What wonderful, powerful messages are given in each captivating vignette! Buy it, find a comfortable corner, read it, reflect, and enjoy each poignant passage!

5 out of 5 stars True Faith........2003-05-28

RAGMAN AND OTHER CRIES OF FAITH is a deeply moving collection of works concerning the Christian faith, written by Walt Wangerin, Jr. about some of his experiences as a pastor in the inner city. The title work, "Ragman" is a story that is often used as a skit/readers theatre throughout the country and is basically an updated tale about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The book includes poems, plays, sermons, and many great stories because as Wangerin writes, stories are what make a pastor. The tales are all personal and most are moving. They examine a deep and living faith that sees the work of God everywhere: from a naked, homebound parishoner who smells like urine to the painful death of a young woman to a crazy woman shooting a gun at no one in the middle of the street. This is a great book for any pastor, for anyone who has done urban missions, or for anyone looking for a book that illustrates the very real ways God is working in our world today. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Ragman.......2001-04-09

The Easter story as related by the man who follows the Ragman is moving and makes an age old story new. Older elementary school children, middle schoolers and adults listened. We all heard the story.Although it seemd familiar, it held our attention. It was an eyewitness thought provoking news account of a very special Ragman.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2000-01-03

Wangerin's Ragman is one of the most inspiring books I have read in a long time. The imagery can pull you into everyday life or to far away scenes. Ragman can stir your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Moving stories which give fresh insite into God's Love.......1999-06-22

Each short story is a new glimpse of God's love for us all. Letter to my Brother Gregory... is the best admonition for a Christian marriage that I have ever read. It clearly reveals the importance of God's role in our marriages and will surprise most who read it. I have enclosed copies of Ragman in wedding presents with a note for the Newlyweds. The title story will make you cry.

Widow Jemma is content with her life, until she comes across Luke Devetzi, who hasn't been able to stop thinking about her since their one-night stand a year ago. But wait there's more, like so many other Harlequin heroines, this girl's family is in serious financial distress. In walks the hero (Luke), or in this case one Greek with a serious axe to grind, and offers the typical proposition. When he gathers enough incriminating information against Jemma's father, he then proposes marriage in exchange for paying off her father's debts... [and get this there is always a reason behind the madness] so his children will inherit Jemma's villa, which once belonged to his family. Jacqueline Baird's Bought by the Greek Tycoon was not one of my favourite books, if you must read it, get a used copy. Don't make the mistake I did and purchase a new one.

FROM BACK COVER:

Why stop at just one night--when he can buy so
many more...?

Greek multimillionaire Luke Devetzi will do anything to get Jemma Barnes back in his bed for a night of blazing passion...

When Luke discovers that Jemma's father is in financial trouble and in need of a loan, he is willing to pay it...but only if Jemma agrees to become his convenient wife!

If you are familiar with Jacqueline Baird's books, then you either hate her heroes or you love them, no in-betweens. The hero in this book, Luke, although he's demonstrated some ruthlessness, isn't as overbearing as some of her other heroes...

Luke met and fell in love with Jemma a year ago, they had a one-night stand, but he kicked her out after he thaught she was married...

Jemma was feeling very vulnerable on the night she met Luke, she was missing her husband, so was susceptible to Luke's charms on the night they met, causing her to act in a way that she normally wouldn't...

Luke and Jemma met up again at her sister's birthday party and the attraction is still there. Luke uses the fact that Jemma's family need money to get her into his life...

I really liked the heroine, Jemma, she was really in love with her first husband and he loved her too. And the love and respect she showed his parents was really quite touching. Luke was likable, but what he did to the silver necklace that was a gift to Jemma from her husband was really mean--I understand why he did it-- but it was still mean. Luke's Grandfather--Theo, was a sweetheart and really quite funny. What I also appreciated about this book was that, although Luke and Jemma had a one-night-stand, she didn't get pregnant!!

