Book Description

In this continuation to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, one of the best-loved novels in the English language, Elizabeth Bennet, now Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy and mistress of Pemberley, finds herself in a very different league of wealth and privilege. Writing to her sister, Jane, she confides her uncertainty and anxieties, and describes the every-day of her new life. Her first year at Pemberley is sometimes bewildering but Lizzy's spirited sense of humor and satirical eye never desert her.

Incorporating Jane Austen's own words and characters from her other works (who appear here with different names, either associated with Austen's life, borrowed from another of her novels, or a word-play on their original name), Jane Dawkins pieces together a literary patchwork quilt to tell the story of Lizzy's first eventful year as Mrs. Darcy. The result is an entertaining and satisfying tale, which will surely delight Jane Austen fans everywhere.

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-10-02

I found this book boring and not up to the reviews I read here. It didn't have the same sense of sly humor present in Austen's work.

3 out of 5 stars Sweet, but unoriginal.......2007-09-17

I have to admit myself disappointed by this book. While it is sweet, the format of it allows for no dialogue, by definition of course. But the witty dialogue between Elizabeth and Darcy is the most fun part about P&P. Also, the author mercilessly steals characters from other Jane Austen books. The Norlands are there, cameoing as themselves. That is not so bad because there story does take place in Derbyshire and so is appropriate. But there is a Emma/Knightly couple, given another name but their story is exactly the same. There is also a Mr./Mrs. Elton couple, again under a different name but the characters are exact. I find this just plain laziness. Please, give us some freshness!

It is a quick read, and nice for that feeling of escape to elegant times. But so far it is my least favorite of the Jane Austen fan fiction I have read this past year. My favorite is An Assembly Such as This, told from Darcy's perspective. That is a three volume series and gives you new characters, and plots to get involved in. Much more fun than this book.

That all being said I may read the sequel, because as I said it is lighthearted and pretty to read. But, as with the first, I will get it at the library rather than spend the money for it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous - Terrific - Must Read for Austen Fans.......2007-08-17

I believe there are a multitude of devoted fans who have read Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, loved it, and wanted to see it continue. With this book, LETTERS FROM PEMBERLEY, author Jane Dawkins does an admirable job of what could be. She is not necessarily trying to write a sequel in Ms. Austen's style; as this would be impossible, but gives a believable look at Elizabeth's life through a series of letters to her sister Jane during the first year of her marriage. These letters, all written by Elizabeth bring back fond memories of lovable characters from both the book and the BBC series (which I've watched numerous times) and introduces new characters as well.

I say now, I liked this book! The letters, all written by Elizabeth to her beloved sister Jane, were concise enough for the reader to read between the lines and able to imagine Jane's responses. Elizabeth's letters were witty and lively describing her initial discomfiture at becoming the mistress of such a grand estate and how worried she was at making a good impression in front of Mr. Darcy's friends; knowing full well, that in their mind Darcy had married beneath him.

What I found so very sweet were the lovely and thoughtful things Mr. Darcy did to ease Elizabeth's path into feeling like Pemberley was indeed her home, and how she described how very dear her Mr. Darcy truly was after her initial harsh determination of his character. And of course, I laughed out loud when she made mention of their mother's (Mrs. Bennet) `nerves' and how `vexed' she could get with her two elder married daughters.

In Elizabeth's letters, one is able to see the joy she has found in her new life with new friends she's met as well as keeping up with the daily lives of past friends, such as her friend Charlotte, who married Mr. Collins; her selfish sister Lydia (now Mrs. Wickam) and a multitude of other acquaintances during her first year at Pemberley. I was fully engrossed from the first letter to the last, and so wish there were more. For all Jane Austen fans, this is definitely a must read!

4 out of 5 stars Amusing look into Mrs. Darcy's new life.......2007-08-15

Dawkins really captured the feeling of Pride and Prejudice in Letters from Pemberley, especially Lizzy's wit and sense of humor. A bit of warning to the future reader though - this isn't really a book with a goal in mind.

