. Trouble starts when Rei travels to the ancient castle town of Shiroyama for the New Year. She stumbles across the body of one of the inn guests, the wife of a high-powered businessman. I really enjoyed this book: Rei is a feisty, likable protagonist, giving the reader a crash course in Japanese Culture 101. The only gripe I have was the improbability of Rei's involvement, why would she track down the murderer of a woman she barely knew and seemed to dislike? Having said that, though, it's a great read and I'm definitely going to check out the rest of the series.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate but wandering.......2006-06-23

There's much to like about this book. The mystery is adequate, although follows well-known lines where every ordinary event connects to a larger conspiracy, and the characters are personable. However, they're disposable plastic like the world that confines them. Massey writes convincingly of the conflict one might feel caught between the cultures of east and west, as does the half-Japanese half-American protagonist, but there is no hope to these people. A plastic world does something to them, and they react, and are given plastic rewards. I recommend this reading this book to acquire an enduring sense of hopelessness.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Accidental Detective.......2005-11-09

Rei Shimura a Japanese-American, who grew up in the States, is teaching English in Tokyo and barely getting by. Her accented Japanese gives her away as a foreigner and she's living with an openly gay man. Her neighborhood is seedy, her clothes are shabby, her hair is too short for Japanese tastes and if that isn't enough, her parents have reserved her a ticket back to America, but she's determined to stick it out in Tokyo.

During a New Years's Eve trip to a ski resort she stumbles upon the body of the beautiful wife on a high-powered businessman, who was also a guest at the family-run inn where she's staying. Rei can't help herself, she has to try and solve the murder, so she turns amateur detective, angering the police and exciting the press. She's a fast talker who is awfully suspicious, she even suspects, for a bit, the Scottish lawyer Hugh Glendenning who she has an affair with, but will she solve the crime before she becomes a victim herself?

In my opinion Rei Shimura is a perfect accidental private-eye and this is a perfect five star mystery.

        3 out of 5 stars Endearing characters.......2007-09-07

Heroes in contemporary romance all stem from the common mold of Navy SEALs, bodyguards, sports athletes, billionaires and detectives. Known for amusing yet uniquely sensual "nerdy" books, Vicki Lewis Thompson's TALK NERDY TO ME managed to strike a fresh appeal with its 6-foot-5 electrical engineering hero (tall, dark and handsome of course) and fashion model with very creative aspirations building inventions. Common interests in science and technology, yet profoundly contrasting backgrounds and personalities, weld the attraction in TALK NERDY TO ME and shortly thereafter, the love. I found all the characters in TALK NERDY TO ME very endearing and the h/h chemistry crackled with a resounding electricity. The sexual innuendo in the technical jargon was generally funny and sexy too, though a bit cheesy at times. I overlooked some of the technical inconsistencies mainly because Vicki Lewis Thompson definitely has a knack for making brainy talk sound like an aphrodisiac. I really enjoyed the first half of the novel, but I thought much of the later parts in this 357-page paperback failed to maintain the first half's excitement and engagement. The resolution to the primary plot at the end was quick and empty, and I found the Where-Are-They-Now epilogue four years after-the-fact, extremely on the cornball cheesy side. Over-the-top careers were handed out to everyone in the epilogue. Much of the novel takes place over the course of one night, and it felt like a draining, episodic marathon: pizza, fix washer, take Manny and Kyle to see Rick and Eunice next door, eat, drop off Rick, block off damaged back door, make love, head over to mom & Aunt Myrtle's, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, you get the point. The plotting and pacing are subpar, the settings deficient, the prose below average. Still, the likable, refreshing characters and light-hearted tone relays an entirely readable experience, and for half the time, an entertaining fare. The sensuality isn't bad, but Anne Stuart's INTO THE FIRE (***) still takes the prize for the most sizzling contemporary romance I've read to date (admittedly, that list is limited).

        4 out of 5 stars Another winner!.......2007-01-01

I love these Nerd books by Vickie Lewis Thompson. I first discovered her Harlequin titles and fell for her inventive stories and characters. She has continued that trend with her Nerd series.

4 out of 5 stars Loaded With Quirky Fun.......2006-05-30

As a long-time fan of Ms. Thompson's, her latest book wasn't quite as good as my expectations for it, but I still enjoyed the story. The heroine and hero are both unique and supported by a quirky cast of secondary characters. If you are first-time reader of Ms. Thompson's I wouldn't suggest starting with this book, but do pick it up for a fun afternoon read.

