Book Description
As World War II threatens their comfortable life in Hong Kong, young Joan and Emma Lew escape with their family to spend the war years in Macao. When they return home, Emma develops a deep interest in travel and sets her sights on an artistic life in San Francisco, while Joan turns to movies and thoughts of romance to escape the pressures of her real life. As the girls become women, each follows a path different from what her family expects. But through periods of great happiness and sorrow, the sisters learn that their complicated ties to each other--and to the other members of their close-knit family-are a source of strength as they pursue their separate dreams.

"Dream" is a snooze.......2007-02-19
My book club selected this book because Tsukiyama is one of our favorite authors. Compared to her other novels like Samurai's Garden, Language of Threads and Women of the Silk, Tsukiyama's Night of Many Dreams does not have a compelling story line - mildly interesting, but not a page-turner. It's defintiley not one of her best efforts. Ironically, the title seems to have nothing to do with the tale, except that reading the book might make you snooze.
I enjoyed the book, but not the sequence of events .......2006-12-28
I found this book in a hospital waiting room recently while waiting for a family member receiving a treatment. After about three pages, I was hooked and conned a nurse into letting me borrow it from the hospital.
Overall, the book was well written, interesting, and informative. If it is historically accurate, I learned some things.
One thing that I didn't like about this book was that it jumped around so much. For instance, in one scene, Emma and Jack have their first date and in the next, they are married with a two-year-old child.
I didn't like that the male characters weren't really developed. Hing is always off in another country for work. Joseph's a letch. Chin is elusive. You learn nothing of Wilson's life outside of the Rec Center. Jack is developed pretty well, but then is axed at the end. I knew it was coming, but found it completely unnecessary to kill off Jack's character. That was just wrong.
I found it odd that Joan and Emma have English names when no one else does (in Hong Kong) except for Joseph.
I like Emma's and Joan's characters. Joan is depicted as a strong, stubborn person who can succeed at anything she desires. However, I didn't like it and found it strange that such a strong character was reduced to premarital sex with her director.
That was a really unusual scene. Here's a young woman going into her house after work and her boyfriend drives up saying he needs to speak with her. So, they drive off to his apartment, which seemed like an odd place just to go to "talk." Along the way she thinks that whatever happens, she has no control over. Huh? This is a strong woman, who once fought off an armed soldier and she thinks she has no control over a chat with her boyfriend? That didn't make any sense.
At his apartment, he's so embarrassed about his messy bedroom, that he closes the door. Then, he just picks her up out of the blue mid-discussion, carts her off into the embarrassingly messy bedroom, undresses her, and does the deed without her saying or doing anything. Just bizarre.
Overall, I really liked the book, but would have liked some characters and relationships developed better and to not end when it did.
Tsukeyama delivers through her voice.......2006-10-31
I approached this novel after relishing Tsukeyama's "Women of the Silk" and "The Samurai Garden". After two such masterpieces, I was half-expecting a waning ability to keep fresh story ideas and a slip into banal immigrant themes. As with her other works, I found strikingly-moving interactions between characters and a fluidity which draws one into the scenic location changes of the individuals in the story.
One of Tsukeyama's talents lies in her subtle ability to introduce character traits through tight dialogue and her resistance to pepper the discourses with Asian-sounding metaphors and references. By using the latter sparsely, she paints a more realistic San Francisco, Macao, and Hong Kong, three cities seeking modernity against the pull of traditionalism and sentimentality. I enjoy her choice of time and places, depicting a family's progression over a period which spans several decades beginning with WWII-the most volatile and growth-inspired decades of the Pacific Rim.
Through each of her tales, I imagine Tsukeyama talking to procurement agents with negotiations on upcoming screen adaptations. If not done yet, perhaps she might convince an Asian production company to supervise such films, for they call for more subtle and engaging cinematography than is generally found in blockbuster films.
