A Vow to Cherish touched me deeply--for many reasons. To me, this story is about having no regrets and allowing God to work things out in our lives with His perfect timing. I remember seeing the movie when it first came out and holding my breath as I watched John fall in love with Julia. I recall the same conflicting feelings when I read this book. Part of me wanted John to be happy with Julia. I truly felt for the guy. Part of me also cared deeply about his commitment to his wife.
The author did a fabulous job taking a difficult situation and covering it with flesh. The emotion and the loneliness were real as was the temptation both John and Julia experienced. Many people would justify John and Julia's relationship outside of marriage--especially for John. I hurt for the man. My mother was bedridden with MS for twenty years and my father cared for her until the very end. He cherished her and remained faithful when so many men in the same situations dumped their spouses when they could no longer perform their wifely duties.
John Brighton honored his vow to cherish his wife until they parted at her death. I'm convinced it made all the difference for his enduring happiness. John could then marry Julia free from guilt and knowing he gave his wife his undivided love and attention to the very end--once he overcame the temptation to vault his flesh into a forbidden zone that he would end up regretting later.
I've never read a book that more vividly portrays the deep pain of loneliness and all of the issues that go with it. My heart swelled and my throat tightened more than once through this beautiful story. I loved it!
Read the reissue even if you've read the original.......2006-07-27
Loved the first one, but with Raney's matured writing the edited reissue is even more poignant and relevant.

Not often does an author have the chance to go back and rewrite her first book, but Deborah Raney had that opportunity. I read the original edition, saw the movie inspired by her book, and now I've read the new one. She has updated numerous things and added more depth, making an already good novel hauntingly beautiful.
John Brighton's wife has Alzheimer's, a cruel disease that afflicts entire families. I know. My mother died of Alzheimer's. I found Raney's book to be healing for me. With deep understanding and compassion, she exposes layer after layer of emotion a husband feels when his wife leaves him a bit at a time.
More cruel than sudden death or divorce, Alzheimer's robs the patient of their dignity as it robs the family of their loved one. After my mother died, daddy said he felt as if a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. That hurt and I couldn't understand how he could say it. Until I read A Vow to Cherish. As Raney reveals John's deep love for his wife, she also discloses how the disease wore him down. No one suffers Alzheimer's alone.
Beautifully written and filled with credible characters, Raney once again demonstrates why she's an award winning author. A Vow to Cherish stands on my all-time-favorites book shelf.

John and Ellen Brighton attend the high school graduation of their youngest child. The nest would soon be empty and they were looking forward to having time for each other. They plan to travel and just enjoy themselves. Then something started to go horribly wrong. Ellen began having periods of confusiion, saying things that didn't make sense. She gets lost and can't find her way home. A doctor gives them the shattering news. Ellen is in the early stages of Alzheimers. Nothing can be done to help her and the situation will gradually get worse.
In Chicago, Julia Sinclair has lost her husband and after years of sending her sons to St. Mark's private school, which she can no longer afford, she is desperate to get out of Chicago. Don't be fooled by the age or size of this book - it packs a huge punch! Cute beyond description; sexy and romantic; full of magic; very likeable and highly principled characters; set against the backdrop of fighting for a worthwhile and compassionate cause; and best of all, showcases that true happiness and meaning in life is uncovered by all the little loving things we do and not by how much money we earn or how prestigious our career is. Vicki Lewis Thompson has a wonderful style of writing that made this story a delightful treat to read.

