Highly recommended.......1998-10-05
Not only does this book provide you with detailed drills , it backs it up with specifics on what areas the drill works on , and highlights. It also has well written introductions on individual areas and the skills needed to to become a better offensive player , well worth the time to read and digest the knowledge it provides .
A good book.......1998-03-24
I haven't read many books about hockey coaching, but after recieving this book, I'm pretty happy with it. It teaches you the basic shooting principles and spends some time on each type of shot. Then it goes into sections about buildings skills for each type of offensive play your team might need to work on: 1-1's, setting up plays, etc. A good variety of drills are offerred in this book and the nice thing is you can photocopy them out one by one because they are restricted to facing pages - so that you don't have to carry the whole book around. I'll be using these drills with my kids roller-hockey team and I think it will help.
One of the best resources I've come across.......1998-02-13
Santa dropped this one in my stocking. It's great, particularly if you are searching for half-ice drills -- about half of the 75 drills are designed for half-ice. The strength of this book is its emphasis on puck movement to create scoring chances. The corollary is also true -- by emphasizing movement on the attack, goaltenders also improve their positioning and mobility. The drills are well-suited to kids aged 9 and up. I have shared the book with other coaches and, perhaps the strongest endorsement --my house league hockey association has ordered copies for all of our coaches!

No bargain as enticing as....When Emma Fitzgerald storms the manor home of the new Viscount Wakefield, she feels more than justified fury. Having just inadvertently witnessed his lordship in scandalous dishabille with his London mistress, her blood pounds with outrage....and with a thrill she has never felt. She has come to demand better treatment for his tenants, to seek some compassion, a shred of decency from this dastardly rake whose reputation for sin and debauchery precedes him. Now, the erotic image of his powerful flesh only heightens her determination to make this wicked rogue accountable for his actions....One sealed with a kiss....Certainly no woman has ever dared to take John Clayton to task as though he is a naughty schoolboy, and no woman, especially one as enticing as Emma, ever has refused to be baited by his bold, assessing gaze. Instead she seems to look beneath his skin to see more than a scandalous rake. But this prim and proper Vicar's daughter leaves him speechless when she proposes a bargain worthy of his own insolence. In return for his kindness to others, she offers herself. Vowing to regain the upper hand, John brazenly sets out to introduce Emma into the art of love-heedless of the consequences to his own heart....

Utterly Decadent.......2007-04-21
Cheryl Holt writes Regency Romance like no other author bordering on the erotic side at times but making it fun. When several elderly and disadvantaged tenants receive eviction notices, the daughter of the community's former vicar, Emma Fitzgerald barges into Viscount John Clayton's home and demands that he cancel the evictions. John is known for his scandalous behavior, but he has never been chastised like this before. When he makes a scandalous proposal to Emma, that he cancel the evictions in exchange for sexual favors she shocks him by accepting the proposal but demands he put it in writing. Emma has no intention of sleeping with John, she instead intends to shame him into cancelling the evictions by making him meet all the tenants. However, her passionate nature cannot help falling victim to her body's desires and soon she is shamelessly cavorting with the viscount. John knows nothing permanent can ever come of their relationship but he selfishly wants Emma's love so he pursues her and holds her to her committment. Called into account by his half brother Ian and his "non-fiance" Caroline, he must face decisions he has always hoped to avoid. When circumstances force Emma into dire straits she has no choice but to bow down to the mentally depraved local vicar Martin. Can John put his selfish aspirations aside and make sacrifices for love or will he allow his actions to ruin Emma and her family forever?
Oh, what a thoroughly bad boy is John Wakefield...you know one of those who is so yummy sexually but so very bad that you just can't resist....and Emma, what a delight, never dull or weak, she is a woman's woman. Great book, even better characters...I wonder if there is a book about Ian and Caro????There was definitely unfinished business there.
Ashamed of myself for reading this..........2006-12-30
I'll admit that I usually like my romance novels to be steamy. I felt the sex scenes in this book however were positively vulgar in some ways. It almost felt the sexual encounters were written by a man, no emotional connections, just the man telling the woman what to do to please him. If you want ROMANCE and not just sex then I suggest you read something by Julia Quinn or Laura Kinsale. I thought maybe it was just one poorly written book, so I read two others by the same author and couldn't finish either of them. Stay away from Cheryl Holt!!
