Book Description
"A harrowing, exciting, and in the end very satisfying war romance."
HARPER'S
A TOWN LIKE ALICE tells of a young woman who miraculously survived a Japanese "death march" in World War II, and of an Australian soldier, also a prisoner of war, who offered to help her--even at the cost of his life....
Customer Reviews:
Entreprenuerial romance.......2007-08-27
If you only read the back of the book, you will believe it is much grimmer than it is. Only part of this book is about the war. Ther rest is about taking risks to acheive an equitable relationship. It is, in many ways, a very feminist romance novel. At no point do we feel like anyone needs anyone else.
Also, if you have a geek for small businesses, you should check it out.
If you loved this book, you might also investigate Nevil Shute's "Trustee from the Toolroom".
Not worth the postage.......2007-01-18
This is a so-so novel on which paying postage about equal to the cost of the book isn't worth while.
A strong women, 1200 miles in the jungle, and trying to go back.......2006-12-30
Jean Paget inherits some money. She visits a village that had helped her during the war. She then decides to go to a small town and find a soldier named Joe Harmen who had helped her during the war. This part of the story is really part two in her life.
The story of the war and remembering what happened is the first part of her life in this book. In World War 2 she was one of 80 women as well as some children that were captured by the Japanese. They were marched over 1200 miles back and forth through jungles. The women survive in part because of the march and because no one really wanted them. Their captors really did not want to hurt or be thought of as being willing to hurt women and children. The Japanese soldiers had plenty of problems of their own. The soldiers try to find every way to avoid having to deal with the women but they seemed trapped with each other.
During the march Jean meets an Australian Soldier named Joe who is also a prisoner. He tries to help and as a result he seems to have been left dying for his act as punishment.
The book offers a lot of contrasts. Going back after the war demonstrates her decision to try to help and make a difference. To do that she tried making over the town where she finds her old friend into a " Town Like Alice". Jeans impact on the people in this book is the real impact that she in her life has made. The day to day impact she made on the lives of everyone she comes in contact with while marching through the jungles may not have been conscious decisions to help people but those efforts made a lot of difference. More than anything that she can do with her inheritance, her personal impact on people seems to be the more meaningful message.
Captured by the enemy during wartime is not easier for the women and children but it is different. Few books tell a story of war from this viewpoint. Jean's impact is the real story in this book. The events from the Jungle to an effort later in life to "go back" are the backdrop for her impact.
Great Book.......2006-02-25
Normally I would read the book first and then see the movie. In this case, I saw the movie first (the Australian movie) and just had to read the book. The book takes you through the horrors of Japanese occupation and internment and shows how love can help you resolute and resiliant. A great read and a must for your llibrary.
Good read!.......2005-12-17
I loved this book. A real easy read and one you'll find hard to put down. My only one complaint is that the leading female character was a little "gushy" with too many "Oh Joe's" which irked me somewhat. The overall story is fantastic though.

Book Description
Second novel of the series. When an ancient pact is invoked, the Deathwatch Space Marines must put aside their prejudices to battle alongside the alien eldar to protect the galaxy from an even greater menace.
Book Description
Essence #1 bestselling author Renita J.Weems draws inspiration from the Song of Solomon in the Bible to examine the role passion plays in women's lives. Many readers are familiar with the Song of Solomon as a series of love poems. In WHATMATTERSMOST, Weems proves it can be interpreted as something much more. Using the work of Scripture as inspiration, she offers 10 lessons that teach women how to discover what their passions are, and how to create direction and meaning in their lives. Byclosely examining this topic, the author helps readers to understand that passion is not something awakened by other people, but an inner source of energy that flows out of every aspect of one's being. In doing so, Weems empowers women to fight against stereotypes and ignore the conventional way of doing things in order to find their own happiness and joy.
Customer Reviews:
Its never too late to improve your quality of life.......2005-12-15
Renita, pulled together all her wisdom for women and poured into this book. It's her best ever. Its for the teenager coming into her own to the senior woman who still has unanswered questions about her choices in the past and the future. Every woman of color should have this book. It's a right of passage. Its the best gift you can give a sistah friend.
Excellence Stained by Prejudice.......2005-02-19
Professor Renita Weems is one of the most original thinkers on the Song of Solomon. She courageously and correctly identifies the poet as a woman protesting the cultural boundaries of her day.The best part of the book is the way in which the author explains why the lessons in this ancient love poem are so relevant today in the lives of "modern women" facing day to day problems.
Nevertheless, the work is stained by prejudice. The author
insists over and over again that the heroine of the poem is
a "black-skinned woman" without ever considering that the
reference to "blackness" may be metaphorical as it is in the Book of Job. Indeed in other parts of the Song of Solomon, the maiden is called "white" in Hebrew, she is described as "fair", and her neck is compared to an "ivory tower." A better analysis than jumping to the conclusion that the Shulamite is African is to say that the Shulamite is both white and black, the colors of the moon. This would link the heroine of the poem to the symbol of the eternal feminine.
Finding What Matters.......2004-06-27
In WHAT MATTERS MOST, Renita Weems takes an in-depth look at the Song of Solomon from the Old Testament of the Bible. Early on, she notes that this particular book is unique in several ways; it is essentially made up of love poems that might be considered by some to be bordering on erotic and God is never explicitly mentioned. Another important way in which the Song of Solomon is unique is the fact that it is the only book of the Bible that is predominantly told from a woman's point of view. Like many other women in the Bible, we don't learn a lot of biographical information about the Shulammite who narrates most of the Song of Solomon. Weems argues however, that the poetry itself provides us with enough information to know that this unnamed Shulammite woman is one of the earliest examples of a strong, black, Christian woman.
Aside from providing the history, background, and controversy surrounding the various interpretations of the Song of Solomon, the author uses the personality characteristics she derived about the Shulammite woman to create a blue print for women of color. This blueprint will help women learn to love themselves more fully and to truly take to heart the things that should matter most in life. She argues that as women, so often we get so caught up in helping other people and being what they need us to be that we neglect our individual need to grow and thrive. She goes on to note that in order to be open to the love that God has for us we must be willing to break the mold, shatter stereotypes, and embrace all aspects of ourselves. She covers such subjects as identity, balance, sexuality, body image and overcoming adversity, using the Song of Solomon and her own experiences to illustrate her key points. At the end of each chapter she poses questions for self-reflection which she encourages readers to write about on their own.
This is the kind of book that will make you think. I found myself thinking "Wow! I do that all the time!" While I may not agree with all of her reasoning, I enjoyed the fact that it challenged me both mentally and spiritually. This book would be an excellent book to discuss as a group and is sure to incite some heated debates. (...)

