Book Description
By now, Beatrix Potter, the beloved children's author, has won over human and animal hearts alike in her new home, the sleepy village of Sawrey. In this new novel, animal lover Miss Potter sets out to solve a case that will affect all creatures, great and small, when a gentle shepherd is found murdered.
Customer Reviews:
Not your average cozy.......2007-09-12
A great installment in the Beatrix Potter mystery series, although I felt it had a more serious and slightly darker undertone that the first book (The Tale of Hilltop Farm) didn't. In The Tale of Hollow How, there were some occurrences of animal cruelty -- not graphic, but enough to make it an adult-themed cozy.
Overall, this book is a good addition to the series and I highly recommend it to everyone who likes a good old fashioned English village cozy.
It's all about children ..........2007-09-05
The Tale of Holly How starts with Beatrix Potter's return to Near Sawrey in July of 1906. Mr. Biddle is supposed to be working on the new addition to Hill Top Farm's house so that Beatrix can live in the house and the Jennings can have the new addition. However, Mr. Biddle doesn't like taking orders from a woman. A badger digger has captured a mother badger and her daughter from their sett at Hill Top Farm. Jeremy Crosfield finds the injured young male badger and takes him to the vet for treatment. Lady Longford demands that the school board appoint her choice for head teacher overlooking Miss. Nash while ignoring her own granddaughter who, after the death of her parents, now lives in Tidmarsh Manor. Then when Beatrix and Mr. Jennings go to pick up the Herdwick sheep, they find Ben Hornby at the bottom of a small cliff -- murdered.
All these threads come together in ingenious ways as the humans and animals of the story get involved to solve the various mysteries. We learn more of the village and its culture and secrets. Characters introduced in The Tale of Hill Top Farm return and are given more depth and interest. We see friendships developing and Beatrix blooming with the responsibilities she has taken on to make something of her farm and her part-time life in Near Sawrey. She's becoming part of the village landscape and as readers, we get to vicariously enjoy her growth as she moves from outsider to one of 'them'.
There's more than one mystery to be solved; however, Albert handles the many threaded narrative deftly and we get to enjoy the points of views of humans and animals again as they work toward common goals of protecting their loved ones and maintaining the safety of the community in which they live.
While fanciful because of the intermixing of dialogue between animals along with the more expected human narrative, the book is a wonderful break from reality. It entertains and puzzles us with mysteries to be solved but it also gives us a look into a world that was -- that small village community that perhaps in a way we wish we could visit. Here's your chance to steep yourself in that mileau while enjoying a break from the routine of your daily life. Read and close the book refreshed in spirit as well as mentally satified.
Book also contains a Historical Note, Resource Reading List, and recipes for Sarah Barwick's Lemon Bars, Mrs. Lythecoe's Recipe for Rhubarb and Raspberry Tart, Mrs. Beeton's Veal and Ham Pie - Recipe No.898, Cumberland Sausage Rolls, and Lady Longford's Favorite Ginger Cake.
Delightful and Imaginative.......2007-05-15
This is a highly readable book that weaves in and out between the human and animal world. It will appeal to animal lovers and those who relate to the idea of animals talking among themselves. Beatrix Potter, the main character, is a very strong and intelligent woman who gets to the heart of the matter to solve the crime. Her life, based partially on reality, and part fiction unfolds before us continuing on from the first novel, The Tale of Hilltop Farm. I recommend this book, it is delightful and takes you away to a far away farm and village with realistic characters.
Love this one also.......2007-03-05
I love all the books in this series. Wish she would write faster.
A Good Cozy Mystery.......2006-09-09
I just finished this book. I think I liked it better than the first one, but maybe I just got used to the style of it. I read it faster than the first one, which I think I read last year. I like the talking animals. There are sheep and badgers in this one. Beatrix Potter buys some Herdwick sheep and they speak like sheep. For instance, one might say something like "I'll be baaack" since sheep baa (extra A's in some of their sentences). Galileo Newton Owl, since owls say whoo, has extra O's inserted into his speech.
When I started this book I only intended to read a little (since I always have my nose stuck in more than one book at a time), but got interested in it and I finished it much sooner than I thought I would. Soon I will start reading the next book, The Tale of Cuckoo Brow Wood.

Book Description
A laird trapped between centuries...
Enchanted by a powerful spell, Highland laird Drustan MacKeltar slumbered for nearly five centuries hidden deep in a cave, until an unlikely savior awakened him. The enticing lass who dressed and spoke like no woman he’d ever known was from his distant future, where crumbled ruins were all that remained of his vanished world. Drustan knew he had to return to his own century if he was to save his people from a terrible fate. And he needed the bewitching woman by his side....