Completely redeeming.......2006-11-25
There are books aplenty on rakes and hoydens. John the hero is one of those, oh so wealthy, sexy as hell, bored with life, has tons of money and yet is completely clueless of the plight of others. In comes the vivacious, slightly spinsterish, mouthy heroine Emma. She is the first to rattle him off his comfort zone and tell it to him like it is.
The opening chapter of the book is funny, and wonderful. I wish I could see John's expression when Emma agreed to his indecent proposal. I am glad to note that his illigitimate brother Ian, will be getting his own book in 2007.There are wonderful scenes of Emma getting John to open his eyes to the lives of others. How she manages to keep her virginity intact for the first three quarters of the book is a delight as well. Mind you, the language is rather frank and the sex scenes very sensual. John may think that he is a rake, but underneath that rakish demenour, lies a man confused about his own feelings.
I found the scenes about Emma's sisters poignant and tearful. Imagine stealing scones and then having lie about it to your sis. Read about the part where John visits Emma and discovers her actual living conditions. Three hanky scene for certain.
Now for the parts that I didn't quite like.
I didn't quite like the part about the unplanned pregnancy and Emma's ready acceptance about the situation. I would have made John pay dearly for his gaffe and complete lack of control that resulted in the pregnancy.
As in all romance books, all is well as John realises that Emma is meant for him and nothing else matters. He has met his redeeming angel and his equal in all things. It is refreshing to note that issues of titles, and honour and ranks were discussed. The accptance of these two on the stations in life and the final compromise is refreshing to read about. I only wish that Emma put John through hell first before accepting him into her bed and her life.
I am glad that they had their HEA. All in all, it is a good book, very sexy scenes, a dash of suspense, and great repartee between the H/h.
For more on this author, check out "Love Lessons" and 'Too hot to handle". I also recommend Lisa Valdez's "Passion" if you like your romances "hot".
Bold, but lighter than expected.......2006-10-19
I gave this book 5 stars because although I just got into reading Cheryl Holt (I think I am about 7 books into her stuff by now) she has a serious tendency to use phrases and specific wording from one book to the other. With that in mind you are asking yourself why I would still give it 5 stars well because although throughout the book I could remember reading her previous books versions of kissing, sex, etc in which the usually(I said usually don't scream at me here) virginal heroine is eager to find out about her passionate nature the scenes themself can vary but her specific wording of how the deeds go down can be repetitive from one book to the next. I still want to hear/read the story she has to tell.
Others have told you the story of John & Emma. Emma spies on him in her efforts to save some of the locals from eviction and blackmails or offers an amusing contract to trade the rents for her sexual favours. Remember this though you do read her true thoughts or description of them she never truly intends to give him anything much. So those people who complained about the story not delivering on that were a little harsh I think there is quite a bit of sex or sex play in the book although I have read much more graphic books there is plenty in this book you have to remember he's contracted a virgin who is in over her head but her hormone are leading her down a path that could ruin her, but for her own curiosity and her willingness to help others the story is told.
The story this time is about John, new Viscount and all around philander who arrives with a varitable house party of sex and debauchery to his newly inherited estate. Step in Emma the daughter of a vicar who is a little more curious about sex than she knows she should be so she sees the opportunity to help those less fortunate and explore some of these feelings. The story is funny at the beginning and tragic in others.
I continue to repeat myself in regards to my rating this book left me wanting more and Cheryl Holt is very good at that she isn't an author to leave you with the Epilogue and that is my worst complaint there may be an answer at the end of the book, but no ending as to what happens. Is that enough to support my rating I don't know, I know I enjoyed the book and found myself sad that I didn't find out what happened to the illegitate brother Ian who witnessed the contract. I won't give away the story, but I wanted to know about him as well...
I may be saying too many things that sound negative and they aren't truly meant that way. This review will be a little skewed because of my feelings about the book. I loved it, it tore at me at times for this couple and the fact that although fiction how messed up life truly is in that world of aristocrats where having an heir is more important than a good life. Where titles matter more than the people themselves.
Emma was a heroine I adored even at her weak moments she was strong, brave and bolder than most going after what she needed and although guilt pulled at her she knew what needed to be done. There is a interwoven story that will make you cringe but made for a horribly great beast of a character. Won't give that away but you'll figure it out when you get involved in the book.
