5 out of 5 stars Mango Street - un regalo!.......2007-10-04

I was very happy to find this fine reading of this work on Amazon. Now I will be able to use it in my Spanish classes! as you know, the novel is wonderful, and the translation and reading are excellent. I am glad it was available. Now -when is some publisher going to do "Y no se lo tragó la tierra"??

un saludo desde la frontera

I recommend reading this book in English. Because the author uses some Spanish or Spanglish in the original version, the Spanish translation is hard to understand at times.

4 out of 5 stars My Personal Review on The House on Mango Street.......2005-10-05

The book, House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is an interesting book. I really do not understand why on some of the critiques people say they did not understand the book. I think it is very meaningful book. If you pay attention to it, there are many messages that Sandra Cisneros wrote on her book. I like this book very much because there are some stories that relate to my life, and I understand the concept of what she is talking about on her book. If there is, one thing that I did not like was that the book has many characters that I have to keep up.

4 out of 5 stars bueno libro pero triste en muchas partes.......2005-03-04

El libro se escribe en cortos capitulos de dos a tres paginas contando de sucesos en la vida de una niña, muchos triste. Es de una pobre famalia y el cuento es de su vida.

4 out of 5 stars Nell's Cowboy by Debbie Macomber (Large Print Mills & Boon Hardcover).......2006-11-04

Fifth book in the Heart of Texas series (also known as Sons of Promise): Lonesome Cowboy, Texas Two-Step, Caroline's Child, Dr. Texas, Nell's Cowboy, and Lone Star Baby. Nell's Cowboy is the book in the series in which the mystery of the ghost town of Bitter End is finally solved.

Description from the book back cover:

Nell Bishop, widowed mother of two, is turning Twin Canyons into a dude ranch. Her first guest is Travis Grant, an Easterner known for his children's books. Nell's kids are crazy about him, and Nell could fall for him herself. But it's too soon to be thinking of love and marriage again. Not only that, Travis seems intent on stirring up the town - uncovering the mystery in its past.

SONS OF PROMISE: They're rugged, proud and just a little sassy! They'll make you laugh and they'll make you cry. Meet them all in Promise, Texas.

2 out of 5 stars Not One of Her Best.......2003-10-30

I have read many books by Debbie Macomber, and this one was the least interesting. It really seemed to drag, had fewer characters and story lines than the other books. Nell and Travis, the two main characters of this book are not quite as interesting as the other match ups that usually populate her novels. The mystery of Bitter End does get solved, but that part of the story was really slow. Also, I felt that the minor characters like Nell's two children and her mother-in-law were not very well drawn.
I know that Debbie Macomber fans are very loyal, so I am sorry if this offends some of you, but maybe I have read too many of her books with the same plot.

          5 out of 5 stars Nell & a Second Chance.......2000-06-08

I Loved this book I could not put it down. This is a wonderful story at a second chance of love. I would love to return to Promise. I have over and over with the whole series. The stories are wonderful and you can't get enough.

5 out of 5 stars Nell gets her cowboy-after she makes him over from a Yankee.......1998-08-24

I want to move to Promise as soon as I get some directions from Debbie. I'll bring my own cowboy, but i love her charecters. I don't even care if I get to go to the ghost town. Nell's a widow trying to make it on her own after losing her husband, Not only does she have two kids to take care of, but an elderly mother-in-law doesn't leave her much time. Debbie Macober is a great big "BUY ME" sign as far as i'm conceerned. No weak women in her books. Even the spinsters are someone you wish you knew.

2 out of 5 stars An acceptable continuation.......1998-06-26

The 5th story in the Sons of Texas series seems to be the pivotal book in the continuing Bitter End Saga. The mystery of Bitter End is finally solved.... if you've read the other four books, you definitely want to know this, but the story of Nell and Travis seems to be lost in the process. If you haven't read the other Sons of Texas books, don't read this one first!!!!

              Book Description

The tyrannical Alliance continues its war against the Republic of Cinnabar, and Daniel Leary, newly promoted to Commander, and his crew have a new mission: Stop Dunbar's World from falling to an invasion by the planet Pellegrino. Nataniel Arruns, son of the dictator of Pellegrino, has landed with a large contingent, intending to set himself up as the ruling warlord, with the planet's population becoming workers-serfs-of the Pellegrinian overlords. And Dunbar's world has no more than their local police force to oppose him. Leary again commands the corvette Princess Cecile, but on this mission her missile tubes are empty. Only one man is in a position to aid Leary, but the rich and powerful would rather see him fail than succeed in stopping the invasion. Leary must somehow overcome a large entrenched force on an island defended by powerful plasma cannon and shipkilling missiles and backed up by a heavily armed warship in orbit, all while commanding only a small and virtually unarmed spacecraft. But Leary again has the help of Signals Officer Adele Mundy, who can make computer networks do the apparently impossible. Leary, Mundy and the crew of the Princess Cecile have gone up against impossible odds before . . . and their opponents in those victorious missions are still wondering just what hit them.

                Book Description

Machaelle Small Wright is a spiritual pioneer with the profound ability to "see" and "hear" the invisible forces of nature.

