More philosophical than practical........2004-12-09
Dan Gable is the man, there can be no doubt. But I was a little disappointed with this book. I was expecting more of an instruction manual, but this is more about the philosophies of coaching. It's not a bad book and I don't regret getting it, but it wasn't what I was expecting. It is about coaching from a mostly theoretical standpoint. I think I was expecting a book more like the book "Winning Wrestling Moves" and this led to my slight disappointment.

A good mix of stories, technique, and coaching philosopy. Not everyone will be able to get away with having the coaching style Dan Gable does but he shows how he has made it successful. I would recommend this book to any coach interested in learning and touching the souls of thier athletes.

Many wrestlers and coaches may base their reviews of a coaching book on the quantity or quality of moves found within. I do believe that the book does well in this area. However, its true success is in its discussion and advice on communication, motivation, planning and developing a philosophy. It is what separates it from other "how to wrestle" books. It is a book for coaches. The basics are the most important part of wrestling, not any special tricks or throws. The edge over other teams is found in the little extras a coach can do to make sure his wrestlers are motivated to learn and to win. This book is exactly what I was looking for. I purchased this book just after the 1998-99 season, my fourth as a head high school coach. My credentials include winning Conference Titles in each of those years, coaching the first Team State qualifier from the conference in '98 and '99 and earning various state coaching awards. I am pleased I have done some of the things Gable suggests, but I believe this book can make things even better next season. Also, I haven't ever been any kind of Dan Gable die-hard, although now I understand why people are.
A must have for any serious wrestling coach!.......1999-01-25
Certainly not all coaches will agree with all of Gable's philosophies and methods. However there is so much quality insight into this legendary winner's approach that it can only make the reader improve. Take from the book what you like, ignore the rest. Every aspect of wrestling is covered, by the most successful American wrestler/coach EVER!

Not so bad. .......2005-01-19
I have read both books in the series, how they are suppose to go. And yes, Dominic was not a good guy in the first book, but was not all that bad. Not as bad as some villans. He sparked interest in what would happen to him and his book jumps up 13 years. So, he is not the same. He is more of a ruthless character that has had the bad end of the stick for his whole life. You get a good background of Dom in The Runaway Princess and then in Someday My Prince, you get more of his story which is not a good one at all. Dom has led a hard life and did what he had to do to get by. Because of his life, it makes him an ok hero. He had to learn the hard way, but instead of being a really bad apple, he tried to keep whatever honest qualities that he could and still live his hard life. That is why he gets so hung up on giving his word. When that is all you have it has to mean something. I liked that he had a depth to his feelings that was like a hidden well. He was not the average hero, but neither was his pain. He could have been worse then he was and done worse. He stillhad some morals. I liked it, gave it five stars and would reccomend it as well.

Her father, King Jerome, has invited potential suitors from far and wide, hoping someone will capture his daughter's attention. He wants nothing more than love and happiness for her. Laurentia has found no one the least bit interesting, until she meets Prince Dominic.
Prince Domonic is the illegitimate brother of the king of neighboring Sereminia. Not only that, but he's a mercenary, and the black sheep of the family. Due to recent threats to the throne, Laurentia's father hires Dominic to protect his daughter from harm. But who will protect Laurentia from the undeniable desire Dominic elicits from her, despite her efforts to escape it? And will he prove to be the one love she has been searching for, or will his debt of honor end in betrayal of the beautiful princess?
This is the sequel to THE RUNAWAY PRINCESS which I've yet to read. While this was an enjoyable story, it wasn't one of my favorites by Ms. Dodd. Mostly due to the hero being rather harsh and brooding, with a hidden agenda of betrayal. From what I understand, Dominic was introduced in the first book, and he was far from nice in it. Laurentia is a likeable, intelligent, and strong willed heroine. There are moments of humor here and the love scenes are quite sensual. As for a recommendation, if you're a Dodd fan like me, I'd recommend reading this one. However, if you've never read anything by this author, I'd recommend beginning with the Governess Bride Series, or THAT SCANDALOUS EVENING, rather than this selection.
Not the Best Hero....but...........2003-08-16
This book was about average for Dodd. This is only the second book from her that I have not enjoyed the hero. It would be helpful to you to read "Runaway Princess" before reading this book. It explains the background of Dominic a little better than this novel.
Princess Laurentia is looking for a husband so that she can continue her royal line. Dominic declares himself first her suitor, and then her bodyguard after a blotched kidnapping attempt. This book centers around the time of Laurentia's birthday, with most of the story moving within this time frame. Ultimately, Dominic is after a "secret" from Laurentia in order to gain financial wealth, but ends up falling in love with her in the process.
SOMEDAY MY PRINCE does not have a lot of charm. I did like the heroine, Princess Laurentia. She came across in a much more pleasant manner than the hero. However, it was hard to believe that Laurentia would forgive Dominic so easier for his betrayal. Ultimately, this book is worth the read, but don't be surprised if you are a longtime Dodd fan, and are slightly disappointed.

