Book Description

From gifted new writer Tasha Alexander comes a stunning novel of historical suspense set in Victorian England, meticulously researched and with a twisty plot that involves stolen antiquities, betrayal, and murder

And Only to Deceive

For Emily, accepting the proposal of Philip, the Viscount Ashton, was an easy way to escape her overbearing mother, who was set on a grand society match. So when Emily's dashing husband died on safari soon after their wedding, she felt little grief. After all, she barely knew him. Now, nearly two years later, she discovers that Philip was a far different man from the one she had married so cavalierly. His journals reveal him to have been a gentleman scholar and antiquities collector who, to her surprise, was deeply in love with his wife. Emily becomes fascinated with this new image of her dead husband and she immerses herself in all things ancient and begins to study Greek.

Emily's intellectual pursuits and her desire to learn more about Philip take her to the quiet corridors of the British Museum, one of her husband's favorite places. There, amid priceless ancient statues, she uncovers a dark, dangerous secret involving stolen artifacts from the Greco-Roman galleries. And to complicate matters, she's juggling two very prominent and wealthy suitors, one of whose intentions may go beyond the marrying kind. As she sets out to solve the crime, her search leads to more surprises about Philip and causes her to question the role in Victorian society to which she, as a woman, is relegated.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars good book, not Elizabeth Peters.......2007-10-10

A good quick and fun read. Like the references to Homer and discussions revolving around that. The back of the book states that "fans of Elizabeth Peters will welcome this debut novel". I am a huge Peters fan and prefer the quick wit and brilliance of Ameilia Peabody and her other female characters as opposed to the slow build-up of Emily's intelligence.

Overall, it's light and entertaining but will look forward to more Peters!

2 out of 5 stars About as interesting as a Barbara Cartland novel.......2007-10-07

I loved the concept of this book - a young widow, an international art theft ring, two possible romantic interests for the heroine - the right formula for the perfect novel. The problem is that in the hands of Ms. Alexander this formula becomes, well, formulaic.

There are bigger problems than the predictable storyline. Though the characters live in Victorian England, they speak, act, and think like 21st century Americans. One finds this to some degree in most historical novels, but this discrepancy occurs so often in this novel that it distracts from the storyline (which isn't that strong to begin with).

I came away with the impression that Ms. Alexander is, like myself, a fan of historic fiction and that she decided one day to write one of her own - without bothering to do any research about the time period in which she set her novel.

Clearly Ms. Alexander has many devoted fans, judging by the overwhelming 5-star reviews here. I can see how she has great potential to be a good writer - just not of historical fiction.

5 out of 5 stars You go, girl!.......2007-09-26

Emily Ashton is a brilliant woman trapped in a time when men control everything. She marries for security -- and to stop her mother from hounding her -- and then things really begin to get interesting. Her husband dies shortly after they are married and well before she gets to know him which leaves her with a fortune and the independence she could never have had as a single woman. In looking through her husband's things, she finds his journal which reveals how tenderly he loved her and was devoted to her. She also learns from some of his friends what an honorable and brilliant man he was. Emily now feels guilty that she never knew her husband better -- and that she never loved him. Finally, she truly morns his loss. Emily's intellect and determination are tested in the mystery surrounding her husband's death -- and don't worry, there's more romance in the future for this fascinating woman.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-08-13

I was so excited about reading this book because of the great reviews. I was so disappointed. The heroine was annoying and the "intrique" wasn't compelling at all.
If you're looking for a well-written historical romance, try anything by Madeline Hunter or Lisa Kleypas.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining Historical Romance with a Mystery.......2007-08-10

From the book cover: 'Emily agreed to wed Phillip the Viscount Ashton, primarily to escape her own overbearing mother. Phillip's death while on safari soon after their wedding left Emily feeling little grief, for she barely knew the dashing stranger.

But her discovery of his journals two years later reveals a different man than she imagined- a scholar and antiquities collector who apparently loved his new wife deeply. Emily's desire to learn more of her late husband leads her through the quite corners of the British Museum and into a dangerous mystery involving rare stolen artifacts.

To complicate matters, she's juggling two very prominent and wealthy suitors, one of whose intentions may go beyond matrimony into darker realms...'

The book cover states that this is 'a novel of suspense' but I wouldn't categorize it as such. I would categorize it as a mystery.

I enjoyed this story. I liked our heroine, the smart, young, headstrong, Emily Ashton. I enjoyed reading about the time period and I enjoyed the thread involving the Greek and Roman antiquities.

I thought it was an easy and enjoyable read and I'm going to start reading the sequel A Poisoned Season tonight.

