4 out of 5 stars Almost as Good as the Others.......2007-04-25

The first part of it was quite good. I was just as much in love with the characters as I was in the first two books. I enjoyed the small amusements even in the face of the adversity. The kindred Blood were more important in this book and so we got to see more of them; this was a pleasant happenstance for me because I enjoyed how Bishop wrote them. Unfortunately, the ending was less than satisfactory for me. Don't get me wrong, it was "good" as these things go but it left me with more questions than it did answers! I know the main outcome of the story but I want to know how things continued from that point. It's my understanding that Bishop has written another book with for novellas of a sort from this world. One continues the story and so I think I'm going to have to find it and devour it like I did the other books in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2006-03-12

I've read this book twice and I imagine I'll be reading it again. The first two books are great but this one is a whole new species. Daemon and Jaenelle are finally reunited and after maybe a rough start they're hot (without being vulgar)! The battle you've been waiting for finally comes to a head but it's not the usual good verses evil crap. Bishop proves how original she can be, with lots of twists and an ending that blows you away.

5 out of 5 stars Stunned and awed.......2006-02-08

Mystifying, sensual and radiating with dark magic, tests of faith and compassionate love. This book just lungs for your heart, rips it apart, just to put it back together on the very, very last page.

I admit I havent been stunned and awed over a sci-fi/fantasy novel since the first coming of G.R. Martin. And I havent ached, fought, hoped and feared for a character like the one of Daemon Sadi since I read the first chapters about Tyrion "The Imp" Lannister in Martin's Game of Thrones. I mean, how can one writer catch her reader's uninhibited emotional attention, like Anne Bishop did with this last book of her terryfic Black Jewels Trilogy?

So, let's take a closer look. Queen of Darkness actually is neatly divided in two parts. In the first two thirds it's a - sometimes a bit slow - dance of longing, hope and finally passion. As Daemon Sadi, sworn consort to Jaenelle, the powerful Witch queen who rules the Shadow Realm, reenters the stage, he not only has to overcome his own fears: Would his beloved lady still want him after all that happened before? He also has to overcome her youthful uncertainties: Will she be enough for a man who has lived for 1700 years? Or will she break him apart if she claimed his heart, like those other witch queens tried by forcing him into a slave's service? Of course love prevails - that was never in question.

Had the story ended at this point, I would have considered QoD a good fantasy romance coming to a long awaited conclusion. But Anne Bishop got me there. She really tricked me into believing, that the rest of this novel would be a swift clean-up. Many otherwise good SF&F stories tend to conlude with a good deal of disappointment when the main protagonists become too strong and powerful (I just name Eddings as the master example for way too omnipotent leading characters). But in QoD all of sudden Jaenelle and her friends really face destruction of everything they treasure. And I swear, it's not some deus et machina out-of-nowhere threat, but some evil developments of ongoing machinations and a few well-placed twists of fate. When it seems as if even the greatest sacrifice wouldnt be enough, Daemon Sadi and Jaenelle come up with a devilish plan. And betraying those who trust the most is just a minor part of it. What follows is as mind-blowing as anything I've ever read. It's phenominal in detail, painful in execution and exhilarating in conclusion.

Anne Bishop - you've really crowned yourself as one of the gendre's best with those last 150 pages of Queen of Darkness.

> "Daemon?" There was so much uncertainty in her voice.
> "Hi, sweetheart" he said, his voice husky from the effort not to cry. "I've missed you."
> Her hand moved slowly, with effort, until her palm rested against his face. Her lips curved into a smile. "Daemon."
> This time, when she said this, it sounded like a promise, like a lovely caress.

Oh, what a jewel of beauty!
Thank you, Anne Bishop. Thank you very much for this lesson about pure and unconditional love. And if it comes to that, no sacrifice can be too big. No price too high. And no faith too deep.
So, after I read the last page, it was way past midnight. I went to my beloved wife who was already sound asleep and held her tight, so tight.
What more can I say?
I'm still weeping.

