Isabel Allende has established herself as one of the most consummate of all modern storytellers, a reputation that is confirmed in her novel Portrait in Sepia. Allende offers a compelling saga of the turbulent history, lives, and loves of late 19th-century Chile, drawing on characters from her earlier novels, The House of Spirits and Daughter of Fortune.

In typical Allende fashion, Portrait in Sepia is crammed with love, desire, tragedy, and dark family secrets, all played out against the dramatic backdrop of revolutionary Chile. Our heroine Aurora del Valle's mother is a Chilean-Chinese beauty, while her father is a dissolute scion of the wealthy and powerful del Valle family. At the heart of Aurora's slow, painful re-creation of her childhood towers one of Allende's greatest fictional creations, the heroine's grandmother, Paulina del Valle. An "astute, bewigged Amazon with a gluttonous appetite," Paulina holds both the del Valle family and Allende's novel together as she presides over Aurora's adolescence in a haze of pastries, taffeta, and overweening love.

One of the most interesting aspects of the novel is Allende's decision to turn her heroine into a photographer: "through photography and the written word I try desperately to conquer the transitory nature of my existence, to trap moments before they evanesce, to untangle the confusion of my past." There is little confusion in Allende's elegantly crafted and hugely enjoyable novel. --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

In nineteenth-century Chile, Aurora del Valle suffers a brutal trauma that erases all recollections of the first five years of her life. Raised by her regal and ambitious grandmother Paulina del Valle, Aurora grows up in a privileged environment but is tormented by horrible nightmares. When she is forced to recognize her betrayal at the hands of the man she loves, and to cope with the resulting solitude, she explores the mystery of her past.

I didn't liked it, it's very boring and more of the same (from the first part daughter of fortune).

4 out of 5 stars powerfully feminine family saga.......2007-06-21

The story told by Aurora del Valle in Isabel Allende's "Portrait in Sepia" is profoundly engrossing, captivating the reader in a net of unusual events among remarkable, original characters.

"Portrait in Sepia" reconstructs the past of Aurora, the protagonist of "The Daughter of Fortune", a very successful earlier novel by Allende, but it does not mean it is a mere sequel. This novel stands on its own and can be read separately as a whole. It is deeply rooted inn the South American tradition of convoluted, multigenerational family sagas. There are all the characteristic elements: the ancestral characters are eccentric, colorful and each of them has a life worth of a full novel, their labirynthine adventures form a network of separate, but intersecting stories; the circumstances of birth of the main protagonist, the narrator - Aurora, are dramatic and romantic at the same time ; the background historical events in the described period (the break of 19th and 20th centuries) are at least as full of suspense and revealing the human nature, as the personal adventures of the characters.

Aurora del Valle, at thirty, is finally able to reconstruct her past. The families involved on the maternal and paternal side could not be more different. Aurora's paternal grandparents, Paulina del Valle and Feliciano Rodriguez de Santa Cruz, are a wealthy couple from Chile, living in San Francisco, sophisticated and successful in business. Paulina is a typical matriarch, who rules the family, has a very strong personality, moods which affect everyone around her, and particular tastes and whims, one of which are the Chilean pastries, which lead her often to the small store in San Francisco's Chinatown. The owner of the store is Eliza Sommers, Aurora's maternal grandmother, who run in pursuit of an unfaithful lover from Chile to California, where she found real love in the arms of a Chinese doctor, Tao Chi'en. They are blessed with two children, Lucky and Lynn, but cursed by the absolute beauty and naivety of their daughter. Lynn gives them Aurora, and they take care of the child until Tao's death when Aurora is five; from then on she lives with Paulina and goes back to Chile, her life is changed and she almost forgets the tragedy from Chinatown, which appears only in her nightmares and she is able to consciously remember it only many years later.

The story is not limited to the grandparents; Aurora's uncle Severo and his wife, Nivea, are also richly described, strong characters who play important roles in her life. There are many secondary personas whose attributes are unusual, even if merely for the anegdotical purpose. Their fates are inseparably connected with the historical events occurring in their lifetime: the Chinese immigration and the American attitude towards them, their struggle and assimilation; the dictatorship and wars in Chile; finally, the feminist movement, or the souffrage, which is especially important in this novel, as it is discussed, and at the same time accepted and contested by showing the contrast between Nivea, a woman who argues the most for it, has the mind open wide, firm beliefs and goals which she achieves, but she is the one who leads the very traditional life in comparison to Paulina and Eliza, who, a generation older, fulfill their dreams as freely as the women of our times, but do not give a thought to feminism.
The story goes past Aurora's birth and childhood and in the last part of the book concentrates on Aurora herself, her passion for photography, her marriage and loves.