I have just a few minor criticisms of this novel. I thought that a time line for Emily's narrative would have been helpful to give the reader a sense of how much time had passed since her husband's death and the events that unfold in her story.

I thought that Tasha Alexander painted a portrait of a bright and critical thinker in Emily yet when certain things happened she didn't seem to pay them the attention that someone with her intelligence would have.

And I would have given this novel four or five stars if there had been a greater emotional depth to the story.

Overall I enjoyed it and will read the sequel.

I would recommend City of Light by Lauren Belfer if you enjoyed the feminist theme at the turn of the century.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Liam Cameron's Story.......2007-08-14

      This was a wonderful book.

Liam (gorgeous, hunk and often pursued by women) is nearly killed and Keira Murray (another of Eric and Bethia's daughters from book 1) nurses him back to health.

She's hiding out in a cabin near a monestary at the time.

3 out of 5 stars Good story, too much brogue.......2006-10-04

I agree with another reviewer, the Scottish brogue made this book too hard to read. I don't want to have to try to decipher what the characters are saying. Too much work on my part. This was a negative for me.

The story was good enough but bogged down in the middle. The characters were the best part of the story. I Liked Liam and thought Keira was a good match for him.

This was my first book by Howell. Someone had left it at a bach condo where we were staying this summer. I pikced it up to read it since I had never read anything by her. I don't I'll read another.

3 out of 5 stars I really liked the story .......2006-02-10

This story pulled me in right away. But my only problem here is that Hannah Howell writes them talking in a very thick accent. The characters should have an accent. But, as this was written, it was very hard at times to even get an idea of what the characters were saying. I like to read characters with an accent but I think she has taken it to an extreme. I stopped reading after two chapters. I read romance novels for pure enjoyment. But, since this book was giving me a headache, it got bumped to the back of my stack of books that I want to read.
Maybe I will pick it up again someday and give it another shot.

      5 out of 5 stars I Always Love a Hannah Howell Book!.......2005-12-03

I pre-ordered this book back in September, and was so excited when it arrived. Liam Cameron has been one of my favorite characters in several of Ms. Howell's previous books, so I was thrilled to see him get his own book. And it was true to his character, right down to his cousin Sigimor's prophesy that he would "pay" for all his playing around with women when the time came for him to settle down in wedded bliss. Liam has finally found his "fit," the "right" woman for him, Keira Murray McKail. It took a near deadly beating to find her, but that is what it took, so that is okay. The only problems are one, she doesn't believe he will remain faithful to her due to his past history AND due to the fact that a married woman who claims he was a lover is chasing him all over the place. Two, Keira, already believes herself unattractive to men because her first husband had some severe problems (can't give too much away here!). Three, Keira has to save her deceased husband's people and lands from a man who has taken them and delights in causing pain and misery. Keira barely escaped with her life, after watching him slowly kill her husband. Liam wants to woo Keira, and win her love, but with all these problems he just doesn't have the time! The only thing that works for him is that after spending a month together in a cottage while Liam healed from his wounds, marriage to Keira is the only way to save her good name. He's thrilled, she's not, but he hasn't lost his skills, and the passion is high and hot between the two of them. This is a good story! It has more dialogue, and less sword fighting than some of her other stories, but for the most part, I found this perfectly acceptable, and in fact, just right for these two characters. At times it moved a bit slowly, but only because I was expecting a little more action. Once I got used to Keira's "thinking" and Liam's obvious responses, I liked it. It really makes for some wonderful, humorous scenes! I really enjoyed some of the side characters, especially Kester and Meggie, and hope they get their own book(s) some day! Thanks again, Ms. Howell, for another wonderful, well-thought out romance, not just another plug in new names, and change the dates. I look forward to June 2006, and "Highland Lover!"

4 out of 5 stars strong fifteenth century Scottish romance.......2005-11-30

In 1475 Scotland, Kiera Murray MacKail is forced to flee her home when Castle Ardgleann is overtaken by Ralf Mouwbray, who killed her spouse. She manages to reach a nearby monastery where her cousin Brother Matthew tends a wounded warrior Liam Cameron. As a gifted healer Kiera takes over caring for the patient.

When he recovers, Liam, in gratitude, agrees to escort Keira to his home where he is bound anyway. However, traveling without a chaperon for weeks, their families demand the couple wed. Liam accepts his fate having expected it, but Keira is reluctant as she knows he will discover her secret on their wedding night; she remains a virgin though a widow. As they mount a counter assault to regain Ardgeleann, they both quietly realize they love their spouse, but neither wants to be the first to say so out of fear of rejection.