Dawkins offers a peek into the new Mrs. Darcy's letters. Just imagine a time without phones and e-mail, when your correspondence is a part of your daily routine, reading letters over breakfast and responding to them. Maybe I'm just old fashioned like that, as I still enjoy writing and receiving snail mail. The action doesn't focus on Lizzy and Darcy; it just gives the reader the details of the year after their marriage, introducing some new characters while staying true to those we've already met in the original novel.

One of my favorite parts of this book was when Lizzy described Darcy's attempt to obtain the services of a certain artist to capture her likeness for the Pemberley gallery. She jokes to Darcy that the artist probably considers his skills above capturing "merely tolerable beauty." Darcy then fires back that in response to this, he would write to the artist:

"On the contrary, his wife's incomparable perfections are marred only by a head filled with fanciful nonsense, the result of an excellent memory and a cruel fondness for teasing an adoring Husband who surely deserves better treatment at her hand."

It's really an interesting book to read, as it really does feel like the way Lizzy would write and I'm glad Dawkins didn't dishonor the tone of Pride and Prejudice. I would sometimes think that I'd like to read a "Letters from Netherfield," but it wouldn't be as amusing because Jane's too nice to poke fun at people.

5 out of 5 stars "An old-fashioned patchwork quilt".......2007-07-30

As the title implies, Letters from Pemberley: The First Year is a series of twenty-five letters from the new Mrs. Darcy (aka Elizabeth Bennet) to her sister, the new Mrs. Bingley (aka Jane Bennet). Readers of Pride and Prejudice will remember that a letter played an important part in changing Elizabeth's feelings about Darcy, so Dawkins choice of letters as her medium fits quite well.

Dawkins described her work as "an old-fashioned patchwork quilt, where in place of the scraps of fabric . . . there is a line or a phrase or a sentence from one of Jane Austen's books or letters stitched alongside the lesser scraps" of Dawkins' work. She also took favorite characters from other Austen novels, gave them different names, and worked them into Lizzie's letters. It was very amusing to pick out who was who or which lines were from which books or letters (I even kept a little list! It is quite gratifying to figure these things out!).

I quite enjoyed Letters from Pemberley: The First Year and was glad that Dawkins did not feel the need to make Lizzie, Darcy, Jane, Bingley, Georgiana, and other characters new again. We read Jane Austen novels repeatedly because Jane created such realistic and fabulous characters. I think too often people try to "improve" upon them, which just cannot be done. Dawkins also understands this and wrote these letters in Lizzie Bennet Darcy's persona, not some other Lizzie's. I can easily imagine Jane having written these herself.

Lizzie is adjusting to life as mistress of Pemberley and wife of Mr. Darcy, attempting to develop a deeper relationship with Darcy's sister, Georgiana, and find her place in a higher level of society than she is used to living in. As much as her family drove her crazy on occasion, she misses being with them. Her letters to Jane describe her activities, her feelings, and her hopes.

Elizabeth and Jane are closest to each other out of the five Bennet daughters and their letters provide solace as they make their ways in their new lives. I can imagine doing the same with my sister (if she wrote letters).

I look forward to reading Letters from Pemberley: The First Year again (and figuring out more of Jane's lines!) and would recommend it to any Austen fan!

2 out of 5 stars Boring and bad.......2007-09-19

Meet Lord and Lady Morgan. They have a problem, eight beautiful, spunky daughters who they are too poor to dower for marriage. Oh whoa! What shall they do?

Meet Edmund Wyndham-he also has a problem. His wife is dead, and he has no heir for his vast estates. What shall he do? Go find a rich heiress to enrich him and his lands as a real man of the period would have done? Nope-Edmund, who apparently knows about inherited genetic traits, heads over to the Morgan's to get a wife because of Lady Morgan's extreme fertility MUST have been passed on to her daughters-and all he wants is a wife who doesn't squint.

Enter Blaze, the soon to be wife who has no real personality but it supposedly spunky and fun and sexy, and Anthony, Edmund's nephew and heir who is in love with Blaze inexplicably and also for some odd reason does not desire to inherit from Edmund.

Ah romance novels-nothing needs to make sense, the plots go on and on and on when a point of resolution has clearly been reached and so many exclamation points are used!!!!!! The fact that this novel has some stuff (badly written and researched stuff) about Henry VIII makes no difference-it's just a bad book and every character is annoying beyond belief.