A woman changed forever in his arms...
Gwen Cassidy had come to Scotland to shake up her humdrum life and, just maybe, meet a man. How could she have known that a tumble down a Highland ravine would send her plunging into an underground cavern — to land atop the most devastatingly seductive man she’d ever seen? Or that once he’d kissed her, he wouldn’t let her go?
Bound to Drustan by a passion stronger than time, Gwen is swept back to sixteenth-century Scotland, where a treacherous enemy plots against them ... and where a warrior with the power to change history will defy time itself for the woman he loves....
Customer Reviews:
This is my favorite romance story.......2007-10-09
I absolutely loved this book and have read it many time. This my favorite so far for Karen's highlander series. I can't wait for her to write more. These guys are hot!
Good book, good author, good series!.......2007-09-11
I'm usually pretty picky about what kind of romance novels I read. There are so many talented authors out ther but at the same time there are quite a few that I would rather write the novel myself that have to read their version.
I think that this author and her "Highlander" series is great. You can find more information on the order of her books to read on her website. There really isn't a set order that you'd want to read these novels but they do follow a time line and it is a good idea to try to read them in the order they were published. This particular book is one of the first novels in the series.
This particular author tends to stick with the big hulking men for her heros but so far I've really liked all of her heroines. She tries to put real emotion into her books and I think that for the most part she does a great descriptive job. Her sex scenes are a little more steamy than average which can be great for some people but not so great for others. I thought they were mostly tasteful. She does dabble in time travel and the Fae (fairy) idea... which if you don't like than stay away from her books. She keeps it reasonable but it does take a strech of the imagination.
Happy reading!
Excellent.......2007-09-07
This is a book not to miss in your collection of Karen Moning. It is the first of a continued story line and one that I have read twice because its so good. Yes it's a romance novel but it has enough interesting story line to not be overtly sexual. Good Read.
Excellent, unput-downable reading!.......2007-08-08
Karen Moning won the RITA for her stunning book The Highlander's Touch, and this one ranks right up there, I'm sure. Highland laird Drustan MacKelter is given a magical potion to make him sleep forever, unless he's awaked by sunlight and blood (!). The villains tuck him away in a cave deep beneath a Loch, considering no-one will ever find him. Centuries later Gwen Cassidy goes hiking and accidentally falls through a fissure which causes a cave-in. She lands smack onto Drustan's chest, bleeding, surrounded by a nimbus of sunlight. Guess who wakes up, and is rather stunned to discover himself in the 20th century? Gwen, on the other hand, thinks he's a total lunatic, running around in authentic costume with goodness knows how many extremely authentic knives and other lethal instruments hanging off him. He's a Hunk in the first degree, however, and she's come to Scotland to - uh - find a `cherry-picker'. Use your imagination to fill in the gaps here. Drustan appears to be the best candidate to date, so she's not about to lose sight of him just yet, even though he acts like a total loony when faced with ordinary civilization - cars, restaurants, etc. The scene in the clothes shop where he's trying on jeans is hysterical! He considers no man in his right mind would ever ever try to stuff himself into such an instrument of torture. No wonder there's not many children running around, he surmises - the trews have robbed all men of their manhood. He's lustily intrigued by Gwen, but he's also desperate to get back to his own time: he's aware a terrible evil lurks there and his people are in danger. As Gwen gradually comes to the realization that maybe - just maybe - he's not blowing hot air, the story accelerates from an already break-neck pace into a race against time. In a wonderful twist, Drustan has the power to change history, but will he also be able to keep his love? The lovers' dilemma of who-will-stay and who-will-go is poignant, and the resolution most unexpected. This guy must surely win the Hunk Of The Month Award. Go ahead and enjoy the best he-man ever, teamed with a feisty, give-no-quarter heroine.
Highlanders forever.......2007-07-04
Karen Marie Moning has written this series with great love of the Highlanders and their ancient secrets. I love the romance and the humor and would recommend this book to anyone, not just romance fans.

Great beginning, but..........2007-01-06
Great beginning, but I felt like it kind of fell apart after awhile, or swirled down into a dream world.
That doesn't have to be a bad thing, but I felt like it didn't really work in this volume. It started out a very modern, woman-fiction, barely-fantasy-at-all kind of story about an angry, overweight lady whose husband left her for a young blonde. When she finds a talking frog who says "kiss me, I'm a prince," she's like, "No thanks, I'd rather have a talking frog!"
How can you lose with that, right?
But somehow, the later part of the book didn't work for me. It became a lot more about the lady's daughter, choices, and this sort of dream-world with a wicked witch character as the villain.