        4 out of 5 stars Romance & Comedy.......2006-04-18

New York fashion model, Eve Dupree dreams of being an inventor. Modeling is what pays the bills; inventing is what feeds Eve's soul. Eve is currently working on a top secret project in her garage. But she needs a little help from the local nerd to get her invention off the drawing board and into the air.

Engineer Charlie Shepherd finds Eve's intellect incredibly sexy. Add that to her great looks and Eve presents Charlie with quite a complication. For Charlie has big plans. Plans to move away to pursue a goal he can never achieve in small town Middlesex, Connecticut. But Charlie finds Eve a temptation he cannot resist.

Eve finds Charlie pretty irresistible too. But someone is trying to shut down Eve's project and Eve doesn't know who to trust. She has to question the loyalty of everyone around her. Including her sexy nerd, Charlie.

Talk Nerdy to Me is my first "nerd" experience. The title caught my attention and I decided to give it a try. I enjoyed my afternoon with the nerds, Eve and Charlie. This is, however, a book that will not appeal to all readers as it is very quirky with quite a few unbelievable elements. Lucky for me, I don't let reality interfere with my reading experience.

I found Ms. Thompson's humor delightfully flakey. The characters were engaging and well-rounded. The plot, however, was a little over the top. If this book were a straight contemporary romance, I'd be completely unforgiving and unable to suspend disbelief. What saves this book is it's comedy element. Comedies allow me to accept elements that normally would cause me to roll my eyes. If you enjoy comedy in your romance, you'll enjoy Talk Nerdy to Me.

3 out of 5 stars Fun characters, but the nerdy talk . . . ew........2006-04-07

Good parts: The characters are a hoot. While many were farfetched, they were believable enough to suspend disbelief and just enjoy. The book was fun, and I laughed many times.

Not as good parts: The plot behind it was kind of predictable, but that wasn't a major problem because the people were interesting. However, the "nerdy talk" during sex was just too over the top. It was just kind of . . . icky, for lack of a better word, and really turned me off the book every time I got to one of those scenes.

Some of the stories are quite similar to others. Of course, they all have to do with dragons, but several fall in the Hero goes to slay Dragon formula. The Orson Scott Card does not seem to fit in the traditional dragon formula and is the outstanding story. The Anne MaCaffrey is good but overwritten at points. I expected more from the Zelazny. It was very good, but Zelazny has done such mind-blowing work that this seems to be a bit trite. The Friesner is hillarious and the best of the funny stories in this book. The Martin and Tilton are quite good, but not estradordinary. The rest were merely okay, except for The Ever-After which had horrid prose.

This was a fairly good book. It gave a lot of information that someone might use while reading any of Anne McCaffrey's books. I liked this book because of that. Anyone who likes dragons could use this book.

The inclusion of the first few chapters of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern disguised as a short story was disappointing though.

3 out of 5 stars Good if you are a Gym Person.......2006-02-17

For under 50 pages, this book is good for the beginner who is going to join a gym or is going to start using the membership she has been paying for.

It is straight forward and simple. A good tool to have if you are looking to focus on improving your rear end, especially if you are just starting out.

1 out of 5 stars The entire book does not deserve to be more than a magazine article.......2006-01-26

Besides pictures of fitness models, including some famous ones, often wearing thongs to show off a fab behind, what you get for the price of this book is:
                    a. Lunges, Squats, Leg raises, hyperextensions are good lower body exercises.
                    b. If you have a big, jiggly backside, then these exercises done high-rep with low weight will help. Additionally you need cardio.
                    c. If you have a flat, too-small butt go high weight, low rep.
                    d. If your butt is too big you need to be careful about what you eat too. Dont severely restrict calories. Cut back sensibly instead.

If the above made sense you dont need the book. If it did not the book wont help much. It does not have enough pointers on form and instructions how to do each exercise. At one point, it actually has a paragraph that just tells you to use a bun machine if your gym has one. No instructions on how to do the execise and no pictures to illustrate. The other exercises are described a bit more, but not enough for a novice.

2 out of 5 stars Good advice. But..........2003-11-28

The main reason this only gets 2 stars is that it's poor value for money - less than 50 pages!
However what there is is very good, & the layout & pictures are excellent.

