Book Description
A sinking British ship, her crew and passengers—men and women alike—ruthlessly murdered at the hands of a French privateer. This is the nightmare Ramage and the crew of the Calypso stumble upon while engaged in a sweep for freebooters in the waters off Jamaica. Supported by his men in a thirst for righteous vengeance, Ramage sets sail to bring the murderers to justice.

The Invincible Ramage.......2005-12-03
This novel in the Ramage series provides another twist to the exploits of the good Captain. While sent to patrol and seek out pirates and privateers in the souhern carribean, he captures a French frigate and discovers a tempting opportuntity
on the Dutch island of Curacao. Finding the island on the verge of anarachy, threatened by angry privateers and rebellious locals, he accepts the surrender of the island so that he may try to save it from disaster. The story moves quickly and maintains interest right through the treacherous conclusion. One of the better novels in this series.
Misplaced history.......2002-10-28
This novel, written as No. 9 in the series, is based on historical events occurring in 1800. It follows No. 6 (Ramage & the Guillotine) which seemed to be set in 1801, and is one of the sequels to No. 7 (Ramage's Diamond) which seems to be set historically in 1804. Dudley Pope seemed to have a major problem setting his later novels in proper historical order. Readers continuing the series should be aware of that problem. The novels must be read in numerical order for development of Ramage's career, love life, etc., but after No. 7 they seem to drop back to circa 1799 and then progress forward again to 1804. Among other things, the series puts the frigate Calypso in continuous service with the same crew from circa 1799 to 1805. The frigate and crew become caught in a time warp. The novels are OK to read in numerical order if one ignores the technical and historical glitches.
The present novel has an interesting plot, starting with discovery of French brandy in the ship's water casks. Ramage is sent off to deal with privateers operating out of the Dutch island of Curacao. As in other novels in the series, Ramage replaces a real life Royal Navy captain, in this case the captain of the frigate Néréide. He continues his extraordinary exploits, destroying enemy frigates, capturing privateers and, in fact, capturing an island. There is enough action thrown in to keep the novel interesting, but I sometimes wish for a more believable character. In contrast, Richard Woodman's novels in the Nathaniel Drinkwater series are diligent in correctly following historical events (Woodman provides dates on his chapter headings), and Drinkwater is a much more believable hero.
More freebooters in the Caribbean.......2001-08-24
In #9 Capt. Ramage continues his Caribbean cruising, now out of the Jamaica Station under a purely political Admiral (i.e., one with no practical experience or understanding). This is the first book in several with any gory slaughter in it, here either privateers' victims or a long, running fight ashore. By planning--glimpses of which we get to see and guess their purpose--and always by surprise, Ramage avoids taking losses and instead metes them out to his enemies. Still, Ramage manages several more of his special bloodless surprise conquests that earn him citations in the Naval Gazette. As his conquest of another beautiful foreign lady who falls within eyeshot would not! The theme of this novel is honour, what it is, who has it, and what it requires. We get to see Ramage as a diplomat on his own--a role not previously seen even when he was "Governor" in Book 4. Plain to see is the difference between honorable and dishonorable conduct as the situations between the Dutch, British, and French--and various privateers or rebels--suddenly alter, and then shift again. The key is that governments are never honorable and steadfast, only some of their "regretful" citizens. Curiously, the one map doesn't name the islands featured here, the Dutch Aruba and Curacao, leaving readers as blind as if we were chartless in shoal water! The book's wrap-around cover art is different from that shown above on amazon.com (= picture from #8), but no more sensical (a frigate in pursuit with no headsails set?). As ever, Dudley Pope is precise and accurate in his descriptions, although it certainly helps in following the ship manuevers if you know the difference between starboard and port tacks and remember where Pope says the wind is from.

