Book Description
Jacob Green doesn't mean to disappoint his father, but he can't help thinking the most unthinkable (and very funny) thoughts about public-school humiliation, Hebrew-school disinclination, and in-home sex education (with the live-in nanny!). If only his mother hadn't started college at thirty-six (and fallen for her psychology professor). If only he were more like his rebellious older brother (suspended from Hebrew school for drawing the rabbi in a threesome with a lobster and a pig). If only Jacob could confront his overbearing father and tell him he doesn't want to sing in synagogue, attend est classes, write the perfect thank-you note, or even live in the same house with Abram Green. But, of course, he can't. That would be unthinkable.

If you liked Wonder Years, you'll like this novel.......2007-07-12
Oh! Oh! Oh! I so enjoyed this book. Picture the Wonder Years, except it takes place in the 1970's and it's a Jewish family. The trials and tribulations of a young boy coming of age that lives under the roof of an overbearing father in which he can never stand up to his expectations. Jacob has an older brother that is quite the rebel. So, this leaves Jacob as being his father's hope for the perfect son. The unthinkable thoughts that jacob manifests in order to cope with all the pressure are absolutely hilarious. There is some mature sexual content and foul language in this book. I'd like to see a sequal to this book and see what else is next for Jacob.
This book will make you laugh and cry.......2007-05-18
Jacob Green shares his thoughts about growing up in a Jewish family trying its best. His rare gift of being able to read Hebrew makes up for other weaknesses, one of them: poor spelling skills. Occasional typoes in the novel, however, hint at the fact that it can't be entirely fictional, which renders the protagonist and/or author even more endearing.
Especially worth reading if you are a Braff-fan and want an image of 6-year-old Zach (alias Gabe) in a tiny tux. The humor is very SCRUBS-like, following the narrator's trail of thoughts, which mingles the plot with the Unthinkable. At any rate, a must-read.
The Unthinkable Thoughts of Jacob Green.......2007-03-11
A great read. The story centers around the relationship between a teen boy and his domineering father. The emotions leap out from the page and one gets the sense that this writer has walked in his characters' shoes. We root for the boy and his dad and his older brother as they sort through the muddle of growing up together as a family. I have a 16 year old boy that is a reluctant reader and he sped through this book in two nights (as have I)and we have both passed it on to other readers. The language and situations are in keeping with an older teen's life, you may want to read first before giving to younger readers. I can't recommend this book highly enough for mature readers, it captures the sweetness and sadness and funny ackwardness of being a teen boy.
How Old Are You?.......2007-01-17
I bought this book whe I was in 7th grade because it was in the recommend list that I got from a local newspaper. Well, I thought that it had some mature content to be included in a middle school book list.
Although it is a pretty nice book in whole, it has lots of sexual references tht one may not recommend to a twelve-year old.
Daughter loved it........2006-12-13
I purchased this book for my 15 year old daughter and she had it read in two days. She totally loved it. I would highly recommend to anyone.

OK.....but not great.......2007-08-10
This is my 2nd Moning. Overall, I enjoyed this book but I would not read it again. I found the heroine annoying and the hero overdone. I get it he is ...dark and sexy...I'm not going to forget from one page to the next. I will probably try another of her books before I give up. I love romance novels but this really just read like pure fantasy.
Dark Highlander - Highlander Series.......2007-08-09
In this book, KMM has created the man of many women's dreams. Dageus is the bad boy that the good girls want to convert. The entire book was amazing (as the rest of the series) and the darker tones in the book set off her characters nicely. If you get tired of the same old shiny bright heroes, this is the book for you. Dageus is dark, hot, sensual, and deeply complex. This complexity helps this book stand out a bit above the rest... highly recommended.
Heartless Druid on the run from himself!.......2007-05-21
This is the story of a Scottish Druid from the 16th century who falls in love in the 21st century. Sound familiar?
This book is the direct sequel to Kiss of the Highlander, and unlike others in Moning's Highlander series, really should be read in tandem with the previous book. Otherwise you can't fully engage with the story, with the character or his situation. Unfortunately when you do that, you'll easily see the parallel and repetetive plot devices that may make the story seem disappointingly formulaic.
What makes this story different from others that Ms. Moning has written, and a powerful story in its own right, is the level of conflict with the dark Druids who are foretold to enter the mind of any Druid who travels through time for his own personal reasons (abuses his power). Drageus has done this forbidden act in a self-less way, to preserve the life and love of his dear brother (and you would only resonnate with that part of the story if you read 'Kiss'). The story jumps right in shortly after Kiss left off, with the two brothers already in communication over his situtation, and Drageus struggling with the Dark Druids over his own soul. The author doesn't try to build his character, the way a novel normally starts - he seems like a heartless bastard, he doesn't love anyone, save his family members, and has firmly given up on that aspect of his life, when he meets Chloe in a very funny scene.
