Two years after the American Revolution, and the British Navy is still licking its wounds. Bolitho, after finally recovering from a serious illness encountered in the South Seas, haunts the Admiralty, looking for a new command, his beloved frigate Tempest laid up for repairs.

The Admiralty awards his past heroism with a squadron of three small topsail cutters, and directs him to assist the revenue service against the often brutal smugglers who are using the Kentish coast, apparently with assistance from powerful patrons.

This is another story of intrigue, violence, and treachery as Bolitho--saddled again with incompetent superiors--struggles to fulfill his duty.

A troubled Bolitho.......2002-01-24

Bolitho is feeling distraught. It is peacetime 1791 and he's on the shore. He's recovering from fever. His romance in the South Seas has ended. Of Viola he has only a gold watch. France is under the Terror. Then Bolitho gets his first multi-ship command, a flotilla of topsail cutters with the newly installed Smashers (nasty short-range carronades), but hardly the frigate he deserved. He's in charge of the hated press gangs at the Nore, site of a later fleet mutiny. His loyal coxs'n Allday deserts him! And he suspects his superior and a captain or two of collusion with English smugglers, who are taking heinous advantage of refugee French women. Life is ugly all around, and dominates the dark mood of this novel. Bolitho races about on many filthy errands, in foul seas, and against big odds. That, at least, is nothing new.

Deja vu: the story line is reminiscent of "Midshipman Bolitho," once again chasing smugglers. Again the smugglers have a deadly intelligence system and protection from a mystery authority. Nominally in command of his destiny, Bolitho encounters a master politician who sends him on highly dangerous secret missions into Holland. Curiously, for all Bolitho's empathy and respect for his crews, he never seems to invite his officers to dinner. There's little in this series of the sumptuous larders most captains supplied.

Kent includes nice bonus appendices, one on the specialist warrant officers, the other on the origins of some naval customs. But nary a word on the possible historicity of the events told here.

Stand by the guns! Loosen the t'gallant and jib!.......2001-12-13

Although not one of the best in the series, this novel captures the grim life at sea and the struggle against nature. In this book, brutal smugglers ply the English Channel between Holland, France and England. The central characters are well written and alive with problems, dialog and several seem destined to re-appear in future Bolitho novels. However, Mr. Kent seemed to have Bolitho dwell in his past too many times. A dark, brooding side of the naval hero seems to fill many pages, but it does make Sir Richard that much more of a fleshed out character. He does feel for his dead friends, former ships and in some cases, former enemies. That aside, the tale moves along like a nimble sixth-rater with all sheets unfurled in a southern wind. The action is swift and brutal as Bolitho gives battle to the smugglers and their allies. Stormy weather, plenty of thunderous cannon fire, smashed bulkheads, parted ratlines and terrified crewmen. The author once again details the sea as an angry foe without mercy. The battle at the end of the book between a couple of corvettes and three cutters is suberb Kent writting. A welcome addition to the collection none the less. Well worth reading and blends seamlessly into the very next novel. An excellent series that has re-defined nautical fiction.

Bolitho Battles North Sea Smugglers.......2001-01-08

With All Despatch is chronologically the last of Kent's pre-Napoleonic Wars Bolitho novels. It is also the most recently written depicting that era. As such it is one of his most polished if somewhat familiar.

Kent has used the structure of With All Despatch before. Essentially he has written the novel in two linked sections with a mini-climax in the first followed by the major climax and denouement in the second. In Gallant Company was particularly effective using this format and in With All Despatch the two sections are linked even more solidly.

In this entry Bolitho who is still mourning the loss of his lady must obtain men for His Majesty's service while battling smugglers on England's North Sea coast. Complicating the matter is possible collusion between a senior officer and the smugglers. The head smuggler seems unreachable and there is an obvious parallel with organized crime and drug cartels of today. As the novel progresses it is also obvious that France and England will be at war soon. Can Bolitho meet all of his objectives and defeat his enemies? To provide a clue, the series will continue with many more novels for 23 more years.