John Hunt Morgan...The Kentucky Cavalier.......1998-08-04
John Hunt Morgan....This name stirred up the passion of both Northerners and Southerners, and in his biography of the General, James Ramage does an excellent job in telling us why. The Morgan in Ramage's biography comes across to us the readers, as not very religious...deeply rooted in the Southern lifestyle of the times, and as a careful soldier. I found two Morgan's in the book...The Morgan who was at his most successful after the period of his first wife's death, and
the Morgan who seems to lose interest in the war after his second marriage, when failure would always seem to bear its ugly head whenever the General attempted to do anything. Ramage has done a good deal of research, rooting out letters to and from the General, with special emphasis on Morgan's relationship with his second wife. This research helps us to understand the transformation of Morgan as the war went on, and helps the reader to ultimately understand this diverse per! sonality of our great internal conflict. The chapter on the death of Morgan is probably the best in the book, as Ramage tries to put down the various stories and myths that have cropped up over the years. All in all, I found Ramage's work a good read, and I recommend it to all Civil War enthusiasts.

Another Great Book.......2007-02-21
Ballerina Kate Kimball returns home to hopen a dance studio. She hires Brody O'Connell whom she meets in her mother's store, a widower with a young son named Jack. Since the death of his wife Jack has been his only priority but he finds himself attracted to Kate. Kate, herself is attracted to Brody. A very good story. The charactors a wonderfully well written with flaws but lovable.

A NEW DREAM
She's turned her back on glamour and fame and Kate Stanislaski Kimball had come home to begin a new life. The only thing more perfect than the beautiful - dilapidated - building she'd bought for her new dance school was Brody O'Connell, the frustrating, surprisingly fascinating contractor she'd hired for the renovation.
A man didn't often come across a woman as gorgeous, sensuous, provocative... and utterly irritating as Kate. But Brody was determined to resist her effortless allure. She was Natasha Stanislaki's pampered, perfect daughter, and not at all the right woman for him. But every fiber of his being longed to make her his...

Excellent, as the whole series was.......2004-11-22
I have followed the Stanislaski series and loved every book. This one was no different. There was resistance, there was flirtation, and there was love and passion. This series has restored my faith in the existence of love, or at least in people that appreciate love. I recommend this to anyone looking for a good romance, but I'm warning you, you might not be able to put it down! (This book is enjoyable on its own but better if the rest of the series is read too)

Customer Reviews:
Terrible.......2007-08-26
This book is terrible. While I enjoyed the first Ghost in the Shell, I was hugely disappointed in this "sequel." The storyline is convoluted, confusing, and just about makes no sense. It is chock full of technobabble that I suppose a hardcore cyberpunk fiction fan might comprehend but for an average anime fan, just goes way over my head. At least with the first GITS you could understand what was happening. Not so here. The characters are flat, lifeless, and devoid of any humanity, despite being very sexily drawn. All in all, this story is a colossal bore and a chore to read through. The only redeeming quality is the visuals, with truly outstanding hand and computer rendered art. If it weren't for the visuals I would give this book one star. All this shows that style does not make up for a lack of substance. This book is a piece of junk that I couldn't even sell for a lousy 3 bucks. I guess other people have caught on to how bad this clunker is. Avoid this title at all costs!
Ditto.......2007-07-03
The art and graphics are wonderful but the story is difficult to stay into, if you like hot manga chicks with wild sci fi visuals get this but just expect the story to be very dense.
Pretty computer graphics, but really no story.......2007-02-07
The original "Ghost in the Shell" was a watershed graphic novel that defined the standard for the genre, but this sequel just doesn't hold a candle to the original. A huge disappointment.
The original explored cybernetics, cyborgs, the nature of consciousness in the body, and tossed in such political realities as government-sponsored wetwork, supersoldiers, and intragovernmental infighting.
In this wan and thin sequel, Motoko fights computer viruses and mentally joins with a new silicon-based life form.
Frankly, that COULD be an interesting story, but it's pretty slow, tedious going here. We get page after page of Motoko shouting anti-virus commands to her robot assistants while we gaze up her skirt.
Oh, and Motoko regularly shifts her consciousness between bodies. But don't worry, all of the bodies are Manga Barbie-dolls with pneumatic boobs and Shirow gives you an gynecological exam of each one.
Shirow uses a LOT of computer generated and enhanced graphics in this book, and also there's a greater percentage of colored pages than the original, but it doesn't help.
A lot of the images from the original book have glued themselves securely in my mind because of their outrageousness and verve, but after about forty up-the-skirt shots of Motoko's various android twats in this book, I'd had enough.
Shirow has unfortunately dumped this series right into the "Vampirella Reborn" genre.
The overall effect is like a swimsuit issue of a magazine. Nice to look at, but you'd feel pretty slimy going back for a second look.
this is GREAT.......2006-07-13
I don't care if the format of the pages is not in full comic book page size. I don't care if the story is unusefully intricated and totally ununderstandable (at least for a common human being with only one bachelor....) : Masamune Shirow is THE MASTER and his ART is GREAT. You look at the computer colored pages: they're GREAT. You look at the b&w pages: they're even BETTER! The details and the design is amazing! I hope soon a fully large format b&w pages will be edited!
Important and beautiful, but confusing - and too many crotch shots.......2006-04-17
A dense work that gets a little bogged down in techno-cyber talk and descriptions of the intricacies of computer virus defense software rather than story or character. The constant switching of the heroine's physical form is a neat plot element, but it does make it hard to identify with anyone in the story. There are just too few handholds to guide the reader through the stories. And, the endless sexy crotch-shot drawings of the heroine's various android bodies in mid-karate-kick actually became a little uncomfortable for me when my girlfriend was in the room.
Book Description
The “evil eye” — the stare that portends doom — has been noted since time immemorial, appearing in some form in virtually every culture. The sages of Kabbalah understood that seemingly harmless envious glances and looks of ill will are, in fact, anything but benign. These looks focus sinister forces on the object of their gaze, have tangible physical effects, and can actually halt progress toward one's potential in every area of life. The red string has been used for centuries by Kabbalists to counter these dark forces. Worn on the left wrist, the string seals protective energy within while intercepting negative energy from without. This best-selling book, the first in Yehuda Berg’s popular Technology of the Soul series, explains how and why this simple tool for healing and self-defense has worked for 5,000 years, and in the process gives a simple, clear overview of what Kabbalah is and is not.

