Book Description
Science and mysticism, nature and greed collide in this mind-bending, compulsively readable thriller from the author of Tropic of Night and Valley of Bones, hailed by the Washington Post as "miracles of intelligent fiction . . . among the essential novels of recent years."
Deep in the jungles of Colombia, an American priest is shot dead in his makeshift church.
A few weeks later an Indian shaman called Moie arrives in south Florida, armed only with a bag of totems and the fearsome power of Jaguar, his god.
In Miami, retired detective Jimmy Paz, his wife, and his seven-year-old daughter are plagued by dreams of giant jungle cats that haunt both their sleeping and waking hours.
When affluent Miami businessmen begin to die in gruesome fashion, the local police are baffled by the lack of clues -- other than the massive, catlike footprints that appear at the scene of each murder. They turn to Paz, famous throughout the city for cracking open two previous, impossible-to-solve cases, and for reasons he doesn't dare share, he agrees to come out of his self-imposed retirement to track the killer.
As Paz investigates, Moie finds refuge with a group of ecologically minded activists who treat the strange little man as a pet until they find out exactly what mission brought him to the United States and that it's somehow connected to the grisly murders that are occurring with frightening regularity. The deeper Paz digs into the case, the closer to home the danger gets: his investigation opens the door to his mysterious and shocking past and he slowly begins to realize that the dreams he and his family are having could mean the death of his beloved daughter. To save her life -- and his own -- he must reach into the deepest corners of his soul and find the strength to hold fast against the irresistible pull of the spirit world.
Only Michael Gruber is capable of combining heart-stopping action with a ferociously intelligent examination of what makes us human, in novels that have been praised as "bold . . . provocative, and frightening" (USA Today) and "dazzling, literate and downright scary" (Cleveland Plain Dealer). Night of the Jaguar is an unforgettable blend of imagination, suspense, and thought-provoking inquiry into the nature of good and evil.

Plausibly supernatural & a fine character-driven mystery.......2007-06-05
Nobody has done a better job of bringing the "lost" supernatural dimension of primitive folk magic and religion into the modern mystery/thriller world than Michael Gruber. He has a deep and sympathetic understanding of what we secular Westerners might regard as "alternative belief systems," and he manages to seamlessly juxtapose witchcraft, Santeria, etc., with utterly plausible crime and violence plotlines. Additionally, few authors in the thriller genre can match Gruber's ability to flesh out characters -- even bit players -- in three dimensions. By now it's well-known that Gruber is the ghostwriter responsible for the first 13 crime novels "authored" by his cousin, Robert K. Tanenbaum, which are among the very best of the genre. I will read anything he writes.
Plus one star for the CD audiobook.......2007-04-03
Night of the Jaguar is smooth and fast and consistently entertaining. In this review I want to take special note of Jonathan Davis' audio performance.
I have heard more than a hundred audiobooks. It is a distinct art form. Davis is the best reader I have ever heard. Each character in the large cast has a clearly identifiable speaking voice, precisely appropriate to age, gender, background, and ethnic origin. The voices never bleed into the narration, nor vice versa. Even sound effects - in this case, the menacing breathy growl of the Jaguar - are perfect.
Congratulations to Michael Gruber for a fine, intelligent supernatural mystery, and to Jonathan Davis for a performance that captures it in living color.

