I waited for this book to come out after enthusiastically reading the original "Rogue Warrior." I thought Red Cell was good...well you might say it was "OK." But it certainly didnt have the drama of the very first Rogue Warrior book.
As a sidenote which might interest other readers, I was told by one of the characters of the first Rogue Warrior that "Red Cell was more true than the original Rogue Warrior." I was told this by Jim Watson when I was visiting the UDT/SEAL museum in Fort Pierce, FL in 1994. He didnt go into any specific details and I didnt ask. After hearing Jim Watson make this comment to me in his office, I have since wondered how much (or how little) is really true in ANY of the Rogue Warrior series of books.
Honestly, my advice is after youve read the first Rogue Warrior book, youve basically read them all.

Marcinko knows his stuff. There's no doubt he's from the old school of stick it in your face and make you like it leadership.
Great action sequences and real enough to admit even the highest trained Spec warriors make mistakes or s%#t just sometimes happens.(i.e. Murphy's Law always rules)
The story moves along swiftly with just the right amounts of shooting, profanity, techno jargon, humor, and drinking to keep it interesting.
Yes, the violence level is high but, so is the fun. Bravo Zulu.

This book is fairly fun to read especially if you like spec ops and that sort of thing. But his ego just gets terribly annoying, as well as his attempts at humor - he tries too hard to make himself seem macho. WE GET THE POINT, YOURE A TOUGH NAVY SEAL! But besides that, its a pretty fun read.

If you have read all of Cmdr Marcinko's books, and I have, you know that some of the 'asides' he gives in these books are true. Red Cell did do a security exercise where they simulated 'blowing up' Air Force One. Marcinko did lead a team of shooters into Libya where they waxed over 30 people in a terrorist camp. Now the main story, which in Red Cell is about the smuggling of nuclear material to Japanese Rightists by traitors in the U.S., (as far as I know), that's fiction.
For those in the know, it's fun reading Marcinko's books and seeing where he's taken the real stuff and blended it in with the fiction. Of all his books, this is the one I still enjoy reading the most.

It has been a long time since I have read such a fun, and interesting romance novel!!!!! I felt like this broke the mold of your normal average historical romance. Fast paced, Interesting story, one of the few that didn't bore me with sub-story lines and forced mystery. The only mystery here? "are these two going to actually make it?" Most books of this catagory are very predictable, always leading up to a big climax that falls short of really surprising anyone. THIS BOOK IS NOT THAT WAY! I rushed out and got the second in the series ( SHOT GUN BRIDE) and I'm sad to say... it was SOOOOOOO boring I had to force myself to stay with it.. I am about to read the third and I AM HOPING that MILLER gets back on track! Sometimes I feel like her books are rushed and thrown together, not very well thought out... a result of pumping out too many novels! BUT PLEASE READ THIS ONE IT IS A WONDERFUL ESCAPE !!!!!!

After reading the Left Behind series, I couldn't understand how this third book in series, could possibly be the end of this series. Well, it is. And it's left me wishing for another series of books by J.Jenkins. I just can't put J. Jenkins books down, once I get my hands on them. I pray that J. Jenkins just keeps on writing. It is really hard finding Christian fiction that keeps you on the edge of your chair like his books do.

I found this book a wonderful treatment of the sacrament of reconciliation. It is very readable as are most of Scott Hahn's works. The scriptural references were helpful as I prepared a lesson plan for our adult faith formation group. The end of the book is useful for preparing oneself to celebrate this sacrament.

Delicious French cooking for the home. Chef Pepin relies on technique and not on extravagant ingredients. Each of the 26 sections in the book features a complete menu. All recipes are well explained and easy to follow, the final dishes are shown in photographs. I have tried several of the dishes and liked every single one. Some of the dishes are very simple with a nice twist, as in the Scallop and Potato Napoleons where simple baking potatoes are turned into an elegant dish, or in the Stuffed Butternut Squash where an otherwise sweet vegetable becomes piquant. Other dishes are more involved but not complicated at all. And all ingredients are readily available on farmers' markets and in grocery stores.

A must have book for anyone who enjoys complex flavours, which not only work together, but, are staisfying, and lighter in in fat. The PBS master of French cuisine has done it again! In this Offering Jacques and (his daughter) Claudine, put together meals which are not only satisfying, but, appealing to all the senses. This is done in a manner in which the novice can accomplish, without being condescending to the more experienced home gastronome.
Colourful photos, and artwork, as well as, straight forward directions, and descriptions (of both menus and ingredients), motivate the reader into the creation of a cullinary frenzy, wether it be for family, or home entertaining.
This is a "MUST HAVE", for anyone who enjoys good food, with a healthy twist!

