The classic novel of Jewish immigrants in new trade paperback format and design, with sixteen period photographs.
This masterwork of American immigrant literature is set in the 1920s on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and tells the story of Sara Smolinsky, the youngest daughter of an Orthodox rabbi, who rebels against her father's rigid conception of Jewish womanhood. Sarah's struggle towards independence and self-fulfillment resonates with a passion all can share. Not bad for the dreaded "required reading"!.......2006-11-10
This book was required reading for my history class, but it turned out to be a pretty fast and fun read. Though branded as a novel, this book reads very much like a turn-of-the-century (20th) biography of a young immigrant woman.
An Outstanding Book with Several Flaws.......2006-08-10
This book vividly portrays the culture clashes that arise when a parent remains devoted to Old World traditions and beliefs and a rebellious daughter sets out to find her own way in America. Reb Smolinsky, the family patriarch, is chronically unemployed and content to be supported by his wife and children while he spends his time in meditation and study of his beloved Torah. Sara's three older sisters find romance, but each in turn finds her chances at marriage and happiness sabotaged by their dictatorial father. Reb Smolinsky, insisting he knows best for his daughters, pairs them up instead with men they can't possibly love or be happy with. Sara decides to rebel before history repeats itself in her life, and in the face of horrendous condemnation and taunting by her father, leaves home to support herself and pursue a dream of becoming a teacher.
This is a fine story, which should have been written in third person narrative, considering the private conversations that occur in the early part of the book. Reb Smolinsky seems a bit exaggerated, and his oft-repeated citings of the Torah that say a woman without a man is less than nothing are not substantiated with book, chapter, and verse. One has to wonder, does the Torah really say such things? I tried to find proof of this, but could not find any. Also, some loose ends are left unresolved at the story's end, particularly the plot complication that ensues when Reb Smolinsky buys a grocery store in Elizabeth, New Jersey, only to find himself the victim of a clever swindle. Anyone who is only somewhat familiar with the history of the Lower East Side and the lives of early twentieth century immigrants will be left wondering if life was really this fraught with conflict, despair, and misery for daughters of Jewish rabbis unable to leave their Old World ways behind. How plausible is this story? What can we really learn from it? It is a book worth reading, nevertheless, although further reading and study will probably be needed to avoid being confused by the situations Ms. Yezierska has presented.
Awesome book.......2006-07-21
I read this book for a college English class many years ago. I just finished reading it again for about the 10th time. This book is just truely mesmorizing and captivating. You don't have to Jewish or an immigrant or a female struggling - this book is for anyone that is willing to let their mind enter a time where we have no idea what it was like first hand and to go off on a jouney. Matter of fact, all her books are wonderful as I've read them all, but Bread Givers is still my favorite. Sorry I'm not offering a critique of the book, I just simply love it and want to share it with everyone.
"All pioneers have to get hard to survive.".......2006-03-16
Anzia Yezierska's "Bread Givers" is, in a sense, two overlapping stories. The first half of the book is the melodramatic tale of an impoverished Jewish immigrant family living in the New York ghetto, a family suffering under the tyrannical and hypocritical piousness of the father. At times the foolishness and ineptitude of the father is almost comic, but the suffering inflicted on his family is harrowingly poignant. The second half is a psychologically and sociologically astute feminist coming-of-age tale, as the youngest daughter breaks from her family to re-define herself as an "Americanerin," leaving for college and eventually becoming a teacher in her old neighborhood. The broader strokes of the novel's opening give way to provocative considerations of the difficulties inherent in the narrator's at times ambivalent desires for assimilation within an alien culture and for a self-respecting independence from her own patriarchal family.
I wanted to shake some sense into Sara's father.......2005-11-05
for being such a tyrant, for spoiling his daughters' wedding plans, and for RUINING their lives -- and believe me-- that kind of stuff REALLY went on in those days! And I wanted to shake some sense into her mother for PUTTING UP WITH THIS!!!
Sara Smolinsky's life most probably parallels Anzia's real life. And if that is true, then I have the UTMOST respect for Sara/Anzia who against all odds, and especially as a woman back in the 1920's, found a place for herself and worked VERY hard to get that education and respect and "the good life" that all the middle-class American kids took for granted.
Someone reading this book today -- who has not read any books on the Immigrant experience or who has not become aquainted with Immigrant life in America in the early 20th Century -- wouldn't have a CLUE as to what it was really like back then, and to them this book would perhaps only serve to confuse or bore (!) them. Hopefully this book will not only shake readers out of their complacency, but it will encourage them to read other books about the Immigrant experience, such as "call it Sleep" by Roth.
The Bread-Givers is a great book.