Not recommended-two stars.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2003-09-01

This was the first book I read by Bertrice Small, I was 16 at the time. Now, nearly 15 years later, I am still a huge fan of hers, and have all the books she has written. This book was so good, it got me 'addicted' to her writing. This book has great historical detail, and is written so well you can visualize the things you are reading about. If you haven't read anything by Bertrice Small, this is a great start. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes historical romance!

4 out of 5 stars What about Delight?.......2003-01-28

Am I the only reader who thought that Delight's punishment wasn't severe enough? (Spoilers)She plotted to kill her sister, with no remorse, and she didn't even get a slap on the wrist! Everyone felt sorry for her and she even gets to marry a wonderful guy! If I were Blaze, I would beat her black and blue! Other than that, I really enjoyed the book, as I do all Small's books.

3 out of 5 stars I love a good romance.......2002-11-27

This should have been a great story, but I don't enjoy reading about 30-40 year men who marry children. It may have been the norm in the era but, it is not romantic to me. Blaze was a great character however, I don't believe that a fifteen girl (which is how old Blaze is when she marries Edmund) could come off sounding so more mature no matter the time period or circumstances. Another thing that disturbed me was the language. A seven year old [is using bad language]. I'm appalled by this language. I wonder if this word was used then. I prefer romance between two people who are at least in the proximity of the same age because it is more believable.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Small's Few Outstanding Heroines.......2002-11-05

This novel is character driven by the title leading lady. She's a woman of principle and of honor, a woman who really knows how to love and the pain loving can sometimes bring. I like Blaze better than Small's other heroines specifically because she's a simple country woman doing what she has to do and meeting her obligations without hesitation. Blaze finds adventure without becoming a pirate or being abducted into a harem--she's not unlike someone the reader might actually know in real life. Find this one if you can. It's worth the search.

          Book Description

From the acclaimed author of Fine Prey, Polymorph, and Evolution's Darling (Philip K. Dick Award special citation and a New York Times notable book) comes a sweeping epic. The Risen Empire is the first great space opera of the 21st century and Scott Westerfeld's dazzling hardcover debut, the first of two volumes. The undead Emperor has ruled his mighty interstellar empire of 80 human worlds for 1600 years. Because he can grant a form of eternal life-after-death, creating an elite known as the Risen, his power is absolute. He and his sister, the Child Empress, who is eternally a little girl, are worshipped as living gods. No one can touch them. Not until the Rix, machine-augmented humans who worship planetary AI compound minds. The Rix are cool, relentless fanatics, and their only goal is to propagate such AIs throughout the galaxy. They seek to end, by any means necessary, the Emperor's prolonged dynasty of one, and supplant it with an eternal cybernetic dynasty of their own. They begin by taking the Child Empress hostage. Captain Laurent Zai of the Imperial Frigate Lynx is charged with her rescue. Separated by light years, bound by an unlikely love, Zai and pacifist senator Nara Oxham must each, in their own way, face the challenge of the Rix, and each will hold the fate of the empire in their hands.

Or something like that. In the Risen Empire the ruling class has functional immortality, but the catch is that they are dead.

Political opponents say this causes stagnation, and, indeed, other races and cultures are advancing a lot faster than they are, technologically.

The Rix exist to seed planets with AI minds, and the captain of a ship that failed to stop the kidnapping and killing of the Emperor's sister is ordered to try and stop the new AI incursion into their space from communicating with a battleship.

4 out of 5 stars Amazingly quick and easy read.......2007-03-11

Space Opera, or sci-fi for that matter, is not my usual fare, but I wanted something different, and drawn by the books cool cover (yeah, silly I know), I picked this up. What a surprise! This book is a true page turner, with short, almost movie like scenes flipping from character to character and scene to scene. It was filled with tons of sci-fi techno jargon, BUT it didnt slow the story or make it hard to read (as I said, not my usual).
The interesting, and yet, scary thing for me was how much of this technology is not only possible in the far future, but I can see much of this happening in the near future. Mr Westerfeld's ideas are not that outlandish or quasi-science. He clearly researched this book meticulously to ensure it held a realist feel, and that only adds to the books depth. I found myself wondering later if this was what the future holds for us.
I highly recommend this book and it's sequel to anyone wanting an easy sci-fi read.

