5 out of 5 stars Get Past It.......2007-05-10

Should the publisher have printed King of the Vagabonds separately? Sure, why not? Where they missed was in not clearly labelling it for those of us who bought Quicksilver, in which this book is contained as the second part. Readers felt ripped-off when they purchased a book they'd already read, and that's understandable. But the blame goes to the marketing department of the publisher, not to Neal Stephenson, who wrote an incredibly fascinating and diverse portrait of the world at the time when knowledge was first beinging to replace belief; when science emerged out of religion; when the world as we know it now was first being born. And it is an amazing accomplishment--for a second, just say out loud that someone could make a best-seller out of an eight volume series about the acrimony between Newton and Leibnitz over the discovery of the calculus, about the necessity of a stable currency, about the birth of 'natural philosophy', about the beginnings of cryptography; and that they'd be able to put in a grand showdown between alchemists and pirates--it sounds absurd, doesn't it? But Stephenson carrys it off magnificently.

This particular volume (yes, it IS the second book of the large volume Quicksilver--if your Quicksilver is divided into three books, you've read it; if your Quicksliver ends with Watterson escaping from pirates, you haven't and it's safe to buy) is a complete and shocking contrast to the first book in the series. That book was about the birth of science, it was very intellectual with little action and focussed mainly on the characters of Daniel Waterhouse and Issac Newton. King of the Vagabonds could not be more different--none of the characters in the first book appear (and I kept waiting for them to do so), none of the action overlaps, and the themes are completely different. Where Quicksilver (the book, not the volume) was about ideas, King of the Vagabonds is about action. It's pirates and gypsies and fighting and cavorting mostly through continental Europe. Not until the next volume (Odalesque) will any of the characters from the first two books meet, and then only incidentally. The big confrontations come much later, so don't expect it now.

I throughly loved The Baroque Cycle, as did my 20 year old son. It's definitely not for everyone, but if you are interested in ideas, if you enjoy the detailed portrayal of times and places other than our own, you might love it as much as we did. I was only sorry it was only 8 volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Repackaging Can Be a Good Thing.......2006-06-03

First off, this book and all the books in Stephenson's Baroque Cycle, however packaged and numbered, make for excellent reading. My stars are based on the excellence of the books themselves.

As for the reviewers who feel that repackaging is evil or greedy, well, okay. But if I were the author, I would be delighted that the publisher is investing the money and effort to repackage the books in a way that will bring them to a wider audience.

The new titles on the cover are racier and more true to the content; "King of the Vagabonds" and "Odalisque" will pull more readers to pick up a copy than "The Confusion" ever could. "Quicksilver", however, holds its own as a title in this company, so keep it.

Breaking up the enormous page counts into more tractable sizes will pull in many of my friends, who simply refuse to pick up fat books. They don't have the time, they're afraid the book will be hard reading -- whatever. So the publisher is accommodating that potential readership, and at the same time returning to the days of skinny book classics. (Ever read The Great Gatsby? That's a novella or novellette, not a novel! Ditto most of Hemingway's stuff. Ditto C.S. Forester -- novels, sure, but SKINNY novels.)

The fact of the matter is, it's cheaper to print one fat book than three skinny ones. In choosing to repackage the Baroque Series books in a more extended manner, the publisher is taking a calculated risk; they're boosting their costs, but also expanding their potential market to more first-time readers, who will then buy the complete inventory of Stephenson books once they get hooked.

So, good for Harper. And go, Neal Stephenson!

5 out of 5 stars Baroque Cycle.......2006-03-22

The Baroque Cycle is not a trilogy, trilogy meaning "a group of three novels which together form a related series, although each is complete in itself." It is eight novels published in three hardcover volumes. Thus "cycle." In an interview in 2004, Stephenson said that one reason why he named it a "cycle" was that some people would call it a trilogy when it obviously wasn't and he wanted to, as best he could, prevent that anoyance.