Awesome Story! A Sensual Delight!.......2007-05-07
Lia Kennedy would do anything to get the resources to pay for the expensive surgery her young daughter Kaylee needed to repair the hole in her heart. If it meant traveling to Spain to beg her wealthy grandfather she would swallow her pride. What she didn't expect was she would have to pay a steep price.
Damian Marquez was a self-made millionaire but the illegitimate son of a noble Spanish family wanted more than wealth, he wanted recognition. Knowing that Benedicto Chavez-Torres is in financial difficulties he cements a deal where the elderly Don would get the funds he needed and marriage to the Don's granddaughter would give Damian the legitimacy he craved. The fact that Damian was passionately attracted to Lia was a bonus, but would a marriage survive once he learned of Lia's secret shame?
*** This was an incredibly romantic story of love that blossoms from blackmail and secrets. The author brought to my attention a strange medical problem I had never been unaware of and the publisher and the author are both to be congratulated for bringing it out into the open. Using an old blackmailed into marriage plot, the author put her own sensual spin to it bringing together wonderfully crafted secondary characters and an inspired secondary plot.
Damian, truly turned into a hero for me as he was wonderfully gentle, supporting and a pure alpha male who having been attracted to Lia from the very first was still interested years later before he finally captured her. Unaware of the true reason she agreed to the marriage he was delighted to discover that even as she had grown from girlhood to womanhood she was still a naïve young girl when it came to sensual matters. Discovering her secret the author let us see Damian's distress and then built on his determination to overcome and keep their marriage flourishing. Lia thinking Damian was a beast for going along with the blackmail soon came to realize that he'd not known of Kaylee's medical condition even though she herself harbored her own shameful secret. Both leads were shown to have human frailties but together, they succeeded in having a fabulous marriage of love and respect for one another that was a sensual delight for this reader.
Highly recommended.

Dashnee's Review - South Africa.......2006-05-31
This book was one of the greatest that I have ever read. Lucy Monroe had done a magnificent job with this one as she had done with others. I really had a great time reading it.I loved the hero's character alot. At first he was ruthless and wanted everything to go his way, but when he discovered the heroine's fear and unhappiness, he did everything to lessen her fear and make her comfortable with him. It shows what type of person he was. It showed his gentle nature, when it came to the woman he loved, as well as her child. It was by far one terrific piece of writing
Very unusual Harlequin romance.......2006-04-10
The heroine's medical plight is a very unusual one, for Harlequin, or indeed for any romance novel, and one has to applaud the publisher for bringing this problem out into the open. Framed within the typical blackmailed-into-marriage-plot, with a sick child being the linchpin, but enhanced by a truly tender hero, this is an exceptionally creative romance. I think, however, it would have been a stronger book if it had been written out of the Harlequin "box", since there are still many stereo-typical characteristics which detract from the main story of Lia & Damian and their special problem...the overbearing grandfather, the blackmail-into-marriage beginning, etc. The relative swiftness with which the heroine's problem is solved, is also distracting. But, as a piece of pure fiction, putting all my little complaints aside (and really, they are minor) it's a very good book. Not quite a keeper for me, really 3.25 stars, but still a good, deeper-than-usual Harlequin.
hot hot hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-24