Her personal story is one of triumph, from a childhood of torment and isolation to discovery of her ability to communicate with the world of nature spirits and devas.

At "Perelandra," her 45-acre private nature research center in Virginia, Machaelle devotes her life to understanding and demonstrating a new approach to ecological balance:

                * The foundation and development of co-creative gardening * The ecological effects of humans * The roles of the animal, mineral and plant kingdoms * Humankind's unrealized custodianship of Planet Earth

A book beyond theory, Behaving as if the God in ALl Life Mattered will excite the minds and capture the hearts of all who dare to dream of a dynamic world of harmony and compassionate living.

5 out of 5 stars Another Step In the Right direction.......2006-02-23

I expected another great book about nature's ability to communicate with life forms in more ways than we expect. Instead I got MORE! Influencing each other in ways once couldn't imagine, this book builds past the works of even Michael Roads (author of great works like Journey Into Nature). It is almost too advanced for me just now, but a book I will definitely go back to again and again.

Reads like a story (because it is) then builds. Another one to put in my top 10 best books, which I'll have to extend to top 20 soon!

                5 out of 5 stars When you're ready, it's a journey you cannot miss!.......2005-10-06

A down-to-earth and simplistic account of valuable insights shed on the relationship between humans and nature and how humans can interact with nature and/or the spiritual realms to bring about profound changes to the quality of human life. What a blessing life can be just so much easier if only we're willing to make it so!

I have to say though this isn't a book for everyone, I definitely did not feel ready until having worked with MAP after reading her other book "MAP: Co-creative white brotherhood..". Nonetheless, I would not say this for others. But as Machaelle says, if you're drawn to the book then there must be some part of your soul that will find wonders with it.

The book's introduction defines the various types of sauces and chapters are organized geographically and inclusive of the world.

The last chapter features dishes using the sauces. Appendices include mail order sources from throughout the U.S. and the world and the web. This is an everything you ever wanted to know -- and more -- book.

4 out of 5 stars History, recipes and details of all hot sauces around !.......1999-07-08

If, like me, you get through dozens of bottles of hot sauce a week, you might be interested in this tome. As well as listing virtually every hot sauce on the planet (this takes up half the book !), it gives recipes of how to make your own copies of well known sauces (from Tabasco style hot sauce to Jamaican super hot).

It also gives useful recipes for barbeque style sauces (I can recommend the smokey chipotle sauce recipe, it's GREAT on ribs), and gives suppliers details and a few URLs for those who can't locate the ingredients they need.

All in all, a great book, but would have benefitted from a few more pics and a dash more colour.

                3 out of 5 stars A Short Review of the 6th Edition.......2006-08-18

I found this book very helpful. It is comprehensive in its coverage. It is somewhat difficult to find plates and could be better organized. The pricing should be more current. Plates from 1990 to 2001 should at least have going rates listed, not New Issue. Most readers are trying to get an idea of the value of their collection. On P.7, the author says that RI means issued in the last five years. Many plates issued as long ago as 1992 have NI. I found most of the values listed NR and BR to be fairly accurate.

4 out of 5 stars Great for general price guidelines.......1999-04-28

Great, some illustrations, some tips for buying and selling, however, not updated for the internet. Some prices are off the wall but overall a good reference.

                1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2002-07-08

I purchased the book originally anticipating patterns and helpful construction advice. Unfortunately, this was not provided. The book primarily focuses on embellishments, etc. While the bags are dated, they can stimulate some ideas. Unfortunately, many of the shapes, etc. are long past being stylish.

5 out of 5 stars Creative and Inspiring.......2002-01-02

Having given up much of my past creative sewing due to long working hours, Linda's book reminds me that sewing today is indeed a creative art form--and that the needle art forms produce not only attractive items, but useful ones as well. The excellent photos help even a novice with the details of construction and serve as a springboard for exercising one's own creativity!

                1 out of 5 stars Limited Information.......2001-04-06

The introductory chapter which gives basics of pocketbook construction are useful. The rest of the book deals mostly with embellishment and sewing techniques. I was disappointed. The color reproduction is good but many of the bags are dated and not fashionable at all.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book!.......2006-08-20

This book has inspired me like no other decorating book has. I got the book at the library first and after renewing it the maximum amount of times, figured I'd better buy it before I wore out the borrowed copy. I am filled with ideas and can't wait to try them out. Susan Sargent has a real gift for using color in the home, and her ideas are truly inspirational.

1 out of 5 stars New Country Home- Waste of your $.......2005-12-22

I was excited about getting this book but what a disappointment!!
Photos were mediocre at best and there was nothing inspiring that gets the juices going for dedorating with her ideas. It is not a book worth looking at more than once, but even at that I woldn't bother. Buy this book if you want to adore Susan Sargent and pay a big sum to just have a book with her name on it. I love decorating and this rates low on my book list. Sorry if I offend some with being candid, but I prefer to give a my true assessment and hope someone else doesn't waster his/her hard urned money on this book. Take a look at it at a book store before being lured to buying it based on a name and a nice cover.