In spite of being a popular series the reader has to know that Richard Bolitho is a tragic figure. The chronology in most books shows his death in 1815. By With All Despatch Bolitho has lost both his parents and his brother who turned traitor before dying. His faithful sidekick Stockdale was killed after nearly 10 years with him and Bolitho notes that his replacement Allday has been with him for 10 years. The reader has to be waiting for the other shoe to drop with Allday. The series could be really depressing if Kent didn't fill the novels with nail biting tension and thrilling action sequences. Kent's obvious knowledge of sailing and love of the sea also provide charm to the series.

With All Despatch is one of Kent's most polished. Perhaps it doesn't have the fire and intensity of earlier offerings but it is still good. While the entire series is violent some of this novel is particularly gruesome. I wouldn't recommend With All Despatch for younger readers unlike the earlier novels.

disappointing.......2000-07-09

Of the first 8 Bolitho books, this is my least favorite. The story is permeated with sadness, hurt, bitterness, and amoral villains. I found it very depressing and had to force myself to finish it.

Sigmund Freud meets The Shadow meets The Recycle Bin.......2006-03-04

I read this book solely because it was highly rated here. "Riveting"; "solid"; "white-knuckle action"... That was my first mistake. My second mistake was to continue reading after I realized how poor it is.

Folks, how are you so taken in? The action here is childish; barely comic book standards. The hero "runs forward under a hail of bullets, careless of his life, making every shot count" - while he's running?!!... I'm laughing again as I write this. His opponent is hidden and stationary, but of course misses every time and is killed. He was doomed anyway, since beside being invulnerable the hero has a pistol of unlimited capacity, evidently borrowed from the movies. Shell casings "litter the area" (from a police revolver?). This particular bad guy lasts just long enough to gasp out one key word... Is this riveting? White knuckle? No, it's 1940's pulp.

The hero is another major problem. Since he's terminally unfriendly and abusive, with nothing to offer anyone either personally or in the mystery, the plot can only advance by having EVERYONE give him EVERYTHING he wants for NO REASON whatsoever. The peak of this inanity is when the notoriously vicious top bad guy drug lord simply tells him, gratis, exactly what he needs to know to attack the drug lord's organization! That entire scene is idiotic.

Then there's the endless psychological commentary. Mr. Mayor is evidently trained in this field (as he certainly is not in writing or in arms) so we get reams of it. Encounters go like this: "He saw her, and wondered why he hadn't thought A before, but realized it was because he truly felt B, although that was probably a reaction to C, since as a child he had been D, so rather than say E, he merely muttered F. She could only reply G, despite her desire to explore H, because she knew I, and understood that to reveal J would only drive him to K, which was too close to her L..." and on beyond zebra. Some hack thriller writers pad their books with recipes and meal descriptions; Mayor opts for psych and travelogue.

These aren't the only serious faults, but I've spent enough time trying to warn you. If you read this book anyway, you won't care about the plotholes, stereotypes, overdone tough guy talk, gratuitous Vietnam vet background, etc.

I would give the book 1.5 stars because there ARE worse authors in this field (Iris Johansen comes immediately to mind). But Amazon doesn't allow that, and the existing rating is far too high. So it's 1 star. I'm also going to discard the other Mayor book I picked up on spec. Fortunately, our town recycles.

Riveting Tour de Force.......2004-09-17

Of course, I know Archer Mayor; he is from Vermont and writes detective stories about cities and places I know. But I also know and have worked with Archer's brother. The best part of Archer Mayor's books is that he is such a great writer. He keeps us on the edge of our seats, so to speak. We are not certain just what will happen next. And, in "The Sniper's Wife", we now go to New York City and find new people and places to love.

Willy Kunkle, newly promoted to Detective in the Vermont Bureau of Investigation, receives a call none of us want to get. His ex-wife has died and the NYPD Blue is asking him to identify her. He drives to New York City and goes to the morgue first and identifies her, then to her apartment where he goes over everything. He finds not much but a mess the police have left. He finds a few pictures and keepsakes. He cleans the apartment as his ex-wife would want it. He remembers her and why they split. Willy was a drunk and beat his wife once and she left him, as she should. She became a junkie, but had cleaned up her act. He did not believe that his wife committed suicide as described. He believes that this is murder.

