a charming read.......2007-09-27
This tale of people living in Northern Ireland was charming. Although the ending wrapped up a bit too tidily, loved each character and their lives.
If you have enjoyed the other two books by this author, you will enjoy this one too.
Absolutely loved this book!.......2006-11-16
All of Sharon Owens' book are a delight! I believe The Tavern on Maple Street is my favorite so far. She writes with such charming warmth and humor. I know I've read a good book when I can't bear to put it down and I'm really disappointed when it ends because it's been such a satisfying read. The characters are described in such a way that I feel like I actually know them personally. I get caught up in their lives and problems and adventures, and particularly enjoy the fact that they're in Ireland. Her whimsical illustrations are added fun. If you like Maeve Binchy and Rosamunde Pilcher, you're in for a treat.
Trite and poorly written.......2006-05-23
This book is the literary equivalent of a stale Twinkie. There's a wince-worthy cliche or shopworn turn of phrase (or several)in every paragraph. The dialogue sounds like it was written for a grade-school play. I got stuck reading it on a trip - I went hungry for reading material rather than finishing this irritating book.
Charming third book, .......2006-05-18
I recently discovered Sharon Owens' books, based in Belfast centering on ordinary people's lives. The Tavern on Maple Street opens on the possible destruction of Beaumont's Tavern, a tiny Victorian era tavern tucked away in the heart of Belfast. Jack and Lily Beaumont have run the tavern pretty much the same as it has always been run, drinks and sandwiches. Living and working at the tavern, Lily and Jack are able to remain engrossed in each other as well as their own world, safe from the pulls of outside life. It is a haven for the regulars, and overlooked by the bright young things in search of the newest martini and available men. The city planners give the OK for developer Vincent Halloran to build a big mall, provided he buy out all the businesses on the proposed area, including Beaumont's. Jack and Lily face the end of their magic little world until Lilly decides to see what happens if the tavern moves into the modern world. Facing the pressure of neighboring businesses who sell at fantastic prices and short of finding bones in the yard, it looks as though Beaumont's is going to be sold and torn down. Lily is frantic to find a solution. She hires several barmails and introduces live music and offers craft Saturdays. Suddenly, more of Belfast is arriving at Beaumont's door.....but at what price? Jack is sure Lily has taken on more than she can handle, and secretly Lily is, too! The barmaids bring their own set of problems, Bridget is so accident prone she threatens to bring the tavern's lining quarters down around their ears. Daisy is immetrsed in her school studies and has no patience for Trudy's neurosis and allergies, real of imagined. Marie is so shy that she threatens to fade into the wall. How Jack and Lily manage to keep Beaumont's afloat as they face down Victor and keep all the new help from destroying each other and the tavern is a delightful romp. The real magic in this book is characters who each have a distinct personality and engage the reader. There were mant times in the book I wished I could just give Bridget a swift kick, i was so vexed by her behavior! The regulars rally around and the changes seem to be bringing a new life to the tavern, but is it too late? Jack and Lilly are at last offered a way to save the tavern as well as a option to move back into "real Life" by one of Bridget's accidents. Another real delight!
I couldn't give this book enough stars........2006-05-16
This book is worth 10 stars. I love each of these books. Ms Owens does a fantastic job of building such intense, lovable characters there is no way you could put the book down until complete.
We start out with Lily and Jack who inherited the Tavern on Maple Street. However, a builder wants to come in and tear it all down to build a mall. Lily and Jack decide to go down and flames. They hire four barmaids and host a ton of Christmas parties and a craft make-n-takes. They never had children and haven't really shared each other much with others. Will they make it through and be able to save the tavern, or should they make plans to live elsewhere?
Read and find out! This is a book that will have you to the end!

Aisling Grey is back-and in more trouble than ever. She thought being a courier would be easy. It's not. She thought being a Guardian would come naturally. It doesn't. She thought she could get out of being a wyvern's mate. She can't. And she never thought she'd be irresistible to men. But she is.