Red String Enlightenment.......2007-06-25
I had a beautiful experience having a "red string" ceremony with two other seekers whom I had shared a previous Kabbalah resource with. It was extraordinarily moving. I wish the instructions had been more explicit as I "wasted" some string by cutting it in thirds (there were of us). It should have been more specific about how to "measure" the string size before cutting.
Questioable results.......2006-11-04
If one could get their mind to belive what this book offers, it would be great. Without that the book is just another self-help book on the shelf.
read first then order the string.......2006-08-29
i know many readers were disappointed that the string didnt come with the book but i am glad that it doesn't. the red string is not a fashion statement. if you read the book and still feel compelled to wear the string than order it. the wait is that much sweeter.
The Red String.......2006-08-14
This book is a really good book: It really makes one stop and think about your life...and how in the simplest way you can change for the better. The book explains the purpose of the Red String..which is not included...but you can order online. It also gives a lot of good insight...this is just a start in learning about Kabbalah...which I plan to do is learn more about so I can become a better person.
A wonderful book!!!.......2006-08-05
This is a very interesting book. I fully recommend it to anyone looking for spiritual answers. You may not agree with everything -- and that's OK. But take whatever you get from this book and simply make it yours. You don't have to become a follower of Kabbalah to put some of the ideas into practice. Try it. You may like it.

At Wildwood, the popular Portland, Oregon, restaurant, chef Cory Schreiber cooks dishes closely tied to local foods of the Pacific Northwest. A fifth-generation Oregonian and fourth-generation restaurateur, he is devoted to the plump oysters of Yaquina Bay, wild mushrooms from the slopes of the Cascade Mountains, and juicy berries from the Willamette Valley--all recognized as world-class ingredients.
Wildwood the cookbook holds your attention in the kitchen and out. Schreiber shares his family's history, starting in 1864, when his great-grandfather settled in Oysterville. He describes his experience as a boy catching a 24-pound wild king salmon he could barely hold on the line, then explains why its firm flesh is prized and recommends poaching or grilling as the best ways to cook such firm-fleshed fish.
Through his recipes, Schreiber shows how to build on the glorious flavor found in the best-quality ingredients. His Tomato and Fennel Vinaigrette is based on Summer Tomato Sauce seasoned with garlic and fresh herbs. Olive Oil-Braised Bell Peppers use the Mediterranean technique of simmering vegetables in oil until they are meltingly tender. While Schreiber spotlights the foods of Oregon, cooks everywhere can emulate his respect for local ingredients and for the land and waters that produce them. --Dana Jacobi

