Book Description
In his classic biographies of fictional characters (Tarzan Alive and Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life), Hugo- and Nebula-award winning author Philip Jose Farmer introduced the Wold Newton family, a collection of heroes and villains whose family-tree includes Sherlock Holmes, Fu Manchu, Philip Marlowe, and James Bond. In books, stories, and essays he expanded the concept even further, adding more branches to the Wold Newton family-tree. MYTHS FOR THE MODERN AGE: PHILIP JOSE FARMER'S WOLD NEWTON UNIVERSE collects for the first time those rarely-seen essays. Expanding the family even farther are contributions from Farmer's successors-scholars, writers, and pop-culture historians-who bring even more fictional characters into the fold.

A Wold Newton heroic delight.......2006-10-12
This is a further exploration of the relationships in Philip Jose Farmer' s Wold Newton Universe, as seen in books like Tarzan Alive, Doc Savage - His Apocalyptic Life, and the Other Log of Phileas Fogg.
Myths for the Modern Age is worth it for the Captain Nemo is Moriarty piece alone, not to mention the fabulous cover, complete with Modesty Blaise!
Here you have a collection of essays that inter-relate various characters, families and other information, by several different authors, including a compatriot, as well as Eckert himself, not to mention Farmer himself, so you could call this an anthology.
Please be aware that this is not a novel, if that is what you are looking for.
Eckert has a passion for this stuff, yes, you could call it obsessive monomania, but that is what collecting, which is really what this is all about, 'collecting' characters into universes and relationships, and utter, utter, fandom.
He is also a Philip Jose Farmer expert, to boot.
This is just fantastic stuff. Check out his and Farmer's various websites too, they are great. There are also related mailing lists that are worth it, if you are interested to this level.
Something else I have found : if you ask these authors a question, or anything like that, they will answer. They are completely devoted.
Outstanding book, in presentation, content, and participation. I am sure Farmer is quite pleased.
5 out of 5
What a fantastic book!!.......2006-09-30
I'm so glad that all these bits about The WNU have been collected in one volume. I first got interested in PJF's concept when I read his Doc Savage bio. I've been lucky enough to track down a mint HC version of it...at a very reasonable price! This book has made me almost miss my Metro stop on more than one occasion. If you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, pulp heroes, or just want to read some very creative writing then you must buy this book. I plan on giving a couple as gifts this year.
I am also lucky enough to have been accepted into the Johns Hopkins University's Master of Arts in Writing Program. I showed this book to one of my instructors and he was fascinated by it. I gave him the nutshell explanation of WNU and told him that, after I get my degree, I would like to teach a course or two about it. If you are already an English/Writing teacher, please do the same. Let's srpead the fun around!!!
Welcome to the universe!.......2006-08-19
Philip Jose Farmer had created the Wold Newton Universe. The 'stargate' necessary to access that Universe is the book in question. Read it fast and by the end of it, you would be hooked. Read it slowly, you might feel sleepy. Neverthless, the book is wonderful.
Chris Davies is WRONG!.......2006-05-19
Having read both this book from cover to cover and the reviews that are posted on this sight, I can only conclude that one of the reviewers has an axe to grind with one or more of the writers responsible. Don't let that sway you; this is an excellent book that, yes, occasionally offers up contradictory information - if you take the time to read the introductory portion CAREFULLY, you will note that not only does Mr. Eckert acknowledge as much, but goes on to state that this is part of the fun in the game these writers are playing. Some people should lighten up and learn how to have fun already!
It Opened up the Farmer World to Me.......2006-05-09
The contributors for this book provide a wonderful look into the world of Philip Jose Farmer. I had only read one Farmer book (The Tongues of the Moon) before delving into Myths. The excitement and intelligent discussion of Farmer's works in this volume prompted me to order several other titles. I am now on my third.

Book Description
As she peered over the edge of the gallery, Sabrina Cameron trembled at the sight of the sun-bronzed giant striding into view. But she never recognized the stranger...not until the moment she found herself surrounded by arms of warm steel—and drowning in smoldering green eyes that had once held cool disdain but now shimmered with passion. Morgan MacDonnell, the boy, had been her tormentor. Now it looked as if Morgan, the man, would prove infinitely more dangerous...