5 out of 5 stars The Queen Of Fantasy.......2005-10-13

I'm sooooo glad I got this book. I had to wait 2 long, unbelievable weeks to get it. I almost died waiting. But I'm glad I waited. It's worth waiting years 4 a book like this one to come out. I'm extremely glad that Daemon returns in this book.
Any BJT book without the Sadist has a problem. That was, as far as I'm concerned, "Heir to the Shadows"'s only flaw. I luv that guy. But hey, who doesn't?
I absolutely luvved this book. This book's only problem is that the ending was soooo...unfinished. And do Lucivar and Daemon have to have this unsaid bawl so soon after they've just fixed up their relationship as brothers? But Anne Bishop makes up for that in "Dreams Made Flesh". Thank the Darkness.
Another good thing? Well, we get mentions of Lucivar and Surreal occasionally while Daemon's not out of the story. They're just plain cool. Maybe not as much as Daemon, but hey, who is?
And also, the plot. Daemon and Surreal and Wilhelmina etc coming to Kaeleer. Lucivar complaining about how his son (and Daemon's nephew and Surreal's cousin) Daemonar was a beast that everyone forgot he was Marian's son as well, Daemon, Lucivar and Wilhelmina getting drunk...opps. Shouldn't spoil the story for you so that you can read it yourself.
4 all BJT fans, this is a MUST. And just because some other people who read our reviews and then read the books were disappointed, you probably won't be. Unless you're not the average person. Cause Anne Bishop rox.

3 out of 5 stars Everything has a price...(please).......2005-06-06

How many times was this phrase in the trilogy? I am surpised the series was not named the Everything has a Price Trilogy....

To begin with, this beginning of this journey started off with so much strength, granted the S & M was a bit much, but interesting just the same (Anne Rice takes out the initial shock with her classic Sleeping Beauty Series). You come to love the characters Daemon, Saetan, and Luciver. You also just love to hate the evil witches that control them, but secretly inside are tickled that they have power over men. Yet, how can anyone write one amazing book, follow it with decent transitional book, only to have a pathetic ending with not hint of what Bishop is capable of? I don't get it.
I was extremely disappointed with the sexual tension (or lack of) between Jaenelle and Daemon. There was much anticipation for when they would finally be united; and it was like having the air slowly seep out of a balloon. It was painful to read, there was not breathtaking romance or giddy happiness. Such a disappointment. At a certain point, I no longer wanted to read the book. It took everything in me to finish it.
I find Anne Bishop to be a very talented writer with wonderful, descriptive writing. She knows how to weave a story and tell it well. She can come up with interesting characters such as the kindred animals and the various races of the world. However, she is weak when it comes to wrapping it all together. The more characters she adds, the more confusing the names become, making the reader just skim through with out getting attached to any of them.
She creates a world that is supposed to be controlled by intelligent, strong women but in the end it appears that the men still have the underlying spotlight. It is very obvious that Bishop is extremely attached to her male characters and makes them more interesting then the females. Her female characters seem to have the same catty personality, snappy, easily irritated, demanding, and horny (except for Jaenelle). Does someone have a certain impression on women?
Bishop never gives the main character, Jaenelle, her own section to portray what is in her mind. Jaenelle is always portrayed through someone else's point of view; which makes her seem unreachable and not real. One minute she is strong, next she is weak. Very confusing to know what makes up Jaenelle.
Finally, Bishop's idea of reversing roles and having women as the dominating species is not new to a storyline but fun to read. But she does not pull it off well. The men are all cautious of the women and trying to tiptoe around them, but then they are commanding women around with clever methods and witty dialogue. It also seems like the men do all the scheming on the good side, but women do all the scheming on the bad side (another one of Bishop's ideas on women?). The whole book just seemed like an excuse to write about men conquering over controlling women, but in the end they still do not have equality. Even with such domination over them, the men still love, protect and stand in awe of the women. It really contradicts itself and is hard to swallow. I honestly think Bishop is not even sure about her own characters and the role they play. It feels like she is struggling to explain why these men stay with such difficult women.
Overall, I would recommend the first book, Daughter of the Blood, the story is so very interesting. Of course if you read the first, you need to read the last two would just to have some conclusion (even thought it is weak). So reader beware do not have any expectation and you may enjoy the ride.
However, I have not given up on Anne Bishop. I anticipate more of her work. I find her writing to be engaging and filled with much potential. She may have butchered this trilogy, but I have faith in her and will give her future books a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first edition........2006-11-11

