Book Description
Small masterpieces...[a] dazzling collection....Like Alice Munro, virtually her only equal in the field, Deborah Eisenberg here seems incapable of writing a bad short story...She focuses on misfits, people who don't feel at home in the world. So skilled is she at developing these characters as engagingly "ordinary" that we find ourselves identifying with them without realizing how we got there....Eisenberg's writing at times approaches the beauty of a line of poetry. She manipulates her readers with a master's blend of humor and poignancy. Her stories are wondrous....
-- David Wiegand, San Francisco Chronicle
Customer Reviews:
In Every Way Excellent.......2000-03-08
Eisenberg's prose is poignant and percise. She cuts through the circumstance and gets right to the heart of what it really feels like to be alive. The stories are vivid, easy to read, touching and above all real. In particular Mermaids, The Girl Who Left Her Sock on the Floor, and Rosie Gets a Soul hit a resonant chord within me. I finished the book the night I bought it, and had re-read half of it by morning. One of the most satisfying purchases I've made in years.
Not what I expected.......2000-03-05
After reading (and enjoying) a short story from this author in The New Yorker's recent anthology "Wonderful Town", I decided to try one of her own anthologies. I was sadly disappointed as the stories in her book were more complex, and the premises very different from the original one which brought me here.
Nowhere But Up.......1999-05-05
Just when I was sure Deborah Eisenberg's short stories couldn't get any better than the genius found in her earlier collections, I read this perfect book of short stories. Her use of dialogue is more innovative than any I've seen in contemporary writers and the depths of her intelligence and sentiment are staggering. I would reccomend this book to anyone and everyone. Some of the stories demand rereading and all are classics of contemporary literature.

Book Description
In the tradition of The Birth of Venus and The Other Boleyn Girl comes a dramatic and compelling story of a princess from Naples who marries into one of the most glittering and infamous families of the Italian Renaissance Sancha of Aragon, beautiful and vivacious, arrives in Rome after marrying an heir to the Borgia dynasty. But Rome, seething with conspiracy and intrigue, is a world away from the sunlit Naples of her childhood. When she discovers her new husband in the embrace of not one, but several women, she is heartbroken. Lonely, she befriends her glamorous and tantalizing sister-in-law, Lucrezia Borgia, whose reputation as a seductress is unparalleled; among her conquests, it is rumored, is her own brother, Cesare. Her jealousy is legendary and some say she has used poison to rid herself of rivals. Gradually, the two women develop a cautious friendship, and Sancha comes to admire Lucrezia's ability to navigate the dangerous political currents. But when Sancha is seduced by none other than Cesare himself, whose sexual magnetism and cruelty have made him notorious, she realizes she has placed herself in serious danger. If her secret is discovered, it could not only destroy her, but threaten her beloved Naples. Possessed of an indomitable spirit, she must summon courage and cunning to protect her country, her family and herself.

COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!.......2007-02-09
I LOVED this book. I read it in two sittings. If you like the works of Philippa Gregory, Karleen Koen, Sarah Dunant, Anya Seton, Susan Carroll, and Alison Weir you will enjoy this novel immensely.
Hazards of being Royal, Oh my!.......2006-12-28
A good read, it kept me interested but I did not care for this book as much as Jeanne Kalogridis', "I, Mona Lisa".
Dysfunctional is too kind a word for the Borgia family.
Come into the Borgia Parlor ..........2006-11-18
This is an interesting tale spun about who may have poisoned Pope Alexander VI and Cesare Borgia and why they were poisoned. I love the history and the intrigues of the period especially the intense and complex structure of the Borgia family. Cesare is darkly sensual, and deliciously evil as he manipulates his family and is consumed by his obsession with Sancha D'Aragon. Sancha is strong and determined, and the friendship she develops with Lucretia in their mutual love for Alfonso is definitely the highlight of this novel for me. Even Jofre Borgia is made interesting as we see his involvement in the Borgia's vendetta for control of 15th century Italy. Cantarella is still the poison of choice and readers should watch how this poison gets into the hands of Sancha. Historical readers will not care for the romance of the story, but the romance is crucial in driving the motive for revenge and justice in this novel as a turbulent love turns to consuming hatred because of an act of murder.
Dark & Sensual.......2006-07-19
I'll be frank here ~~ it wasn't what I expected at all but that didn't stop me from reading. I thought it'd be similar to "The Ruby Ring" but it's nothing like that novel. This one is darker and more sensual and more troubling. I couldn't put the book down though as I wanted to see how this book ends.
This is probably the first book I've ever read on The Borgias. Like one reviewer here mentioned, they sure bring new meaning to dysfunctional family! This novel focuses on Sancha of Aragon who marries the Pope's youngest and ineffectual son, Jofre Borgia. Once she arrives in Rome with Jofre, Sancha becomes ensared with Lucrezia and her brother, Cesare, who are also Pope Alexander's children ~~ and Sancha becomes deeply ensared in the sinister web of the Borgia family. Incest, murder, jealousy, adultery, lavish gluttony, and rumors swirl around Rome and Sancha had to rely on her own cunning to remain alive and beat the Borgias at their game.
This is a dark novel ~~ very sensual and troubling. Everything that man can possibly do to his loved ones ~~ are written here. It is a fast page-turner and while disturbing, it's also fascinating. I have not heard much about the Borgias and if this historical fiction is anything to go by ~~ they are intriguing and definitely interesting. That old saying that power corrupts definitely fit this family. It is an interesting historical fiction ~~ one that won't leave my mind for a long time.

Exciting.......2006-07-07
The history of the Borgia family is dark and intriguing, and this interpretation was true to tradition. It is an exciting read, but be warned, the sex scenes give it the feel of a romance novel at times.
Customer Reviews:
nice, fun collection of tales.......2006-03-07
A number of the stories in this collection were well written and all of them had interesting plots. My personal favorites were "Envoy" by Jeff Grubb, "The Land is in Our Blood" by Stan!, and "Essence of the Dragon" by Will McDermott.
These stories stood out because of the lessons they illustrated and their interesting characters.
One of the strengths of this anthology is it provided a somewhate different view of dragons than is typical of most fantasy and D&D-related novels.
The tales in this anthology were a fun mixture of action, adventure, and magic and many had interesting themes and lessons to think about.
If you are a fan of Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved RPG (or any other RPG for that matter) or are just looking for a fun set of tales you might want to pick up this collection.

The best way to show the Gospel of prosperity at work.......2007-08-10
I wanted to read this book but after 20 pages gave up, as I noticed it's message is about some quick fixes to get you happy, in a typical American way. To make it look Christian the author mentions the word God so we can be relaxed about it.
If somebody wants to be re begin to live a live with full potential that the right book is The 7 habits of the highes efficient people by Stephen Covey.
Throw out your copy of "The Secret." This is the book for you.......2007-05-25
For those of you who have been wondering about the obvious gaps in the new book, The Secret (example: all bad things you brought on yourself or wished for in some way), look no further. Osteen does a fantastic job of explaining that, sometimes, bad things happen for a reason. You don't imagine them, envision them or bring them about simply because you have been dwelling on them not happening, which is what "The Secret" suggests. Instead, they are all a part of God's big plan. Bad things take you to better places, provided you can roll with the punches and keep the faith.
So for those of you who have not been impressed with The Secret and have been wondering how religion and God/Jesus fit into it all, this book has the answer. What a relief!
Have a blessed day.

Overall a good book to read.......2006-05-11
I am thankful that I got this book. It was just what I needed to get my life out right, and focus back on God. This book, I highly recommend.
With all the sea of negative comments on this book, one thing I learned - I have an opportunity and the responsibility to speak God's blessings into my children's lives and declare God's blessings over them all the days of their lives.
Another book I came across that is useful to declare blessings over your children is "365 Prophetic Promises & Blessings for your Children". This book gives me the tools I need to speak blessings to my children and let my words of blessing sink down deeply into their hearts and minds and become a reality in their life. As Pastor Joel Osteen has said, "A blessings is not a blessing until it is spoken". I whole-heartedly believe that!
Loved it.......2006-04-12
The book focuses on the importance of positivity to stay happy. I have read the book twice and I can see how my inner self blossoms as I try and implement what has been mentioned in the book. It works like magic. Highly recommended.