3 out of 5 stars The Lesser(?) of Two Evils.......2006-09-08

The time is in the distant future. There are several human empires in the galaxy. Two of them are at odds with each other and neither is a particularly thrilling choice.

On the one hand, the "Risen Empire" is ruled by an emperor who has been dead for centuries. He was once a doctor who tried desperately to save his kid sister from a fatal disease. He succeeds, sort of. He finds a way to introduce a "parasite" that keeps the body animated and the mind active after death. He tries it on himself in a grand suicide and then bestows this gift on his sister. The result is immortality after a fashion. Another result is raw power. By being able to bestow immortality on selected people, he is acclaimed as emperor. The living now have to maintain the overhead of an increasingly large population of the dead.

Another empire which sprang from humanity is very different. It is one of artificial intelligences of planetary scope. These intelligences exist only to propagate themselves throughout the galaxy. A faction of humanity worships these intelligences and has in turn been modified by them.

As the book opens, the cyborgs have attacked an imperial planet in an effort to seed a mind. In doing so, they have captured the sister of the emperor and the imperial fleet is in place to try and stop this propagation. They do manage to defeat the hostage takers but not before the mind is seeded or the imperial sister is killed. The emergent mind learns a secret about the emperor before its commandos are killed. We never learn what that secret is but the mind will do anything to get its one remaining commando into a position to transmit the information to one of its ships still in place. The emperor is so frightened by this possibility that he will sacrifice anyone and anything to prevent it.

Caught in the middle are two principle persons. One is the captain of the ship tasked to attack the cyborg ship and the other is his lover, a powerful senator of the opposition.

The book is well written and keeps interest throughout. It posits some interesting ideas and has a good story. The fact that we don't know what the secret is makes for a minor irritation but the only real problem is the ending. The stage is set for a confrontation between the captain's little ship and the alien behemoth. The stage is set but the actors never get where they are going. We will have to wait for the next book to learn anything.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome read........2006-08-27

I picked this book up having no idea what to expect. I was delightfully surprised to find such an exciting story. I liked the characters, and found the universe that Westerfeld created to be complex and interesting. If I had one criticism for it, it would be the amount of detail given about how the technology of this futuristic universe works. Still, this flaw didn't come close to ruining the book. I would suggest this book to ANY sci-fi fan.

          5 out of 5 stars A Sci-Fi Lovers Dream Come True.......2006-07-06

The Risen Empire is exciting from page one to its cliffhanger ending. If you love real super-tech science fiction with battle cruisers, cyborgs, nano-bots, and the bizzare cultures which have to go with those things, then this is the one!

5 out of 5 stars simple and yet profound..........2006-02-10

This book has been a blessing to read. Foster came through as simple, and yet profound in his writing style; there was ample references to scripture, and Foster brings modern times into perspective with long held biblical spirituality; I plan to reread this book over again.

5 out of 5 stars Straightforward overview of the common challenges.......2004-02-09

I have read the Chinese translation of the book. In fact, the translation is sold in a set of three different books. I have read them at different times. It provides direct and biblical insights into how Christians should view money, sex and power. Richard's writing is succinct. If you want to dive further into a topic, a rather extensive bibliography is provided.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Three!.......2004-02-04

PLOT: Money, Sex, & Power, these are the three big temptations of church leadership. The early monks battled these with vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Protestants today are more likely to use the tools of simplicity, fidelity, and servanthood. Foster does an excellent job exploring these three dangerous areas.

POSITIVES: Foster draws from Scripture, other authors, and his own excellent understanding of theology. This is a book I find myself coming back to again and again.

PROBLEMS: Foster is given to strong statements. I didn't agree with all of them. I found myself highlighting certain passages and writing notes of praise. I found myself highlighting other passages and disagreeing with them. This is not a problem for me. I often interact with the books I read and sometimes go back years later and interact with my own notes as I wrestle with myself. But this could be a problem with some readers, who either feel they have a handle on theology or are threatened by ideas they disagree with. Let the buyer beware.