Cheryl Holt has me as a reader and eager for more of her work and the greedy part of me yearns for that little blurb at the end of the book telling me about what happened after the decisions are made and everyone goes home whether happily ever after or not. I just need to know and know I won't. That's a definite page turner for me. I have never been one of those people to read the end of the book first just never wanted to, but Cheryl Holt and a couple of other authors have changed me and I am eager to take the ride they take me on.
The first five pages had promise. The rest didn't live up to it........2006-08-04
This book was seriously awful. The writing is fussy and stilted - the kind where a contemporary author thinks that she'll sound more historical if she uses five words where she could use one.
It starts off with a real bang - Emma watches John Clayton have sex with his mistress; it's a real quicky, and both of them seem kind of bored. Then Emma storms into the house and demands to see John, the viscount, so she can confront him about the evictions he's ordered. They end up making a deal: John won't evict the tenants if Emma will have sex with him.
After that, I was expecting the rest to be really uninhibited and erotic. But no, it's not. That leads to a seemingly endless serious of encounters where Emma cleverly avoids having sex with John, and John gets more and more exasperated by it.
There are a few twists to the plot, and they are all deeply cliched. There's a duplicitous brother, an evil mistress, and an even more evil vicar.
What really got to me is that John is constantly thinking, "Well, after a lifetime of obeying nobody, why is it that this Emma says jump and I say how high?" or "Isn't it strange that I usually hate being nagged, but I love it when Emma nags me!" And both of those things ARE very strange, and they require a little more explanation than "just because" or "true love makes people enjoy being ordered around and nagged."
So aside from this not-all-that-erotic, not-all-that-convincing reforming a rake story, the end is just...laughable. But I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise.

Where's Errol Flynn?.......2007-09-22
This is a fast moving futuristic Marine Force Recon tale where poor politics puts people in positions that they shouldn't be in. We have corrupt political people trying to take down minor planetary heads of state for some reason (we're never really told why, all we know is that the head of the Intelligence section believes that Atlas if unified may try to take control of it's sector but not real proof is given). Fortunately the writers moved from their poor political piece to their strong suite, the military (for those not familiar both writers have a good military background). In this case, their foil is a Force Recon platoon that goes to find out if the Cucumber Patch is set up for military operations and if the leader needs to be killed.
Rating wise, this is a 3.5 star book. It's fun and fast, but there's to much that isn't believable. First that the Force Recon troops are so much better than the regular Army troops. Will our Force Recon troops are very good at what they do, our Army also has some units that are very good at doing what they do. Having said that, all things remaining equal, the same should be true. Second, when the Force Recon troops hit the Cucumber Patch they're wearing their chameleon suites to enable them to blend into the background and not be seen. However since they have a nice big firefight with the local troops, the local troops should be able to figure out that they're not fighting troops from their world since the uniforms and weapons don't match anything from the other governments. Very poor job Mr.'s Sherman and Cragg. The final telling part is when the writers tell us that the Force Recon troops didn't do a decontamination prior to landing when the local authorities always require it. This is critical since it totally shows that the big government wasn't really concerned on hiding that they'd been there. Given that, why send in the Marines on a stealth mission.... Enough said. It's light, it's fun, since I said 3.5 stars and Amazon says only whole stars, I'll round it up because I was in the mood for a light fun book. That having been said, it could have just as easily been a 3 star book (maybe lower) if I wasn't in the mood for a light fun book.
Dissapointed.......2007-07-24
I have the complete StarFist series and looked forward to a new spin-off. This was so dull I don't remember half the plot. It was chock full of military jargon and protocol to the point where it seemed like more of a protocol manual than an action book. Almost as if the authors needed a quick cash infusion and pumped out something with manuscript notes.
Assassination and Politics.......2007-05-09
Backshot (2005) is the first military SF novel in the StarFIST: Force Recon series. Second Platoon, Fourth Force Recon Company, Fourth Fleet Marines, is tasked with the penetration of enemy positions to perform special missions. Recon platoons are smaller than initial strike force platoons, consisting of two sections, each with four squads with four men each. The Force Recon units are also equipped differently, having chameleon suits that provide virtual invisibility.
