Book Description

The central volume in Ivan Doig's acclaimed Montana trilogy, Dancing at the Rascal Fair is an authentic saga of the American experience at the turn of this century and a passionate, portrayal of the immigrants who dared to try new lives in the imposing Rocky Mountains.

Ivan Doig's supple tale of landseekers unfolds into a fateful contest of the heart between Anna Ramsay and Angus McCaskill, walled apart by their obligations as they and their stormy kith and kin vie to tame the brutal, beautiful Two Medicine country.

5 out of 5 stars Life of homesteaders in wilderness of Northern Montana.......2007-04-11

Very well written book. Gave the reader a feel for the hardships, joys, and life of an immigrant. Beautifully describes the Montana scenery.
Book easily held the interest of the reader. In fact I had a hard time putting the book down. I would highly recommend this book to any age person who has a nominal interest in the life of our forefathers. Reading it, I could just feel the excitement and the beauty as well as the pain of life in the 1890's.

5 out of 5 stars Totally satisfying!.......2007-04-02

One reader compared Doig to Larry McMurtry...hmmm, maybe, but I think not. Dancing at the Rascal Fair is my first Doig novel, but not my last. I will be reading his other work, for sure. D at the RF is so well written, I am bonded to these fictional characters as if they were real. Am thinking of them, long after I've finished the last page. If you enjoy reading about land, early settlers, hardships and love - you'll enjoy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Love Doig's writing!.......2007-01-19

I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy! It brought me back to the places I was familiar with when I lived in Montana.

5 out of 5 stars This is the first Doig book I read. Wonderful.......2006-10-29

What a beautiful book, yet tragic. As usual the writing is simply wonderful. If you love literature, this is a must. The story chronicles the migration of a couple of Scottish families to Montana and the trials and tribulations that they experience. The book is masterful. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2006-10-24

a fantastic family saga of life on the montana prairie back in the day. everything one could want in a historical novel: realistic, interesting characters, a strong sense of narrative, and a grand presentation of a place in time. this is the 1st book i have read by this author, i now greatly anticipate reading more of his work. my highest recommendations.

Return to Texas in Joan Johnston's beloved Hawk's Way series.

Tate Whitelaw has had enough of her older brothers' constant interference in her life. So she decides to split from the ranch she's called home for all of her twenty-three years. Tate does what any young, red-blooded American girl would do -- she runs straight into the arms of hardened rancher Adam Phillips.

Adam's is no mood to rescue a damsel in distress, but his heart has other ideas. Tate has no clue that her estranged brother, Jesse is as close as the neighboring spread . . . and Adam has no intention of telling her. He didn't go looking for Tate, but he can't imagine letting her go now. But when she meets Jesse's wife and discovers Jesse is the ranch hand next door, Adam has some explaining ahead of him.

Add to that the three Whitelaw boys, who show up with shotguns in tow to make sure their sister's an honest woman, and there's really nothing left to say except "I do."

4 out of 5 stars delightful western romance .......2005-09-28

Twenty-three years old Tate Whitelaw is tired of the over-protection of her three older brothers, who make it impossible for her to have any fun. Deciding she needs to escape, she leaves Hawk's Way only to land in the arms of another alpha male, Adam Philips, who lost his beloved when she fell in love and married Tate's brother Jesse (see HONEY AND THE HIRED HAND). Tate likes having Adam overly protect her, especially his hugs and kisses, unlike her siblings who just seem in the way.

Adam wonders if he is fickle because he loved Honey forever, but finds himself needing Tate even more. He knows that she is ignorant that Jesse is living nearby and realizes he owes her the truth, but fears she will leave him if only to see Jesse.

When Tate meets Honey she invites her and her spouse to come to dinner at Adam's spread. Instead an irate Jesse arrives demanding she leaves, as he is positive his former rival is using his sister as a means of getting even. Tate believes her host loves her, but Jesse refuses to back down.