I just got the feeling Nancy Springer got bored with the book, and sort of wrote the last 2/3 of it in a rush, too fast, and didn't bother re-working it.
I didn't like that feeling.
this book is an off-beat genious wonder.......2003-12-31
I am 21 years old, I picked up the book for the first time about 3 years ago (very attractive book cover) and since then I have not found a better book. I read constantly, it keeps the train rides shorter...but nothing has been more pleasing to me than reading Fair Peril. It is a beautiful, witty, epic, small, and everything in between story!
Buffy (main character) is a fascinating woman, with the acidity of thought that only a divorced, middle aged, slightly overweight, cheated-on, story telling person could have. Yet she manages to give it all to the reader in a way in which she has to be adored, and sympathized with. I personally hate Prentis.
Addie! I love addie! he's lovely in everyway...innocent, and frail, like the boy of my dreams. but frailer even.
And then there's Emily...I think of emily as like the rebellious little sister. I see her and I see all the things that a small femine should have. She's just so great.
Fay is another story...but then again....everything is itself and something else isn't it?
Please read the book...it's cheap as hell and you will enjoy it more than any tome. I promise.
"We don't have princes here. We don't even have Kennedys.".......2003-01-18
Both riotously funny and sweetly touching, _Fair Peril_ is a fun and wonderful fantasy novel. It's set in modern times, in a sort of "Anytown, USA"--where the shopping mall is a portal into Fairyland, and anything can happen.
It all begins when Buffy Murphy discovers a talking frog who claims to be a prince. Buffy is a divorced and overweight woman, down on her luck, who holds down a practical job in a fake food factory and is a storyteller on the side. Hoping a gimmick will make her storytelling more sought-after, she takes the frog home...and has no plans to kiss it and turn it back into a prince. Enter her teenage daughter. When the frog prince and 16-year-old Emily run away together, Buffy has to find them and rescue Emily from the story she's been caught up in. Buffy finds herself in a world where a star-spangled nightgown renders you a wizard, where misspelling your spell can have disastrous results, and where the blue ogres lurking around the corner might be mundane cops, ready to haul you off to the local mental health center. I won't summarize the plot from here, because it would make no sense if I tried to recount it in this space. But it's a fun and wild ride. In the end, Buffy learns that no story is set in stone, and it's never too late to start all over with "once upon a time".
A fairy tale with an adult twist........2002-10-10
I'll be honest, I picked up this book at a used book store while waiting for a friend to finish shopping. I started the first paragraph in the store, bought the book cause I couldn't bear not reading more of it and ended up spending the rest of the day wrapped up in the pages. I loved this book.
The heroine is a women my age (you don't get many of those), and of my build (you never get those) and she ends up saving the day and herself. If you enjoy stories that are a little of the real world with an over-lap of the fantasy, you will love this.
This is the first book of Nancy Springers that I have read, but I can assure you that I will be searching for more of them. She is funny (laugh out loud funny) but also a little pensive and thought provoking. If you're looking for a fairy tale with a little nasty adult twist, don't miss this.
An excellent fantasy novel.......1998-03-25
I had never read anything by this author, but I saw that Marion Zimmer Bradley highly recommended it, so I figured it would be worth a shot. This is an amazing novel. It takes you into a world that is disorderly and full of chaos, and shows you more about the nature of people than you would expect from a fantasy novel. Excellent, heart wrenching at times, and Springer's style of writing makes the whole episode very believeable.
Book Description
Inspired by the revolutionary bestseller Toughlove®, a guide to help parents discipline their children with love and consistency
Toughlove® was an international bestseller and one of the first guidebooks for parents of extremely troubled teens. The Toughlove® Prescription picks up where the million-plus mega-seller left off, helping you discipline your children, who live in a world saturated by cell phones, the Internet, and graphic displays of nudity and violence. Dr. Ron Zodkevitch helps you apply the Toughlove® techniques to more-common problems such as a messy room, smoking, and homework. He also incorporates a new, four-step program for you to reach out to your teens.

Working Out the Tough Issues of Raising a Teen.......2006-09-24
This book helps parents answer tough questions like:
Can you enforce a bedtime on a 15 year old?
What if your child cheats on a test?
Is it OK to read your child's diary?
What do I say if the child asks if I used drugs?
We can't agree on discipline.
Toughlove for Tough Times.......2006-03-02
Dr. Ron's book offers keen insight and understanding into the troubled waters of parent/adolescent interactions. Parents of unruly teens will find many valuable tools and tips to help them build a bridge while still demanding accountability. This is a long overdue followup to the Yorks' pioneering work, and I think will become *the* survival handbook for parents of troubled teens.