5 out of 5 stars How to Live in Today's World.......2000-09-08

I think this is one of the best books on the difficulty of living in a society driven by money, power, consumerism, sex and continual change.

Foster has a compassionate, realistic view of what life is really like and how to deal with it. His opening chapter, Money, Sex and Power in Christian Perspective lays out the focus of the book - it is difficult to walk the walk. He isn't focusing on the external morality of ethical behavior, but on the social implications. He offers historical views of attitudes on money, sex and power, and divides the books into sections that focus on each issue.

In a small section titled "When Good Things Go Bad," he says, "There is, of course, a proper place in Christian life and experience for money, sex, and power. When properly placed and effectively functioning, they have the ability as nothing else does to enhance and bless life." He goes on to identify what the problem is in each area -the demon in money is greed; the demon in sex is lust; the demon in power is pride. And he tells us that these really are not matters we can be neutral about in hopes that they will disappear - if we ignore them, we will be dominated by them.

How do we avoid be controlled by our own desires, instead of controlling them to our own advantage? In the Power area, Foster suggests that we face the demons within, instead of projecting them on others. In addition, he suggests that we stop trying to manage and control others, and focus on our own spiritual powers.

Foster manages to be 'proper' without being unrealistically 'prim.' Whether read by fundamentalist Christians, small "c" christians, or Buddhists, this book gives food for thought. Agnostics, athiests and many free spirits will be turned off by references to the Bible and the focus on Jesus.

I used to think you had to agree with everything you read in a book, to find it of any use. There are parts of this book I don't agree with, but I took what was helpful, and left the rest. Those who keep an open mind will find that this is not a dogmatic, preaching book, but one that will make you think.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Malcolm Hutchinson Ed.D.......1999-12-21

I first read this book in 1988 it has guided me often from then until now. Its clear ethics will give valueable insight to all who will apply its ageless principals regardless of their personal faith practice. Foster's blending of practical reality linked with bibical concepts leaves one thinking in new (old) ways that still make since in a world who's ethics seem to be changing daily; humanism like marxism will be soon forgotten, yet the insights exponded by Foster will continue to make a profound positive impact. Having taught Business ethics and philosophy I have found no better book to read.

Finally! Food with Southwest Flair for Diabetics—and Their Families!
            Dear Friends,
After being diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago, I decided to follow up my bestselling book Fat Free and Ultra Lowfat Recipes by writing a cookbook of tasty dishes for diabetics. There was such a terrific response from folks around the country to Real Food for People with Diabetes that I decided it was time we had our own cookbook of America's favorite ethnic food, Mexican and Southwestern cooking. As a diabetic, I still want all the old favorites and comfort foods I grew up with instead of the boring and bland choices normally available. And when it comes to Mexican food, I love the spicy flavors and zest of the real thing. So, as I've done before, I developed recipes for authentic-tasting dishes that are lowfat and low-calorie—delicious and healthful.
Now, you too can savor enchiladas, tamales, and burritos filled with cheese, sour cream, refried beans, and chunky salsa and still maintain a safe, healthy, diabetic diet. Each quick, hassle-free recipe includes a nutritional breakdown and lists the diabetic exchanges to take the work out of cooking for a diabetic lifestyle.
To your good health and enjoyment,
            Doris
With this collection of more than 150 enticing soups, salads, side dishes, entrées, and desserts you will find it easy to limit fat without sacrificing flavor. Enjoy "real Mexican foods" such as:

These exquisite items range from a Huichol Lace Sun Catcher (perfect for beginners) to an advanced-level Waterbird Pendant, from a simple Ladder Chain Bracelet to a Sun Rosette Medallion. In addition to the patterns the guidance on technique, there's fascinating background information on the myths and legends that inspired each design. A Selection of the Crafters Choice Book Club.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2006-08-24

I own many beading books, but this one is a favorite I go back to over and over for the beauty and originality of the designs, as well as for the clear instructions. Projects are suitable for beginners who want to build their skills, as well as for the more advanced. The designs are Native American in theme, yet with just enough of a modern twist to be unique and a great jumping off place for one's own designs. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Bead tales and design.......2005-09-03

"Beadwork has an amazing history through the millennia. Even with so many brilliant examples of beadwork found on all continents except Antarctica, the Native American style of beading remains extremely popular worldwide. It is characterized by bright colors, bold designs, and extravagant beauty with natural themes. Embedded in the designs are symbols of spiritual significance to the native cultures originating them."

