Book Description
Annie Proulx has written some of the most original and brilliant short stories in contemporary literature, and for many readers and reviewers, Brokeback Mountain is her masterpiece. Now the major motion picture "Brokeback Mountain" is being hailed as equally masterful, with performances that are "the stuff of Hollywood history" (The New York Times). Brokeback Mountain: Story to Screenplay offers readers insight into how this classic short story was turned into an award-winning screenplay and film.
Brokeback Mountain was originally published in The New Yorker. It won the National Magazine Award. It also won an O. Henry Prize. Included in this volume is Annie Proulx's haunting story about the difficult, dangerous love affair between a ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy. Also included is the Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning screenplay for the major motion picture, written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. All three writers have contributed essays on the process of adapting this critically acclaimed story for film. This book is an indispensable tool for film students and aficionados.
Customer Reviews:
Very Interesting.......2007-06-27
This item took you through the entire life of the book to the screenplay to the movie. It was great reading what the writers said about the project and how it was a labor of love for everyone involved. It was wonderful reading how devoted everyone was to the project. Much how the two main characters were devoted to each other.
Learning to Write Short Story to Screeplay.......2007-02-16
In an effort to check out my approach to writing a book adaption to screenplay, I thought it would be a good exercise to experience how others have done it. After reading the Brokeback Mountain short story, then reading the shooting script, then watching the film, I knew I was right on target. It is invigorating to experience and understand the progression from story to screenplay to film. The book also includes backround information from the short story writer, Annie Proulx and the two screenwriters, Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, which tops off the value of this book. Reading it is a great process, and once you've read the book, you'll appreciate the film even more.

Brokeback - story to screenplay - Absolutely Fabulous!!!.......2007-01-18
This is an excellent addition to anyone's book collection - not only do you receive Annie Proulx's wonderful story, but you can experience Larry McMurtry's and Diana Ossana's sweet, lilting and poignant screenplay. Ennis and Jack jump off the page, fictional characters who have somehow become real, as we are transported with them through the most beautiful twenty years of their star-crossed lives. No, it is not a story about gay cowboys....it is a story about two young men who find love and happiness in an unlikely relationship, and simply don't know how to handle it. The part of this story that always grabs me is that through a simple twist of fate, the entire ending could have been different.
I suggest this book couple with the movie - seeing the screenplay come to life through Heath Ledger's and Jake Gyllenhaal's performances is spell bounding.
It was a fascinating read to see the short story move from Annie's simple prose to screenplay. And the chapters at the end which discuss the story and the filming of this heart-wrenching story is worth the price. I highly recommend it. Thanks for listening.
The movie script and original story.......2007-01-03
This is the original story by Annie Proulx as well as the movie script. Great for fans of the film as a collector item.
A Companion Piece That's Well Worth It.......2006-08-26
There has been some time and distance since my first introduction to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. It was shortly before the limited release date of the film on December 9, 2005. I don't even remember what feature film I had gone that day to see, but I remember the preview of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN vividly. As I walked out of the theater, I made it a point to ask if the film would be coming to that particular location. The manager was standing near by and told me that it would not; that when it was released in our area, it would be most likely in special art theatres. It didn't come to my area until sometime in January, 2006. Before it's arrival, I had read Annie Proulx' short story by the same name four times. It was not only in the collection of short stories CLOSE RANGE: WYOMING STORIES but had also been released in a fifty-five page hardback edition on it's own because it was now a major motion picture.
The first time I saw the film, I already understood the loneliness that existed in Ennis Del Mar's and Jack Twist's lives and what made them latch onto each other that summer on Brokeback Mountain. What I didn't know and was not prepared for was how well the screenplay would enhance the story and fill in the gaps that the story hinted at but left the reader only to imagine. Nor could I know that the actors who played Ennis, Jack, Alma, Lureen, Aguirre, Alma Jr., Fayette and L. D. Newsome, Cassie, and Jack's mother and father would flesh out their characters so well that they would become like real people to me, even more real. The film had a life changing effect on me. I had lied to myself for years believing that I didn't desire or need someone to be in love with, not in the way that Ennis and Jack loved each other. I came away knowing that passion like that is worth it even when you lose as Ennis and Jack did. I've lost count of how many times I've read the story and seen the film especially since I own the DVD and it's magic has not left me still.
I bought the book BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN: STORY TO SCREENPLAY because I wanted the story and screenplay in print together for easier comparison. The three essays by Annie Proulx, Larry McMurtry, and Diana Ossana at the end are icing on the cake. The fact that this story became a full length feature is a major miracle and the world is greatly heightened by it.

