Book Description
Northern New Jersey has a new local hero on its cultural crime turf. He's Andy Carpenter, the Paterson defense attorney who can sling a quip as fast as he can outmaneuver a snarling prosecutor. Acclaimed author David Rosenfelt's first novel, was nominated for an Edgar Award, now in this new novel, the intrepid lawyer is thrust into the spotlight where he risks becoming a media victim...of the most fatal kind.
His streak of murder case acquittals made him a regular on cable talk shows. His recent $22 million inheritance bought him a dog rescue operation named the Tara Foundation after his own beloved golden retriever. Yet after turning down cases left and right, Andy Carpenter thinks he's facing a midlife crisis.
When a friend, a newspaper owner, calls in a favor and asks him to protect his star reporter, Andy is less than thrilled. His new client is Daniel Cummings, a journalist who is being used as a mouthpiece by a brutal serial killer. Things only get worse when Daniel is discovered near the body of the murderer's latest victim. And after Andy himself starts collecting anonymous death threats, he hears the news every defense lawyer dreads...and moves to within a dangerous keystroke of becoming tomorrow's obituary.
Customer Reviews:
Great!!.......2007-09-19
Another great one from Rosenfelt. I enjoyed his first two books more than this one, but still a wonderful entry into the Andy Carpenter series.
A fun read........2007-05-12
Great wit and fast paced. The characters just become more rich with each book.
Rosenfelt Scores Big Again!.......2007-03-14
Rosenfelt succesfully follows up his first two novels, Open And Shut and First Degree, with Bury The Lead. Rosenfelt has become one of the freshest voices among today's mystery writers due to his ability to provide interesting plots, credible courtroom drama, lots of humor and well-developed major and minor characters. Andy Carpenter, the main character who is a wise-cracking suburban New Jersey defense attorney, is one that stays in your mind even after you finish the book and is one that I'm looking forward to 'hang out' with in his future legal adventures. Plus, his dog, Tara, is one I wish I had. The only factor that keeps me from giving Bury The Lead a 5-star rating is being able to guess who the murderer is a bit too easily; although figuring out the motive for the murders will, I think, keep you guessing. Despite this very minor criticism I highly recommend Bury The Lead when you're in the mood for a fast-paced, easy read. However, you might want to first consider reading Open And Shut and First Degree, which I think will further your appreciation of Bury The Lead.
Preppie versus Predator.......2006-07-28
Andy Carpenter is a politically-correct (except when it comes to sports and vegetarianism) yuppie lawyer who runs a rescue mission for dogs and dates a woman who can beat him up. He doesn't practice much law, only handling cases that interest him. He can do this because he's independently wealthy, having come into some $22,000,000.00 through no fault of his own.
As Andy whiles away the hours doing whatever he pleases, a serial killer stalks the women of his community, strangling them, taking their clothing, and cutting off their hands. When a local reporter gets arrested for the murders on seemingly ironclad evidence, Andy takes the case as a favor to a friend. Aided by an ensemble cast of recurring characters (this is the third book in a series), Andy seeks to free his client, find the real killer, and watch as much football as possible. The plot takes a number of Byzantine twists and culminates in a climax which is something of a mixture of Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler.
The writing is brisk and immediate, being done in the first person and the present tense; the humor is fast-paced; and the courtroom narrative is completely out of touch with reality. During the trial, which begins with the prosecutor giving an opening statement that should have resulted in a mistrial, Andy spends almost as much time watching sports and cavorting with friends as he does defending his client. Despite the author's apparent unfamiliarity with the inside of a courtroom, the plot sweeps you along to the deus ex machina climax.
