Book Description

Five-way Love Story & Mystery.......2007-10-08
I liked this story about a new western town starting up and people coming to make a fresh start. The theme is not to hold wrongs of parents against their children. It is a light, quick read and very entertaining. I recommend this book to anyone who likes westerns.
Sweet.......2005-12-25
It was simple yet illuminative writing which led me to nearly read this book in one sitting. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It was a sweet romance. Don't go here if you are searching for sensuality.
Rustic Homespun Appeal. .......2005-09-06
I have yet to be disappointed in a Dorothy Garlock book. It seems every time I decide to read this gifted author, she impresses me further. Simply put: THE LISTENING SKY is a book I couldn't put down. Ms. Garlock uses folksy charm, intense emotion, delightful characters, and homespun love to weave this charming novel.
Jane Love arrives in Timbertown, Wyoming hoping to escape her shameful past. She longs for friendship and respect; instead, she finds love and an enemy. Dorothy Garlock spins Jane Love into a remarkable, strong heroine - yet this heroine has an air of vulnerability. In THE LISTENING SKY, a deranged person stalks Jane Love. In fact that is the story's potency - the heroine's secret? To intrigue her reader, Garlock drops subtle hints alluding to Jane's past and subsequently her story whirls in entertainment.
Garlock's hero, T.C. Kilkenny has Irish, English, and Blackfoot ancestry. Accordingly, he is determined, dignified, and proud. Garlock further accents his character by making Kilkenny strong and gentle. A hero who immediately sees through Jane's veil of cover, he recognizes the terrified woman beneath, but before he can help her, he must keep her in his town. T.C. has no qualms about his matchmaking ideas. A lumberjack and a cattleman, he is determined to build a town and what better way than to find wives . . . for his men and for . . . himself.
Dorothy Garlock hands her reader a literary treasure. THE LISTENING SKY is a 'feel good' story. Although, the author relies on intrigue and mystery, she does not keep her reader on the edge; she moves her characters and their problems along. The reader is not subject to long moments of conflict and trouble; no Garlock writes a quick paced book filled with interesting predicaments and engaging secondary characters. Well done.

A keeper on the bookshelf.......2005-04-27
This was the first Dorothy Garlock novel I had read, and I was impressed by what I read. Jane Love's character is well developed and believable. She has her strengths, she has her weaknesses, and of course, she has her mysterious past. I like how Garlock weaved historical figures and events into her writing, for it made it all more plausible.
The only significant complaint I have about the books has to do with all the typographical errors. There are at least fifteen -- such simple things like quotation marks missing at the end of dialogue or general typos.
All in all, the novel is well worth reading if you're a romance fan. I hope to read more titles by this author.
Another good Garlock.......2003-01-09
This was good. Pioneering in Wyoming. Starting a town with men about---lets bring in some women. The story is fast paced and keeps going well. Things are always happening, so it makes it hard to put down! I'm so tired! :)
Jane reminds of Jane Eyre. The trod upon Jane who falls for the powerful Mr. Rochester. Except hes now Mr. American Kilkenny.
Hes got Irish and Indian blood in him. Hes running the town.
And he finds her intriguing.
She has a painful secret. She doesn't want to share with anyone and this keeps her and Kilkenny apart for most of the story. Theres also the typical Garlock character of the woman beaten who has left her bad man and the obsessed maniacal person out to kill our heroine.
But---what I want to say is that its just good. It keeps you going and its a sweet romance. Its built up enough to make it believable and sentimental throughout the story.
Jane grows close to several other women in the story as well as Kilkennys people. They name them the family which is pretty cool.
Oh yeah and Colin Tallman shows up from "Larkspur" and falls in love.
Sorry this isn't the best review. I keep staying up late reading Ms. Garlock! This is one of the good ones! Also try "Larkspur" and "House on a Hill."

