Book Description
With the publication of Kafka's Curse, Achmat Dangor established himself as an utterly singular voice in South African fiction. His new novel, a finalist for the Man Booker Prize and the IMPAC-Dublin Literary Award, is a clear-eyed, witty, yet deeply serious look at South Africa's political history and its damaging legacy in the lives of those who live there.
The last time Silas Ali encountered Lieutenant Du Boise, Silas was locked in the back of a police van and the lieutenant was conducting a vicious assault on Silas's wife, Lydia, in revenge for her husband's participation in Nelson Mandela's African National Congress. When Silas sees Du Boise by chance twenty years later, as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is about to deliver its report, crimes from the past erupt into the present, splintering the Alis' fragile peace. Meanwhile Silas and Lydia's son, Mikey, a thoroughly contemporary young hip-hop lothario, contends in unforeseen ways with his parents' pasts.
A harrowing story of a brittle family on the crossroads of history and a fearless skewering of the pieties of revolutionary movements, Bitter Fruit is a cautionary tale of how we do, or do not, address the past's deepest wounds.

Fairly torturous read.......2007-10-09
The book has an interesting premise: what happens when a man who was witness to his wife's rape runs into the rapist in a grocery store? How does this chance encounter affect the amnesia of convenience that has been created in the intervening 20 years?
What we get instead is a smorgasbord, as there isn't much that doesn't find its way into "Bitter Fruit": rape, recovery from rape, memory, differing perceptions of the same even, incest (three different ways), police brutality, gun violence, marital tensions, biracial people, racial tensions, angst about identity, nature vs. nurture, religious confusion, unwanted children, and, to top it all off, mysterious Muslim men with an unclear agenda, until reading starts to become painful. The book is more indigestible than bitter. It's simply too much.
Bitter over 'Bitter Fruit'.......2007-03-10
I usually read novels, thick and thin, within a week; but this book took months. I couldn't stand to read more than a few pages at a time because it was just that terribly written. It was probably one of the worst books I've ever read. I'd much rather read a boring textbook on math theory than read this again. I don't understand how it won the awards it did because I don't think it deserved it. The progression was dreadfully slow, and many times the author was redundant and appears to be just filling space. Also, I don't think it dealt much with apartheid at all, but more so about a dysfunctional family in general. And Michael's rage and his driving force (in the end) was really appalling and so fitting with the sensationalism in society and the media today. This book was rubbish and I wish there was a 0 star rating because it definitely isn't even worth one. Don't waste your time.
Like Molasses.......2007-02-11
This story takes place in South Africa. It starts off with the promise of a great read as Silas encounters Francoise Du Boise, who had raped his wife Lydia decades earlier. This wound is freshly reopened not only for Silas but for Lydia when he tells her about it.
Then the book becomes boring and as slow as molasses with very little action, which when it fleetingly appears is interspersed with a whole lot of thinking. Example: On page 95 "he urinated" but since page 92 we'd been hearing of the hospitalized Silas's "unbearable need to urinate."
On page 30 the action here is Mikey peeing and watching "the steamed froth with some satisfaction, shivers with delight at the end. How pleasing the simplest acts of gratification." I think the author loves to pad.
The story improves slightly (pg.36) when Mikey remembers how he and Mireille as youngsters "played Ghandi." However when Mikey falls asleep while he is looking at Lydia's diary hidden in her bureau, for which he went out of his way to search for the key, there was something definitely askew here, I thought.
On page 78 Kate stumbles on Mikey's ritual but the story gets diluted with that time when she sees a leopard up close. Aouch!!
And that "stuff" between Silas and Betty was..... (pg. 98). I persevered to page 100 (1/3 of the book). Couldn't take more.
The author's positives were in some of his descriptions, which were sometimes interesting and humorous.
Thought Provoking.......2006-06-25
This is one of the best books I have read in my life! I never heard of this author, I just happened to pick up the book while I was in an airport. I was so engaged with this book I could barely put it down! As an African American who has never been to South Africa I felt this book was absolutely extraordinary and I loved the intertwining of so many characters while not losing the identity of any of them. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in books that are for pleasure but also cause you to reflect.
A Novel by an Activist........2006-05-27
In spite of trying, I could not complete the 'Bitter Fruit'!
This is a story of a black middle-class family in post-apartheid South Africa. After years of struggle and deprivation they now enjoy material comforts, but events from the brutal past give them no peace of mind. The story of Silas family’s struggles to come to terms with the past, even as prosperity and equality beckons, is used as a metaphor for the dilemma in present-day South Africa. While the Truth and Reconciliation Committee works to heal the society from the indignities of the apartheid-era, individuals must still confront their demons from the past in private.
In this story, Silas and his wife see their lives turned upside-down when he runs into a white policeman who raped her a long time ago. It is fertile territory for Mr. Dargor with his social activist background, but the result falls short.