The lines of reality become blurred in this latest addition to Michael Gruber's series of thrillers with Cuban detective Jimmy Paz.
Jimmy Paz is happy with his decision to leave the Miami PD and work in his mother's restaurant, more time to spend with his doctor wife and his precocious 7 year old daughter Amelia. He is not readily willing to be drawn into his ex-partner's newest case when Cuba businessmen are murdered. But when the dreams of he and his family about a jaguar begin to eerily parallel the rumors that a large cat is responsible for the deaths, he becomes immersed in solving the crimes.
Moie has hidden in the hold of a ship to Miami from his jungle to confront the people he has been told are trying to destroy his rainforest home. Soon after he lands he meets up with Jennifer and her group of activists, The Forest People. All of a sudden saving the rainforest is more than just a vague cause. And when Paz realizes Moie is tracking his daughter Amelia and worships the jaguar, Moie is more than just an interesting curiosity.
This the third book in Gruber's trilogy with Jimmy Paz. While the story of Moie and the jaguar is intense, it is Paz's struggle to try to reconcile between his doctor wife's firm insistence on reality only and his mother's Santeria beliefs that makes the story take hold. Jimmy's willingness to put aside his previous differences with his mother, even after learning her shocking secret, to protect his daughter from an unseen, unbelievable enemy makes the story take heart.
This thriller's strength is its main characters that are convincing, even within the paranormal plot line. While the added plots lines of greed, misuse of the earth and the plight of foster children tangle themselves through out the novel, it is the characterizations that keep the story from unraveling.
Character-Driven Suspense.......2006-07-21
What makes this book different from lots of others in this genre is the extremely well-drawn characters and their distinctive world views. Jenny is a particularly engaging character as she slowly begins to appreciate the fact that she's smarter and tougher than she ever thought she was. By the way, another reviewer commented on Paz's wife suddenly being named "Lola"... but in "Valley of Bones", this was a nickname Paz called her which has obviously stuck now that they're several years married.
Can't wait for this writer's next book.
Clark, where do you leave your suit and tie?.......2006-04-28
When I was a little boy, journeying through black and white TV, Marvel comics, and how come Mom didn't wear high heels and stockings when she made me and Dad breakfast like Mrs. Cleaver, I also wanted to know when Clark Kent became Superman, where did he leave his 2 piece summer suit from Barney's? Shouldn't this have been an issue the screenwriters should have seen coming and explained to the viewing public? This was not a solid basis in which to develop a yearning for supernatural works of fiction. I can handle the ghost of Hamlet's father. I have trouble with small men transmorphing into 500 pound predators.
OK. I'm having a little fun here and this is an excellent novel. You just need time to read it. It's not an airplane read, maybe not even a vacation read. Like LeCarre, Mr. Gruber demands of his readers an intention to work at what he is saying.
Jimmy Paz remains one of the best characters around. He reminds me of Lorenzo Brown. the 'Dogman' of George Pelecanos fame. I especially like where Gruber has transformed him from a rakish Cuban detective in Miami with an edge to a loving father. The relationship he shares with his 7-year old daughter is warm and affectionate.
I enjoyed Tropic and Valley of Bones tremendously and this falls short of those earlier works. I also enjoyed Lorna, Jimmy's wife in earlier works with her hypochondria and weight issues, however here there is virtually no Lorna. Paz' Mom is a hoot. And the new characters of Jenny and Cooksey are fascinating, odd and enjoyable.
I guess Night didn't "grab" me. I didn't feel compelled to keep reading it. I'll give you an example. We reviewers use this phrase but I believe it probably doesn't really happen but maybe one in ten times. This past weekend I picked up Robert Crais' new work, The Two Minute Rule. I literally could not put it down. All books can't have that quality but I didn't find any of that in Night of the Jaguar. Interesting? Yes. Worthwhile? Yes. Magnetic, riveting and relentless? No. I'll certainly read Mr. Gruber again however Night wasn't up to the standards he set for himself. 4 stars. Larry Scantlebury