Though hatred divided their clans, Morgan MacDonnell had come to Cameron Glen hoping for a truce...only to find that by evening's end the only way to avert bloodshed between the two families was for him to marry his enemy's daughter. But even as Morgan spirited Sabrina away to his rugged fortress, his battle would not be won. For this delicate rose of a girl would put up a bold fight...and the spoils of victory would be nothing less than a heathen MacDonell's heart.
Customer Reviews:
Could of been excellent.......2007-09-25
The story was just inches (pages) from pure brillance. As previously mentioned, the third part is painful. The story takes off, and then stagnates near the end. I did not like the "twist" at all. Actually, I disliked the dramatic character change in Sabrina. I found myself annoyed and disguised with her, and was rooting for Morgan to just leave her and move on. If only the author had cut all of that out, we'd of had one classic tale.
what a wonderful surprise.......2007-09-15
this was my first time reading teresa medeiros, and i was pleasantly surprised. she wove a wonderful tale with two characters i really fell in love with. and while i'll admit, when the unexpected twist came, i briefly felt manipulated, but once i let go and went with it, i found myself actually in tears at times -- which has never happened before with a romance novel. i look forward to reading more of her work, hoping they will all be of this caliber. great romance, great story, and great tension. great job, teresa!
A timless Romance - Teresa at her best.......2007-08-02
I have read this book a few years back and decided to pick this book back up and re-read it. Still the best. I am glad I forgot most of the details as it felt like reading a new book all over again. This was the first book I bought from Teresa, and then I was hooked. It only took 1 book I have lots of her other books because of how great this book was. This is one of my top 10 books that I can re-read over and over again. Other faves: Cherished from Elizabeth Thornton, Fallen Angel from Elizabeth Thornton, Once and Always from Judith McNaught (this woman writes so vividly she is incomparable), O'Rourkes Bride from Barbara Dan, Lord of Seduction from Paula Quinn, Wild Hearts from Virgina Henley, Paradise Wild from Johanna Lindsey, and You Belong to Me from Johanna Lindsey. Please give these books a try - I consider myself lucky to have come across them.
Morgan is supposed to be a rough, uncouth highlander being raised in the highland as the clan cheiftan of a impoverished clan. Sabrina is the beautiful daughter of a rival and much more wealthy clan. Morgan was sent to live with Sabrina's family when he was eleven? for 5 years? so he could understand their way of life. This embitters him when get goes home back to his clan and realize that there was a reason why the Camerons called the McDonnells barbarians. He secretly yearns for beauty, refinement, knowledge that his clan and his family lacked and were not exposed to. Sabrina tries to befriend him at an early age but Morgan refuses to be drawn to her as she epitomizes everything he is not and cannot have OR to afraid to reach for (somewhat cowardly I think but since he redeems himself later he is forgiven). This is a great book - words cannot describe but there is a satisfaction in watching them fall in love knowing so much stands between them.
Could have done without the third part of this story.......2007-07-09
From an early age, Sabrina Cameron knew that part of her Scottish family's heritage was to be at war with the MacDonnells. When the heir to the MacDonnell chieftainship, Morgan, comes to stay with her family in the summers, Sabrina is the first to extend her hand in welcome in the hopes of brokering a tentative peace. When she is brutally rebuffed at every turn by the young MacDonnell, Morgan, she vows never to let him make her cry again.
Twelve years later, these powerful Scottish clans are still enemies, but the Camerons invite the MacDonnells to their home--again in the hopes of peace. When a tragedy happens during this visit, the only way to save the two clans from declaring war on one another is for Morgan and Sabrina to marry. All her life, Sabrina has remembered Morgan as a young boy who hated and taunted her, and she did her best to return the same feelings of disdain. When she is forced to marry him, Sabrina decides to make the best of a bad situation, and plans to tame the wild MacDonnells and their fierce warlord chieftain.
A Whisper of Roses is a novel in three parts. I can say that for the first two parts of this book, I LOVED it. I was enjoying the story, I loved the idea of a brooding Highlander and the half-English slip of a girl who tamed his heart. But then Medeiros went somewhere in the third part of the book that I didn't agree with, couldn't follow, and didn't jive with the rest of the story. The girl who our heroine became in the third part of the book is not the girl who I was rooting for and in awe of in the first two parts. No part of the Sabrina who I'd become attached to was present in the third part, and this new girl ripped to shreds any ideas I may have had about a happily ever after for this couple.