Stephenson and Harper Collins could have published this series in eight hardcover volumes from the beginning. After all it is EIGHT novels. They would have sold almost three times the volumes and made a lot more money. They didn't. Instead, they published the entire series in THREE volumes and as quickly as possible. It takes a long time to proofread, edit and typeset four hundred thousand words. Also they would have sold almost three times the amount of trade paperbacks. Now they are publishing each volume seperately in mass market. I think it comes down to two reasons. First, that it is, as above stated, eight novels. Second, some people find a nine hundred page volume intimidating but would be willing to read a four hundred page novel. This is who these editions are for.

It's striking how eager some people are to point fingers and claim someone else is greedy. They are ignorant concerning how difficult it is to write a book and their reviews end up revealing how ignorant they are concern writing and the publishing industry. I've read reviews of people claiming it was half the book, that the volumes were renamed. I questioned whether they have even read it. All I have to do is grab my trade paperback volume of Quicksilver and flip through it to find that the first novel (like the name of the volume) is Quicksilver, the second is King of Vagabonds and the third is Odalisque. How can a person read something so obvious and not remember? It isn't difficult.

A little education concerning payment rates for popular books. Agents commission is fifteen percent of the top of the author's commission. Author's commission for a hardcover is fifteen percent. For a trade paperback, seven and a half. For mass market, ten percent. This means that Stephenson earnes approximately three and a half dollars off every hardcover (85% of 15% of the cover price). He makes sixty-eight cents (7.99x10%x85%) from each paperback.

It's not difficult to do a little research concerning the contents of a book before it is released. The information was revealed on amazon months before the book came out in bookstores. The simple answer is, research before you buy.

If you haven't read the books, start with the Baroque Cycle start with #1. If you have, shut up.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it.......2006-03-20

I have to agree that extracting a part of a previous book and marketing it in this confusing way seems to be a rip off. Especially as I bought the initial book here at Amazon. Getting a e-mail about a "new" book sucked me right in.

5 out of 5 stars Half a novel is better than none........2006-03-18

Since the "Baroque Cycle" novels are so large, it looks like the paperback versions will be split in twain. It make sense, although it looks a little greedy.

Anyway, if you've already read QUICKSILVER, skip this book. If you haven't, dig in! Stephenson's epic historical fiction is a delight. His mix of history and politics (Louis XIV vs. William of Orange), math and science (Newton vs. Liebnitz), and rollicking adventure (the eponymous "Half-Cocked" Jack Shaftoe, King of the Vagabonds) makes for a rich reading experience. Stephenson gets a lot of flack for his tendency to "infodump" (go off on long factual tangents), but if you have an interest in the subject matter they just fly by.

    2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-09-16

Like a previous reviewer I was very disappointed in this book.
Maybe if I have never read other books of this genre I would
have found it stimulating. But, as a reader of romance novels
for many years there was nothing new here.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite of the bunch.......2007-06-10

The locale of Egypt for a romance novel is what really got me interested in this series, and since this is my favorite book in author Bonnie Vanak's series, I have to start my reviews here.

Badra (first seen in "The Falcon and the Dove") is barely more than a girl when she's sold into slavery to a disgusting, evil man. She and her friend Farah are saved by Khamsin warriors, led by Jabari bin Tarik Hassid. Badra is immediately attracted to Jabari's adopted brother, known as Khepri, and vice versa. However, she's suffered a lot at the hands of her former leader, so she's skeptical about all people. Over time, she grows to love her adopted clan, especially Khepri.

A few years later, it's discovered that Khepri is actually Kenneth Graham, heir to a fortune in England. When he leaves, he feels alienated from his family (of course) and can't adjust well to life in England... until Badra returns. But is she there because she genuinely wants to see him, or because he happens to have two precious necklaces that she needs to truly be free?

I liked Badra. She had some issues, but she was a decent person. The fact that she is Egyptian--and a romance heroine--is just plain awesome. And Khepri... my oh my!

Some of the mystery about one of the villains is kind of far fetched and yes, sometimes Badra makes cutesy mistakes that have me rolling my eyes, but I'm still enjoying this story. The sex scenes are steamy, but they don't have my toes curling. Still, as is well in my part of the world when I read this novel. Long live the Khamsin!

