Book Description
Considering that they thrive on secrecy, mobsters have, over the years, proven themselves to be notorious gossips-even out-and-out blabbermouths. The fact is, mobsters DO say the darnedest things, and whether discussing business, women, food, death, sex, or "the life," you can always count on a mobster to spill it in an unintentionally funny, incredibly insightful, or simply terrifying way. With quotable quotes from both semi-literate stooges and the smoothest professionals who ever made headlines, this book speaks to the millions of people who are fascinated by the mob.

Anotable misprint, or the wrong quote Credited to Bugsy Siegel.......2007-05-31
In the chapter named "Death" there are two quotes credited to Benjamin Siegel that probably should have been credited to Louis "Little Lepke" Buchhalter. He was the only prohibition era gangster that was sentanced to the Electric Chair. Benny Siegel was killed in Virgina Hill's livingroom, as was noted in the Cast of characters at the end of the book. Somewhere the author or the proofreader slipped up on the job.
Very Funny.......2007-05-07
Very Funny book. Listen to many not so bright people come up with some not so bright things to say.
Brown M. (Loves Park,IL).......2006-04-20
I thought this book would be more interesting. I personally think that if there were more background given to some of the quotes it would be better. Instead it's just one quote after another. I would have like to know in what context they were spoken. I've read alot worse ,but i've also read alot better from this author.
Lots of fun; just one error.......2005-01-13
This book is great fun, and is loaded with many humorous and/or insightful quotes. I just want to point out one error: on Page 47, three quotes about the electric chair are incorrectly attributed to Bugsy Siegel. Bugsy Siegel was never sentenced to death (at least not by any court of law). He was shot to death by the mob in 1947 in Hollywood. The "Bugsy" who actually said the things quoted in the book was Martin "Buggsy" (spelled with two G's) Goldtsein, who went to the chair at Sing Sing in 1941. He was one of the Murder, Inc. hit men sold out by Abe "Kid Twist" Reles, who is mentioned in one of the quotes.
capeci's done the legwork -- all you have to do is enjoy.......2004-08-19
capeci must have combed through thousands of pages to gather this assortment of mafia quotes. it's hard to believe that they are all real! i never realized that mobsters could be so philosophical--or funny. some quotes even made me laugh out loud. this also makes a great gift for friends and family.

:0) .......2007-07-15
Durango what a man of mystery i loved his story very interesting start but his story was also worth the wait.
An Affair to Remember.......2006-08-05
What can I say, Mrs Jackson never stops!!!. Durango Westmoreland is another after my own heart. Brenda surely does her thing again as another Westmoreland is taken off of the market. Durango the "poster boy" for confirmed batchlerhood is blindsided by the after effects of a memorable "one night stand", but in true Westmoreland fashion he handles the situation like to man that he is and to his surprise he finds the love that he did not even knew existed. Read in 5 hours. Eagerly awaiting "Ian's Ultimate Gamble" due to arrive any day now. Please pick up the whole Westmoreland Series. You won't be disappointed!!
An Affair To Remember.......2006-07-23
Boy, Ms. Jackson has certainly done it again with the Westmoreland men. This time it is Durango Westmoreland - rugged, mountain man, handsome and with the intention of being a confirmed bachelor. However, good his intentions are, he is also an honorable man and when circumstances "pops up" in the form of Savannah Claiborne's unexpected pregnancy, Durango takes action as only a Westmoreland man would. He sets about with firm commitments to be a father to his baby even if it means marrying Savannah. It's not that he does not think Savannah is worthy of him, it is just the idea that he has to kiss his bachelorhood goodbye.
How many other Westmoreland men have felt the same way? Well, to name a few, there was Dare, the Sheriff who suddenly found out that his long-time love was also the mother of his pre-teen son. Then there was Thorn, who wanted to just build motorcycles and ride the fast life. However, when Tara stepped in, she was the challenge he could not overcome. How about Storm, the firefighter, who discovered love in the heart of New Orleans or his brother Stone, who thought all he had to do was write about love and romance. Unknowing to him, Stone's love was riding the plane with him. These are just a few of the Westmoreland clan.
Durango Westmoreland is truly an example of what all males should be and do when they are involved in a situation where it is not only the female to blame, but hey, it does take two to tango. I wish the majority, if not all men, would step up to the plate and face their responsibilities.
Ms. Jackson has really kept the readers up to date with the Westmorelands and believe me, "there has never been a dull moment." Again, Ms. Jackson, we enjoy the stories, please keep them coming.
Just The Right Way.......2006-05-24
Brenda Jackson has done it again bringing the Westmoreland's man the live of their lives but not before a fight this time the member of the rowdy bunch is Durango. Savannah Claiborne never saw herself as the casual type but when she finds herself pregnant she knows that she must right the past and the only way to do that was to tell Durango about the child she carried. Durango was what anyone would call a confirm a bachelor so when he finds himself in front of Savannah and her delectation he finds himself in a predicament of no return. Durango knows he must do right by his child but at the same time he has to keep his heart under wrap.
Brenda Jackson takes you on an adventure through the mountains and shows you how a night of passion could make all the difference so the question is who next and what more could happen. Brenda is slated to drop Ian Westmoreland this summer so enjoy as she turns up the heat.
Durango...a smooth ride.......2006-05-23
I LOVE anything Brenda Jackson writes. Being the die-hard fan that I am, I patiently waited for "The Durango Affair." My last "fix" was "Taking Care of Business," so needless to say; I finished this book in about 5 hours.
However, I must say: Although the passion and fire was there, it seemed to be less of it in this book. Usually, Brenda will throw down on more than a few pages of hot passion and leave me hanging on every word.
I don't know what it is...maybe it's because Harlequin published a few of her last books, as opposed to her earlier books from BET and St. Martin's Griffin. For example, "No More Playas" and the "Madaris" series made me grab a pillow and beg for water.
Overall, "The Durango Affair" was still VERY good because it introduced Durango and kept us connected with all the other fine Westmoreland brothers and cousins. I'm looking forward to meeting Ian. If you haven't been properly introduced to the family, start with "Delany's Desert Sheikh" (which may be hard to get) and "A Little Dare."
Hopefully, her next book and those coming from Kimani Publishers will offer more of her oh-so-sexy and "it's getting hot in here" trademark. I'm anxiously awaiting her next book. As always, much respect Ms Jackson!