I have read one Medeiros story before and remembered not liking it, but I couldn't exactly remember why. Now that I've read this story, I'm pretty sure I know what it was. It's getting me all attached to characters with artful storytelling and careful breaking down of the walls between hero and heroine and then throwing some wrench into the mix that turns things upside down and ruins an otherwise good story. I can't say that this book was bad, because it wasn't, I can say, however, that if you want to enjoy it fully you should just stop reading at the end of part two.
Alright...Ok Summer Read.......2007-07-07
I didn't love this book. The story took some weird turns. I have read most of this author's books. Seems I really like them, or they are just ok. This is in the just OK category.

Getting a Tad Lame.......2006-09-28
In this 3rd installment of the Doom series, Fly, Arlene, Jill, and Albert make it to Hawaii, the last stand for the human resistance on earth. But Fly, Arlene, and Albert are in for another surprsise, they learn that they were pre-warned by an alien species months before the attack begins. Now, Fly, Jill, Albert, and newest addition Hidalgo must journey back to where it all began, Phobos, and activate the gate and go and meet their new alien allies in an attempt to finally rid the world of the evil aliens that have invaded their planet.
This book actually seemed to go downhill some, there was hardly any action to it at all which blows. I mean, I know that they can come up with something good, but it wasn't anywhere ever close to being as suspenseful as the first book, actually I was rather disappointed, there were only a couple of exciting parts in this book.
Gotta give it a 6/10.
When All Hell Breaks Loose!.......2006-03-15
This book is really cool. It has lots of gore and lots of blood. It is also cool when you read the book for the first time. You can picture what's happening in the book on your head. I loved the book when I first read it in seventh grade. When you read it in day time its not that scary. But when you read it at night it is a little scary. For me it was not scary because I already read it in seventh grade.
I really love this book but I don't know if you will like it. They made it into a movie in 2006. I watched it three times in arrow. My two brothers went with but they got tired on the second time they saw it. I bought it the movie two months later. I watch it ever day before I go to bed. I recommend reading this book first before you watch the movie. I really love this book.
Not as good as part 1 or 2 but still cool.......2004-10-19
The story begins to take a left turn but still stays on coarse at the same time. Overall good book.
Going downhill ..........2004-09-03
Am I still reading about Doom? Is this still about the game's storyline?
Doesn't seem like it. As you progress through, the author seems to drift further and further away from what iD wanted Doom to be all about. This would be perfectly OK if the sci-fi plot was better.
If you want to remain with the story that the videogame sketched, you shouldn't read this book, you should stop at volume two. If you're curious what the author has to offer, I guess you could keep reading.
I didn't rate this book like so because it's drifting away from the original storyline, I gave it this rating because I didn't think it's that great of a scifi book, plain and simple.
The worst book of the series. But still worth reading........2003-12-06
This was the worst book of the series! But I still think it is worth reading. It takes place in Hawiia were they recieve a message beckoning them back to phobos. Fly and Arlene are sent on a mission to find mankinds rescuers.

Living from Your Center: Guided Meditations.......2005-08-22
Very helpful, Iyanla is a calm and soothing guide. The meditations, though simple, are very very effective. I am now greatly interested in hearing more from, and expect to be just as pleased with, future purchases of this author.
I was disappointed with this cd.......2005-02-23
I was disapointed with this cd. The title,to me,promised some tangible way to connect better with your center. I thought the meditations were "trite" and not too effective. I learned one good breathing exercise on the cd or I would have rated it a one star.
Customer Reviews:
Love and food....raw, cooked, stewed, and otherwise served up.......2007-03-02
I remember being in High School and the Dining In section was the first one I'd turn to when that months issue of GQ came out. I LOVED his writing style, and was so amazed at his frank and open love of Miss F.
If you have the means, get a hold of this book. The recipes are worth the purchase alone, but even without them, the individual stories of love in the truest sense, and in all flavors, make this a wonderful addition to hearth and home.
The best part, is that the stories lend themselves to reading in short bits...a great way to spend a few minutes each night or each week connecting with love.