Book Description
The Imperial Guard are humanity's first line of defence against the remorseless assaults of alien enemies, hell-bent on mankind's destruction. For the men of the Tanith First-and-Only and their fearless commander, Commissar Ibram Gaunt, it is a war in which they must be prepared to lay down, not just their bodies, but their very souls.
Customer Reviews:
Abnett throws a quick and awesome punch, then follows up........2007-05-12
Ghostmaker, the second book of Gaunt's Ghosts, is used to delve into the characters of each of the Ghosts. The book is split into two very distinct parts; once the reminiscing about the soldiers is over, the present tense story takes over, and what a story it is. The flashback part showcases a number of incredible scenes. Of note is the Fall Of Tanith itself, Gaunt and Rawne teaming up against Orks on an ice deathworld, Larkin being visited by a hallucination...or was it? which forces him to confront his inner daemons and make a key shot, and an utterly fantastic chapter where Mkoll single-handedly kills a Chaos dreadnought. Caffran, Bragg, Corbec, Milo, and Dorden are also brought into the limelight.
There is also a very important scene where the Ghosts take a tough target that a regiment of elite aristocrat-warriors, the Volpone 50th, couldn't take, and out of spite thier general orders artillery fire on Gaunt's men.
After this is done the real action starts: As the Imperial Guard go on the offensive, onlooking Eldar whip up a vast psychic storm to wreak havoc over the battlefield. The Ghosts are separated and forced to cooperate with the Volpone. Meddling in Gaunt's affairs as he tries to rally his men is aa female inquisitor named Lilith, who believed that Milo may be an unsanctioned psyker. Lilith is a well-done character, trying to manipulate Gaunt and the other officers with her psychic powers, before she realizes that she doesn't need to. The battle degenerates and the Tanith and Volpone start to display strange behavior, with Lilith finally discovering a strange psychic spell in the storm. There is an excellent sequence where Larkin looks at the illusionary-disguised Eldar through his scope and sees them for what they really are.
All in all Ghostmaker is an excellent, action-packed, character-heavy story that delves deeply into the personalities of the Ghosts in a way First and Only couldn't. It's no match in any way for the next book, though...
My 100-word book review.......2007-04-27
Ghostmaker, the second book of the Gaunt's Ghosts series by Dan Abnett, completes the introductions, so to speak. While First and Only is mostly about Ibram Gaunt, much of Ghostmaker comprises a sequence of mini episodes, each about a key member of the Tanith First, such as scout leader Mkoll, cold-blooded Major Rawne, sniper "Mad" Larkin and genial giant "Try Again" Bragg. This makes the overall narrative somewhat patchy, but the author brings everything together nicely with a terrific climactic battle, where the Ghosts fight alongside some rather unusual allies. We also find out what the word "Feth" actually means!
Get to know Gaunt's Ghosts.......2006-12-24
This book is a in depth look into each of Gaunt's Ghosts main characters. The first book, First and Only, was mainly about Gaunt, his career, his past, and the events that lead to the battle on Epsilon. Nothing about the founding or any of his men in particular or the rivalry's with other company's. This second novel is about all of that. Each man has a short anecdote about a previous battle which tells you alot about their character. My only complaint is that book is simply too short. The overall story being told gets lost in the dozen or so accounts of the Ghosts. The ending lacks lustre and while gives more detail into the original Tanith I'm left thirsting for more.
3 1/2 star short-story book.......2006-06-14
This book, a collection of mainly short-stories with one slightly longer story to finish, is a nicely written piece of military sci-fi.
I was not happy with First and Only due to the rather awkward insertion of origin pieces of the various plot devices, but that tactic appears to have vanished in this work. The use of Lilith as a plot-resolving device in the last piece did seem rather abrupt, but what do I know.
Well worth reading if this is your genre.
Note that I have no knowledge of W40k universe outside of what I have read in abnett's novels. It really doesn't enter into the work in a overt or forced fashion as far as I can tell.
All in all, a great book
Must read for the series proly but just ok........2006-03-19
LOved the first book and wish i would of read these reviemws and was aware from the get go that this is a book of short stories. Once i got that I enjoyed the book much more. Last chapter was great and made all the other stuff worth it.

