Book Description

Following her wildly popular Callahan Brothers trilogy, national bestselling author JoAnn Ross begins the sparkling Stewart Sisters trilogy with this fun, sexy riff on the classic movie To Catch a Thief -- with a Scottish twist!

Lily Stewart is busy planning the summer Highland Games at her family's Great Smoky Mountain resort. So the last thing she needs is some arrogant, demanding Scotsman -- no matter how sexy -- arriving to film the annual festival. It's bad enough that he's constantly interrupting her days -- but even worse that he's tempting her to rev up her nights with a Highland fling.

Filmmaker Ian MacDougall MacKenzie is actually there to steal back the Brooch of Lorn, which has gone back and forth between the Stewarts and the MacDougalls ever since it was ripped from Robert the Bruce's tartan in 1306. But when Ian realizes Lily has stolen his heart, he wonders whether love can prevail once she discovers he's been deceiving her all along....

3 out of 5 stars Good beach read.......2006-06-30

This is the type of book in which you can have background noise on while reading. You could easily read this book on the beach, but you might fall asleep and get sunburned.

5 out of 5 stars Ah...is there anything like a Scotsman?.......2005-07-10

Well, no! Especially Ian MacKenzie who's been sent to retrieve a family heirloom. He expects a few obstacles, but he doesn't expect a woman like Lily Stewart and the sparks that fly between them. Their respective families make any sparking difficult, especially considering their feud over the Brooch of Lorn. But sometimes a heat like Lily and Ian's just can't be denied.

A sparkling story that showcases Ross's storytelling mastery, her great dialogue and her wonderful sense of humor!

1 out of 5 stars A big time dissapointment.......2004-10-20

I bought this because well...I read "Out of the Blue" the second book in this series and I thought it was good, so I went ahead and bought the first one to the series. And it turned out to be a big dissapointment. The story is boring. She overdone it with the historical facts. The characters are unreal. When someone is telling you that they accuse you of stealing their family heirloom and they're wanting it back. I expected the character to be hurt. But the most unreasonable thing ever! THey have sex! This is a HUGE disgrace toward Ross's name. If you like her writing as I do, please don't buy this installment and go right to the next two. They are much better.

2 out of 5 stars Major Bummer !!.......2004-04-23

No more ROSS books for me! The plots are becoming so repeative and boring. Chow Baby!

1 out of 5 stars From bad to worse !.......2004-04-23

I don't know, maybe it's me, but this writer seems to keep going from bad to worse with her stories. No doubt, it's time to change up! Back to the drawing board. With some of the standard writers of this genre lately it is almost as though I have to close my eyes, give it the ennie, meanie, miney, mo teck to see what to read next. (By the way that teck is not working!)

3 out of 5 stars OK, but a LITTLE too hard for ME,,,.......2006-02-19

It took me a week to finish this book. It had no pictures. My mom said it had 158 pictures, but it didn't. It had long chapters, 12 chapters. I do not recommened some nine year olds to read this book, I'm one.

5 out of 5 stars Out of the Mist.......2003-06-23

I really enjoyed this book, and all the other Golden Filly Series. This book was unique because Trish isn't perfect, and niether is her life. Most other books go on and on about the perfect lives of young people, but this book was different. It's about a teen aged girl named Trish, who hasn't had it easy. I think the moral of this story was that Trish came "Out of the Mist" of a terribly broken heart that is on the way to the healing process, which will make Trish a better, and stronger person. This was an awesome book!! I recommend that you read the previous books in this series!!

5 out of 5 stars Out of the mist of grief, Trisha learns more about herself.......2001-01-10

Trisha has finally accomplished all she dreamed of, and lost the one thing that could tear her apart. After her father died she stays with friends in California to race, and take a summer school class in chemistry. Trisha is so lock up in her grieve, lost in her faith and struggling to make sense of her life that she takes chances and makes some bad decisions. This book is an excellent example of the trial and tribulations that occur when someone you hold very dear to you heart dies, and how one comes to heal the wounds of their heart and the wounds of their soul. Trisha is a wonderful charater, in a series that makes you laugh, cry, and wonder at the strenght in one girl.