True Oregon flavor - a must Pinot Noir fans.......2003-03-11
One of the best cookbooks in my collection.
What's really interesting to me is that almost every recipe in the book goes very well with a nice Oregon Pinot Noir.
Well-received gift.......2001-11-26
Let me be clear - I have never laid eyes on this book. I bought it based on the description for a friend who lives in CA but is from the Northwest and is an avid cook. She absolutely loved it and continues to rave about it. Based on that, I give it a 5.
Flavorful, earthy food.......2001-01-30
This beautiful book has been the source of wonderful meals, inspired by the deep, imaginative recipes, exploring the best of the Pacific Northwest. Schreiber puts his own interesting spin on classic flavor combinations. Recipes are complex, but are easily broken down into do-able steps. They are not overly chefy, and have been well tested for home kitchens. This was one of my favorite cookbooks of the year, and I own a lot of cookbooks.
Divine Cooking with Earthy Roots.......2000-08-11
Many have been the times I have savored the tastes of Cory Schrieber's Pacific Northwest cooking at his top Wildwood restaurant. To see his philosophy, outlook and family enveloped in these very real recipes featuring the foods and flavors of this rich region is simply a delight! The way Cory weaves local and history into the regional introductions of sensuous, but palate-cleansing dishes is simply amazing.
This is a book to be cooked from and curled up with on a rainy afternoon for a good read, and then to be drawn from the shelf again, and again.

Excellent Art Resource.......2004-06-20
As a graphic designer, I keep a reference library for ideas. This book is one of my absolute favorites. I've used this book for color schemes, concepts, composition and more. Smoking subject matter aside, this book is a beautiful display of something that is an artform in it's own right.
Pack it up, quit now and buy the book instead........2004-06-18
Graphic designers will love this book with its colorful comprehensive overview of cigarette containers from around the world. There must be several hundred packs shown (and beautifully printed with each pack having a drop shadow so they look like they're floating on the page) and the authors have managed to arrange them into meaningful chapters. The chapter dealing with 'Patriotism by the Pack' has some great designs, the Tobacco Alternatives Company issued Glory brand (1996) with a flamboyant use of the Stars and Stripes, the White House produced an elegant pack in the Eighties, a flip-top box in cream with just the President's seal on the front.
Now that smoking has lost its cache the last chapter 'The Anti-Packs' has some really offbeat stuff, Trim brand from the Cornell Drug Company in 1960 suggested on its front that it 'curbs your appetite', aimed at the ladies, naturally. Pure brand in 1995 would have you believe that because their product contained no additives you could puff away in good health. I'm not convinced that all the weird brands shown here were serious attempts at creating mass sales though.
Thibodeau and Martin have written a fascinating study about pack art (and the packs are the dominant items in the book) and though there are other books on the subject the only one that might be comparable is Chris Mullen's 'Cigarette Pack Art' (ISBN 0861367898 or 0312138423) which came out in 1980. Written from a European perspective it perhaps has more historical pack material shown and a lot more text.
Oh yes, the book jacket points out that neither of the authors smoke!