I could not help but compare this mystery to John Maddox Roberts' SPQR series. Roberts brings Ancient Rome to life, Rosenfelt does the same for present-day Patterson, New Jersey. Roberts surrounds his protagonist with an ensemble of remarkable, interesting characters, Rosenfelt surrounds his protagonist with an ensemble of remarkably shallow characters. Roberts' plots begin slow and accelerate to a breakneck pace and an exciting conclusion, likewise for Rosenfelt. Lurking in the background of Roberts' stories are the Machiavellian Julius Caesar and Pompey, the mob boss Dominic Patron does the same for Rosenfelt's story. I prefer Roberts' Ancient Rome to Rosenfelt's Patterson, New Jersey, but I find Andy Carpenter sufficiently interesting to want to read the rest of the series.
Mystery with humor.......2006-06-27
Fast paced mystery with some humor. A well written light read with plenty of surprises.

Book Description
Hollywood Nights . . . Leading To Hollywood Days
When U.S. Navy Seal Chief Wes Skelly was sent to L.A. on assignment, he agreed to go on a blind date with beautiful single mother Brittany Evans, sister-in-law of a fellow SEAL. After all, he had been secretly in love for years, albeit with a woman who belonged to another man. So what did he have to lose?
Plenty, it turned out. Because suddenly the woman he thought he could never have was available. However, so was Brittany -- and not only that, she was in danger. Because of him. He knew he could keep her safe. But why was he increasingly certain that he was the one in danger?

Wild, wild, sexy Wes...........2006-10-20
Carrying an unrequited torch for the wife of one of his teammates, short and stoic Navy SEAL Wes Skelly is on leave in LA and reluctantly agrees to a blind date with the sister in law a friend. He doesn't count on anything coming of it; after all he's in love with Lana. Single mom Brittany takes his breath away. They immediately have a rapport and he soon finds himself sharing far more with her than any other woman, including details about his love for Lana. Brittany is so different from any woman he has ever met - a total Earth mother, she adopted a troubled boy who was in and out of foster care. When his credit card is declined for their supper, she offers to let him stay on her couch while he is in LA.
Lana's sister, Hollywood "It girl" Amber Tierney has an amorous fan on the brink of stalking; at Lana's request, Wes agrees to look into her security. Of course, Amber has eyes for Wes; Wes suddenly has eyes for Brittany; Brittany has eyes for Wes but thinks he is hopelessly devoted to Lana...
When her son Andy goes to an out of town game, Brittany and Wes suddenly find themselves in close quarters and fighting their growing attraction to each other. When their relationship takes a physical turn, Brittany is just waiting for the floor to drop, and for him to leave her for Lana since the casual agreement they have is suddenly turning more permanent for her. Would he suddenly dump her if Lana were free? We is not sure of his feelings for Brit, but when her safety is in question, all his years of building walls come tumbling down.
Brockmann's 11th in the TDD series has a great tortured duo with so much chemistry dripping off the page you cannot help but hope for a happily ever after. Her heroine is not a wallflower that waits on the sidelines. The only complaint I had was the dialogue was a bit juvenile for two 30-something adults. Like I'm not like sure they'd like talk like that. Despite the dialogue and the constant mentions of Wes's stature, I really liked the story and found myself engaged to the very end.
Truly enjoyed this book!.......2004-04-18
Night Watch by Suzanne Brockmann, is a book you don't want to overlook. The story will have you eagerly turning the pages!
I agree, this is this writer's best!.......2004-03-19
Night Watch is this writers best book so far. Exciting, hot, and yes...it rocks!
Fun Plot!.......2004-03-14
Night Watch was such a fun story. I loved the steamy characters!
Brockmann's best.......2004-02-18
I've been reading Suzanne Brockmann for a while now, and I think she does the humor thing well (but not as well as Jennifer Crusie), the sex thing in a way that's really quite extremely very (I can't think of another intensifier, but you get the idea) hot, and that usually doesn't make me cringe (sorry, I start laughing when sensitive things get laved and suckled), and the testosterone-blessed alpha-male thing like nobody else, but this is her first book that I don't have ANY quibbles with. And I really fell for Wes--maybe because he WASN'T tall, dark and handsome, he was short, fair, and his face was "...a face. Not stunningly handsome...but not Frankenstein's monster, either." When the two of them begin feeling the attraction, they start describing each other as beautiful/handsome, but this feels quite appropriate. The inner dialogue of both characters seems very authentic, and the conversations always read very smoothly--none of the jarring turns of phrase that can take you right out of a storyline. And it was a compelling story, because they were easy characters to care about. Only after reading it again did I start having any 'wait a minute' moments--like, why did Wes bring along a dress uniform to LA in the first place? How can he reach into his pocket for his wallet and the condom in it when...maybe this one should be left to the imagination. But I couldn't really even call those quibbles, I just had to admire how smoothly such details were slipped by me the first time. In fact, I just had to admire it by rereading it over and over again.