Nothing is more important to Lia Kennedy than her daughter, Kaylee. She is devastated when she learns that Kaylee has a hole in her heart. A widow with few resources of her own, Lia can't possibly afford the expensive surgery. Her in-laws are willing to help but even if they sold everything they own, it wouldn't be enough. Lia is forced to turn to her rich grandfather in Spain for help. But his help comes at a steep price.
Damian Marquez is a savvy businessman who has amassed a great deal of wealth, but what he truly desires is recognition. Because of his illegitimate birth, his noble Spanish family refuses to acknowledge him. Benedicto Chavez-Torres can give Damian the title he desires. Although he has managed to hide it from most people, Benedicto is no longer a wealthy man. Damian is one of the few who know about his troubles and he's been helping the man deal with his financial difficulties. What better way to cement a partnership than marriage to Benedicto's granddaughter? Damian would finally have the legitimacy he desires, and Benedicto would have the funds he needs.
When Damian meets Rosalia Chavez-Torres Kennedy, he immediately likes what he sees. He assumes that Lia knows of her grandfather's plans. Damian never suspects that Benedicto is using his great-granddaughter as a pawn to force Lia into a marriage she doesn't want. He quickly begins to care for Lia and he adores Kaylee. Lia feels the physical attraction as well but she doesn't want marriage. And she certainly has no interest in a man who would go along with a blackmail scheme that could mean life or death for a little girl. Even if they somehow find a way to overcome their initial misconceptions, there's still another problem. It doesn't matter how strong the attraction between them becomes - Lia is physically incapable of intimacy in bed and she's convinced nothing can change that. Why would Damian want to marry her once he learns of her defect? He needs heirs and Lia won't be able to provide them. And if she doesn't marry Damian, how will Lia save her daughter's life?
Lucy Monroe always creates beautiful surroundings and intriguing characters, and she continues this tradition in BLACKMAILED INTO MARRIAGE. I admire Lia's strength and her devotion to her daughter and the way Damian responds to her difficulties with compassion and understanding, and not a trace of contempt. I hoped they would find a way to overcome the challenges in their path, find happiness and become a family. BLACKMAILED INTO MARRIAGE is passionate, thoroughly engaging and a wonderful story from beginning to end.

Deepsix is concerned with the motivating force that drives all scientists--the quest for truth, for expanding the limits of human knowledge. How much are we willing to risk for that moment of discovery, of knowing what no other soul yet knows? Our time? Our reputations? Our careers? Our lives?
The premise is this: just weeks before the planet Deepsix will be destroyed by a collision with a gas giant, ruins are detected on its surface, suggesting the presence of civilization. The Academy diverts scientists from the nearest spaceship to go down and explore, and they are joined by their century's Ellsworth Toohey: a misogynistic, sanctimonious gadfly who has never before been off of Earth's surface. The party's landers are destroyed in an earthquake induced by the approaching gas giant, so now they must find a way to get off of Deepsix before it is destroyed by the collision. Needless to say, their excavations are placed on the back burner.
The physics describing the space travel and the archeology used to reconstruct the lost culture of Deepsix are interesting and explained well. There is plenty of action and suspense--will the party survive? And the evolving characters and group dynamics are more complex than those usually found in science fiction books, making Deepsix a worthwhile read. --Diana Gitig
Book Description
In the year 2204, tragedy and terror forced a scientific team to prematurely evacuate Maleiva III. Nineteen years later, a rogue moon hurtling through space is about to obliterate the last opportunity to study this rare, life-supporting planet. With less than three weeks left before the disaster, superluminal pilot Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchins -- the only even remotely qualified professional within lightyears of the ill-fated planet -- must lead a small scientific team to the surface to glean whatever they can about its lifeforms and lost civilizations before time runs out. But catastrophe awaits when they are stranded on this strange and complex world of puzzles and impossibilities. And now Hutch and her people must somehow survive on a hostile world going rapidly mad -- as the clock ticks toward apocalypse for a doomed enigma now called...

