Finally, quick recipes! Some of the recipes you get in other books have way too much prep time or are too complicated to make. I think this is the best resource for someone with diabetes who has to watch sugar/carb intake. I hope more versions of this book comes out.
high-carb/low-fat.......2001-09-12
There seems to be two camps developing in the type 2
comunity, those who follow the traditional ADA high-carb
and low-fat way-of-life and those who follow the
low-carb, higher protein/fat way. This book is in the
high-carb group. Since I'm keeping my BG's 2hrs post
meal near the pre-meal targets (
<120), the meals here
did not help me. Your milage may vary.
Easily lives up to its name........2001-08-21
I am so pleased to have found this book. Type II runs in our family, and I'm trying to prevent it, by being careful about carbs, and balancing them with protein. All the balancing work is done for you. Great to find a cookbook with easy recipes that taste good, and you won't have to eat it all week! It was just what I had been looking for. I've only had it a few days, and have already tried several recipes. And these easy recipes make you realize how easy it could be to create your own variations. As a singleton, I'm glad things serve one or two, and it gives me a better idea of what a right-sized portion should be.

Two of my best friends are diabetics! We often eat our meals together and I was having a tough time trying to find a good recipe that I could use and yet have the food taste good! I love this book....it is so easy to use. Anyone that does not want to fuss....should buy this book! I think it is wonderful!

These no-fuss recipes are great for ANYONE! You don't have to have diabetes to try these great tasting recipes. And it was such a pleasure to have easy to prepare recipes with amounts to serve one or two people-what a great way to try out a recipe! It is much simpler to double up or increase the serving size of recipes than to divide or reduce a recipe. I think this book should be re-titled to "No-fuss Recipes for One or Two"

Difficult to buy authentic books in UK and the books I have bought in US I have difficulty getting some ingredients. I picked this book up in Bookshop in St Andrew's Scotland and have been looking for copies for years. I am very greatful to have found it on the Net and through Amazon I will buy 2 more copies as presents Great little book.

This is a wonderful cookbook. Originally purchased it for a gift and am keeping it for myself and ordering more...Easy to read and understand and preperation time is short...recipes everyone likes..Great for teens, beginning cooks, and senior citizens like myself trying to find ways to use leftovers and great for creating interesting meals...

Brief but enjoyable........2006-12-27
As previous reviewers noted it is a brief book. It is however an enjoyable one. Where many books about books devolve into a "how much I paid and what it's worth" book this one rarely does. When he gets into the "how much I paid and what it's worth" it is almost always because there is a point behinds it. Mostly this book is the story of the people behind the books (authors, booksellers, other book snakes, etc). The only slightly annoying characteristic of this book is that it has a few too many pictures. Almost as if to fluff the book out a little. Certainly as someone who has a love of books he should know better.
Despite its length and pictures, I look forward to reading his second book.

but for the asking price, it's too brief. However, for those who love to "book search" it's delightful to read of the author's finds. Highly recommended, elegiac and wry.

This is a book about books. The author describes some of his more interesting finds in the book world.
This book was an interesting read. The author's wondefully breezy writing style was enchanting and fun to read. His anecdotes on various book finds made you feel as though you were right next to him.
So why the 3 stars?
This book took me exactly 2 hours to read! It is compact and has so few pages, that I felt a little discouraged from the start.
This author truly is entertaining with his stories and if his career spans over 40 years, surely he could have added a couple more (like maybe a 100 or so more) pages to the book. Just as I was starting to really get into it, the book ends.
I was also put off by the cost of the book. $20.00 for 2 hours of reading is expensive!
However, if you like books on books that are a fun read, this is the book for you.