In this novel, Sergeant Jak Daly and his squad are sent to the 104th Mobile Infantry Division, Confederation Army, on Silvasia to find and fix the headquarters of the Silvasian Liberation Army. The 104th had been seeking this headquarters for seven months, without success.
The SLA is maneuvering within deep forest, but the Navy does not have any warships or sensors overhead to locate the enemy. Army recon units can locate the enemy, but always have to break contact or be defeated in place while the rest of the 104th is deploying to their position. By the time the main force arrives, the SLA headquarters has moved elsewhere.
The commanding general calls for help from the marines. Although he doesn't expect the marines to be any more successful than his own troops, their failure will take some heat off his shoulders. He is totally surprised when the marine recon squad successfully completes its mission.
In this story, after the return of Sergeant Daly and his troopers, the Second Platoon is tasked with an Ultra Secret Eyes Only operation by presidential special order. Something unusual is happening in the Union of Margelan on Atlas. The Central Intelligence Organization has reported signs of a secret weapons project being conducted at the "Cabbage Patch" facility and suggests an assassination of the President of the Union of Margelan.
Later, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff recommends the drop of a full corps on the site. President Cynthia Chang-Sturdevant soon discards that suggestion with a little assistance from General Anders Aguinaldo, Chief of Staff of the Marine Corps, who had been involved in the disastrous Diamunde operation. The President decides to send in the marines-- i.e., the Second Platoon -- in a covert sneak and peek with a sniper backup plan.
This story depicts J. Murchison Adams, CIO Director, as an aristocratic buffoon with a patrician attitude and a self-serving agenda. He promotes sycophants into the higher CIO ranks and demotes or retires dedicated professionals -- such as Anya Smiler -- from critical positions. He isn't interested in the truth, but in the power that well manipulated information can bring him.
In contrast, President Jorge Liberec Lavager -- target in this assassination plan -- comes across as an honorable man. A former general who has raised the Union of Margelan to political prominence on Atlas, Lavager is concerned with the well being of the citizens of his nation as well as the future of his daughter. He has enemies, both within his own nation and among the other countries on the planet, especially South Solanum, but he is fairly patient until his troops and citizens begin dying.
Like the original StarFIST series, this novel conveys some sense of the political processes that generate the orders for these troops. It tells of maneuvering among higher levels of the Confederation and particularly examines the degeneration of the Confederation CIO under a series of selfish and maladroit directors. It emphasizes the adverse effects of this incompetency upon the armed forces.
Recommended for Sherman & Cragg fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of corrupt officials, political maneuvering and special operations.
-Arthur W. Jordin
Not quite as good as the Star Fist Series.......2006-03-03
The book is a good read, though it does seem to lack some of the quality of the main StarFist series.
Not so much plot twists as slow plot curves with ample signage........2006-03-01
While Sherman none of Shermans books that I have read could be noted for complex or overly shprising plots, this one reaches a new low. It starts with a survey of all the political charcters being introduced by way of annoying gluttous epicurean metaphors and just goes down hill. From there it is a pretty strightforward unfolding of what is described on the back cover.

Much appreciated... The Knitting Way... .......2007-07-06
A book that helps you find the balance of knitting, a silent space, and finding the hidden bond beyond tapping the needles together. It becomes a mind-relief process...
counting, watching, listening and learning.
I was impressed with the personal touches, relating to find the transcendence of the 'spirit' via a craft that has been around for centuries. In between the little writings there are projects to motivate the mind and hands.
This book was like a friend, opening the comfort in knitting. I carry this book and my knitting with me to parks, on trips and to the doctors, etc.
Imagine a book on spirituality written by a lady who used to run a yarn shop.......2007-03-15
If you're curious, check this one out for the library. It's definitely not a "keeper."
This book was a complete disappointment.
The author has little spiritual practice of her own. So as a reader if feels like she's read some of the same books I have, and is making connections between them, but not particularly deep or significant ones.
The patterns are mostly for junk nobody wants or needs. As opposed to something useful or beautiful. I swear, I'd rather have one more pattern for a damn chemo cap than this ugly knitted spiral onto which you can sew charms from the craft store. (There is a really basic shawl included almost as an afterthought, and that may be the one thing I try to make.)