This reprint of a delightful western romance will please readers due to the antics of Tate's brothers who return with a shotgun and a priest. The lead couple is a fine romantic duo although Adam has problems believing he could be so shallow as to fall in love so fast after losing the courtship of Honey that even he thinks he is on the rebound. Though it would be better to first read HONEY AND THE HIRED HAND to better understand the motives of Adam and Jesse, sub-genre fans will enjoy the return to Hawk's way.

I remember reading this entire series back in the day. Although some were not as good as others, they were still very much enjoyable.

Now I'm excitied to read the all-new novel in this series - The Musashi Flex!

                    Good stuff this.

A good one man against the galaxy book, but it never becomes unbelievable unlike a lot of other in the genre. If anything it gets more believable as it goes. It's partly Frank Russell's Wasp where one man can create a larger effect than you might think and part John Brunner's Shockwave Rider where a man is searching for a fulcrum on which to move the world. Both parts are told in separate threads and meet up nicely at the end.

                    Fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Top Ten in Sci-Fi From the 80's!!.......2004-04-11

The Man Who Never Missed is, hands down, one of the finest, entertaining and most original Science Fiction novels to come out of the Eighties. The plot is both action, military and spiritual all in one as the unique journey of the Hero unfolds and we bear witness to his growth and development from a shattered, spiritualy stricken soldier to a freedom fighter capable of challenging an empire. This story remains a benchmark for all military or martial fiction in the Science fiction genre. This is the first of 3 novels in the Matador Trilogy, The Man Who Never Missed is followed by Matadora and The Machiavelli Interface. Collect them. Read them. Enjoy them and may the Spirit of Adventure never leave you.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure.......2003-09-19

The Man Who Never Missed is an exciting and engrossing space adventure about a soldier who has an epiphany one day during battle, and as a result decides to take on an empire. He encounters various characters along the way who teach him valuable lessons, both physical and spiritual, preparing him for the day when he will take his fight to the forces of tyranny in the known galaxy.

This is a great novel for what it is - a mythic tale of a hero, how he was formed, and the beginnings of his battle against an unassailable (and of course evil) foe. If you're looking for characters who are "ordinary mortals" or for some philosophy deeper than "good must triumph over evil", you won't find it here. But the thoroughly enjoyable tale that Perry weaves made me look past these points.

Sure, TMWNM isn't a great piece of literature, but it's a helluva fun story. And in the end, don't you want to be entertained as much as enlightened?

5 out of 5 stars A Wasp in Their Ear.......2003-02-07

The Man Who Never Missed is the first novel written in the Matador series. However, it is the second novel in the series by internal chronological sequence, following The 97th Step.

In this novel, Emile Antoon Khadaji is an former Confed veteran with six years combat experience when he finds himself in a bloodbath on Maro, where three-quarters of a million religious fanatic ran, walked and crept into the Confed fire zones and died. This traumatic event breaks his social conditioning and gives him an epiphany about violence. He runs into the oncoming mob, discarding his equipment as he goes, and later finds himself in a nearby town, where he meets Pen (see The 97th Step).

He realizes that the amount of violence used by the Confed is wrong and looks for a way to eliminate the strong-arm tactics. Pen teaches him how to control himself and Juete teaches him to see others as they are. On Bocca, he learns the nature of politics and military force as well as many other subjects. He wallows in learning for a while, but then moves on to gaining money as a power base.

On Greaves, he buys a bar and specializes in providing a good time to the troops. At night and in his spare time, he shoots select troopers with darts carrying Spasm, a convulsant that leaves the victims totally incapable of speech and movement for six months, but leaves the mind clear and undamaged. During these six months, he shoots 2388 of the 10,000 Confed troops, including the commanding officer.

When the Confed finally catches up to him, he is on record as being the one and only member of the Shamba Freedom Forces. This spooks the System Marshall and every single trooper that learns the tale. His fame and example spreads throughout the Confed.