I can imagine how the story might read if translated into Chinese for an Asian readership. With her formulas and style, Tsukeyama shall continue to breathe beauty into her character-driven stories. Although I read it alone over a Chinese dinner at a restaurant on San Bruno Avenue, it beckons to be shared with another as a corn-cob-piped storyteller might. Try reading this book aloud to a friend, even in English--you will understand what I mean.
I highly recommend this book.
A serene tour de force.......2006-10-20
I was recommended to this book by a friend, and before that, I had never even heard of the author. The plot wasn't intricate nor breathtaking, nor is it the psychological workings of the characters violently stirring. This story of Emma and the years of her childhood to adulthood set with the scenes of boisterous Hong Kong, friendly Macao, and abroad in San Francisco could only be depicted with a style of such grace and candor. Whenever I feel like a rest from the rush of this world, I would pick up another book by Tsukiyama and allow the lightness of her beautiful writing life me up.
Please Refrain.......2006-06-29
I picked up this book because the story looked interesting; little did I know that this book would be so horrible I would put it down in the middle. Good grief! Unfortunately, Gail Tsukiyama has a nasty habit of writing choppy books. She'll touch on one idea for about a page, never really going in-depth, then move on. In addition, the characters all seemed one-dimensional and never convinced me to care about them. As a result, Gail Tsukiyama's work came off as very amateur-ish and unworthy of my time. For good fiction about Asian women, please read some of Amy Tan's older works or Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha.

Gifts of Fortune is a book that revolves around Ryan Fortune and the gifts that he gives to people that are important to him. Each person is important to Ryan for different reasons.
THE HOLIDAY HEIR introduces us to Nico Tan-efi the King of Imarco. Nico saved Ryan from financial disaster, and in return Ryan gives Nico a ring that has the Double Crown inlay. Ryan swears that the ring holds the magical power to make true love survive. Nico can only hope that the mystical power is true and helps him win back his one true love. ... In THE CHRISTMAS HOUSE we are introduced to Jessamine Mitchell and Sebastian Quentin. Ryan feels the need to thank these two people for pulling him out of a burning car and saving his life. Ryan knows that they are both orphans and decides to give them a very expensive house to share. Ryan secretly hopes that the house brings these two strangers together. I was a bit disappointed with the abrupt ending of this story. In MAGGIE'S MIRACLE we finally meet the doctor that saved Ryan's life when somone tried to kill him with poison. Dr. Maggie Taylor never gave up on saving Ryan and in return he gives her two million dollars to help her fund he own research lab. Maggie's sister has a rare blood disorder and with Ryan's money she can afford to open her own research lab. Maggie also hires the best research doctor available, Dr. Elliott Sandwell. Sparks fly when these two get together. I have to admit that I liked Nico's story the best because there was a family connection between him and the Fortunes. The other two stories were okay, but other than Ryan being the one to give them their "gifts" they had no other connection to the Fortune books. I am eager to get back to the Fortune clan with the next book in the series...

Tom Clancy has said of Robert A. Heinlein, "We proceed down the path marked by his ideas. He shows us where the future is." Nowhere is this more true than in Heinlein's gripping tale of revolution on the moon in 2076, where "Loonies" are kept poor and oppressed by an Earth-based Authority that turns huge profits at their expense. A small band of dissidents, including a one-armed computer jock, a radical young woman, a past-his-prime academic and a nearly omnipotent computer named Mike, ignite the fires of revolution despite the near certainty of failure and death.
Book Description
Robert A. Heinlein was the most influential science fiction writer of his era, an influence so large that, as Samuel R. Delany notes, "modern critics attempting to wrestle with that influence find themselves dealing with an object rather like the sky or an ocean." He won the Hugo Award for best novel four times, a record that still stands. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress was the last of these Hugo-winning novels, and it is widely considered his finest work.It is a tale of revolution, of the rebellion of the former Lunar penal colony against the Lunar Authority that controls it from Earth. It is the tale of the disparate people--a computer technician, a vigorous young female agitator, and an elderly academic--who become the rebel movement's leaders. And it is the story of Mike, the supercomputer whose sentience is known only to this inner circle, and who for reasons of his own is committed to the revolution's ultimate success. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is one of the high points of modern science fiction, a novel bursting with politics, humanity, passion, innovative technical speculation, and a firm belief in the pursuit of human freedom.