If you're interested in knitting as a spiritual practice, look elsewhere. I'm going to give Mindful Knitting and Knitting the Mystery a try.
lots of knitting, little spirituality.......2006-05-25
I found this book to be somewhat enjoyable, but I felt a little misled by the way it was promoted. It was a fast read, and had many interesting and enjoyable stories about knitting, some of which personally happened to the authors, some of which were from other knitters, and some of which involved the history of the craft. However, there was a considerable lack of stuff on the spirituality side of things. I was expecting a guide to using knitting for contemplation or discernment or some other means of connection, but found the spiritual content to be shallow. I realize there are other works on the topic of knitting and spirituality. Maybe I'll check them out.
One Odd Book.......2006-04-07
This is one odd knitting book. I thought it would enlighten me about knitting and spirituality. Not so. I am forcing myself to finish it and I keep hoping I will come to a part that will get better. I wish I hadn't bought it.
The book I've been waiting for.......2005-08-26
Finally somebody put into words what makes knitting so important to me and why it's more than just a hobby. They understand how I can discover more about myself through knitting and how I in turn I put more of myself into my patterns and projects. Fabulous. Can't wait for volume 2.

Fountains have become increasingly popular home-decor accents, but they can be somewhat pricey. Fortunately, many types are not very difficult to build, and can be made with lots of found materials and garden-center water pumps. Dawn Cusick's directions are good and her ideas relatively easy to duplicate. Her most successful designs are those that direct water to mimic nature by trickling over rocks and shells, or to flow through water-resistant items like brass vases, ceramic faces, or terra-cotta pots. Less successful are those that try to be too clever, such as the gift package fountain, whereby the water pouring over a stack of gift-wrapped boxes inspires nothing so much as the urge to grab a sponge to mop up the spill, or the office desk fountain, in which water cascades down a ladder of CDs set inside an empty computer monitor. And the lack of a source list may prove a hindrance to some, though most of the more specialized materials are readily available at home centers and garden-supply stores. Dorcas Adkins's Simple Fountains for Indoors & Outdoors takes a more elaborate, artful approach, but overall Cusick's book is a good way to begin a fountain-making journey. --Amy Handy

Average Book on Fountains.......2006-09-25
I purchased this book in the hope of learning more about how tabletop fountains were built. The photo's are very pretty and the diagrams are drawn very well. However, there are several mistakes in the book beginning with minor spelling to mislabeling of at least 1 project.
As an example, the project on page 104 titled "Hand-Crafted Wood Basin" properly indicates "Tung oil finish" in the materials list. However, in step 17 on page 107 she later calls it "tongue oil." Proper proofreading could have avoided simple mistakes as this.
Moreover, the author does not include a comprehensive list of distributors wherein one can find certain components. She does however, indicate various materials can be found at your local "garden centers, gem shops," and also mentions "yard sales, and antique stores including gift and toy stores." While she describes pumps and their design, she does not give a comprehensive list of the pump brands and where they can be purchased.
The author seems to have contacted several builders of tabletop fountains and had them describe how they built a particular fountain. It seems (to me at least) she then transcribed this into her work. Over all, the book is interesting and written toward a woman's point of view. However, as a man (and ladies, don't hold this against me), I know how to use tools. I therefore find her somewhat superficial manner of encouraging women in their use inappropriate. Whether driving a car, flying a plane, or frying eggs... there are proper methodologies to each. And women (as well as men) should learn the proper way to use simple hand tools. The tools she describes in her book are very simple to use and anyone building one of the fountains will have no real problems using them.
At least two of the fountains in this book I feel were totally useless. One uses circuit boards and another is an ugly concrete circle.
As a computer expert for 38 years I know circuit boards very well. While this may be an interesting fountain to some, finding proper circuit boards of the same size may present a challenge. Furthermore, there are very sharp edges to many solder connections where the IC's connect to the board. If one isn't careful, they can cut their fingers. Over time simple galvanic action will also discolor these boards.
The very next project is a "Picnic Basket Fountain" on page 51. The photo is very pretty but I don't think this type of fountain very practical. First, water and wicker don't work well. She has a plastic basin fitting inside the picnic basket and the basket filled with moss. Both the moss and the wicker will absorb moisture even if the water from the fountain never directly hits them. Water will soon be absorbed from the micro spray droplets in the air and the normal humidity which is created around a fountain. This project is also precariously balanced on an open window ledge. As I said: A "pretty" photo but not very practical.