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-24
This is another Priscilla Hutchins novel. She had previously discovered the existence of the Monument Makers and a probably location for their homeworld.
This is more of a rescue mission book, as an orginal Deepsix mission gets into trouble with dangerous alien lifeforms, and then again, when Hutchins is involved another pull out is needed.
The planet is of interest because of signs of past life that had not been noticed before.
Continuing the story of Hutch and the search for an understanding of the Omega Clouds.......2007-08-27
Though not quite as good as its predecessor, *Engines of God*, *Deepsix* continues the exploits of Superluminal pilot Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchins as she is diverted to the planet Deepsix, which is weeks away from being swallowed whole by a gas giant on a collision course. With a Gore Vidal-like passenger in Gregory MacCallister unwillingly in tow, Hutch must meet with a science team to help them solve the recently discovered mystery of Deepsix's dead advanced civilization before the clues are lost forever.
Twenty years earlier, a science party was mostly slaughtered by hostile life on the planet, and the only available scientist nearby to lead this new expedition is the disgraced commander of the first, lost expedition. To make matters worse for the party, oil and water collide as the commander holds a grudge against MacCallister for lambasting him publicly after the loss of the first crew.
The adventure really heats up though when a tidal earthquake caused by the impending destruction of the planet tears the ground asunder and the party's lander is lost. With time running out and helpless sightseers in the system to witness the planet's demise, the team must trek across a dying planet to find a lost lander from the first expedition and hope that it will provide them a way off in time.
But, this book is not all adventure, as we get a dose of McDevitt's intellectual science fiction as we also have opportunity to learn a little more about the Monument-Makers and Omega Clouds introduced in the first book set in this universe.
Riveting hard sci-fi/outdoor survival/archaeology tale.......2007-08-20
In the second novel in Jack McDevitt's Academy series, Prisilla Hutchins (Hutch) is back. Twenty years after the discovery of the home world of the Monument Builders in `The Engines of God', Hutch is sent to Maleiva III to perform a quick archaeological survey of the planet before it is destroyed by a collision with a gas giant. Remnants of an now vanished civilization are discovered there, and Hutch and her friends must find out as much as they can about them as quickly as possible. They have only three weeks to perform the survey before the planet and all traces of the indigenious civilization are destroyed. Things get real interesting when Hutch's ride off the planet is destroyed . . .
I'm surprised at the wide range of Amazon reviews for this novel. A few liked it, many thought it was a middlin' work, and a few hated it. I was absolutely riveted by this and read the entire book in two days, I couldn't put it down. I found the story to be compelling, the characters well developed, and much of the science plausible. This story is partly hard sci-fi, partly outdoor survival on an alien world, and partly an archaeological dig. The mystery of the natives is slowly revealed as Hutch and her stranded companions search for a way off the planet. This is much better than `The Engines of God' in my view. The interplay between the characters is more complex, and the characters themselves are better developed. There are a few places in the plot where things are just too coincidental, but this is a minor complaint. An engaging read, and one of the best in the hard sci-fi genre of the last decade that I've read.
Unengaging, Poor character development, Unsatisfying.......2007-07-31
This is one of the worst science fiction books I've ever finished. Because I finished it, I'm giving it a second star. But really, the characters are boring, the story is boring, the writing is horribly boring, and the ONLY thing worth reading this book for, answers to the questions about life on the planet, becomes a letdown at best. Points that I hated:
1. The characterization, if you want to call it that, of Macallister. Honestly, ALL of the characters in this book are incredibly, and shallowly, drawn. The "transformation" of Mac was laughably grade school. High school writers could manage to write something less sophomoric.
2. The parallel story in space was INCREDIBLY boring. It drug on forever. Zillions of characters were introduced that meant nothing to me. I began quickly scanning those pages about 2/3 of the way through. I should have began the book doing that.
3. The journey across the planet surface was tedious and boring and repetitive. And repetitive.
Honestly, I could name many more things. But the book isn't worth any more of my time reviewing it here. Stay away from this one.
I will say this -- I loaned two of Mcdevitt's books from the library, and the second book (Polaris) seems more engaging, so far (I'm about 50 pages in). The writing seems better, at least. Not sure about the storyline yet.
Confusing.......2006-12-24
I received this book recently as a present and sat down and read it. The only reason why I completed the book was because the basic story line was excellent. I was thirsty to find out about the history of the planet that seemed to be unfolding. The discovery was being made by a group of people who were stranded on this planet, Deepsix, soon to be destroyed by a gas giant. Many spaceship were close by to see the event of the planet being pulled apart by this gas giant, but weeks before the event it was found that the planet had a historical past. McDevitt established a story that was interesting, but kept going in and out of it, like he was on medication. Two stories unfolded, one of, which was the discovery of a civilization that was three thousand years old, and another, which was distracting. The other was the creation of a device to save the group from death. In the end, the discovery of the civilization was incomplete, the rescue was totally confusing, and the lack of establishment of all the characters drove me crazy. Thank God there was a glass of water nearby to quench my thirst. It sure was not this book.