Customer Reviews:
Reviewing the story, not the reader.......2006-01-16
TANSTAAFL - "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch!" - Motto of the Lunar Colony residents
This isn't a lunch, it's a banquet. I've read just about all of Heinlein's books - many of them several times - starting at about age nine, and this is easily my favorite. If you want lots of adventure, this details a revolution by Lunar prisoners/colonists (think of Australia's origins). If you want character development, how about a computer that, in a believable way, comes to life?! If you want depth, how about the thinking and planning of a group of intelligent men and women, who review (and mostly discard) numerous theories of how to successfully revolt against an oppressor, as well as how to build a rational post-revolution government that emphasizes freedom AND responsibility. And, behind it all, you have the Loonies with their Anglo-Russian dialect and their wonderful customs and mores (many of which we should adopt immediately).
This book is fast, fun reading, and yet there is a richness that is not always present in Heinlein's writing. Contrast this with "Methuselah's Children" which impresses me as a quickie that Heinlein wrote to satisfy the market and his publisher. Heinlein put thought into "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress," and it will make you think. You will also come away cherishing freedom more than many do (we tend to take it for granted).
P.S.: The men's attitudes toward women are chauvinistic at times. Keep in mind when the book was written and when the author grew up.

For his many finely-crafted novels, Robert A. Heinlein has been hailed as the master of science fiction. His detailed stories of future politics and society create unforgettable visions of the ways technology can shift the basic tenets of life.
"The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress" takes you to the moon in 2075. Working to produce wheat for earth, lunar residents live like sharecroppers, kept prisoners of the mother planet by a tight web of control. But a small group of dissidents a technician, a wise old professor, a beautiful blonde, and Mike the supercomputer are planning a revolution that will change this relationship forever.
Robert A. Heinlein won four Hugo Awards and countless other honors during his lifetime. This novel is considered by many to be his greatest work, rich with imagination and humor. Now, bringing the rhythms of lunar talk-talk to your ears, George Wilson's narration draws you into the ranks of these spirited revolutionaries.
"Robert A. Heinlein may have been the all-time most important write of genre science fiction." The Science Fiction Encyclopedia
Library Journal praises "Narrator George Wilson's clear toned voice and engaging delivery..."

Book Description
Popol Vuh, the Quiché Mayan book of creation, is not only the most important text in the native languages of the Americas, it is also an extraordinary document of the human imagination. It begins with the deeds of Mayan gods in the darkness of a primeval sea and ends with the radiant splendor of the Mayan lords who founded the Quiché kingdom in the Guatemalan highlands. Originally written in Mayan hieroglyphs, it was transcribed into the Roman alphabet in the sixteenth century.
This new edition of Dennis Tedlock's unabridged, widely praised translation includes new notes and commentary, newly translated passages, newly deciphered hieroglyphs, and over forty new illustrations.

Popol Vuh - Myth or Truth ?.......2007-03-09
First time i read this book, it was for me like reading the book dedicated to children. I can't understand meaning and story line. So i put it away for a while. I focused on 2012 books mainly afterwhile, it shocks me, how i could been so blind !
Why ? You ask ?
Because as far as i understand well, this english translation of spanish translation of original book describes several "EVENTS". I mean the major ones. It tells us about the "sky events" "god events" (sometimes god means star/sun/planet) and fighting between gods represent tha actual stars/planet/sun position. Describes the daily/weekly/monthly cycles. Tries to explain what is the "Great cycle"
So i took this book again and read it for second time (with all my knowleadge about the ancients) and it is pretty fascinating afterward.
I suggest to read it first time like i did, like normal story, than start to investigate and you will be suprised "What is deep in it".