4 out of 5 stars Great exotic read.......2007-05-22

Good book that I actually finished (I don't waste precious time forcing myself to finish books I'm not crazy about) I love the locale of Egypt and England and the historical era. The characters were complex and emotions and history were essential to the conflicts in this book. The love scenes were wonderful and satisfying after all the suspense about it. (I hate books that build you up and say nothing.)

All the characters were intriguing and I especially loved Badra. No, she wasn't a mixed breed (with a European) or noble or wealthy or anything. She was a poor regular egyptian woman with brown hair and eyes (a rarity in romance novel although it is how most people look)and was sold as a concubine. This is one of the few times I've actually read about a regular human being like myself (I'm not egyptian but I still related to her)overcoming her fears and finding love with a good man (I love that he is English and light-eyed, good contrast). I definitely recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars Plain bad writing makes this romance novel a real dud.......2006-11-06

I was so looking forward to enjoying my time on maternity leave with a good sexy romance novel...and this book just could not deliver on any level. In fact, I am tempted to quit reading reviews in order to determine which books to buy since the reviews were quite fine for this novel...and I am not sure how these reviewers could possibly be talking about the same book that I tried to read. The sexy scenes were so poorly written and constructed that they could not thrill a love-starved teenager let alone a more mature audience. Two thumbs down for this one and I will not be attempting her other novels either.

5 out of 5 stars Another thriller from Bonnie Vanak.......2006-02-10

Fans of Bonnie Vanak's sensuous - and riveting - "The Tiger and the Tomb" won't be disappointed by her latest effort. Again set against the mysterious and exotic world of 19th-century Egypt, Ms. Vanak gives her readers another irresistible hero and determined, strong-willed heroine.

I was turned off by the sexual abuse of child Badra, but the reader heals from this initial repulsion even as the heroine does. Ms. Vanak handles this trauma truthfully and with good taste, a pitfall that has ruined many another otherwise excellent book. I highly recommend this writer's works. Her talent for hot, sexy romance blends so well with thrilling adventure. Check out "The Tiger and the Tomb" if you haven't already.

The gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival--a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known....

3 out of 5 stars Meh! So, where's this big space rock???.......2007-10-08

Ok, so this book is pretty "ok" overall. It's about a giant rock hitting the earth and the Armageddon aftereffects that follow this catastrophe. I have no problem with that. Good premise. And the author does a decent job setting up the action, characters, conflict, etc. Therein lies the problem; by halfway through the book, the rock has still not hit the Earth. It's like Niven was terrified of being faced with the prospect of actually writing about what happens once the asteroid hits. So, he prolongs the extinction event to a point past which I could honestly read. I hit mid-book (and this is not a thin book), and I had to put the book down. Now, had the characters or action taking place before the impact event been especially compelling, I definitely would have kept reading. But honestly the writing up until page 200+ is just so-so.

Read this book if you have a predilection to extinction event nihilism and a high tolerance for mediocre writing. Otherwise, your time is better spent elsewhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Best ever!.......2007-10-04

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I can't believe it hasn't been made into a movie.

    1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-09-29

65 pages into this book and nothing has happened. The author has included WAY too many characters, many of whom have similar names, not to mention their long, tedious back stories. This is one book that, despite my sincere effort to finish, forced me to abandon it due to extreme boredom.

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Meteors, asteroids, what else can you hit the earth with and write a book about it? How about a comet? Yep, that is what has been done here. Apart from sounding cooler, you get the usual nastiness and struggles as those alive in the aftermath have to deal with trying to stay alive.

New power structures, violence and eating take up a lot of the time.

5 out of 5 stars I'm on my 5th time through now. .......2007-08-26

Yes, it is "another" end of the world scenario books.

But it is one, that so many other authors should have taken notes on.

Excellent premise, strong/HUGE cast of characters.

Several different viewpoints from characters who come from multiple walks of life.