The Food of Bali.......2003-10-23
Swiss-born chef Heinz Von Holzen has his finger in every cooking pot in Bali as the proprietor of two restaurants and operator of a cooking school (visitors can take an intensive half-day course which includes a provision-buying expedition to local fish and produce markets). Most warungs, restaurants, and hotels on Bali serve classic Indonesian fare: Von Holzen's Bumbu Bali and Kecak restaurants on Nusa Dua peninsula are the only establishments on the island devoted solely to authentic native cooking. A paean to Balinese culinary arts and culture, The Food of Bali reveals and shares the secrets of the Balinese kitchen for the very first time.
An outspoken champion of "Bali's real cuisine," Von Holzen designed this book for the cook who wants to learn about the social and historical context in which Balinese food is created and enjoyed. An extensive introduction explains how climate, geography, and centuries of outside influences (Chinese, Indian, Muslim, Portuguese, Spanish, English, and Dutch traders and invaders) have affected the evolution of this extraordinary diet. He gives would-be chefs much more than the breezy cookbook they bargained for: the first two-thirds of the book offers an intimate tour of Balinese life, household cooking practices, the cult of rice, and the local spice markets and stalls. We come to appreciate the tripartite role of food as sustenance, sacrificial temple offering to appease the gods, and essential ritual component of Bali-Hindu religious ceremonies. As with everything else on Bali, food is inextricably intertwined with faith-it may support mundane human life, but its essence also nourishes the revered, visiting ancestral deities during sacred rites and celebrations.
Divided into three parts, the "Food in Bali" division transports us to an island marked by natural abundance--graced with fertile rice fields, coconut plantations, tropical fruit trees, coffee bushes, flowers, edible wild greens, and fresh fish. Rice, always a subject of great passion, is the staple food of Bali: it thrives in the garden of the gods as the gift of Dewi Sri, the most widely worshipped and beloved deity on the island. The growth, preparation and consumption of food in Bali gives rise to lovingly crafted networks of shrines and a lifestyle of thankful daily offerings to the life-giving rice goddess: every face in Bali lights up with joy at the mention of her name. Von Holzen includes all aspects and rhythms of rice cultivation, from the new high-yield strains to the village "subak" cooperative which regulates rice production and apportions irrigation water for each community.
The second section, "Cooking in Bali," steps through the doorway of the family kitchen to familiarize us with Balinese eating customs and basic cooking equipment and utensils (a wood-fired stove, a blackened clay pot to steam rice and leaf-wrapped foods, and a second gas stove to boil water and fry). Like pirates prying open a buried treasure chest, we explore the contents of the fabled Balinese cupboard: Von Holzen rummages through wooden compartments holding a tantalizing array of unusual local spices, herbs, and seasonings (cloves, palm sugar, dried shrimp paste, chilies, candle nuts, and cinnamon bark). Tourists rarely get to glimpse Balinese life within the high walls of the family compound: here, we have eye-opening photos of villagers hand-making large ceremonial quantities of rice and meat-filled banana leaf offerings and rows of delectable chicken satés. The Food of Bali even penetrates a sacred innermost pavilion to capture white-robed priests enjoying a gorgeous, decorative feast within temple festival grounds.
The final segment, "The Recipes," enables you to recreate "the enchantment of Bali in your own kitchen at home" with Von Holzen's collection of easy-to-follow recipes. The beauty of Bali is reflected in the artistically prepared dishes shown in brilliantly photographed, full-page illustrations bursting with flavor. (These colorful gastronomical displays could incite an excitable reader to jump the first plane back to Jimbaran Bay to gorge on these favorite specialties firsthand!) Traditional Balinese chefs like to use a variety of flavors, textures, spices, and foodstuffs invariably supported by a secure round mound of local "nasi putih," (steamed white rice). We master the popular red, white, black, and yellow rice standbys: coconut rice, nasi goreng, and conical nasi kuning (yellow rice embellished with coconut milk, turmeric, butter, and chicken stock). Exotic tastes and new aromas attack your senses on every page as the authors cover the intricate preparation of the Balinese "base"-the sauces, condiments, and marinades that form the cornerstone of Balinese food presentation. Unfurl a banana leaf plate and fire up your coconut husk grill for a minced seafood "saté lilit" on lemon grass spears garnished with white frangipani blossoms! Recommended for travel and cooking aficionados alike, The Food of Bali celebrates Bali's "tropical bounty set in the shadow of the volcanoes"; it will tickle your taste buds and get your culinary juices flowing. Use its appendix of mail order suppliers to arm yourself with those hard to find ingredients and embark on a private, at-home Balinese eating escapade!
Beautiful photography!.......2001-02-05
My husband and I recently used our time share in Nusa Dua, Bali. It was a delightful experience, and this book is a wonderful souvenir of our stay on the island. The seafood at Jimbaron Bay was mouthwatering, and I can hardly wait to recreate some of the recipes in this book. It is unusual to find a book that combines the culture, beauty of the island, and food preparation as well as this does. It is a great buy!
Excellent!!!.......1999-06-15
My wife and I went on our honeymoon to Bali. We ate at the Ritz-Carlton, which sucked, and the Inter-Continental which was excellent, AND the local warungs. We enjoyed the warungs the most. But this book still helps give an understanding of Balinese cooking. Beautiful pictures show how elegant this simple cooking can be!!! Highly recommended. I've cooked a few of the recepies, wonderful! Come on over for dinner!!
Heinz.......1999-05-06
I'm afraid Dnet from Australia has fallen prey to the kind of PC liberal attitude that is every bit as ignorant as any conservative bias. My husband and I recently had the pleasure of taking a cooking class with Heinz, and I'm happy to report he is devoted to sharing the real cusine of Bali with the world. Heinz is married to a woman from Bali, and together they run perhaps the only restaurant on the island devoted purely to the cuisine of that country. At the restaurant, he clearly respects and adores his staff and they him. Dnet might not be aware the the majority of warangs on the island serve mainly Indonesian food with a just a few dishes from Bali. Heinz also has built up a network of sustainable farmers along with independent fishermen and shopkeepers to supply his restaurant. We were struck by by his compassion and understanding of the economic situation facing his fellow islanders, and his efforts to train a new generation of Balinese chefs who might proudly show the world their fine cuisine. In addition, Heinz is devoted to the conservation of the endangered sea turtles of Bali, and has used much of his money toward those efforts. Honestly, I wish people would try to learn a little more about an author before making smug snap judgements about him. Plus, the cookbook is pretty darn great.
Excellent guide to Balinese cuisine.......1998-08-17
During my visit to Bali and my stay at the Ritz Carlton, I was one of the few people who enjoyed a special Balinese meal prepared at my table by the Executive Chef Mr. von Holzen. I had the opportunity to read both his books and found them easy to follow and the finished product as depicted by the numerous pictures do not come close to the real beauty and appetizing dishes that Mr. von Holzen produces in real life. I highly recommend these books for any gourmet or someone who is interested in the Polinesian cuisine. Dr. Steve C. Kemiji