"People who do beadwork readily acknowledge that their beads 'speak' to them. Beads are like letters that are merely abstract symbols for composing words of human expression. They form a universal language that appears to cross all cultures."

from Native American Beadwork, Theresa Flores Geary

Theresa Flores Geary weaves tales and plant lore with drawings and patterns, as well as practical advice like how to finish your knots, in two lavishly illustrated books on Native American beading techniques and projects. She also nourishes a creative space with plenty of opportunity for improvisation and design on the part of the beader.

Much of a beader's time is spent looking closely at beads. Full-color photographs throughout the books breathe detail into the process of creating about three dozen beaded projects for beginners to advanced beadworkers. The photographs include finished beadwork pieces by many artists, as well as close-up shots of the bead projects at various stages of completion and diagrams which are easy to understand.

Of Tewa and Aztec ancestry, Geary started doing beadwork at 14, taught by her mother, Anna Flores, and later received advanced instruction from elders of the San Carlos Apache tribe while working as a clinical psychologist. For the past ten years she has devoted herself to full-time beadwork, writing books and teaching.

About a project with a traditional Thunderbird pattern, Geary writes: "A famous Kiowa poet, N. Scott Momaday, describes a different beast that roams the sky during a thunderstorm... Momaday's beast has a horse's head and a fish's tail. From its mouth lightning flashes, and its tail embodies the hot wind of a tornado. During a particularly violent monsoon-like season in southern Arizona, his description comes to life."

Geary's descriptions bring to life many projects, including a round peyote-stitched hatband for advanced beaders, Apache weave (or brick stitch) earrings, loom designs, Huichol lace, miniature ears of corn using a corn stitch, and eyeglass and badge holders. The range of designs makes the book useful to experienced beaders and to those just starting out. Lists of materials and instructions are clear, and most show ways that the patterns can be adapted to other projects.

Some of the stories Geary spins are old and pass on culture, and some are new, told in a clear and personal voice. The whole is a delightful how-to on beading techniques for any level of experience in a rich cultural context.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Native American Beading.......2005-06-10

I have a Master's Degree in Museum Studies, and have devoted much of that study to the care and well-being of beadwork from all over the planet. I also interned at the Bead Museum in Glendale, AZ during the summer of 2000, where I learned much of this knowledge, but also I have worked for the Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center in Omaha, Nebraska, where I learned preventive conservation techniques. I, myself, am an accomplished beadworker, and have found this book to be filled with many great designs and techniques; ranging from very simple, to difficult. The average beader will find this work to be most rewarding, while beginners and advanced beaders alike will definately learn something new. It is one of the best technical books out there, with lots of helpful, clear photographs.

I am familiar with many of the projects in the book, however, I immediately sat down and began working on the Blue Violet Flower pattern and fell in love with the outcome! Many of the projects are pieces you will find for sale on some reservations today, as I also worked for the White Mountain Apache Tribal Museum and Cultural Center -- and have seen them there first hand. The purchaser of this book is getting the authentic thing, and that is rewarding in a time when beadwork is moving further and further away from its Native roots.

                Good Work Theresa!

                David Bingell

3 out of 5 stars Only useful for beginners.......2003-04-26

Being a fairly new Lightwave user, I pre-ordered this book. I also own all of the Desktop Images training DVDs for LW 7 as well as a few of Class on Demand's training DVDs. By the time the book arrived I'd been using Lightwave for only about 3 months and it was already useless.

There is some good information in here, and the book is fairly light reading, but the book tries to be too general and doesn't provide enough coverage of specific topics.