The attraction between Luke and Jemma was very intense, and the love scenes simply sizzled. All in all this was a very good book, and at times amusing.

This has to be one of the worst 'romances' I have ever read. The male (cannot call him a hero) believes the worst of the the female (she is not a heroine, either) for all but the last few paragraphs of the book. He not once but twice refuses to honor a promise made to her (to basically pay her for services rendered). He forces her to prostitute herself for money she needs for a charity, then refuses to pay. She knew his past with money, so I don't understand why she would make a second deal with him. There was no love (acknowledged by either one) with the sex between them. Only at the last few pages does he say he 'loves' her and actually expects her to forgive his atrocities just for those three words when none of his actions up to then speak of love.
I keep giving Julia James chances because her first book was good. But unless her next books receives rave, glowing reviews, this is the last book by her I'm reading. I would give this no stars, but Amazon won't let me. There are no redeeming qualities to this book. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars No simple read.......2007-06-27

Priest delivers in usual 'more meat on the steak' fashion. The ride was worth the price of admission. A pity he isn't doing any current comic book work.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Trouble.......2006-03-10

After reading Book 2, I was not looking forward to finishing this trilogy. There are numberous flaws that are readily writen about in that book's review. However, I'm glad I got to Book 3.

As an long time comic reader, I enjoy the novelization of these heros, but only if they're taken seriously. The author met that criteria in this book. Those of us that know the Green Lantern stories from the 1980s through present day will love to see how the author respects the characters and situations. Those new to the stories will enjoy how the tale unfolds.

One caveat: you need to read Books 1 and 2 for the whole story to make sense. The author answers questions left by those two. However, not reading those two won't take away from the story's impact.

Enjoy!!!

If you look up the word lion in the dictionary on your desk, odds are you'll learn it's a large, carnivorous mammal. The entry may note that it's the emblem of Great Britain, too, and mention courage and literary acumen, but you won't find out that two lions pulled the chariot of the goddess Cybele when she took it out for a spin. To learn that, you'd need to flip through The Woman's Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects. At the top of each page are drawings of the symbols discussed on that page. This well-organized tome is fascinating reading with a female-centric spin. Thus, poppet is not just a doll, but one used by witches as a proxy for the person they wanted to harm. Vase symbolizes the Earth Mother's womb, and, according to author Barbara G. Walker, the Greek word for vase, pithos, was mistakenly translated as pyxis, box, in that tale about Pandora.

Book Description

This fascinating guide to the history and mythology of woman-related symbols features:

Three-Rayed Sun The sun suspended in heaven by three powers, perhaps the Triple Goddess who gave birth to it (see Three-Way Motifs).

Corn Dolly An embodiment of the harvest to be set in the center of the harvest dance, or fed to the cattle to `make them thrive year round' (see Secular-Sacred Objects).

Tongue In Asia, the extended tongue was a sign of life-force as the tongue between the lips imitated the sacred lingam-yoni: male within female genital. Sticking out the tongue is still a polite sign of greeting in northern India and Tibet (see Body Parts).

Cosmic Egg In ancient times the primeval universe-or the Great Mother-took the form of an egg. It carried all numbers and letters within an ellipse, to show that everything is contained within one form at the beginning (see Round and Oval Motifs).

1 out of 5 stars Venomous Bias.......2005-04-29

I was dismayed to discover Walker's acidic tone towards the Judeo-Christian religious tradition in this book. She seems to think that the fact that many Jewish and Christian symbols happen to have origins in Pagan cultures is somehow discrediting to Christianity and Judaism. In this and in some of her other writings, she makes it clear to the reader that it is her opinion that Judaism and Christianity are nothing more than a bastardized form of pseudo-Paganism in which the role of the woman has been subordinated. Merely because Judaism and Christianity borrow heavily from Pagan tradtions does not mean that they are not valid forms of spirtuality. It is all well and good to be proudly Pagan, but it is entirely unacceptable to denigrate other religions to be so. A true scholar must be strive to be as objective and unbiased as possible in their work, and Walker fails spectacularly in this respect. I do not reccommend this book to anyone, as Walker's blatant bias makes me highly suspicious of her scholarship, and my suspicions seem to be confirmed by other reviewers.