DEA agent Domino Petracelli is chasing a career-making promotion and nothing will keep her from getting her man. Okay, so she'd rather infiltrate a drug cartel than go undercover as a dominatrix at D.C.'s Xecutive Branch sex club. But she's up to the task. As the leather-clad Mistress Bella, Domino investigates the club's drug ring while juggling a surreal roster of kinky submissives and resisting one sexy client who's not what he seems. Police detective Dalton Cutter is a man with a mission avenging his partner, who was murdered investigating the Xecutive Branch. Retracing his partner's steps, he goes undercover as a club client. Dalton's handled killers, junkies and pimps, but can the Alpha-male cop act submissive long enough to fool Mistress Bella? And will their sexual chemistry, crackling louder than Bella's whip, derail Dalton's investigation? This romantic suspense pokes a bit of fun at the alphabet soup of D.C. law enforcement agencies, famous for their lack of interdepartmental cooperation. Imagine what could happen if several agencies unknowingly put operatives undercover at the same location let the sparks fly!
Customer Reviews:
At Her Command.......2007-09-03
Dominique Petracelli, Domino, loves her job and takes it very seriously. She has worked hard to be the best DEA agent possible and it has not always been easy as it is a male dominated world. The department has just found themselves in the possession of some very interesting information regarding the death of a local police detective. Domino cannot believe what her new assignment is...she is going undercover in a sex club as a dominatrix.
Dalton Cutter cannot believe his partner and best friend, Jason, was found dead of an apparent overdose. Dalton does not believe for one minute that Jason died of an overdose. He blames himself as Jason was doing undercover work in a local sex club and the job had really been assigned to Dalton. Even though Dalton is taken off the case, he decides to do a little investigating on his own. Dalton is joining the club and going in as a client.
Domino is very nervous about her assignment and does not know what to except from her first client, but it definitely is not the sexy man who certainly does not want to actually be "dominated" by Mistress Bella. Dalton is very uncomfortable about meeting Mistress Bella and is shocked by his attraction to her. While the attraction between the two is strong and instantaneous, both realize that their relationship can go nowhere. Neither realizes that they are basically working the same case until one night when they both almost get caught by the boss. As they start working together, their relationship takes them to even higher levels. Will their relationship be as strong once they have finished the case?
At Her Command was a fun, sexy, and thoroughly entertaining read! Marcia James writes characters that draw you in and have your rooting for them from the start. Domino is a strong and smart woman who knows exactly what she wants until she meets Dalton. Dalton is a no-nonsense detective who does not really believe in love. I loved the sexual tension between Domino and Dalton and the scenes with Mistress Bella were great. At Her Command was plain and simply fun and Marcia James is definitely going on my must read list!!

She'd entrusted her lands to his skill, but her heart was another matter . . .
Sir Henry was a knight-errant, capable of impressive prowess on the battlefield . . . and in bed. Finding two sisters -- one stunningly beautiful, the other steadfast and determined -- waiting patiently in his chamber, he entertained their proposition: a generous sum in exchange for commanding their men-at-arms in a battle to save their lands.
Seduced by the beauty of Gisele, yet irresistibly drawn to the intelligence of Mathilde, a proud woman as complex as her secrets, Henry accepts their offer. But as invaders close in, it is Mathilde who must dare to trust her deepest desires . . . and the man willing to fight for all he is worth to prove his honor.

pleasurable medieval romance .......2006-02-01
In 1243 Martin informs Sir Roald De Sayre that he has insured that the garrison at Ecclesford has the worst weapons and ill trained knights in England, setting it up for failure. Roald pays off the former Ecclesford Commander by killing him.
Not long afterwards, with their father dead due to the betrayal of his Commander Martin, sisters Mathilde and Giselle know their home Ecclesford is in jeopardy of odious Roald taking it over though the older sibling inherited the castle. They need a knight to protect them so they venture to a nearby inn where they enlist the drunken Sir Henry D'Alton. He agrees to help because he loathes Roald. He changes his plans especially after learning that the beautiful quiet Giselle is quite a prize catch since through her he also can be the lord of Ecclesford. To his chagrin, the mouthy protective younger sister Mathilde heats his blood, but first he must deal with the odious Roald who will do anything to take Ecclesford including taking the new owner without her agreeing.
HERS TO COMMAND is a pleasurable medieval romance that contains a wonderful romance between the knight and the "termagant. The relationship between Henry and Mathilde is delightful as she rips his skin for even considering her sibling while he rips his skin for considering her. Though Roald is too nasty of a sociopath, fans will enjoy the" shrew's" taming of the knight. No one writes a medieval romance quite like this talented author.