Yea! More pattern books!.......2006-03-01
Frances Grimble shares her meticulous vision with us once again. A great two book series full of facinating information and patterns galore. I cannot wait to clothe many a pretty lady using them. Not for the faint of heart. The patterns are period correct and I would advise an advanced skill level, or a great deal of patience. Always do a mock up. Remember these are patterns of the age. So start at the skin and work your way out to a glorious new costume.
Enjoy.
This is Volume 2.......2004-11-07
This is a great book, but you should know that it is not a second edition of Fashions of the Gilded Age, Volume 1. It is the second volume of the anthology, and a different book with all different patterns. The title is actually Fashions of the Gilded Age, Volume 2: Evening, Bridal, Sports, Outerwear, Accessories, and Dressmaking 1877-1882. It's just as good as Volume 1, none of the information is the same except the intro on how to use the patterns, and the dressmaking manual is really unique.
I heard both volumes were published but it took me awhile to find the second one on Amazon because it was mislisted. So I thought I'd warn other people.
Wow! Continued.......2004-09-29
I just reviewed Volume 1, where I said the book contains a huge selection of patterns. Volume 2 focuses on patterns for evening dresses, bridal wear, sports wear, and outer wear. The chapters on accessories and trimmings contain some needlework patterns, embroidery and so on. I figure if I don't do the handwork I'll still have learned a lot about buying appropriate materials.
I bought both volumes, but they are organized so you can use them separately. Both contain the instructions for using the book and the special rulers that allow you to draft patterns to fit you. They also both have a big glossary, a bibliography, and two indexes.
Volume 2 has something really special though--a dressmaking manual. The book says it was rewritten from numerous rare original sources that are listed in the bibliography. But it's been rewritten so it doesn't read that way; you can't tell where any source begins or ends. That makes the manual a lot easier to use. And it's so long it could have been published as a book by itself. I'm glad to have it, because I've never been able to find a comprehensive sewing manual for this period. It even has corset-making instructions (the corset patterns are in Volume 1).
Both volumes are very well edited and produced. This is not a cheap printing job.
Anyone who does Old West reenactment or Victorian teas would love these books!