Lots of Pictures!.......2006-03-04
This book has a lot of pictures of black glass collectables from common to unusual pieces. The descriptions are informative even though the prices seem to be on the low side. I enjoyed the Company Histories with Illustations (ads from catalogs, etc.) All in all a very good book for black glass collectors.
One of our Best Collectors Books.......2006-02-17
This is the first Black Glass reference books we have purchased, but in comparison with other collectors books I vote this the number one for pictures, prices, and descriptions.
A price guide and history for over eight hundred different animals, bowls, candlesticks, plates, stemware and more.......2006-01-10

Book Description
The dazzling artistry and consummate craftsmanship of the Celts has provided us with some of the finest treasures of the ancient world. In this glorious book, Celtic art and ornament--from intricate jewelry to illuminated manuscripts--fire the imagination of a superbly talented designer. Finding in needlepoint the perfect medium for exploring the elaborate detail and delicate fluidity of Celtic art, Alice Starmore has produced a magnificent collection of original designs. Stonework, interlacing key patterns, knotwork, spirals, and plant and animal forms all provide fertile ground for exquisite needlepoint creations worked in rich, glowing colors. Designs range from cushions and belts to a bookmark, rug, stool cover, and chair seat. There are detailed instructions and easy-to-follow charts, and a conversion chart offers a further selection of yarns. There is also a comprehensive lesson in all the basic needlepoint techniques. Featuring100 color photos, this is a book to inspire and delight all needleworkers. Alice Starmore is a prominent knitwear designer and author; among her books are The Celtic Collection and Fishermen's Sweaters.
Customer Reviews:
Lush, rich, luxurious.......2001-07-17
These are just some of the words that will come to mind when you see the patterns in this book. Alice Starmore is a genius at bringing simple patterns to life with vivid colorways. Many of the patterns can be used for other projects or crafts, for example, using variagated yarns and converting a cushion to a sweater. There are patterns for all skill levels, from a bookmark to a rug. The photography is wonderful as well, and all of the items are placed in beautiful still-lifes. Alice Staremore's Celtic Needlepoint makes as nice a coffee-table book as pattern book. Highly recommended for lovers of fiber arts as well as Celtic arts.
This book sent me to Ireland.......2000-08-23
This is the most thoughtfully laid out book of needlework I have ever seen--a friend and I wrestled for the only copy at a bookshop when it was between printings! Both the photos of Ireland and of the needlework "at home" are glorious. I've done a few of the designs and they've turned out wonderfully--my only caveat is that the graph colors can be difficult to distinguish, as is often the case with needlepoint charts, particularly British ones. Also, Appleton yarns can be hard to find in the U.S., but in these days of the internet, who cares? I'm confused by the other reviews as this is most definitely not a knitting book.
An excellent book on Celtic Needlework.......1997-08-15
Alice Starmore has written an excellent book on Celtic Needlework, that includes Key & Spiral Patterns, Knotwork, Bird & Tree and Animal Patterns. Each project is wonderfully illustrated with large colour charts and detailed technical advice. I enjoyed changing the colours and inventing my own special touch
Book Description
Here, taken from real sources, are dramatic wall hangings featuring jousting knights, minstrels, hunting scenes, monks, Celtic birds and knots, an Elizabethan panel, and Tudor gardens and florals. All have been simplified to fit the canvas in 16, 22, and 24 count. “Excellent.”—Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
Not worth buying.......2004-06-10
I was very disappointed with this book. I had expected some wonderful recreations of patterns and designs I had seen in tapestries and photos of Tudor castles and medieval settings but very little of that is to be had here. If you are interested in it, check out a copy of this at your local library before purchasing, if you're still interested go forth and buy, but at least you'll have heads up on the limited nature of this collection.