In very brief...the core book for the Over The Edge game is great. The first edition was wonderful but was vexed with spelling errors, badly done maps, and some amature illustrations. The second edition kept all the good stuff, improved the mistakes, and even added some things. It connects more cleanly with all the other books in this series by referencing them. You can get by with a first edition but just upgrade a little and buy this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Unleash Yourself.......2003-04-30

Freedom... That's what I'm talking about.

I started playing Over the Edge with its first edition. My game group and I were tired of character classes, of prefab dungeon crawls and the typical nonsense associated with the roleplaying hobby. About that time, we were also getting heavily into Philip K. Dick (We Can Remember it for you Wholesale), David Lynch (Eraserhead), William S. Burroughs (Naked Lunch) and David Cronenberg (Videodrome). We wanted a game to reflect these diverse interests; we wanted something New and Different.

We played Over the Edge. At the time, the adventure was a terribly bizzare Lynch meets Clive Barker by way of Jacob's Ladder affair.

Each time I have played this game, it has been different -- mood and style. If you can imagine it, you can do it. The setting is fantastically interesting (welcome to Interzone, for all you Burroughs fans), the mechanics are a dream of streamlined, and there are no predetermined character races, classes, whatever. If you can imagine it, you can do it.

To this day, I run OTE -- now adapted into an email game, since my group has scattered across the continent.

In short, if you need charts to have fun. If you need someone else to set limits on your creativity (be it modules or character generation guidelines) then move along. There's a game called Rolemaster with your name on it.

If you want absolute freedom and unrestrained creativity in your gaming session, this is the game for you.

For me, OTE remains the standard by which all other game systems are judged.

4 out of 5 stars Playground of desire.......2002-12-28

This is one of the great role - playing games: what else could one expect from johnathan tweet? (you know, the fellow who did 3D&D). Its choice of setting - a corrupt island - state in the mediterrainian is inspired: the various shady expatriates who gather in such places can create all kinds of strange trouble. Especially when some of them come from lost civilizations and other worlds.
This is NOT an illuminati conspiracy - theory spoof: the setting has strong internal consistency, and is derived from a more specific area of litterature than one would think from its open - ended nature: where beatnik and science fiction meet, giving birth to authors such as William Burroughs or Philip K. Dick. It has the kind of mythology suited to spies, drug addicts, the perverted, and space ghosts.
Oh, and the system actually tells you to make whatever character you like. Dont worry though, it still uses hit points.

4 out of 5 stars Simple rules, inspiring mood... what more to ask?.......2001-03-09

This game has achieved something of a cult status, and quite rightfully so. First of all, the rules system is a beauty - very simple, elegant, and innovative. Second, the laid-back, surreal mood is achieved superbly - strange conspiracies, inexplicable events, other dimensions - whatever suits your fancy. At the same time, I have to admit, that I was more impressed with the mood rather than the actual setting - an English-speaking island in the middle of the Mediterranean just somehow didn't sound plausible(!) enough. But then again, I'm European.

              Book Description

What if everything we have been told about the origins of Christianity is a lie?

What if a small group had always known the truth and had kept it hidden . . . until now?

What if there is evidence that Jesus Christ survived the crucifixion?

In Holy Blood, Holy Grail Michael Baigent and his co-authors Henry Lincoln and Richard Leigh stunned the world with a controversial theory that Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene married and founded a holy bloodline. The book became an international publishing phenomenon and was one of the sources for Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code. Now, with two additional decades of research behind him, Baigent's The Jesus Papers presents explosive new evidence that challenges everything we know about the life and death of Jesus.