The love story follows a similar vein as Kiss of the Highlander, in which Chloe must fight for her love with Dageus, and go backwards in time with him. But the ultimate struggle in this story is the hero's (unlike Kiss where it was the heroine who had to fight for her love). Dageus must prove himself and demonstrate strength of character, and so by the end of the book it is hard not to have fallen in love with this powerfully sexy and charismatic man. ;-)
Enjoy this story! And enjoy the return of some characters that we came to love in Kiss of the Highlander: Silvan, Nell, Drustan, and Gwen. How often do we read a book and wish it could never end? Dark Highlander gives you a chance to continue to enjoy a great story, and provides a sequel that is just as powerful a story.
Dissapointed with this one..........2007-04-11
In this book about Adam Black, I found myself dissapointed and surprised by the lack of consistency of Adam's character compared to the other Highlander books that he appeared in. He was positively horrid in the past books and down right hateable. I felt that his character as that hateable fairy added to the last books and made you understand why is son didn't want anything much to do with him in "The Highlander's Touch". His lightening fast change of character in this book was just too unbelievable to me. I couldn't even finish due to the fact that it just wasn't even ficticiously believable as Moning's past books have been. Oh well, you can't please everyone. I'm glad that someone enjoyed it. I do look forward to more about the MacKeltar brothers in the future. Pleas don't wait to long to pick up the Highlander series again, Ms. Moning. Thanks!
Another MacKeltar Driud...........2007-04-07
Dark Archangel.Erotic.Gorgeous.Undeniably Sensual. D-A-E-G-U-S. Need I say more ? You will be completely captivated by this book. Karen Moning does an outstanding job writing this romance novel of Drustan's twin, the dark druid brother, Daegus. Hurry and buy this one before it is no longer available. A definite keeper !!!
Customer Reviews:
The Dark Highlander.......2004-10-17
This time-travel romance novel features Daegus MacKelter, a handsome 16th century Scotsman whose soul has been taken over by the spirits of 13 ancient and evil druids. While searching for a way to free himself from this curse, Daegus time travels to modern-day New York where he meets Chloe Zanders. A student of antiquities, Chloe just might be able to help him find the ancient text that will rid him of the 13 spirits. But battling the druids is a dangerous business, and Daegus and Chloe are more than a little bit distracted by the undeniable sexual tension that throbs between them... This is a sequel to "Kiss of the Highlander" and is a very good read.

musical companion to Horace Kephart's Our Southern Highlande.......2001-10-09
by: Murphy Henry for Bluegrass Unlimited
First, the cast of players: Peter Rowan, Tim O'Brien, Scott
Huffman, Craig Smith, Rickie Simpkins, Jack Lawrence, and
Tony Williamson. These guys are the heart of this CD. But
Daniel Gore, who composed all but two of the songs, is the
soul of this most unusual recording even though he plays
mandolin on just three numbers. "Ways That Are Dark" is
described as a "musical companion to Horace Kephart's Our
Southern Highlanders, a book first published in 1913. Kephart
wrote stories about the mountain folk who lived in the North
Carolina highlands, using the words and expressions of the
people themselves. When Daniel Gore read the book, "every
story sounded like a song." So, he set out composing words
and music to some of the stories. Like Kephart, Gore speckles
his songs with unusual mountain words and phrases, for
which he thoughtfully provides definitions. The surprise is
that Gore was able to transform these songs into a successful
bluegrass CD. There are two reasons for this: the songs are
extremely well-crafted, and Gore chose some of the best
team players in the business to bring these songs to life.
Compacting a story into a song is not an easy task. Making
the song fit the bluegrass style is even harder. Daniel Gore is
a master at both. As a songwriter, his use of a chorus is
brilliant (and bluegrassy). While the verses provide often
complicated details of the story, the chorus gives you the
story's essence and a musical resting place. However, if the
musicians had been less talented, these songs could have
withered on the vine. Craig Smith provides a tasteful tour de
force in how to play the melody of a song Scruggs style.
Peter Rowan is in his element singing "Ways That Are Dark"
and the "Killing of Hol Rose," which echo some of his own
fine story songs. Jim Watson and Scott Huffman, with their
down-home accents, are completely at ease with the North
Carolina dialect and never make old-time mountain words
such as "cheer" ("chair"), "hyar" ("here") and "spile" ("spoil")
sound forced or disrespectful.
