Wonderful German short stories.......2004-11-10
I received this book from Amazon last week and the stories are just plain wonderful. The literal translations are also very good, i.e., they are not literary translations, which means that for those who know german like myself the german text can be followed very easily ! In this book I "discovered" a few authors that I'd heard of but not read ( z.b., Gerd Gaiser with the story "Antigone und der Gartenzwerg" ). I strongly recommend this book for all people who seriously want to study german in an intermediate level. I also recommend volume 2.
Book Description
All her life Melody Evans has wanted to marry a plain, average man who didn't take risks. But when the foreign embassy where she works as an aide is taken over by terrorists and she's rescued by a daring navy SEAL, Melody blames the extreme circumstances for their ensuing passion. When it comes to ordinary, Harlan "Cowboy" Jones is anything but, and their encounter leaves Melody with a little more than just memories . . .
Seven months later when Cowboy pays Melody a visit, he's surprised to find her pregnant -- with his child. Now all he has to do is convince her that they are meant to be together. That he can be as ordinary as the next guy. The only problem is, once a hero, always a hero . . .

Actually... below average.......2006-11-21
Melody Evans is trapped with two fellow Americans at an embassy in an unnamed middle eastern country after a terrorist coup. Navy SEALS are sent in to rescue them, and she is taken into custody by charismatic Harlan "Cowboy" Jones. After a tense two days trying to reach the border to safety, the two hook up in her hotel room and spend the next six days in bed. When she returns to the US, she soon discovers she has a party favor from her rescuer, but decides not to tell him because she doesn't want to tie him down. Besides, she's looking for an average Joe, who has a safe and boring job like an accountant.
When Jones gets reassigned to the east coast, the first thing he does is contact Melody at her home near Boston. She brushes him off citing that they just had a fling. Not one to take no for an answer, Jones rushes up to Boston and is shocked to discover that she is bursting with child. She insists that she doesn't want him to feel obligated to have a role in the child's life, but he's insistent that the kid get a name.
Brockmann's fourth Tall, Dark & Dangerous SEAL story is kind of a let down after the first three that were so interesting. Let the blame fall on a couple lacking chemistry. As a reader, I never got a sense that either was anything more than a bed partner (and we get cheated out of those scenes). Considering the rest of the SEAL 10 squad, this one is below average. About the only part of the storyline I found interesting is the relationship between Mel's sister Brittany and the juveline delinquent she adopts. Their story is further fleshed out in "Night Watch," which picks up about 5 years later.
Not bad, but not good.......2004-12-11
This novel reminded me of something Coleridge said about some minor point, that is astonishing how little ability is necessary to be commercially successful.
I read this book twice, one time after the other. I had never read this sort of book before and had little expectation. I had read "Payton Place" which I enjoyed, and I tried to read Victoria Holt, but could not endure it. The plot could hardly be simpler: Girl is rescued by dynamic hero; they make love (described with restrained detail); she gets pregnant; she has a baby; hero finds out; hero offers to marry girl; she wants a husband for real affection, not obligation; he convinces her; they marry.
The writing is clear, there is no hint of pretense, but nor is there any genius. I also read another book of the "seal" series by this author, but it seemed the same story again with the details different, but the sex scenes almost identical.
"Wuthering Heights" it ain't. But it OK for a highly transient book
Who says everyone drops things for a man in uniform :).......2004-07-14
All her life Melody Evans has wanted to marry a plain, average man who didn't take risks. But when the foreign embassy where she works (her first real adventure) as an aide is taken over by terrorists and she's rescued by a daring navy SEAL, Melody blames the extreme circumstances for their ensuing passion. But, Harlan "Cowboy" not ordinary and their encounter leaves Melody with a little more than just memories. But, she thinks it will cramp his style and doesn't even tell him he is to be a father.
Seven months later when Cowboy pays Melody a visit (he can't get her out of his mind, or appears heart), he's surprised to find her pregnant, and with his child too boot. Now all he has to do is convince her that they are meant to be married but, to do that he will have to show he can be as ordinary as the next guy. Things seem to be going well until they walk in to the middle of a hold up and his instincts take over. The book focuses on how Harlan goes about trying to make her see they are supposed to be together.
This was a bit of a different Seal Team book for Brockmann, this one spent most of it's time in a quiet suburbia neighborhood. I thought it was a nice change of location and thoroughly enjoyed to book!