              "

What if everything you think you know about Jesus is wrong? In The Jesus Papers, Michael Baigent reveals the truth about Jesus's life and crucifixion. Despite -- or rather because of -- all the celebration and veneration that have surrounded the figure of Jesus for centuries, Baigent asserts that Jesus and the circumstances leading to his death have been heavily mythologized.

As a religious historian and a leading expert in the field of arcane knowledge, Baigent has unequaled access to hidden archives, secret societies, Masonic records, and the private collections of antiquities traders and their moneyed clients. Using that access to full advantage, Baigent explores the religious and political climate in which Jesus was born and raised, examining not only the conflicts between the Romans and the Jews, but the strife within the different factions of the Jewish Zealot movement. He chronicles the migrations of Jesus's family, his subsequent exposure to other cultures, and the events, teachings, and influences that were most likely to have shaped his early years. Baigent also uncovers the inconsistencies and biases in the accounts of the major historians of Jesus's time, including Josephus, Pliny, and Tacitus. The enduring influence of these accounts in forming our most common conceptions of Jesus reveals that spin is not a new phenomenon.

Taking us back to sites that over the last twenty years he has meticulously explored, studied, and in some instances excavated for the first time, Baigent provides a detailed account of his groundbreaking discoveries, including many never-before-seen photos. The evidence he has uncovered has lead him to make shocking new assertions that threaten the conventional account of Jesus's life and death and shake the very foundation of Western thought, based as it is upon the assumption of Jesus's divinity. Another person trying to disprove something they don't want to beleive. Ovewhelming evidence proves that Jesus was crucified. Nothing in this book disproves it, because nothing in this book can stand on its own.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling and fun, yet stretching at times.......2007-08-19

I would first like to state that I really enjoyed reading this book and the very original experiences the Mr. Biagent shares. As a truth seeker, I read every text as objectively as possible simply with the hope of learning, never to reaffirm my own beliefs or scour them in the hopes of criticizing others.

The fact is that Mr. Biagent is correct when he states there is little to no extra biblical evidence of Jesus. Perhaps there would have been more had the Vatican not destroyed any and every piece of evidence that didn't jive with the Gospel accounts. Christians often like to throw out Josephus as their trump card, but even the Christian apologist Lee Strobel (The Case for Christ) admits that the infamous passage is at least partially interpolated. 2 centuries after the death of Christ there was no mention of this passage in the comprehensive debates we have on record between Justin Martyr and Origen. Not one mention of Josephus. Why? Probably because it didn't exist and was interpolated at a later time.

The Jesus Papers does seem to stretch in some areas while in others proposing fascinating theories as to the life of Jesus and his possible travels. The idea that he might have survived the crucifiction seems far fetched to me personally, but nonetheless there is confusion on the gospel accounts as to those final moments of his life and time thereafter. In my view, it's this type of confusion that leads the door open for such theories.

In a perfect world, I would read this book again for a more comprehensive review. But to sum up the first go around, it was quite enjoyable and well written. Unfortunatley, many readers are simply too slanted and grounded in their own belief system to consider such thinking.

If you have an open mind, read this book. If nothing else, you will be entertained, and even a get a little history lesson while you're at it. Perhaps you'll find the text more sound, as a whole, then I did.

My thoughts is that Baigent did do tons of research, and this is based on way more than a painting. If you are open to the possibly that Jesus may have been a wonderful "human" that could have been a great politician, this might be a good read for you. For those who can not go there, than this is not for you.
He got off track a couple times, and if he was next to me telling the story I would have smacked him. But when he got back on track I was back on board. It's a OK read, but not the greatest cover up in history.

              1 out of 5 stars Supporting illusions..........2007-08-10

So continues on the scheme to deface and devalue Jesus Christ. I say if you have something to write about, put it on paper and back it up with some facts and sound theory. Everything else, highlighting this shabby attempt to further a mudslinging campaign, is a unthinkable strech of unsupported faith.