Gourmet, scientist, and cookbook writer of endearing prose, Edourad de Pomiane's revolutionary approach to French food and diet of his day involved sane, perceptive simplification--a distinctly modern tactic. Cooking with Pomiane, first published in the 1930s and reissued in the Modern Library Food series, encapsulates Pomiane's debunking methods: away with complicated techniques and elaborate sauces; in their place, find concise formulas that discover the essence of their ingredients and celebrate them in simple preparations. Though Pomiane provided precise, even scientific cooking rationales ("Everyone agrees that [fish] must be served [before] the meat course," he writes, "...but such as meal is far too rich in nitrogenous substances"), he is also a beguiling instructor. "Take a bunch of parsley," he advises, "the size of a bunch of violets." Any reader interested in cooking and its modern history will treasure the book.
Beginning with useful information for the host or hostess (for a dinner party, "one should prepare only one good dish," Pomiane advises sensibly), the book then presents over 300 recipes, arranged by course or type, and "a few drinks." Pomiane's revolutionary approach is embodied in his formula for Noodles with Mushrooms, which requires only noodles, mushrooms, butter, and grated Parmesan. Use good ingredients and you have a feast. Though he includes many, albeit streamlined, recipes from the classic canon, such as Artichauts à la Barigoule (artichokes braised with a ham, bread crumb, and onion stuffing), he also supplies recipes that were unconventional in his day, including Choucroute Salad and Piroshki. Readers will also want to prepare such treats as Mousse au Chocolat (chocolate, sugar, eggs, cream) and Pumpkin Gratin (pumpkin, almonds, sugar, an egg, and macaroons). With an introduction by Elizabeth David, the book provides a rare opportunity to meet and learn from an original cooking master. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
First published in France in the 1930s, Cooking with Pomiane continues to inspire today's chefs with its inventive simplicity. Edouard de Pomiane turned classic French cuisine on its head, stripping away complicated sauces and arcane techniques to reveal the essence of pure, unadorned good cooking. A food scientist, he offers lucid explanations for why food behaves as it does. Read him and the cream in your gratin dauphinois will never separate, your pot au feu will never be stringy, and your choux pastry will puff to astonishing proportions. Pomiane's great accomplishment was to restore confidence to the cook, and joy to the kitchen. Cooking with Pomiane spills over with amusing stories and more than three hundred superb and streamlined recipes; it is as much a delight to read as it is to cook from. This Modern Library edition is published with an Introduction by the renowned food writer Elizabeth David.

magnifique!.......2003-07-24
This is the one cooking book I reach for time and time again. Everything in here turns out fabulously well, and the text is so humorous and engaging, I find myself just reading it for pleasure. One word of warning; it will require some adaptations if you are on a fat free diet, as many of the recipes are loaded with butter and cream. Of course, that's what makes them so delicious!
Try this book, it's the best.
I Smell Something Yummy!.......2001-09-28
This is my favourite cookbook-- or should I say my favourite food cookbook (The Anarchist Cookbook is my fave overall). There are lots of recipes in here for all dishes and occasions- be it a fancy dinner or a not-so-fancy dessert- and the good news is, most of them are of the minimalist tradition, so no complicated procedures or fancy-schmansy ingredients. Just plain old good food, and believe me, if you follow Pomiane's and tips, you'll be cooking like a pro in no time!

This is an absolutely delightful read. I haven't tried any of the (delicious-sounding) recipes yet, but just reading this book was enough to whet my appetite! I particularly enjoyed his many witty asides and poetic turns of phrase. Highly recommended. Also take a look at "Clementine in the Kitchen", another charmer.

M. Memorabilia: Putting a Price on the Priceless Performer........2002-07-02
Beautifully illustrated and indexed a true "must have" for all Marilyn Monroe "afficionadoes" and serious collectors as well.
I truly enjoyed perusing through this book and appreciated how Mr. Kidder gave a thorough "overview" of Miss Monroe's career, "photo modeling" thru her "starlet" years thru her very brief "super stardom". The author also presents a biographical overview of the Stars'life. All in all, really loved this book. Of notable mention,Mr. Kidder's first book, (Marilyn Monroe Collectibles: A Comprehensive Guide to the Memorabilia of an American Legend), co-authored by George Zeno, was their first as well as successful effort on this subject.

Lots of patterns - great value........2006-05-11
Well, this is a big book! More than 300 pages of knitting, crochet and embroidery. Truly, it is three books in one.
