Customer Reviews:
First mystery novel from now successful author, not bad !.......2002-08-25
Unlike lawyers Grisham, Turow, and Scottoline, turned writers, Steve Martini is a journalism graduate and writer who went on to become a lawyer! (Seems there ought to be a good joke in there somehow!) He must be doing fine, as his booklist now numbers eight (five of which comprise the defense attorney Paul Madriani series), with a ninth hardback due out late this year. Let's get real here folks -- this is his first book, and we thought, not bad at all.
In a very complex plot, almost shades of Clancy, we're quickly engrossed into the hunt for possible survivors of a 1942 blimp crash; a search for 16th century documents, possibly the journal of the explorer/pirate Francis Drake; the murder of the partner (and former {?} love interest) of the leading man, lawyer Sam Bogardus; and some other crimes and problems too numerous to recount. There's really not much lawyering happening, and sure, some of this winds up a little silly and improbable, but hey, it's mystery fiction. We thought the goings-on, climaxed by a very neat wrapping up of all the puzzles and murders, plus one totally unexpected revelation in the epilogue, were indeed quite entertaining. And the huge surprise ending left us aghast -- we cannot imagine many at all will be the slightest bit prepared for this icing on the cake!
In sum, a fine plot with quite a neat ending, with good story telling hurt somewhat by a few weak characters and/or some improbable action, gives Martini's first effort a passing grade, leaving us anxious to try his second outing and first of the Madriani set. Why not!
I liked it!.......2002-07-12
Some of the other reviews considered this to be a pretty poorly written book, but I found it to be very entertaining and the ending was a real surprise. The Simeon Chamber is not on the level of a Grisham or Turow novel, but I'd put it right there with a writer like William Bernhardt. It's a quick read and it is a page-turner. You may also learn a little about Sir Francis Drake that you didn't learn in high school or college. Give it a try.
WW II Vets creating havoc in California.......2001-09-30
Uh - what was that? One of the weirdest stories I've ever read, that's what. If you want a farcical story stringing together Sir Francis Drake, German Nazis, Chinatown, William Randolph Hearst, and a bunch of adventurous lawyers, then this book is for you. The ending was unexpected, and caused me to exclaim, "oh come on" out loud as I discovered who killed our hero's partner. For Martini fans, this one has none of the courtroom drama, but does weave in a lot of adventure. The story was well paced, but too incredible.
Don't Waste your time.......2001-08-09
The Simeon Chamber is the second Steve Martini book I have read (Compelling Evidence being the first) and I was thoroughly disappointed. The book tells the story of Sam Bogardus, a lawyer who is hired on what seems to be a simple adoption case at first. All of a sudden the plot evolves into a search for the lost journals of Francis Drake as well as trying to solve a murder that is 30 years past. Martini just fails to build a believable chain of events. Again, don't waste your time with this book. I will definitely give Martini another chance, because I found Compelling Evidence to be outstanding
A real page turner, but for the wrong reasons........2000-01-28
I read this book cover to cover on an airplane. I was INFATUATED with it, because I could not belive how horrible it was! I kept thinking that the next page would jump to life unlike the rest of the book which is nothing more than empty characters and plot that was obviously written after many viewings of the movie CHINATOWN. I must admit, I found the ending stunning, stunningly predictable and depressing. It does have nice title and the history noir is well researched, but that simply isn't enough for me. It truely is one of the worst books I've ever. read.

Book Description
Can a necklace hold the power to right a love gone wrong?
Five years ago Rafael, Duke of Sheffield, believed he was betrayed by the woman he loved and the pain haunts him still. When Rafe discovers that he was cruelly tricked, and that Danielle Duval was never unfaithful, he's desperate to win her back. But Dani is already on a steamer bound for America to marry another man. Impulsively, Rafe follows her and, trapping her in a compromising situation, quickly makes her his wife.
Promising her that with time he can prove his love and win her trust, Rafe presents her with a stunning necklace rumored to hold great power. As much as Dani wants to believe it can right the wrongs of the past, she fears there is one truth it cannot conceal, a truth that could cost her this second chance with Rafe, the only man she has ever loved . . .