Hot Hot Hot.......2007-07-17
I loved it. Aisling Grey's relationship evolves with Drake but the passion stays red hot.
A Great Read.......2007-07-10
This one has a real mystery element to it. It is still the silly fun read you expect from Katie. Her books always leave me wanting more. They are easy to read. This one is no exception. Buy the whole series at once to make life easier.
Not a big fan.......2007-06-23
I am a huge fan of Katie MacAlister's vampire books, but just could not get into the guardian books at all.
Second installment in the series is a winner.......2007-05-10
Aisling, Drake, and Jim are all back, and Aisling is searching for a trainer for her Guardian duties. Romance, drama, and intrigue, as well as the hilarious troubles that Aisling creates by challenging Drake.
Laughed out loud..........2007-03-10
Oh my gosh, keep these coming. I love these books! A very enjoyable read, I find myself laughing out loud and can't put the books down. I enjoy Aisling as much as I enjoy Stephanie Plum (and that is saying a lot for me, since I'm addicted to Stephanie Plum novels, I think I found a new addiction). And the dragons..hot, hot, hot! Katie is definately a favorite author of mine now!

Book Description
1916, in an alternative world. The independent Confederate States of America has gone to the aid of its old ally Britain, and become bogged down in the stalemate on the Western Front. At a Confederate airfield in France, a new pilot reports for duty: Lieutenant Amos Ninekiller, of the independent Cherokee Nation, come to see how the white people wage war. He isn't going to like it... A dark antiwar comedy from the author of JOURNEY TO FUSANG and THE BALLAD OF BILLY BADASS AND THE ROSE OF TURKESTAN, now in print again in this new edition, specially revised and corrected by the author. "THE WILD BLUE AND THE GRAY is a tragicomic alternate look at the first great catastrophe of the twentieth century. Laughter is often the only way to shield ourselves from pain that would otherwise be intolerable. Sanders understands this well--and also that, the more things change, the more they sometimes look the same." --Harry Turtledove "God damn! I liked Sanders' new book! It pushes all the right buttons for me -- a great protagonist, WWI fighter pilots, terrific background, and -- mainly -- a fine story with really clever twists. It was one of those where I just wanted to keep going, though he did choose a satisfying place to stop. THE WILD BLUE AND THE GRAY is an absolutely captivating story by one of the hottest new talents in the business. Subtle, strong, gutsy, humorous -- it's got it all. Watch this man. You won't regret it." -- Roger Zelazny

Strictly Chili, it's All About Chili, that's What it is.......2006-10-12
Strictly Chili is one of ten chili books I refer to when I want to make chili differently than the two recipes I usually use. We have chili a lot in our house and both my Dad and my Mama have their favorite ways of cooking it. I grew up with their recipes and I have documented them in one of my "Amazon So You'd Like to Guides" and I hope you take a look at it. Both recipes are delicious, but when you've had them as often as I've had 'em, you sort of yearn for something a bit different. So, once a week, usually on Saturdays, I break out these ten books and search for a chili recipe I either haven't tried, or one I haven't made in a long time. Of course, like all cooks, I fudge a bit with the ingredients, but not all that much. I like to stick pretty close to the recipes, at least the first few times I make it, so I can get an idea of what the writer/recipe maker had intended.
And let me tell you, you'd be surprised at the subtleties there are in a chili recipe. As they say, no two chile recipes were created equal, but the recipes in Strictly Chili have never let me down. I've got a lot of chili books, have tried a lot of recipes over the years, but the recipes here, like the recipes in my other nine fave books, have been consistently good. You can't go wrong with Strictly Chili.