    Part One Of Two Parts

Monumental devastation will sweep across the globe if the newly-discovered Hamner-Brown comet collides with the one major obstacle in its path: Earth. For millionaire Tim Hamner, the comet is a ticket to immortality. For filmmaker Harvey Randall, it's a shot to redeem a flagging career. And for astronauts John Baker and Rick Delanty, it's a second chance for glory in outer space. But for a world gripped by comet fever, fascination quickly turns to fear. And only those who survive the impact will know the even greater terror, when rich and poor, politicians and killers, turn to each other or against each other - and the remnants of humanity grow savage to battle for what little remains.

Remember Orson Welles famous rendition of War of the Worlds as a radio play? Well, you probably didn't hear it, but you have certainly heard of it. This suggests one way to treat the audio tapes of this Niven and Pournelle novel. As you listen to it, pretend that it is a fitting update to Welles. There are 8 tapes. Long because the book is long.

A faithful hewing to the written text. And to some of you, hearing it may be far more gripping than the silent word.

Sadly, at $64 list price, it's not cheap. The novel itself is only a few dollars new or second hand.

                    Book Description

Why do we get sick? If God says we are "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14), why do we always seem to be hampered with health problems? While a perfect, pain-free existence won't happen on this side of heaven, there are tangible, successful ways you can improve your health and overall quality of life. The answers, says Dr. Rex Russell, an invasive radiologist, lie in God's Word. Through year's of searching for answers to his own struggle with diabetes, Dr. Rex Russell finally discovered a successful plan for healthy living: don't eat anything God didn't intend for food (e.g. avoid scavenger meats such as pork shellfish and catfish); don't become addicted to anything (i.e. do not make food your god); and ingest food before it is changed into nutrient deficient or harmful products.

The title of the book really says it all. God created us and gave us specific instructions on what to eat. We would be wise to follow them. I've given copies of this book to my whole family.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Gem of Books.......2007-02-15

I have found this book to be very insightful about my eating habits. Putting biblical boundaries around my eating choices actually gives me the freedom I've been needing to say no to all types of junk food. It has also helped me learn to trust God's guideance in other areas of life. God knows His creation and wants the best for us.

5 out of 5 stars What the Bible says about healthy living;three Biblical principles that will improve your health.......2007-02-08

This is the best book I have read with clear, easy to follow advice that will show you Bible references for all of it's tips. It has a page of foods with Bible verses to look up where the food is eaten. There are references for the unhealthy foods, too. If you want a straight forward book without a lot of the authors own "reasons why", you will be very happy. You will come away with the answers you were seeking.

believe it or not, have several books on the same subject. this is the best of the lot. live by these principles, and life will be good.

If you have the skills to do the work but need a great reference book to determine building standards, materials or just the proper name for a part you need to buy, you need this book. I built a "A" frame house from the ground up and used this book for reference throughout all phases of construction.
I purchased copies of this book for my son, nephew and brother- in-law. It's a must for you reference library.

                              June 2000

I have been using Mr. Wing's book for about 9 months for remodeling my house. It is an absolutely indispensable source of information about remodeling or rebuilding. You will easily get your money back from the saved time that this book will provide. It also will provide you with guidelines to check against what the contractor(s) you hire tell you they are going to do. Unfortunately, many contractors are not worth spit and many are dishonest. This book will help you to avoid them.

It is not a perfect book. The section on plumbing, while quite good, is minimal for the remodeler. E.g., Do-It-Yourselfers need more information on how to replace 50 year old(i.e., Cast Iron or Concrete) DWV plumbing and the MAJOR pitfalls of Galvanized piping and items like Drum Traps. It also does not have explanations or formulas for calculating flow rates and pressure for water supply lines. It should. One cannot install an irrigation system or even the house water supply without knowing that info in advance.

The electrical section is missing the worksheets for calculating the house loads, proper techniques for rewiring an old house, i.e., where should all those runs go and how to properly install the wire so that nobody can 'accidentally' pull them loose, and could use more diagrams of wiring techinques for lights and switches. The short section on circuit theory is a joke, I think. Mr. Wing must have felt obligated to put Ohms law in the book. If you don't understand circuit theory and the basics of electrical wiring, do NOT use this book to do your wiring - hire a contractor or go to school for a year or two and learn about them.