5 out of 5 stars Loads of Color.......2005-05-05

This book is so beautiful. From the front cover to the last page, it is a sweeping expanse of color. Even if I didn't need ideas to decorate the house we're moving into soon, I would still love to sit and look at the book. The writing is simple and interesting, she talks about her journey to where she is now; her inspiration; history; being afraid of color; etc. The pictures are beautiful.
Everyone has a different sense of style, so her style might not be yours. I still think it is worth looking at, if just to see a different point of view.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures not much help with Color choices for home.......2005-03-02

I loved the pictures in this book, but I wanted to learn a little about color theory and what would work in my townhouse so this book was not very helpful to me.

4 out of 5 stars Exceptionally pretty book with good advice.......2003-10-14

Weaver, artist, colorist, free spirit--Susan Sargent is all these and more. After having trained and worked in textile art in Scandinavia, Sargent brought her bold, free-wheeling color and pattern sensibility back to the United States, where it has had a considerable impact on modern country decorating. Once the province of dove greys, white, taupe and beige, the boundaries of country decorating have been pushed out by Sargent, who is interested in helping us not be afraid of pattern and color--and in fact, she urges us to embrace both.

The book is an exhilarating visual punch. Sargent blithely combines acid green, periwinkle, daffodil, a deep coral red and a host of other colors to show us that--far from being intrusive or hard to live with on a day-to-day basis
--color can be simultaneously stimulating and calming.

The practical advice in here isn't anything you haven't read elsewhere already, but the book is worth the price just to see Sargent's heady color experiments and her considerable control of pattern as well.

                        Book Description

From the early twentieth century until the Communist takeover in 1949, Shanghai commercial artists created thousands of colorful posters and black and white advertisements that formed an essential part of modern life in the city. This visually appealing and richly illustrated work describes the origin and evolution of modern commercial art in China, focusing on colorful advertisement calendar posters that featured distinctive feminine images. It makes clear how essential commercial art and its institutional backing were to the development of modern art and even modern society in China over the past century.

The transformation of the Chinese advertisement calendar was the achievement not of the advertisers but of the artists themselves. With their varying artistic styles and different personalities, the artists brought the calendar posters to life. Through their artistic capacities they visualized effective and captivating images and through their technical skills rendered these images into perceptible form. Ellen Laing has assembled data scattered in a wide range of written sources to produce coherent biographies for eleven major commercial artists who designed calendar posters. She documents how they made their livelihoods as independent artists or in association with advertising departments of large companies or as members of commercial art studios. Their artistic achievements outside the realm of advertising art, such as Chinese painting and photography, are revealed. For the first time, Laing examines the fruitful relationships between commercial and fine artists and the important connections between those in advertising and publishing. (Commercial artists designed covers for popular fiction magazines, and, in turn, authors supplied the poetic inscriptions found on calendar posters.)

Selling Happiness discusses not only advertising art but also the production and marketing of the calendar poster. These posters, like other advertisements, were rendered in a Western realistic technique and were wildly and widely popular. Ordinary people throughout China often acquired them to decorate their homes. Laing outlines how the Chinese commercial artist, who rarely attended formal Western art classes, gained skills in Western representational art. She also illustrates the Chinese reliance on direct copying of existing images, from advertisement pictures printed in Western periodicals like Ladies' Home Journal or the Illustrated London News to photographs of movie actresses published in fan magazines. In the final chapter of the book, she explains how the styles developed by the commercial poster artists during the 1920s and 1930s became the basis for certain types of propaganda art under the Chinese Communists in the 1950s and 1960s.

As the first substantial investigation of commercial art in China, Selling Happiness explains how the early twentieth-century Chinese public came to accept Western-style art as mainstream and the heretofore ignored process by which the Chinese art world became (in some sectors at least) thoroughly cosmopolitan. A monumental study of the most important genre of modern Chinese commercial art, this volume will appeal to not only historians of Chinese art, but also those interested in literary, economic, and social history. It will be an essential resource for comparative studies of visual culture.

                          Book Description

James Harris (1709-80) was an author of philosophical treatises and an enthusiastic amateur musician who directed the concerts and music festivals at Salisbury for nearly fifty years. His family and social circle had close connections with London's music-making: his brother was a witness to Handel's will, and his correspondents sent him lively reports on all aspects of musical life in the capital-opera, oratorio, concerts, but also about the leading performers, music copyists, and instrument makers. In 1761 Harris became a member of Parliament and thereafter divided his time between London and Salisbury. His letters and diaries provide an unrivalled record of concert- and theatre-going in London, including exchanges of letters with David Garrick about a production at Drury Lane. As his children grew up an engaging family correspondence emerged. We learn of his daughters' involvement in concerts and amateur theatrical productions; his son, who pursued a diplomatic career, reported on operas, concerts, and plays in the court of Frederick the Great and Catherine the Great. Now, for the first time, it is possible to enjoy in full the lively first-hand descriptions from Harris's family papers, which contribute fascinating insights into contemporary eighteenth-century musical and theatrical life.