-keep it readin'-
Great edition of an essential world text - lots of helps.......2005-04-22
The Maya did not divide their everyday lives and religion. In fact, they didn't have a religion in our sense at all. Their everyday lives were bound up in visions, stories of the heavens, earth, past, and future that were not separate from the reality of their everyday experience. This book, the "Popol Vuh" means Council Book. That is, it is a book for the Lords to consult. One of its other titles is "The Light That Came From Beside the Sea". It is a document of the Quiche Maya who lived (and still live) in a portion of what is present day Guatemala.
The "Popol Vuh" tells the essential myth of the ball game and the hero twins. Its story is far too involved and strange to try and explain it in this review. The story explains things about the Sun, Moon, and Venus in their play across the heavens. It prepares the living for what awaits them in Xibalba (the awful place below the earth). And there is constant gratitude for the knowledge of the creation of men from maize and the light of understanding this book brings them. The various sacred places of mountains, caves, and of ritual sacrifice are all here and powerfully expressed.
Dennis Tedlock translated the text into clear and very readable English. However, that is not sufficient for the uninitiated to understand. So, Tedlock provides us with an introductory essay to help us understand the context of these stories. At the back he also provides notes on the text arranged by page number, a glossary of terms (which we desperately need to read the book), a wonderful bibliography for further reading, and an index.
Now, a couple of things to keep in mind when you read this book (and you should). This text has one written source, and it is written in the Mayan language with a Western alphabet. Also, this copy is post Conquest so there is no real way to know how the story was changed or influenced by the Christian stories that were also (forcibly) taught to the Maya, if at all. If you end up believing that this story is an intact retelling of the true Myth without Christian influences, there are some pretty strange and wonderful parallels. If you are uncomfortable with some of the parallels, then you will want to explain them away by claiming corruption by the Christian conquerors. Take your pick. No one really knows.
Terrific edition of an important text that you can really enjoy reading and adding to your understanding of the world and the total range of the human experience.
The Greatest Work of the Americas' Greatest Civilization!.......2005-04-16
I cannot heap enough praises on this book. Bravo!
This book is an English edition of a transliteration into latin letters of the Popul Vuh: the sacred religious and wisdom text of the Maya. It was studied by Mayan leaders, and recited aloud to the people. Everyone knew the stories. In the original books, there were many glosses, anecdotes and images elaborating upon the text; and in this English edition, the author has provided us with just these same sorts of things, including beautiful mysterious Mayan art on nearly every page. I absolutely love Mayan civilization's artwork, architecture, script and it's greatest story; they appeal to me profoundly on a deep aesthetic level. Mayan civilization seemingly had so much mystery and excitement. They even had stadiums where thay watched sporting contests! This book opens up this whole civilization to us and allows us to get intimate with it. And, for those of us living in the Americas, this is the greatest work of literature of our greatest ancient civilization!!! It's human value is inestimable; and it still contains lots of wisdom for us, if we are willing to learn from it. It was the book of kings, and now it is ours!
Customer Reviews:
Weird and weirder.......2006-06-23
This book is an English rendition of an ancient text known as the Popol Vuh, the Mayan equivalent of the Bible. The story describes the creation of the world, as known to the Mayans, and of nature, man, and civilization. The authenticity of this story is unknown, as there is very few copies of the original text, and they were published in a Western alphabet (Latin I believe) after the Spanish conquest of Central America. Hence the amount of corruption due to conversion from the Mayan language to a Western one, and due to socio-political pressures of the Spanish presence is unknown.
Taken at face value, the story told in this book is quite interesting. It tells of creatures both known and unknown (supposedly), gods, and humans with abilities that are of course supernatural. The protagonists are two men; brothers we are told. They travel thru early nature, which of course resembles tropical Central America, and encounter a series of challenges and diversions. These brothers are the first men, according to this story, so they actions they do forecast many features of Mayan culture, such as the ballgame, and the daily interplay with nature at the physical and spiritual levels.
I read this book as part of a history class. I found this book quite interesting, though it will probably confuse many Western readers. But I recommend it as a way to expand your horizons and get to know how others think of their past.