Customer Reviews:
Boring story and unlikeable heroine.......2007-04-25
Too predictable. No interesting character development. I was so bored that I skimmed much of the book. I hated the heroine's actions and lies. I was not drawn to the hero. This was my first Kat Martin book and will probably be my last. Sexual content: moderate.
3rd novel in The Necklace trilogy.......2006-05-26
'The Handmaiden's necklace' by Kat Martin is a fantanisic Historical Romance. The Bride's Necklace is a thirteenth century pearl diamond necklace that has the legal that if the owner has pure heart that they will have good fortune and love. This necklace has been past along through out the series. This necklace was given to the Duke in hopes that he would find true love. The story begins with the Duke engaged but his ex-fiance resurfaced five years later after a terrible scandal. The story has nice mix of romance, mystery and heartache. I loved the series and they just got better and better. The Bride's Necklace (1) The Devil's Necklace (2) The Handmaiden's Necklace(3).
Did I miss something?.......2006-04-25
As I did not read the first two novels in this series, perhaps I missed something as I read "The Handmaiden's Necklace." For example:
1) Why was the title of the book "The Handmaiden's Necklace" when all throughout the book the item was referred to as "the Bride's necklace?" (True, Caro did take the necklace in order to assist Robert, but that was for such a short while.)
2) "Dani felt her heart kick into high gear..." Wow. Not the turn of phrase one expects to find in a historical/regency romance.
3) Addressed by other reviewers but worth another mention: Rafe waited FIVE years to decide to investigate "the incident"? Sure, one could argue he had an epiphany after seeing Dani again, but then to have the entire matter investigated and wrapped up so quickly.... HIGHLY implausible.
4) The author would have us believe that the protagonists conducted their most passionate and responsive lovemaking when they were at the height of anger with one another. Every time there was another misunderstanding/misinterpretation/deception Dani and Rafe were in each other's arms before anything was talked out. (Followed by the angry party slipping away early the next day.) This scenario might have been plausible once, but I would estimate the "resentful lover" situations accounted for half of their lovemaking.
5) The miracle baby at the end of the story: if you didn't see that one coming, especially after so many ominous "internal damage" hints, I'd be surprised. (And from a realistic perspective: with all that damage, wouldn't it have been better to write the end of the story with the baby already born?....)
After reading this book I doubt I'll peruse Ms. Martin's other offerings.
A Second Chance At Love!!!.......2006-03-14
Ms. Martin's last entry in the Bride Trilogy is not as strong as the others...but not as dismal as it could have been. This story seemed to lack the heart the previous titles offered. Still this was a nice regency romance a stand alone read if you've not read the previous titles in the series.
Five years earlier Rafe and Dani are engaged to be married. They are in love and all is right with the world until Rafe is lead to believe his Dani has been unfaithful. He finds her in a very delicate situation with another man. Crying off from the marriage, Rafe leaves Dani to face the gossips and to be shunned for her part in the escapade. She claims innocence but Rafe is to hurt to listen. Years later Rafe has learned that he has been duped. Dani had been telling the truth and he now vows to win his ladies heart back at all costs. He follows her across the Atlantic and keeps her from marrying an American...but at what cost? He has to resort to blackmail...he will do what he must because there is still a large attraction between them. Will he ever be able to win Danielle's heart for his own?
Danielle has lived the past five years in seclusion. She has been ruined in the eyes of society when Rafe ended their betrothal all those years ago. She is wants a happy ending more then her next breathe so she agrees to marry an American. She sets sail with her ladies maid and aunt for Philadelphia. There she hopes to have a fresh start with a happy ending. She is not prepared for Rafe's arrival and explanation. Or his need to have her at all costs. She agrees to marry him...but she will not love him again. At least she thinks she won't love him...but she can't forget how he makes her feel. When someone starts trying to kill them will they be able to sort out their feelings or will a killer manage to bring an end to their happy ending.