Great book for locating your favorite football player.......1998-08-24
This book alphabetizes all of the football players and the cards that they are featured on. The only reason that this book did not get 5 stars is becuase they did not list every parallel card (silver, bronze, etc., if you are a card collector, you know what I mean) in the book, when it would not have taken up much more space or time. This would have made the player's list more complete. As far as the book content, the list is very complete and is great for discovering new and unique cards that you might not have known existed. I am looking forward to #2, so I can further update my lists. Good job, Beckett, but please be more complete next time.

Customer Reviews:
Great design idea source!.......2007-07-01
I am an aspiring interior decorator who has bought tons of window treatment idea books as well as countless magazines for window treatment inspiration. This book now ranks #1 among all my resources for design ideas! The pictures are gorgeous, the styles are numerous and the bonus is that not only do the pictures show great window treatment ideas, but the rooms themselves are equally stunning, giving lots of decorating ideas as well. And while this is not a how-to book, it does help you decide what type of treatmens are best for your particular window type. It also helps you decide, for example, how many pleats you should plan for a pleated valance based on your window size. The only caveat I would give is that it includes mostly traditional decor, including traditional window treatments. There are few examples of more modern, clean-lined treatments. But as my style runs mostly to traditional anyway, this does not bother me. Again, a great resource for design ideas for yourself and for your clients!
Your Window Treatment Resource.......2007-04-04
This book is full of ideas and great tips for time-saving steps when creating your new window treatments. Spectacular photography accompanies the brilliant ideas.
good idea book.......2007-02-12
I was hoping for more hands on advice, but it is a great book to get ideas for your windows, with lots of great pictures.
Great ideas, terrific photography.......2007-02-06
I first borrowed this book from our local library, and liked it so much I bought my own. The photos of window treatments in actual rooms make the styles more real than sketches of windows alone. Included are explanations of how the various styles are constructed, and also recommendations for when to use professional installation, 'store-bought' or easy 'do-it-yourself' steps. Practical advice for when to use and when not to use a particular window treatment is really valuable. Whether you like the full multi-layered luxurious treatments, or simple classic coverings, it's all here.
Superb Resource!.......2007-01-13
The treatments in your new book are fantastic! How on earth are you able to come up with such a large amount of photos that don't seem to repeat everything else out there? And I don't see a lot of treatments made from the same old patterns either. Bravo! Thank so much for a book that I can show to my clients without apology for outdated photos or chintzy styles.
Your photos are of quality treatments suitable for the best of homes!

If you just want ideas..........2001-09-01
If you want to get ideas on what type of window treatments are available or what style you like the best, etc, this book is a great resource for you. Pictures are great, too. (This book does not give any instructions on how to make them.) I totally lack creativity but this book really helped me get ideas of what I'd like to make for my brand new house with extra large windows.
Good general info, some good designs, no instructions.......2000-01-08
Good information on types of windows and styles of window treatments, hardware, trims. Each page has sharp color pictures. Some current styles, but some seem slightly dated. Instructions are not provided.

Great Idea Book.......2005-12-07
I really wanted something besides standard drapes in our new home. This book contains a wealth of ideas with photos showing the whole room, not just the window. The colorful photos are quite large (unlike the cramped decorating pictures squeezed into the magazine) and sometimes even a double-page spread.
The photo captions explain the decorator's ideas, use of color, framing a view, etc. plus DESIGN TIPS are scattered through the book.
I found some beautiful ideas for my book room, for the dining room, and for the guest room. The variety shown ensures that no matter what your style preferences are, you'll find something here.

just okay.......2004-03-27
this book is okay -- the projects are very ordinary and the fabric shown is not very designer like. There were some good project ideas but nothing very splashy. Much better books available.
Excellent instructions, fun to read.......2003-07-25
As a former technical writer, I am very critical of most instructional materials. This book, however, contains the best organized, clearest, most thorough, and best illustrated instructions I have ever seen. As an experienced sewer, I was impressed by the many sewing tips that I picked up from this book. The sections on decorative trims and buttons and buttonholes were especially helpful. The book was simply fun to read. The layout is pleasing, and the writing style is casual without being condescending or chatty. The ideas for window treatments are wide-ranging and creative. I originally borrowed this book from the library; now I'm going to buy a copy for myself.