Willy goes on to meet the NYPD police and reads his ex-wife's record. He starts his investigation, but not without calling on his boss, Joe Gunther and Willy's new girl, Detective Sammie Martin. Thus his friends can deal with the NYPD as he goes about finding who murdered his wife.

This is a wonderful story of love and redemption in a different setting of murder and police work. Archer Mayor has given new life to Willy Kunkle and set us free from Joe Gunther for a few pages. This is as exciting a novel as any and so well written. Highly recommended. prisrob

Strong Series Continues: A Sniper's Wife by Archer Mayor.......2003-12-13

After thirteen Joe Gunther series novels, it is understandable that Archer Mayor might want to do something different. While many authors would ditch the old series and write something totally different, Archer Mayor decided to do something a bit different. Instead, he decided to devote a novel to the complex and enigmatic character often seen in the Joe Gunther series known as Willy Kunkle. For fans of the series, this is a fantastic development as the back-story on the very complex character of Willy Kunkle is finally revealed completely. For those new to the series, this is not a stand-alone book and as such should be read after reading the other novels in the series. While it could be read independently, to do so would ruin a large chunk of the series as these events are commented in this novel. These factors also make this very enjoyable book difficult to review without committing the same folly.

Newly installed as a Detective in the recently created Vermont Bureau of Investigation, Willy Kunkle receives a call that drags him back into a past that he thought he had left behind. The New York City police have found his divorce papers in an apartment rented by a woman who apparently died of a drug overdose. The investigators want him to come to New York and identify the body and handle all the usual details.

After identifying the body as his ex-wife Mary, Willy begins to nose into the case. Driven by guilt and anger over the past and present day events, Willy treats her death as his own to investigate. He spots inconsistencies with the story he is being given by the local Police and those are reinforced when he physically investigates the crime scene. Then, he begins to backtrack into her life and as he does so, not only must he confront various things from his past but he must also deal with a complex changing case that the local Police should not have been so quick to solve.

To say more in greater detail about this novel would simply blow this book as well as most of the series for any reader. This is a fast, intense read that answers a lot of questions about the character as well as providing a complex mystery. There are constant twists and turns that move the book steadily forward and the back-story is nicely woven into the novel. For fans of the series, this novel is a real treat and one that should not be missed.

Another great one!!!.......2003-08-15

Another great Archer Mayor book. However....I do belive he gets a little bit redundant with Willie Kunkle...we all know he's been down and out and keeps blaming himself for his own faults, but Archer doesn't have to remind us of this every time Willie meets somebody new, or gets into a new situation. I don't really belive that Joe could have saved a man that was so down on himself all these years....granted Joe "understands" Willie, but there comes a point....anyway, I also think the NYPD would have pulled the plug on ol' Willie. However I really enjoyed the story and am lookling forward to many more from Archer Mayor....(actually I like Joe Gunther...)

Intriguing Thriller.......2003-05-13

Archer Mayor's The Sniper's Wife is a gripping thriller and an enjoyable, compelling read. I have never read any of Mayor's novels before, so I cannot compare them to the rest of the Joe Gunther series, but as a newcomer, I thought this novel was excellent. Willy Kunkle is a man haunted by a number of ghosts, and at the outset of the novel, he gets a new ghost--his ex-wife, who is found dead of an apparent heroin overdose in New York City. Kunkle immediately heads to New York from Vermont to identify the body, but is immediately pulled into finding out the true cause of her death. Things don't add up for Kunkle and he embarks on a one man mission to discover what really happened. The novel reads like one of the better Law and Order episodes--you won't be able to put it down. Enjoy.