Feasting as community, celebration, and thanksgiving--this is the subject of Holly Whitcomb's joyful work. In each chapter of the two sections Feasts and Culinary Interludes, Whitcomb provides a Christian theme on which the chapter is based, topics and questions for reflection and discussion, and mouth-watering recipes. Careful attention is also paid to creating an environment conducive to camaraderie and interaction. Don't worry about whether it is too much trouble for the host, though, as each feast is a potluck. Here are instructions for having your own miniretreat without ever leaving home.

5 out of 5 stars A very spiritual book, full of wonderful ideas.......1998-10-22

This delightful book lifts up the spiritual aspects of gathering around a table and the many ways we come together to feast with one another and God. The author is a pastor, spiritual director, workshop and retreat leader and shares many ideas which speak to the soul. Divided into sixteen "feasts" and six "culinary interludes", there are many possibilities for celebrations with birth families, chosen families and friends. The feasts reflect on theme such as life passages, wisdon, creativity, gratitude and comfort, while the interludes are reflections planned around food, but not entire feasts. As I read, I kept thinking of friends who would enjoy this book and will be giving it as gifts.

                  Book Description

The Revolutionary Congress resolved in 1777 that "the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white, that the Union be 13 white stars in a blue field representing a new constellation." Since that time, the American flag has been raised high in wartime triumph and peacetime celebration; burned in fervent protest; sewn lovingly onto quilts, caps, pillows, and bags; appropriated by the commercial sphere to sell goods as varied as cigars, designer clothing, and rock-and-roll albums; and faithfully honored every 4th of July to celebrate America's independence. Far from being a static symbol, though, the flag has been subjected to countless graphic interpretations over its 223-year history, each version owing more to the personality of the maker than to established formal conventions. And nowhere are these continual changes better viewed than in the collection of over 3,000 Stars and Stripes artifacts amassed by graphic designer Kit Hinrichs, partner in the international design consultancy Pentagram. On exhibit in 2000 at the American Institute of Graphic Arts in New York and at the San Jose Museum of Art, Hinrichs's collection was hailed as a marvel of folk history and a time capsule of cultural commentary. The collection ranges from Civil War-era banners and Native American braided moccasins to an early 20th-century "friendship" kimono and original flag art by several of world's leading designers. In its deluxe format and over 500 illustrations, LONG MAY SHE WAVE gives wide berth to the flag in all its manifestations, and the result is a stunning visual history of America's most treasured symbol.

4 out of 5 stars Such Pretty Pictures of Our Flag........2005-08-20

With the 9/11 display at the local history center, I took pictures of the tattered flag and other quilts and such there and at the Dogwood Festival quilt shows. Always, the flag is a major item in the photography exhibit.

In Tennessee, we've had some stubborn retaliations about the original flag. According to this book, the first flag was the one used in the Civil War (which the KKK) adopted, the Confederate fighting flag. I had read and related how Betsy Ross had not designed the American Stars and Stripes but merely sewed it for her friend, George Washington. It seems that many primary school teachers were instructing the young minds that Betsy Ross had indeed made it from her own design. She used her own material, true, as she was a seamstress and used what she had on hand with this request for a national flag with no preparation.

Thank God for the South being first again! Even after the American Revolution in which we were granted our freedom from the British, we continued to use the (red, white&blue) color combination (Spain has yellow and red) as no one was in a hurry to be original. They came up with something in 1777, a year after the Constitution was signed in Philadelphia.

A nearby high school has had their Rebel flag taken from them after all of the heritage and history of the school. In Nashville, a crude silver & gold statute of Nathan Bedford Forrest, as designed and welded by a local attorney, was installed out by I65 with several Rebel flags in a semi-circle. Much was made of this desecreation to a united nation, and they were told to remove them promptly. Years later, they are still in place where they can be seen by all of the travelers going South of Nashville and the locals as they use the Interstate to work.