This novel is a SF psyops story, focusing on the use of minimum force to achieve political objectives. Underlying this is a martial arts philosophy which teaches much the same lesson. When a political system degenerates into a self-perpetuating organization that preys on its own citizens, it only takes a small event to crystallize opposition to its existence. Witness the fall of the Soviet Union from the inside.

This story is much like Eric Frank Russell's Wasp, but with a more military approach and a different objective. In Wasp, the goal was to reduce the will to resist of the planetary population, but in this novel, the goal is to increase the will to resist of the planetary populations by breaking the reputation of Confed forces.

Recommended for all Perry fans and anyone who enjoys psyops stories in a SF setting.

5 out of 5 stars "I chose this as one of the 3 best when I had to teach Revelation!".......2005-12-11

When I was asked to teach Revelation, I was given the choice of any commentaries I wanted to study in preparation. I knew my audience would include teens, mature adults, and new believers. After much research, I decided on 3--each, the best at it's particular audience.

For young people (teens) and new believers, I used "Dragons, Grasshoppers, & Frogs!". It gave me the practical, reflective questions to include in daily life. I especially liked the Love Letter from Jesus based on the hidden messages from Christ in the book.

For my mature audiences, I used a serious work entitled "Revelation" by John MacArthur. This gave me technical background.

But for general excellence, this book was everything I could have hoped for! Mr. Duck writes in a simple, humerus manner. He never loses touch with either the reader or the bible-centered interpretation of Revelation. He also includes some reflective questions (though not nearly as good as 'Dragons'), and provided the best bibliography of them all.

I would highly recommend this book unless you deny the premillennial, pretribulational viewpoint.

THis is the greatest guide for Revelations. I strongly suggest anyone who is studying to use this guide

This isn't Mark's best work but it comes close. The read was a bit choppy but still it's one of the better outlines.

5 out of 5 stars Biblically Inept is by far the best study books written.......2003-01-14

The Biblically Inept books are a fine complement to your bible. I am so impressed with the Revelation and Life of Christ Biblically-Inept books that I intend to collect all of the Biblically-Inept books. I was so shaken about the Revelation book in the past it was one of my most hated books in the bible. When I got the Revelation Biblically-Inept book it had really open my eyes to things and that there was nothing scary or mind boggling about Revelation. After I got through reading the Revelation Biblically Inept book. I feel even more content, joyful about gods plan, and completely understand the book of revelation where it doesn't scare the day lights out of me, instead I rejoice in gods plans. Biblically-Inept are wonderful complementary study guides to your bible.

5 out of 5 stars "Makes Revelation not only easy--but actually fun to study!".......2002-07-06

***This review would include the DANIEL work by the same author**

Revelation is, without a doubt, one of my sixty-six favorite Bible books to study! I've probably studied (and taught) this book more than any other, and there are very few Revelation commentaries I haven't used. This commentary though, is unique.

The author is dispensational, millennial, and pre-tribulational in his approach. Let's get that straight right now! If you're not, you might not fully 'appreciate' this work.

He cites many of finest authors on Revelation, and does not consider his work alone as the final authority. But unlike other commentaries, Duck includes a broad array of contemporary 'radio' type personalities such as J. Vernon McGee, Noah Hutchings, Jack Van Impe, and even a few Pentecostal experts as well.

This book is the easiest to read of any Revelation book I've ever studied, and includes very helpful references to the Old Testament. This author understands that the key to Revelation is in the Old Testament, and NOT in wild, personal speculation! Kudos, to you Dr. Duck!

If there is a weakness in this series, it might be the 'handwritten' timelines in the Appendix. They seem just a tad inferior in quality to the finely formated balance of the rest of the book.

One can get a wonderful and adequate grasp of Revelation using this book alone. However, the real meat of study here is in finding which of the many authors cited appeal to you most, and then checking out their full work on Revelation. This book serves up a sampling of the best in the field. Best of all, it seems to be readily available, and inexpensive 'used' on the Internet.