Hannah "Highland" Howell provides a strong fifteenth century Scottish romance that her fans will enjoy while rooting for the lead couple to make it together and to defeat the enemy that has taken over her castle. Readers will wonder why she is a married virgin as Ms. Howell once again entertains her audience with a fine Highland historical tale.

As the author makes clear, becoming a Shaman is a rare, intensive, dedication to a way of life few modern Americans (or any other culture) would embrace. The Shamanic Journey for power animals and guides is quite another matter. My own experience closely corresponds to Cowan's. My teacher, co-Director of the Fire and Wind Institute ([...])was also a student of Michael Harner. The practice has opened new and wonderful vistas for me. Highly recommended.

And this book is already amazing. I love the way Mr. Cowan writes and how he explains things in a witty, informative manner. This is the only book I've read on Shamanism and I haven't actually journeyed yet, but I can already tell that this book will help me on my shamanic path for the rest of my life. The stories in this book are also really wonderful. All I can recommend for people exploring Shamanism for the first time is to read this book before any of the others out there. You won't be disappointed with this purchase.

This book has made me want to explore Mr. Cowan's other works.

Shamanism: A Spiritual Path for Daily Life is far and away the most comprehensive and far reaching book currently available for those who wish to walk a shamanic path. Tom Cowan does his best to cover all the bases and succeeds. For those who want to understand shamanism as a life strategy, this book is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's guide to modern shamanic practice.......2005-11-12

Right from the start we're advised to put aside any thoughts of lifting practices from specific cultures, and instead focus on a contemporary approach to spirit journeys that builds on universal techniques that have worked since the dawn of humanity, along with more contemporary concepts from "modern" religions like Buddhism and Christian mysticism. How much more reasonable could a spiritual practice be? Cowan knows his subject, is an excellent writer, is thoughtful in his approach, and is intellectual, spiritual, and practical in his approach modern shamanism. Sufficiently detailed to hold a discerning reader's interest but presented simply enough to put into practice immediately, this is an excellent beginner's guide to modern shamanic practice.

This book should be in every shaman's library. It gives a good overview of many viewpoints, remember to widen your scope is to enlarge your knowledge!.

                              Book Description

Now collected in one value-priced paperback—over 200 of Jane's inventive, delectable chicken and fish recipes for main courses, soups, and salads, all high-fiber, low-fat, low- or no-sugar, low sodium, and low cholesterol.

For the first time, here are Jane Kinderlehrer's collected recipes and tips involving fowl and fish preparations, a companion to her Smart Baking Cookbook, with her recipes on muffins, cookies, biscuits, and breads.

Regarding fish, Jane writes: "Fish is a valentine for your heart and your figure...it can pleasure your palate, your waistline and your well-being." Her 101 fish recipes, involving 26 varieties of fin-fish, cover all ways of preparation—baking, broiling, poaching, grilling, smoking, and sautéing—including appetizers, salads, chowders, gumbos, and main courses. Also covered are the facts you need about fish safety, selection, menu planning, and caloric and nutritional analysis.

Regarding fowl, Jane writes: "Though chicken is always a smart choice, not all chicken dinners are smart...a chicken dinner is smart when it is low in fat, sodium, and calories and served with high fiber accompaniments." Her 101 poultry dishes, plus stuffings & accompaniments, can be roasted, sautéed, poached, grilled, baked, and stir fried. Recommended by Julia Child, the tasty poultry offerings include dozens of chicken, capon, turkey breast, pot pie, and stew selections, plus a glossary on terminology and helpful hints on stuffing, carving, storing, and freezing.

As lighted porcelain village pieces become more detailed and sophisticated, collectors are desiring to place them in more realistic settings. The Original Village Display Tips books is a basic reference for building displays. Village Display Tips: Volume II is more advanced. Topics include laying out villages around focal points, transitioning one village into another, merging pieces from one village into another effectively, and developing seasonal displays for spring or Halloween. It also includes adding multiple trains and other animation, as well as using wheat lighting to create brighter or more atmospheric displays. There are also more ways to assimilate water - waterfalls and streams; construct mountains and to develop interesting backgrounds. Additionally, instructions are provided to build several projects to detail a display. Whether just starting out or well seasoned, this informative book is another basic resource for all village collectors.

                                3 out of 5 stars Just ok.......2007-01-09

The book has some ideas for pulling together a nice village. However, I think the average user is less interested in how to coordinate the colors of their village in an artsie-fartsie way and more interested in details on how to contruct a village background, how to hide cords, ideas for storage, et. The book does give a couple of examples, but more detail in this area would be more helpful. Overall though it is not a bad book and worth getting as a beginner if for no other reason than I didn't find anything else out there that was better.