More Splash Than Cash Window Treatments.......2002-10-24
Home decorators from Dunces to Divas will love this book. The treatments are lovely but once again, Ms Babylon has outdone herself on the instructions. This book is packed with details, suggestions, hints, tips, all in easily understood, easy to follow instructions. I've been sewing my own window treatments for years and even I learned many time saving, workroom tips. I loaned my copy to my teenage daughters and they were able to design and complete window treatments for their rooms. This book gave them the tools and the confidence to tackle the project!
Thanks Donna and Victoria for another great hit!

Book Description
Nothing has shaped my life as much as surviving the Pol Pot regime. I am a survivor of the Cambodian holocaust. That’s who I am,” says Haing Ngor. And in his memoir, Survival in the Killing Fields, he tells the gripping and frequently terrifying story of his term in the hell created by the communist Khmer Rouge. Like Dith Pran, the Cambodian doctor and interpreter whom Ngor played in an Oscar-winning performance in The Killing Fields, Ngor lived through the atrocities that the 1984 film portrayed. Like Pran, too, Ngor was a doctor by profession, and he experienced firsthand his country’s wretched descent, under the Khmer Rouge, into senseless brutality, slavery, squalor, starvation, and disease—all of which are recounted in sometimes unimaginable horror in Ngor’s poignant memoir. Since the original publication of this searing personal chronicle, Haing Ngor’s life has ended with his murder, which has never been satisfactorily solved. In an epilogue written especially for this new edition, Ngor’s coauthor, Roger Warner, offers a glimpse into this complex, enigmatic man’s last years—years that he lived “like his country: scarred, and incapable of fully healing.”
Customer Reviews:
Harrowing and hopeful.......2007-02-27
I first spotted this book at a tourist book shop in Phnom Penh and after scanning its pages, I was hooked. It is an immensely absorbing tale, both harrowing and hopeful. I was drawn not only into Dr. Ngor's story but into Dr. Ngor himself. As I kept reading, I felt hungry, exhausted, terrified and sad. But if I wanted it to stop, I simply had to close the book. Not that simple for Dr. Ngor.
I pray that Ngor Haing is now with his Sweet, living the life that was so cruelly denied to them. This book is definitely one of the best I've ever read in my life, and I hope that in your heaven, you can hear me say Thank You, Dr. Ngor.
The best book on Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge.......2007-02-14
If you are interested in reading the memoir of someone who survived the reign of the Khmer Rouge, then I can't reccommend any other book higher. I have read two other books from survivors, but Ngor's book was by far my favourite.
What sets Ngor's book apart from the others that I have read is that Ngor was an adult when the Khmer Rouge took over. His memories are very lucid, and he fully comprehends what is going on around him. He watches his young wife die in his arms, those close to him betray, and everyone around him suffer. There are no high points throughout the entire odysey. Ngor brings you to the senseless and incomprehensible suffering that pervades every aspect of life under the Khmer Rouge.
One element I particularily enjoyed about Ngor's book is the extensive descriptions of Cambodian culture, attitudes and behaviour. Cambodian society (from what I can gather from what I have hitherto studied) is highly formal, with a rather complex series of formality set up for intereaction with others and a rather reserved character in regards to expression of feelings. The most important of which in this context being "kum," which is a sort of bitterness and longing for revenge, that becomes evident in a lot of what is happening. You will leave this read with a feeling of not only being inside of what is happening, but also for the actual mechanisms guiding behaviour.