5 out of 5 stars Sad, but with a great ending........2000-05-12

Anyone who loved horses should read this book! It kept me up untill late at night. Better than any other horse series I have ever read! Go Trish!

5 out of 5 stars Sigmor Cameron finds a wife.......2007-01-27

Sigimor Cameron goes south into England to help save the life of a man who saved his. He arrives at Drumwich Castle to find his friend Peter has been murdered. Peter's sister Jolene and his son go into hiding in the bowels of the castle. Sigimor and his men agree to get the three year old heir and his aunt out of the castle and to safety in Scotland. They are pursued by Harold who wants Jolene and the little boy so he can keep the castle and fortune that belonged to Peter. There are several altercations between Harold and Sigimor, Jolene is captured at one point. Sigimor gets her back and talks her into marrying him to keep Harold from getting her. They fall in love, but continue to fight Harold's attempts to get Jolene and the little boy. Jolene and Sigimor are a great couple because they are so different and but "fit" perfectly. Hannah Howell's books always have unlikely couples who meet and stay together through one travail after another. She's done another great medieval romance, and kept the stories of the Cameron clan going. If you like Hannah Howell and want to know more about the Camerons, get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Scottish Historical Romance.......2007-01-08

Hannah Howell brings us the story of Sigimor Cameron, a Highland Laird, who goes to England to aid a man, Peter, who saved his life years ago. He arrives to find himself captured by Peter's evil cousin, Harold. Harold has killed Peter and plans to hang Sigimor and his clansmen until Peter's sister, Jolene sets them free. In exchange, she asks Sigimor to help her and Peter's son, Reynard, escape Harold. Harold seeks to marry Jolene against her will and to kill Reynard so he may inherit Peter's title. Sigimor and his clansmen flee with the pair but are pursued by Harold and his hired men. Sigimor, a 6'4" warrior, finds himself very attracted to Jolene, even though she isn't his type, she is petite, dark haired and English. He prefers buxom blondes or so he thought. Jolene, 23 years old, is still a maid because her brother gave her the freedom to pick her husband. Nobody has stirred her passion until she meet this huge redheaded Scotsman. In order to protect Jolene in the case she is captured Sigimor proposes marriage. Jolene agrees knowing she can always seek an annulment if she wants. When it comes to a head, she must decide whether to stay with her husband or to keep the promise to her brother to watch over his son. When her other kinsmen show up to help, she must make her decision.

I loved the humor of this book, the reaction everytime a Scotsman finds out she is English is hilarious. Jolene's reaction is even funnier. The characters have such chemistry that it just keeps the story hot. Great story I highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars Just OK- drags alot and romance isn't spectacular.......2006-08-17

Harold has killed his cousin Peter, an Earl, and is searching the grounds for Peter's sister and son/heir. He plans to take over Peter's lands and title. Lady Jolene, Peter's sister, free's the highlander's (who came too late to save Peter) imprisioned by her evil cousin. In doing so, they promise to take her and her nephew away to safety.

Jolene, her nephew, Laird Sigimor and his men journey thru England and Scotland with Harold on their tale. Along the way sparks fly between Jolene and Sigimor, but neither admits to anything. Then Sigimor decides to marry Jolene (against her protests) in order to keep her safe? -or is it because he feel's that she 'fits'- from a forced marriage to Harold. They continue onto Scarglas and Dubheildland as Harold turns desperate to kill them.

Overall it was OK, don't think I'll be rereading it soon and it did take me several days to get into it, unlike Highland Warrior (much better). So, you might want to read it to keep up with the series, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it as a first Howell book.

If you like highlanders, read Garwood and Paula Quinn - both are EXCELLENT! (Is it just me or does this book sound a bit too similar to Garwoods Ransom?)

5 out of 5 stars My favorite so far!.......2006-07-15

This is by far my favorite book of Hannah Howell! I just want to read it again and again it's that great!