This is the companion book to the PBS series of the same title, also the "sequel" to "Cooking w/ Claudine", the celebrated French chef Jacques Pepin's first cooking show w/ his daughter. Having seen both shows and read both books, I have to say this is a even better one. Recipes are written w/ clear instructions, each one marks w/ time to prepare, nutrition information, and possible alternative menus. I have made several dishes out of this book and they all taste wonderful. One of the best and easiest dessert I have ever had is in this book (warm chocolate tartlet w/ nuts). Jacques' signature is not only to make French cooking easy, he also modernizes his dishes such that they are healthy as well. A must buy for any gourmet home chef.

Great if you can follow a recipe!.......2003-10-01
I was given this book as a gift; never saw the show. The recipes are excellent but don't allow for much improvisation (in my experience!)--the low-fat adjustments he makes really need to be followed to the letter in order for the dishes to come out as well as they should. That said, if you are a recipe-follower, he does amazing things with short ingredient lists, easy cooking techniques, and interesting combinations of ingredients. I especially like the potato-crusted fish recipe and the "spicy ginger chicken" (which is not at all spicy, but very tasty). There's also a great cole slaw recipe that uses curry powder--sounds weird, but it's delicious!
My favorite cookbook..........2002-05-13
There are lots of simple, elegant and flavorful recipes in here from master chef Jacques Pepin. Remember, he is cooking with his ditzy daughter, Claudine, so things are never too complicated. This is great for folks who want to start down the gourmet path without too much fuss.
My personal favorite is the butternut squash puree. I make it about once a month.

Stained Glass Windows & Doors, 2nd book..........2006-03-15
The 1st book was incredible! I loved it..the windows were exciting and different...and I couldn't stop picking it up and looking at more windows and designs.....The second book, for me, doesn't have such incredible window designs...a bit more ordinary..however, what I do like is that it's laid out a bit more in order..and a lot more informative history on the stained glass...Prices are really irrelevant..as they'll be outdated in a few years...There's such a great need for books on stained glass...and these certainly are of help. A book on just American Stained Glass windows would be appropriate..and then one specializing on Victorian styles, A&C styles, and then regional styles...along with how they were used in the homes..and maybe a collection with period pictures...etc..there's lots more that needs to be printed!

I saw Jill Gordon's Peacock on a website that carried her charts in the UK. The chart alone was going to cost [money] including shipping. So, when a friend pointed out this book, I nearly flipped. The price was less than half the cost of a single chart, and the book is filled with a dozen other designs as well! When I received it, I discovered that it had much more content than your typical book of cross stitch charts. Jill has included commentary on her inspiration, art techniches and other interesting stories on each design, making them come alive in a way few "charts" do. For example she includes a story about peacocks in her native England sitting on top of the barn squawking at passers-by. And, did you know that the more eyes on a peacocks tail, the more alluring he is to females, but the more cumbersome his tail is, making him more vulnerable to preditors?
For many of the charts there is a picture of the original watercolor, suggestions on the best way to stitch it to achieve the desired look, and other ideas for finishing. Finally, she even has a section in the back for the finishing techniques she used in the pictures. Considering that this book costs what many single charts do today, this would definately rank as one of the best values I have added to my stash. You will not be disappointed!

When I read the inside back flap of the dust jacket and read that the author is a designer as well as a devotee of Tibetan Buddhism, and teaches yoga I senses I might like the book and I was not the least bit disappointed.
To many books on simplicity of design that I have checked out recently are void of true simplicity and or are to 'cute,' which suggested to me that the author thought he/she knew what simplicity of design was, but really did not.
There is nothing 'cute' about this book or its superb photographs. On page 27 the author notes 'Light and Dark. In addition to color, the balance and interplay of light and dark are instrumental in shaping our visual experience of our environment. To promote harmony and well being within our homes, it is essential to create a balance of light and shade in each interior that is appropriate to the room's function at different times of the day. Light has an energizing effect on the body, promoting activity and mental alterness; an abundance of light is therefore desirable in rooms that are used for active daytime pursuits.' Notice she realizes the power sunlight, natural light plays in our overall health. When we changed the colors in the cottage to brighter hues we noticed even occasional depression lifted. Because we felt both energized and destressed.
Now I readily admit that those people who prefer Levitz furniture style wont like this book, because this book and its photos are devoid of clutter that all to many American homes have an abundance of. Especially cookie cutter look alike suburban homes.
Also like as she shows on page 69, her example of how a blend of brick, tile wood and metal in clean lines can work well together. Or how on page 73 she notes that sensual stimulation is important especially at mealtime when one should strive to present food on colourful dishes. Makes me so happy I have a nice collection of Fiestaware in various colours with place settings for four in at least six colours since we entertain a lot.
Her examples of calming restful bathrooms is a feast for the eyes and one can see how using examples she shows can make soaking in a hot bath a spiritual and renewing experience. Clean crisp lines and no cluttered or overdone ceramic tile, shower curtains or matching rugs, toilet tank and toilet seat covers!
She even has a wonderful section on gardens and outdoor dining beginning on page 147 titled Gardens, Balconies and Decks. Where she shows examples of each that will fit in city, suburb or rural spaces.
A wonderful book for the person looking to plan well before they build or even buy a fixer upper. One of my favorite books on peaceful abodes and it lives up 100% to its title Peace At Home.