2 out of 5 stars Just get the Myths and Secrets one instead.......2005-01-06

I LOVED her other book, Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, and so I snapped this one up, but was hugely disappointed by it. The content and the research in it are just not as good. And the artwork that accompanies stuff is not very good, nor is there very much of it.

Frankly, I think this book was churned out in order to cash in on the success of the Myths and Secrets book. A lot of the material in it is a re-hashing of that book, which I personally can't recommend enough. It really realigned my whole perception of all different kinds of religious and cultural stuff, and I sincerely recommend that if you're wondering whether or not to buy this book or that one, go get the Myths and Secrets one instead. I don't think this adds substantially to her work.

5 out of 5 stars Symbolisims.......2004-03-20

I like the book because it had wonderful symbols. They were very decreptive about them, including the flowers, trees, and animas.

1 out of 5 stars So Much Wishful Thinking, and Half-Baked Scholarship.......2004-03-05

I cannot recommend this book to anyone. From my perspective, it is an example of the kind of wishful thinking that passed for scholarly writing on feminist spirituality in the 1980s.

The book does not seem adequately sourced, and some of the alleged connections Walker writes about seem conjured up out of whole cloth. Her bibliography is unimpressive, too.

This is the kind of writing that gives women's spirituality a bad name. And what distresses me the most is that Walker's material is picked up and regurgitated over and over again in so many subsequent books in this subject area. Too many naive readers take everything in this book as gospel truth, simply because Walker has said it is so. And they are using this as a primary source!

At core, this book is embarrassing to me. I do hope some 3rd-wave feminist with scholarly credentials and training comes along to write a badly-needed better version.

This "eating book" is based on the New Beverly Hills Diet, which isn't a diet as much as a set of food combining rules. You can eat butter, cream, barbecued spareribs--whatever you want--says Judy Mazel, as long as you combine and time foods in a particular way. For example, start every day with fruit, and once you eat something other than fruit, eat no additional fruit that day. Once you eat protein, eat at least 80 percent protein for the rest of the day.

If you're following the New Beverly Hills Diet, these recipes take the guesswork out of food combining. Carbohydrate soups and protein soups are in separate sections, for example. Many recipes are exotic and appropriate for a dinner party, such as Puff Pastry Torte with Leek and Mushroom Filling and Sole in an Envelope with Shallot Cream. Others are easy to prepare, such as Chicken Parmesan. Mazel recommends using only fresh vegetables and herbs. Be careful if you're watching fat and cholesterol, though, because these recipes are often high in both. The sauces, soups, pastries, and pasta dishes liberally use butter, heavy cream, and egg yolks (sometimes all three in one recipe). No nutritional breakdown is included.

        Book Description

Included in this cookbook are: *Consciously Combined basics, sauces, seasonings, breads, soups and salads *Exciting vegetable and meat main dishes *Directions on how to convert favorite recipes *A guide to eating at favorite restaurants *Restaurant adaptions from the country's best kitchens Mazel has already shown you that you can have it all: hamburgers and hipbones, cheesecake and cheekbones. In "Recipes to Forever", she shows you how to cook it all. It's a must-have for every Born-Again Skinny kitchen or anyone looking for a healthier way to eat.

4 out of 5 stars It really works........1999-06-17

I found this book easy to read, easy to understand and easy to follow. It enlightened me on which food groups to eat and when. Although it is a 35 day diet, and I only made it through the first 17 days, I still lost a whopping 14 pounds!!! This book also shows, how to eat right without being on the designated diet. So, at anytime you may deviate from it, choose supplemental foods, or go on your own. I did find the recipes in this book a little expensive and that you would benefit greatly if you lived near a store which sold fresh fruit, so you can buy it daily. The concept of the diet can be used day to day even if you're not dieting. This book is a great start to eating right. It has a daily motivational reading, that keeps you interested and helps you keep shedding those pounds. You can eat steak, baked potatos, butter, corn on the cob, and much more!!