This is, however, not a pleasant read in the least. The descriptions of the atrocities are beyond anything that I was expecting, and for that reason, I would seriously warn others that this is not for the faint at heart. Luckily, Ngor offers notes at the beginning of graphic chapters so that one can skip over them. You will lose sleep, and I can guarantee you that it makes any of those goofy horror movies like "Hostel" and "Turistas" look like a day at Disneyland. This horror is real, and not far in the past. Being that my normal area of study is Russian history, I have read a lot about the horrors of communism and tyranny, but nothing from the basements of Lyubyanka Prison or Mao Tse Tung's Cultural Revolution comes close to the abominable atrocities of Pol Pot's Cambodia.
Ngor also describes his role in the classic movie, The Killing Fields, as well as his integration of life in America. An afterword by friend Roger Warner ends the book on a particularily haunting and sad note, but rightfully so, none the less.
There are a lot of truely excellent books available by survivors of the Killing Fields, and this is the quintessential starting point for those who wish to learn more.
Your problems are small.......2006-09-14
A very good story. Very honest in presentation. The story telling is excellent. Don't be afraid to read because you think it will make you depressed. There are sad times and the suffering of so many innocent Cambodians can be overwhelming but it is a true story of a time and place that hopefully will cause you to notice world news. This book can put the minor annoyances of life in perspective
An Important Book..........2006-03-21
This book is important for many reasons. First of all, it's important for Americans sitting in their nice, warm, comfortable houses to learn about the nightmare fellow human beings are forced to live through. Second, it's important to learn about how the US allowed such thigns to go on (don't get me wrong, I'm a patriot, but we were wrong not to do anything). And lastly, it's important to learn about the Cambodians themselves and their incredible will to live. This isn't just a tale of blood and gore. It's also about true love that can survive even the most terrifying experiences. And it's about a man who against all odds escaped, but who then went on to do everything in his power to help his countrymen. Read this book! You will not regret it.
Highly Recommended.......2006-01-13
I read this book 2 years ago, and still consider it one of the most compelling and important books I have ever read. Besides being completely absorbed by this man's life and experiences, I learned so much valuable information about Cambodia from it that I wish it was required reading for anyone traveling there.
Blended seamlessly with the narrative you will learn of the history and culture of the Cambodians, the groundwork for the rise of the Khmer Rouge, the horrors and fallacies of life under a Communist regime, and the story of Pol Pot. I also gained an insight into Buddhist thought and daily life in Cambodia, all of which prepared me well for my trip there.
Haing Ngor's life story also helped me understand the damaging psychological consequences endured by the victims of this Holocaust, and of the difficulties Cambodians have had in trying to adjust to life in America. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from this book, and many which can give us a better ability to analyze current international events. If you read no other book about Cambodia, read this one.