Unlike most design books, I felt a strong emotional attachment to the succinctly conveyed advice, demonstrated in inspirational, calming pictures. I actually find it calming to review after a long day as well. I recommend taking your time and thoughtfully trying to digest its messages, as oppose to glossing over the pretty pictures.

important scholarly contribution.......2007-10-09
The book offers a nice introduction to the artist's life and times. Also provides excellent insights regarding the workshop and distinguishing between Rembrandt's art and that of his pupils. The scholarship is indepth and apt, most of the writers being part of the Rembrandt Project. There are 83 separate plates (most in color) with wonderful essays and explanations.
If you can't see Rembrandt in person, this is the book.......2006-10-10
This box set is the most prized possession on my bookshelf. I could not possibly do the pictures and information in this book justice with words. Some of the most amazing detail photographs of Rembrandt's surfaces that I have ever seen.

This book illustrates and discusses 35 of the finest paintings by Dou, one of the most highly regarded Dutch painters of the 17th century. Dou learned glass painting from his father and in 1628 became Rembrandt's first pupil. After some early portraits, he painted chiefly small domestic scenes characterized by minute detail (often painted under a magnifying glass), skillful chiaroscuro, and lifelike effect. Dou's work was very popular and continued to be influential until the mid-19th century when appreciation for precision in painting declined under the influence of impressionism. This will be a beautifully produced catalogue that will introduce the works of Gerrit Dou to a wider audience.

Exquisite painter brought back into limelight.......2000-08-30
This exhibition catalogue contains enlightening and thoughtful essays on seventeenth-century Dutch painter, Gerrit Dou. Dou, one of Rembrandt's students, was highly esteemed during his lifetime for his exquisite technique in painting, but as Arthur Wheelock explains in one of the catalogue essays, his work began to lose favor in the middle of the nineteenth century. This catalogue is a wonderful account of Dou's rise and fall from fame, as well as a study of his masterful painting technique. In addition to the informative text, the color illustrations are beautifully rich, and they do justice to Dou's incredible paintings.
A beautiful collection from an overlooked genius........2000-05-16
Although Rembrandt and Vermeer are the two most discussed and honored of the Dutch Masters, and deservedly so, Gerrit (or Gerard) Dou had a far more dramatic influence on 17th century art in the Netherlands than either of his better known countrymen. It is Rembrandt's later work, with an individuality so far ahead of its time, and Vermeer's penetrating psychological touches that make them fascinating to us in light of modern movements in art. But the paintings of Dou, by the laborious nature of their creation if not always their actual subject matter, give a much deeper insight into the culture and times in which he lived, and the growing taste for luxury from the then newly-emerged Dutch middle class. His images were themselves like jewels, with beauty almost impossible to imagine coming from a human hand, and the artistic perfection that began with Van Eyck found a worthy successor. When such virtuosity became less appreciated in the late 19th century, however, Dou then suffered the fate that Vermeer had known all along, and his name was all but forgotten. It is to the world's benefit that recent showings at the National Gallery in Washington, as well as this flawless book, are begining to change that. As with all of the other volumes that Arthur Wheelock has compiled and edited, this book provides a thoroughly detailed examination of Dou's work, with the kind of objective insight that can re-emphasize his importance to all those just learning about this amazing painter.
Long-awaited show and catalogue of precious Dou paintings.......2000-05-14
This catalogue to the current Dou exhibition in Washington (NGA - 4/16-10/6,2000) is as splendid and intimate as the show itself - 35 small, exquisitely crafted paintings by the Leiden master who was Rembrandt's pupil while that master was himself still a teenager. Wheelock reviews the critical history around Dou's work - the minutely detailed paintings, with their startlingly accurate and refined light effects were highly valued and admired until Thore-Burger and the early modern critics heralded the taste for broad, expressive brushwork. They labelled his work as superficial and heartless, but more recent work has rediscovered sophisiticated and thoughtful themes in such works as the Quack (included) and the Braamcamp triptych (two closely related works are included). Baer's essay outlines the career, working method and subject matter of Dou, exploring some aspects of his extraordinary "reality effect" as well, while Boersema explores his extraordinary, painstaking technique, reviewing such technical evidence as paint samples and reflectograms from the Lady at her Toilet and the Young Mother, both part of the show. There's not a lot of new work on Dou, so this catalogue is especially welcome to those of us who love Dutch Art of the Golden Age. This NGA cabinet gallery show moves to the London National Gallery for Sept and Nov, and the Hague's Mauritshuis from Dec to next Feb. This catalogue's gorgeous reproductions and substantial bibliography make it a solid, up-to-date reference on Dou too.