Customer Reviews:
Laugh out loud fluff.......2006-07-18
This is not the usual strong writing from Ms. Metzger but if you want something quick and fun to read - this would be it. This is pure fluff and wonderfully hilarious ... thus the four stars. This is not a book to be read somewhere quiet; too many great laughs.
The hero - Ace, who is an Earl - is a rather disappointing character. He seems to think running away from his problems is the way to solve them ... though to be fair, I too might run away if I had three people claiming (at the same time) that I was their fiancé. Ace has all of the power, wealth, and privilege of his position, and yet he is almost childish in the way he handles things. He has some wonderfully hilarious bits which will have readers snickering and chuckling (if not actually laughing out loud). These are what save the character from being a complete disappointment.
The heroine - Nell - is a bit stronger and typical of the era. Ms. Metzger makes too many references to the fact Nell is thin; it grows tiresome after the first few times. She is your usual Regency spinster with the miserly brother who keeps her at home for his own selfish reasons. The saving grace for Nell's character are the laugh-out-loud parts which are truly marvelous.
There are several flaws in the story. One of the most obvious is when Nell suddenly becomes "Lady Bountiful" to the tenants. She breaks into her brother's strong box whilst he is absent and uses the funds to help effect repairs and other things which were needed for quite some time but of which she was not aware. How could Nell not realize these problems existed when she, at times, collects rent and goes to these cottages? A roof does not fall into disrepair in a few months - even if it is thatched.
Cast of characters includes Ace, Nell and her goose, Nell's pinch-penny brother, her aunt (who talks to the spirit world), a Duke's daughter (fiancée wannabe # 1); the Duke's daughter's dog, the Duke, the Earl's mistress (fiancée wannabe # 2), the Earl's neighbor and daughter (fiancée wannabe # 3), the Earl's valet, missing people, and assorted staff from several households.
All in all, this is a good book to read once and share with someone else you know in need of a good laugh. I have not read the others in the series (they are on the way) so cannot comment but will hope they are better written ... if not, then I hope they are as funny.
Had very High expectations.......2006-07-10
After reading other books by Ms Metzger like "The Duel" I was absolutely confident that I would immediately fall in love with this book but I was utterly disappointed.
The book lacked everything I would have like to read in a great book except for it's accuracy for the Genre.
There was absolutely no passion, the plot for the storyline was VERY poorly developed and wanting and I don't believe I have read about a more weak minded and unattractive Hero, who's solution to every problem was to literally pack his bags and run from it.
There was also an older woman in the book who "talked" to ghost which was very irrelevant to the plot. Most of the secondary characters were thrown in I believe the make up the 300 or so pages the book consisted of.
Unfortunately since I'm a sucker for wanting infinity to all my regency romance stories, I also purchased the other two books in this series (Jack/Queen), but I have no intention of reading them anytime soon if this first book is any indication of what to expect. It is my personal opinion that the plot was left under developed and unfinished so that it would lead into the next book in the series, BUT any good author's books in a series should be able to stand alone. This book does not, and it forces you, if you are desperate enough to get it's sequel. Fortunately like I stated before, I always get all books in a series so that I can read them all at once, but unfortunately this first book did not dampen my appetite enough for the follow up.
I have stated this before in my other reviews, when you have read other high quality REGENCY ROMANCE novels, you begin to expect nothing less and unfortunately within the first few pages of a bad novel you are instantly on alert thus destroying any hope of enjoyment.
I wanted to take my frustration of reading books by Elderly authors on Ms Metzger, since the book lack ANY type of passion for a romance novel, but I will be fair and non prejudice by saying this is the first one of her books I've felt this way about and not all Elderly authors are less open to writing about love making in their books.
The review of the book is on the product review page, but don't expect much, this book will be really hard to give a synopsis on because of the weak plot.
Clever, charming, sweet, dear, whimsical...........2006-06-08
I'll admit it: I'm a huge fan of Barbara Metzger.
She probably is the finest author of Regency romances alive today.
Her stories are gentle but very clever, clearly requiring a great deal of research on her part. She is whimsical, she is subtle and she is witty.
ACE OF HEARTS is Metzger at her best.
This romance has everything a reader could want, and more: A hero who is so hero-like that half the women he meets are trying to marry him...a dog who deserves better...and a tender heroine who deserves better, too.
Of course, being Metzger, there is some bite to the plot, involving highwaymen and kidnapping and other dastardly acts. After all, it's a Regency romance and this is very much in keeping with the genre.
Since it is Metzger at the controls, the whole tale is unfolded deftly, and with great restraint. As always, her language and her characterization strike a perfect chord; as always, she exhibits great humor as well.
ACE OF HEARTS is the perfect kick-off book for a romance series.
Fun and Funny.......2006-04-03
It is a pleasure to read a quality written novel where you laugh out loud and enjoy the characters relationship throughout.
In ACE of Hearts you don't have the constant bickering between hero and heroine. Of course there are obstacles, but it is an entertaining ride to the romantic feelings shared by each.
It's refreshing to not have to deal with bickering to the end where they finally get together. I recommend this book and it's follow up in the series, Jack of Clubs.
Barbara Metzger is one of the most talented humor/romance authors I've read.