Each section begins with a comprehensive set of instructions for that craft. Large drawings show the stitches and other details. The knitting section covered one of my pet peeves - what if I can't get the yarn they use in the pattern? An article gives tips and ideas to make good substitutions. Each pattern has a color photo and sometimes a few. The patterns have summary info at the beginning - skill level, sizes, supplies and tools needed. I have one quibble with the book - the table of contents is very short and doesn't provide a list of the patterns. The patterns are listed in an appendix at the back.
The knitting patterns are varied. All the standards are included- afghans, hats, mittens, scarves, shawls, socks, sweaters and vests. Other patterns include a dog sweater and collar, Ipod holder, purses, wire jewelry, and purses.
I think crochet has become a hot craft, and the authors seem to agree. The crochet patterns are interesting and modern. Even though the arm warmers done in a fuzzy yarn look like hairy arms. And the Santa's stocking is rainbow-striped and has individual toes... I liked all the rest very much. The baby clothes look cute and probably work up quickly. The patterns also include hats, ponchos, purses, sweaters, tops, a backpack, pillow, shawl, and a jacket to name a few. The beach cover-up was stylish, and the crochet trim for a store-bought top was different.
The embroidery instructions are comprehensive. Many types of stitches along with bead embroidery, ribbon embroidery and hardanger are illustrated. Most of the projects are embellishments for pre-made items. They range from elegant to quirky and fun. Embroidered jeans and beaded tops are popular now and both are covered here. Many types of items go under the needle - mittens, napkins, pillows, purses, paper, sweaters, towels, and tote bags. A few of the purses are handmade, with the patterns included. The embroidered greeting card and scrapbook embellishments add dimension to your papercrafts.
The Michaels Book of Needlecrafts - Knitting, Crochet & Embroidery is a very solid and worthwhile book for your library. If you're already involved in one of the crafts, it's a great way to learn the others, while getting a good set of patterns.

COLOR IDEAS.......2007-05-17
The book is okay, but nothing that practical. Took sometime to understand how to use it.
Save your money.......2007-01-19
This book contains 90% color swatches and 10% information. Really, how could anyone feel that they purchased something helpful when it is mostly pages of 20 different colors that one is suppose to rip out and put on one's wall. Swatches are for decorating/paint stores not books, or it should at least indicate this.
its about time! .......2006-08-03
This book is very thorough about principles of color- it has tear out color charts and about every conceivable color combination that will look 'smashing" together. I absolutely love it and i will be using it to decorate my new home- The author has simplified a seemingly complex visionary task to a method that is foolproof for getting that designer look. I would have paid over $ 300.00 for the book to have the information that she supplies and i would like to have more by this author . fabulous! thank you
Book Description
"A ready reference aid and an inspiration to designers
All in all the best book now available on symbols." Library Journal This unparalleled reference represents a major achievement in the field of graphic design. Famed industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss recognized the importance of symbols in communicating more quickly and effectively; for many years he and his staff collected and codified graphic symbols as they are used in all walks of life throughout the world. The result is this "dictionary" of universally used graphic symbols. Henry Dreyfuss designed this sourcebook to be as practical and easy to use as possible by arranging the symbol information within ingeniously devised sections: Basic Symbols represents a concise and highly selective grouping of symbols common to all disciplines (on-off, up-down, etc.). Disciplines provides symbols used in accommodations and travel, agriculture, architecture, business, communications, engineering, photography, sports, safety, traffic controls, and many other areas. Color lists the meanings of each of the colors in various worldwide applications and cultures. Graphic Form displays symbols from all disciplines grouped according to form (squares, circles, arrows, human figures, etc.) creating a unique way to identify a symbol out of context, as well as giving designers a frame of reference for developing new symbols. To make the sourcebook truly universal, the Table of Contents contains translations of each of the section titles and discipline areas into 17 languages in addition to English.
Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2005-09-21
It's a must have if you care for icons. Wish it was hardcover.
Just keep it symbol........2003-09-14
Four stars because a book that is involved with communication does it in such a disappointing way. The cover, text pages, bibliography and index are extremely bland. For instance, the few text pages have a line space between the paragraphs and also an indentation on the first line of each par, the bibliography is set in the same weight of type so punctuation is required, this can nearly be eliminated by using various weights of type to separate the different elements, the twenty-two page index could have been less if it was set in three columns instead of two.
However this is an important book and the symbol content rightly deserves five stars. Henry Dreyfuss started work on this project in the fifties while working for an oil-drilling equipment manufacturer, who wanted some way of communicating with workers in parts of the world where English was uncommon. Two-dimensional illustrations were developed and Dreyfuss slowly expanded the scope of the idea into this book, which presents several thousand in twenty-six categories.