Mr. Wing tends toward 'hiring a contractor' to get those jobs done. As an engineer, I appreciate the wisdom of the advice, but that does not help the person that is going to do it but has never done it before. In short, you are going to need other references that provide more detail. In other words, the title of the "Only" Guide... is false. It should be the "Best" or "Greatest".

The book is really more of a reference guide and not a "how to" book. It may be all the experienced do-it-yourselfer ever needs, but not the novice. I'm a novice at many of the remodeling tasks but have many years of training and education as an engineer, so this book really helps me a lot. I'm pretty sure that anyone in the remodeling business would find this book to be complete, even though their professional opinions might differ from Mr. Wing's advice in certain sections.

I have to agree that the span tables are overkill for just about anyone because LOCAL codes overrule any data that is in the 50 pages! of Span tables and Truss information. Mr. Wing must have had a good source for Span information.

I should also mention that this book sat on my shelf for many months, unused, while I gathered basic information on remodeling. Once that info was absorbed and I needed more, I opened the book. It has not been closed since then - I can't close it because it has too many notes in it.

It is a great book. Not the "only" book you'll need, but if you don't get it you are going to kick yourself later.

Charlie Wing brings his ample expertise into this book. It tells and shows everything you need to know about building or remodeling a house. It has span tables, code checklists, instructions on estimating materials, etc. I've been in the construction industry for more than 5 years so I know what information is essential. You name it....it's in this book.

Once I saw that there was a Velantian in this, from E. E. Doc Smith's Lensman series, I was sold, and had to get it. Done as a page by page look at each species the artwork is excellent, and these are the sort of funny looking monster types that kids like too, so it can work on more than one level, most definitely.

Good book. I have owned this since I was a child. It was a great portal into many of these classic Sci Fi books as I would have never heard about them otherwise. Barlowe has a fantastic nack for bringing life to these aliens. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars From the author of Tales of Ancient Xenar.......2005-11-08

I enjoy art books, mainly books of fantasy art. But this book is more a sci-fi art book, and a very good one at that. Mr. Barlowe did a excellent job with the illustrations in this book. I read H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness." I had a hard time visualizing the Old ones described in that novelette. But Mr. Barlowe helped me greatly by including them in this volume and even summarizing their history. I would love to see how Mr. Barlowe would visualize all the creatures in my book, Tales of Ancient Xenar. I know he has a fantasy art book and I hope to see that one very soon. And to be honest, the only thing I am disappointed about is the fact Amazon.com ony allows a max of 5 stars. This book deserve well more than that.

I love, love, love this book. I got this book about 10 years ago, and it brought my imagination to life, and what an imagination. When there is something stressful going on in my life I pull out this book and just drift into another world.

The descriptions are so vivid, the pictures just come to life. I just wish there were pictures of Arthur C Clark's novels.

A book on great alien races from science fiction. Classic fiction to boot. Most of us know about the Overlords from 'Childhood's End', the Puppeteers from 'Ringworld', the Guild Steersman from 'Dune' and even the Old Ones from 'At the Mountains of Madness'. But do you remember the Thrint from 'World of Ptavvs', the Cinruss from 'Hospital Station', or the Cygnan from 'The Jupiter Theft'?
A great source of information on alien races with full color pictures, lots of data on history, culture and habitat BUT also a great source for finding classic stories you never heard of!
Do you know the Pnume, Salaman, Triped or Merseian? Well, get this book and found out who they are!

                                          Book Description

"When a film crew ventures out into the real world to create a make-believe world for a movie or television show, sometimes these two worlds clash. Making a movie on location is a lot like military maneuvers. A battalion of personnel and equipment bivouac, light up a target area, and shoot. As the smoke clears, and the film crew marches on, casualties are often left in the wake. Just as in war, somebody has to stay behind to detoxify the area and make reparations. That was my job. I was a Location Manager in the Motion Picture Industry during the last two decades of the 20th Century."