The explanations and diagrams illustrating the celestial stems and branches in and of themselves are sufficient to render this volume unique in caliber and worthy of extreme contemplation.

Most helpful "I Ching".......2006-01-06
for me right now. And has been for the last 8 years. I refer to others sometimes (whether Cleary, or the Kuan Yin versions, LeGuin's is fun, Wing's workbook amazing, and the seminal but difficult to interpret translation by Legge). And have been intrigued by Karcher's when I've browsed in the bookstore, also recommended by one of my teachers.
This one always speaks to me when I consult it, or simply study it. And the introduction to chinese cosmology in the first section is so well written and an excellent introduction for beginners.
I'd recommend that beginners browse through the many books offered out there. This one came highly reommended by my teachers, and I continue to use it. Find one (or preferably several) that speak to "you". We all have our own path in the Tao to follow, pick your guide with your teacher or you own intuition.

Book Description
A Hopi Indian will tell you that a kachina is a supernatural being who is impersonated by a man wearing a mask. Small wooden dolls carved in the likenesses of the various kachinas are used to help teach Hopi children the tribal religion and traditions. Each child receives a doll made especially for him by his male relatives. He treasures the doll and studies it so that he can learn to recognize and respect the host of spirit kachinas that people the Hopi world.
Kachinas are difficult to classify because different Hopi pueblos have different ideas about their appearance and their functions. The late Dr. Harold S. Colton identified 266 different kinds of kachina dolls, and in this book he describes the meaning, the making, and the principal features of all of them. Each type of doll is pictured in a simplified line drawing. There is also an illustrated key to help the collector identify the various types.

Just heads.......2005-11-24
For the most part the depictions of the Kachinas in this book are line drawings of heads. That leaves out about 90% of what you may be interested in seeing.
Best Kachina book.......2003-06-01
This is by far the best Kachina book on the market. It was written by Harold S. Colton who spent a lifetime studying the Hopi indian culture. I found this book to provide the most accurate details of the Kachina. If you are pursuing an in-depth study of the Kachina, this book is for you.
Excellent Source.......2001-07-29