An exuberant celebration of love and food.......2004-08-31
When GQ Magazine asked fiction writer Bob Shacochis to become their "Dining In" columnist, he replied that he wasn't a food writer. Fine, said the editor, write about anything you want, only tag a recipe onto the end of it.
This 1994 collection is culled from 5 years of that marvelous "prose stew" of love and good eating, laughter and tears, food and its emotional connections.
Shacochis is funny, savage, opinionated, volatile. He has no patience for whining or pomposity. If you don't like dogs or meat, you don't want to know him.
Miss. F., his common-law wife since the early 70s, is the center of the book, the one for whom all the great food is created. We get glimpses of the early, tentative days, when housekeeping routines jostled and clashed and Miss F. actually had the temerity to interfere with the cooking.
But most of the book is as current as a diary with nostalgic excursions to their beloved Outer Banks (Miss F.'s Champagne Scallops, Grilled Tuna Hatteras Style), tension-filled days in Sardinia leavened by Grilled Oysters, and dinner parties great and awful. Shacochis relives the time Miss F. forced a pate-laden cracker into his mouth. "I didn't feel titillated, nor nauseated, nor vulgar. Instead I felt the strangest desire for the best wine I could get my hands on, something elegant in taste to compliment the unique pungency of the pate." And he appends his recipe for Herb Pate which includes bacon, pork and veal.
We follow Miss F.'s teeth-gritting progress in law school. He works in the house, she works out of it and he is very earnest about this. After all, this is a man who travels with his garlic press. "Suppose I were to tell you that last month I slapped Miss F. because she wouldn't come to dinner when she was called." Miss F., miserable, was entrenched in law books. He didn't, of course, lay a hand on her but instead embarked on a campaign of grilled lamb chops and steamed asparagus, pork tenderloin and black beans. What finally worked (after the exam) was Earth, Fin and Fire Chowder, a mouth watering concoction of clams, scallops, shrimp, black beans and cream.
The first section of the book brims with good cheer and affection. The second is a different kettle of fish. He and Miss F. spent a miserable year in Italy and he documents her depression with dark ferocity. The humor has a bitter bite. From this section comes Miss F's Prisoner of Woe Soup with chicken and sausage, several rich, rich pasta recipes and a sinful Tivoli Torte which takes forever to make.
They come through the crisis in Section Three. They get a new dog and Miss F. graduates law school (Steamed Blue Crabs) and turns 40 (Apalachee Bouillabaisse with oysters, clams, shrimp, snapper, lobster, and stone-crab). These essays display an exuberance tempered with recent pain.
"Domesticity" is a window into the soul of a marriage and a terrific cookbook for the serious meat eater.
WOW! Why is this book not a best seller?.......2003-09-23
I can?t believe I?m only the 2nd person to review this book! Bob Shacochis was an instructor at a writing conference I attended about 5 yrs ago in Santa Fe. He was sexy, charming, dangerous, engaging, a great reader/teacher ? and I bought this book because the woman I was sharing a room with had the major hots for him and was too shy to buy it and ask for him to sign it herself.
It?s absolutely wonderful, laugh out lout funny, provocative, and the recipes sound totally yummy.
When asked to write a regular food column by GQ magazine, Shacochis was told he could write ?anything as long as you tag a recipe onto the end.'' He wrote wickedly honest autobiographical anecdotes on his life with his Miss F, his ?common-law wife of 17 yrs.? Shacochis equates food with sex in outrageous examples that I don?t want to quote for fear of spoiling the pleasure for new readers.
Do NOT buy this if you?re looking for a cookbook. Many of the recipes are written like essays, and Shacochis clearly assumes a certain comfort in his readers with not only the kitchen but also the BBQ, the hibachi, the Coleman stove, the open fire on a beach, and strange little kitchen gadgets in Italy.
But whatever. This is one thoroughly enjoyable book. Even if you never intend to use a single recipe from within its pages, buy it just for the joy of reading parts of it aloud to your spouse in bed at night. Who knows? It may lead to more than the intention to cook up some gumbo.