I thought the concrete monstrosity presented toward the end of the book (pages 120/121) nothing but a waste and totally ugly. Furthermore, if one looks closely at the photo, you will note there are two large cracks on both the left and right sides near the top. The base is also leaking and has water discoloration. This would be a very heavy piece to build and the concrete would soon be saturated with water. If the concrete were sealed properly and were painted attractive colors, this project might turn into something appealing. I don't however, find a huge chunk of gray, circular concrete in my den or library to look attractive.
Lastly, the author could have presented far better methodologies for sealing her wood boxes from moisture. Remember folks, moisture and wood don't mix. Oxygen and humidity create wood rot and of course, wood expands and warps when exposed to water. I would therefore rethink the sealing methodologies she proposes for her wooden fountains.
If you are looking for beautiful photo's of tabletop fountains... if you are looking for a beginning "how to" type of book for tabletop fountains, I would purchase this book. For all of its limitations, it does present some very lovely and interesting projects and is easy to read. The price is right for this book and I don't regret buying it.
Tabletop Fountains: 40 Easy and Great-Looking Projects to M.......2004-05-19
Don't waste your money on this book. Most of the fountains displayed are either very tacky or have very minimal water action. I was very disappointed with this book.
Great Book.......2002-05-05
This was a great book. I've already made my first fountain. Good steps to follow to make fountains. I plan to make more
A good book but..............2001-09-23
In all fairness, this is a pretty good book. I was somewhat disappointed in the photographs of the fountains as I felt many were on the "tacky" side. I was looking for more sophisticated designs on a larger scale. I would have also appreciated a section on resources through the mail as opposed to your local garden supply, and a ratings on the best and most quiet pumps available. Anyone who could write this book and create so many fountains surely knows the best pumps to recommend. It would have been helpful to have her expertise passed on to her readers.
Let it flow, let it flow.......2001-06-26
This book is fantastic. It's got a ton of great ideas, with full color photos and lots of clear, simple instructions. While I only made one of the fountains in the book, my imagination was sparked for many other wonderful creations. If you're just getting started or need a little inspiration, pick this one up, its a gem.

Amazing Room Colors.......2006-01-09
The color photographs in this book are incredible. Most of the rooms are decorated with either bright, dark or medium tones of color. There are some more muted colors too, so something for everyone. There are various styles represented in this book, mainly contemporary, traditional and modern looks.
I'm not a color expert, but some of the colors used for the Serenity section, did not really seem serene, i.e. bright orange. In the Choosing the Right Color section, the chapters are divided either by color or mood (red, spicy, exotic, natural, green, dynamic). Along with a discussion of some possible color combinations, there are gorgeous photographs. When the section discusses a particular color, there are side panels from various interior designers or "experts" on their experience with the use of the color. Each color section ends with sample color palettes for monochromatic, complementary, split complementary, analogous and neutral color selection options.
I liked this book mainly for it's gorgeous pictures, decorating tips and color combination ideas.
Color Your Home.......2005-02-24
This book had some great color combinations. The rooms showed punches of color in a variety of styles, however, most of the rooms were contemporary/modern. If you aren't timid about using color you could definitely draw some ideas from this book.

The Diary of Mata Hari
ASIN: 1417912006 |
Book Description
1930. Coulson delivers a straightforward account of the life of Mata Hari, since it is romantic enough to require no embellishment. He also attempts to explain why this vaudeville star should have excited a sympathy that is rarely accorded to spies; and why she should count among her defenders princes, statesmen, savants, and artists, as well as genial boulevardiers, who, if lacking in a supersensitive morality, are without doubt loyal citizens of the nation to which Mata Hari did incalculable harm. An interesting book about the spy who continues to capture the reader's attention.
Customer Reviews:
Very biased.......2006-04-18
I was hoping for an objective biography of Mata Hari, but I was disappointed. Major Coulson appears to me to have been infected with the misogyny toward the "new woman" common for this era. He didn't offer any definitive proof that Mata Hara was a spy; didn't attribute much of the biographical information about her to any source; and skipped over many areas of her life. What does come across clearly is that he disapproved of her on moral grounds and swallowed the military's belief that she was a spy. She might have been -- but I can't form an educated opinion for myself based on this biased book.