Definite must have for low carb eaters!.......2004-04-06
Every low carb eater should own this book. The recipes are simple and straightforward and use only two specialized ingredients -- Splenda and Expert Foods ThickenThin Not Starch. This book does a good job of teaching cooking *principles* and *techniques* and how to convert high-carb recipes to low carb. The editing is *atrocious* -- lots of misspellings left in, and my chief gripe is that he gives a carb count per serving without always telling the serving size. Despite these problems, this book is indispensable and I hope the author does more!

Waste of Money.......2007-06-16
I have many Matchbox reference books. This is the one I would use least of all because it is incomplete, poorly set out, poorly referenced, and overall gives the appearance of something which has been tossed together because it was MB material surplus to Vol 1. In other words, a total waste of buyer's money. So be cautioned people - don't go there.

Great resource book.......2000-06-03
I think this is a great book. I just started quilting and it has answered all my questions so far. It doesn't have any patterns, so you have to start with your own. It explains each step of the way from picking fabrics and how to cut them to the finishing touches. It also shows you how to hand quilt or machine quilt which is nice. Throughout the book there are lots of tips and shortcuts (which is especially nice for novices like me).
Book Description
The ancient Chinese art of feng shui is becoming increasingly popular in the West. That's because many of feng shui's principles are just common sense. One of the easiest, most popular, and most important feng shui Âcures is clutter control and organization. Several best-sellers have already been written on this topic, but none with the easy time promise this book offers. Patterned after 10-Minute Feng Shui, this book will offer hundreds of ways to use the ancient Chinese art of placement to clear the detritus of a busy life and create a calm, harmonious environment.
Customer Reviews:
It is what it is, where it is.......2006-01-24
I confess: I am a person of clutter. I am not a feng shui* devotee, indeed, this book was my introduction. For me, Jeff Campbell's 'Clutter Control : Putting Your Home on a Diet' is still The Best, but this book has its moments, and is a good refresher for New Year's resolutioners. Sorry, Shui sisters. I haven't got time, money or inclination to build a Bagua octagon of Chez Tundra - so my "missing gua" must remain AWOL. The kitchen is where the kitchen is - not to be confused with my Home Office or the bath. Still, the remaining chapters of Skye's Shui offer inspiration and reinforcement for ever-ongoing vigilance against the accumulation of clutter. /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer
* For those as new to the Chinese art of Feng Shui as I, (I live up here in the Tundra,) the author explains: "literally translated, feng shui means wind and water. Wind and water, as we know, can be harnessed to produce energy. Feng shui also allows us to control and direct natural forces and utilize their energy. The principle force fend shui considers the ch'i (pronounced chee), the life-giving energy of the universe that flows through everything - our homes, the Earth, our bodies." So, the convergence for this reviewer is inspiration to shovel more stuff out the door!
Great Advice!.......2005-07-18
Easy to read and makes a nice gift. The Feng Shui way of getting rid of clutter is different from the usual organization books! If you are overwhelmed with clutter, this book is a great motivator. I am taking a huge load to Goodwill tomorrow! Enjoy!
Clutter Control Made Easy.......2005-01-28
Reading this book was my introduction to the Feng Shui philosophy. Most of the book has short paragraphs that will help you reduce clutter immediately. This is a great book for just reading a paragraph or two at a time. Read this book; you'll benefit from it!
Product Description
With 10-minute Clutter Control you can throw out the bad, organize the good, and attact the new luck, love, and harmony that accompany a well-managed life. A whole new way of looking at clutter the Feng Shui Cure