A stylish guide to satisfying desires, culinary & romantic........1997-08-16
Culled from his columns for GQ magazine, this collection deals with many kinds of appetite, though it all starts with food: 75 recipes intertwined with Shacochis' ruminations on love, life, and the style with which one should conduct both. Insightful & hilarious, this book will whet your palate & provide the recipes which will quench your hunger, all the while entertaining you with cautionary tales of the author's own wayward slouchings toward the title state: Domesticity with his soul-mate, Miss F. From meatloaf to ceviche, from artful teasings to true, commingled love, let Shocochis be your guide. You'll at least get a memorable meal out of it

Good try but look for another book.......2003-12-19
This book as some good information but a lot of misinformation regarding dates of release/retirement/status. The pictures are pretty fuzzy so don't count on detail. A lot of the information was copied directly from the old Greenbook and Rosie Well's price guides. No original thoughts contained in this guide. Where did those Secondary Market prices come from? Little research and a lot of regurgitation involved here. Look for another guide.

Very good, writer is a hands on builder........2001-12-12
This book is a must have if you are even thinking of building a stone building. Great details with a clear picture of the work involved, and lots of heads up pointers. Could of used more pictures, the ones it had were all black and white. The only thing about this book I didn't like was it was written in 1991 and after 10 years some contruction methods change.
Different, VERY different.......1999-06-08
If you don't like to get dirty, don't read this book. But for the rest of us, this book is a great source of information that really teaches one how to build a cathedral-styled house, market, or any other design to get get peoples attention!

Amazing!.......2007-06-01
"Wow", was my first response to this book. I think this book does a fabulous job of demonstrating fresh and creative color schemes and helping you put your own together. It also has some good visual cues for mixing old and new furnishings.
love this book.......2006-07-14
I absolutely love this book. The photos are beautiful! I look at this book so much I guess it is my decorating bible right now haha. If you like Designers Guild fabrics you need to get this book.
Colorful Accessories.......2006-01-13
Like other reviewers, I wondered, where are the "Rooms to Live In" mentioned in the book title.
The photographs in the book are beautiful, clear and quite colorful. Unfortunately, many of the photographs are closeups of things like coffee cups, floral arrangements, pillows, food and clothing, but very few shots of the rooms itself.
If you randomly turned to a page, you would probably get a closeup of something IN the room, but probably no large pictures of the room itself. If you look at the books' cover, you will see two small photos to the side of closeups of coffee cups and flowers, this is an example of the type of photos this book comprises.
Don't get me wrong, the color in the book is really good, the closeups great, BUT it is not a book of rooms. If this was a book of colorful accessories I would give it a 4.5 stars, but because it is supposed to be a decor book and is not, I'm giving it 2 stars. The decor style of the rooms is predominantly modern, contemporary and maybe a retro kind of style.
I think a more appropriate title would have been How to Accessorize your Home with Color or if they had left out the "Rooms to Live In" subtitle it would be fine. I would suggest you check it out of the library before purchasing to see if this is what you are looking for in a decor book.
Finally!! A book for us "outside the box" decorators.......2004-06-18
I will preface this review by saying: If you want a "how to" decorating book, with step by step instructions and perfectly laid out rooms that you can easily duplicate by buying each piece in the book, this book is not for you. If you, like me, are looking for decorating books that are a little outside the box... a book that gives you new, fresh ideas with inspirations stemming from items you aesthetically love (the pearly pink of the inside of a conch shell found on vacation, the smooth sophisticated grey from a river stone) and build a room around it... you have found the book you have been searching for!
Anyone artistic who loves great photography and modern decorating will love this book. What I loved most about Think Color was that the colors and color themes used in this book were not over the top. No bright orange walls with red furniture. The colors were tasteful, modern and very do-able for the average homeowner. Even if you are a renter and cannot alter your wall color, this book gives you PLENTY of ideas for using color in other ways (mainly through use of flowers indoors.)
Particularly helpful is the way the book is organized... by color groupings -- so much easier on the eyes then those books with a different color scheme on each page, in no order whatsoever. I received this book about a week ago and have already gone through it several times, putting post it notes on pages that sparked ideas. This is a modern homeowners dream come true-a book without the stringent guidelines of a decorating book, but packed full of endless ideas for contemporary color and accessories.
Finally, Colorful Modern!!.......2003-03-26
I've been poring through tons of magazines and books, searching for examples of modern style with lots of bold color, and this book has it. It is at the top of my list of sources of inspiration for decorating my new home.