                  4 out of 5 stars A cute romance.......2006-05-20

Maybe because I haven't read the author's previous books, I find the negative reviews puzzling. No, the hero is not a very complex man but I thought his character was appropriately portrayed. He isn't a man of court but a laird in the often violent Scotland of the 15th century. He was appropriately honest, straightforward, and a bit rough on the edge. I thought the romance between the hero and heroine was cute. One could feel the growing love between them, and even though the villains were dispatched rather easily, sometimes it's refreshing to read a romance without contrived twists and turns designed solely to put the title couple through hell and back. A light enjoyable romance.

                              Book Description

Throughout the forty-some books that Henri Nouwen wrote and the hundreds of talks that he gave, the subject of Prayer runs through them all and unites them. For him a life of faith is a life of prayer. Drawn from many decades of his life, the compilation of Henri's thoughts, feelings, and the struggle with prayer, reveal the core of the man and his belief that prayer is the only necessary thing.

Outstanding. This was written by a close friend of Henri Nouwen. She has done a wonderful job of collecting & editing. This book is a tribute to Nouwen, and will be a joy to read and use for meditation, perhaps during Lent.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for those of us needing to be taught how to pray.........2005-04-30

Nouwen's work is always worthwhile, even when it is not his best effort. This book is his very best work on the most important topic he consistently addressed- prayer. Much thanks need to be given to Wendy Greer who gleaned these excerpts from his many books. She has done an admirable job. This book, due to it's format, is very conducive to being read over a course of time, maybe for one's devotions. The wisdom in it makes for a book that I will return to over and over again. I have given this book to my closest christian friends, who like me have a conviction that the prayerful life, a life lived always in the awareness of our relationship with Christ, is the only life worth living.

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the Core of Prayer & Life.......2000-06-14

The Only Necessary Thing is not the usual book on how to pray and what makes prayer so important. It is a collection of a man's writings on his passionate believe in the Savior, and therefore, his conversations with Him. It gives a glimpse of how Henri Nouwen himself prayed and what is prayer to him. But never one time in the book does he come across as didactic. Instead, the book weaves together the essence of prayer and life in a contemplative and meditative manner. One can almost chew and "re-chew" through Nouwen's sober, frank and yet deep contemplation on his God and his conversations with Him.

Definitely, the credit of this book must also go to Wendy Greer, who has an excellent grasp of Nouwen's writings, and undoubtedly, her same passion for his God. She has put together Nouwen's best essays and writings in categories and ways that enables one to walk through each day reading snippets of the writings with a sense of continuity as well as of substance to meditate and chew for the day.

The Only Necessary Thing is a journey to the core of prayer, and that prayer is journey to the core of life.

Henri Nouwen has shaped the spirituality of several generations of believers from all of the major Christians denominations. From popular professor at Harvard and Yale to simple chaplain of L'Arche, a living community of mentally handicapped people and their friends, Fr. Henri knew how to experience life to its full. And at the core of it all, he put prayer. This precious, unique collection of his best writings on prayer and meditation was edited by one of his close friends, Wendy Greer.

I purchased Mr. Morgan's last book (about Gingerbread Houses) and loved it, I couldn't wait to get my hands on his latest creation. As usual his creativity and talent shines through. I enjoy giving these types of books as gifts because my friends and I are not pastry chefs, we are merely mothers who want to make things that taste great, look great, and that can be recreated without the official title of 'pastry chef' after our names. Mr. Morgan's book does all of this. The colors, the pictures, the recipes, a treasure from cover to cover. Hope my friends don't read this, or they'll know what they're getting for Christmas! I HIGHLY recommend this book!!!

                                  1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-05-13

I was very much looking forward to receiving this book, but was generally disappointed with it. I agree with the reviewer who said the cover was the best part. Many of the cookie decorations were mundane and rather unprofessional looking. This book didn't offer anything innovative or new.