My favorite male characters are Severo and Tao Chi'en, probably because of their wisdom and good characters, which do not diminish their masculinity and charm, natural, although not actively pursued (as opposed to the pathetic Matias Rodriguez de Santa Cruz).

The main difference I see between Allende and other South American writers is that her prose is soaked with femininity, very sensual, its magic comes from the belief in intuition, supported by wisdom and strength. The women in "Portrait in Sepia" are equally colorful and varied characters as men, and all the characters are very human, with their vices and strong points, nobody is a total villain or saint. The importance of romance and love which can be destructive or move the mountains, which can be misplaced or very well chosen, is central to this novel, as well as the passion for things other than love, which is essential to the well-being and internal equilibrium and the only thing besides love which can bring happiness and sense of fulfillment.

I meant to tackle Allende's prose for a long time, and this is the first novel of hers, that I finally read - and definitely not the last one.

4 out of 5 stars STARTED OFF SLOW BUT A GREAT READ.......2007-05-21

I really liked this book. It started off a little slow but I really enjoyed it. It's a wonderful story about a Chinese-Chilean beauty and her family. Well written, and It's worth a second read.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Storytelling.......2007-04-05

This memoir serves as a sort of biography for Allende's fictional main character. Your own emotions will run the gamut while you read this book.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Review of Portrait in Sepia.......2007-01-25

This book left me with mixed feelings. I understand why she titled it "Portrait in Sepia" as I have many times looked at an old sepia photograph and it evoked such a feeling of nostalgia and wonderment. This is the feeling of the story. However, I thought the writing was uneven, I guess that's the main reason I can't give it four stars. At times she wrote like Hemingway, as others have said, and then other times Kathleen Woodwiss came to mind. I didn't particularly like the writing style of telling the story. Sometimes it was boring with over-long passages about the Chilean wars and history and then at other times I found myself turning pages late into the night. It was an interesting story and I will definately read more of Ms. Allende's works.

Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Janet Dailey portrays the spirit of the American West -- and of men and women with hearts of pride and passion -- in two unforgettable novels.

Western Man

Ever since she was a teenager, Sharon Powell has adored Ridge Halliday, a strong, proud Colorado rancher who could set her heart trembling with one glance from his lazy blue eyes. Now, working at his side on a cattle roundup is a dream come true. But Sharon has a bold new dream beyond her girlish fantasies: to win Ridge not just for a night of passion -- but for a lifetime of love.

Leftover Love

Layne MacDonald's search for her birth mother takes her to a sprawling Nebraska ranch co-owned by the brusque and distant Creed Dawson. As he teaches her to rope and ride, Layne taps into his secret anguish and realizes that she is falling in love. Only a gutsy, determined woman can melt the heart of a man as tough as Creed, and Layne vows that she will be the one.

This story is wonderfully written. Janet Dailey's wistfully woven scenes are just like watching a movie. She descriptively paints a picture of innocent passion between the two main characters and leaves you begging for more at the conclusion. I would highly recommend this book to those readers who enjoy western romance. I look forward to reading her other books.

Young Pilar Santee felt nothing but resentment for Trace, her late husband's son from his first marraige. Although the rugged Mississippi barge pilot seemed to have little in common with his urbane father. Trace's youth and virility only accentuated her aching loss.

            Book Description

In our age of instant gratification and if-it-feels-good-do-it attitudes, self-discipline is hardly a popular notion. Former missionary and beloved author Elisabeth Elliot offers her understanding of discipline and its value for modern people. Now repackaged for the next generation of Christians, Discipline: The Glad Surrender shows readers how to: discipline the mind, body, possessions, time, and feelings; overcome anxiety; change poor habits and attitudes; trust God in times of trial and hardship; let Christ have control in all areas of life. Elliot masterfully and gently takes readers through Scripture, personal stories, and lovely observations of the world around her in order to help them discover the understanding that our fulfillment as human beings depends on our answer to God's call to obedience.