I agree with another reviewer who said that it does not provide basics of color design, and yet another reviewer who claimed it did not have enough about the rooms themselves. The book does offer ideas for bringing color into your living space, through the furnishings, as well as when you entertain.
If you dislike modern styles and bold colors, then don't get this book. It's not for you.
If you are tired of looking at taupes, mochas, chocolates, beiges, creams, grays, "sand", etc., then this book should provide some great ideas for color combinations and ways to infuse your rooms with color.

An interested, informative read if you are the intended audience.......2007-08-24
This book provides a good overview of the various tasks involved with getting into product design. The text is interesting, well laid out, recounts real-world stories of successful product designers, and provides plenty of extras like terminology definitions, checklists, and contact lists. Although the pictures and some of the terminology (such as "World Wide Web") are now a bit dated, the concepts of the industry still seem relevant. It should be noted, however, that the intended audience of this book is graphic designers who want to get into product design. Therefore it focuses on creative, niche products such as toothbrush holders, stationery, and other items that would be sold in gift stores or art museum gift shops. From the introduction, it states that the book "is based on the real-life experiences of thirty graphic designers..." and "will be helpful if you're interested in designing and marketing products which are generally niche market vs. mass market, low tech vs. high tech." If that describes you, this is a pretty good, interesting read!
More than expected.......2002-05-31
I bought that book expecting information about Product Design itself with information about sketches and everything involved in the design. To my surprise I found all the key information regarding Product Develop, as well as a list of contact organizations. Very complete, fully organized, a true guideline for those who -like me- are starting themselves in this issue of Product Design.
How to Break Into Product Design.......2000-12-04
This is a great primer for those interested in getting started in product design and distribution. It would make a wonderful text for an introductory level design course. It is well organized presented in a clear and attractive way.

Citizen Kane
ASIN: 0299205002 |
Book Description
Walking Shadows dramatically dissects the wild, high-profile battle between newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst and famous young actor, director, and filmmaker Orson Welles over Welles’s groundbreaking film Citizen Kane. In 1940 and 1941 it became the center of public controversy and scandal, especially in Hollywood where Welles’s own stark honesty and blatant self-confidence heightened the drama.
Citizen Kane portrayed the ruthless career of an all-powerful magnate bearing (not accidentally) a striking resemblance to Hearst, who immediately tried to kill the picture. John Evangelist Walsh here illuminates the conflict between these two outsize personalities and for the first time brings Hearst’s vengeful anti-Kane campaign to the fore. Walsh provides thorough documentation, supplemental notes, and an extended bibliography.

Darkness At The Edge Of Town.......2005-04-29
Hearst's involvement in the movie industry has been the subject of much recent scholarship. In a way it was bad luck for Orson Welles that the man he wound up attacking in his masterpiece CITIZEN KANE was one of the very few men with the power to avenge himself so thoroughly. For Hearst's tentacles were everywhere. John Evangelist Walsh, a veteran of history's noirish back alleys, has written interesting books before on the treason of Major Andre and the sex life of Emily Dickinson. Hearst apparently saw Welles as a kind of Major Andre and CITIZEN KANE as an attack on everything America holds dear. Incidentally, it was a slanderous, even misogynistic portrait of the talented soubrette Marion Davies, Hearst's girlfriend of many years' standing and practically his "other wife."
Almost a "third wife" was Hearst's hatchet woman--the columnist Louella Parsons who had a contract with Hearst's newspapers and a mission to destroy Orson Welles. Quickly RKO lost faith in their erstwhile "wonder boy" Welles and managed to sabotage his projects THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS and IT'S ALL TRUE, along with several others he had planned, including the thriller SMILER WITH THE KNIFE and a proposed movie version of the Joseph Conrad novella HEART OF DARKNESS. Walsh is the kind of writer who will do just about anything to advance his own thesis, but here he writes crisply and cleanly about the battle between two men who were both, in different ways, quite megalomaniacal. Though the verdict is still out about who was right and who was wrong, CITIZEN KANE still remains one of the towering pinnacles of world cinema; however, the reputation of the slandered Marion Davies has emerged from the Stygian gloom into which KANE had plunged it, and she has rebounded cheerfully into the light of critical regard.