This was a push/pull romance and honestly it did start to wear a bit thin towards the end. Still Ms. Martin was able to create a wonderful secondary romance which was a pleasant addition to the story. Rafe and Dani were endearing characters but the vehicle in which Ms. Martin kept them separate did not allow for a believable romance. This was the weaker of the three stories but a fair addition to the series.
Kat Martin - Where is the Romance?.......2006-02-18
Kat Martin wraps up the "Bride's Necklace" trilogy, with THE HANDMAIDEN'S NECKLACE and measurably, the final entry lacks emotion. Martin's writing style is wretchedly distant and for a genre that floats in emotion, a distant writing style is a major problem!
Five years ago, their betrothal ended. Rafael Saunders, the Duke of Sheffield, promised her forever - but he believed the lies. Once, Rafael and Danielle were in love, but their marriage never happened - he had believed the lies! Losing him cut deep . . . and now . . . now . . . he wanted to do it all over again . . .
Rafael Saunders, the Duke of Sheffield, no longer was a passionate youth. Danielle's betrayal still pained him; yet, he could not forget the woman who had stolen his heart. The memory of Danielle still haunted him and suddenly Sheffield wanted to know the truth . . . what really happened five years ago? F I N A L L Y, Rafael decided to get to the bottom of his nightmare! And shockingly . . . it seemed the entire affair was nothing more than an enemy enjoying a cruel, vindictive joke.
Now . . . let the games begin!
Quietly, Rafael Saunders and Danielle Duval wed. Kat Martin's game? The standard "discontent/deception" theme. For weeks, Rafe and Danielle do not make love - Danielle needs time to adjust. The necklace is missing - is Danielle lying? Desperately, the Duke of Sheffield needs an heir - Danielle is barren and consciously she holds back the truth. An attempt is made on Danielle's life - is Rafael responsible?
This is cagey writing. By using the "discontent/deception" theme, an author can cover much ground. In THE HANDMAIDEN'S NECKLACE, Kat Martin remains true to form. The "discontent" theme displays lustful nights and unpleasant days. The "deception" theme uncovers guilt and half-truths. Both themes are acceptable if the story has a degree of excitement; unfortunately, here that is not so! When it comes to the romance genre, the reader wants and demands emotion. Kat Martin is a bestselling author; unfortunately, "bestselling" and "expertise" do not necessarily create winning novels. Without a doubt, Kat Martin wrote THE HANDMAIDEN'S NECKLACE from experience - not from her heart!

Not really helpful.......2007-04-10
nothing you can't find on the internet. don't waste your money on this book....
Someone you Love is Depressed.......2006-02-02
Very Good and helpful book hoping it will keep me on the right track where I want to be. It has helped my boyfriend understand alittle more.
Thank You ! Thank You ! Thank You !.......2005-02-22
My love one and me were is a very low situation before I started reading this book. He has slight depression and taking Paxil as a medication. Aside the side effect of the pills, depression also changed some of his behavior, and his attitude toward our daily life. I felt negleted, and suspect that our love is no more there.
The worse thing is I don't know what is happending, how to deal with that, and should I talk to him.
After reading this book, it clearly explained everything I need to know. From what kind of symptoms he may has, what kind of medication will result to what kind of effects, to how to deal with the situation, and how to conduct a positive communication.
I am grateful about reading this book. Becuase of it, those depressive conversations during a big disagreement, I was able to calm myself and really see through the heart of the one I love, to see behind it was just a inconfident and insurced heart which need a strong ally. Instead of arguing over nonscence, I gave him a hug and kiss, and reassure my love one we will go throught whatever turmoil together.
This book saved our relationship, saved my love one, and saved me. Like a lighthouse, it points a direction with light. I am very grateful.
Not overly informative.......2005-01-16
Honestly, the only way to help a loved one understand depression is to talk to them about it. Do some research on the internet about the symptoms, common issues and what to look out for. I don't expect someone to read a book about depression because no case is the same.
A depressed person says..........2004-08-23
The person while he gives good advice in some areas but not in others. The book ignores some of the real and unsolvable causes of depression such as, the crises of expectations with regards to oneself and how society operates on the whole.