Probably a good book for the right people. I thought it would help with scenery design for 1/144th scale dolls' houses and it was not valuable for that purpose. But interesting all the same.

This is a great book to give you some ideas in displaying your villages. It has nice clean pictures and some cool tricks to make water, scenes, ect. The only downfall for me was I wish it had a larger section on mixing trains with village pieces. It does contain a nice chapter on this, but it would be nice to see more info. If just village tips your after, then this is the book for you!

                                3 out of 5 stars Little dissapointed.......2005-09-10

The book was just ok. I thought it was way over priced, I expected to get lots of ideas for building a fabulous display along with directions. There were a few ideas and the discriptions could have been better. I will still use the book and ideas but had I looked at the book before buying it sight unseen, I probably wouldn't have bought it.

                                3 out of 5 stars A Simple Book.......2006-02-09

This book seemed pretty minimal, without much information after reading several other feng shui books. If you haven't read any other feng shui books, it would probably seem more interesting. This is a very light, very simple read, possibly a good gift.

Feng Shui has always confused me until reading this book. Office Feng Shui has simplified the mystery of it all, down to the simple basics to create a clear workspace. And it's easy and fun to read! The changes I made to my office after reading this book have been tremendously helpful, and I was able to implement them so quickly. In my busy schedule, I don't have time to study up on Feng Shui, so this book was perfect.

Aphoristic, not grounded in any theory, and unhelpful for my purposes. I was looking for something more than a statement or two about a topic per page. Written to showcase the illustrations, not the content.

Despite the growth of CD-ROMs, DVDs, and the Internet, printed design is bigger than ever. Only one design element separates digital designs from print: paper. In the world of print, paper choice influences every design project.

This collection of paper graphics presents the most striking and effective work from top designers around the world. With designs chosen to provide readers with inspiration, know-how, and fresh ideas, this book boldly illustrates how paper can act as the driving force behind a design. Attention is also given to how paper choice is incorporated into a design?as a means of expressing concept, for its aesthetic qualities, and for its structural properties.

Bold, close-up photography spotlights each project, and insightful copy tells how the paper was chosen and why it makes the piece so special.

The presentation of a lifetime achievement award to Elia Kazan at the 1999 Oscar ceremony was one of the most controversial events in American movie history. Kazan's theatrical résumé includes the original productions of The Skin of Our Teeth, Death of a Salesman, and four of Tennessee Williams's best dramas. For the screen, he created Pinky, A Streetcar Named Desire, East of Eden, Baby Doll, A Face in the Crowd, On the Waterfront, Wild River, and America, America. But during the red scare, the master director named names before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, ruining the careers of several of his contemporaries.

How could the man behind such thoughtful and sensitive masterpieces betray his friends? What is the relationship between an artist's personal life and his public vision? While Kazan spoke to these questions in his stunning, epic autobiography, Elia Kazan: A Life, this interview-based book offers new insight by focusing the conversation on the director's professional life. As Kazan responds to Jeff Young's probing queries, we vividly experience his uncompromising independence, determination, and strength of will.

Regarding the success of his most legendary film, Kazan says:

When I started On the Waterfront, I was what they call unbankable. Nobody would put up money for me because I had had a series of box office failures.... I had a hell of a time raising money, but I respond very well to difficulty. If somebody makes trouble for me, I come flailing out in every direction. One of my happiest moments was when I got the Academy Award for On the Waterfront.... It was especially rewarding because we had made something out of nothing.... All of a sudden no one cared what my politics were, that I was controversial, or difficult or that people were slamming me all the time. After On the Waterfront, I could do anything I wanted. That's Hollywood.

This volume provides readers with an exquisite opportunity to examine the mind and work of a major artist--including details about Kazan's collaborations with Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, John Steinbeck, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Gregory Peck, Katharine Hepburn, and many others--as well as the chance to experience the creation of some of the century's most indelible works of art. --Raphael Shargel

4 out of 5 stars Good insight into Kazan's films........2002-08-17

Elia Kazan was one of the most important film directors of the late forties to early fifties. Besides blazing a trail as one of Broadway's top theatre directors, Kazan also established himself as a top Hollywood director. His films helped blaze new ground covering social themes like anti-semitism (Gentleman's Agreement), racism (Pinky), corrupt unions (On the Waterfront), and the abuse of television (A Face in the Crowd). Films like "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Baby Doll" challenged the censorship of the day with their depiction of raw sexuality.