so I got this book and you know what its about from reading about
from reading above so i wont't go into that. If you have read the runnaway princess you know who dom is. I am sorry but after what he did in that book how was I supposed to like him. Frankly I didn't start to like him here after what he does. It was a good read but not one of her best. I like this writer, and some parts of the story I liked.

SOMEDAY MY PRINCE, a romance novel, is fantasy-filled and suited more to a reader in the teenage years. It's the story of Laurentia, a princess who knows the secret of her country's wealth, and Dom, a mercenary whose job it is to seduce her into telling him that secret. Neither is what the other expected. Yet they fall in love and live happily ever after. It's a very light read.

Fascinating book!.......2007-08-08
This book is overwhelming. Extremely well written. Random revelations for me: Karma provides the situation, but there is still free will. We can take action today to change our future. Reincarnation provides a way to defend God's justice while defending Old Testament law. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount: "The measure you give will be the measure you get." Jesus said we must come to terms with God while we are alive.
We must pay our karmic debts while we're living. Earth, not hell, is the place of punishment. Resurection occurs while we are alive; the spirit can work out its own salvation. If Jesus had a beginning, and became God's son, then others can also become God's sons. Jesus never said he was the ONLY son of God. How is man saved? By worshipping Jesus, or emulating him? Many Orthodox Christians believe Jesus is a way to escape punishment for sins, not a way to achieve union with God. Moses gradually became divine while on earth.
Jesus taught the kingdom is not a time or a place. Kingdom means the power to rule (inwardly). The path to God is different for each person. You don't have to be perfect to begin the process of divination. Faith, grace and works are a tripod -- each indespensible. Grace is God meeting us half way. He doesn't pick us up and carry us into eternity. Jesus' single sacrifice did not cancel our need to balance our bad karma, over this lifetime, many lifetimes. Paul said: "We need to work out our own salvation."
Orthodox Christianity inflated the power of grace to astronomical proportions. Gnostics saw grace as a boost, a leg up, rather than an elevator ride to the top of the mountain. Jesus rekindles the divine spark in our souls, and we're on our way! Amen!
Effective in a negative way........2007-04-19
This book was only effective in forcing me to seek out any other book on the subject. The history she went over I have no problem with. It is everything else that I find quite annoying. She seems to ignore alternatives to how she interperets scripture and what one person says about reincarnation, being born again, life before this current one, etc.
She also ignores concepts, themes, and issues that today may shed light on the subject. She doesn't address or let the readers know of any other authority on the subject, which to me, makes me that much more skeptical of her credibility and ability to write on the topic.
I feel that I am alone in this and that is fine, each book affects each person differently. I guess I was just looking for more, and the author(s) didn't deliver.
Fascinating and Spiritually Satisfying .......2006-05-05
I was assigned a research paper for my English class and we were permitted to pick whatever topic we wished. Reincarnation is something that has always fascinated me, and since I am a Christian who believes in reincarnation, I decided to write my paper on reincarnation in early Christianity, the Bible, and its revival in modern society. I needed 15 sources, but this book could stand on its own! Prophet discusses historical justification for reincarnation in Christianity as it relates to Jesus' teachings, the Bible, and the Roman Empire. It discusses the lost years of Jesus, and the possibility of him visiting India, and employing mysticism in his teachings. The practicality of reincarnation as she argues it left me spellbound. I was a believer to begin with, but after reading this, I am even more convinced that reincarnation belongs in Christian theology. Did you know there are approximately 28 MILLION Christians who believe in reincarnation? This is only one of the amazing things you will discover if you read this amazing book! Its food for the mind and it quenches the soul that believes there is more out there than our beloved Christianity is telling us! Trust me, it is amazing!
Okay, to all of the skeptics!.......2005-08-14
Well, this book has definitely valitated my belief in reincarnation. The Christianity bible(King David) is WAY to black and white for me. And the whole concept of reincarnation brings forth a better understanding of what the WHOLE meaning of life is. I claim to be a Christian since I strive to emulate Jesus christ. Christ's teachings and his whole persona has always had an impact on me, especially his shed of blood on the cross, I cry almost every Christmas just thinking about it! I still believe he was that "special" person, the son of God, or even God in flesh because of all of his special supernatural powers and gifts that he had. I also have a great open mind to the way other religions practice like Kabbalah and Buddism because mediation, in my opinion, is also a missing link in the "belief" system of christianity. I don't like the fact that they believe it's a form of letting evil spirits come in. So, I love Christ he will always be in my heart, but also accept the way other religions like to practice AND what they believe even though some don't believe he was "the son of GOd" and believe he was just a teacher. I also have great respect for the Buddah too.