A GREAT BOOK IF YOU CAN FIND IT.......2000-07-26

This story grabs you from the beginning and keeps you along for the ride. The boys are wonderfully real. The youngest of three brothers innocently follows his brothers into a world beyond his imagining through his jealous wish to be included because he's too young to go out into the world and try to find a solution to a perplexing problem his country is experiencing. All of the interactions of the characters are fun. Not always happy and safe, but they make you smile nonetheless. The magic within is intrieguing, and the young magicians innocently dangerous.

Goblins made good.......1996-08-27

One of the best aspects of Cherryh's fiction is the close, almost claustrophobic environment she creates in almost every book. She certainly manages that here, with a fantasy tale with more folkloric and fairy-tale elements than her other fantasy novels. This is definitely one of her stronger fantasy novels. I tend to prefer her science fiction, generally having trouble getting into her fantasy work, but The Goblin Mirror is a notable exception. This is one of her best books - and I've read them all.

Wonderful Low Impact Cardio Program.......2006-01-12

Callanetics Fit Forever, although not my favorite of all the Callan Pinckney books, has had an impact on me. I tried to follow the cardio portion and had trouble. I was fortunate last year to travel to Chicago to take a wonderful CardioCallanetics class with the most graceful instructor, Mallory. (who was also the model in the book) I do not do other cardio programs because of my back and knees. However, this program was modified so that I could keep up with the pace and get the most benefit. A beautifully choreographed exercise routine! I do the basic and super Callanetics exercises regularly and I am hoping a cardio video will be available soon.

Very Effective but w/out pictures difficult to follow.......2005-06-16

I did Callanetics back in the 80s when I gained my freshman 15 (more like 25) and it was amazing - my body firmed up and melted away and I got down to a much smaller size without much other effort. I don't know why I stopped. I bought Fit Forever a couple of years ago and put it down because there were no pictures like the original book. The pictures were so helpful and I had a hard time remembering exactly what to do. Reading and exercising at the same time is a very hard thing to do. So back on the bookshelf it went.

I picked up the book last week and started to use it, pictures or not. I'm on my 4th workout and I already notice my clothes are looser and I'm still doing beginner workouts. I've since bought a used version of the original book and the VHS for the visual aids. I also believe the workout in the original had different levels of exercise. I'm excited to get my book and tape. I really feel taller, leaner, healthier and my back feels much stronger. I'd recommend the original book to the Fit Forever though.

Callanetics Fit Forever is a collection must for the Callanetics 'family' of followers. The cardio portion is a welcome addition to the already phenomenal exercise program. I like that she has used a Callanetics instructor as her model in the book. Having done Callanetics for the past 8 years I can say this exercise program has made a difference in my life. It is truly one exercise program for all ages, any body! Can't wait for her next book!

NOT UP TO CALLAN'S USUAL HIGH STANDARD.......2001-04-17

I so looked forward to this book as Callan had not done a book in years. I still have her original book which started the whole Callanetics thing - it's out of print so thank God we have her videos. Unfortunately, this book falls short of her high standard. One big dissapointment is that the exercises are demonstrated by a model, not by Callan herself. Most of the photos are small and not all that easy to follow. In general the book has no pizzaz, and is geared towards the maturing woman and even advices on diet (the usual low fat type). I passed the book on to a friend who was interested, but I do not recommend it.

Beautiful Photos and Informative Descriptions.......2004-03-03

This book is a huge step up from the Heacock & Johnson 5000 Open Salts. The photography is outstanding and the descriptions are informative with current pricing. The authors did a wonderful job of publishing a reference book for open salt collectors which complements the H&J but focuses on higher end salts and includes very little duplication from those in the H&J. This book was long overdue for the serious open salt collector. Thanks for all the hard work to make it happen.

Exceptional Beauty and Information.......2004-03-03

I must agree with the previous "Raves" about this book. I do feel that the new collector can benefit from it also - If I had been aware of such examples of open salts and the information given in this book - perhaps I would not have passed up some finer pieces in the beginning or made some of the mistakes in my early purchases. I have been a basic pattern piece collector but this book has kindled new interests in my collecting desires. I would strongly suggest this book be owned by all Open Salt Collectors - new or seasoned!!!