Kazan also pioneered the use of cinematic realism with his location shooting and the realistic performances of his cast through the use of "method" acting. Kazan would be responsible for launching the careers of Marlon Brando and James Dean.

However all these achievements have been overshadowed by Kazan's appearance before the House Un-American Activitees Committee in 1952. Unlike many other moviemakers and actors, Kazan cooperated with HUAC and named names. One of the most high profile entertainment figures to turn informer, Kazan helped to consolidate the Hollywood blacklist of the 1950s. This has made Kazan arguably one of the most hated and controversial figures of the McCarthy era. As a result many people are uncertain of where to stand on Kazan.

In this book, reporter Jeff Young interviews Kazan extensively about each of his films. It's very interesting to hear a little about what it was like working with his actors and how he would coax great performances from them. Kazan was a very good actor's director in large part, I think, because he was good at empathizing with them and making them feel comfortable. Instead of telling them what to do as most directors would, he told them what to think and what to feel. It was touching hearing how when the neurotic James Dean came onto the "East of Eden" set, Kazan moved in to a trailer across from him to keep an eye on him.

It was also quite interesting hearing how Kazan got some of the ideas for his films. For instance, I didn't realize until I read it that much of the ideas for "On the Waterfront" were based on real cases and that the Terry Malloy character was based on a real person who worked on the docks. Nor did I realize that "East of Eden" was a semi-autobiographical film. "Wild River" (alas, to date never released on video), stemmed from some of Kazan's documentary work during the Depression, and "America, America" stemmed from the experiences of Kazan's Greek uncle's journey to the America.

People looking for insight into Kazan's decision to name names may be disapointed. This is not really an in depth discussion of those events, but a loving look at Kazan's films. However, in case you think that Jeff Young has fallen too in love with Kazan, there is a probing question that Young asks Kazan near the end of the book. Kazan has always claimed that he named names because he thought that Communism was a threat to America, not because he was interested in personal gain. However, Kazan doesn't seem to have been prepared for the specific question that Young has to ask him. Kazan's emotional response is quite revealing and manages to take some of the gloss off the way he portrays himself.

For anyone interested in Kazan, this is a good place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Kazan's sharp and sometimes irreverent take on his career.......2000-10-06

If you've read this far you may already know about Kazan's career as a filmmaker and Broadway director. But he is probably best known for his actions before the House Un-American Activities committee in the 1950s. Kazan named names. This had made him an enigma to the dominant Hollywood culture. Today, he is recognized as an important filmmaker in the history of movies, but his political views have made his life somewhat bumpy in his chosen profession.

Kazan proves to be erudite and witty and humorous and surprising. He openly hates some of his own movies, though reviewers consider them classics. He does love his version of a STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, which he also directed on Broadway. He speaks with some regret that he didn't also direct the movie version of DEATH OF A SALESMAN (another Broadway play he debuted).

That is just a small bit, but I would recommend the book to anyone interested in the politics of communism in the 1950s and its aftermath, or any film fan that likes to dissect film directors and their work. I am interested in both subjects and found Kazan illuminating on both.

3 out of 5 stars How he did it.......2000-07-04

(and did not). This is unfortunately not a good book about Kazan's career as a filmmaker, not even about his films. It contains no real biographical material on his life (10 paltry pages: "he is born where, his father was, studied here", do not justice to the life of a first class director). The reason is that Kazan was writing his own biography (some 800 pages) and Jeff Young was not supposed to infringe on the master's territory. But the films suffer as well. We have no idea, while reading this book, on what was "East of Eden" at the time it came out, we only hear Kazan's voice and Young's persistent questions, most of them too technical to interest even a concerned reader. No general view on the subject, no cutaways (interviews or whatever) on people who have worked with Kazan, not a word from Brando, nor any writer or producer connected with his work, nor even the critics of that time. There are only the obsessive questions Young asks Kazan, going through every single scene of some of his films ("On the Waterfront" has some 80 pages of "why did you do this" and "how did you do that") because the interviewer (a would be director) hoped he could learn his craft from the Master. He was met with the sternest objections (Kazan repeatedly proclaimed "there are no rules") to no avail. The only way to publish a book like that would have been to accompany the printed edition with a CD containing the scenes to which the text refers. As such indeed it would have been "an invaluable addition to film scholarship" as Martin Scorsese is supposed to have said. Without a full library of Kazan's films, this book remains incomplete, but (for scholars) it is still a dignified contribution to the knowledge and remembrance of Elia Kazan's work. PS: By the way: Why does no studio release "Baby Doll" in video? This is one of his best films, and apparently the one Kazan preferred.