This unique CD is for you folks who appreciate the art of
storytelling in song and for all who like well-played bluegrass
music. I, for one, can't wait to read the book. (Elephant Rock
Records, P.O. Box 20041, Spokane, Wa. 99204) MH

Extroardinarily Depressing.......2006-03-28
K. Alease White's second novel, "Born of Evil Born to Woe", certainly lives up to its name. While her writing and characterization has improved since the first novel in the series ("The Jewel of Tamar"), the tale is so tragic and heart wrenching that you'll wish you had never read it; everything good and happy found in the first novel is cruelly stripped away. I had hoped that this book would focus more on the dynamics between Tsujataha and Sillara, but instead, it wound the reader through seperate paths of misfortune and heartbreak. If you were a fan of her BGII mod, this book will ruin it for you (and does not fit with that timeline, regardless). If you were a fan of her first book, and are hoping for a happy ending, you will not find it. In sum, the high cost, amaturish writting, and utterly depressing story makes this novel one that you can easily pass over.
better than the first.......2003-07-08
I've read them both, "The Jewel of Tamar" and "Born of Evil, Born to Woe," and though the first one is good, the second one is much better. "Born of Evil" is the conclusion of the epic tale of Sillara and Tsujatha. You'll be surprised at what happens! Don't wait to dive back into the rich world of Gilalion.
Book Description
Botox injections-containing purified protein derived from the botu-lism toxin-have become America's most fre-quently per-formed aes-thetic medical procedure. And with FDA approval for cos-metic applications just announced, Botox use-and demand for information about the procedure-is poised to explode. The Botox Book is a compre-hensive guide to the injections, answering questions such as: -How long will the effects last? -Will my face 'freeze?' -Does it hurt? -Will I still be able to make expressions? Dr. Michael Kane, M.D., who pioneered the use of Botox in cos-metic procedures, explains innovative methods of us-ing Botox on necks and chins as well as brows and foreheads to put off a full face-lift-or avoid one altogether. He also gives readers all over the country the crucial information and tools they need to find a doctor in their area who has been properly trained in the use of Botox. The Botox Book is the single best resource for anyone contemplating smoothing facial wrinkles with this age-defying technique.

INSIGHT FROM ANOTHER PRACTITIONER.......2005-07-18
I am a RN, ANS (Aesthetic Nurse Specialist) who performs Botox injections. I bought this book to have in the waiting room for patient education and, naturally, read it myself to review the content and check factual statements before making it available to my patients. This book is FABULOUS, and much better than another book I purchased, ("Botox", by Dr. Ron Shelton). Dr. Kane presents the information in an an easy to understand style, and his expertise and knowlege shine through on every page. Unlike another reviewer, I didn't find his book at all self-promoting. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this to anyone as the ONLY book you need to buy if you wish to understand more about Botox.
Changed my perspective completely!!!.......2002-10-17
Although I wear makeup and do focus on my appearance, I have never thought that I would "buy into" any kind of plastic surgury - although I have to admit that as a woman over forty I have been a bit curious. I came across this book by accident while I was looking for a book on excercise and starting thumbing through it, just to see what the fuss was about. When I saw the before and after pictures - wow! And they aren't of models or beautiful people -- just everyday people like you see anywhere. Of course, I bought the book and read it cover to cover. The author speaks plainly - no fancy medical terms or hollywood buzz-words. It was like having him in your living room explaining how everything works personally, one-on-one. I'm not quite ready to make an appointment with my local doctor yet, but don't be surprised if you see me with visibly less wrinkles come Christmas!! This book is really great!
Wrinkle-free vs Movement Dystonia-free.......2002-09-18
How empowering !
A full length feature on Botox and it's use to 'reverse wrinkles'.
Anyone interested in knowing that Botox has been used to successfully treat debilitating neurologic movement disorders such as DYSTONIA, spasticity etc. ?
Are we such a vain society that we are willing to acknowledge a wrinkle-free society yet remain unaware of the benefits this toxin has in allowing others to regain voluntary muscle control and movement ?
Temporarily fixed...with Botox..enough to write without abnormal movements..but not wrinkle-free...
Forget the rest this is the Botox bible!.......2002-09-06
Dr. Kane conveys his vast knowledge of everything to do with botox with such clarity that upon completeing the book the reader has every question answered. Being a public speaker, I know that a person understands a subject top the extent to which they can teach it. Dr. Kane has been a student of "His" breakthrough process for over a decade and you will agree that there isn't anyone on the planet who knows more about Botox. There are more books and information coming out everyday by people who are trying to cash in on this rapidly growing field but make sure you read this one! Some people like to read books by skipping around. I think it's best to let Dr. Kane take you through step by step his way, so you can truly benefit from his expertise. I'm sure you will agree, even if you aren't planning on using Botox, it's a fascinating read!