Customer Reviews:
Ok, if you have all the books don't buy this one........2006-09-08
However, if you are new to the Vorkosigian saga then buy these compilation books. What makes these books exceptional is that they generaly incude 2 novels and either a short story or a novella. Right now I don't have the book in review with me so I will not write a specific review. Later on, when I do have it in hand I will do so. Instead I will give an overview of the series.
Who is Miles? Well he is at least two people, Miles Vorkosigian, heir to his fathers title and a mutie (he really isn't but if you look at him you would think so). He is also Admiral Naismith, mercenary naval leader of an elite mercenary unit that specializes in covert rescue operations and revolutionary movements. The super books chronical the adventures of Admiral Naismith and his Betan mother. What hasn't been compiled is really a look at Miles whithout a dual personalty.
Lois McMaster Bujold has earned her Hugos and Nebulas the hard way with well written stories, superb characterization, and novel ideas on what makes humans click. Cordelia's Honor is the first super book in the series and details the trials and tribulations of Aral Vorkisogian, the Butcher of Komarran; and his Dear Captian, the fearless daughter of Beta Colony. Actually Cordelia Vorkisogian is the real hero in the first super novel, the first 2 books in the Vorkosigian Chronicles, and she almost lives up to her son's reputation.
Are the Vorkosigian novels worth reading? HELL YEAH!!!! Warning where as most novels take me a day to a little over a day to read, these books demand on average 2 to 2 and a half days, and these are barn burning give up sleep and work page turning novels that you can't put down!
Start with Cordelia's Honor if you insist on reading in chronological order. Start with any book avalable in your favorite bookstore as reading out of turn is not detrimental to your reading enjoyment. Better yet read all of the super books first and then read what is left.
Lois McMaster Bujold is one of the most decorated authors in science fiction, only Robert Heinlein has more nominations. Every time a new book is translated into a new language that country's Hugo people instantly nominate it for their Hugo equivalent award. I expect her to become the acknowledged Mother or Grandmother of SCI-FI, her ownly competition is Anne McCaffrey.
Death is not the end.......2006-07-10
Very enjoyable, filled in the holes for me as I had read subsequent adventures/books and needed to know what circumstances lead up to Miles' death and explains Mark's Black Gang. Maintains the tradition.
Miles Errant.......2006-07-04
While all of these three stories have been in print before it was nice to see them together. Lois is one of the best writers out there.
A terrific collection! But read "Labyrinth" first.......2006-06-05
The two novels included here may well be the best of the whole series. But to fully appreciate "Brothers in Arms", you need to read the novella "Labyrinth" first, because it gives a lot of the backstory (as well as being excellent in its own right). You can find "Labyrinth" in the collection "Miles, Mystery, and Mayhem".
The Best Vorkosigan Story - So Far.......2006-06-04
A great omnibus, containing three amazing tales of Miles Vorkosigan's military days:
"The borders of infinity": Miles lets himself be sent to a POW camp the Cetagandans have set up to hold the captured Marrilacan soldiers (one who read "Cetaganda" would remember the Marillacans were counting too much on the Cetagandans' help... and it did eventually turn against them). The only hope for Marrilac is a captive officer... and in getting him out Miles will first free everyone alse. Superb writing, highly emotional. I loved it to tears!