Product Description
Achmat Dangor, South African writer and political activist, has written an emotionally truthful book about the direction South Africa takes in the post-Mandela era. The novel centers on a young woman, Lydia, and her small family. Lydia had been brutally raped by an Afrikaans policeman during the Apartheid years. Now, nearly 20 years later, the past comes back to confront Lydia, her husband Silas, and their son, Mikey. This powerful novel looks at relationships, both personal and political, and at the fruit these relationships bear. "Bookclub-in-a-Box" looks at the detailed way in which Dangor tells his haunting story and considers the various images and symbols Dangor uses to highlight and illustrate his themes. In addition, every "Bookclub-in-a-Box" discussion guide includes complete coverage of the themes and symbols, writing style and interesting background information on the novel, the author and the unusual historic time that frames the story.

A determined young lady vows to give one of London's infamous rakes his comeuppance -- but when the rogue turns the tables, who truly learns a lesson in love?
Beloved Sinner
The ton gossips call him "Saint" -- but the Marquis of St. Aubyn has well earned his reputation as London's perfect scoundrel. Evelyn Ruddick knows she should avoid him at all costs -- but the strikingly beautiful lady wants to aid the children of the Heart of Hope Orphanage, and he heads the board of trustees. Evie is determined to teach the charming, arrogant man a lesson in compassion, but it won't be so easy -- especially since his touch is setting her desire aflame, making Evie yearn to submit to his passionate instruction ... The idea of joining in her "project" is unthinkable, but this enchantress refuses to give up! So what else is there for a self-respecting rake to do but seduce the lady? Yet soon it is he who is being seduced by Evie's tender heart and fiery blushes. Could the temptation of long, passionate nights in her arms bring about the impossible? Could the disreputable Saint at long last be reformed?
Customer Reviews:
She DID NOT deserve the hero!.......2007-06-16
I stuck with this book hoping the "heroine" would grow a spine by the end of the book but was disgusted to find her lily-livered to the very end. It was bad enough that Evelyn wouldn't stand up to her hideous brother about the work she valued with her orphans but she wouldn't even stand up to him over the man she loved. She was actually going to marry someone she despised (after her heartless brother sold her to him) even after St. Aubyn offered to take her away. No, poor Saint first had to get her worthless brother a job before she would marry him. Any worthy heroine would have told her family to go hang after the way they treated Evelyn and walked right out the front door.
St. Aubyn was the only reason I finished the book and then I was sorry I did because he was then stuck with that awful spineless woman. The delicious Scoundrel deserved much better than her.
This book is brilliant - five stars+ !.......2007-02-24
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys deliciously witty historical romances with depths to the characters. Every word is a gem, every scene is gripping.
The hero, Saint, is simply adorable. He is cynical, sharp, charming, and inwardly a hopeless romantic--which makes him, in this simple reader's opinion, the epitome of a romance hero.
Suzanne Enoch is a master storyteller, in a totally different league than her contemporaries. Her sex scenes aren't very graphic, but they are hot and the author gets the point across.
This book is a solid keeper, and one that I can see myself re-reading again and again. I wish other authors could write regencies the way this talented author does. So many do it, but so few succeed.
He is the perfect scoundrel!.......2006-10-26
I looooooooooved this book. It was my very first Suzanne Enoch book and will certainly not be the last one. I very much enjoyed it. I won't go into a scenario because so many other reviewers have. St. Aubyn is definitely a perfect scoundrel for sure and you can't help but just get sucked in by his charm, humor, and devlish ways. He thoroughly redeemed himself as the book progressed and that closing speech he gave to the heroine will make you want to just flip the pages back and start all over again and/or lose your own heart for sure. This scoundrel really came alive for me as well as all the characters leaping off the pages. I just loved it. Its a keeper.
Can't beat a good Suzanne Enoch novel -- Love SAINT .......2006-09-16
London's Perfect Scoundrel by Suzanne Enoch was a perfect bad boy falls in love story. Three women decide to make a list of lessons that all men should learn to be good husbands. This is the story of Eveyln who wants to show the world that she has brain but has to work with the worst rake 'Saint' the Marquis of St. Aubyn. I loved this novel the characters are great.