The Best Botox Book You'll Ever Read.......2002-09-05
This book explains it all. It sorts out all the bits and pieces one has heard about this wonderful new technique. A technique which enables us to at least slow down the aging clock if not turn it back just a subtle bit at a time! I now feel confident enough to make that phone call to Dr. Kane and get started! Thank you Dr.Kane!

If I had to limit myself to one cookbook, this would be it........1999-02-01
The nutritional information provided is invaluable, the recipes are easy and taste fabulous, and the organizational style is intuitive. I paid my library $60 so I could keep this book, and it was worth it. $16 is a paltry sum that I would pay in a heartbeat. This book would make a good gift, for my unskilled and unhealthconscious relatives.
One of the best!.......1998-08-25
I collect cookbooks and this is one of my favorites. All of the recipes are quick to prepare and don't require a lot of ingredients. Hinman does a wonderful job of creating delicious recipes with a minimum of fuss. This is one of the few cookbooks that I own (and I own a lot!) that I constantly reach for when I don't want to spend a lot of time searching for something tasty to prepare because I know it never lets me down. My favorite recipe is Baked ziti goes Southwest.

slim guide.......2006-05-20
I have several price guides for stuff as it is part of being a collector. I have to say that this is a slim guide. The problem with it is the huge amount of comics covered in it. Their prices do not match Overstreet's and therefore this guide is lacking. There is almost no mention of horror movies promotional items. A good guide for horror toys but they promised so much more. Skip it and look for something better. Sorry.
Tomarts Definitive Guide To Horror Collectibles.......2005-09-11
This is probably one the most informative guide to anything and everthing horror that has been produced in the last 25 years. From everything to movieposters to memorabilia, Tomarts Guide to Horror is a must have for every horror fan. With full color pages how could anyone pass this up. I strongly recomend that if you buy horror movies regularly, you should definitely give this book a try.
Pretty Cool and One of a kind!.......2005-03-16
I am a Freddy Krueger nut and I have all kind of junk collected from all over the place. This is a very concise guide with lots of pictures of almost all the items in it. For awhile it was my checklist of what I hadn't gotten a hold of yet. I love this and keep it close to my collection. It also made me aware of all of the other monster items that are out there in the horror genre. This book covers everything from classic movie monsters (nosferatu, Frankenstein,) to the newest sideshow and mcfarlane releases. I just hope they release a second edition soon to keep up with the new booming market of horror collectibles!

$19.95 gatefold paper * 1-58685-255-8 * April 8 1/2 x 10 in, 160 pp, 140 Color Photographs, 30 Black & White Photographs, Rights: W, Design Now in paperback, Mexican Country Style is the classic that helped launch the popular Mexican design revival. Authors Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr navigated coastal villages and old colonial mining towns by bus and burro, bumping down narrow cobblestone streets in search of simple and utilitarian elements like country tables, workbenches, storage trunks, corral gates, and heavy old doors. Intrigued by the diversity they encountered, the authors documented the wide variety in style, design, and shape of each object they encountered. Weathered coffee mortars, milking stools shaped like animals, and sculptured sugar molds reflect a rich local history as well as the ingenuity of the hands that crafted them. Mexican Country Style is the result of those fascinating journeys and boundless discoveries, a celebration of a rugged, romantic beauty and magical antiquity that continues to make its way into the contemporary interiors, gardens, and commercial settings across the country. Award-winning authors Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr have been at the forefront of the Mexican design movement for over twenty-five years as interior designers and antiques dealers. Their Mexican design book series includes six titles: Mexican Country Style, The New Hacienda, Casa Adobe, Adobe Details, Casa Yucatan, and Mexican Details. Based in Austin, Texas, Carr and Witynski are the owners of Texture Antiques, an interior design firm and gallery specializing in hacienda style, Mexican colonial furniture, and architectural elements. Their design work has been featured in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, and dozens of other magazines and newspapers. Individually, Witynski photographs homes and gardens for national publications and Carr is a hacienda consultant and furniture designer.

Mexican Country Style.......2005-09-26
Nice book, but more of a reference book than help in design.
An Interesting read with subtle photographs .......2005-08-14
I was looking for a coffee table type, picture book to flip through for inspiration for a "themed" project. This book has beautiful, quite subtle, photographic illustrations. Not as over the top as I had thought I wanted. But it is the writing of the authors that delight! Once I settled down and read the text I realised that it had a lot to teach me. A thoughtfully written and illustrated book which has positively influenced me and exceeded my initial expectations!