Book Description
Her answers regarding the manuscript?s authenticity and scope were seductively vague. I asked her if she thought the document was real. She squinted and tilted her head to one side. ?You mean is it authentic?? ?I can tell you that it was written in first-century Greek, and it is the soul and life experience of someone.? ?That much is authentic.? ?She leaned forward as she continued.? ?And there is something more than that, we both feel it, or you wouldn?t be here.? An ancient manuscript is mysteriously abandoned to a stranger. Upon examining its contents both the stranger and the reader find two thousand years of distance dissolve and discover themselves invisibly standing next to Pontius Pilate, a man tumbling toward infamy. This ?fly on the wall? account of events that led to a crucifixion, not only makes the reader part of the journey, but a key player in the death of Jesus of Nazareth.

Book Description
Joe Ehrmann, a former NFL football star and volunteer coach for the Gilman high school football team, teaches his players the keys to successful defense: penetrate, pursue, punish, love. Love? A former captain of the Baltimore Colts and now an ordained minister, Ehrmann is serious about the game of football but even more serious about the purpose of life. Season of Life is his inspirational story as told by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jeffrey Marx, who was a ballboy for the Colts when he first met Ehrmann.
Ehrmann now devotes his life to teaching young men a whole new meaning of masculinity. He teaches the boys at Gilman the precepts of his Building Men for Others program: Being a man means emphasizing relationships and having a cause bigger than yourself. It means accepting responsibility and leading courageously. It means that empathy, integrity, and living a life of service to others are more important than points on a scoreboard.
Decades after he first met Ehrmann, Jeffrey Marx renewed their friendship and watched his childhood hero putting his principles into action. While chronicling a season with the Gilman Greyhounds, Marx witnessed the most extraordinary sports program he'd ever seen, where players say "I love you" to each other and coaches profess their love for their players. Off the field Marx sat with Ehrmann and absorbed life lessons that led him to reexamine his own unresolved relationship with his father.
Season of Life is a book about what it means to be a man of substance and impact. It is a moving story that will resonate with athletes, coaches, parents -- anyone struggling to make the right choices in life.
Customer Reviews:
Get this book for your graduate.......2007-10-08
There can be no better compliment to a book than the fact that after reading A Season of Life I immediately ordered three more copies for my own kids. I was fortunate to have a coach with his priorities in the right place, and twenty-five years later he remains the benchmark for how I evaluate coaches. This book is a great testament that you can do things the right way, and be successful. It would be an excellent gift for any graduate that will be working with youth.
All parents and youth coaches should read this book.......2007-09-09
I would heartily recommend this book to any parent who has kids involved in youth sports. This is not a book on how to become a coach who wins games. Instead, this is a book that shows how to mold and develop kids who are winners in the game of life.
The Gilman football program wins plenty of games. In this book, Jeffrey Marx highlights the coach and former all-pro NFL footballer Joe Ehrmann. As a coach, he finds it more valuable to teach life lessons to his young charges than football lessons. Of course, they do a lot of good football teaching too. And, the coaches know the game very well.
The book was written after the 2001 season. The coaches at the time felt that Victor Abiamiri was the player most likely to end up in the NFL. In fact, he is now a rookie on the Philadephia Eagles. I have no idea if any other Gilman players have made the NFL. How many kids on any high school team ever make the NFL? Not many. Victor Abiamiri may be the only NFL player of the bunch. However, I am confident that the all or most of the Gilman kids will become good productive members of society.
Of course that is the end result. I recommend you read the story and learn why.
Really, really excellent book.......2007-08-23
As a father of three, including a young boy and a youth football coach, this is a book I recommend to all sorts of people who are involved in helping to raise young boys to become responsible young men -- teachers, coaches, parents and anyone else would be well-served by reading the book.
Great book!.......2007-07-08
This book is a must read for anyone involved in sports. It shows you how to keep things in perspective when looking at the big picture of things to come.