A beautiful book with lots of information!.......2003-02-10
I really enjoyed reading Dolls' Houses. This book is well organized and easy to read with a large number of beautiful color photos. The authors are obviously experts on the styles of doll houses through the past centurys. The presentation of doll houses starts with the 1600's all the way up to the present time. I highly recommend this fascinating book!
Book Description
Noted textile designer and lichen expert explains how to create and use dyes derived from lichens. Text covers history of the use of lichen pigments, safe dyeing methods, ecologically sound dyeing, and use of mordants, lichen identification, more.
Customer Reviews:
Academic Abstract.......2006-08-12
Deep and solid information, Casselman knows her lichens and seems to have devoted a lifetime to their study. That said this is a book for the trivia buff and the very serious dyer. You will learn more than you thought possible about lichens and their role in history. You will be able to dye with lichens, but you will have to have large expensive Field Guides in order to identify the lichens as in this book all you get is the Latin name. A small tome with loads of information that works witout the nasties -tin, chrome and copper
Good guide, but not for complete beginners.......2004-03-22
This is a decent guide to dying with lichens. It is a very condensed presentation of the author's academic and practical research on the topic over many years. In terms of topics considered, the book is quite varied. It begins with a preface on ethical collecting of lichens. Next comes 10 common questions about dying with lichens covering such topics as "Will lichen dyes fade?", "How many lichens does it take to dye something?", and "How can I avoid collecting rare lichens by mistake?". Following this are short chapters on the history of lichen dyes in Asian, European, and American cultures. Then there is a very practical chapter describing in detail methods and recipes for lichen dyes, together with a list of common lichens used for dyes, grouped by dye method, and specifying final colors that can be achieved. One of the author's pet topics is ecodyeing, and she has developed techniques for dying that are less harmful to the environment than traditional methods, and she devotes a chapter to describing some of her alternatives. The last full chapter covers ethics of lichen dying and lichen identification. The book ends with a 15 page annotated bibliography. There is also an index. The only photographs in the book are the ones printed inside the front and back covers.
Overall, I found this book to be clear and very well researched. I'm quite fond of lichens, but I have no background in the dyeing field. The author seems to forget how little some of her readers, such as myself, may know about natural dyes. She uses words like "mordant" without definition. Certainly, if you are already an experienced dyer, such words and their corresponding concepts will already be familiar to you. But if you are a rank beginner like myself, you might want to find another, more basic book, or seek some instruction before trying out the instructions in this one.
The author works exceptionally hard in this book to convince readers that lichen collecting for making dyes is not necessarily a bad thing. Again, she overlooks the fact that some readers may come to her book completely unfamiliar with the controversy that she is trying to argue with. To make the issues more clear for the reader, it might have been useful to lay out the arguments against collecting lichens explicitly, enumerating explicitly what kinds of environmental costs may be involved. Her advice to lichen collectors sounds valid, however. She stresses above all, looking for "found" lichens, lichens that have blown off or become detached from their substrates and are lying on the ground, or collecting from sites that have been recently logged and consequently have great quantities of detached lichens on the ground. She also cautions against lichen collecting in groups, or taking more than 10% of a single lichen species from any one location. One obvious point that she makes is that you should consider your color needs carefully before you make your dye pot- -for example, there is no need to use lichens to make a simple brown dye, since browns can be had so easily from other materials. She also points out that you don't need to fill your pot with specimens from just one species- -think about the color you are trying to achieve, and you can mix lichens of different species to get that color. If you follow her recommendations, it sounds quite plausible to be able collect lichens ethically, and using her instructions, you should have some success with your dyes.

A delightful, helpful book.......2006-08-15
After reading the widely disparate reviews, I got a copy from the library. I found the book to be delightful and helpful, and I have ordered a copy to own. I lead a complex life, producing beautiful, organized work but leaving debris around me as drafts, printouts, and other papers accumulate. The author is very understanding of the thought processes and problems of Accumulators and Paper Pilers. Her humor makes the task of organizing and disposing less of a chore. As a person with some ADD difficulties, often overwhelmed by distractions, I find her methods of working on little parts of a problem a big help.