Totally swept away in another world!.......2007-06-28
I absolutely adore the Dune series. The most recent books of which are coauthored by Kevin J Anderson, and Brian Herbert (Frank's son).
While waiting for the next Dune book to come out, i decided to try Saga of the Seven suns. I quickly devoured each available book in this series, and for the last two have eagerly anticipated their release. I can't wait for the next one!
The plot line is so intriguing, the characters so well developed. I love the way the story is told from each person's perspective. Sometimes it will even overlap events two characters shared in common and show it through each character's eyes.
I recommend you start from the beginning, but Dune and Saga of the Seven Suns are both written with little flashbacks here and there to anchor the current events and remind you of what happened before. (kinda like a 'previously on such and such tv show'). That might help you follow along if you jumped in the middle. But you'll probably enjoy it the most if you get to know the characters through their lives by starting at the beginning. (that way you don't have to play catchup)
To summarize the series, There are 4 races of Elemental beings that have been at war for thousands of years. Earth, Water, Fire, and Gas. There are also humans (still anchored at Earth), and a race called Ildrians which have like a telekenesis that links them all together. There are insectoid robots fashioned by a long suspected to be extinct race of insectoid organic creatures the Klikiss. There is also a vagabond group of ragtag humans who have learned to survive the most extreme conditions, known as the Roamers. And there are robots (compies) created by the human race to service their needs. The smaller less sophisticated races Humans, Roamers, and Ildrians are swept into this galactic battle that has been waged for centuries between the elemental races. And join forces with Verandi (earth), and Wental (water) to fight the Hydrogues (Gas).
This book has it all. Love, War, magnificent battles. Heartache. Happiness. Victory and Triumph. The battle of good versus evil. Internal conflicts of conscience. It is fantastic.
Like the Star Wars prequels without the kiddie elements and other flaws.......2007-04-18
Since filing an initial review or two back when this series commenced, I haven't checked in lately with my feelings on the later installments of Anderson's "Saga of Seven Suns" epic. Well, I've still been reading this series (or, more precisely, listening to it) for the past few years and I'm still quite enjoying it. The Saga is big, sweeping space opera at its finest, but without- thankfully- ever becoming too self-consciously "pulpy".
To be clear, we're not quite talking (at least, not yet) "Dune" level quality here, in terms of both complexity and depth, but we are talking good solid storytelling encompassing a variety of worlds and races, peppered with lots of smaller, human-scale storylines revolving around a variety of characters who make it easy to invest our interest and sympathies with them. Making things even more interesting is the happy fact that this latest installment, "Of Fire and Night", doesn't just take the various characters' established storylines further along in a "kind of/sort of" unpredictable fashion, but offers several surprising new directions for them that were completely unforeseen in previous volumes.
One caveat: I still wish the author would give us a little more detail about the workings of the Earth government. We gets lots of great stuff about the corrupt Chairman (and true ruler) of the Earth government going head to head with the figurehead "King" of the same government, but we're not told if there's also some kind of Congress or other lawmaking body somewhere in there, too. Wouldn't they have something to say about the Chairman and King's political battles? Such details would also explain who was running the obstensibly democratic government while the Chairman and King were busy trying to outguess each other's plans.
But enough nitpicking... this continues to be a fun and involving series, and the audiobook versions of the books continue to be produced in an artful and polished fashion, even with the new narrator who came onboard a title or two ago. Keep these books- and audios- coming!
The Final War with the Hydrogues.......2007-04-12
Of Fire and Night (2006) is the fifth SF novel in The Saga of the Seven Suns, following Scattered Suns. In the previous volume, DD used the Klikiss gate to find Margaret Colicos on an alien planet. Tasia Tamblyn was captured by Klikiss robots. Patrick Fitzpatrick III negotiated a deal with his grandmother for the freedom of all Roamers within the Osquivel system.
King Peter and Queen Estarra found the friendly dolphins slaughtered and realize that they can no longer hold back in their struggle with Hansa Chairman Basil Wenceslas. Mage-Imperator Jora'h converts the thism of most of the rebels back to himself, but Rusa'h escapes to a faeros city within the Hyrillka sun. Anton Colicos reads Homer's epics to Rememberer Vao'sh until he recovers from his thism withdrawal. The verdani battleships finally reach Theroc.
In this novel, the Osquivel survivors return to be welcomed by enthused crowds. The scientists push through the crowds, impatient to begin investigating the hydrogue derelict vessel. Dignitaries pose for the cameras in front of the small ship.
King Peter and Queen Estarra are there to greet the rescued EDF soldiers. Chairman Wenceslas is also there, although the survival of these men and women was a surprise and embarrassment to the EDF and himself. He wants the public ceremony over as soon as possible.
Admiral Lev Stromo commands the forces sent to rescue the "dunsel" commanders of the EDF rammer fleet, but they find no escape pods and no debris around Qronha 3. Headquarters sends further instructions and his communications techs pick up a faint hidden signal that shows them lost EDF crewmembers and Klikiss robots. Unfortunately, the soldier compies serving on the bridge also receive a signal to take over the ship.
Mage-Imperator receives a visit from hydrogue warglobes at the invitation of his daughter Osira'h. Still, the hydrogue emissary is not interested in negotiating with the Ildirans. First he threatens to destroy the entire race, but mental prodding by Osira'h causes him to provide the Mage-Imperator with a choice: exterminate the Terrans or die.
In this story, the Roamers are definitely not cooperating as ordered. The Terran Hanseatic League is also losing control of its colonies. Meanwhile, Chairman Wenceslas is losing control of his judgment and temper; he starts indulging himself with paranoiac fantasies and planning the death of Peter, Estarra and their unborn child.
Elsewhere, the various enemies of the hydrogues are gathering forces to terminate the ten thousand year old war. The Terran colonies and Roamers are allying with the faeros, the verdani and the wentals to take the war to the hydrogue planets. The Ildirans have an incidental role in this war, but the Hansa government is mostly unaware of the allied offensive.
This novel concludes one phase of this story, but the series does not end with this volume. Stay tuned for Book 6.
Recommended for Anderson fans and for anyone else who enjoys old fashioned space opera with a cast of billions. If you have not read any of the previous books in this series, start with Hidden Empire.