A Classic.......2006-09-16
I was drawn into this book after first viewings of the film "The Killing Fields." At the time, I was unaware of a lot of the background to many of the events depicted onscreen, and was looking for something a bit more detailed.
As it turned out, this book was something far greater than that, on a par with the writings of Primo Levi, or Elie Wiesel as a depiction of survival amid the most grotesque extremes in ideological depravity humanity could conjure up. Through survival, later stardom and human rights work, Dr. Ngor became (and posthumously remains) one of the great human rights educators of our time.
In this eloquent autobiography, he also accomplishes something else - vivid and affectionate portrayals of Cambodian culture (pre-revolution), and a detailed description of the slide into civil war and the anarchic chaos of Phnom Penh immediately before the fall.
And he also crafts a love story; a memorable and majestic one, of a romance that he attempted to nourish in spite of the societal upheaval occuring around him and his wife. The detail in his descriptions of family are affectionate, and also written with a rare clarity - for this, among many other reasons, this book is a classic.

Haing Ngor Review.......2002-02-20
What a great story of determination and power. The irony of it all was, that, after all the suffering he went through, he died because of someone trying to steal his watch.
The Khmer Rouge seemed to be illeterates governing a country, and the result wasn't good. I cannot believe they inflicted the pain they did on their very own race. In the 20th century, creating an equal society was UNREAL. The Khmer Rouge, some men, most of them teenagers with guns, did not realise this. Even more surprisingly, as strict as the Khmer Rouge were, the Khmer officials got as much food and commodities as they wanted, while they fed the rest of cambodia a watery rice.
The ending left me thinking, especially about his niece Sophia. Haing Ngor, had lost everything by then, but gained fame. Which really at the time, wasn't much to him. I recommend the reader to buy this book as not only is it interesting and very hard to put the book down once you start, but its historical accuracy and the amazing events described are unbelievable. Anyone over the age of 16 who reads this book will love it, and for a variety of reasons.

A man of extraordinary courage.......2000-11-13
This is an outstanding portrait of a man who survived the barbaric reign of terror of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Anyone who has seen the movie "The Killing Fields" has a cursory understanding of the Khmer Rouge and their attempt to transform Cambodian society during their control of the country from 1975 to 1979. However, this film omitted most of the astounding atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge as anyone who has visited Tuol Sleng S-21 in Phnom Penh (as I have) can tell you. In this book Dr. Ngor relates his horrifying experiences of life under the Khmer Rouge in detail and in the process educates the reader as to just how horrible an existence it really was.
This book is remarkable because of the detail related by Dr. Ngor and the personal nature of its content. Many Cambodians to this day will not talk about his period in their lives. For many, the mental and physical abuse they suffered during this period was too painful to re-live ever again. As I read this book, I could not help but wonder how Dr. Ngor was able to keep himself together.
Dr. Ngor effectively puts the period of Khmer Rouge rule in historical context by explaining the historical events and forces which led to their capture of the country. These events and forces included the People's Republic of China, North Vietnam, the Vietnam War, the United States, and of course, the C.I.A.
I admire Dr. Ngor for his extraordinary courage, and I regret that I did not have the opportunity to meet him during his lifetime. May he rest in peace.
A Harrowing Autobiography.......2000-08-25
Dr.Ngor appeared as an actor in THE KILLING FIELDS playing Dith Pran, a man who sufferred greatly at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. Ngor's own true life story, though, was much more horrific. He was starved and tortured repeatedly during the dreadful Cambodian "Year Zero," while confined in a Khmer Rouge concentration camp. If you think that you have troubles, read this book and be humbled.