Most moving book I have ever read!.......2007-06-21
As a few others have stated here, I became interested in Coach Ehrmann after watching the documentary by Steve Sabol of NFL Films.
I was very moved seeing how the coaches of the Gilman HS Football team were able to get their message through to the kids. A lot of what they "preach" might be over some kids heads, but they way that they teach life's lessons by using football as the avenue was both brilliant and inspiring.
This past Little League season, I tried my best to emulate what both Ehrmann and the head coach did for their boys, by talking to them, and emphasizing time and time again that I wanted them all to have the greatest time of their lives out there on the field and to never worry about or ask me what the score was. I also made sure that even the weakest players were put in "positions to succeed", rather than worry about putting them in harms way by putting them somewhere where they might "fail". And as scripted in a movie, the most rewarding experience for everyone was when these less naturally talented kids actually made a play for us or got a big hit! The ENTIRE TEAM was overjoyed and started patting them on the head! Nothing could be more motiviating for them...or...for me than actually seeing it come to fruition!
If you DO coach kids, or were ever considering it, you owe it to yourself to look upon it as the vocation that it is...in the way Coach Ehrmann does. You'll be surprised how much of an effect you can have on a kid's life, and how much watching these kids develop together can have an effect on YOUR life. Our record was actually 4-6 this season (and nobody on the team knew), yet it was, by far, our most successful and rewarding season!
Thank you Jeffrey Marx and thank you COach Ehrmann for motivating me more than you'll ever know!!

I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN, I COULDN'T GO TO SLEEP.......2003-08-10
After lunch one day about 10-12 years ago I stopped at my local bookshop. Sherry, the owner put "Angel's Visit's" into my hand and suggested I buy it because I buy wine books. Back at my office I started to read Darlington's inquiry into Zin. I counldn't stop. I literally was glued to this book! No work got done. At 6:00 pm I went home, got into bed and kept on reading. I couldn't leave it alone, not even overnight. I finished it at 3:00 am next morning. Buy this book. Take the day off...
It's Back!.......2001-03-29
What these other revievers said is absolutely true. Angel's Visits is an eminently readable and enjoyable book that I highly recommend. After being out of print for some time, it's now available again under the title "Zin".
n entertaining, good read; a regrettable loss,.......1998-06-19
Over recent years I have given copies of this excellent, entertaining book to friends because, although not large, it seemed well-rounded as well as a good read. The book explored the mystique of a wonderful grape from its mysterious beginnings to its contemporary California status. Perhaps some of my interest is parochial, as it touches on familiar San Francisco Bay Area milieus. Nonetheless, now that "Angels Visits" is now out of print, I regret that I didn't merely loan out my last give-away.
An informative and easy to read study of a wonderful wine........1997-10-30
It is an insightful and interesting primer on Zinfandel. I have tried to locate copies of the book and was saddened to learn it was out of print. It is a must read for ZAP people and would be a run away best seller at their annual tasting. It would be an appreciated gift for anyone who enjoys Zinfandel.
Compelling history of a critical California wine........1997-09-19
Written in an easy style, this history of California Zinfandel provides both local color and historical perspective to California's most unique wine. Probably unintentionally, the author evokes some of Peter Meyer's YEAR IN PROVANCE in his discussions of wine and winemakers. The personal and the sociologically are covered with equal and compelling grace.
A shame that the original publisher has allowed this to go out of print, and that no other publisher is smart enough to republish the book

Together, their knowledge is unsurpassed in the glass world. He has co-authored books on Carnival Glass, Millersburg Glass, Opalescent glass, and Pressed Glass. REVIEW: This book is author Bill Edwards' continuation of the Millersburg "story," from his two other books, both written in the 80s, that he feels he never truly finished. His love for Millersburg was rekindled through his recent collecting and resurgence of the glass's popularity, and he published one of the most in-depth histories of the Millersburg company. The book features that history as well as hundreds of beautiful pieces of glass.