Newest book in field of salt collecting.......2004-03-02

This book is a "must have" for long time collectors. For new collectors, it might be a bit expensive but well worth looking at for the information and comprehensive categories of open salt collecting. The photographs of salts and the price and rarity guide beneath each set of pictures is invaluable. Many books on open salt collecting are out of print or have outdated prices. This book is a wonderful feast for the eyes and a great deal of time and effort went into the gathering and photographing of collector's salts.

Open Salt Compendium.......2004-03-02

The previous standard reference book for open salt collectors was Heacock and Johnson's 5000 Open Salts, dating to 1982, still a great basic book, especially for pattern glass. This new entry in the field is outstanding for its clear, beautiful pictures, informative descriptions, and recent price guide included within the text. It does, as one reviewer said, include many high end salts like Steuben, Daum Nancy, and Tiffany that may not be found on the beginning collector's shelf, but it's a wonderful look at what's out there in open salts, and there are many that the average collector certainly may hope to own and even have in the display cabinet. I have found it helpful, even invaluable, as I buy salts for my collection and try to evaluate what I see on the internet or in shops. There was a crying need for a new entry in the open salt collectors' book field. Definitely a 5 star book!

Great Resource and fun projects.......2006-10-26

Of course, I would start out by raving about Denyse Schmidt's designs, which are very appealing and modern, so that makes this kit just fun to look at. But I was very impressed with the instruction manual that came with this. It's actually a really great resource for beginner quilters on basic techniques. It also has photos, which a lot of other 'how to' instruction books do not.

The projects in this book are very manageable for newer quilters. They are small and easy so that you can finish the projects in a short amount of time. I've already made the cute coaster set in about two evenings.

The best thing about this kit is that they give you a pattern sheet that you can photocopy at 200% and you actually have the pattern right there. Overall, I'm really enjoying this kit!

Looked Great.......2006-07-14

This kit looked great, however I bought the book "Denyse Schmidt Quilts" and the two items were almost identical. All the patterns were the same. The only difference was that this kit had the materials for the pillow. But I LOVED the book and its patterns!

This book shows a great variety of window treatments! Great for getting ideas! You probably want to have a basic background for sewing already if you're using this book.

Sunset Curtaiins.......2007-02-11

The written directions were not always clear. The illustrations did not correspond to the written notations. I was unable to use this book when making my lined drapes. I had to resort to another source.

Excellent book, easy to use even for a beginner.......2006-06-15

An avid do-it-yourselfer that loves to work on decorating projects around the house writes this review. I purchased the first edition 20 years ago, and have been using both editions of the book for some time. I learned to make window treatments from this book. I live in an old Victorian home with 10-foot ceilings. When we first moved in, a long time ago, we couldn't afford to pay to have drapes custom made for 30 windows and no one sold them stock that long, so I decided to do it myself. The first edition of this book was my only reference. Surprisingly, all went well and according to plan.

Since that first necessary experience, I now make window treatments because I enjoy the process. I like to have control over the fabric, the embellishments and the lining and interlining. Since I redecorate periodically I don't want to waste money paying a seamstress to do something that is fairly simple. The beauty of sewing your own window treatments is that most the seams are straight and flat which simplifies the process.

The book covers most window treatments that you will want to tackle. I have found that there are many patterns available in the fabric stores that cover the atypical treatments that are not in this book. If you have a window where you want to let in light but obscure the view try the bottom up shades. They were much easier than I expected them to be.

For those of you that are new to window treatments I will warn you about a couple of things:
1. It takes much longer than you anticipate, probably double what you expect.
2. Measure your windows twice so there are no surprises
3. Always measure your fabric and lining twice before cutting
4. Drapes that are lined and interlined will always hang better and last longer
5. Roman blinds are very simple if you use ring tape
6. Send your window treatments to the dry cleaner to avoid shrinkage

If you have patience and time, you will enjoy the process.