Solid help for those who need inspiration and guidance........2002-07-23
I always appreciate a book that clearly and simply tells you how to achieve what the picture shows. This books does that and does it well. I particularly liked the Denim Days and Outer Limits rooms-fabulously creative and fun!
A bedroom for my science kid.......2002-07-22
Wow! I loved the bedroom for a kid who likes science and technology - the metal wall and starry universe theme for the ceiling are a great touch! Lots of ideas for a great room!
Cover too traditional...the ideas are really up-to-date.......2002-07-19
I used ideas from 2 of the featured rooms. This book puts a fun twist on some standard construction materials. The cover is deceptively tradional...there were plenty of cool modern/industrial ideas. The instructions were awesome. Lots of great tips to prevent time-consuming and costly errors. There is a desk made out of tool chests that is perfect for a pre/teen boy's room. All the ideas are versatile and easily copied 'as is' or used as a springboard for your own version. I have seen many deco books and have never felt compelled to write a review until now.

Book Description
Abandoned by her father, struggling through a troubled youth as a biracial child in Cleveland, Ohio, and surviving an abusive relationship, Halle Berry faced extraordinary odds. But no one could have dreamed how far her determination would take her. From a breakout role in Spike Lee's Jungle Fever to her Emmy Award-winning performance in HBO's Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, Halle exhibited a tenacity that would eventually lead to Monster's Ball. The role not only proved to be a personal triumph for the actress originally deemed "too pretty" to play it, but would land the victorious Halle Berry an Oscar® -- making her the first African-American actress in history to receive the honor.
Introducing Halle Berry is the inspiring story of a woman who transformed a personal victory into a historic achievement that would speak to millions -- a Hollywood ending that serves as a sweet beginning to a remarkable new life and career. With new interviews with Halle's friends, directors and high-school class-mates, Introducing Halle Berry is the story of a movie star whose own life would make a thrilling movie.

SAME OLD SAME OLD.......2005-02-21
THIS IS ANOTHER EMPTY ATTEMPT AT A BIOGRAPHY. THE BOOK IS LOADED WITH MANY GENERAL FACTS BUT NOT MUCH DETAIL ABOUT HALLE. IT DOES CONTAIN SOME GOOD STORIES AND FACTS BUT OVERALL JUST READ A MAGAZINE OR A GOSSIP TABLIOD AND YOU WILL FIND THE SAME INFO. IT HAS SOME NICE PHOTOS OF HALLE THRU THE YEARS AND IS NOT A BAD READ BUT NOT A GOOD ONE EITHER.
A story well told, a book worth reading.......2003-03-11
Before reading Introducing Halle Berry all I really knew about her was that she won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002 and that she is one of the most beautiful actress in Hollywood right now. The book tells her story, from struggling with diabetes to begging Spike Lee for a part as a crackhead in one of his films. Christopher Farley touches upon very interesting topics, not only about Halle, but he also looks at the bigger picture. He touches on black actors in Hollywood, or lack thereof. I am a huge Spike Lee fan and there were very interesting tidbits about Spike which I never knew and I was mezmorized reading about. The book also gives a true account of Hollywood and how Halle Berry really paved her own way. Just because she is so stunning it seems as though she had it easy, but that is simply not true. She is a wonderful person and I really enjoyed reading about her life. The book is a fast read and I feel more knowledgable about Hollywood, Halle, and the history of Hollywood after reading this book. I recommend this book to everyone.