Which way to go.......2007-02-27
I'm giving this a 4 star, hesitantly, because I enjoyed much of the humor in it (microbrews, Starbucks, WMD) but the story itself was just okay for me. I found it enjoyable enough and liked the subplots and subterfuge going on; however, I also found it highly predictable. I liked the characters presented and yes it is a parody on Hamlet with other stories thrown in but then "Unhandsome Prince" was the same way with fairy tales and I enjoyed it much more. I'm not going to run down the plot as other reviewers have done that for us. The book is good enough to read and doesn't require much thought processing. I loved the cracks on footnotes ala Terry Pratchett, et al. As fantasy parody, it's good enough but the market will continue to draw others into it so Moore needs to step up what he's doing. Of the three John Moore books I've read, 'Heroics for Beginners' is my favorite.
Overall, good enough to read and enjoy even for the average $7 price tag at your local bookstore.
Passable.......2006-12-14
I had read the Unhandsome Prince and I liked it. I thought I would like this as well but I was mistaken.
First of all, it just wasn't funny. It is funny in the way of an acquaintance trying to tell a joke and you smile politely. Storywise there's not much to tell. Bad Prince Charlie gets pulled into the plot by his uncle. He gets tricked by the evil greedy Catherine or whatshername. Him ignoring his ghostly father. Going to the oracle. Things just sort of happen and you go along with it but it's not like you're rooting for him like in a very good book or jeering at him and tossing the book away because it was so bad. The conclusion got wrapped up and I was left dissatisfied. That woman got away with it all. I didn't like her and I didn't like Charlie for helping her get away with it. What kind of guy does that? She tried to trick him for money then tried to get him kill to be in the good graces of the enemy.
All in all, I was able to finish reading the book but I had to push myself because it just wasn't that great. If I had had another interesting book at hand, I'm not sure I might not have been tempted to leave it unfinish.
amusing little riff on Hamlet.......2006-09-20
Another in the growing genre of fantasy parodies, this book is loosely anchored in Hamlet but covers everything from the Oracle of Delphi to bland American beer and Starbucks coffee shops. It is full of "meta-humor" -- jokes about itself and the genre it is part of. Most of them work, but none of them are as shockingly funny as those in a Chris Moore or Douglas Adams book.
As a typical example, consider the scene where Charlie meets the ghost of his murdered father (the former king). Charlie dislikes his dad and is glad to tell him that he is working with his father's murderers. He also warns him that he is not interested in listening to the ghost's story, because he knows the ghost will vanish at dawn just before he reveals some crucial information. And, of course, several pages later, that is exactly what happens, just after the ghost has finally convinced Charlie that he should pay attention to the problem he is worried about.
The humor and the characterization are well done, but unfortunately the plot is a little bit underbaked. It is slow and overly complicated (which could also be said of the plot of Hamlet). The jokes and the plot keep fighting with each other over which element gets to take center stage (unlike, for instance, Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest books, where they are much more symbiotic and complementary).
The book is written for adults and older teens -- younger readers (and those unfamiliar with Hamlet) will miss many of the jokes.
Moore's Weakest, but Passable.......2006-07-11
Of Moore's 3 latest books, this is by far the least entertaining.
The book gets off to a sluggish beginning which I pushed myself to read through (Moore had built up a lot of good-will points from his previous books, and many were spent at the outset of this one) even though my instincts warned me to STOP READING. The pace of the novel did pick up shortly thereafter, but from time to time bogged down once again. In his previous outings Moore used dialogue and action to move the story along, but in this book there are numerous long descriptive passages that add little to the story or humor*. About 1/2 way through the book I recognized that my enjoyment of the book was enhanced if I simply passed the descriptive passages and went to the next bit of dialogue. The story itself is full of double-dealing people playing the Game of Thrones, and there are moments of good humor.
If you're looking for good fun, I recommend reading Moore's other two books first, and then reading this effort.
*Moore's use of footnotes was enjoyable, and if he were to have used more I probably would have enjoyed the book more.
Bad Prince, Good Book.......2006-05-26
What if Hamlet didn't want to become king of Denmark? If Polonius was really on the side of the prince? And Fortinbras had nuclear weapons?
In Bad Prince Charlie Moore does a riff on the Hamlet story, with his tale of a reluctant prince who has to take over the kingdom in order to get work-study credit at college. Along the way the author pokes fun at everything from Kahil Gibran's The Prophet to microbrewed beer. It's a fast and funny story and, in my opinion, his best work so far. While the other stories were inherently predictable (because they were based on fantasy cliches) this one kept me guessing right to the end.
What I particularly like about the 20 Kingdoms series is -- they are not a series! Each one is a stand alone novel. I have grown so tired of discovering a new fantasy author only to find I'll have to wait seven years to learn how his book ends. Or buying volumes one, four, and five but finding that two and three are out of print. Moore is a delightful writer than I don't have to commit myself to.