OK, so the fancy packaging is cool, but aren't we trying to get rid of all the cigarette and tobacco advertisements through commercials and other ads? "A Branded World" by Michael Levine defines the real meaning of branding to make a company successful without the smoky mess. Once you've read "A Branded World" you will find yourself inhaling, "finally, a book worth reading."
Cigarette Art when Smoking was King.......2001-01-10
I'm not a habitual cigarette smoker, but I'm a sucker for vintage packaging design, as well as books about such design. This medium-sized "coffee table" book is well produced and would be an inspiration to anyone interested in graphic design, typography, advertising, and of course smoking. Anthropologists may also be interested in the use of similar icons (i.e. airplanes, reclining women and tigers) that pop up on cigarette packages from a wide range of different countries/cultures. It's a sad thing that you don't find such sumptuous art on cigarette packages anymore - this book shows that the golden age of cigarettes (and also of product design) is long gone. But I'm glad it's being showcased in this book to share with later generations!
Book Description
Developed by America's pioneer women in the early 1800s, candlewicking used only the simplest of materials readily to hand -- muslin, cotton, and the thread from which it derived its name, the cotton twist yarn used as a wick in candlemaking.
Traditional fabrics are still used today, though now they are of better quality and the variety of threads available is extensive. The traditional colour of cream is still most favoured, although some subtle colours are now creeping in.
The twenty-four designs in this book by an Australian teacher of the art are divided into groups suitable for the family room, the living room, the sewing room, the bedroom and the garden. There are designs to suit all levels of ability, from beginner to advanced. All are heavily illustrated with patterns, designs and photographs, and all necessary techniques and stitches are fully explained.
Book Description
This attractively illustrated manual for art students and amateur artists shows how to master techniques that maximize the dramatic effects of color, texture, and composition in watercolor. These skills are then applied to the familiar subject of the home and its surrounding yard and garden. Heavily illustrated with example sketches, step-by-step sequences showing paintings in progress, and the author’s own superb watercolors, this very useful volume looks at several town dwellings and country cottages, and points out architectural details that make them interesting as subjects for watercolor artists.

17th century French royal Garden design.......1999-01-13
This is a specialized book for those interested in architecture and/or period garden design from 17th century France. Marly was a favorite creation of The Sun King, Louis XIV. Built in a secluded narrow valley not far from Versailles, it tried to create an informal palace where the King and favored courtiers could live a more informal existance not governed by strict court formality as practiced at Versailles. The main features were a Royal Pavilion for the King and his family and a series of small square buildings for quests from the court. The iconology was based on the Zodiac. The facades of the buildings featured "painted" architucture. But the main features were the gardens.
This book has a very brief description of the Royal Pavilion with two elevations and partial floor plans. The real focus is on reproductions of hundreds of color drawings (created in the 17th century) of the multitude of walks, bosquets, fountains, pools and open air "rooms" created by the "gardener king" Louis XIV. There are even multiple plans of the same sites as they evolved over time.
A well done volumn, but again of very specialized interest. There are very few books on Marly as a chateau, as it did not long survive the French Revoultion. Today the site is used a public park, but the elaborate gardens, statues and palace are long gone.

I really like this book........2001-10-22
I can appreciate the work of others and just think this book is beautiful. I get a great sense of how others express themselves by the way this book is presented. The cover and pages are wonderful quality paper and the images are crisp and freshly laid out. I am not a super power pro but as I mentioned, I appreciate and enjoy how artists perceive their world. Nice big book with the quality to be placed on anyone's coffee table.
Creative Insight.......2000-09-28
Like most others in the Rockport series this book has an intriguing preface and a conglomerate of great work. The book features several prominent firms while highlighting the designers that work there. It's a good source of information because it explains the communication problem, and then how the use of good design solved it. It does this across several different media, from the aesthetics of store architecture to the traditional printed brochure. Like the others from Rockport, certain projects are repeated in their other books, but overall, any individual with an eye for the intangible will appreciate this book.

The story of Yes, the most cosmic band in progressive rock, is told in limericks, covering the group's 30-plus year history
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2004-09-25
I love this book. It's brilliant! The limericks outline the entire history of the band. The bio is there as well to fill in any gaps. The limericks are just great. Anyone who loves this band as much as I do will really enjoy this book.
YesTales Is Intelligent And Fun.......2002-06-13
YesTales is both informative and enjoyable (a rare combination, indeed). It is not encumbered with ranting opinion. I found it to be punchy, poignant and colorful ... a lively account of three decades of Yes. And the Limericks are hilarious! I have been a Yes fan for many years, and love all eras of Yes music. A Yes fan of any era would really enjoy this book, and any real Yes fan will know that says a lot! Three decades is a lot of music, and very distinctive eras. I loved it!

A Yes fan of any era would really enjoy this book, and any real Yes fan will know that says a lot! Three decades is a lot of music, and very distintive eras. I loved it!