Revelation was written to be studied, as it tells us in its opening verses. Yet, Revelation comes last in Scripture; God assumes we've grasped the fist sixty-five books FIRST!

Dr. Duck's guide for the 'inept' will provide a great deal of help for those who only know Psalms, a few Proverbs, and '...the words of Jesus in red'! If you're not new to Revelation, this book is somewhat limited, but not a waste. Something always seems to pop up that you really hadn't thought of!

I look forward to the rest in this series. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This is a great book for young teenagers! While I liked the more 'handbook' style of Jerry Parks's "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!", this book is more a verse by verse. Kudos to the author!

Finally, there is pertinent information on the range of services provided by auction houses from establishing market value and insurance to charity sales and benefits. Whether you want to buy a chateau in France, a Winslow Homer in New York, or an antique apple peeler in Vermont, this book is for you.

This book addresses rooms with various challenges and offers solutions. Filled with great ideas and DIY projects. Great "before and after" book.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite decorating book.......2005-09-10

I am building a new home and have collected many magazines and books on decorating. This book is great at showing how to lay out furniture in various rooms and shows many options. It has before and after photos with explanations that are very helpful. I keep returning to this book as it is easy to work with and shows how to arrange and decorate with many things I already own. Great Book!!

                                    5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Results!.......2004-05-04

I have read a ton of interior design books, and for the most part, I kept thinking I would learn through osmosis, by looking at the beautiful pictures and hoping for inspiration. Unfortunately, my home did not reflect my love of interior design, which for me, is the ultimate test of effectiveness.
This book takes Lauri Ward's "Use What You Have Decorating" book, which had some good ideas, and goes much further in showing you in each photo how you can arrange your furniture and accessories into a beautiful home. It tells you the basic rules, how to balance items visually, and why these tips work. Since I bought the book, I've been moving my furniture and rearranging my tabletops and I am amazed at how beautiful the results are. I'm ready to toss all of my old decorating books, and just leave this book on my shelf. I am surprised at how well this book has worked for me.

5 out of 5 stars Before and After Pics!.......2004-04-24

I really love this book because of the clear before and after pictures. They take a room and rearrange it using the existing furniture and describe what was done. It is amazing what placement can do. You really get a sense of why certain rooms work and you take away furniture/object placement techniques to improve any room. If you are into furniture layout, you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars A book to help you give your rooms that complete look.......2003-12-27

This isn't a book for people who are starting from scratch with absolutely nothing. This is a book to improve the look of what you already have by just adding a few simple accessories. The examples they use are rooms that need the the finishing touches and the book gives you the explanation to complete the room.
For me it is always easy to start the room but not complete the overall look.
This book is a very useful source to complete your look.
I finally found the book to help me in this area.

"Mirror of Empire" is the catalogue accompanying an exhibition, sponsored by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, traveling to Minneapolis, Toledo (Ohio) and Los Angeles in 1990 and 1991. It is the first survey in English of Dutch marine art of the 17th century and includes many of the works of Willem Van de Velde the Elder and Willem Van de Velde the Younger. The catalogue focuses on paintings, drawings, prints, sea charts and related cartographical material while stressing the relationship among marine art and Dutch history, commerce and the tremendous significance of Dutch ship design. The book provides biographies of Dutch marine artists and contributors' essays on related topics that help explain the works of art within a larger historical context. These topics include the Dutch trade routes that assured the Dutch Republic its preeminent position in 17th-century Europe, the design and function of Dutch ships, the iconography of Dutch marine paintings as found in Dutch genre pictures of the period, and the importance of Dutch cartography to Western civilization.