In all fairness, this book would be the perfect textbook for an Intro to Lightwave class. However, if you can model, texture, animate and render a simple object then this book probably won't offer you much. You would be better off buying another book by the same author, "The LightWave 6.5/7.0 Project Handbook"

                  1 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Work.......2003-03-24

The book seems well writen and I was really enjoying it until page 120. That's when the included CD is first called for use. I find that anything in LightWave format is not seen by my computer - a new Mac G4, duel processor with OSX 10.2.4. I was careful to read before ordering the book if Mac is supported. They say it is. I'll try it tomorrow on my PC, but my graphics machine is the Mac. If I can straighten this out I think I will highly rate the book. If not, well then I'll stick with no or one star!

This book doesn't explain it all. That takes more than 350 pages. It seems to skim the surface, and there's lots of surface to be skimmed! This is a four or five book program. The included program manual is very complete, but such a dry read you won't believe. Kinda like the early Photoshop manuals.

                  5 out of 5 stars A good start.......2003-03-02

The Lightwave 7.5 Primer is a good book to introduce you to the Lightwave program. The thing I most enjoyed about the book was the quality of the tutorials. All files were easily found, and all the examples worked! This doesn't always happen with other books.
A 3D package is basically lots of programs rolled into one. Modeling, texturing, lighting, animating, rendering. All these could be there own area of study. Mr. Beck's book does a fine job of introducing the basics of each of these to the reader.
Only a few noticible typos and errors are found through the whole book. The appendices of CD content and system requirements should definitly be at the beginning of the book. And although the book is chatty enough and very approachable I found that it ended a bit abruptly. But these are basically nits I'm picking. After completing this book I feel more ready to dive into some of the other Lightwave books out there.

5 out of 5 stars Calling all Lightwave Newbies.......2002-12-13

For any Lightwave newbies, save yourself some angst and get The LightWave
                  7.5 Primer (Patrick Beck)

Mr. Beck makes everything seem so clear and easy. I wish I'd had this when I
set out to learn Lightwave. I think this should be included with every copy
of Lightwave, especially now that the unwashed masses (like myself) are getting into 3D.

5 out of 5 stars A highly recommended instructional reference for the novice.......2002-12-07

The Lightwave 7.5 Primer by professional animator Patrik Beck (Founder of Electric Crayon Studio) clearly, carefully, and accessibly instructs the reader in the fundamentals of using the LightWave toolset to craft three-dimensional animation. Individual chapters adroitly address the basics of LightWave, techniques for crafting surfaces with texture and luminosity adjusted to the right degree, animating object deformation, particles, hypervoxels, and much, much more. Numerous samples and black-and-white photographs enhance out the thoroughly "reader friendly" text. An accompanying CD-ROM offers a small but utilitarian library of files useful for undertaking the instructional projects of the primer, including images, objects, scenes, color versions of the book's figures, and rendered animations in MPEG and QuickTime. The LightWave 7.5 Primer is an essential and very highly recommended instructional reference for the novice, and has a great deal of informational value to offer even the more experienced LightWave user.

5 out of 5 stars Best Pink Floyd book!.......2003-09-20

Look no further. This book is the best describing the history of Pink Floyd with quality images of Syd and the early Pink Floyd. The only thing close to this book is the video epic "VH1: Legends Syd Barret & Pink Floyd Story". Between this book and that video you will know everything about the history of Pink Floyd.

4 out of 5 stars A must for Floyd fans.......2001-04-09

The book is subtitled "a visual documentary" - however it's more like the band's diary and scrapbook. Every appearance, concert, recording session and disk is cataloged in this amazingly well researched volume. A must for Floyd fans. The band's early history, particularly the 1960s, is well documented. Also done well is the famous Roger Waters / David Gilmour rift - this difficult history is analyzed so we can see each point of view. As the founding members go their separate ways, they have different paths in the book's catalog of events.

The photographs are great and include many very early shots. I only wish that captions had been included, however. I'd like to know if any of the shows I attended were captured on film and included in the book.

5 out of 5 stars The visual truth.......2000-03-12

This book is a documantary for someone who knows about the real Pink Floyd. It zero's in on the older more contraversial stuff. It has some really rare photographs, very interesting. This book is a little harder to read than In the flesh cos it is ment for someone who knows a bit about the Floyd. All (most) of the Pink Floyd books I read focus in on The wall, or The darkside of the moon. I highly reccomend this book.