          Book Description

Throughout history the attraction of owning silverware has been based both on its aesthetic qualities and on economic considerations: not only can silver be fashioned into an enormous variety of articles, but regardless of changes in taste and fashion silverware retains its intrinsic value as bullion. Articles made of silver may be treasured for their historical associations, as heirlooms, as the work of an eminent maker or designer, or in some cases simply as readily collectable articles that were formerly in everyday use. This dictionary is devoted to the silverware of Great Britain since around 1500 (including Ireland up to 1921) and North America from the Colonial era to the present. It is comprehensively illustrated and contains 2,373 entries, including definitions of types of article, specific named examples, styles, methods of fabrication and decoration, and biographical entries. Cross-references lead the reader to related topics, and bibliographical citations provide a guide for further reading on specific topics or important pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book!.......2003-04-05

I can't say enough about Chapter 4 in this book, entitled, "The Best Sewing Techniques." I have already used this chapter to make a blouse. The author's instructions are SUPERIOR to those of pattern manufacturers. I've never taken a class on shirts/blouses and have always relied on the instructions included in a pattern. Not this time around! I used the author's detailed and very easy to understand instructions along with the beautifully detailed colored photos to construct a blouse just this week. The biggest difference in this shirt and others I've made is definitely the collar and facing. Makes you wonder why pattern companys don't let you in on these VERY EASY changes we can all make to make our blouses look tailored instead of homemade.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect companion to David Page Coffin's Shirtmaking.......2001-11-02

Currently my favorite sewing book. Make that my favorite book. It's very useful for sewing shirts as well as blouses. The most useful chapter is no.4, The Best Sewing Techniques. As opposed to Mr. Coffin's illustrations, (another excellent book) this one has very clear color photographs of each technique and it's various steps. Her techniques appear to come from the within the industry and should be part of any serious sewer's arsenal. The instructions are some of the clearest I've come across. Don't sew another yoked shirt/blouse until you've looked at the technique shown here. Ms. Long's work, shown as examples, is absolutely flawless. The beauty is in the crisp execution of details such as welt pockets and plackets. This book inspires me to improve and perfect my sewing skills towards that of Connie Long's.

5 out of 5 stars very informative book.......2001-07-16

In 15 years of amateur home sewing, I've always avoided blouses because I could never make them look good. I'm looking forward to trying the techniques in this book. They seem to address exactly the problems I've always had.

          5 out of 5 stars A very helpful book for women's blouses.......2000-10-03

This book is very good but in my opinion it is not a reference book on blouses. I would recommend that someone read first a good book on shirts such as "Shirtmaking" by D.P. Coffin and then use this book to add details found usually in women's shirts and blouses.

The first three chapters are about choosing the right pattern and style, selecting fabrics and notions and fitting the pattern. Chapter 4 is focusing, among others, on: * Neckline Finishes (shaped facings, faced facings, bias facings and knit ribbing) * Sewing Collars (collars without a back facing, knitted collar, collars with a stand) * Sewing a Yoked Blouse (standard shirt yoke, blouse-type yoke which is worn mostly by women) * Sewing the Sleeves (flat-sleeve construction, round-sleeve construction) * Plackets (Continuous-lap sleeve placket, simplified sleeve opening) * Cuffs (standard cuff, no-cuff cuff) * Machine-Stitched Hems (turned and stitched hems, rolled hems) * Closures (hidden closure, buttonhole placement and size, sewing the buttons, gooks and eyes)

The instructions are clear and detailed, accompanied by many photographs and really helpful tips that I believe make this a very good book on blouses even for a beginner sewer. I sewed myself a blouse with a blouse-type yoke and used the technique for faced facings (the latter technique eliminates the need to finish the facings edge with a serger) and the bias-tricot bound seam to bind and finish the armhole. The results were very professional and my blouse looks as beautiful on the outside as on the inside! I highly recommend this book to any sewer!