The Dutch of the seventeenth century were the first Europeans to specialize in marine art, and the achievements of the celebrated Dutch masters attest to the vitality and enduring appeal of Dutch marine art. Mirror of Empire is a catalogue that accompanies a traveling exhibition sponsored by The Minneapolis Institute of Arts. It is the first survey in English of Dutch marine art of the seventeenth century and includes many of the works of both Willem Van de Velde the Elder and Willem Van de Velde the Younger. The catalogue focuses on paintings, drawings, prints, sea charts and related cartographical material, while stressing the relationships among marine art and Dutch history, commerce and the tremendous significance of Dutch ship design. Mirror of Empire provides biographies of Dutch marine artists and contributors' essays on related topics that help explain the works of art within the larger historical context of their time period. These topics include the Dutch trade routes that assured the Dutch Republic its preeminent position in seventeenth century Europe, the design and function of Dutch ships, the iconography of Dutch marine paintings as found in Dutch genre pictures of the period, and the importance of Dutch cartography to Western civilization. The "Mirror of Empire" exhibition will open at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts on September 23 and run through December 31, 1990. It will then travel to The Toledo Museum of Art from January 27-April 21, 1991 and to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from May 23-August 11, 1991. George Keyes is Curator at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He is the author of three books on individual seventeenth century Dutch artists.

                                          Book Description

Few motion pictures have enjoyed a renaissance like the 1946 Frank Capra masterpiece IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. Nominated for five Academy Awards, it was dismissed as syrupy Christmas fare and fell into obscurity until television gave it new life. Today it is an American tradition.

With IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A MEMORY BOOK, any fan of the classic film can further appreciate its magic and legacy. The warm reminiscences of the film's cast are supported by excellent photographs, providing the perfect companion for any fan of the film—or anyone who believes in miracles and angels.

The book features dozens of interviews and rare behind-the-scenes photographs that allow readers to see how the movie was created. Comments from Frank Capra, Jimmy Stewart, Bobbie Anderson, Jimmy Hawkins, Karen Grimes, and many more make the story behind the movie come alive.

More than a dozen brief biographies of the prominent cast members detail how IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE affected their lives and careers. "Then" and "now" photographs supplement the career highlights of Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Beulah Bondi, Gloria Grahame, Frank Faylen, Ward Bond, and others.

Like George Bailey himself, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE was rescued from oblivion in the 1970s when it was discovered that the film's copyright had not been renewed and the motion picture had fallen into public dominion, and television stations nationwide began freely airing the film. From film remakes and marvelous merchandise to cast reunions and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE'S hilarious parody, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A MEMORY BOOK explores the adoration of generations of viewers who have fallen under the movie's spell.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Christmas Gift!.......2006-11-29

If you love "It's a Wonderful Life" (and who doesn't?), then you'll LOVE this book! I was stunned to learn about what happened to the cast and where the Bailey kids are today and what they look like in more recent years. No other book offers the pure nostalgia factor like this one. The author gives us some amazing details about deleted scenes, as well as photographs that have surfaced showing these rare behind-the-scenes glimpses into scenes that never made the final cut. I loved the photo of Henry Travers (Clarence the Angel) in full color, not long before he died. What a treat this book is!! And the special message from Jimmy Stewart at the beginning of the book is pure magic! If you are a fan of this film, you won't be disappointed! This book is the perfect gift for any friends who love the movie, too. I've already ordered several and am giving them out this holiday!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful but not exceptional.......2006-02-23

There are plenty of surprises in this book. You'll read what director Frank Capra and the players themselves have to say about making "It's a Wonderful Life," and you'll discover some interesting names among those who were almost cast. You'll also learn that some of the film's legends are true, while others are not. For example, while it is true that Carl Switzer (Alfalfa from the "Our Gang" comedies) was the rascal who opened the gym floor exposing the swimming pool beneath, it is NOT true that muppets Bert and Ernie were named as an homage to Bert the cop and Ernie the cab driver -- that's just a coincidence. In spite of the book's rather crowded layout and lackluster production, if you love "It's a Wonderful Life" and/or if you collect IAWL memorabilia, you'll want to have this book.