Not quite what I'd expected, but great anyway.......2007-04-21
I wouldn't have thought a book about stoves would be such interesting reading, but this really is a good book. I bought it in hopes that I'd be able to attempt to build a stove myself. That did not happen, in fact I'm not even sure what type of stove I'd like. However, the book has increased my faith in a wood stove keeping my home comfortable, and be environmentally sound. I liked the writing style, which is pretty rare for a book of this type. There were times when I couldn't put it down. Honestly, I was on this page again to sell my book, but now I find I'm not ready to let it go, so I'm writing a review instead.
While it is old and could probably be updated, the art of the wood stove is also old, so much of the most valuable information may be old as well. Certainly, history has a lot of lessons to teach us about masonry stoves. Also, the book talks about past mistakes of masonry stoves, so if you're thinking about building your own, this would be good reading.

As mentioned, the book is not a modern day catalog, but a historical look at masonry stoves dating back to the first harvesting of fire by humans. Fascinating look at the historical developments, especially around the middle ages
to the nineteenth centtury. Also includes many examples from non-western cultures. Many informative diagrams and photos portraying the myriad styles. Appropriate for the uninitiated.

After reading through this book I was left somewhat disapointed. What is covered in the book is well written, but the publication date was nearly 20 yrs ago, and the book needs updating. More actual pictures of masonry heaters and less old pictures would be helpful. One is better off visiting the masonry heater association

This book is an excellent book from the historical point of view. The book is full of excellent illustrations as well as B&W photogaphs. I do wish their had been better photos as well as some color photos as well. This is a great book and really teaches you the details of the functionality of Masonry Stoves.
Lacking current examples and photos.......2005-07-08
This book has a very deep history of heating with wood and even delves into the history of fire. I too was very disappointed to realize that there were very few photographs. And, equally disappointing was a lack of discussion of modern day masonry stoves. There wasn't even any description or anything about the big beautiful masonry stove that is pictured on the cover.
Its been helpful and informative in that I have now learned just how these stoves work and a bit of how they do not work.

Very Good Book about Wooden Toy Making.......1999-11-19
I've had this book for over a year and used it as the basis for a number of toys I've created. The instuctions are clear and concise. The plans are easy to follow and include scaled drawings for each toy. The author also includes a very useful discussion of materials and finishes appropriate for building children's toys and design ideas for building your own animated creations. These sections alone justify the purchase of the book. Be aware that most of the designs in the book are copyrighted and if you wish to build them for commercial purposes you will need to contact the author. My favorite plan is for a very simple to make wooden rattle based on a traditional folk art design (this is not copyrighted). I've built six rattles and presented them as gifts to new parents and have been delighted to see how much infants love to play with them. This is a great source for wooden toy makers.
My favourite woodworking book.......1999-09-01
Whenever I am looking to make a toy for someone, this book is invariably the first one I always reach for. The plans have heaps of detail and processes for making the toys are very well thought out. These toys are not only animated, but appear to be alive, David has put a lot of effort into making these toys realistic and the movement fun for children (and lots of us not so young). As an added bonus to heaps of great plans, David has gone to great pains to talk about the processes behind designing and building a good toy, this books is worth it for this alone.

Fred Stone was one of America's most versatile and talented of Broadway's colorful entertainers. Audiences quickly discovered he could do anything and everything, from tightrope walking and acrobatics to song-and-dance, musical comedies, and straight drama. This work chronicles his extraordinary life and career. He was born in a log cabin August 19, 1873, in Valmont, Colorado, to a family that was part of the covered-wagon migration into the virtually unknown West. He joined a traveling circus at age 11 and two years later, joined a different one as a self-taught tightrope walker. During his teens, Stone performed on the variety stage, and at age 22, met Dave Montgomery, with whom he performed for over twenty years, including Broadway musicals, notably as the scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. After Montgomery's tragic death in 1917, Stone continued to perform and shared his continued success with his closest friend Will Rogers, and Annie Oakley, Broadway producer Charles Dillingham, Western artists Charles Russell and Ed Borein, and author Rex Beach. Stone appeared in some 18 movies, from 1918 to 1940, including such western classics as The Westerner and Trail of the Lonesome Pine. In 1950, he retired from show business and during the last years of his life suffered from increasing blindness and heart trouble. He died at his Los Angeles home in 1959.