I have read all the Dune books and enjoy good sci-fi. Nevertheless I could not get started on this book for the highly detailed introduction with all the strange names. Perhaps if I had read the earlier books my review might have been kinder. I might do that yet.
exciting listen..........2006-11-10
I'm was very happy with this 5th book and I'm anxiously awaiting the 6th and 7th. The series changed narrators for the fourth book and I was expecting to be disappointed, but as it turns out, I was pleasantly surprised.

This is where it started............2001-04-08
...penned by the man who coined the term "Liberation Theology," which later inspired Ignacio Martin-Baro's "Liberation Psychology," for which he was martyred by a Salvadoran hit team.
My impression was that this was written mainly for clergy getting their activist feet wet. In that sense the book is an invaluable milestone. Because of this, it poses liberation (in the sense of liberation from oppressive social conditions like poverty and tyranny) as an intellectual issue, historically and theologically. Correction: it appeals to an intellectual understanding of what the author obviously has lived and felt very deeply.
Having just read LOVE IN A TIME OF HATE, I bought this book expecting to read flesh-and-blood examples of liberation theology as brought into the streets. You won't find much of that here. It's more of an account of how the movement has gone on in circles theological. As such, it poses vital questions to believers and clergy alike--questions of conscience, questions of the relevance of Scripture and the risks involved in living a Christian life of service and conscience in perilous situations.
The fundamental book on Liberation Theology.......1999-03-27
This is the first and probably the most crucial book on Liberation Theology to follow Vatican II and the Medellin conferences. It's not an easy book to read, but it will challenge you, as well as challenge what you think you know about liberation theology. For any student of modern theology this book is well worth the time and effort. Robert McAfee Brown's summary book is no substitute for the real thing.

This book is good for the cook who is experienced with his/her toaster oven broiler. It is a real and interesting cookbook. The recipes look good.
BUT it is not for the person who has bought his/her first toaster oven broiler and wants to know how to start using it. I need to know how long to broil a strip steak and have it rare inside and browned outside. I need to know if I can make 2 lbs of meat into a meatloaf and bake it in the toaster oven.
Eventually I will use this book, but it doesn't fill the needs I have now.

I was very disappointed in this book. The recipes were just ok. I would not cook any of this food on a regular basis. I enjoyed Pop It in the Toaster Oven book much better the recipes in that book were good and easy.

I am disappointed with this cookbook. I was looking for a basic cookbook to explain times and techniques to cook standard items in a Toaster Oven. What I call the "Nitty Gritty" of using a Toaster Oven. Obviously I am wrong, the book contains nothing basic, standard or instructional about using a toaster oven.