Perfect.......2006-07-12
Need I say more. This is a gem for me. It was a light read with no villian just a simple story about a man (Sin) who is just downright sinfull and sweet Evie who wants to reform our hero and boy does she ever. I loved the scene in the basement of the orphange. Wow Wow Wow. I felt the characters emotion while reading this book. There seem to be so many authors who fail to do that , they seem to spend more time on what the room looks like and the historical drama - Blah, Blah. Don't get me wrong I do enjoy that part of historical novels just not for 3 or 4 pages. This was a great book for me.

practical advice.......2006-07-28
The spotlight reviewer above may have found the advice unhelpful for their specific situation. They certainly read more into the gender specificity than the author intended. I found this book very helpful and readable in the two months after I discovered my wife's affair. The author's language is directed to a female audience (for consistency as a literary choice), but asserts (and I agree) that most of the advice is applicable to spouses of either gender. Harvey goes a long way to breaking paralysis and offering something to the agonizing "what do I do?".
I would strongly suggest "Surviving an Affair" by Harley (note slight spelling difference - not the same author.
Wonderful, practical advice.......2006-04-01
A few months ago my wife told me about her affair and desire to leave. Since that time, I've read a number of books telling me how to save my marriage and survive infidelity, even if my wife didn't want to stay married. I tried all sorts of things to keep our marriage together, some of them "guaranteed" to work.
But as this book says, the truth is that when the one you love wants to leave, all you can do is let them go. It's the hardest thing in the world to do, but the author does a great job of helping you understand why it's so important, both for your own sanity and as the only course that will give your marriage any chance of surviving.
As a man whose wife is leaving, the convention in the book of placing everything in the context of a husband leaving his wife was a minor issue. The author explains this convention in the preface, and I can't think of a better way he could have written it, but that is my only complaint. I really appreciated his references to the Biblical basis for this course of action, his very practical and realistic advice, his constant reminder that the marriage might end after all is said and done, and his keen insight into the details of the situation I'm in. The author isn't promising to work miracles, he's just telling you the way things are, and that's nice to hear.
A few of the points in the book were especially helpful to hear. It was comforting to read that folks who are "pulled out" often talk like those who have been "pushed out", blaming a majority of the problems on the faithful spouse when the reality is that they are yearning for that "something sweeter" outside the marriage. It was also good to hear that they can act so calm, cold, and rational because they are acting almost completely on emotion. They may sound logical, but they aren't acting rationally.
My counselor recommended this book, and I'm very glad he did. Its advice may not save my marriage, but it has helped me realize that I'm doing and have done all that I can, and now it's time to start letting go.
You must have this book.......2005-07-12
I read this book within a week after my wife left me, and it helped me tremendously. Donald Harvey maybe oversimplifies things, but when you are going through the crisis, you want to know why this is happening and what to do. Not all of the "why" questions will ever be answered, but this book helped me make some sense of what was going on, why a spouse leaves and what to do and how to do it. Most of the time if someone leaves a marriage it is the husband and just to make it easier to read he refers to the spouse that has left as "he" or the "husband".
I am afraid that I must disagree with the Rev. Dr. Daniel J.G.G. Block's review of the book. I'm a pastor and I reccomend it to every pastor I know to have for a reference and to give to someone who is facing this crisis. You will never know what it is like unless you've been through it. I've been through it and this book helped me very much.
When the One You Love Wants to Leave.......2005-04-14
I received the previous edition of this book when my husband left 13 years ago. It was actually sent to me by my mother-in-law. It was a godsend. It gave me a framework to use to deal with my grief and gave me strength to overcome my emotional impulses and think rationally. I have recommended it over and over again throughout the years to friends and family finding themselves in this situation. I can't recommended it highly enough.
Intellectual Excrement.......2003-06-22
Dr. Harvey lives in a world that ceased to exist for most people more than an half a century ago. Reputable sociologists tell us that as men marched off to World War II, women were forced to fill the vacancies in the factories and other segments of the work force. As an unintended consequence, women found their own voices and the Women's Liberation Movements took on an impetus which earlier generations could only dream of. Despite retrenching and conservative dynamics during the 1950s, the rights, strengths, powers, and abilities of women have grown more-or-less steadily ever since. In Western culture, women have found their own voices, and they are no longer extensions of their fathers or husbands.
...unless you are Donald Harvey.
In Dr. Harvey's world, men are powerful actors, who initiate marital dissolutions (i.e.: pages 17, 19, 21, 25, 45, 133, and 187), and women are nothing more than helpless victims, who patiently endure their husbands' abuses (i.e.: pages 17, 55, 172 and 187). Moreover, some of Dr. Harvey's conclusions are intellectually questionable, such as when he labels alcoholism or drug abuse as a choice (i.e.: page 36), despite the inclusion of chemical dependency in the DSM IV, as a disease. Dr. Harvey paints with too wide a brush, indicating that an estranged father's love for his children is a form of manipulation (i.e.: page 141), and warning abandoned wives that their in-laws will always take the side of their missing partner (i.e.: pages 157-158).
Dr. Harvey's book appeals to a certain world-view that has not existed in reality since the 1930s, if it ever existed at all.
This book also follows the formula of man bashing, currently popular in pop-psychology, which may sell books and help to enrich Dr. Harvey, but which fails to meaningfully facilitate the dialogue between the genders.
This book is worse than useless. It is destructive. If you don't own it, don't purchase a copy. If you do own it, it might make good kindling for your fireplace.