If you don't have access to a gym, don't get this book. I thought I could use this book for home workouts, but I was wrong. I don't understand why they write books for people to use at the gym, when you can get plenty of advice at the gym and all of the instructions on how to use the equipement is on the machines. If you want an at home workout, don't get this book.

I loved this book. It gives a lot of examples of what to feed your little one when they start solids. It offers a wide variety of recipes which are designed to be shared with the whole family, as well as some just for the baby, and just for the baby and one parent. I like that the author assumes your child can develop a more sophisticated palate and enjoy foods other than mac and cheese and hot dogs. The recipes are fairly uncomplicated, and the book includes sections for microwave cooking and slowcooker cooking. The author kept a diary of her daughter's eating from when she started solids until she was two, so you can see the progression from rice cereal all the way up to eating just like adults. There is some info regarding food allergies, though most of the recipes assume that isn't a problem. My daughter just turned one, and she really likes everything I have given her from this book.

I recently learned the value of a quilt label. I made a quilt for my 10-year-old grandniece, a kid who hasn't had much to call "mine." She liked the quilt, but she _loved_ the label, which said, "Made just for [name] by great-aunt Esther." ("Look, Mom! Look what it says!") Yes, I included the date and my full name, but the "just for me" value made it obvious that this girl will keep her quilt until it wears out.

So yes: you really should label every quilt!

I've had this book for a couple of years, and I've been loathe to review it because I haven't actually made any of the charming quilt labels that the author teaches you to make. It feels rather like someone who makes pound cakes trying to review a fancy wedding-cake book. But after the aforementioned Label Experience, I feel compelled to suggest that you do get (or at least paw through) this book. I learned a lot, from just the first few pages; until then, I hadn't realized that there were options for ironing-on labels or print-to-fabric.

That single "aha!" helped me improve my label-creation skills immeasurably (the previous efforts involved really ugly embroidery). For instance, the label for my niece's wedding quilt included a printed (well, ironed-on) engagement photo of the couple. Yeah, that went over well, too.

This book has several delightful examples of innovative quilt labels, which include a fabric "envelope" in which the details of an older quilt might be stored. I've looked through the book several times without making any of them, but saying, "Oh, isn't that nice!" every time. I just stick with my pound cake, I guess.

If you're ready to make your quilts even more special, this book will definitely help you. But even if you aren't -- One-of-a-Kind Quilt Labels will help you improve your existing skills and it'll inspire you to make an effort to improve them. I'm glad I got this book; I think you'll like it, too.

Wow! what a fun book! I will never make boring labels again. I love the little three dimensional animals for children's quilts. The section on making labels for old quilts was wonderful, especially with the photos of the quiltmakers and the people who got the quilts. A large number of the labels in the book were printed on the computer. I will try that and I want to try the crayon labels also. Might even try the cross stitch one....

I love this book! Ms. Nerud presents a wealth of unique ideas for all skill levels. The writing is excellent, the directions concise and easily understood, and the book itself is visually appealing. Her suggestions are easily adaptable for other sewing projects in need of a personal touch that only a one of a kind, specially created "made by.." label can provide.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and attractive quilt labels.......2004-07-21

Quilts should be labeled so that they become heirlooms. Thea Nerud's mission is to get ALL quilts labeled, and offers several ideas for attractive and informative labels. Thea shows how to transfer photographs and lettering onto washable fabric labels that become a permanent part of the quilt. The lettering can be computer generated. She's done a great job and shows several tested and illustrated techniques.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of expensive storage ideas.......2006-09-07

"301 Stylish Storage Ideas" is part of the Better Homes and Gardens collection of books. I purchased it hoping for some novel storage ideas for my new home. Overall, the book is fairly well done; however, as other reviewers have noted, most of the tips involve pricey permanent storage, such as built-in bookcases, bathroom cabinets, and kitchen islands. If you plan on having high-end built-in storage added to your home, then this book might be useful.

However, readers seeking less costly or more temporary storage ideas should look elsewhere. Most of these tips primarily consist of placing baskets and bins in various places around the home - not particularly innovative. My home is newly built, so I don't want the incur expense right now of adding built-ins to several rooms with storage needs. As a result, these tips really didn't help me much.

On a positive note, the pictures are quite nice; even though it was published in 1998, everything still looks fairly current. Unfortunately, the pictures typically show an entire room incorporating several types of storage, and items were not numbered to correspond to the accompanying tip. Thus, it was sometimes difficult to locate in the pictures specific storage items described in the text. Overall, I enjoyed looking through this book and seeing what people do for storage, but I won't be incorporating any of these concepts into my home any time soon.