2 stars, and that's for the fantastic photos.......2003-01-19
There are plenty of fantastic photos of the Jam in this book, glossy, one to a page and feature the band and individual photos of Bruce, Rick & Paul. The writing is appalling and a wasted opportunity for Bruce (foremostly) and Rick (who keeps mum most of the time) to provide a candid, frank and interesting portrayal of the band and of Paul Weller. Much of the tone is snidely, the authors sort of creep around the subject of Paul Weller in the hope of not directly offending him, but instead serve him up with loads of indirect put-downs and patronising gibberish which in fact, has the effect of making Bruce come across as the [not so bright member] of the band - with all his fretting and tantrums - rather than Paul who comes across, (if you read between the lines) as a hard-working guy who loved his music and seemed to spend much of his waking hours writing songs (and drinking!) Sure, Paul had has faults, who doesn't, but the tone of the book only elucidates Bruce's shortcomings, not Paul's. The toilet paper anecdotes are truly beyond the pale.
The worst aspect of this book comes towards the end when, horror of horrors, Paul decides to leave the band. Bruce's subsequent reaction sort of goes to show he probably doesn't possess a great deal upstairs, and it illustrates how far out of touch the band were with each other at that point. They didn't seem to communicate much in 1982, maybe Bruce & Rick were scared of Paul? So Bruce was lost in an island of despair and fretfulness over the closing of band. He does his best to serve up the hackest reviews of the Style Council and tell his readers it wasn't the sort of stuff he was interested in, forgetting that a couple of pages earlier he'd said they (Bruce & Rick) surely could have turned their hand to anything Paul wanted to do. Go figure.
This review isn't an anti-Bruce jibe. Bruce I think (going via the sleeve notes of the Jam at the BBC CD release) has realised that things, ie, the Jam ending when they did, was in hindsight the best thing for all of them, and the band. This book could, and should have been a lot better. It's most disappointing that it lacks any real depth, analysis or candidness about Paul and the band and their songs because this would have been the opportunity to provide that. But the book reveals nothing of note about Paul and his artistry and musicality, and all it says about Bruce is that he merely regarded it as a career - no true love of music revealed there, nor does Bruce reveal in himself any true depth of character. A shame, they were a Classic band.
Some of the ... boys-in-the-motel anecdotes are amusing but that's where the book tends to level off. As said, it says more about Bruce and his shortcomings than it does about Paul. Big shame that. Anyway, the photos are great.

The Jam has turned out to be a major influence on me. Rather than hear about the wunderkund who still sells-out halls and makes great music at his leisure, I felt more curious about the rest of the band, who were basically discarded.
The book has great anecdotes about the early days, touring, working hard, and coping with the sudden end of the band. There is no bitterness, which was good. There are also great photos (with not so great captions), and some stuff about Paul that I don't believe even Paolo Hewitt knows. I highly recommend this read for any fan of the Jam, and anyone who thinks they know what it's like to be in a successful band...Think again! If they would've made it here in the US, we would all be listening to much better music now...trust me.
Interesting to get the "other" side of the story.......2000-01-14
"The Jam - A Beat Concerto" is the authorized bio of the band and a great book in its own right. However, author Paolo Hewitt was (and is) a close confidante of Paul Weller and one always wondered if Messrs Buckler and Foxton were being given completely fair and/or truthful treatment, especially the parts concerning Foxton's actions during the final days.
The other 2/3 of the Jam have resolved this problem by issuing this memoir, a mostly terse and factual book. As Weller wrote most tunes and was the political lightining rod, Buckler/Foxton stick to tales of tours, practical jokes, etc. They do address the power struggle that evolved with John Weller, their manager (and Paul's father).