Poor pitiful Melody.......2004-07-14
Melody will really get on your nerves!! This was why I pretty much gave it an average review. Her whining and feeling sorry for herself went overboard. Even that. You don't feel any connection between the two. At least I didn't. It's just not there. (...)
Funny, sweet and fast.......2004-07-09
This is a great book for the summer...it is a quick read but has amazing characters. The book also keeps you on your toes!

With room for the reader's personal reflections at the end of the book, every page is a poignant gift of hope and healing. "Our stories are all different, but our pain is the same," writes Linda. "We are mothers who will forever grieve the loss of our children. And yet, there is hope for our troubled souls."

This helps.......2007-07-13
I lost my son earlier this year and bought this book to give me some idea of what heaven must be like from a childrens view. When I am low or sad I read this and it makes it just a little bit easier, reading that he is in a magical place as described. It is beautifully done and a wonderfull tool to help you through the grieveing process.
Great book..........2007-07-09
I bought this book for myself after loosing our first baby, Cameron at the end of my first trimester, just 3 weeks ago today. And, I must say that I did indeed cry while reading it, but the simple words of this book have already started healing the deep wounds in my heart. The illustrations are beautiful, and I would recommend this to anyone who has lost an infant.
This book brought me Peace and Hope After my Miscarriage.......2007-05-15
Mommy Please Don't Cry
By Linda DeYmaz
Illustrations by Sabrina Smith
After giving three kids, and three great pregnancies, it was a shock to me when I showed up for a normal second trimester checkup only to discover that my baby might be dead.
I had no signs of miscarriage at all. No bleeding, no cramping. My OB only did the ultrasound to see if there might be twins (since I was getting up there in age.)
When he turned the screen away from my view, my heart sank. There was no heart beat.
What followed were two weeks of more tests and ultrasounds, and eventually a D & C. We had lost our precious baby.
That was probably one of the darkest times in my life, and it was difficult to get out of bed and tale care of my three children. I cried a lot, and I wasn't sure how to get past the pain.
Though there is no easy way to recover from a miscarriage, one book that brought me hope was Mommy Please Don't Cry by Linda DeYmaz.
This book is written from the perspective of the lost baby speaking to their mother about the beauty and glory of heaven. It was so comforting to read and cry over the pages of Mommy Please Don't Cry time and time again. It helped heal my heart.
If you have had a miscarriage, or know someone who has, this book is very healing. I strongly encourage you to get a copy, and share the love of Christ with them.
Several years later, I did suffer a second miscarriage, and now have 2 glory babies in heaven waiting on me. And I know that someday, I will hold them, and "our hearts will again beat as one."
Mommy, Please Don't Cry: There Are No Tears In Heaven".......2006-10-29
I have ordered and given away close to a dozen of these. It's an amazing book and touches the heart of a woman at the point she needs it.

Great for History Buffs and the Adventurous Cook.......2002-01-31
Karen Hess does a great job of introducing you to the person that was Mary Randolph. She helps us understand the background of cooking and cookbooks in America. For those who are interested in how cooking was handled in the earlydays of the states, or for those cooks who are always looking to try something different - this book has a lot to offer.
In the words of a native of Richmond, Virginia..........2001-02-28
The author, Mary Randolph, was a member of the aristocratic Virginian Randolph family, and was reputed to be the best cook in Richmond, Virginia in the early 19th century. This book is regarded by most culinary historians as the first true cookbook of the American South. Randolph provides an introduction to food and customs of old Virginia and includes recipes and serving instructions for a wide range of soups, beef, veal, lamb, mutton, pork, fish, poultry, sauces, vegetables, puddings, creams, preserves, cordials, plus pickling techniques and the making of soaps, cleansers, and perfumes. As such, the book is not only an excellent cookbook, but also an excellent almanac and reference for historians and writers of fiction concered with the ante-bellum South. The recipes herein can easily be translated into today's methods of preparation, with the use of healthy ingredients. As a native Richmonder, this book was a staple in our home when I was growing up, and I can attest to the tastiness of many of the recipes herein.

Excelant reference.......2007-06-28
This book is for lovers of these beautiful dogs or those interested in their beginnings. Very informative book, and lots of colored pictures to help with ones selection of a spaniel. I recommend as this be number 1 book of choice about these Staffordshire dogs.