Yet Another Awsome Book by Sylvia Browne.......2007-05-13
My eyes are wide open and I love the "take it or leave it" approach.
Sylvia has a wonderful way of presenting a very positive message in a world with so many questions and confusion. She makes it SIMPLE.
I love to read all of her books and she is a blessing.
Great book to re-read.......2007-04-12
I have this book in my little library of Sylivia Browne books and I have to say that it's the one book I go back to time and time again. I particularly like the section on famous people. If you are interested in ghosts and want to know what they are all about, this is the book for you.
Love this woman.............2007-04-07
I have yet to read anything by her that
I haven't learned from --or-- been
inspired by. I resonate to her and her
soulful wisdom. I recommend Sylvia to
anyone searching for answers. Very good
resource books to have in ones own
personal library.
Spell-binding.......2007-03-24
The categories and stories are so interesting, its hard to put it down. Some of the images described were very vivid and scary. It makes one believe in many things that cannot be seen. Trust your instincts.
Eye Opener.......2007-03-08
This was the second book of Sylvia's that I have read. It opened my eyes to things I have wondered about for years. Sylvia is truly a genuine person who holds nothing back and is blunt in every situation.

In 1992, our first cookbook, Old-Fashioned Country Christmas Cookbook, was published. Thanks to the letters and recipes you'd shared with us over the years, we got the idea of bringing it all together into one special Christmas cookbook, full of memories, tips and of course, tried & true recipes. It's the book Vickie goes back to every time she needs a little inspiration or that recipe for chicken casserole supreme! It just goes to show, while a little change is good, it's the memories and lasting traditions that always bring us back home to the country.

Best Christmas Book Ever!!.......2001-06-10
I have several of the Gooseberry Patch cookbooks but I have to admit that this is one of my favorites! Mainly because I like reading about the traditions and I will read it all throughout the year. One of the best hints is to help defray the cost of a Christmas tree during the holiday season, we decorate an old coffee container and tape it around the top and throw in all of our loose change all year round and believe me by December you will have enough money to buy a very nice tree and it doesn't seem to hurt the pocket book so much.
Creative food presented in a graphic style I love ---Buy it!.......1999-08-14
Every one of this series is read and enjoyed both for the tasty, homemade, loving recipes but equally for the hand drawn country illustraions. the spiral binding is handy in the kitchen and the cover makes it a cute addition to a shelf or table set up for the holidays.. No I don't work for the company I'm just a long time fan! Great for gifts, too. They are WELL received !
A one of a kind book.......1999-03-01
This book was definitely not a waste of money. It gives ideas for family traditions, homemade gifts, and lots of good recipes. This Gooseberry book would make a good holiday gift for any family member or friend who enjoys homemade items or craft activities.