I loved this book.......2000-04-05
I read this book yesterday and bought it for a favorite 3-year old. This book is wonderful -- color illustrations combined with real-life coping skills that kids can relate to. The litte bunny has had a trying day, riding in the car. He's been jumped on and had cold liver chili for dinner... It's time for a visit to the Bunny Planet to see the way the day should have gone.
The writing is gentle and sleepy-making, but sophisticated enough to keep me reading to the end with a dozing toddler in my lap. Shoot, I'd like to go twenty light years south of Mars, too on a rough day.
Get all three of these books -- they are wonderful.

'Sewing for Rank-Beginner Ultra-Dummies'..........2003-06-29
And I say that with great affection and deep understanding for all the rank-beginner ultra-dummies like me out there! I too am just about ready to get every other book that ever comes out in this series, as some of the other reviewers here mentioned. And unlike sooo many other patterns or books, this one actually includes tasteful, elegant pillow designs and ideas, not just ditsy-cutesy stuff. Fun, easy, useful learning -- can't beat that!
Great Series.......2002-12-25
This entire series is the best for new sewers like myself. I can now tackle projects without fear. Worth the money.
Better Than Expected.......2000-10-03
As a pillow designer, I was skeptical that I would find information that was new to me. In this book I found many tips that ensure a perfect result, along with wonderful pictures and detailed explanations of techniques. Even if not all of the pillow styles appeal to you, you'll be happy with this book as a guide.
Better than Sewing for Dummies!.......2000-04-30
Being a beginner, many sewing books (I have about 8 reference books!) are too advanced and ambitious for me and take for granted that everyone knows all the sewing terms. This book is such a no brainer that I am thinking of getting the rest of the series.
A Good Starter..........2000-04-23
I used this book for my first sewing project, and successfully created 2 pillows in an afternoon! Clear and Easy, with good explanations of sewing terms. I'd definitly recommend it to the beginning audience.

Book Description
Judging from the wealth of TV programs dedicated to room redos, Americans are mad for home makeovers. The idea of a home makeover is seductive, but not everyone has scads of cash to spend revamping a room. With 200 full-color photos and 50 color illustrations, Budget Makeovers reveals how do-it-yourselfers can attain a professional polish at an affordable price. The book features 12 real-life makeovers, showing how to transform boring or outdated rooms - be they kitchens, baths, family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, or bedrooms - into fresh, beautiful, and livable spaces. Each room featured includes color before and after photographs (200 in all), a description of how the room was updated, a list of what the owners loved and hated about the space, the tab on how much was spent, and a breakdown of how long each phase of the makeover took. How-to projects specific to each room, valuable trade secrets, decorating shortcuts, full color illustrations, and design ideas are included with each redesign.
Customer Reviews:
Creative & stylish but affordable.......2006-05-19
I read the book in a day - easy and fun to read. The book is composed of various real-life makeovers for various rooms. Each contains before and after shots as well as information on how the look was achieved, how problems were solved and the final budget tally. I will refer back to this book for ideas from time to time. It's biggest strength is that the ideas are realistic and affordable (but not cheap).
15 Makeovers On A Budget.......2005-12-19
Since the TV crews haven't made it to my house yet, I keep reading these books for tips to transform my home. This one is particularly appealing, since it spells out the costs and time investment for the projects.
The sample rooms are in real houses and include living rooms, dirning rooms, kitchens, baths and bedrooms. Good color photos accompany the text.
Book Description
Logos are one of the most succinct forms of advertising and one of the greatest challenges of graphic design: besides being immediately recognizable, logos must convey a big message in a small space. The best logos are striking, symbolic brands that cut through language by employing shape and color as their main communication tools. What Logos Do and How They Do It presents twelve case studies and hundreds of examples of current logos that have met with great success. An essential for both novice and professional designers, this book illuminates the logo design process and explains what makes each logo work for its market.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2000-04-15
While this book provides some beautiful examples of current trends in logos, it offers much more. It provides a great overview of why logos are important to the products and services they represent as well as how well crafted logo concepts are developed. I recommend this book to all of my clients before I start logo projects for them.
Great look at current trends.......1999-11-28
I had to write after reading the reviews below (one was obviously written by Marc English's mother). I found this book gave me great insight into current design trends. It's not a history of design. It's more a present and future. Loads of examples with notations on what it is that makes them work.
Good companies and concepts but lacks depth.......1999-09-01
Logo book with some concepts on great companies but lacks development stages and depth.
not for professional designers.......1999-04-21
Very disappointed. This book is filled with pretty pictures and wow-gee-whiz gushing, but no critical analysis. I expected critical analysis, based on the title, but instead was presented with marketing-quality, un-scholarly, un-professional text.
If you want a real book on logos read Marc English. I feel bad saying bad things about the book. But, I really disliked it. If you were new to graphic design you'd love it. But billed as it is, it's one-star. :(