STAFFORDSHIRE SPANIELS:SUBSTANTIAL TEXT & BEAUTIFUL ILLUST.......2001-11-30
This terrific book traces the history, manufacture, and various styles of the traditional Comforter Spaniel made in Staffordshire, England during the 19th century. It is a comprehensive study with substantial text and beautiful illustrations, and it is written in a style that keeps the reader turning pages. As a collector and dealer, I have found this book to be extremely useful - I can't keep enough copies in my store, and I keep it at the top of the stack on my coffee table at home. This is a perfect reference and a perfect gift for anyone who appreciates the primitive beauty of the well-known Staffordshire Spaniel. Be sure to check out its companion text, Staffordshire Animals, by the same author and publisher!
A Great Read with Lots of Info and Beautiful Illustrations.......2001-11-04
This book, the only one I know of that deals specifically with Staffordshire Spaniels, is an invaluable reference for collectors and dealers alike. It offers a wide range of over 285 superb full-color illustrations, descriptive captions, and suggested values that reflect various market and regional trends. The book is packed with important historical and production information. Sections on reproductions and tips for collectors round out this comprehensive and informative study. This is NOT just another Staffordshire picture book or boring catalog of image after image. This specialized book offers so much more. The author's writing style is reader-friendly and touched by the sense of fun that Staffordshire collecting is meant to be. Synonymous with Staffordshire figures, Spaniels are the quintessential Victorian decorative accessory -- no Victorian interior is complete without at least one pair, and no collector or dealer's library is complete without this book! Enjoy!
Book should not be used to determine value of pieces!.......1998-08-29
This book contains nice photographs. However, the prices of pieces are unrealistic. Some quotes seem extremely low and other extremely high. The author doesn't mention the condition of the piece when quoting prices The greatest factor the effects the price of pottery is the condition of the piece. A price should never be given without a discription of the condition of the piece. The book would be a nice reference for a novice collector. But price information should be ignored.

If envy is an issue with which you struggle daily, you may want to avoid Great Kitchens, a lavishly illustrated walk-through of 26 fabulous kitchens in the homes of some of America's best chefs. This is a Taunton Press publication--the same people who bring us Fine Woodworking, Fine Homebuilding, and Wooden Boat, among others--so rest assured the production values are high enough to raise the stakes for everyone else in the business.
The one thing all of these kitchens have in common is that they didn't start out this way. There are kitchens put into Victorian houses, 1920s farm houses, swim schools (no kidding: Mary Sue Milliken of Border Grill in Los Angeles, and her architect husband, Josh Schweitzer, bought a small swim school and put home and kitchen where locker rooms and showers could once be found), old bars, upscale apartments, ancient stone houses. These are kitchens, then, that have been thought about by people who work with food, and know what they want at home.
Built-in wood-burning ovens and hearths seem to be a big deal. So, too, are custom wok stoves. Seattle chef Tom Douglas put his enormous prep island on industrial casters. He also put his herbs and spices into cans that attach to bar magnets on what would be wasted wall space. He chose the domestic version of an industrial stove because it is better insulated and doesn't heat up the kitchen. And like several chefs in the book, he swears by his commercial Hobart dishwasher with its 90-second cycle.
Great Kitchens is a multifunction book. You can leave it open on a coffee table as a piece of publishing art. You can use it to launch your daydreams. But most of all, you can use it to learn from the mistakes and successes of others, and gain insight from a lot of very practical information.
Most over-the-top built-in appliance? Terrance Brennan's bread-warming drawer. But in this book, it makes perfect sense. --Schuyler Ingle
Customer Reviews:
Great Kitchens: At Home With America's Top Chefs.......2007-04-05
The color photographs in Great Kitchens are beautiful, with great detail. The book maps out each kitchen as well, and gives the reader remarkable ideas for first-rate kitchen design, fixtures, appliances, storage , cabinets, ect. from each Chefs personal home kitchen.
I only would have been a bit more inspired to see Kitchens of Chefs Bobby Flay, Or Giada DeLaurentiis,Emeril Lagasse, some TV personalities as well. Although, Mary Sue Milliken and Rick Bayless are in this book and show really creative kitchens.
Style Meets Functionality.......2007-04-04
Design a kitchen that not only looks good, but contributes to your own personal style of cooking.