Some people are and will be depressed through their biology/neurology throughout life no matter how successful they are. You can't ignore people who have everything in regards to resources yet kill themselves or are hopelessly miserable. How can one have all those resources, doctors, therapists, and the best medicine and alternatives can offer at ones disposal and then still be depressed for instance?
A failure to understand that some people are victims of the laws of genetics, environment and nature of society... permanently. Many times people are also brought to the brink through our cut throat and uncaring capitalist society. Case in point: Many people commit suicide due to financial issues they cannot get out of which many aren't there own fault, debt accumulated through just paying for a roof over your head, means to get to work and the 'true' necessities of modern working life.

An artful and indepth look into Singaporian, Malaysian, and Indonesian cuisine!.......2007-09-02
The author provides wonderful ancedotes for each of the recipes that truly inspire the Western cook. The book is filled with the many encounters the author has had along his journey and vividly retells them with such insight. The recipes are written in a simple, yet descript manner that should not intimidate nor offend the novice or professional cook. This book is truly a gem and is recommended for all who are interested in experiencing the awe of cuisine from the Spice Islands.
wonderful flavors.......2007-08-23
I did some traveling in Malaysia and Indonesia a few years ago and loved most of what I ate. This book has given me the opportunity to try making some of those foods at home. His mouthwatering descriptions of the key ingredients include even some brand recommendations and make finding and purchasing these novel and exotic items much less intimidating. He explains in great detail the required cooking techniques and his recipes are extremely easy to follow. Every recipe I have tried so far has been fantastic.
No Show, All Tell.......2007-05-30
If you want a cookbook with no photos, this one's for you. I read the reviews before buying but only one mentioned wanting more pictures. This is an understatement. The text may be good -- I don't know because I'm still getting over the disappointment of what might have been -- but the few photos there are feature ingredients (how many chili shots do I need?) and a few of the less interesting dishes.
Oseland's book draws you in.........2007-05-20
Great writing and excellent recipes. I've tried the beef sate recipe so far and it's is very tasty.
Exotic but so intriguing.......2007-05-13
No wonder this book was a James Beard winner for 2007. The text is exceptional-you feel like you are there. The photos are perfect. All the food is interesting and the ingredients are available-if you know where to obtain them. Many foods can be bought locally and if you run into a snag, there are internet sites listed. An exceptional book.

Customer Reviews:
Not very informative.......2003-07-01
When I first bought this book, I was already collecting most of the series mentioned (There is a of them on the front of the book). The first series mentioned was Ruth Fielding. Four formats were listed, of the five formats that exist. This was the first warning. All through the book, John Axe combined formats, or did not list them at all. Although it gives some nice eronious information (i.e. information about the stratmeyer synicate), most of the contents can be found after a two mininte search on Google. At one point, I emailed John Axe with a few Beverly Gray formats that he did not include in the guide. In his reply, he called them "anomalties", and compared them with some misprints that he owned. As of yet, I have not found a good guide, except ones for individual series. ...
Great Book ..........2003-03-10
For the majority of the book, the glossy pages are filled with pictures of nearly every cover of our favorite girls' series books. The Dana Girls section does NOT contain all the different artwork and seems to be slapped together and added to the book at the last moment. But other than that, I liked the book...
A slight disappointment.......2002-08-07
I bought this book because I wanted to see pictures of all the Dana Girls books. I can't believe that is the only series that isn't pictured fully! Only one book cover in each format of the Dana Girls is pictured. All the other series have every book pictured. That was very disappointing. It was fun to see new books added for this update of the author's previous book: Cherry Ames, Connie Blair, and Vicki Barr, but a letdown that the Dana Girls books were overlooked. I probably wouldn't have purchased this if I'd known.
Book Description
For readers who want to go beyond feng shui to the next level of home enhancement, this beautifully illustrated book looks to the mythology and psychology of the home, while showing imaginative and practical ways to use light, color, and sound to give any living space a welcoming and relaxing ambience.