A flag is a flag is a flag. In the review I did about Civil War poems and songs, there were some about the Stars & Stripes as important to all of the soldiers. In Knoxville, the families were split and all I knew about this dat-blame war was that it was 'brother against brother.' That's how it was in this town and the counties surrounding the Smoky Mountains as shown so clearly in the movie, 'Cold Mountain.'

We paid for a U. S. flag which had hung over the Capital building in Washington, D.C. at the urging of Robin Beard, later an ambassador to (?) He was our district representative and I had chased him down the halls with my red, white and blue hat flapping.

The flag is a symbol of this country and decorates the caskets of all veterans. It is a venerable treasure, but I let my brother take the one off my dad's, as he already had the one from his son's coffin earlier. Neither died in any war, but had been a member of the armed forces of this country. The flag is for all of us to revere and every family should own one. I know someone who said he would hang the Confederate flag out of his office window if he could get away with it, and yet his family were for the North. He is not a Rebel, nor ever would be, so I was proud of his claims, which proved to be false. He just likes to write controversial things to create some kind of action. This is such a boring, old town. The flag perks up any rally, picnic or gathering (political or non-political). Everyone in America loves that glorious old flag which stands for freedom.

5 out of 5 stars America, America ..........2002-08-06

Beautiful book of American flag items from long ago to today. What a wonderful collection and interesting items. I love just looking and looking.

4 out of 5 stars A true coffee table book.......2001-11-10

This book is fascinating. It is one you can pick up and browse a bit and become lost in the art and imagery of an icon that is so familiar we rarely take a good look at it. By sharing his collection with us, Mr. Hinrichs takes us beyond the simple stars and stripes to a visual history of our country.

Anyone familiar with graphic design should recognize Mr. Hinrichs' work. The overall presentation of the piece is incredible. I call it "the true coffee table book" because I think it is one can be opened and looked at and enjoyed a few pages at a time, and isn't that the purpose of a coffee table book?

The timing of the work is fascinating. Although initially published this spring, it is extremely appropriate for the new wave of patriotism that has swept this country since the tragic events in September.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning, inspiring, and grand..........2001-09-28

I stumbled on this title when it appeared as the centerpiece to a local store display of flag books that went up in the wake of September 11th. The stunning production and the breadth of material represented provide a truly unique insight into the power of the American flag as a symbol (of freedom, to be sure, but also as a symbol of revolution, grief, and pride). If you want the full impact of the flag's place in our history, as a graphic element that appears in everything from memorials to toys to pop art to protest banners (and more), this is the book. The text is limited but insightful, just enough to complement the tremendous variety of objects from the author's personal collection. I never failed to find new wonders on each page (including manifestations of the flag I would never have imagined), and in sum the book also amounts to a testament to American ingenuity. There's nothing else like it.

1 out of 5 stars "Long May It Wave".......2001-07-17

It is hard to see why the authors of "Long May She Wave" chose to burden it with a title that not only parades a demeaning stereotype misrepresenting objects as female, but rudely misquotes the words of our national anthem to do so. A check of the Smithsonian Institution's excellent web page on the history of the Star Spangled Banner and the drafting and publication of the National Anthem confirms that no one associated with the flag or the anthem ever referred to it as "she" as this book title so insultingly does. In documents from those patriots who made the famous banner, used it in battle, preserved it for posterity, and memorialized it in the inspiring poem that became our national anthem, the flag is sensibly termed it, not the coy and historically false "she" invented by the authors of this book. Since the the title signalled the authors' disregard for historical accuracy, I left it on the display shelf unopened.

I agree the rusty chair/furniture and hospital guerny are not very appealing. This book is good for little tips and odds and ends but not as good as Better Homes "Cottage Style" book which I have to say is THE BEST. I am glad I checked it out of the library before I bought it. It went a little to over the top on the shabby chic/flea market look for me not very elegant. The pictures are good because of professional photos but I bet if you were in a home filled with some of this stuff it could end up looking a little too flea-ish. Check it out first at the library.

Unlike some books on this topic, this one is filled with smart, chic, sensible, stylish ideas for how to repurpose flea market finds. There's nothing junky or throwaway about the ideas in this book.