What do you really want in your new kitchen?.......2007-02-15
After reading this book, I realized that part of me wanted a kitchen that would impress others. That aim partly conflicted with my personal aesthetic preferences and the way I like to live and cook. What inspired me the most in this book was seeing kitchens for cooks I revere. The diversity of kitchens is refreshing because many of the design magazines these days are focused on particular "looks." The pictures in the book are very good. Paul Bertolli's kitchen is interesting in that it doesn't have upper cabinets. I never considered not having upper cabinets, but it made the space feel much brighter and larger. The author also presents a floor plan for each kitchen and I found this really helpful for understanding kitchen dynamics.
My favorite kitchen book.......2005-06-03
I'm a coffee-book junkie if they're about house design. Most new books I order each month are tired re-treads and get a little stir of interest and then are donated to the local library. I won't part with this one. I took it to read on vacation, and it was gold for 800 miles of a long car trip. My husband was entertained by excerpts I read to him and fab photos I flashed him on boring stretches of desert highway. He's not into kitchen design (probably because he's done so many real projects) and even he found it interesting. The photos are top rate. The bottom line is that every kitchen is personal, and this book brings that message home better than any other kitchen book I've seen.
Great book about great kitchens!.......2005-03-29
Architect and author Colleen Mahoney hit a grand slam with this book! We just finished remodeling our own kitchen and this book was indispensible. The only thing missing was Colleen's expertise. We highly recommend visiting her website before you begin your project.

Customer Reviews:
decent book but not much more........2006-07-06
I bought this book for a class 2D interface Design class I was taking and even though I was "coerced" to buy it, I'd say its pretty decent.
It runs you through Interface design concepts rather competently, but that's where I have a problem with it. It never seems to push itself or the topic matter very hard. Its good reading but a bit dry and tedious in parts ... in fact it's as if it where ... (surprise, surprise) a text book ...
Nothing about it really stands out to me, there are no color illustrations and even the actual illustrations are unremarkable. Overall its a competent but unremarkable book. It will get you up to speed on all the things you need to know and i think it makes a decent reference book but outside of that I wouldn't spend money on it unless it was dirt cheap.
Try "Don't make me think" by Steve Krug instead
Excellent Book.......2006-06-12
I teach a course in User Interface Design. I have used half a dozen different textbooks, never finding one that had the desired balance of theory and practice. I have just finished my first pass through Marc Silver's book and am please to report that I have finally found my book.
The book is very well written. Each chapter starts with an overview of what he is going to tell you and ends with a summary of what he has told you.
I would recommend this book to anyone that wants a good initial overview of user interface design both for Internet based application as well as client based applications.
Robert Springer, PhD
Well-written, thoughtful, practical, and fun to read!.......2004-11-16
This is an excellent and thoughtful book on interface design. It's very practical and covers a lot of ground- how to create clear navigation, visually organize elements on a page, format text, improve your writing style- basically how to create interfaces that are intuitive for users. I especially appreciated the many images that illustrate examples of both good and problematic design, and the suggestions on how to improve them. The exercises really help you think through the most elegant solutions to different design problems.
The chapters on menus and controls and navigation are great for reference, explaining the advantages and disadvantages of common interface tools. I also really enjoyed the chapter on creativity and idea generation, and look forward to trying out the suggested techniques.
The author has a friendly, entertaining, and easy-to-read style. For students or people who are new to the field, this book is an excellent comprehensive introduction to interface design. And for people who are more experienced, it's a great reference and source of inspiration. I'd definitely recommend adding this to your library!
Excellent book!.......2004-10-29
This is an excellent book. It works on many different levels. It gives the artistic and psychological theory of interface design and it offers nuts-and-bolts practical information on working with clients and getting projects done. It works as an instructional text for a beginner and it works as a reference for a practicing professional.
In addition to providing a solid and comprehensive foundation in the principles of design, this book provides innovative and orignal design ideas and creativity boosters.
And it all comes in a well organized, well written package!
As an instructional designer (and big fan of design in general) I will keep this book in arm's reach between my books by Donald Norman and Jakob Nielsen.
Real-World Experience.......2004-08-02
Marc Silver's extensive experience in designing user interfaces is evident in this highly readable book. The numerous tips scattered throughout offer easy take-away value and the text gives you the "why" as well as the "how" of designing user interfaces. This approach will give you a foundation for design discussions with others involved in the software and web site development process including clients, project managers, programmers, quality assurance and support personnel.