The selection is very comprehensive, pages ninety and ninety-one include hobo signs with one for Cowards Will Give, To Get Rid Of You, or Free Telephone, which looks remarkably like a profile of a turkey. A fascinating four pages show Olympic symbols from the Games of 1948, 64, 68 and 72. I think 1968 are clearly the best, the designer avoided using stylised human forms and presented basic sport elements in a black rounded corner box. Throughout the book, where there is space, Dreyfuss has added sidebars on a variety of topics relating to symbol origins and usage.
To make this book as practical as possible the contents page is in eighteen languages, a good example of why Henry Dreyfuss, apart from being a great industrial designer, was also a person who never lost his humanity.
A Must for any Interactive Designer!.......2000-09-04
This is one of the best books on symbols by one of the best designers of the 20th Century! It includes everything from technical symbols to hobo and astrology signs. If you are an interactive designer this book will prove to be a useful tool for research for icon design.
Symbol Sourcebook.......2000-06-16
I just recently flipped through this book and definitely stopped me from looking for the actually book I was looking for. If you love symbols, this is it. It contains symbols from areas such as medical field to underground symbols used by hobos, which I found pretty interesting. It contains in depth symbolism of colors. Virtually all symbols that you might recognize or not are here. Check it out.
Symbols abound.......2000-05-24
I use Symbol Sourcebook as a bible for interpreting meaning from it's very thorough pages. It is full of insightful and seemingly rare symbols. From engineering to chemistry to any other form of language through symbol this book by Mr. Dreyfuss is astounding. It is my reference for many, many corporate identity projects.

Customer Reviews:
Cute stories to inspire the Christmas spirit!.......2006-12-26
1. The Teacher by Jude Deveraux: Wow - I can't recall a character in any western historical who displays the courage and grit of Kathryn! One can only admire the way she confronted even the hardest of people and stood up for what she believed in. I have a bit of a problem believing that the highly disagreeable Cole made the conversion into a kind and decent man, but I suppose only Kate had the power and charm to tame even the beastliest man.
2. Christmas Magic by Margaret Allison: Margaret Allison is the only author in this anthology with whom I wasn't familiar. I really like her style - the story flowed nicely and the dialogue was realistic and respectful. The theme of reconciliation between an estranged father and daughter is a wonderful illustration of the Christmas spirit, and showed how forgiveness and understanding are keys to inner peace and healing.
3. Jolly Holly by Stef Ann Holm: A magical story about the value of treasures that money cannot buy and the joy that can be found in sharing! The plot and the characters were quite unique, as was the setting, which was a refreshing break from the usual storyline formula of most romances.
4. If Only in my Dream by Mariah Stewart: I have two pet peeves concerning romance novels. One is the use of bickering dialogue representing conflict and sexual tension. On the contrary, this story was so delightful because of the respectful and loving way the characters interacted with each other, and I congratulate the author for brilliantly presenting the story in this manner! These were warm and likable people I admired immensely. My other peeve are conflicts that could easily resolved, or avoided entirely, if the characters simply communicated more openly and clearly with each other. Unfortunately, that was the case in this plot. Still, the story was highly enjoyable and quite relaxing to read, especially to this believer in the lasting qualities of true love between soulmates.
5. White Out by Linda Howard: Linda Howard is known for writing lusty and erotic scenes, so the graphic sex shouldn't have been such a shock to me, except that the previous 4 romances were comparatively sweetly romantic because the sexual aspects were left up to the imagination. I didn't like how the characters were nearly unconscious when they first came together, because it was so careless and animalistic. However, I like how the story opened, describing the lakefront property in such wonderful detail, as though it were a showcase home on HGTV. The blizzard was also described in such remarkable detail that it almost felt as though the storm was swirling around me too! This attention to visual and sensual detail is what makes Linda Howard's brilliant to me, not the gritty sex. This particular story redeemed itself from the off-putting erotica by ending with a dramatic flare of action, drama and mystery-solving.
A failed Chirstmas romance anothology.......2005-12-27
From the back cover:
New York Times bestselling authors Jude Deveraux and Linda Howard are joined by Margaret Allison, Stef Ann Holm, and Mariah Stewart in a delightful treasure of stories that sparkle with "a definite touch of holiday magic" (Philadelphia Inquirer).
"The Teacher" by Jude Deveraux: A spirited Irishwoman comes to a rugged Colorado town to govern a young ruffian and learns a love lesson from the boy's father: there is more to the man than meets the eye...
"Christmas Magic" by Margaret Allison: Home for the holidays, an artists proves opposites can attract--and make sparks--when she falls for an unconventional doctor...