Not for Beginners.......2005-04-14

I found this book to be very difficult to follow. The writers assumed a certain amount of prior knowledge of both "sewing jargon" and technique. The window coverings were also quite complicated. For a true beginner, I would recommend "Window Basics" by Better Homes and Gardens.

This book was passed down to me the night before I ws going to protest Bush in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It has many Posters that relate to any war or Bush protest. The best part is, you can reproduce these images for your own personal use. The posters keep their quallity when enlarging, and the binding is perfect for photocopying. Need a protest Poster? disappointed.......2004-06-18

I ordered this as a gift and returned it due to some of the crude messages,foul language and pictures. It's an interesting book to look through but not what I had in mind for a book supporting peace.

If you've seen Bad Lieutenant or The Piano, you've seen all there is to see of Harvey Keitel--but what do you really know about him? Although Marshall Fine's biography lacks the intimate insights that direct involvement with his subject would entail, he does an excellent job of collating what Keitel has said about his work--and what others have said about Keitel's performances--over the years, from his electrifying "debut" in Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets through the fallow '80s to the gradual comeback that culminated with his performance as Mr. White in Reservoir Dogs.

Most significantly to Fine's credit, he takes seriously Keitel's desire to have his career viewed as a development of craft and a journey of self-discovery, and thus analyzes Keitel's performances (and the circumstances behind them) with sensitivity. Although this emphasis is based in part on editorial necessity--there's simply more documentation of Keitel's professional life than his personal one--Fine does rather well with the available resources. harvey keitel - he just keeps getting better.......2000-08-07

the only way "harvey keitel, the art of darkness" could have been any better is if he had written it himself. too bad mr. fine didn't have more to say about his personal life but maybe that's the way mr. keitel would have wanted it. he is such a gifted versatile actor who only gets better with age, it's only natural to wonder about his personal life. i hope some day he will find the time to write his own biography. he has given many academy award winning performances in his career and i hope some day to see him win one.

Rehashes old material.......1999-08-05

I was really disappointed with this book. There wasn't one piece of information in it that I didn't already know; and many pieces of information that I know that weren't in the book. In addition, regardless of what actors say (and Mr. Keitel has often said this) about the characters they play not reflecting their personal lives, it's not true. A person's personal life is always reflected on the screen; it's what makes the actor able to project the character they are playing. Therefore, I wanted to know more about Mr. Keitel's personal life so I could get a better picture of his professional life. I wanted to know more about his past and current relationships with Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro. Perhaps I should write my own book.

A Mere Peek at a Genius.......1999-01-13

When I saw the word 'unauthorized' on the front of this book, I bought it thinking I would find out some real facts about this wonderful actor. Instead, I was spoon fed glossy peeks into what makes Keitel tick, most of which I could have looked up myself. I believe this author was too scared to write the truth. Who can blame him? This book is nothing more than a big disappointment. I never even found out why Copolla really kicked Keitel out of the Phillipines. That alone would have been worth the price of the book.

Very Enlightening!!!.......1998-06-22

I was always under the impression that Mr. Keitel was a somewhat "dark" man with a lot of demons(who doesn't have some of those demons to deal with?)He just was lucky enough to find himself an outlet to deal with those facets of his life. It is said that Mr. Keitel will only talk about what he wants to talk about, about his personal life etc., but if you look closely he is telling you a lot about himself through the characters that he protrays. (I thought this about Mr. Keitel before I read the book). Mr. Keitel has a God given talent and he has used it well. To entertain us and to understand himself. And maybe even to help us deal with our own demons. I know he helped me with some of mine. Thank you Mr. Keitel.

This is a refreshing way to spend your time listening to some of the best interviews from the show. I like the show but sometimes don't have time to catch it on NPR. This audio set gives me lots of the memorable interviews I've heard or partially heard over the years. It's a great collection of some of the folks who are major influences in their work. The inquisitive and probing questions of Terry Gross really open up conversations with the likes of Tracy Ullman and Dennis Franz, they sound like us. These are wonderful snippets of real life.