Mexican Country Stlye.......2003-05-26
Mexican Country Style was received as a a Christmas gift in December, 2000. Originally used as a "coffee-table" book, once I started to read the descriptions with each photograph I was hooked. Not only will you be able to navigate the architectural terminology like a pro, you will also get a glimpse of the past as only a tourist does when he travels with a guide from the area. Joe and Karen's personal travels' are documented with breathtaking color photos and detailed accounts of their visits into the heart of Mexico. Once you begin reading the book, you will not want to put it down until the very last page!! Mexican Country Style is a great read and an educational journey for the soul.
The definitive book on Mexican country decor!.......2000-05-05
Beautifully photographed with a pallete of colors that invite you to decorate a small space or an entire home. Mexican Country Style is the definitive volume for those of us who seek southwestern/south of the border interior design, furnishings and accessories. Sumptuous photos that invite you to sit down with a margarita and explore this comfort feel decorating style. Authors, Witynski and Carr, have an enthusiastic love and flare for this style decorating and this book showcases their skills.
A Stylish Presentation on Style.......1999-12-15
With the proliferation of websites offering Mexican furniture, it has become difficult to tell the real from the ersatz - and especially when it comes to antique furniture, and in the colonial style. The authors have taken all of the doubt out of the search process through an amazing inventory of furniture, accessories, and hints for discovering provenance. It's a must-read for those considering furnishing and decorating their homes in the Mexican style.
It is also an important companion volume to Mexicolor; and to those years-ago titles published by Architectural Publishing.
For the would-be the hunter of these pieces, however, this book makes one fact quite clear. The treasure troves are to be found outside the major Mexican cities, out in the provinces. But with the skills to be learned in this book, the search will be more rewarding.
Book Description
The folksongs of Texas's Mexican population pulsate with the lives of folk heroes, gringos, smugglers, generals, jailbirds, and beautiful women. In his cancionero, or songbook, Américo Paredes presents sixty-six of these songs in bilingual text--along with their music, notes on tempo and performance, and discography. Manuel Peña's new foreword situates these songs within the main currents of Mexican American music.

Inspiration.......2007-07-20
I always enjoy when this book comes out. It is always chock full of logos that encompass many different design styles by some of the leading design firms in the country. After looking through this, I feel the design juices flowing and inspiration comes easy.
quantity, not quality.......2007-07-10
I recently ordered this book for our advertising agency. At a previous job, I had often used the first Big Book of Logos (white background on cover) as a reference for inspiration and looked forward to having a similar resource at this job. I ordered version 4 since I had so thoroughly used version 1 and wanted to see some new logos. Indeed, it turned out to be a big, fat book of logos, very similar to version 1. However, I was disappointed by the lackluster quality of some of the work included. This may be due in part to my eye as a designer improving since I was first dazzled by version 1 freshly out of college, but I think the more likely explanation is that the overall logo quality of version 4 is inferior to version 1. That being said, it's still a great resource to look through to get the juices flowing and to find ideas for different treatments and I will likely continue to reference it often.
Not that strong..........2006-10-29
I was actually really disappointed with this book. With as many good reviews as it got, I was very excited at the prospect of buying it. I (thankfully) went to the store to review it before purchasing. Yes, there are a lot of logos to glean ideas from, but most of the logos presented are weak and really could have been simplified or refined more. Two books of much stronger logos (which I bought instead of this) are Logos: From North to South America by Pedro Guitton, and LogoLounge: 2,000 International Identities by Leading Designers by Bill Gardner and Catharine Fishel.
Logo? Logo!.......2006-03-22
We can all use some inspiration, especially when it comes to logo design. If you are tired of your own doodles and your garbage can is starting to fill up with crumbled paper - look no further - David E. Carter's The Big Book of Logos 4 is the right vehicle to jumpstart your tired grey matter. If you are a designer or even the one who would hire a designer to create your logo, this book is a great source of inspiration. It features hundreds of examples from all walks of life and business, product and service. And since logos in many cases are used for more than just a business card and letterhead, the most interesting thing for me was, that the book is also interspersed with many real life product examples: logos come alive on package designs for energy drinks, soap, snacks, wine, vodka, shrimps, coffee, or you see them end up as billboards for bars, coffee houses and corporations, and we see examples where they cross over to merchandise and websites. It reminds us: know what you design for - logos have to be versatile and have to work for many media. Looking through this book, I'm often fascinated by the smart, effective and often simple solutions a designer has come up with and yet everybody who designs logos knows that we can sometimes be so close but walk in circles to get "It" right. That's when The Big Book of Logos 4 comes in handy. It gives our spent visual juices some greatly needed visual oasis. Get lost, be overwhelmed, by the cheer amount of logos and let them revive your senses. Feel inspired, stimulated and finally motivated. If you are like me, you may be surprised to find yourself think "I can do that!" - and then get that crumbled paper back out of the garbage!