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Mostly Christian BS.......2007-04-28

I enjoyed the beginning of this book very much since I am submitting my will to that of God as I understand Her. But then the book degenerated into the kind of Christian BS that it took me years to get out of my mind. I usually have great respect for books but this one offended me so much that I destroyed it. If you're not blinded by Christianity, then avoid this book.

5 out of 5 stars Down to Earth Christian living.......2005-10-20

I read alot of christian books. I have read none more times than this one. Elisabeth Elliot hits upon all the areas of one's life and applies daily principles of obedience to each; work, time, place etc...
It would not be possible for me to recommend a book more highly.

5 out of 5 stars Discipline, the Glad Surrender.......2005-03-11

I'm an avid Elisabeth Elliot reader and stumbled upon this classic while purchasing another one of her books.
Once again, Elliot goes back to the basics; outlining through her own experience and scripture what a disciplined life should look like. Her practicality and ability to share the truth in a clear and concise way are once again the foundation of her writing. It was refreshing and challenging to be reminded that a disciplined life doesn't happen spontaneously, but is rather a slow and painful process that requires daily dying to self and living for God. Elliot outlines chapter by chapter the quadrants of life and the benefits of being disciplined in each respective area. If you want to be challenged to see the eternal perspective in everyday life, this book is a must read!

5 out of 5 stars This book challenged and changed my life.......2000-09-23

This book cuts right to the chase for the Christian. Elliot puts forth the truth with a punch. I was personally challenged on how I live my life. As I read and reread this book it focused me on what is really important and that changed my life for the better. I refer to this book often and quote it more times than I can count. Excellent investment for any Christian wanting to grow and mature.

5 out of 5 stars Discipline: The Glad Surrender.......2000-03-25

This is a really good book where Elisabeth Elliot draws from her own experience in surrendering to God. She speaks about how surrendering to discipline is something that will make life better rather than giving it all up. And like all of Elliot's books, it is incredibly well written.

                    Book Description

Even before its current zenith of popularity, coffee has been a favorite beverage worldwide for centuries. To prepare coffee beans for use, human ingenuity has created hundreds of versions of coffee grinders, and this book is devoted exclusively to them. With 600 quality color photographs, the authors direct a marvelous tour of the best and most sought after examples from around the world. Accurate information about the makers and the time and place of manufacture make this a valuable resource for collectors as well as a rich visual history of over 300 years of American and European coffee grinding devices. Each example is described with its current value. Joseph E. MacMillan, a leading authority on coffee grinders and author of the MacMillan Index, writes in his Foreword to this book, Knowing the quality of these authors, I am confident that this book will be an asset to the serious collector and will be enjoyed by all of its readers for years to come.

One thing you can definitely say about this hardcover honey--you get a lot of bang for your 40 bucks: over 1,000 full-color photographs of interiors for every room in the basic home, grouped into such "Choices" as Traditional, Country, Global, and Modern, and such "schemes" as Neutral, Hot, Cool, Fresh, and Muted (where's Unscented?), plus up-close swatches for all fabrics featured in every layout, with each sample keyed to a supplier in the U.K. (where the book was produced) and/or the U.S. That's the plus side. On the minus side, both the running copy and the caption copy will likely be too pedestrian for all but the greenest interior designers (professionals or hobbyists), and regardless of the "style" they represent, the interiors shown here suffer almost uniformly from a kind of excess and overkill, almost as if they're meant to be, if not parodies, then broad-stroke pop approximations of their respective genres. Moreover, everything seems to be copping a bit from looks that were hot at least three years before the book was published. Many of the "lush" or "romantic" spreads call to mind a Versace photo shoot circa 1988, while the "rustic" and "minimal" spreads quote two of the big decorating fads of the mid-90s--Shabby Chic and Terence Conran. There is one near-perfect composition, though: flip to pages 174-75 to view a midcentury-modern drawing room so palely elegant it nearly justifies purchase of the rest of the book, especially if you're new to the trade or game of interior design. --Timothy Murphy

In this poignant memoir, noted South African playwright Athol Fugard pays tribute to two relatives who inspired him to write. His slightly older cousin Johnnie played the piano while Athol improvised accompanying words for performance pieces they called "musical stories." When his troubled cousin Garth Fugard confesses his homosexuality, Athol, realizing that he had already guessed this, had his "first experience of that most essential of all writers' faculties--intuition." The book also contains intriguing explications of the autobiographical elements in works from Blood Knot to Master Harold ... and the Boys.