Guidance and comfort for surviving marital crisis
Book Description
Nowhere has there ever been a city more famous for its bazaars than Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey. Standing at the gateway from Europe to the East, the once-fabled Byzantine capital became the center of the vast Ottoman Empire, which at the height of its glory spread East-West from Baghdad to Tripoli and North-South from Budapest to Cairo. Every Ottoman city was a shopping center, and as early as the sixteenth century Western travelers wrote of the glories of the bazaars across the Eastern Mediterranean and from beyond.
The Ottoman Kitchen explores the culinary traditions of the region, and offers a collection of practical recipes for up-to-date versions of classic dishes. Interwoven with illuminating tales of history and culture, over 100 photographs are featured-stunning recipe pictures and evocative location shots of modern-day life. Much-traveled recipes include the luscious pastry baklava from Armenia; the egg and lemon sauce known to the Greeks as avgolémono, with its Byzantine origin; and the boregs or pastries for which the Turks have long been famous, modeled on the dumplings of Mongolia and China from where the Turkic tribes came west. Then there are the dishes, such as Circassian chicken and Albanian liver, whose very names denote their origins.
This is food that was brought together in the bazaar and perfected and refined in the palace kitchens of the Ottoman sultans. One of the earliest exponents of fusion cooking, the Ottomans elaborated and refined the culinary traditions of the entire Eastern Mediterranean region to create one of the world's greatest, and most eclectic, cuisines.

The Thrift Highway.......2004-10-26
This is fun and fantastic resource. These girls love a good bargin, and they obviously have a knack for fact-checking. "Dirt Cheap Real Good" is full of helpful information -- and with a bevy of detailed directions to accompany the funny and personal anecdotes, it's the only road atlas you'll ever need.
These Ladies Know Thrifting! .......2004-08-21
I read this book assuming that, after 9 years living in the DC area, I would find summaries of my favorite haunts, and maybe scoff at outdated listings for a few that had closed. I did not expect, and was very happily surprised, to find mention of several newer shops, including a few nearby I didn't even know existed!
The book was obviously very thoroughly researched, and I'm sure they had a blast writing it. (Now, if only I had thought of it!)
Not just thrift stores!.......2004-08-05
You may purchase this guide looking for some stores to stop into, but what you'll find instead is the makings of a thrift vacation. The authors outline great roadtrips to surround the highlighted thrift stores, so you'll know where to stay and eat as you thrift your way around the mid-atlantic region. They even throw in some other activities besides thrifting in case you go into bargain-hunting overload. It's a pretty genius idea and a totally original take on road-tripping. I highly recommend picking this book up for a new perspective. Plus, they do give you all those great stores to stop into.
Dirt Cheap, Real Good is REAL GOOD.......2004-08-05
I bought DIRT CHEAP, REAL GOOD for a weekend trip to D.C. and I was blown away by the thorough research the authors had done on thrift shops in the area. They not only tell you where to go, but also include information about what to expect in terms of price, selection, and even atmosphere. The writing is lively and fun, and the book is illustrated with photos of many of the stores. This book is a gem for true connoisseurs of thrift stores and American popular culture.
A MUST FOR YOUR CAR and ROAD TRIP!.......2004-07-21
Dirt Cheap Real Good Rocks. I was visiting some friends in Philly and my friend was wearing a cool old IZOD(I had been dying to find some IZODs and Le Tigre vintage shirts). When I asked him where he got the shirt-he pulled out Dirt Cheap... and we spent THREE full days on tours of the Philly area thrift shops! I cleaned up!(now you can find some of those shirts on my ebay site) There were also cool insights to local eateries!! Now I have one in my car and have circled the next several trips.. They need to write one for every part of the U.S.!!