"Jolly Holly" by Stef Ann Hom: A holly berry-picking contest in the California hills brings two determined hearts together for the greatest prize of all: a true and lasting love...
"If Only in My Dreams" by Mariah Stewart: A lively family reunion on a Montana ranch brings on a flurry of memories for a beautiful young writer--and a winter storm that rekindles an old flame...
"White Out" by Linda Howard: In the midst of a blizzard, a snowbound woman offers shelter to a stranger, a man who is an expert at covering his tracks...
And my review:
When I was browsing the book section in my thrift store years ago, I picked up this book, leafed through it, then put it back on the shelf. Years later, I came across another copy of this book, and decided to give it a try. I wish I hadn't wasted my money.
"The Teacher" was the first story by Jude Deveraux that I was actually able to finish, so that's saying something for it. It was quite an interesting story - up until the heroine starts kissing a man she doesn't even know. What do romance authors think this is enjoyable, let alone plausible? Would any of us readers ever start kissing a total stranger? If we did, I think we'd get locked up in a nuthouse!
Also, this was a historical story that didn't state what year it was, which is a pet peeve of mine when it comes to historical stories. How hard is it to give me a year? I did finish this short story, but didn't find it very good. The hero's hellion son did a behavioural about-face waaay too easily, and everything seemed to be resolved without much of a struggle. Two stars.
"Christmas Magic" by Margaret Allison had potential, but didn't live up to it. I didn't see anything unconventional about the hero. And if he's a surgeon (and chief of thoracic surgery, no less), the heroine would just have to face it - there are times when he's just going to get paged and have to leave during important moments. It's one of those hardships the wives of doctors and soldiers have to deal with, and complaining about it won't help. This story never felt fully developed, and I ended up giving up halfway through. One star.
"Jolly Holly" by Stef Ann Holm was another story with lots of potential. The clashes between the leads was interesting, though I found the premise of adults engaging in a holly-berry picking contest kind of silly. Unfortunately, this was a story where I could see every plot twist from a mile away. The romance wasn't very well executed, and I had a lot of trouble connecting to the characters. Two stars, as it started off well.
"If Only In My Dreams" by Mariah Stewart fell back on another romance staple: the Big Misunderstanding. I felt that the author tried to use a rather silly misunderstanding rather than real issues to keep the characters apart. Sorry, but if this had happened to me, I never would have given up so easily on the relationship. I would have phoned the guy and yelled in his ear. Then of course, the truth would have come out and everything would have been resolved. But of course, we can't have people communicating in a romance novel, can we? Also, I felt that the hero was far too easy on his son's bad behavior. If I had been breaking lamps and vases I would have been in big trouble. Does the twin's father say anything to them? Nope! He just takes them out for a walk to wear them out. Doesn't anybody ever disipline their kids anymore? Also, this author was really bad for "head hopping", jumping from his point-of-view to hers and back and forth throughout the scene. Distracting and annoying. One star.
"White Out" by Linda Howard can be summed up in one word: disgusting. Actually, there are other words for it, which include offensive, revolting, repulsive, pornographic.... Basic synopsis: lonely woman takes in man from blizzard, strips him naked, climbs into bed with him to warm him up (who would do this with a stranger who could be an axe murderer?) and wakes up to find him having sex with her before he's even fully awake. Ewww! If I wanted this kind of "entertainment", I could rent a porno movie! (Which is something, of course, that I'd NEVER do!) One star. I've yet to be impressed by anything Linda Howard has written, and this piece of trash put her on my "do not buy" list.
There is not a single story in here worth the money or the time it takes to read it. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
just skip this.......2004-10-13
I agree quite thoroughly with the reviewers who expressed extreme dislike for Linda Howard's "White Out." It was sickening. Some of us read romance for the romance, not for explicit descriptions of sexual relationships which begin before the hero (and I use the term loosely) is even conscious.
As for the rest, Jude Deveraux's hero is a paternalistic town despot. Margaret Allison and Mariah Stewart tell fairly ho-hum stories about creative, artsy types going home and falling in love, one with a (supposedly) unconventional doctor and the other with her first love, with whom she had lost touch through a lame misunderstanding--don't you just hate it when these people don't TALK to each other?
The star goes to Stef Ann Holm for "Jolly Holly"; though not a total classic, this story does introduce a handful of very memorable minor characters, especially an intriguing couple of "elves" named Yule and Tide.