4 out of 5 stars or maybe three and a half stars..........2006-10-07

            Pro's
            - lots of photos.
            - apartments are small, under 90 square meters.

            Con's
            - this feature where this orange dotted "box" is put insde the pic to mark an area of something "cool" is really not so cool. spoils the book, imo.

Not the best book about small space living and interiors but not bad at all for the price. Three and a half stars.

2 out of 5 stars Big pictures --- Little substance.......2006-08-09

While these sort of books offer lovely, crisp photographs, they contain very few ideas that are realistic when you're on a tight budget...or if you have children and safety is a concern. This book in particular didn't take safety or budget into concern from my perspective.

Martha Stewart has a book geared at storage solutions and organizations that is actually practical and affordable that I have turned to time and time again. Truly, organization is the key to living in a small space successfully.

Your best bet is to save your money on this book and take a peek at something geared toward organization and stylish storage.... and visit your local IKEA for instead. Regardless of your personal style preferences, IKEA stores are set-up in pre-furnished rooms that really let you test their practicality. If you aren't near an IKEA location, IKEA's website has an entire section devoted to design ideas PLUS you can request a FREE catalog that is jam packed with storage solutions and furniture arrangements that are intended to maximize space when it's at a minimum. The objects themselves aren't important when it comes to your personal style, so focus on placement and use of space rather than whether or not you like that particular cabinet or couch and you'll do great. For example, if country is your style--when you find a room layout that you like, just replace the leather mid-century sofa with a fluffy, cotton duck one instead. IKEA has really warmed up their styles lately so I'm sure you'll find something that works for you when browsing their catalogs and website.

I've kept several of the last few IKEA catalogs at a cost of ZERO dollars for color schemes, hints on how to use light and texture, fun with fabrics and furniture arrangement with oodles of storage. Hold onto them because they run out fast.

If you are designing with practicality and comfort in mind but aren't near an IKEA store, I urge you to visit the IKEA website and browse their interactive catalog for hints..then print up a page that inspires you. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Good resource for Interior Designers and aficionados.......2006-03-22

Beautiful, funky and cutting edge interiors. High quality paper. Great reference because it also includes floor plans and elevations. Super cool and a great bargain for such a beautiful book.

2 out of 5 stars A nice little fantasy trip.......2006-03-20

This is a wonderful book to read if you want to imagine yourself living somewhere exotic in an uncluttered space with minimal (or no) possessions.

It's all about design and I'm sure design mavens and architect-groupies will love it.

I picked it up looking for "good ideas" (as advertised in the title) I could use in, or adapt for, my small condo. In my real life as a middle-class working person living in the US. I found none.

Pretty pictures, though, of some inventive solutions to putting bed, bath, kitchen, and sitting facilities into small areas.

            5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!.......2006-03-20

Of all of the design and architecture books in my library, I have to confess that this is the only one that I have ever read cover to cover. This wonderful book contains 51 gorgeously photographed small living spaces from 150-968 square feet - each one a jewel box of contemporary minimalist design. Here the art of living has been reduced to the basic essentials of ample light, beautiful design, clever storage, and minimal possessions. Each project is sparingly and simply described, with architectural drawings included in most sections. What a joy it is to be immersed in this book, imagining myself as a sophisticated debutante living in the chic apartment in Shepherd's Bush London, or a modern day hermit communing with the Divine in the Itamar Cave in Jerusalem, or an expatriate writer on a long, but fruitful sabbatical at Darmos House in Spain. Ah the joy of the simple life - unfettered by the weight of too many dusty possessions or heavy ornamentation - pure bliss!