Great Gift.......2006-02-15
I got this book as a Valentine's Gift! And I'm thrilled because I've been wanting it for a while. It has one of my logos published in it! Yeah! (you should buy it!)
Like any other logo book, it provides all sorts of great inspiration for your own creations. It's also quite sturdy and will hold well as a bookend to house all your other design books! :o)

Customer Reviews:
Great logos, shame about the book........2004-02-04
With 2500 logos, mostly eight to a page, well printed on good paper this book should have been a treasure. Instead with no obvious editorial input it ends up being frustrating. As far as I can see it is arranged by design studio output. It should have been arranged, I think, by style of logo, typographic, flat graphic, illustrative etc. The captions don't do the reader any favors either. Client and designer are listed but no dates or what sort of company the logo is for. This book seems very typical of David Carter's output, I have a copy of his 1988 'Logos of America's Largest Corporations', six hundred (nicely printed) marks with just the company name and city location, no designer names or dates.
As to the logos, with 2500 of them there has to be a lot of duds but that is only to be expected. The majority of them have been produced for small companies who feel they need some mark for local recognition and on this basis there are many neat solutions here. For example page 234 shows a capital D incorporating a fork and spoon, a clever idea and surely just what Dantes Restaurants Inc wanted. If the book was just going to show real clever stuff produced by super creative designer folk it would be pretty thin. For the money though I feel this is good value.
At the other extreme a logo book that I have enjoyed is Per Mollerup's 'Marks of Excellence' (ISBN 0714838381) a history of logos, beautifully designed and printed and here the logos are grouped according to their look, eyes, flags, globes, hearts etc. A brilliant survey.
the worst design book i have ever spent $ on.......2003-11-14
Fellow buyers of design books on amazon this is the worst book i have ever purchsed . This book is a compilation of the most poorly designed trademarks. Please do not get this book!!! All the logos seem to have been haphazardly picked. If you insist on getting this book, you should definately check it out at a book store first because that will change your mind faster than roaches scurrying away from light.
Logo ideas for everyone - designers to small businesses........2003-08-03
This book has 2,500 of the best logos done by designers from all across America and nothing else. This book was put together so it could become a compendium of logos that one can use to see different styles and techniques and jump start their own creative juices. The book is full color and the only way to navigate the book is through the Index. There is no table of contents. Each page has a few logos with credit given to each the designers at the bottom of the page in very small print.
Every few pages, there is a full page devoted to just one company logo. But the cool part is that this full page has pictures of the logo in action - whether it is on the product packaging, bill board, or store front sign. This is very helpful as it gives you a context to judge the power of the logo. Just a graphics image against a white page background means you need to use your imagination trying to picture how the logo's going to look in its intended use.
Whether you are a designer or a small business owner that wants to get a logo done through a designer, this book is an invaluable tool. If you are a designer, you can use it to get your creative juices to flow or just admire the work done by others for inspirational reasons. If you are a small business owner, you can use it to work with your logo designer. You can point out some of the logos and just say 'I like these' and that gives the designer a place to start in creating your logo. This avoids a lot of wasted work as you are both trying to figure out what you like and what best represents your business image.
When I first started doing research on good logo design books, I was confused by the number of logo books by this author. The names are a little misleading when you try to figure out which one is the more recent version. I finally decided to use the publication date for this purpose and this book happens to be the latest (published in May 2003). We recently started offering Corporate Identity Management services to small businesses through our company and we are finding that this book is an invaluable tool in communicating with our clients. Especially if our clients are in another city, we just ask them to get a copy of this book before starting the project.
Even if you aren't a designer or someone looking for design services, this book is still fun to flip through if you are the creative type. The price is just phenomenally low for something of this high quality (I am trying to imagine the price of printing along considering it's full color). If you have to even remotely work with logos, just get the book. It's a decision that I haven't regretted even for a second. Have fun!
Great book despite poor editing.......2002-02-28
This is a great inspirational book for logo designers! I find it to be a valuable addition to my design library. The only criticism I have is that this book was not carefully edited. There are low-resolution logos peppered throughout and logo placement does not always match logo descriptions. If you can get past this small speed bump, you have an excellent book.