"Brothers in arms": following the few intense moments of actual fighting, there are the times Miles (and his Fleet accountants) hate most: the tallying up of the losses and the paying of bills... A bit short of money, Miles juggles with his identities on Earth, unaware that the last Komarrran resistance forces, led by the pretty mad Ser Galen, is plotting to replace him with his clone&torture bred brother Mark-Pierre. Taken by surprise, Miles has only the feeble hope he's not so easily confusable, and that Galen's son, a loyal captain, will help him get escape his would-be tomb. Mark-Pierre emerges powerfully as an anti-Miles personality, but endowed with the same capacities... a threat to the hyperactive little Admiral/Lord.
"Mirror dance": the masterpiece of the series so far!!! Mark-Pierre gathers all his courage and attempts to free the clones on a Jackson's Whole clinic... and the Vorkosigan luck sticks to him as to Miles: he loses the clones, the battle, Miles' Dendarii mercs, and gets Miles killed, all in one day's work!
Saved by payment, in Miles' place, Mark is thrown in the world of Barrayar, the one place in the universe he tried never to set foot upon. Confronted with the "real" Vorkosigan's place, Mark has one chance to redeem himself: get a new rescue mission on track to hunt for Miles' maybe-not-so-dead-after-all body... After touching with the tips of his fingers the promise of salvation, Mark loses everything, including his sanity, when captured by the torture-master Baron Ryoval...
A heart-wrenching tale. The twin Vorkosigans are the faces of the coin: one up when the other one is down, and the one that surfaces gets to live, while the other might be left to drown.
Why can't words be enough?... This is a DO NOT MISS!!!
Therefore i'm keeping my copy of it. You go get your own :).

What did Jamaican reggae singer Bob Marley and Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia have in common? A love for the Kebra Negast, holy book of Ethiopian Christians and Jamaican Rastafarians. Contemporary scholars date the Kebra Negast to the 14th century, but it retells the stories of much earlier Biblical times, one very important story in particular. According to the Kebra Negast, the Israelites' Ark of the Covenant was spirited away to the ancient kingdom of Ethiopia by wise King Solomon's own son, offspring of the union between Solomon and the exotic Queen Makeda of Ethiopia (a.k.a. the Queen of Sheba). Gerald Hausman, a consummate storyteller of native traditions, presents the core narrative of the Kebra Negast, from Adam to the rise of the Ethiopian Solomonid dynasty. On top of this, he injects his own encounters with Rastafarians during his travels in Jamaica--dreadlocked Rastas as modern-day Samsons, their unwavering faith in Jah, and a rare outsider's glimpse at the Nyabinghi ceremony. The combination of ancient tale and modern belief give Hausman's Kebra Negast the rich flavor of enduring truth. --Brian Bruya

Customer Reviews:
VERY INSPIRATIONAL!.......2006-07-12
This book is an excellent read. I did not want to put down. It explained alot of what I felt was a bit unexplained in the bible. I have not finished the book yet but i Highly recommend it.
Decent Buy.......2006-05-05
I got this book a while back. It's a very nice book if you have a bad attention span, and you need what your reading to be simple. If your looking for the in depth historical version, then this probably won't be the book for you, but if you're looking for a real good Light reading, then this might be a good purchase.
A must read.......2002-06-04
The Kebra Negast is a must read for anyone on the path of black consciousness and understanding the truth of our place in the Bible. Reading the Kebra Negast really helped me understand Rastafari, I hate that I completed the book I wanted more. I wished women played a larger role and that the interpretation of doing God's will was a bit less damning like in all religions.
Let the reader beware.......2001-09-13
This version is not to be confused with the classic text of Ethiopian religion/mythology of the same name. This version contains excerpts from the classical ancient text and combines it with anecdotes and sayings of rasafarianism, which is itself a recent concept dating back to the days of Selassie's coronation in 1930 (another story altogther). Basically, this version tries to connect the classic text with modern rastafarianism. If you're interested in rastafarianism, you can go ahead with this. But if you're interested in an English translation of the actual Kebra Nagast (Glory of Kings), see the E.A. Wallace Budge translation or the Miguel Brooks translation.