An excellent, informative book!.......2000-01-09
This book will be most helpful to you if you have a Hopi kachina and don't know which one it is (there are several hundred different kachinas). The book shows the different styles of masks and dress of the dolls, and also shows the differences in the little details such as mouths, eye shapes, colors the dolls are painted, feathers, and accessories that the dolls carry. The kachinas are listed with their names in English as well as Hopi, and the functions of the kachinas are given as well. The line drawings are very easy to understand, and the photographs are clear. Many of the dolls shown in this book are the older style non-action dolls (sometimes called "belly-ache dolls" because of the way their hands are positioned in front of their stomachs, as if they had belly aches), but there are some nice photos of more contemporary styled dolls too. I highly recommend this book!
An outstanding reference, as well as a great introduction........1999-02-21
This book is one of the best I've seen on the subject of kachina dolls and their carvers. A great reference as well as a strong introduction to the art. Describes the differences between Hopi and Navajo styles, with high quality photos. Along with my Barton Wright, this book is invaluable as a collecting reference book. The appendix includes a big list of Hopi carvers' names and a page of translated symbols.
Book Description
Quilts are a reflection of the people who make, use, and cherish them through the years. John Rice Irwin has personally conducted interviews with hundreds of old-time quiltmakers, some of whom were over one hundred years old. Detailed photographs taken by Pulitzer Prize winner Robin Hood depict an opulent conglomeration of quilts, from the community quilt which became known as the Murder Quilt. More importantly, Irwin looks under the quilts, at the lives of the people who created and used them. He explores their ambitions and aspirations, their struggles and disappointments. From the young ladies of Salem Valley who pieced a quilt for the town's most eligible bachelor in the hope that one of them would sleep under it, to the retired physician who began quilting in his late sixties to fill his spare time, Irwin presents their stories with compassion and candor. This lavishly illustrated volume is a treasure trove of creative needlework, colorful anecdotes, and intriguing personal histories which will entertain readers of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Unique style that hits the Appalachian home.......2007-01-10
This book isn't just about quilts and not just about people. This book is about how quilts helped a primitive Appalachian people survive the cold winters. Each quilt is not only described but the story of it's maker is told with it and why or how they made the quilt. There are amazing touching stories of survival throughout. A must read for collectors of quilts and for those who want to remember a past so different from today. Any Appalachian grandparent would treasure this book.
Absolutely breathtaking.......2002-08-31
I bought this book while visiting Williamsburg with a friend. It so captured my attention that I had to read some of the stories to my companion. We were both quickly enthralled. I brought it back with me and introduced my quilting group to it. Several more copies sold the next day. The stories are heart warming. The photographs are incredible.
The man who picked up quilting only after his wife passed. Well. Just amazing.
The wedding quilt made in the late 1800s by friends and relatives of the bride. Awe inspiring.
This book is not a "how to" book. But if you are interested in quilts, quilting and quilters, it is a must for your library.
Humane & understanding.......1999-06-22
This book is superb & worth the extra effort to special order it. The author interviews women (and a few men) of Southern Appalachia, where quilting as a mainstay of life has never really gone out of fashion -- hence they've never had a quilting "revival" either. Photographs are gorgeous, and the stories about the people make you feel rooted to the land. One of the more intriguing stories is the "Hanging Elephant" quilt, which shows an applique block of an elephant being hung for the crime of killing a Tennessee man in 1916. The book is printed on heavy, high quality paper. Quilt history buffs and anthropologists will love this book. As for hobbyists, it's not a how-to book, but the photographs will furnish much inspiration and food for thought.

Carving & Painting the American Kestrel with Floyd Scholz.......2007-10-10
Very informative book, I would recommend it. Lots of good photos and very detailed step by step instruction. I'm using this book to teach 3 beginning students to carve birds of Prey. Floyd Scholz books have been among the best. Thanks
Excellent !.......2007-03-19
Floyd Scholz has developed into a world class carver and his books reflect that care and precision with excellent instructions.
CARVING & PAINTING THE AMERICAL KESTREL.......2006-02-25
GREAT BOOK FOR THE POWER CARVER. HAND CARVERS CAN ALSO USE SOME OF THE TIPS AND INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN. HIGH A++
Another great book from Floyd.......2003-03-20
This is the best of the 'Carving & Painting' series of books, and should be on the shelf of every serious bird carver. Not only does it cover carving and painting techniques, but it provides some beautiful reference photos of male and female kestrels. It also discusses wood choices, tools, patterns, and design and composition. It's a lot of information at a very reasonable price!