5 out of 5 stars Professional "How-Tos" for Easy, Elegant Cookies.......2004-04-27

This delightful book shows, step-by-step, how to create elegant confections from basic cookie dough. "The Artful Cookie" explains in simple detail, how to prepare four basic dough recipes and four recipes for glaze, ganache and icings. In clear language, Pastry Chef, Aaron Morgan, outlines easy professional techniques, using ordinary ingredients and kitchen utensils to create delectable cookies you'd be proud to serve anywhere for any occasion.
The Artful Cookie is a great present for parents who want to have fun in the kitchen with their children, as well as "the older kid" in all of us. The how-to photos are easy to follow, encouraging use of imagination in creating your very own delectable designs, and the results are downright delicious!

I was expecting something more useful. Some of the cookies looked lumpy, and the decorating wasn't of the highest caliber.

2 out of 5 stars The cover is the best part of the book.......2004-03-29

I admit that I am a person who buys cookbooks for the pictures - I love the artistic side of food more than the food itself. I was very disappointed with this book; the only picture that was really worthwhile was the one on the cover. There are a lot of pictures, but nothing too special. The book gives some great advice as to food temperatures for preparing dough, how much to mix it, etc., but the book is not something I would have bought had I found it in the store. I can see more creativity in the bakery at my local grocery store. I'm sure the author is a great chef but I wanted something MORE artful.
As for cookbooks I WOULD recommend, my all-time favorite is the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook - the best recipes are in that one. I also have a cute Star Wars cookbook - "Wookie Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes," or something like that - not that I like Star Wars but there are intersting/humorous pictures. "Cookies - the Little Guides," ISBN 1875137629 has tons of great pictures and recipes, and it's really inexpensive, although the shortbread recipe doesn't work. I also have a soft cover Pillbury miniature pamphlet/mini-mag called "Cookies & Bars" that is wonderful. Try those instead.

Dazzling in their bold use of color and wide range of designs, Art Nouveau tiles are enjoying a resurgence in popularity. These international tile designs encompassed striking decorative elements to be used in residences and public buildings. High fired, these tiles retain their original color and beauty despite over one hundred years of use. This book, designed for both the beginning collector and the long time lover of tiles, includes full color examples of over 600 designs. A very useful and beautiful collectors guide, it provides information about many major tile manufacturers. It is arranged by company and design and contains a guide to market prices, as well as suggestions and tips for tile collectors. Filling a gap in the tile books currently available, this volume provides both the largest collection of single Art Nouveau images published to date, and a concise introduction to the field of tiles. A bibliography contains research sources for more detailed study and information regarding organizations devoted to tile preservation and collection. This is the perfect choice for any lover of ceramic surfaces and those who appreciate and enjoy color and design. It will undoubtedly be instrumental in not only introducing many to the beauty of Art Nouveau design, but also expanding their interest in collecting this amazing art form.

Sometimes you need a good source, with photographs, for identifying the many, many art nouveau tiles out there. THIS BOOK DOES THAT!!!! Over the years I have collected some art nouveau tiles and, with the aid of this book --- IN MINUTES --- I was able to identify all of them. As a bonus a current value for each tile is also provided. For the serious tile collector Art Nouveau Tiles by Sandra Fowler and Wendy Harvey is a MUST!!!!

                                    Book Description

At the turn of the century, Art Nouveau-- characterized by richly ornamental, curvilinear design-- held sway as the international style in art, architecture, and decorative arts, including the production of tiles. This is the first book to examine Art Nouveau tiles from all over Europe as well as the United States, and an essential volume for the collector and interior designer, featuring 200 stunning color photographs of these ceramic treasures.