For "White Out" only.......2001-03-26
I only read the Linda Howard story "White Out," so I can't give a review of the others. But, that one alone is great. Yes, the premise of the Price's and Hope's relationship--and fabulous sex--is not something that can be applied to reality. But, so what? The story is still cute, fun, and very sexy. Plus, Howard has a true talent for making almost any scenario plausible with her skilled writing (e.g. anyone read "Son of the Morning"?). If you don't want to buy the anthology, I recommend settling in at Borders with a cup of coffee and reading "White Out" right there. Very Entertaining!
Linda and Jude carry it all...........2000-09-28
Ok, first of all, I personally love Jude and just about everything she writes (notable exceptions would be High Tide and Legend- both of which were poorly written) but, this short story just doesn't make me go "hmmmm.." Maybe because I didn't like Legend I was a tad biased against this story since it picks up where Legend left off. Again, it wasn't as poorly written, but there was just no magic. Likeable, but not memorable.
However, I REALLY liked Linda's little tale. Her tale starts out like so many dates that we have and just choose not to talk about..but, this time, instead of showing the guy the door, we show a little more. The chemistry in this is just phenomenal. And, hey, let's face it..this is why we women read romance novels and especially why we read Linda Howard..THE SEX!! I have never wanted to be a character as bad as I wanted to be that girl. One word describes this tale...GRRRRR. The rest of the stories are fluffy and sweet, but if you want REALLY good dreams, ditch the rest and just read Linda.
Customer Reviews:
Great autobiography by one of the best!!.......2006-03-15
She has always been one of my most favorite entertainers. She is a truly remarkable woman and reading this book reinforced that fact. I enjoyed every page. Well done, Ann-Margret!
Really Good Page Turner.......2006-02-28
This is a really good book well written, flows nicely and great story.
Sparkling... moral & ethical... & soooo talented.......2004-02-19
This review is based on hardcover 1994 publication...
Accomplished actress, entertainer, wife, daughter, mother -- Ann-Margret writes an informative, entertaining autobiographical picture of her life, loves, losses, heartaches, and continued triumphs. Candidly, this performer tells of her successes but is also honest about her bouts with alcohol - and her triumph over the illness - more than once. It is interesting to note pride in her heritage from Valsjobyn, Sweden, her birthplace... with a close and loving relationship with her parents and their immigration to the US.
To read Ann-Margret's autobiography is to cry, laugh, & cheer... reading of her downs but mostly ups, with her loving husband and manager Roger Smith, who battled his own nerve disease to remission, and remained at Ann-Margret's side to support her personally and professionally, through hard times and more good times. The loss of her father to cancer; the death of Elvis Presley; her accidental fall from a platform at a performance in Lake Tahoe and finding the astounding strength and determination to come back to the entertainment world so quickly from so many injuries suffered in that fall... tells of the inner strength, stability, astuteness, professional, unselfish and loving human being that is Ann-Margret, who always keeps her positive focus within reach.
Ann-Margret's career began at an early age; even though a "natural talent", her success came with a lot of very hard work, high standards, and fortitude based on a mannerly upbringing and strong support by her parents, friends and husband Roger Smith. Ann-Margret describes in her bio a close and soulmate relationship within the scope of personal as well as professional essence with legendary Elvis Presley. Her upbeat description and tales of her co-stars, including "Duke" John Wayne; Claudette Colbert; Bette Davis; George Burns; directors, producers, along with many supportive individuals.
Her range of talent is wide -- in song, dance... acting on stage, movie screen and television, along with her comedy performances among which are Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Lucille Ball, and the great George Burns. Acting roles she assumed were highly challenging and to her credit she glowed with each performance, in differing genre delving into in-depth characterizations -- her repertoire includes but not limited to "Bye Bye Birdie", "Tommy", "Streetcar Named Desire", "Carnal Knowledge", "The Two Mrs. Grenvilles".
This reader has always been a fan of both Ann-Margret and husband Roger Smith, ignoring the tabloid garbage... cheering and admiring the fortitude of both of these talented persons and their lasting relationship...
And to Ann-Margret I say... thank you for writing your biography, even though it took me some years to get to reading it among my large collection of books. And, I am so glad I did... I am proud to be a "forever fan" of yours. God bless you.
Too narcissistic for my tastes.......2004-01-09
I had the audiotape version, read by the author, and was surprised at how hokey it sounded, given that she is an actress. I mean, I expected a better reading. Not sure how well it represents her, but the book makes her come across as a bit shallow. I've enjoyed her movies, but found this book a bore.
Boring.......2003-11-22
Some may think that Ann-Margret showed class when writing this but actually it's just boring.
It goes along like a freight train, no depth, substance or insight. Comes across as an extemely vain woman who is manipulated by her manager/husband. Where was the gossip, this is what sells a book, not all the rubbish in this.
Avoid at all costs. Totally void of any depth.