I cannot really add anything to the other positive reviews without being repetitive. One point however, and no small point I believe, is that the book actually makes Jesus relevant to those who have either given up Christianity or, like me, never related to it at all. Christianity without reincarnation simply makes no sense - with it, the pieces fall into place, and Elizabeth Clare Prophet spells out how.

This is a good book for the beginning Rookwood collector. But for those more interested in the earlier, artist produced pieces, this book will be no help as it focuses more on the later mass production wares.
Scholarship adds to book value!.......2002-03-15
This book is an absolute must for the Rookwood collector. The most complete survey of Rookwood figurals and paperweights available in the book marketplace today. The book gives very accurate market value estimates for each item and ranks each item's rarity from "never seen" to "common". The authors, however, deserve great praise for the scholarship which allowed them to identify the Finisher's responsible for the "Finisher's marks" occasionally impressed into the bottom of some Rookwood pieces. Having potter's names associated with these marks insures additional valuation increases for many examples of Rookwood pottery both artist signed and production. A terrific book and a great addition to any collector's library!

This book is rich in accurate images of gems and minerals and has a scientific review of chemical composition, hardness and refractive properties. It is not, however, a guide for appraisal. I have seen a small booklet that determines the carats of gems based on the dimensions and shape of the particular stone. This information is what I had hope to get, but, unfortunately, did not.

The title of this book is a "false advertisement".
The Feng Shui sections, and the recipes for making one's own paints are far from practical.
The explanations and illustrations about what colors work well together are far from complete.

This is the book I had been looking for for many weeks... I found it very comprehensive. Being not too technical (there are other books on the how-to), it gave me great ideas on what techniques are possible and what the implications of a chosen color might be. i had never thought of mixing paint myself! i like the fact that it's has a separate section on each major color, and that it includes detailed thoughts on color therapy and feng shui. the swatches at the end are great to work with. the only negative comment i have to make is on the color mixes photos... most of the combinations don't look pleasant to my eye. overall, i truly recommend this book!
Not Very Complete After All.......2002-04-07
This book is mostly a collection of recipes for mixing your own colored paints. While they offer several recipes for each basic color, it is still an extremely limited color palette to work with. Worse, the blue section is extremely weak as most of the colors have a decidely purple tinge despite the fact that purple gets its own section. There are some nice colors in here, however, and people interested in making their own colors might do well to buy this book.
Perhaps most helpful to me were the brief discussions of each color and their best uses in the home. This includes a feng shui section for those who are interested in that.
Finally, the book also contains examples of which colors go well together which is a nice idea. At the same time, many of the example photos of these supposedly compatible combos are quite garish and ugly from my perspective (unlike some other color books that I've read recently) so its actual usefulness is limited at best.
In summary, this book is probably best for those who want to mix their own paint and perhaps want to learn about the feng shui characteristics of individual colors. Neither topic is explored exhaustively, however, and prospective buyers might do well to look for more comprehensive guides on these topics.

This book is a great reference for anyone interested in color, from beginners to experts alike. The book covers a wide variety of painting techniques, that are easily explained. Each color is explained and also the color is discussed in feng shui terms as wellas color therpy terms. A must for anyone who is interested in pursuing color a little further.

Good idea, poorly executed.......2006-08-23
This book should have been a useful and interesting resource, but its function is seriously undermined by the hideous visual design. Instead of presenting the designers' stationery on a neutral background so that it can be clearly seen and appreciated, the book's designer(s) fill the space around and behind the examples with bright colors and shapes, blown up logos, and other distracting clutter. No shadows, borders, or other delineating marks are used to distinguish the stationery from the background, making it difficult at times to even pick out what parts of the page are examples and what are just background "flourishes."
I recommend that instead of this book, people interested in designers' stationery and other self-promotional work look to design magazines like Step, Print, and Communication Arts for their annual reviews of the best in this and other design areas.
A different perspective to books on stationery........2002-08-13
As a designer that purchases more design books than what he needs (or has time to read), it is suffice to say that I have purchased many books on letterheads, business cards, etc. In these books, you see how design companies created letterheads and business cards for their clients.
And there are good books out there but have you ever wondered what the letterheads and business cards for design agencies/firms look like?
What "Designers' Stationery: How designers and design companies present themselves to the world" does is just that.
When I first saw this book, I just had to purchase it because there is nothing like it out in the market. Every book is again about the designer's clients and this book shows you the innovative letterheads, envelopes and business cards created by these companies.
I would have given this a five star rating but one thing that I didn't see that is important to me when buying books on stationary is the paper stock these design companies used to print their stationery on. Sure, it's nice to see special features listed but for most books on stationery, it's useful and nice to know the paperstock used.
If you don't mind spending [money] to checking out how international design companies putting some flare into their stationery, check this book out. You really see some innovative ways they are able to attract attention. It might even make you want to redo your own stationery. Check it out!