Book Description
The date is 1966 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now, and the Republic, created by the human race but not yet dominated by it, finds itself in an all-out war against the Teroni Federation, an alliance of races that resent Man's growing military and economic power. The main battles are taking place in the Spiral Arm and toward the Core, but far out on the Rim, the Theodore Roosevelt is one of three ships charged with protecting the Phoenix Cluster, a group of seventy-three inhabited worlds. Old, battered, some of its weapon systems outmoded, the Teddy R. is a ship that would have been decommissioned years ago if a war wasn't raging. Its crew is composed of retreads, discipline cases, and a few raw recruits. But a new officer has been transferred to the Teddy R. His name is Wilson Cole, and he comes with a reputation for heroics and disobedience. Twice he has ignored or exceeded his ordersboth times he has presented the Republic with unexpected triumphs, and both times he has had his ship and crew shot out from under him. Now, he's been banished to the Teddy R., where he will be a mere second officer, behind Captain Makeo Fujiama and Executive Officer Podok, a fierce Polonoi female.
Tensions rise on the Teddy R., discipline is lax, and Wilson Cole is not a man to sit idly by as a war rages elsewhere. But the Phoenix Cluster is the last place in the galaxy that the enemy would think of attacking. Or is it? With Starship: Mutiny, five-time Hugo winner Mike Resnick brings his prodigious imagination to bear on his very first military SF. Will the galaxy ever be the same?

Drawing on scientific research, Native American culture, the ancient traditions of the Egyptians and Greeks, the philosophies of the Hindus, and the religions of the East, Rosalyn L. Bruyere presents a unique perspective on the value and healing potential of the chakra system.

WHEELS OF LIGHT.......2007-08-01
I was extremely pleased with the content of WHEELS OF LIGHT. I could tell from the start that the author put a lot of thought into every paragraph. Each chakra is historically and metaphysically described. There are helpful exercises for you to do to balance and vitalize the chakras. I especially love the way the author relates chakra "health" to physical and mental health. The illustrations are grand and you'll feel "boned up" on chakras and auras by the time you finish reading this excellent text.
Absolutely insightful.......2007-05-26
When I was younger, I picked up this book at the library but put it back because of its outdated design cover. I recently saw it again at a bookstore, and decided to buy it, and I do not regret it at all! This book was exactly what I was looking for on the chakras-- it's not too textbook-like, and it's written from a humble, intuitive perspective. I just wish that it were longer! Out of all the chakra books I have read, this one by far has taught me the most on energy, vibrations, auras, etc.
Wheels of Light.......2006-08-10
This is an interesting book, but I found it hard to understand.
Truly inspiring!.......2000-01-28
I have read this book numerous times and I learn new things every time. If you're looking for a more peaceful life and intrigued by the power of natural healing. Other great books that I would recommend are; Hands of Light & Creative Visualization. Read with an open mind and enjoy!
A resourceful, insightful introduction to the chakras........1998-01-01
Wheels of Light begins with an introduction to the "mysteries" of the chakras. It reveals the touching story of the Rainbow Warrior who healed and prophesied because he could see the rainbow beyond the rainbow. Color, vibration, and auras are explained in detail. Several chapters unfold the secrets of the chakras in beautiful detail.

La Cucina degli Innamorati.......2005-01-21
I have the italian translation for this cookbook and I have to emphasize the fact that the food photography is STUNNING!
I tried the very first recipe...Zuppa di funghi champignon al latte di cocco (Mushroom soup w/coconut milk), and loved the flavors. It was that delicious. I am already sold on the rest of the book without trying the recipes. If anything, just going through the pages makes you feel all romantic-feeling inside, and the name (translated in english) speaks for itself. Cooking for Lovers.

a great book for those researching dolls of the fifties and early sixties. i could almost smell the new doll scent as i was carried back to those christmases many years ago. quite a little trip for so little money!
Good Reference Book for Us 50's Kids.......2006-03-02
I found a wealth of information in this book about dolls from the smaller companies and on Mattel's budding doll line. I even found a few I had as a child but have not seen in other books and had not been able to ID until now. A lot of doll accessories are included for specific dolls that are not usually seen unless you have an old ad or catalog /booklet for that doll. This is a good addition to any collector's library and nicely showcases the dolls and girl toys of the era many of us think was the best of American dolls .
Teri Lee Teri lee.......2006-01-31
This book is good but VERY lacking in pictures of some of the more desirable dolls like Tiny Betsy McCall - not one picture!
Ditto with many other dolls. Teri Lee gets about 6 pages, most other dolls and manufacturers get 2 pages and sometimes NO pictures. Way out of proportion! I was disappointed at the unbalanced coverage, even though the book was very nice.