One of the Greatest Stories of Human Survival and Triumph.......2004-06-29
Enter into the compelling story of a truly remarkable man, Haing Ngor, living through the Cambodian holocost of the late 1970's under the Khmer Rouge. Be prepared, however, for some of the most gruesome torture that a man could suffer - both physically and mentally. If you have any heart at all, you will be changed by this book.
The story begins with a history of Haing's early life in a peaceful Cambodian existence that would be no more. You see a life that is transformed into that of a frial, hungry, tortured and battered peasant. He has everything physically and materially stripped away from him and only his wife to live for. And the story gets even worse. But, through it all, this man clings to hope and a faith in his God that defies all sense reason.
The story does not end painfully. You will see how this one man's deep scars and loss literally transform him into something greater than what he began as. It is not an easy read, but a very compelling one.
Engrossing, deeply disturbing, yet inspiring..........2004-03-13
I'm sorry that it took me so long to find this book, partially because the book is actually entitled "SURVIVING the Killing Fields: The Cambodian Odyssey of Haing S. Ngor" (and after all this time it took only a few days to read it). Aside from that, it's probably the most intense memoir about life under the Khmer Rouge. Also gives thorough insight into the social and political maze that led led to Pol Pot's reign of terror, and what happened to Cambodia afterwards. Ngor also told not only the *deeply* disturbing details of his life as a war slave, but also the difficulties of starting a new life in America. In addition, he clearly portrayed the bizarro-ness of life as a celebrity, as opposed to the life he lived in his homeland. The reader gets a real sense of the isolation he must have felt, even after his successes in America. All this, along with his spiritual beliefs in karma, which helped him explain some of the madness, make this a beautiful and haunting story. By the way, reading this will make you want to see 'The Killing Fields' again, just to see his performance one more time. It's clear that this memoir served in part as a therapeutic device for him personally, but it's also a truly inspiring book for anyone to read. Reading about his journey was weirdly prophetic, bittersweet and sad because ten years after this book was published, Ngor was killed in a senseless act of violence in L.A.
What men must suffer.......2001-10-31
When I read this book sometime back, I was reading it just to read.As I got into the book I found it hard to put down. I cried, I got angry,I hated HATE. I lost two brothers in this mess! Whose loss is greater. Are we not all equal? What these people went through just to survive was dispicable. We take advantage of life! I fell in love with Haing Ngor, I wish I could have met him and hugged his neck. Not in a sexual way, but as a loving sister. This was the most precious kind of man. He gave of himself in a way we should all be doing. What he went through we could only imagine. To watch babies be ripped out of the wombs of women and to go from rich to poor, to watch your world crumble before your eyes and still have love for your fellow man. I have a respect for all life, we all need to open our eyes and look around. Life is a blessing and we should count ours. I love my country, and our people, but that doesn't mean I can't love others to. Haing S. Ngor was a great man who gave for all countries, and all men. He had a heart of gold. May God forgive us all for the Hate we hold.
how can one do anything but cry?.......2001-04-11
This book was my first exposure to what had happened in Cambodia. I saw a man go through a typical childhood for his class abnd become a doctor and meet the woman of his dreams. His life was perfect. Then on April 17,1975 it all came crashing down. He and the rest of his family were plunged into some of the worst conditions to ever exist in history. He survived almost his whole family. Then, he had the courage to show the whole world what had happened to his people. Sadly, this man was killed in a "random" murder in his home in LA. We promised the survivors of the Holocaust that we'd never let it happen again, but we did in Cambodia. Read this book and see why again we must try and keep it from happening ever again.

Ngor survived the Killing Fields, but not the mean streets of Los Angeles.......2005-12-19
*****
I just wanted to point out this irony for those who aren't familiar with the case. Several years after he made the movie The Killing Fields Ngor was fatally shot in a robbery attempt by some gang members outside his Los Angeles home.
This is an excellent book by a very well educated man who managed to survive the horrors of the killing fields of Cheong Ek. Ngor was an ethnic Chinese Cambodian just beginning his surgical career when the Khmer Rouge rebels marched into Phnom Penh and drove all the "evil city dwellers" into the countryside to be "re-educated." He was also newly married to Huey, a teacher.
Throughout the book Ngor gives insights and political background to help understand the situation. He also underscores some of the prejudices faced by ethnic Chinese and Vietnamese citizens of Cambodia. He also highlights the difficulties that many Cambodians had resettling in America after the war.
I had the privilege of visiting Phnom Penh and seeing the killing fields of Cheong Ek and the "interrogation center" of Tuoel Sleng. The city impressed me as a small place, perhaps due to the Khmer Rouge genocide attempt. So, I couldn't help wondering how he managed to survive by hiding his identity. I don't want to cast aspersions. After all, I have been fortunate in that I never had to endure near starvation or being forced to slave for some sickly surreal dictatorship. The part of the book that was most memorable and disturbing to me was his wife's death while trying to deliver their first child. Huey experiences serious labor complications, perhaps due to being nearly worked and starved to death. All through the book he refers to Huey as the love of his life. Yet, for some reason, Ngor just sits there and debates whether or not to perform the necessary cesarean section. He debates the outcome of saving the lives of his wife and pre-partum child versus possibly exposing his medical background. She dies while he is trying to make up his mind. This indifference haunted me more than the Khmer Rouge horrors.

This book's subject matter was without doubt the most harrowing that I have ever read. I was amazed at the tenacity with which Hiang S. Ngor managed to cling to life through the most horrifying circumstances imaginable. However dispite this, it remains one of the most life afirming pieces of work which I have had the privaledge to read.