Take it bit by bit.......2005-07-18
Clutter is often a result of having a busy life. Hence, it wouldn't make sense for a book intended to help you clear clutter to involve a lot of your time. The book is designed of short but extremely helpful tips, so that you can read only a little bit and take 15 minutes to fight clutter. In other words, it helps you keep from being overwhelmed by the daunting task of clearing your stuff. I've always been. and always will be, a packrat, but I'm a more organized packrat now.
Stands Well Above Others Like It.......2005-02-28
This book really changed my ideas about decluttering my life. It has great mix of psychological motivation and practical how-tos. After reading it front to back, I go back and pick it up to read specific sections every now and then. This book is practical, a fun read and helped me change my home for the better.
Cut the Clutter, Stow the stuff.......2004-03-10
I believe this book to be very helpful. IF you are not impaired in the ways of organization, then of course this book would have useless ideas for people who already know them. For those of us with this problem of not knowing how to organize, this book is great. It showed me how to organize space more efficiently, gave me a different outlook on how to use different rooms in my home and gave me some resources for what to buy for cabinets, closets and entryways. It is VERY helpful and full of all different advice in the way of organization. IT points out the psychological reasons we hoard things,,,,what type of clutter person you are and with that information helps you fight the habits that got you to the place where you needed to buy the book in the first place. Reading the other reviews, I believe them to unfairly put this book on a low level, seems maybe these people did not need the help to begin with??? It helps...it has major ideas and a lot of them in an easy to grasp format that is easy and pleasurable to read.
cut the clutter don't buy this book.......2004-02-20
I bought this book while I was living in America and have just gotten around to reading it.I wish I had not ,the pages are badly set out with to many side bars making it a pain to read .Also there is not enough good information in it to make it worth buying.A note to the editor if you produce this book for the British market you want to use another word than Tosser this is not a nice word over here and may offend some people.

Book Description
A handsome collection of rare pin-ups from the late cartoonist who defined Betty & Veronica's look.
For nearly half a century, Dan DeCarlo was the Archie comic book artist. Credited with creating the all-girl band Josie and the Pussycats, DeCarlo's rendition of Riverdale's teenage populace entertained and influenced generations of young people as he guided the characters through their often goofy trials and tribulations. Without a doubt, however, DeCarlo is best known for defining the look of every adolescent boy's wet dreams, Betty and Veronica, with their trademark upturned noses, tight sweaters, and barely-there mini-skirts.
Next to the innocence that was Riverdale, however, and unbeknownst to many, DeCarlo also populated another world, which he filled with cartoons featuring girls in lingerie (and sometimes less), and often bearing an uncanny resemblance to his perennial blonde next door and rich-bitch socialite. From 1956 to 1963, DeCarlo produced hundreds of pin-up cartoons for the Humorama line of girlie digests, where his line drawings and exquisite ink-wash paintings shared the pages with Jack Cole, Bill Ward, and Bill Wenzel, and photos featuring Bettie Page.
Following The Glamour Girls of Bill Ward and The Classic Pin-Up Art of Jack Cole, Fantagraphics continues its dedication to showcasing the best of the classic pin-up cartoon artists. Culling through thousands of Humorama digests, Editor Alex Chun has selected the best of DeCarlo's ink wash pin-up work, with many featuring captions by Marvel Comics' Stan Lee. Along with collecting hundreds of long out-of-print images, the book also features an introductory essay by long time DeCarlo friend and current Bongo Comics creative director Bill Morrison.

Knockout babes from the quintessential Betty and Veronica artist.......2007-07-22
Dan DeCarlo is considered by many comics fans to be the quintessential Archie artist -- and considered by all comics fans to be the best delineator of Archie's rival girlfriends, Betty and Veronica. DeCarlo, who died in 2001, also had a prolific career as a pin-up artist for humor magazines, and this little tome collects some of his best work from the late 50s and early 60s. DeCarlo had a knack for making his women appear funny and sexy at the same time. While most of the gags aren't much, the girls are simply TOO much. There's some (relatively tasteful) nudity here, but most gags involve skimpy clothing and lingerie, so I'd rate this between a PG-13 and a "soft" R.