Yummy Recipes, One of the Best!.......2002-03-17
Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of "Old Fashioned Country Cookies." You are GUARANTEED to love the recipes and cute illustrations. (I recommend the Orange Iced Cranberry Cookies...Yum!) As usual, the Country Friends Vickie & JoAnn put together an excellent country cookbook chock full of Country Memories and excellent recipes for... What else.. Cookies! You can't go wrong with Gooseberry Patch. These books are pure fun and are sure to delight everyone!!!
GOOSEBERRY is the BEST!.......2000-03-23
I own several Gooseberry craft/cookbooks, and do the majority of my cooking from them. I have NEVER been disappointed with any recipe I have made. They are simply the best!
Wonderful practically, visually, and inspirationally.......1999-10-23
This is one of the most "usable" cookie cookbooks I've seen. I collect cookbooks and have a good basis for comparison. Like all the other Gooseberry Cookbooks, the style of composition makes it a fun book to use. I first bought a copy of this book several years ago and didn't really open it up and look at it. When headed to visit our daughter several states away, I was looking for something I could take to her as a gift and saw "Old Fashioned Country Cookies" on the shelf so grabbed it up and gave it to her. Sitting around her kitchen table, I finally had the time to REALLY look at its pages. I'm flipping pages and thinking..."Good grief, WHY did I give this book away...these recipes look fabulous!!" I asked her for some paper and a pen and started jotting down recipes I thought I wanted to try. That proved to be a finger-cramping adventure. I knew I just HAD to purchase another copy. Couldn't let all those gems get away. I did just that and haven't been sorry. It's wonderful to have so many good recipes in one book. It's the first one I reach for when the urge to make cookies pops into my head. I also love the country-style graphics and the hints sent in by Gooseberry readers. If I were trapped on a desert island and could only have one publishers cookbooks, I'd opt for the ones by Gooseberry Patch...they are GREAT! If you order this book, you won't be sorry. And my daughter LOVED it as a gift too!
Fabulous Cookie and Treat Book.......1999-07-29
It is so tough to find a cookie book that has more than one good recipe! This is the book! Every cookie and dessert treat I have made from this book has been a major crowd pleaser. I highly recommend this. It is especially nice as a wedding or shower gift, coupled with cookie cutters and other baking stuff. Delicious all the way around!

10 star Holiday favorite.......2006-12-21
This has become one of my favorite holiday books with many ideas we have actually used. Like making the Orange and cloves pomanders, elegant truffles, various garlands made of gum drops, braided ribbon, bells on ribbon, or small pine cones on ribbon. Something for just about anyone, who like us, celebrates a country or mountain Christmas. Great recipes and information on heirloom collectibles.
Customer Reviews:
Good craft instructions and easy to follow recipes!.......2006-11-29
This book is light on the overall Christmas decorating theme of country home but has excellent instructions for ornament making and food. Nothing about older Christmas decorations. Basically a Better Homes and Garden craft/cook book.

HOW TO MAKE AND SELL GEL CANDLES THAT SELL LIKE WILDFIRE.......2007-10-09
THE BOOK WAS FULL OF VERY USEFULL INFORMATION. VERY EASY TO READ AND FOLLOW THE CANDLE MAKING INSTRUCTIONS. IT WAS VERY DISSAPOINTING THAT NONE OF THE PICTURES WHERE IN COLOR. THEY WERE ALL BLACK AND WHITE. IT IS KIND OF HARD TO SEE WHAT THE CANDLE IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE WITH BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS. I CHECKED OUT AN OLDER ADDITION OF THE BOOK FROM THE LIBRARY...AND THAT ONE HAD FULL COLOR PHOTOS. IT LOOKED AS IF SOMEONE MADE PHOTO COPIES OF THE BOOK AND SOLD IT AT AMAZON.

Customer Reviews:
This book is the worst I've read........2002-10-28
I make candles and export them for a living. I read a lot of wax candle and gel candle making books ... ! It doesn't fit for anyone one at all, be it an amateur or an intermediate level crafter. Believe me, it's best for you to avoid buying this book. It's not worth your money and time reading.
I should have read the reviews.......2002-10-01
I was very disappointed with this book....I saw it listed on the Internet and it was recommended by some of the web sights. The information in this book is on the Internet and the projects are not that great or challenging. The book has eight pages of color picture. I checked many of the suppliers listed in the back of the book and quite a few no longer have web pages. I truly expected more from this book based on all of the hype. I feel your money would be better spent on another book.
You can spend your money better elsewhere........2002-08-05
I was expecting more detailed step by step instructions & full of color photos with lots of inspirations. But instead, most of the info. from the book are knowledge you can get FREE from websites that sell gel candle supplies. There are only a few pages of gel candle examples & they are not too impressive.
The only good thing about the book is that the author has included resource of different suppliers.
I found it so poor!.......2001-12-15
I got really excited when i bought this book, but when i received it i got really disappointed of my purchase, i thought it would be a full colored book, with a lot of pictures to help you and give you some project ideas, but it has just a few of them and has about 10 pictures of candles that are not so amazing, i think you should get another book if you want some ideas for gel candlemaking
What a Great Time Saver!.......2001-05-09
This little book is a wonderful time saver! There is just so much incredibly useful information packed into such a small package. It saves so much time and research in finding sources for all of the various supplies (containers, wax, embeds, etc.) Plus, it has great color pictures and lots of different project suggestions, resources, links and marketing assistance. It will get your imagination going non-stop and really motivate you to get started immediately.