                      1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!.......2002-03-05

I should have checked this out at a bookstore before I ordered it - I saw the 5 stars and went by that.
This book has nothing new to offer. And I do not see the attraction of using a hospital gurney for a bathroom vanity or stacking your towels on a rusty old garden chair. Actually, that is disgusting.
Yes, the photography is wonderful. But I've seen much better information ...
Save your money, or at least check it out a bookstore first.

5 out of 5 stars Very cool, stylish, fun.......2002-03-01

This book was written for me. When the weekend comes, I'm in my car looking for flea markets in our region. The last thing I want is to buy all our furniture and accessories from regular stores. Decorating this way is fun because it gives me a chance to be ME and create a home that isn't some Pottery Barn lookalike. This book is so fresh and current. I love it so I know my friends will. We're all just starting to get settled and buy homes, so this is one of the books that I often give for showers and housewarmings.

                      5 out of 5 stars A must-have for the flea market devotee.......2001-02-02

I could not put this book down. The first half is devoted to profiles of flea market junkies and how they use their unusual (and some are VERY unusual) finds in their home decor. The second half of the book is the ins and outs of shopping flea markets and what to do with the treasures. One of the best books in this genre.

1 out of 5 stars Design Trumps Function?.......2007-03-11

For a design book, it would be fabulous except for the fact that you need a magnifying glass in order to read it (what appears to be 5pt type set in gray). For this reason, when design and layout of the book negates the purpose (function) of the book, it is rendered useless. Rockport is well known for its beautiful graphic design books, but I have noticed several of their other titles also designed this way. Sorry I bought it, sold it for a loss.

                        1 out of 5 stars Almost unreadable.......2007-02-02

Most of the type in this book has been done using a size 6 Font which as far as I am concerned makes it practically unreadable. The content may be great, but I can't tell as I refuse to ruin my eyes trying to read type this small. It remainds me of the disclaimers that advertisers use at the bottom so you can't read them. Unless you absolutely must have this book, I would strongly advise finding another one

                        5 out of 5 stars strong examples.......2007-01-29

this is a great book, it give a very nice examples about the best graphics in the market and how it was made. It can inspire you.

1 out of 5 stars Great for Big City Designers, but not for me.......2007-01-22

I produce newsletters for non-profit's on a true shoestring budget. I am constantly searching for inspiration that is do-able on a shoestring budget (no color, no fancy paper, no long-winded discussions about the "role" of the designer - "sheesh") but found literally nothing in this book helpful to me, that makes the book worth keeping on my shelf.

If you have big budgets and staff, this book might be useful for you.

When going with two colors is a "challenge" you know that the designers whose work is being held up as the best of design really have no clue about the challenges faced by those working for needy but worthwhile agencies who cannot afford to hire "designers" but need to get information out, and attempt to do so in a visually pleasing and accessible way.

3 out of 5 stars An okay presentation of different genres.......2005-01-12

This is a decent collection of different works, offering a wide array of samples to, well, sample. Nothing too radical here, nothing too memorable, nothing too exemplary of really anything. Kind of a safe play in presenting nice designs of safe works. Worth perusing, perhaps not purchase, though?

I give them credit for including descriptions of the product and why the designers went with certain designs in the end. But, in the end, it was still just a brief look over a bunch of different brochures with nothing. If you're looking for a rainbow of styles, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars An important tool for graphic designers.......2003-01-06

Brochure Design That Works deserves a very high recommended as an important tool for graphic designers and business executives charged with the responsibility for creating effective, attractive brochures. Nationally and internationally recognized brochures demonstrated here for efficiency range from corporate client work to institutional, educational and arts brochures. Individual chapters probe each completed work for the elements which make it a success, from its initial idea to technical aspects of its production.

If you are looking for a book that you can read, study and learn from, keep looking. The type in this book is so unbelieveably small as to make it practically unreadable. If you thought that the old "Small print at the bottom of the page" was small, you should see this book. My advice, avoid it like the Plauge!