Book Description
Ann Hood was firmly rooted in the physical world-practical, realistic, and skeptical about many things in life at the cusp of the second millennium. But even so, she traveled from Rhode Island to El Santuario de Chimayo in New Mexico to bring home a miracle for her dying father. Ultimately, Ann Hood discovered the courage to accept what had come her way, and an appreciation for the faith in miracles. Do Not Go Gentle is a profound journey into the nature of miracles, and one woman's revelatory reflection upon her spiritual heritage.
Download Description
Described as "an emotional genius" for her fiction, Ann Hood gives us her first nonfiction book, a poignant account of the search for miracles and transcendence during times of great need.
Customer Reviews:
I found I couldn't put this book down.......2007-08-30
Once I got into the book I had a hard time going to work, or doing anything but reading it morning, noon and night. I liked it a lot.
Well intentioned..........2006-10-26
*Spoilers*
Ann Hood's "Do Not Go Gentle" has good intentions. It is a sad story: the author's beloved father is dying and the author goes off in search of a miracle. She believes she gets one when blessed dirt from New Mexico seems to cure a tumor. Sadly, the tumor's disappearance isn't enough to save him. He dies anyway.
The book works best as a portrait of fathers and daughters. I'm not sure I've ever read about (or experienced) a father/daughter bond like this one. But at times the memoir reads too much like an overly idealized eulogy. It's hard to believe anyone could be as perfect as Hood makes out her father to be. There is also a poignant section on the author's deceased brother. Unquestionably she has suffered unimaginable loss. But, I'm sorry to say, that doesn't make this a good book.
My biggest complaint about this book is that its conclusions seem forced. Hood ties a family trip to Italy with a belief in St. Anthony... she prays to him and finds her contact lens. You've got to be kidding me. A faith journey of 1000 miles begins with this single step? I doubt it. More likely the author wants to end the book on a high note.
emotional, difficult quest for faith.......2005-09-06
This book is the memoir of an Italian-American woman's emotional, difficult quest for faith. Strong themes are family, the death of her father, the supernatural, the Old Country, and miracles. The story is engrossing and educational with some slight repetition, especially toward the end, that could have been done away with by a skilled editor. Recommended.
Too personal.......2003-04-29
I had a hard time extrapolating the author's experiences into a useful context. She is a talented writer, and her prose is easy to follow. But her accounts are a bit too personal, and at times i felt almost like i was reading her diary. I was most disappointed at the end, when her search for explanations to her father's death takes her around Europe. For one thing, how could she pretend to find answers for faith? What really killed me was the episode with the contact lens: "If you believe it is there, you will find it". I couldn't help but think about Kevin Costner: "If you build it, they will come".
The Journey of Faith.......2001-02-02
I met Ann Hood one November night at Baker Books in Dartmouth, MA, when she came to give a reading of "Do Not Go Gentle". It was enjoyable. As an Italian, I could identify with Mama Rose, and her methods to ward off the effects of "mal'occhio" (evil eye) for my grandmother did the same thing, only with drops of olive oil. Nonna passed away last April, but the memory lingers. As a religious priest, I could identify with her Catholicism, and I am sure the Franciscan brothers also present had much to share with her that evening in that regard. I regret that I didn't spend some time with her. After her dialogue with the Franciscans, I just stepped up, asked her to dedicate the brand new book to me, and left. I had not read the book yet. Feeling dumb, I did not pursue a conversation. I enjoyed the work. It reads smoothly, like a river. The text is not taxing to the reader, but is easy to follow, taking the reader to many places, stories and ideas. The story is the faith journey of a woman, who is trying to square the death of her father with her faith system. Faith is more than a packaged set of beliefs. Faith is that sometimes. Dogmatic faith. Other times faith is dynamic. Ann Hood's faith journey is to answer the question about how her father's death relates to her sense of meaning. And journey she does to many places, externally and internally. It is a human journey, maybe at times a little wrapped up in a sentiment, or in magic, or superstition. Still it is a human journey. And a theological journey, if we can remember that the classical definition of theology is "fides quarens intellectum" (faith seeking understanding). I finished the book hoping that she would at some point visit her Catholicism again. I am grateful for her portrait of Italian life. I like her sense of humor. I would have liked to read more about her mother. While I am taking basic Italian classes on Federal Hill every Saturday morning until June, I hope to run into her at Tony's, or Dolce Vita or Venda Ravioli. Now I have a few questions to raise. They would go well with some bruschetta and red wine.