This slender paperback has a lot to offer in the food category, which is the main point. The recipes were more gourmet and ethnic than I expected, with a lot of new dishes. Even if you choose not to cook them in a tabletop/toastr oven, they're nice to have around for only 1-4 servings. As for the books toaster-friendly side, I'm not so sure. The authors give few special techniques or safety tips, a must for an appliance notorious for being a fire hazard. Also, most small toaster ovens are hell to clean, making it questionable whether you'd want to broil a lot of greasey things like hamburgers in them.
Fast and easy to prepare meals.......2001-07-05
I have tried four of the recipes from this book and have enjoyed them all. The ingredients are common or easy to find, and you don't need any special appliances besides a toaster oven. Great for one or two person meals. For groups of people, the appetiser section has good ideas, so you can cook the meal in your main oven and heat appetisers in the toaster oven. Most recipes can be put together and cooked in under an hour.

I bought this book several years ago and have enjoyed many of the fish and chicken recipes in it. With our hot weather in Texas, and only baking for two of us, I've found this works out beautifully and cuts down on the electric bill! I tried to find a copy to give to my mother and have not been able to find it -- so I'm ordering a copy for her!

This book is great for beginners who do not have the artistic eye. There are step by step directions and a lot of large colorful photos to make even the beginner paint like a pro. They also offer variations on each project so that you can customize your look. Each project also has a detailed list of the tools you will need so you will be completely ready before you start your project.
Good Step-by-Step for Beginners.......2005-11-30
This is another Taunton book that is part of the "do it Now, do it Fast, do it Right" series. This one addresses changing a room with paint.
What is so good about this book is that it includes detailed color photographs with it's step-by-step guide for each project. Each project includes info on tools, materials and tips on how to do it right. There is also a side bar called "What's Different" where they point out diferences in products you may use (for example, joint compound).
I picked up this book because it contained several projects I was especially interested in: painting trim, striping walls, painting floors and painting cabinets. Of course there are many more projects, including other paint techniques like strie walls, stencils, splatter, painting a cloud ceiling and "old world techniques.
This is a great book for those who want a detailed guide on how to paint and need step-by-step guides for specific projects.

If I had been able to peruse this book in a store I never would have bought it. While the pictures are very nice, I know I'll never actually do any of the things in it, so it was pretty much a total waste for me.

Genius Moves Beyond the Predictable.......2001-12-22
For almost a decade, New York Times art director Steven Heller has contributed a column to PRINT magazine called "Separated at Birth," inwhich he features twin-like pairs of otherwise unrelated designs. In 1993, he and Julie Lasky wrote an entire book on "appropriation" in design, titled Borrowed Design: Use and Abuse of Historical Form (Van Nostrand Reinhold). This book is in part an extension of that, in the sense that it unearths and juxtaposes examples of graphic design that seem to be indebted to earlier efforts in art and design. It is shown convincingly, for example, that the abstract crosses in the work of the Russian Constructivists were probably inspired by the clerical garb of Russian Orthodox priests in the 15th century; or that the famous pointing hand in James Montgomery Flagg's "I Want You For the U.S. Army" poster (1917) was anticipated by a ubiquitous advertising display for a drink called Moxie (1911) and a World War I recruiting poster (1914) in which Lord Kitchener (in a pose identical to that of Uncle Sam) "points a finger" at unenlisted British males. For good or bad, this book has very little text: Other than a brief paragraph that introduces each icon, its only commentary is a well-written opening essay. This book is a great reference for anyone interested in the recoding history of Charlie Christian. The book also touches on his background and roots in music, detailing his childhood experiences and following his path to success. Unfortunately, the book offers little about his personality or personal life outside his musical career.
Long on Detail, Short on Romance.......2000-03-28
The book is filled with lists of dates, recordings, details that overshadow the relatively brief narrative section. It reads like the good research that someone, a novelist or creative reader might use to write a really interesting biography of this fascinating character. Charlie Christian is THE seminal electric jazz guitarist. He grew up in the mid-west, journeyed to NY after being "discovered" as were so many other talents, by John Hammond. After a famous and dramatic audition for Benny Goodman he joined the quintet and changed jazz forever. Numerous sides from the Goodman bands illustrate his formative style in brief solos, but for the truly innovative pre be-bop, we go to the amateur recordings made after hours at Minton's -- where he held his own with Dizy and Monk at the birth of bop. His career ended shortly before his death at 23 -- yes he did all this in less than 2 years ! The story is incredibly romantic, the book is more research than romance.