And you thought Betty and Veronica were cute! .......2007-04-10
The Pin-Up Art of Dan DeCarlo is an absolutely gorgeous collection of work from 1956 through 1963, when the cartoonist was at the peak of his powers.
For those who came late, Dan DeCarlo got his cartooning start working at Timely (later Marvel) Comics drawing such fare as Millie the Model and Sherry the Showgirl for Stan Lee. From the late 50s into the 90's, DeCarlo was the quintessential Archie artist, best known for his work on the daily Archie comic strip and his definitive depictions of the yin and yang of Riverdale sexuality, Betty and Veronica. Millions of adolescent boys felt peculiar stirrings while reading about the exploits of the wealthy brunette and the wholesome blonde (particularly while engaging in their titular Summer Fun... no pun intended).
The discovery years later that DeCarlo was moonlighting as a girlie cartoonist for the Humorama line of men's magazines was, for some fanboys, the sociological equivalent of the discovery of the early nude photos of Madonna or Vanessa Williams. As sexy as Betty and Veronica were, they were chaste (to Archie's eternal frustration). The women DeCarlo drew for Zip, Joker and Laugh Riot were not innocent. And they were often naked.
While DeCarlo's drawings of men came in all shapes and sizes, critics charge that all of his women looked exactly alike, with the same rounded face, turned-up nose and hourglass figure; That the only differing feature was the hairstyle. It's a valid point, but in the end it doesn't matter. It's like criticizing the Ramones for recording the same song over and over. Yeah, they did. And better than anyone else.
DeCarlo's art was pure cartooning, clean and distinctive, with a masterful line and a sense of design that rivalled anyone's. He drew clothes better than almost any cartoonist this side of Hank Ketcham (not that there's a lot of sartorial evidence in this book) and his comedic timing was exemplary.
The Pin-Up Art of Dan DeCarlo (compiled by Alex Chun and Jacob Lovey) is beautifully printed in a black and orange two toned scheme, mostly full page cartoons with some devoted to detail from the art. There are a few problems. An out of place pin-up drawn by DeCarlo in 2000 awkwardly stretches across two pages near the end of the book, none of the cartoons are dated or annotated and the text for the gags has been redone, but those are minor complaints (the absolutely hideous sliced lettering used for the title of the book is unforgiveable, however). This book is indispensible for anyone who loves pin-up art, beautiful cartooning.... or ever wanted to see Betty and Veronica naked.
Not that I ever thought about that.
A very entertaining piece of comic book history.......2007-03-28
I had heard of Dan DeCarlo from the older Archie Comics and was surprised to see that he had done more provocative works in other magazines. His art style was the basis for the female characters in Archie's gang, and has been imitated many times since. There are a LOT of his older single-panel gags from several adult magazines. If you like nice artwork and nicely-drawn woman, it's a must have!
Humor of olden still golden.......2005-12-17
I just love this stuff. For every time our parents claim how properly they were brought up, there is a cartoon in this book that reminds me that they were every bit as bawdy as we are today. They just had better taste about it. This book starts with a history that isn't all that much to read and then single panel cartoons each page. The art is what it is and the jokes are the ones we've been retelling for years so it must be good stuff.
The Pin-up Art of Dan DeCarlo.......2005-08-06
The beginning of the book has the story of Dan DeCarlo and how he got into doing comic books of Archie, Veronica, Betty, Jughead also some of the other comic books for adults. It then contains drawings of Betty and Veronica when they are grown women and out on their own. Also contains funny panels showing the girls and their dates with words explaining their predicaments and also Archie with some "sticky situations" I am always interested in the artist and his work.
Book Description
Oh, Betty! Pin-up beauties from the legendary Archie artist and creator of Josie & the Pussycats.