When I first bought this book, I was hoping to find new ideas for my new walk-in closet.. unfortunately the book wasn't all that.. It didn't seem to have "301" ideas.. all it seemed to show are normal photos of everyday closets and storage places..

I personally do not recommend it..

I thought this would be a book on novel ways to stash your stuff. It was... but I was looking for ideas on cool containers and other low-budget ways to fit more storage space in my one-bedroom apartment. It instead is a book on good ideas (with great photos) if you're already tearing out a wall in your house, as in great for long term construction plans, but not so helpful for those with a more transient, non-house-owning lifestyle. If I had my own house, I would have given 4 stars. Apartment dwellers, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Australian Home Owners Too.......2002-05-22

As an Australian Home Renovator I'm always a little concerned about how relevant an American book will be to me. This book gave me no such concern. I initially brought the book for some general storage ideas. What impressed me were the fantastic photo's of solutions that not only help control clutter but also add great design features to my home. I especially like the transformation of an old built in wardrobe (or closet) into a tiny library. A fantastic, attractive solution for my book storing dilemma! Also easily achieved in the small space of a 2 bedroom apartment where some rooms have duel duties.

4 out of 5 stars Plenty of Bang for the Buck.......2000-03-16

Like most of the BH&G decorating books, I've found this one to be an exceptional value. Every page has full color photos and interresting ideas for making the most out of a small amount of space. The book centers around a "new traditional" or "eclectic" style, but most ideas could probably be adapted to fit any decorating style. Includes a page titled, "Style and Your Television" - I don't know anybody that couldn't use some help there! This book would probably be most helpful for those either considering remodeling or construction, or those with some carpentry skills, but there are some great ideas for construction-free storage also. Worth the money!

I use to hate post modern art and the idea of appropriation until i discovered that one could take what already existed and create a completely new work of art from it. Greenaway is a genious of such, and his exhibits in Europe prove it, as do this book. This book is a fine example of the next step in photographic arts via the computer age using manipulation. A must for the visually aware of art and photo.

5 out of 5 stars from people who knew Johnny Mercer.......2006-07-09

From the dustjacket flaps of the U.S. hardcover edition:

"Moon River," "Blues In The Night," "Laura," "That Old Black Magic" and "Satin Doll" are only a handful from the enormous catalogue of hit songs written by Johnny Mercer. His wit and talent with words made him the peer of Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin and Oscar Hammerstein II, giants in the pantheon of songwriters. Many have compared him with his idol, W.S. Gilbert.
Our Huckleberry Friend is a collection of Mercer's lyrics and memorabilia. It covers Mercer's life from his Savannah, Georgia, childhood through his Hollywood days and the remarkable productive period of the thirties, forties and fifties.
We see the birth of the lively Capitol Records label, and Mercer's association with Nat "King" Cole, Peggy Lee, Betty Hutton, and many others. Mercer went on to win four Academy Awards and to experience the shattering disappointment of several Broadway shows that failed.
It is all here, the successes and the failures, written by Mercer's widow and his close friend Bob Bach. The handsome volume is illustrated with more than a hundred photographs, many from Mrs. Mercer's private albums.

Bob Bach's name became nationally known among television audiences as the producer of the long-running and very successful panel show "What's My Line." He produced other game shows and musical specials featuring such greats as Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton and Mel Torme. Before entering the video field he wrote for Down Beat, Metronome and Billboard magazines.

Ginger Mercer, who was a dancer on the Broadway stage before marrying Johnny Mercer in 1931, is currently [1982] carrying on the traditions of her late husband. She is a member of the council of The American Guild of Authors and Composers and recently formed the Johnny Mercer Foundation for Children.

                        3 out of 5 stars The Big J As Coffee-table Accessory.......1998-12-03

One day some sage will write a comprehensive biography of Johnny Mercer. Until then we'll have to settle for this tripe. Part coffee-table book, part biography, part social history, part songbook for the karaoke-impaired.... This book pursues all these goals, but really succeeds in none. The lack of focus is disorienting, and all the elements are thereby diluted. Still, it's a nice book to have about the house...along with Fowler and the Communist Manifesto....not entirely uninformative, but simply not truly satisfying. And let's face it, it's the best we'll get for a long time.