Left me wanting to know more.......1999-12-29
I have been a fan of Phil's since 1980 and have gone to many concerts. His talent is beyond belief, leaving me in awe after every show. I nearly fainted when he almost touched my hand at a Great Woods concert. From this book, I wanted to learn more about Phil Collins the incredibly talented and driven individual. The book spent too much time on the struggle and strife in his life and not enough on the triumphs of a man who saw his star in the sky and never stopped, even after surpassing it. I seek to find out more about my musical hero because this book did not satisfy me. Phil, can we hear "Both Sides" of the story?
But Seriously Folks.............1999-12-13
This was such a great book and I know that any Phil Collins fan would enjoy reading it as much as I did. It shows Phil as a real person, even though we all look up to him in awe because of his great artistic talents. I know that after reading this book, I still feel the same way I did about Phil. That is, if someone asked me, Dalia, if you could meet anyone, I mean anyone and just spend the evening chatting, who would it be? My answer would still be Phil Collins,of course! I write poetry and would love to make them into songs and would love Phils' advice and maybe he could give me some pointers. The one thing that suprised me though, was what his mom said about his current wife, Orianne. "I hope she doesn't change, and if she does, I hope I'm not around to pick up the pieces." Phil is a big boy and his choices in his life, were his choices, some good, some bad and maybe he just grew apart from his first wife and his second wife lived too much for him and never developed any interest outside their marriage. But Orianne and Phil, I wish you the best and hope for you two, a long life together.
A must read.......1999-12-09
After being a fan of Phil Collins for many years I was pleased to discover the biography of this highly talented man. The book delved into his personal and public life in a very thorough manner and unveiled many personal and professional qualities of Phil, from his upbringing, through his times with Genesis, the birth of his controversional solo career through to the current day. I was enthralled by the very precise way in which all aspects of his life were covered especially that of his marriages, his relationships with his wives, children,& co-workers and his dedication to his art. This book gave me great insight into what has made Phil the astute performer and person that he is today. Not all of the aspects of the biography were in Phil's favour (for example, incidences where he revealed his fiery temperament) but I credit the author for this as it allows for the reader to gain his own insight and opinion on who the real Phil Collins is as a person. This biography enlightened me on the life and times of a wonderful person who is a credit to the music industry, a dedicated man who revealed his most personal life to his fans through his art. I believe that this is a must read for any Phil Collins fan. It is not one sided, nor does it intend to influence your opinion. Read it for yourself, allow yourself the oppurtunity to learn more on this remarkable man.
A great book about a talented man!.......1999-11-03
I've been a Phil Collins fan since 1973, so I know a little bit about the man. This book has filled in the missing details, the things I wanted to know. I always wondered who the baby was that he had with him in London in 1974, and later that same year in New York. Back then, he worked all the time, constantly perfecting his craft. I wondered how that lifestyle affected the mother and the child, since he wasn't home much. This book opened the door and exposed that part of his life. Without being positive or negative, the author presented the facts. I was fortunate to see Phil perform with his son, and I have often wondered what their relationship was like. This book provided some insight into that relationship and many others. This book is a must-read for any Phil Collins fan.
Phil bio a fan's delight, but seems like a work in progress.......1999-10-22
I have been a fan of Phil Collins and Genesis since 1982, and so there was no way I was NOT going to buy this book. Unfortunately, due to the untimely death of the author Ray Coleman, it reads like an unfinished work. His widow did an admirable job of trying to pull the pieces together, but I was left reading many excerpts of interviews with important sources and nothing to tie them together.
The book begins with promise and great detail as we learn the inside story behind the making of Phil's first solo album, but the rest of his "history" is sped through with shocking abandon, particularly his "glory years" in the mid-1980s. There is also no real in-depth coverage of his Genesis career; a sad oversight.
Still, the photos (most exclusive to the book) are very good, and no Phil fan should be without the book. It is unfortunate that this might be the only chance we have for a "definitive biography," and in spite of the title, it really isn't.