On one hand, Dr. Alvin Forman is a soft-spoken allergist, single father, and suburban homeowner. On the other hand, and to his own bafflement, he's also a serial killer.
A former child prodigy, Alvin has struggled all his life to reconcile his desire to save humanity with his desire to destroy it. Now a respected community member, he finds himself meticulously and ruthlessly dismembering patients, loved ones, and neighbors between administering allergy shots and raising his troubled teenaged daughter. But Alvin is beyond suspicion. Even Gloria, an evangelical Christian neighbor who hopes to convert Alvin as well as see him happily remarried, is clueless about just how much his soul actually needs saving.
What would push a doctor who has sworn to protect life to kill? What demons haunt such a troubled mind? And what happens when he loses the only thing that matters to him? These are the questions explored in this tension-filled, psychological thriller. A why done it? (as opposed to a who done it?), Do Not Go Gentle affirms modern forensic science's claim that there is no typical serial murderer; indeed, even the sweetest next-door neighbor may have a heinous hidden hobby.

A Doctor's secret.......2007-03-21
Having read and enjoyed 2 other novels by this author, (Times Fool and The Bliss of Solitude) I was anxious to read this latest book. I was not prepared for the subject matter of the story. It took me quite by surprise that a doctor who pledged his life to healing, would be capable of destroying lives, as was the case of Alvin Forman. Everything seemed so 'normal'- his practice, his typical teenage daughter, a neighbor who intrudes on his life with 'good intentions'. I could see that he was possessed by something that he had little control over, so therefore he maintained as normal a life as possible. The reality of it is that the author shows how one can fit so well into society, yet be the demon we all fear.
Good character placement.......2007-01-02
Reviewed by Joanne Benham for Reader Views (12/06)
Alvin Forman decided at the age of fifteen to follow in his father's footsteps and become a doctor. But he had big ambitions, big dreams. He would wipe out all the diseases in the world and become a household name like Jonas Salk and Louis Pasteur. But as he grew older, he realized that no one person would ever be able to affect a cure for the devastating diseases prevalent today and, since he was not a team player, he decided to become an allergist and set up his own shop.
At the age of 41, Dr. Forman had a nice business that he ran from his home. His wife had left him ten years previously and he shared his home with his teen-age daughter Miranda. He was still a loner and spent his spare time erecting a storage shed, that he called "The Pyramid," in his back yard. There he collected and stored memorabilia about his family's life as well as necessities he thought he might need in his next life.
But Dr. Forman had another strange quirk, one that was especially strange for a doctor. He killed people. What would cause a seemingly normal, above-average intelligence man to go around killing people? Dr. Forman can't figure it out. All he knows is that a strange feeling comes over him sometimes when he is with someone. His heart palpitates, his body trembles and the ache doesn't leave him until someone is dead. Then all he needs to do is chop up the body and dispose of it with the rest of his medical waste.
As the police search for clues on the missing people, they enlist the services of Dr. Forman. How handy is it to have a doctor available for consultation right in the neighborhood where the disappearances are happening? An added bonus is that the Dr. knows some of these people personally and could provide valuable insight into what might motivate them to disappear.
The story is told from the point of view of several different people...Alvin, Miranda, Gloria, his busybody, Bible-toting neighbor, who's determined to bring him to God and Madeleine, the woman Gloria has handpicked to be the next Mrs. Forman.
I disliked three of the four main characters in this story intensely. The author did a good job setting them up, laying out their strengths and weaknesses. Another nice touch was that you knew the murderer from the beginning. What you don't know until you get further into "Do Not Go Gentle" is why he's doing it.
One thing I found rather amusing is that two of the characters are copy editors for a major medical journal and this book could use their services. The author needs to do a thorough proofreading before the next printing.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Book.......1999-07-08
I guess I'm kind of qualified to write this review because Herb's a friend of mine. He's a professor of African Studies now at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service, and a world-renowed expert on mercenaries. Most of his students don't know he ever went through what he went through, but even without it, he's still one of the most popular, most beloved professors at Georgetown. This book just proves what a good man he really is. Highly recommended.
Distinctive, inspiring tale of fighting disease and winning........1997-10-07
I read this in 1981 and return for few line review, 16 years later. Why? Because I still strongly recall the great encouragement it provided to me during that time. Afflicted with cancer, Mr. Howe, a man in his 20's, fights back w/the 90's moniker of a in-your-face tenacity. From his title, very heavy excercise, and a killer positive attitude to get IT before it gets him carries this work that would inspire many, if not all, present day motivational speakers. More than a biography, its strength is in the achieving what one once thought of as impossible.