For more than 40 years, Dan DeCarlo was best known for his definitive rendition of Archie Comics' Betty and Veronica, two of comics' most beloved icons.
But before joining Archie in the late 1950s and unbeknownst to many, DeCarlo was already honing his skills as a good girl artist for the Humorama line of digest magazines. Beginning in 1956, DeCarlo created hundreds of pin-up cartoons for titles such as Comedy, Jest, and Laugh Riot, where his line drawings and his exquisite ink-wash paintings shared the pages with pin-ups by Jack Cole, Bill Ward and Bill Wenzel, and photos featuring Bettie Page.
In contrast to the innocence that was Archie's Riverdale, DeCarlo's Humorama pin-ups portrayed a world populated by strippers, gold diggers, buxom secretaries, lecherous bosses, cheating spouses, and even the occasional "spanking daddy." These characters, who often bore an uncanny resemblance to Archie's snooty socialite and perennial girl next door, were clearly having sex and plenty of it.
Following the immensely popular The Pin-Up Art of Dan DeCarlo (which was featured in Playboy magazine and quickly sold out its first printing), this second volume once again displays DeCarlo's sexiest Humorama pin-up cartoons, and continues Fantagraphics' dedication to showcasing the best of the classic pin-up cartoonists.

Book Description
Paul "Mousie" Garner's career as a stooge (a "fall guy" or "assistant" to the head clown) began in vaudeville, when he and his partner were firing off jokes and one-liners, as well as leaping over oil-drums. Another part of the act, which could run as often as five times a day, involved Garner's getting smashed over the head with breakable ukeleles. His big break came when he was hired as a replacement stooge by Ted Healy, who had just parted ways with the soon-to-be famous "Three Stooges." In fact, it was Healy who came up with the nickname "Mousie" because Garner was always so jumpy, nervous and quick. The name stuck, and Mousie would go on to form "The Rollicking Mousie Garner Trio," join the "New Stooges," and work steadily in radio, television, theater, clubs and movies.

I love this book.......2001-11-10
This book explains about the "lost Stooges that very few know about. Great!
No stooging around; this is great stuff!.......1999-09-04
Paul "Mousie" Garner relates a wonderful story of life in vaudeville, working with Ted Healy as a stooge (along with Dick Hakins and Jack Wolf [Warner's father]), Spike Jones, and much more.
Of particular interest is the time he spent with Ted Healy as one of the replacement Stooges in the 1930s. Fans of Moe, Larry, Shemp and Curly will love it!
I'm proud to call Mousie my friend, and I'm delighted to see him take this opportunity to share his life with fans and students of comedy.
Read this book!
Stooge fans will enjoy.......1999-07-04
I'm not quite sure what to make of good ol' Mousie. Many of "his" recollections exactly mirror stories that Moe Howard wrote about in his great autobiography, MOE HOWARD & THE 3 STOOGES. It's obvious that Mousie greatly greatly enjoyed recounting the highlights of his career, especially if one counts how many times he pats himself on the back during the course of the book. Still, the parts of the book focusing on Ted Healy and his various Stooges are always interesting reading. There's no doubt Stooges fans will get the most enjoyment out of the book.
Very well-written vaudeville memoirs.......1999-02-22
This long-awaited book is a must-have for fans and researchers of vaudeville-style comedy. Mousie worked with all the greats, in particular Ted Healy, the man who started The Three Stooges, and with Spike Jones, the master of musical mayhem. Mousie tells all about his own years in show-biz, with many funny and interesting anecdotes about the people he's known and worked with. Highly recommended!
The book is incredible reading about one of the Stooges.......1998-12-29
This book tells the life story about one of the unknown Stooges. This book is about the good, the bad and the stupid. The guy is 89 years old and is the last remaining member of Ted Healey's Stooges. This book literally was years in the making and is a very thorough account of what his incredible life as a veteran comedian was like in the early years of this century. He has appeared in several T.V. shows such as Surfside Six,77 Sunset Strip and others as well as a regular on the Spike Jones Show. Good luck Mousie.