Designing and arranging spaces that improve the quality of life-spiritually, emotionally, and physically-can make a home, be it a spacious house or a single room, a refuge from a stressful world. Readers will find the process of improving their home to be simple and fun as they follow the book's formulas. For example, the "Loose Living" chapter shows how people with no sewing skills can enhance a room by swathing and draping furniture in fresh fabric as an instant cover-up for a battered sofa-or use fabric as an ally to filter the light atmospherically or conceal a dismal view. The "Found Objects" chapter shows how finds from junk shops, flea markets, and other secondhand sources can be transformed into treasured keepsakes. Instructions for arranging the home to attract success and energy and clear clutter painlessly are among the many easy-to-implement tips presented.
Customer Reviews:
Great approach, with a bit of everything.......2005-02-21
This book pulls together a variety of spiritual concepts - feng shui, goddesses, purification/smudging, creating altars, use of stones and crystals, aromatherapy/scents in the home, and colors. It's really a great overview. Activities like spring cleaning and decluttering are covered as are specific rooms like bedrooms, kitchen, etc. There are some terrific photographs throughout the book which really inspire. I like that the author put all of this together into one book. I have other books that talk around all this - one on feng shui, one on crystals, one on potpourri, etc. This book ties them together and I feel like now I can go back to those other books and apply them better.
One of the best "sacred space" books I've read.......2001-02-13
This book was a real "find" for me. I have several books on feng shui and space clearing, and this one was intuitive, yet practical at the same time. It is spiritual but loaded with remedies for clearing one's space on this earth while we are here! I never thought to talk to my house, yet it makes perfect sense! It reads almost like a novel and is just full of information. I wish I could go home from work now and continue with the "read"!
Great Overview of different spiritual aspects of home.......2000-03-30
When I first looked over this book I did not get into it. But as I began to buy new furniture for a new home and pulled together my tastes and sytles (The Domain Book is great for that!), I found this book to be a wonderfully insightful book that helped me to consider Feng Shui and blessing my home and many other spiritual and tangible aspects of this place called my home. I have ordered a second one today for a friend.
No pictures, but lots of good info........1999-08-27
This book is a good introduction to lots of new age stuff (and common sensical stuff, too) relating to homes. Alexander gives recommendations of other books if you want to dig deeper into a particular topic.
Lots of information but not enough pictures.......1999-06-26
I enjoy reading, but I am a very visual person and was disappointed in this book because while it offers suggestions that make sense, it takes longer to get through the book since it is practically all words and very few pictures for inspiration.

Hold it sideways and have some fun........2003-11-02
You have to hold this book sideways to read it so there you already look a bit Mad to begin with.
In the 1950s America was a very conservative place so when Mad hit the newsstands of anytown USA it was like the cultural equivelant of an A-bomb going off. Mad parodied anything that moved and was freshest and most vital in the beginning of its run.
The parodies remain a fresh today as they did then with hundreds of small sight gags that will take more than one rereading to find.
Classic humor from The Usual Gang Of Idiots.......2002-04-12
Funny stuff from the early days of Mad. The crisp b&w art in this 50th anniversary edition looks great. Handy paperback size. Be sure to check out the 1st volume of this series, "The Mad Reader".

Customer Reviews:
Essential Dead.......2005-02-08
As the legends and myths associated with Grateful Dead continue to multiply, this book provides a perspective built from the original sources. Essential addition to the extensive GD literature.
Intricate and multi-faceted jewel of a book.......2005-02-07
With its subtitle, "An Oral and Visual Portrait of the Grateful Dead," the subtle magic of this book is hinted at. Weaving together a gold mine of interview material, the book tells story of the Dead's career using the words of the musicians themselves. Gans' and Simons's touch is light but their editing must have been a gargantuan task, with the result being a seamless, highly readable and enlightening look at the inner workings of the band over the first twenty years of its life. Highly recommended!
Very, very light reading.......2001-07-16
This is a very simplistic "picture-book" about the dead. There are much more authoritative/informative books around about the history and sociology of the dead.
But only 3 if your not a dead fan.......2000-09-27
The pictures here are amazing and truly make it worthwhile for the dead fan. The story could be a lot clearer and informative.