Cox's "It's a Wonderful Life: A Memory Book" is an excellent addition to the movie buff's collection, and to fans of this exceptional film. The book is packed with stunning photographs (many never seen before), interesting tid-bits about the making-of, backstory on not only the fine performances of James Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore, but the character actors that helped make Capra's touching film so memorable and the holiday favorite it has become--almost 60 years later. It is well-researched and richly-written. This is a perfect gift year-round for any reason. It is one of Cox's best!

I have to admit that I wasn't much of an "It's a Wonderful Life" fan....until now. I had the pleasure of meeting Karolyn Grimes (little ZuZu Bailey) recently. She is such a warm and lovely person and spoke of IAWL with such passion that I bought the DVD the next night and watched it with new eyes. Now I'm hooked.

I was so delighted to find this book, to learn even more about this classic movie. After reading the book, I had to watch the DVD again.

Even if you're just a casual viewer of the movie, you'll still love this book. It's incredibly well-researched and jam-packed with beautiful photographs. Stephen Cox has a way with words. You feel like you're sitting with an old friend. His books are like comfort-food for the mind!

I totally loved this book!- I finished it in one sitting- I was facinated with all of the little tidbits that I wasnt aware of: H.B. Warner being sauced when he filmed the loss of his son scene- I was especially impressed with the very rare colored photos in the mid section of the book. I have read almost every one of this author's books but this one is a special holiday treat!

If you are looking for an objective analysis of Jimmy Stewart's life and career, this is not the book to buy and read. Jonathan Coe, a journalist who writes for the Guardian and London Review of Books, seems not to know what it means to be a conservative. Throughout this book, Coe refers to the inconsistencies in Stewart's life because of the actor's politics, conservative, were in conflict with the different rolls he played on the screen. For example, in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Coe thought it odd that Stewart played a part that championed the little guy (fighting for a boy scout camp against the developer) and not take the side of the developer, which Coe believed Stewart's conservative politics would mandate. Coe also claimed that Stewart must have had a difficult time playing the part of a pacifist in Shenandoah, which again did not mesh very well Stewart's politics. In all, Coe paints a less than attractive portrait of Jimmy Stewart and one has to ask, " Why did the author spend time researching and writing this biography?" It is also clear that Coe has little understanding of what it means to be a political conservative in the United States.

This biography was short on detail and long on Mr. Sanello's supercilious and trite commentary. Mr. Stewart truly did live a wonderful life; let's hope that someday someone writes a worthy biography.

I read the book quickly and felt it was also written quickly (especially near the end). I enjoyed learning more about the wonderous Mr. Jimmy Stewart, but was disappointed in the essence of this book. I'm sure I have aided in more wealth for the author, but perhaps by writing about Mr. Stewart he has learned about the core of a true gentleman. The typos were numerous...bad writing and bad editing. But, I did receive tremendous pleasure in reading the remarks by Judy Stewart Harcourt. Her father must be proud.

This book was the pits!! Sanello was in such a rush to cash in on Mr. Stewart's death, that he did not even bother to proof-read the text. The story jumps from year to year, story to story in no reasonable order. His unsubstantiated views and opinions were intermingled between news clippings, and "reported" conversations. And to top it off, the same misguided passages are repeated throughout! My only regret: that I finished the book. But, unfortuantely, there were no books left on the shelf, and I am too big a fan of James Stewart. Next time I will know to stay away from an "instant book." Mr. Stewart would be rolling in his grave if he knew of this trash bearing his name.

1 out of 5 stars There is only one pleasure in this book.......1997-08-28

This book was published just a few months after Jimmy Stewart's death. It seems to have been researched and written in a manner of weeks - so quickly that they didn't even catch all of the typos - and that quick work resulted in a badly written book. Jarring references to popular icons such as Kate Moss, Sylvester Stallone, and Aaron Spelling run throughout the book and detract from the reading experience. Sanello seems to be attempting to draw in a younger audience by using such references, but he merely suceeded in annoying me. Written like a freshman's first English essay, with slightly less attention paid to form, the only reason I would recommend this book is for the brief glimpse, although badly presented, it gives of a great man's life