The authors explore various techniques and processes used in the creation of Art Nouveau tiles, from hand-painting and mosaic work to terracotta and faience, as well as the history of tile production and the architectural application of tiles in Europe, Russia, and America from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. The book traces the roots of Art Nouveau to the British Arts and Crafts movement, which produced tile work by such artists as William Morris, William De Morgan, and Christopher Dresser. Following this, the wide variety of Art Nouveau tiles across northern and Central Europe is surveyed in detail: in Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Separate chapters are also devoted to Spain and Portugal, and the unique tradition of American tile-making-- highlighting the work of important designers, artists, architects, and manufacturers. To conclude their survey, the authors look at how elements of Art Nouveau were absorbed into Art Deco after World War I, and the revival of Art Nouveau styles of tile-making in the 1980s and 1990s. A special section for collectors discusses the significance of tile motifs, and offers information about marks on tile backs and advice on acquisition, display, restoration, and repair.

4 out of 5 stars Tiles for modern tastes...........2000-09-01

These days, many of us are becoming reacquainted with the art of our parents or grandparents...not the clunky Victorian stuff, but the wonderful jazzy "art" of the "nouveau." Sometimes I wonder why we ever got away from it, but I suspect two world wars and an economic depression in the 20th century played a big role.

In this lovely historical overview of the Art Nouveau period of tilemaking, Hans van Lemmen provides many up-close examples of individual decorative tiles, as well as 'in situ' photographs of the architectural designs employing these tiles. He begins by describing the Art Nouveau movment itself, which he says can be traced to various sources including the negative reaction to neoclassicism by various 19th Century artists and intellectuals. Some of them felt neoclassical art was pagan and wanted to return to a Gothic or Christian theme. Others reacted to the commercial and industrial use of the neoclassical and wanted to return to a naturalistic theme. In addition, Western artists during this period were heavily influenced by Japanese, Chinese and Indonesian art, which they incorporated into their work. It should surprise no one that one example Van Lemmen provides is a tile executed about 1900 which shows yellow and orange sunflowers (ala Van Gogh who died in 1890).

The book covers the major Art Nouveau centers. The section on Northern Europe (heavy emphasis on France where the movement may have begun) shows salon panels in private homes and other interior applications; Central Europe (especially Bohemia and Hungary) shows many exterior applications; Southern Europe, which features some of the Art Nouveau maiolica found in Barcelona; and the "New World" which includes the Bayard Building on Bleeker Street in New York City designed by Louis Sullivan (Chicago School of Architecture). Many of Van Lemmen's photographs include "fantastical" designs depicting nature, mythology, and abstract decorative subjects. Overall, this book is an informative introduction to the topic of Art Nouveau tiles and their uses and the section on Eastern Europe is worth the price of the book.

If you are a grandpa or ever plan to be one, this is a great book. My grand daughter loves these sort of geegaws, and I love her. It's a win-win for everyone!

My grandfather finished making the rocking horse from this book last week - he had checked the book out from the library. My 15 month old son loves his white horse! I looked through the book and saw many other toys that I know my son will like, so I'm going to order it and ask my husband to get started!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting projects, nice background info, and clear instructions.......2005-09-28

This book is excellent. In addition to Rodney Frost's books, I'm adding this to my library of books which inspire me to create other projects. There are new (old, really, but new to most readers) twists on familiar toys - as other reviewers have commented, the background stories are really fun, too. Cool book!

Tired of buying your kid another mindless, souless piece of useless plastic? Then try John Nelson's book about American folk toys. Not only does Nelson delve into the history of toys in America, he also provides blueprints and step-by-step instructions on how to build them. The book should appeal to anyone interested in toys, anyone looking for gift ideas, anyone who is handy with tools, and anyone who wants to learn!

Nelson has done a splendid job of integrating the readability of a coffee table book and the ruggedness of a functional shop-guide. His smooth writing style and clever wit led me to read the book cover to cover in the first night it was in my possesion. The illustrations are of the utmost quality. Truly a first rate book. Thank you John, for a book that will hopefully lead to homemade toys for my grandchildren this christmas!