A Broad-based Logo Book That Should Have Been Better.......2002-01-11
This book is unique, among the many logo books I have owned or seen, for including a higher percentage of "retail" branding logos alongside the usual complement of arty and edgy graphic design identity marks. This upsets some readers who expect all edge, no cheese. But as I see it, one of the principle values of this book is supporting you when you are called back from Planet Ego to Planet Earth from time to time, to help you when you are stumped over that P.O.P. type treatment or retail branding logo that you need by tomorrow noon.
On another note, it does have some logos that are, as someone here says, ten years old, that have been in all the annuals several times already. I, too, do wish the entries were all marked by date. And further, I would love to have a collection of this scope culled from work I know to be 5 years old or less. It almost seems like a cheat to pump up the number of logos included in a non-history-focused volume by dipping back a decade.
All in all, The Big Book of Logos is a nice addition to the library of either ad agency or design house, while it doesn't at all replace the Graphis logo annuals or anything of that caliber.

Time to design a new logo.......2002-10-22
Just got my copy of Big Book of Logos 3 and I'm putting it to use already. I was just asked to design a logo and find this book a useful mind dump of 2,500 logos to get my brain cells working. My David Carter book collection has grown over the years and I find them a good place to start whenever I'm kicking off a new design project.
Book Description
It's hard to top a book that Amazon.com ranked among the top-selling 2 percent of all books in print, but this revised edition does just that by adding a huge new crop of recent designs to its previous collection, creating a deluxe, full-color volume packed with 2,500 superior logo designs.
This reliable, one-stop resource shows the best work of top graphics designers from more than five hundred firms across the United States. A treasure trove of inspiring ideas and ongoing reference for anyone concerned with logo design for corporations, retail establishments, restaurants, entertainment venues, and organizations of all kinds, this book also definitely belongs near the drawing board of any student who is seriously preparing for a graphics design career.

A Worthy Catalog Filled With Design Ideas and Concepts.......2002-03-04
David E. Carter has published shelves full of books on design and creative applications. The New Big Book of Logos is a valuable addition to anyone's swipe file. If you're looking for yet another array of by-gone days in corporate identity, then this is NOT the book for your money. Frankly, I'm tired of books filled with thoroughly worn-out antique icons (clip art) of corporate entities. This book and it's predecessor are fresh and valuable to the creative mind for the wealth of ideas taken from unknown and uncommon identities. For the purpose of looking at others' work as something to analyze, pull-apart, and re-assemble into something new and completely different, this book is a gold mine of creative opportunities. Your money is well-spent on anything David E. Carter produces.
ShoeShineBoy.......2002-02-28
I don't know why anyone would need to buy another logo book after buying this one. It's chock-full of logos. Certainly, they are not all gems...but there's enough good ideas in there to get your own brain stimulated.
In reference to the guy who was disappointed in this book because it didn't have recognizable, big brand logos (Shell, McDonalds, etc..) my question is "why would you want that?" Why would you want a book filled with marks everyone knows so well that they see them in their sleep. Give me fresh stuff! Stuff I haven't seen! And, yes, this means stuff from big markets as well as small. Why is a logo for a small maket any less valid? Why does distribution suddenly equal rellevancy? Maybe you should go back to design school to figure this out.
The Big Book of Repetitive, Cheap and Dated Clip Art.......2001-11-16
This could have has SO much potential - it could have dealt with famous brands in the last 100+years such as Shell, BP, Bell, AT&T, IBM, Coke, Pepsi, Sony, Audi, BMW, McDonalds, Procter and Gamble, Microsoft, etc etc - there are so many famous and excellent brands. And they are International we all know them, but it would be nice to have a book covering them all and some more obscure ones.
But this book isn't in that league at all. This is the big book of early 90's clip art. Most of the designs are horribly dated, with sickly pastel colours, overly complex motifs etc. They are all much the same and certainly don't stand out on the page.
Obviously they are all Americentric, but worse they are all small-town Americentric. The cutesy clip art for the 10th Anniverary Snowy Creek Cub Spelling Bee, or Grand Street, Middletown, Nowheresville 3rd Annual Street Parade and the like have no value or merit outside of that institution. And that goes for 90% of the clip art...sorry logos. The work on offer is wholly unprofessional and bland. Managing to fill 400 odd pages with such mediocre work is quite remarkable.
After having read through this book I opted for How to Design Logos, Symbols and Icons - at least it had some quality, recognisable brands in it.
Thre's inspiration here for EVERY logo designer........2000-11-18
OK. You're trying to come up with a logo design for your new client. You're stuck. What do you do? If you're lucky, you have this book handy, and you can flip through nearly 400 pages and about 2,500 logo designs from creatives all over the world. Suddnely, you see something you like. You don't copy it, but you get an idea from what you just saw. That's why you buy books like this. Ideas "spring" from other ideas.