Interesting read.......2001-04-21
My husband bought this right after he heard about it. He is heavily into Rastafarianism and wanted to check it out. He read the book in two days and has since lent it to several friends. If you are into this kind of stuff, it offers a lot of info on the culture and outlook.

Book Description
Antique furniture can be surprisingly affordable. In this handbook, BBC Antiques Roadshow expert Christopher Payne explores the main areas of furniture, showing how to recognize qualities, periods, and types of wood. All the major forms of furniture are explored, including tables, seating, mirrors, and screens.
Customer Reviews:
Great Photos.......2000-10-13
Millers is a clear, concise book and very well organized. My experience in the past with antique books is that there are very few photos of the items they are describing. This format is great if you already know the basics about antiques but it makes in almost impossible for a beginner to identify and price items just from a description. Millers provides tons of colour photos, with brief descriptions of what items were used for, what makes them valuable, what things devalue them and an estimate value. This format makes for quick and easy identification of hundreds of pieces. This is the perfect beginner/intermediate antique resource guide.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photos, but lacks enough ideas for the beginner..........2007-07-26
If you are a beginner decorator, or a person just starting out in a new home, this book might overwhelm you. The reason I say this is because most beginners could never afford the expensive items and furniture photographed in this book.
The rooms photographed in this book are in the "classic" style--mostly.
The book does show the various color foundations in each room, though it does not go into great detail as to how to layer the colors themselves. For this reason, the reader may want to pick up a more "basic" book on COLOR first, such as "Color:The New Color Book" by CHRONICLE BOOKS, or "The Comfort of Color" by Susan Sargent.
Not such a great deal.......2002-12-15
The price may be cheap but you get what you pay for. I think that there are other books out there that do a better job of introducing interior decoration to first timers. This book did not show a wide range of design styles and the pictures are starting to look out-dated.
Recommendation: Choose another book.
Other Sources: If you want a better basic introduction to interior decoration, I suggest 1000 Practical Ideas for Home Decoration. This book even has tips for those who are design junkies. It has beautiful photographs, and many different styles are represented. Plus, the author has a great sense of humor. If you want to learn more about different design styles in particular, a good choice is The Ultimate Home Style Guide by Katherine Sorrell, or try the books from the Architecture and Design Library. They have books on styles ranging from Arts & Crafts to Retro Modern and from India Style to Mediterranean Style.
A Great Primer on Decorating.......2002-04-27
This is everything you might hope for in a basic decorating book. The first half is devoted to illustrating various styles of decorating and explaining how to make them work. The selection of motifs is quite eclectic (although not exhaustive) so there is something for everyone here. The remainder of the book discusses design elements such as colors, patterns, furnishings, window treatments, etc. The focus throughout is on giving concise, practical advice with over 200 color photos to support the text.
This is an easy read with a wealth of useful advice and a more than adequate number of pictures to help generate ideas. Want to know how best to showcase a collection? Trying to figure out which color to paint the walls to best highlight your wood furniture? The answers are here along with a great many other common issues.
If this book has a limititation, it is this. It is not an encyclopedia of decorating, it's a starting point. Since the title of the book is Decorating Basics, however, I do not consider this a flaw. For a modest price, you can get a great book to get you started on visualizing what kind of decor might work for you.

Cool!.......2001-04-27
There are six sturdy pre-cut stencils in this little book from Dover. The dinosaurs are clearly labeled, and the perfect size for lots of projects. They're handy for painting dinosaurs on bookcases or cupboards, for making posters and feltboards, for decorating t-shirts and mirrors. The dinosaurs in this book include a great stegosaurus, a neat dimetrodon, and a stylish triceratops, as well as a tyrannosaurus, a flying rhamphorynchus, and a stately diplodocus.
Book Description
Add instant interest to school reports and other flat surfaces with images of the massive Eoceratops, the double-horned Chasmosaurus, the vegetarian Iguanodon, and 3 other prehistoric beasts.