Dedicated collectors of Crumb will appreciate this book for what it is - a genuine tribute to hope and youthful enthusiasm through the eyes of 'the first punk' (see "Confessions of..").
"Your Vigor for Life Appalls Me" adds a deeper layer of insight into Crumb's fascinating family life and his discovery in the 1950's of a world outside his closed Catholic existence. And fittingly, between the lines of Crumb's writing, so to are the rich lives of Marty Pahls, Mike Britt and Charles-Maxon-Sandra-Carol-Beatrice-Charles Snr Crumb. All people whose lives were one way or another turned inside-out by the works of Harvey Kurtzman, Charles Barks, and ultimatetly - one Robert "voice of countercultureMrSixtiessexpervertlovechildidealistonceinagenerationGENIUS" CRUMB.
I'm 27 and find Robert Crumb's comics to be the work a 'classic' modern artist. Yes I've suffered the appalled looks and barbs of many a dissident, but I maintain that even when his work is grotesque and repellent you can't help but be fascinated by this man's focus and tenacity. OK, does anyone not know that Crumb loves voluptuos, fleshy women and doesn't mind getting kinky with 'em? I mean is that pretty much absolutely VERY OBVIOUS BY NOW FOLKS?? AND that he had the kind of troubled childhood that is vividly echoed in this (very endearing!) book of letters?
This is a chidhood/teenagehood that I think people of our time would be able to relate to.. particularly those who are creatively inclined or at an early age blankly questioned subjects such as religion, philosophy, art, 'fandom', what makes things 'good' or meaningful, family, the unknown.. Here we see Crumb asking these questions that at some stage in an artists life, just have to be asked. To paraphrase - "Could pretty much all of what I've been told is good and true be made up of lies? Would they actually do that just to make a buck?"
This book establishes that even in his early teens, Robert Crumb was an individual with talent, passion and an incredible focus. And the letters are hardly 'tedious'.. Knowing full-well what Crumb would become is half the joy of reading this book, which if you've read this far you know you must purhcase. ESSENTIAL for the Crumb collector.
Probably for completists , mostly..........2002-07-11
This collection of letters focuses primarily on R. Crumb's life from age 16 to about age 21. It's particularly useful in its presentation of how the budding artist formulated his views while he was still in such an impressionable stage of life. All 50 of the letters printed in this volume are addressed to one or the other of his youthful friends (Mike Britt and Marty Pahls), with whom he shared the primary interests of comic-book collecting (fandom) and collecting records from the 1920s. A lot of the content of these letters consists of lists of comics and records with the accompanying minutiae relating to them. While this makes for tedious reading at times, it demonstrates the obsessive passion Crumb had for the worlds of these particular collectibles. Sprinkled among the letters are incompletely formed philosophical tracts about isolation, religion, the commercialism of American society, and personal relations. It also includes some examples of early artwork which Crumb included within his letters to his friends. While this collection does not present Crumb's evolution past his early-20s, it does give the reader a sense of an idealistic, youthful, and sometimes sweet R. Crumb that his fans are unlikely to find elsewhere. So while I would recommend this to Crumb completists, I would suggest that those less knowledgable about the artist start with Zwigoff's documentary, "Crumb", or "The R.Crumb Coffee Table Art Book".
Glimpses into the psyche of a comix genius.......1998-10-06
It is easy to deconstruct the graphic ouvre of R. Crumb. This does not mean that understanding his creative mind is an easy task. This collection of his letters from the early years of his career gives the reader a glimpse into the passions and motivations of America's formost cultural iconoclast.
This book is not for the Politically Correct crowd, which is a blessing. Crumb is not only honest in his creative work, but in describing his attitudes about American popular culture--the more obscure the expression, the more he appreciates it.
A must-have for any scholar of pop culture.