                                                  Book Description

The work of Chris Little, an Atlanta-based photographer specializes in corporate and residential interiors with many award-winning designers is shown throughout the book.
Award-winning designer Charles Gandy creates an amazingly informative guide to the ABCs of interior decorating. Through beautifully photographed homes in a variety of styles, this very basic reference presents the fundamentals of design, such as line, rhythm, scale, shape, form, pattern, and proportion. There's advice on setting the stage and establishing an overall mood through light and color, as well as floor, wall, ceiling, door, and window choices. Fabric, furniture, and other embellishments receive their own special section, and a room-by-room tour covers everything from entry halls to home libraries. For a final touch, Gandy discusses the WOW factor: the elusive quality that makes a space extra-special. A Selection of the Homestyle Book Club.

This book is both educational and beautiful. It explains the theories behind good design and provides a knowledge base of tools for creating interior settings that work well. I thought the photos were beautiful with enough variation in the styles and rhythm of the different designs. Rich in flavor and color with different temperatures and goals in mind for the viewer, this book is full of eye candy and inspiration. The content of photos are variable and sweep across a large range of styles and textures, very nice for the beginner and perhaps even the more advanced decorator.

This is without a doubt the best book I have ever read on interior design. The author "cuts to the chase" and demystifies how to put a room together. Where was this book when I decorated my first home and the second and the third? All the basic principles are right here with beautiful photos to illustrate. I loved the book so much that now all of my best friends have one as well!

The book is a very good book for someone who is just starting out with their first home. It give some good advice and is a step above the popular Pottery Barn look.

I have worked in the field of design and I'm sure this book will help the beginner. If you have done some design work on your home and are looking for more advanced advice I would move on to a book that is less general.

The photographs of the rooms are gorgeous. Some of the rooms look VERY EXPENSIVE however, but beautiful, none the less!!!

This book really helped me as I am beginning to decorate my new home. It is very readable, has great illustrations and most importantly give me a framework for how to look at interior design.

I don't plan on selecting everything myself but now I know how to communicate with a decorator.

The Delphi Developer's Guide to OpenGL gives an outline of OpenGL--once a proprietary graphics library that used to reside only on expensive workstations--and explains its capabilities, including how to use it inside Borland's popular programming language, Delphi.

The book begins with a tour of creating a Delphi project that can utilize OpenGL. Over the first five chapters, the book demonstrates how 3D graphics work using popular computer graphics nomenclature as well as instructions for drawing OpenGL objects in perspective within a Delphi window, and the implementation of the three different types of OpenGL lighting (ambient, specular, and diffuse) upon those objects.

While the book provides great coverage on some of OpenGL's effects (fog, transparency, and mapping textures to surfaces), the most important chapter is "Picking," which discusses how to detect a user's interaction with OpenGL objects (i.e., detecting a user's selection and movement of an onscreen object).

There are plenty of code snippets, and all the source code in the book can be found on the CD-ROM. However, the book completely lacks color pictures that demonstrate the results of the techniques, even though the chapters on lighting, textures, and special effects could've greatly benefited from them. Also, all the examples in the book use extremely primitive shapes and actions. Presumably, a talented programmer can extrapolate the viable info from the simple examples and build more sophisticated projects.

With the proliferation of video display cards that support the OpenGL standard, applications built in popular development environments like Delphi can take advantage of real-time 3D graphics. This is a timely book, suitable for programmers with Delphi experience and some graphics programming experience who need to get a leg up on the Delphi/OpenGL learning curve. --Mike Caputo

good book for openGL in delphi, only problem is that the cd doesn't have the main files needed to impliment openGL in your application, strangley enough it comes with links on where you "might" get them(66% chance of finding the openGL panel files on any of the links)...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent OpenGL Kickstart for Delphi.......2003-06-12

First of all. This is a great book, where everything gets explained line by line, there is no way of not understanding a concept. This simplicity enables one to breeze through the book and get a general idea of how OpenGL works. Now, for those wanting to do something more sofisticated than working with 3D primitives and ugly textures, you will need something more, get for example the OpenGL Bible, the source code there is in C, but the OpenGL commands are the same ones, so translating C to Delphi is rather easy. I recommend looking within the Delphi OpenGL community for examples, which you learn to read and understand with the present book, you won't yearn for more, having these 3 ingredients for your OpenGL Delphi progies. Recommendation to the author, do a 2nd book with advanced examples, maybe a Quake like level editor and a basic Quake like game, which is definitely within reach for a volume 2, the Delphi community would *LOVE* you for that and heck I'd be the first to buy it. But anyway, I definitely love the book, it explained to me how OpenGL works, step by step.