much like the other Frances Grimble books.......2006-03-22
This book features patterns for dresses, skirts, shirts, jackets, underclothing (etc.) for the years 1900-1906
25 (patterns) from 1900
18 from 1901
5 from 1902
16 from 1903
7 from 1904
5 from 1905
3 from 1906
This is a good book, well up to Frances Grimble's high standards. It contains many patterns but can also double as a sourcebook, as it contains many pictures of clothes from fashion plates. I would recommend buying it, but make sure to research these years to find out if you really want it.
A must-have Edwardian reference.......2002-02-15
I make custom reproduction clothing and I have found The Voice of Fashion to be extremely helpful. The pattern selection is very impressive and attractive. I have the Janet Arnold book and the Norah Waugh book, but this book has many more patterns for this era. I can find one for any style the customer wants, rather than having to take some basic pattern and alter it. I just let them leaf through the book and pick one out. By using the special rulers I can enlarge the pattern to fit any customer with no (or hardly any) alterations-these patterns fit better than most commercial sized patterns. The rulers are easy to use, you just follow the instructions. The book also has instructions for early 20th century sewing methods, and lots of fashion columns on fabrics and trims. I consider it indispensable to my business. If you wanted to make even one period outfit, this book would still probably save you money, because otherwise you'd have to buy separate patterns for the dress, the underclothes, the outer wear etc.

This vintage how-to manual — the first modern American sewing book — provided turn-of-the-century seamstresses with clear instructions for altering patterns, hand-sewing stitches, and creating shirt-blouses, skirts, wedding and evening gowns, coats, maternity wear, undergarments, children's clothing and other apparel. Also details lost arts like boning a bodice, creating bust enhancers, more.

Larger print, better binding and it'll get 5 stars........2007-02-24
I've had it a year and the binding is unraveling. The information in this book is very useful. Some improvements to the text, illustrations and binding in the book and it would've made it a 5 star book.
Most complete instructions for Victorian/Edwardian period sewing techniques.......2005-10-26
I make reproductions costumes for our NYS Historic Preservation Costume Department. I have been trying without success to find an authentic 1885 Norfolk Suit and knickerbockers to replicate for a boy aged 8 years old. This wonderful sewing manual had a detailed description of both. Although it was written in 1905, the sewing techniques have been the same for many, many years. This manual is my most treasured for authentic techniques of the Victorian/Edwardian era.
Not Victorian.......2002-10-04
Victoria was queen from 1837-1901.
A reprinted dressmaking book from 1905 should not have it's title changed to include the word "Victorian". It's very misleading.
This book is for the S front pidgeon breasted style of Edwardian clothing only.
It does not even mention bustles, hoopskirts, fitted bodices, or any of the other key elements that defined Victorian costume.
This book does not include any patterns, but it does tell you how to alter and sew garments from existing patterns, and might be useful if you have some vintage patterns that you'd like to adjust and use.
I am highly disappointed and I plan to return this book.
Only Late Victorian Era.......2001-02-03
This book should say that it only covers techniques from the late Victorian era through the turn of the century. Earlier techniques are not covered, otherwise it is a good book. If you are looking for dressmaking techniques prior to near the turn of the century, look elsewhere...
Authentic Victorian Dressmaking Techniques.......2000-08-29
A must have resource for anyone recreating vintage fashions. Well defined instructions and illustrations detailing many techniques that can be incorporated into current historical patterns.

Love this little book.......2007-07-04
The pictures in this book are just terrific- clear, well-drawn, and simple in that pre-digital, 70's pen-and-ink style that makes me downright nostalgic. And there are a lot of things in the book that I didin't know I needed until I saw them- how about a tool cleaner? Put sand in a large container, mix in used oil, and store your tools in the sand/oil mix. They come out not just cleaned, but already oiled, too. Also inside: multiple composters, a cold frame, a root cellar, feeders, brooders, bird houses, chairs, benches, fencing, gates- and you can probably build them most of them just by looking at the pictures. It's like having a cool great-uncle teach you old farm tricks.