Good Broad Overview.......2005-08-23
This book provides a broad, basic overview of most categories of interior materials, perfect for familiarizing the beginning student of interior design. The focus on issues of sustainabilty and cost makes this book stand out. This book sets out to provide a starting point for further study and research, and is effective in that capacity.
Disappointingly Obvious.......2005-06-15
This is a useful book if you've never seen the inside of a house. This is in no way a professional sourcebook. When I opened it up and saw listings- not categories, but individual listings- for "plywood", "carpet", "bricks", and so on, I felt bitterly disappointed. This is not the book to pick up to learn about technical specifications, the advantages and disadvantages of different wood species, or anything to do with the vast array of new materials that have recently come out (3Form Varia, Interface FLOR tiles, molded drywall, etc.) Take a walk through Home Depot instead.

8 1/2 x 11 3/8 200 color illustrations US and Canada Distribution graphic design Bold images married to equally bold colors characterize the signature style of Michael Schwab, a dynamic designer whose museum-quality work is assembled in one volume for the first time. The breadth of Schwab's quarter-century career is captured in these compelling pages. Shown are his pen-and-ink designs coupled with large, flat areas of striking color, which have been commissioned by some of the biggest names in American enterprise, notably World Series Baseball, Mondavi, the Sundance Film Festival, and the Muhammad Ali Center. Design professionals, students, and others concerned with graphic design will benefit from studying this fine body of work.

Inspiring, Inspiring, Inspiring.......2002-09-30
Schwab is the master at communicating so much with so little. His work is unmistakable and inspiring. His command of light and shadow is brilliant. This book is without a doubt the definitive collection of his work, though just a mere sampling I'm sure. One thing I love about the book is the fact that the body exhibits beautiful, large reproductions of his graphic work with no text, almost as if you were in a gallery looking at Schwab's work. The art is presented without interruption. Whether designer or illustrator you will find this book an invaluable and cherished resource for your library. Graphis has created a masterpiece with this one. It's big, beautiful, and worth every penny or more. BTW, the book was designed by Schwab himself. Simply inspiring! Bravo.

Great Stuff.......2002-03-14
There is a timeless and simplistic quality to Michael Schwab's work. He makes this stuff look easy when anyone who's ever done design work knows it is clearly not so. His logo designs are a pefect blend of color and form. That helps to make the product easily identifiable. I'm really not doing any justice to his work with my ranting... but if you're interested in art and design then I strongly recommend this book.
Book Description
All You Get is Me uncovers k.d.'s deepest emotions, from a commitment to animal rights that threatened to ruin her career, to her coming to terms with a sexuality that made her an unwitting poster girl for the lesbian and gay community. Full f rare photographs, this is the definitive biography of k.d. lang.

Well-researched Portrait of a Ground-breaking Entertainer.......2005-12-07
Before Ellen DeGeneres, there was kd lang and Melissa Etheridge who were the most famous "Out" entertainers. This is the only comprehensive biography of kd lang to date. It was published 10 years ago, so it is not current, but it is an excellent, detailed biography, nonetheless. Starr traces Lang's history starting with her childhood, her teenage years, and her struggle to break into the music business. Talented but strongly individualistic and proudly Out, it is not surprising "the Old Boy's Network" in Nashville boycotted lang and her "country punk" music, even though she had great songs, a tremendous voice and a huge fan base. Of course, kd did nothing to endear herself to the country radio DJ's or to the powers-that-be, which is unfortunate.
However, people in the industry thought highly enough of her talent to colloborate with her on albums (most notable is Owen Bradley, Patsy Cline's producer), resulting in powerful and memorable music.
The author presents a well-rounded portrait of kd, noting her flaws and mistakes as well as her triumphs. She writes objectively and clearly about her subject, without going into supermarket, tabloid trashiness that often accompanies biographies about controversial entertainment figures. If you're expecting to find steamy gossip about lang's personal life, thankfully you won't find it here.
It is an articulate and interesting read, but in dire need of an update. Still, it is one of the best lang biographies and I highly recommend it.
A must-read for all my sisters in St. Louis.......2004-07-23
The life story of a famous singer.
Even if I don't like her music, I like k.d. Having on the odd occasion appeared barefoot on stage, she seems like a decent human being.
A must-read for my sister, Julie, who's going through a very exciting time in her life now.