Great Inspiration.......2007-03-02
I am a novice knitter and I love this book! As a beginner, I wouldn't have thought of some of the yarn combintations suggested in the patterns, but they are wonderful. True, the patterns are very basic (great for this beginner), it's the yarn selections that make these styles so interesting.
Novice Knitter.......2007-01-23
I'm so new to knitting but want to be able to craft nice things. Hammett's book is a big help in making novice patterns look beautiful using a variety of specialty and standard yarns. I look forward to doing more of the patterns that she shares in her book and hope to improve my craft.
Scarves and Shawls for Yarn Lovers.......2007-01-10
Very simple patterns with novelty yarns. Not worth the price as any knitter can do this. Good for beginners, but not useful for more experienced knitters.
truly amazing scarves.......2007-01-09

I've made several scarves and a shawl for gifts each turn out wonderfully and were enthusiastically received. You'll never be stuck again of what do with the many differnt yarns now available.

Customer Reviews:
Great for Architects.......2002-08-22
As the reviewer said, this is an architect's dream book, since most of the offices belong to architects. The photos are quite lovely, but this is not quite the right book for some help on what to do with your existing space without hiring an architect to overhaul it all. Rather short on practical points, which I assume are covered much better in the other books available. nothing on furniture, desks, chairs, etc., or cabinets to store your stuff.
Working at home and loving it!.......2001-12-21
Like Powers's _Living with Books_ and Ellis's _At Home with Books,_ which I've reviewed in the past, this is the sort of lushly illustrated volume anyone with similar interests will sit and drool over. If you work at home, or if you need a second space at home for the overspill from your office job, you have a number of options: Claim a corner of an existing space in your house or apartment (living room, kitchen, even a niche off a hallway), convert a spare bedroom or even a walk-in closet, move into the attic or the basement (if you live in the part of the country that HAS attics and basements), make a separate dedicated space out of a garage or other outbuilding, or even construct a new space on your property, either attached to your house or semi-isolated in a handy patch of woods. (My own home office, like many others, used to be a kid's bedroom, and I haven't done much to it; it still has the Winnie-the-Pooh ceiling fixture.) The author walks you through all these possibilities and has you think about zoning and property-line setbacks, and floor and ceiling materials, and light sources and plumbing, and active storage and bookshelving. He also points out the need to control your workspace, to separate work from home life, and to identify "swing spaces." How much space do you really need? Maybe not as much as you think. Consider as a guide the acronym "CAMP," which stands for Computer station, Administrative station, Meeting station, and Project station. The need may be minimal (I never have clients in my home) and some of the others may be combined (I do admin work at the same work table where I do projects), but looking at it this way will lead you to reconsider your own SoHo. The pictures in this book, naturally, will make you jealous of those with the design talent and the money to establish such luscious work areas. The nicest and most unusual, not surprisingly, belong to architects working at home. Nevertheless, even with my own relatively simple needs, I picked up a number of ideas on how to optimize my own space.
The ultimate book on the subject.......2001-12-05
This is the ultimate book for planning an office at home. These practical suggestions will inform and inspire. The examples pictured spaces are so inviting, you'll enjoy looking at this book even if you work elsewhere! Highly recommended.
DOES YOUR HOME OFFICE LOOK LIKE A DISASTER AREA?.......2001-11-01
If your home office looks like it does not belong there, or it appears as though you are co-ordinating a world relief project in a disaster area, this book is for you. Included here are some wonderful floor plans (large and small areas) and beautiful photographs that will give you ideas on how to incorporate an efficient and attractive office space into your home. No, you do not have to move to the garage and you do not have to "live among the ruins" any longer.
Whether you are renovating an existing room, planning to add on an extra room, or building a completely separate facility, there is something here for everyone. If you find yourself with more files on the floor than in the filing cabinet, an inefficient computer station (there is nothing like getting tied up in the phone cord, while trying to find a vacant space on the top of your desk to maneuver that little mouse around,)it is time to make some chaanges and this book is for you. One is only limited by the size of their budget. Great ideas, great book!
