Paige's all-stars featured Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell (the fastest man from first to third), Turkey Stearnes, and Buck Leonard. Imagine the best of the major league baseball players pitted against the best players in the Negro Baseball league in Fenway Park during the heart of the Depression. Kevin King's fictional account of a one night only, tightly kept secret game between the two teams is the premise of his debut novel, ALL THE STARS CAME OUT THAT NIGHT.
The St. Louis Cardinals have just won the World Series in '34 and are preparing for their off-season. Satchel Paige proposes the idea of the two teams playing. He coaches the players from the Negro league and Dizzy Dean coaches the major league players. During this time, Negro players are not allowed to play in the major leagues so this is an astonishing event. After receiving funding for the game and the blessing from the baseball Commissioner on the condition the game remains a secret, the result is the best game ever played.
Kevin King has offered an excellent piece of historical fiction in ALL THE STARS CAME OUT THAT NIGHT. King is a master of the English language so much so that I had to keep a dictionary handy. He also included several subplots that got away from the overall story. These lag times slowed my reading experience but the action of the game fully captured my attention. Filled with celebrities, influential figures from that era and an awesome line up of players, this was a nice trip back in time to ponder, what if...?

James Joyce Meets Babe Ruth.......2006-07-26
I wanted to like this book but couldn't. I enjoy historical novels that resurrect baseball's storied past, such as If I Never Get Back, but this offering defied convention and didn't resonate. It tries too hard to be "high literature" while at the same time wallowing unpleasantly in the muddy underworld of its cast of lowlifes. I can accept "offbeat," but I found the narrative voice awkward and convoluted. Maybe it's a literary "nasty slider" that I'm unable to hit. My bad?
A Must Read For Baseball Fans.......2006-02-25
However other readers will enjoy this Fantasy about a Dream Game between the best Negro League Players and a Team of Major League All-Stars. Satchel Paige and his friends against the Gashouse Gang and Frankie Frisch, with Di Mag still on the San Francisco Seals.A major bigot, Henry Ford sponsers the Game but wants to insure the White Team wins. Mix in Carole Lombard and George Raft along with a couple of off the wall criminals and this is great entertainment.
Interesting but flawed.......2005-12-14
If you love Baseball, and the larger than life personalities that
inhabited its early years, then you have to read this book.
When you do, try to focus on the marvelous interplay between
characters like Satchel Paige and Dizzy Dean, while ignoring
the unnecessary and distracting subplots that a better
editor would have excised. The author creates priceless
vignettes that, while fictional, paint what seems like
a wonderfully accurate picture of a special time and place.
With this book, those who wonder what Henry Ford thought of our
national pastime, or what color Carole Lombard died her pubic
hair, are in luck.

This is a historical novel about a fictional baseball game between Major League baseball stars and Negro League baseball stars. All of the major characters in the book were real people, not just the ballplayers. It's well written and entertaining, especially if you are a fan of old time baseball. The characters are probably more articulate than they were in real life, but that's not a bad thing.

I found this romance novel to be average to slightly above average among easy summer or vacation reads. I mostly read for stress reduction and my chosen genre is romance. I've read better, I've read worse--but if you are seeking a quick read with all the standard romance elements, including a couple of decent, not excellent, but decent love scenes, this book may be for you--especially if your taste runs toward the whole "royality and the virgin bride" thing. If so, this one is sure to please. I frankly found the emphasis on the whole virgin bride experience and pressure to produce an heir, while secretly downing birth control pills a bit predictable and overdone--but again, this is not my prefered romance setting. All in all, for 3 bucks and about 3-4 hrs of my life, I was satisfied with it.

A cop's reasoning as he gets drunk: it looks as if the time is marked out for each of us. This much and no more for some reason or no reason. I'm all for morality and going to church, he said.
Lt. Mendoza of the L.A. Homicide Squad drove a big black Ferrari and drank rye. Searching for a murderer (or two), bank robbers to boot, he finds himself in the oldest part of Los Angeles (technically, a slum) near the railroad yards, the Civic Center, the freeway exchanges and all the narrow old streets going in every direction. He is looking for a bum called Walter Williams. Is he a witness to one or more of the offenses or is he the perpetrator? His concern is only in finding revenge for the death of his colleague, Sgt. Dwyer. It had been a random death, which always stalked the streets of this city at random.
Sticks and stones; words can be dangerous things. The domestic interweaving with the police talk and lurid details about criminals' records, past and present. Some detail about cars and guns. Nothing first class about this murder mystery. Nothing good to say about the City of Angels.

If 1/3 of a page and one photo for each ship is enough info for you, this is an outstanding quick reference. I only wish the author had included a few significant ships of under 15,000 tons, and with the recent spate of very large new cruise ships, the book is slightly dated. A cross-reference list of sister ships might also have been welcome. No matter; this is still one of the most heavily-used books on my shelf.

I have several of Bill's books and enjoy his style of writing,
very Danny Proulx like in that everything is laid out in it's simplest terms. For each joint he goes over every power tool that can be used to make the joint, along with the pros and cons.
Overall a good reference to have.

This book is actually just a collection of articles bound together. While there is some good information here, I don't think it really had enough depth any of the subjects. Not a single mention in any article about how to 'put in all together' which was the thing I was looking for. If your wondering what to do, and in what order, you won't find the answers you need in this book. If your looking for some general tips on installing or building cabinets and tile in the kitchen area, this book is ok for that.

Miss the days when Suge's mere pressence would put the Ether on Busters. there are alot of Sponge Bob,Corny Pickle Leaf Turkeys out here who could use a good reminder of Suge Knight. Suge Knight ran a tight ship&had hits when Death Row was going strong. His acts didn't have to be on Rap City all Ashy&desperate to be remembered. Suge Knight kept it real when he was rolling. Suge Knight ran Product never had to be pushed on VH1 Soul, what Death row put out spoke for itself.Suge left Busters hanging over the Balcony, we sure could use that Suge vibe now again.

Hastily Compiled.......2005-07-19
Is more like a collection of articles on various topics on Suge ( i.e, his incarceration , relationship with 2pac , etc... ) hastily compiled into a book. rather than a 'flowing' autobiography. As well, it's pretty annoying when the author repeats a lot of stuff every few pages. Also , there is too little solid info of the guy ( e.g. too few interviews from people in Death Row or those connected with him. ) Hence, can't really get a solid picture of what the man is really like. Overall, is more like an academic ' analysis ' of Suge Knight based on few, random bits and pieces of information, rather than a solid ' story ' of the guy.