As a practicing software development professional, I found the chapter on Designing for Accessibility particularly relevant to current Section 508 compliance issues with our clients (textbook publishers). There are also numerous design practices that we use in our daily work that are explained in the Specifying the Design chapter. The nuts-and-bolts of using the various interface elements are well covered in the Menus and Controls and Designing Usable Navigation chapters. Consistent with a real-world view, there are few absolute rules, but instead intelligent discussion of the trade-offs involved in making design decisions.
Although you'll want to have a more complete reference for starting a business, the final chapter on the User Interface Designer in Professional Practice provides helpful advice and tips on subjects such as proposal writing, maintaining long-term business relationships, and even filing practices.
You'll find this book very useful if you're a student looking for practical advice on user interface design in the real world. If you're a practicing professional you'll pick up some valuable tips that you'll use regularly in your work.

Customer Reviews:
A Fun Book.......2007-01-21
Janice Dickinson has a great sense of humor. While you may not agree with some of the things suggest, things she has done or the choices she has made, she doesn't brush them under the carpet. She's bold, she's honest and she tells stories with a twist of humor. A fun read.
Outlandish, Outrageous Fun.......2006-10-02
A FUN Read.
The sub-title says it's about Dating, Mating and Extricating. But I wouldn't take it too seriously. Sure, it's fine if you're a rich, six foot, supermodel with a body that's the very best example of what high priced plastic surgeons can build. Instead just read it for fun, in the same way we like to see the super houses of the rich and fameous.
And fun it is.
It's a description of a life where men are falling all over themselves to go out with her. It's the description of a girl getting ready to go on a skiing trip with a boy friend who goes out to buy $3,000 worth of clothes for the trip. It's probably not going to be of much practical help to the woman who finds herself single again, a few pounds overweight, with three kids to take care of. Instead, just read it for it's outlandish fun.
Janice is NO lady, but she's VERY funny!.......2006-09-25
A lady? Are you kidding with all the f-bombs she drops in this books? Still, it's the very thing to shake folks up. In her book, this Zza Zza Gabor of the 21st Century gives us ordinary people a peek into her egocentric "fantastic plastic" world. Normally, that would just annoy me, but I had to laugh at some of the "meow" factor in this book...and let's face, it she does dispense good real-life advice when it comes to dating...stuff that people NEED to hear rather than what they want to hear...and from the voice of true experience rather than some smug but clueless married woman.
Dickerson's advice is brutally honest and is given with a healthy dose of sass...and I like how she doesn't believe in all that "Rules" crap, nor does she put all the blame on dating failure exclusively on the female of the species like so many advisors do. I especially LOVE her comment about the men who are fat "trolls" but still expect to have a supermodel on their arm...it's about damn time someone said that to those megalomaniacs LOL. Her comment about the Twinkies had me nearly rolling on the floor laughing...crude but hilarious!
Note I am not claiming this book is illuminating, socially redeeming or profound. If you want that then I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere, but just for a bit of shadenfreunde inspired laughter at her and other folk's expense, then this is where you want to be...
P.S. I love the forward by John Lovitz too...he's as nervy and funny as she is...so did she sleep with him or not, that's what I want to know! That info could probably fill an entire book, eh? LOL
It's always fun chatting with Janice, but this isn't her best effort.......2006-09-13
Dickinson is a larger-than-life talent at modeling, hosting, and writing funny tell-all memoirs. She dished about her long, hard climb to the top of the supermodel world in No Lifeguard on Duty, and then she updated American on her life as a sober, wisened, hard-working mom in Everything About Me is Fake...and I'm Perfect. She's already revealed the most shocking and titillating anecdotes from her super-life, so her third book is packaged as a dating guide featuring her "patented blend of hard-won romantic wisdom and diva chic." She even manageds to dredge up a few more dating and bedroom antics to throw in her advice chapters.
The tossed-off tell-all anecdotes which worked so well in Dickinson's first two memoirs fall flat in this format. The book meanders with advice that applies more to six-foot, size-zero supermodels than to the average American woman. Sure, there are fun moments listening to our unapologetic narrator, but it appear that the books was constructed from scraps of shocking tales rather than as a whole entity. Dickinson's other books succeeded because they had a structure, a message, and even life lessons (as subtle as they may have been.) This is a mish-mash of tales masquerading as an advice book, and since when does an advice book need a glossy, dozen-page photo shoot of the (very beautiful) narrator in glammed-out poses?