3 1/2 Stars, What a Woman!.......2006-10-20
Halle Maria Berry is one intriguing woman. Her story truly adds credence to the fact that looks aren't everything because her life has been quite a bumpy road, and she is often called the most beautiful woman in the world. Frank Sanello does a good job in telling us Berry's story; he includes very descriptive events and accounts of her life. One flaw of this book was the amount of times he mentioned Berry's beauty. Almost the entire world knows how good-looking Berry is, but he just brings it up one too many times. Put it this way; it's mentioned at least 20 times. Another flaw about the book is that a big Halle Berry fan would probably know most of the information in the book. For example, me. Although I was aware of many of the stories told, I also learned new things about her. Sanello got the vast majority of his infrormation from interviews and magazine articles.
Halle Berry was born in Cleveland, OH to Jerome and Judith Berry. Berry had also been close to her mother, but never truly had a strong union with her father because he began abusing her older sister Heidi and their mother early on. He never abused Halle, but because of his abuse to the other members of her family, she stayed away from him. In this publication, we learn that Halle Berry will do anything to get what she wants for her career. Most of the movies she has been in, she had to beg, and do some very unlikely things to get her roles. For example, for her first movie, "Jungle Fever", director Spike Lee dismissed the idea of Berry being the crackhead. At first Berry begged and begged but Lee remained adament about not giving her the role. But, Berry didn't bathe for 10 days, removed all make-up and visited crack houses to truly get the essence of the life of a crackhead! We also learned about the flack Berry faced for not only starring in "Monster's Ball", but winning the Oscar for it!
Berry's love life has been as difficult as her movie career. Her plethora of failed relatinships are talked about in great detail. One would think that a man would feel fortunate and privledged to have Miss Halle on their arm, and for a period of time they feel that way, but after awhile, the relationship spirals down. Perhaps the most mind-boggling aspect of this is her relationship with singer Eric Benet. There didn't seem to be a major problem in their relationship aside from the fact that he was "Mr. Halle Berry". But, after he married her, he became one of the biggest philanderers you'd ever want to see!
This is an overall interesting read and made me respect Halle Berry even more. This book would be great for someone who would like to know how she got to where she is, and the struggles she faced upon getting there. She has, in a sense, lived a "stormy life".

Book Description
"Red Hot Halle: The Story of an American Best Actress" is revealing! You'll meet Halle's "first love," the boy who caught her eye when she was just 11 and kept her interested for many years to come. It is intriguing! Find out how Halle lived the glamorous life as a teenager, dating a famous older man and traveling to London to compete for the Miss World title. This book is captivating! It shows a Halle Berry who, though wealthy, glamorous and famous, is very much like many other women who have been smacked around by adversity. Halle dealt with unkind lovers, and suffered rejection on a number of occasions. Importantly, Halle's story is inspiring because it tells of her will to learn from her mistakes and keep moving forward.
"Red Hot Halle" is chockfull of information about the history-making actress. It is the "complete" unauthorized biography about the movie star. Through exclusive interviews with Halle's first love, high school friends, boyfriends and colleagues to excerpted interviews throughout Halle's career, her full and controversial life is richly depicted. "Red Hot Halle" includes "the films of Halle Berry" and some two dozen photographs from her high school years to today.

This book is about my favorite actress, the incredibly talented Halle Berry. She is totally amazing because she doesn't let anything stop her from being number one. This book shows that Ms. Berry is a determined person. She always knew she was going to be successful and look what happened. She became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. I think the moral of this book is to believe in yourself.

Couldn't put it down.......2003-02-03
"Red Hot Halle: The Story of an American Best Actress" is fascinating. When the actress delivered her very emotional acceptance speech at the Academy Awards, I was curious about her. I wanted to know where she was from, how she got started and what other movies she had played in. I wanted to know all about her background and what makes her tick. "Red Hot Halle" tells it all. It is a very factual account of Halle Berry's life and it has information about every movie she's ever been in. But it is more than just facts. The book tells Halle Berry's life story in an intriguing way introducing other very colorful characters, some big Hollywood players and some everyday people. The book is fast paced, funny at times, inspiring but yet disturbing as it chronicles the actress's struggles in relationships. "Red Hot Halle" is an excellent read.

After reading the intros of "Red Hot Halle" and "Aaliyah" on Kelly Kenyatta's site, my appetite grew to learn more of the two stars. I was excited when my book order arrived. I tore into the package and started reading Halle until my eyes couldn't stay open any longer because I couldn't stop reading. I'm almost through reading it and I'm enjoying every bit of it. I felt like I was there.............. When I picked the book up the next day to finish reading it, I found out there were only two pages left, but I was yearning for more, more............. I like Kelly Kenyatta's style. Her explanations of the other people in her stories are informative. It brings people like me, who don't know them, up to date and put me/us in a familiar time and a place. I couldn't wait to start reading Aaliyah. I have become a fan of Author Kelly Kenyatta.

Customer Reviews:
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.......2004-11-20
This particular book was not worth the money spent. It's nothing but bits & pieces of already printed information, which
have appeared in other Halle Berry books. A true Halle Berry fan
will not learn anything new about this very talented actress.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. If you really want to purchase this
book, get it used