Book Description
In this lavishly illustrated volume, Graham Rust showcases his distinctive vision for every room in the house. The result is both an enchanting world of exotic and colourful interiors and a practical sourcebook of ideas for amateur and professional decorators alike. A must for interior designers and decorative painters, it will inspire anyone who dreams of creating a uniquely beautiful home.
Customer Reviews:
Uninspired.......2001-12-11
The pictures and ideas were fabulous, However, The book lacks any instruction. These creations are not for beginners nor mildly experienced decorative painters.
Useless and frustrating.......2001-08-07
If this had been created and written as a coffee table book designed simply to show how a fine artist created lovely painted finishes, that would be OK. But it is "billed" as an "idea" book for ordinary people. Created by a fine artist who obviously has no clue as to what the rest of us can actually DO, this book is useless and frustrating.
An enjoyable and inspirational book!.......2000-05-13
In this enjoyable volume, English muralist and painter Graham Rust transforms everyday objects into whimisical and unusual works of art. From panelled screens to placemats, headboards to overdoor ornamentation, Rust's highly personal style, occasionally quirky point of view, and amazingly developed illustrative ability shine. Primarily visual, the book does not offer much by way of instruction or technique; nevertheless it is an inspiration. Many of the illustrations could be adapted to other design situations. I particularly appreciate his studies of drapery and exquisitely rendered botanicals. An interesting and useful addition to the reference library of the illustrator, muralist and painter, as well as those in interior design.

Infamous encounters.......2005-10-05
I just read Vickie Rubinson's book "Sorry...Your Name's not on the List," and I got a really good laugh. Ms. Rubinson displays a keen wit and eagle eye when it comes to reporting on her many humerous encounters with everyone from former Nazis in Vienna Austria, to the rich and famous in Beverly Hills California. I finished the book in two days. What's interesting is her interview with former Austrian President Kurt Waldheim on her last trip to Vienna. It's a fascinating story and ends with the disgraced President of the country, giving her a bunch of autographed books. This book is a must read.
Hollywood memoir.......2004-12-19
I loved this book. It's well written, faced paced and humorous. The author talks about her experiences in a comical Catholic school in the San Fernando Valley, (where priests dance the can-can and nuns wax poetic about the mysteries of life), to the strange world of tabloid reporting.
There are numerous encounters with Hollywood celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Arnold, Anna Nicole Smith and Harvey Keitel to name a few, plus some run ins with famous and infamous politicians and lecherous diplomats.
If you ever wondered what it's like working the tabloid world, this book is for you.
Funny childhood memoir.......2004-10-12
I loved this memoir! It was well-written, insightful and touching. The author takes us on a wild tour from her early childhood days as the only Jewish girl in a Catholic school, to her 20's as a Hollywood reporter.
St. Christopher's prep school is the setting to this book. The teachers are whacky and the priests and nuns all seem like they came right out of central casting. This is a must read!!!!
The Life and Times of a Hollywood Reporter.......2004-08-28
This book has it all...encounters with aging ex-Nazis in Vienna Austria, to minor run-ins with mysterious Saudi princes. I couldn't put the book down. It's the story of Hollywood reporter Vickie Rubinson's comical life, from her upbringing at a strict Catholic School in Los Angeles, (where she was thrown in the trash can by her beloved English teacher), to the crazy world of Hollywood reporting...where she was chased down the tree lined streets of Bel Air by Priscilla Presley's Doberman's. It's a real page turner!
Catholic School Capers.......2004-08-25
Sorry Your Name's not on the List is a past paced breezy memoir that takes readers on a wild and crazy ride through the halls of a Valley prep school where stern priests suddenly break into musical numbers in the middle of class, and smoking nuns wax poetic about the mysteries of life-to the offices of Private Eye Magazine in Hollywood, where the main character is sent on some pretty harrowing tabloid assignments.
The stories are short and comical and yet very believable. It was a real page turner and gave me a few good chuckles.