Will you love every logo in this book? Of course not. That's not its purpose. Diferent designers from all over the world have greatly varying styles. But one thing for sure, you'll see enough "great" work in here to lift you to new heights of creativity. (And guess what, much of the stuff that you think is "so-so," others will think is "great." That's what makes life interesting. Quite simply, if you design logos, you should have this book on your reference shelf.
Inspiration for mediocrity........2000-11-15
I bought this book the same day I bought the beautifully-bound "Trademarks designed by Chermayeff & Geismar" (Princeton Architectural Press). I plan to use them both in a presentation to show what 40 years of good, solid design can do versus a Big Book of Hack. This is indeed a big book, but when David E. Carter refers to these logos as "great" he is really deceiving the growing designers in his audience. And when he goes so far as "To paraphrase W.P. Kinsella, 'Publish it and they will buy.'" his intentions become frighteningly transparent. If you truly want to be inspired, learn from the legends. For the same amount of money you can own the Chermayeff & Geismar book. I gave it two stars, but that's mostly for effort.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting information.......2005-04-02
This is a very thorough, fact-filled biography - up to THE GLASS MENAGERIE of 1945. Leverich approaches his subject in a business-like manner, generally sacrificing artistic concerns for factual ones. Some of these interesting facts include:
Williams spent his childhood with his grandparents in Clarksdale, MS
Went to the U. of Missouri to study journalism
Hated his father till the end of his life when he learned his mother was actually "the villain"
Often broke
His sister was schizo, like Blanche in STREETCAR
Loved to swim
His homosexual lifestyle was pretty sordid
Met D.H. Lawrence in Taos
Laurette Taylor, star of GLASS MENAGERIE on Broadway, was ill on opening night and would be throwing up while off stage during the performance
Anyone interested in Tennessee Williams will find much to think about and be fascinated with in this biography. Recommended.
Well Written and Superbly Researched.......2004-09-29
This was the most interesting biography I have ever read. I found that I was even reading the footnotes and bibliography!
The book begins with a delve into Tennessee Williams' genealogy (including a chart, which I referred to frequently while reading the book). The author goes on to describe Tennesee's formative years, home life, and young-adulthood. The book takes the reader up through Tennessee's overwhelming success with "The Glass Menagerie."
I found the book (and, therefore, Tennessee Williams) so interesting that I began researching Williams' works and also his favorite writers (Hart Crane, DH Lawrence). I call a biography a complete success that could have such an effect as it has on me.
I look forward to the next edition, though I wonder if it will ever be in print.
I Love This Book.......2003-05-10
This is a wonderfully done book. I feel I've lived in "Tom's" shoes and appreciate who he was and the struggles he faced. It's a loving portrait that doesn't shy away from the honest details of the life of the young Tennessee. I hope the sequel that's to take us from the Glass Menangerie to the end of Tennessee's life comes out soon----I'll be waiting!!!
If you want to know Williams, this book is essential........2001-09-09
Meticulously researched and sensitively written, this book is the definitive biography of Tennessee Williams, even though it only covers the period up to the beginning of his success. I haven't found any others that can rival its quality. The depth and detail are unsurpassed in Leverich's finely crafted portrait, revealing the many facets of one of America's greatest playwrights. As a "theater person," Leverich brings a special authority to his work, infusing it with expert analysis and theatrical history. A really great read!
An intricate, sensitive and compelling portrait.......2001-05-16
Lyle Leverich, a theatre artist himself, paints (with the participation of the late "Tom" himself) an intricate, sensitive and compelling portrait of the closest The United States has come to producing her own Shakespeare.
Tennessee Williams' ability to place passionate and visual poetry into the mouths of the commoner and gentry alike makes his work, in my opinion the finest ever produced by an American playwright. The towering and beautiful fragile characters of his plays combined with his devotion to the utter magic the physical theatre provides, allowed America through Tennessee Williams to finally place itself rightly next to Ibsen, Strinberg, Chekov and The Bard himself.
Of course "Tom" did not develop in a vacume and what Leverich provides here in this excellent biography wrapped in the guise of a psychological thriller worthy of so great an object, is a portrait of a man often crippled by acute sensitivity who saw the writing muse as a means for survival. Leverich manages to paint the man behind the myth, bring him down into a real space and time while also managing to lift him to the angels.
This is one of the greatest biographies ever written about a theatre artist- of which Williams was a supreme being. I, and many others, eagerly await volume two.