                                                  Two thumbs up.

1 out of 5 stars Low quality and poorly written book.......2001-10-05

Two-thirds of the book are code listings which can be found on CD. Some code does not produce the effect the author described. You poor guys have to bear and grin since this is the only book you can find about this subject. If you are a beginner for both Delphi and OpenGL, this book may be more or less helpful. I strongly recommend you to find useful info on the internet.

4 out of 5 stars A Basic OpenGL Primer and a Little More.......2000-10-17

In writing about such a complex subject as OpenGL, an author has two choices: start at the beginning and develop the basics, or assume the basics and show how to do the more complex but common usage. Delphi, a combination of Object Pascal and an IDE, is a wonderful development arena. Most developers are single users and not teams. Thus its is important to have a book that deals with the basics of OpenGL, one that assumes very little about graphics. This is such a book.

Moreover, Jon Jacobs choose to document every line of code in his examples. With this there is a danger of losing concept in the details. He, however, does not because he has a knack of knowing and explaining the important parts of the code. This style is also means that the book builds upon the previous chapters; it becomes difficult to jump into the middle and try to understand what is going on. Thus this is a book to read from cover to cover, perhaps skimming parts, but not one to use as reference until one has read it.

The author does a nice job on an advanced chapter on how to use the mouse to pick up objects and how to move them. This alone is worth the price of the book.

There are two things missing from this book, the first is there is no explanation of pixel rendering, which is used to draw untextured images; and second, almost nothing on fonts. The latter is strange as one could easily encapsulate the basic text operations in a component and have a major addition to the book at little cost.

If you are a Delphi Developer and interested in graphics for games or show, this book is an excellent place to start.

                                                  2 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity.......2000-05-29

Now I'm really in two minds about this one... On the one hand, it's by no means a bad book. After all, it does its job of teaching the basics of OpenGL reasonably well. Besides, as far as I know, it's the only book on this subject written specially for Delphi programmers. This book deserves four stars just for its uniqueness. On the other hand... I've just finished reading "Delphi COM Programming" by Eric Harmon, and it's so superior in terms of style, content and presentation that rating the OpenGL book equally or closely would simply be unfair to Mr. Harmon. So, two stars then. There you go.

Now down to explanations. Doesn't a glance at the book's beautiful cover make you sweat with excitement? Do the words "Delphi" and "OpenGL" in its title raise the images of an award-winning Quake-clone in your mind, a ground-breaking game written entirely with your favorite programming language? Well, forget it. Usually, when I buy a book with a cover CD on it, the first thing I do is to insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and to try some advanced examples to see what I'll be able to do after reading the book. OK, I thought, let's try the same with this OpenGL tome. Double-click on "Source," double-click on "Chapter 14" (last chapter in the book), find an executable, run it... Wow! A green triangle on light-blue background! Not very motivating, really. Try Chapter 13... not much better. Maybe I am looking in a wrong place? A quick browse though the CD revealed, apart from the source code, an HTML file with Web links, a few ugly textures and the entire book's text in ASCII, plus all the screenshots. How very exciting! OK, another beer-mat, then.

Back to the book. Well, as other reviewers have rightly pointed out, it's quite well written. The author uses an informal, conversational style - so conversational in fact, that while reading one can almost imagine a university professor standing next to a blackboard. The author's idea was to make you read the book while simultaneously writing the example programs. This intention is not much helped by the fact that due to the binding used for this book, you cannot make it stay open unless you place something heavy on it. Besides, the try-and-see approach, while certainly useful in, say, a classroom (when there is a direct contact between the instructor and the student), requires that you do lots of wrong things before doing something right. In a written text, I would rather like to see the opposite: correct solution in the beginning of a chapter, followed by the explanation and the list of potential pitfalls. Of course, this is just a matter of taste. In a few places, I found the flow of the explanations a bit illogical and a few jokes rather dull (and unnecessary) - but again, some readers may like them.

When it comes down to the code, however, I see some problems. First, the code for later chapters is based on the code written for earlier chapters, and it gets updated, corrected and changed back many times within a chapter. The full text of programs is given, unfortunately, very rarely. As a result, unless you are following the book very carefully, you soon lose track of what your program should look like. Of course, it is always possible to copy the files from the CD - but in a way this destroys the purpose of the step-by-step approach to the explanations. At another extreme, a lot of listings contain nothing but "form as text" - you know, this list of on-screen objects together with some of their properties. I don't know anyone in his right mind who would type these listings by hand! Come on, if a Delphi programmer does not know how to place components on a form to make the form look more or less like the one shown on the picture, this guy should not be programming at all! Perhaps I am too cynical, but I think the sole purpose of all this was to make the book thicker. By the way, the oversized typeface used for the text also adds to my suspicion.

And then the graphics... Sure, in a book like this you would expect if not full-color figures then at least a colorful insert in the middle. Wrong. All the figures are presented in glorious black-and-white and - since the print is too dark - are essentially useless. And, having tried a few programs, you almost understand it's for better! OK, this is not a book for graphics designers, but ugly is not the right word to describe the choice of colors and textures. OpenGL is supposed to help creating beautiful scenes! Red and green cubes on blue background, anyone? Come on...

I hate criticizing this book so much - it's not that bad, really, and the author's attention to detail is exceptional - it's just that it could have been so much better. If this text were a series of articles in a magazine (with downloadable code), I would heartly recommend it. As a book, it is a disappointment.

                                                  Book Description

Take a wonderful trip back to your youth -- or the youth of your father -- and spend time with the great cowboy matinee heroes of the 1930's-40's and 50's. Those Wide Open Spaces gives you an intimate inside look at the men, women, and horses that rode across theater screens in every town, large and small, throughout this nation every Saturday afternoon for more than three decades.

Between these 448 pages you will find more than 220 old photographs (many quite rare; some never published before)of individuals that kids really looked up to, dreamed of becoming, and really missed when they rode off into the sunset. Among the great names are: Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Rocky Lane, Johnny Mack Brown, Tex Ritter, Wild Bill Elliott, Charles Starrett, Rex Allen, Sunset Carson, Bob Livingston, Buster Crabbe, Tim Holt, Buck Jones, Tom Mix, and many, many more. Also included are biographies on some of the famous "Queens of the Silver Screen" including Linda Sitrling, Virginia Mayo, Nell O'Day, Peggy Stewart, and Anne Jefferys to name a few. And who could forget the mighty steeds these heroes rode in those great B-Westerns? Horses such as: Topper (Hopalong Cassidy), Silver (The Lone Ranger; also Buck Jones' horse), Tarzan (Ken Maynard), and Papoose (ridden by Little Beaver -- aka Robert Blake -- in the Red Rider series).

As long as there are little boys...as long as the little boy in many of us never grows up...there will be a void in our lives -- a longing for those special days in our youth when there were true heroes (both living and fictional). Bring back those days when childhood actually meant being a kid and nothing more.

Those Wide Open Spaces is a fantastic book containing an enormous amount of information regarding the B-Western movies and the heroes that served as role models.
It is great that Mr. Williams would take the time to put together such a book. It was doubtless a labor of love. I love the format that makes for a quick reference. The section on the guys and their horses was inspiring.
This is a must have book to memorialize some great people who made a lot of wonderful memories for myself and many others.

It has been a long, long time since I went to those Saturday matinee movies in Philadelphia and watched by hero on the screen, Roy Rogers. This book brought back such wonderful memories that I had forgotten. The biographies about each star was very interesting with information that I had never known before. You will really enjoy this book and I recommend it for all ages. Looking forward to his next book.
