Vladimir Girshkin, a likeable Russian immigrant, searches for love, a decent job, and a credible self-identity in Gary Shteyngart's debut novel, The Russian Debutante's Handbook. With a doctor-father of questionable ethics and a manic, banker mother, Vladimir avoids his suburban parents and their desire that he pursue the almighty dollar as proof of success. Vladimir gets by as an immigration clerk, eking out a living in a cruddy New York City apartment while accumulating an array of quirky acquaintances, from a wealthy but disheveled old man (who claims his electric fan speaks to him) desperate for citizenship to Challa, a portly S/M queen. As a love interest, Challa is replaced by Francesca, a graduate student whose friends welcome Vladimir for the status he brings their bohemian clique, and whose parents encourage them to shack up (she lives at home) as visible proof she can maintain a steady relationship.
The Russian Debutante's Handbook is a quirky amalgam of dead-on American absurdities, albeit with somewhat stereotypical characters. While Vladimir flounders with how to improve his state, he becomes an expatriate in a trendy European city, becomes somewhat of a mobster himself, and generally has a good time. While many of the central characters remain elusively thin, Vladimir is a delight, and Shteyngart's wit is merciless: Russian women wear "wedding cakes of blond hair" and graduate students lounge in a bar "as if waiting for funding to appear." Reminiscent of Gogol and other Russian satirists, The Russian Debutante's Handbook is a genuine, sublime social commentary. --Michael Ferch

Congratulations to Gary Shteyngart on writing a worthy Russian-American novel, and a great satire, to boot. This is one of the most readable debuts I've ever had the pleasure of reading. While light, RDH is successfully humorous, entertaining, enjoyable, and mostly unpretentious.
We follow the adventures of 25-year-old Vladimir, whose quarter-life crisis, combined with deep-seated immigrant insecurity despite being mostly assimilated, send him on a search for self of the most modern proportions. Passively getting roped into a relationship with the spoiled and pseudo-intellectual Francesca, the daughter of clueless New York professors, as the token commie, Vladimir is soon caught up in the world of international crime. His constant running brings him to Stolovaya (Cafeteria, in Russian), a ready-to-be-pillaged-and-plundered post-communist state in Eastern Europe, where he balances his consulting spot to a crime syndicate with his role as the king of Western expatriates.
To his credit, Shteyngart in many ways succeeds where Franzen and many other writers have failed: creating a book in the spirit (if not the genius) of Catch 22. GS captures the ridiculous whims and self-delusion of the aimless post-collegiate crowd through the eyes of an aimless but paradoxically ambitious Russian immigrant. He orders his life with efficient lies and unapologetically, gradually buys into them.
If the book suffers from anything, it's characterization. GS often sacrifices credulity for effect (see Rybakov the insane citizenship-seeking Russian, etc.). But good laughs can redeem most anything, and they do here.
Pretty random, yet funny.......2006-12-28
This book definitly started out funny. It was rediculous and absurd. I must say that as a Russian imigrant, we are probably just as crazy as the book says we are, if not more. It gets especially exciting towards the middle of the book, when you can't help but to root for the main character. The last two thirds of the book become completely drawn out, as the author settles into a comfortable place. Then he somehow wraps it up in 20-30 pages and you're left wondering, "where did that come from." It's not that the ending is too unexpected, it just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the novel.
Overall, I thought it was a great, easy-to-get through book. If you're thinking, "oh another tale of the hardships of coming to America," this book is not just about that. It's not really an "immigrant's plight" book, which is good thing. It has an actual plot, albeit a completely random and absurd plot.

This is a nice light read if you have nothing better to do.The tone is sufficientlt sarcastic to attract people who have no idea of what is going on , and the milieu is exotic enough. As to the quality of the story the less said the better. Terrific for a slow reader on a longish air trip. Also guaranteed not to offend too much, even those who normaly would feel offended. You may call it humor if you like.
Criminal Brutality - - is Cute.......2006-11-04
Jewish vaudiville farce makes light of "naughty" post-Soviet pillaging of Eastern Europe by amoral Jews supported by ex-KGB hoodlums, finding no serious fault with all things antisocial in Western society. Contains a minor theme of natural abuse of naive women, and maximum references to the giants of Slavic literature, such as Tolstoy, Lermontov, and Milan Kundera, apparently hoping their stature will enhance the image of this wannabe clown. Despite the reprehensible content, the quality of the writing is quite good, and a few of the contrived "funny" events pasted together in this novel actually ARE funny. Still, on the whole, there are tons of better ways to waste one's time than reading such nonsense.

Is The Diamond Age a glimpse of a powerful, unique future? Is it a treatise on the limits of technology? Stephenson emerges as the force I hoped he would become, in this strong follow-up to Snow Crash. The story follows Nell, an impoverished thete, and her brother as they struggle to deal with a hierarchical, paternalistic society ruled by "Vickys," new Victorians, the controllers of the Feed: the nanotech hardline that all future technology is based on. Stephenson succeeds because his effort is comprehensible: "Dirty air and dirty water came in and pooled in tanks. Next to each tank was another tank containing slightly cleaner air or cleaner water...all the action took place in the walls separating the tanks, which were not really walls but nearly infinite grids of submicroscopic wheels, ever-rotating and many-spoked. Each spoke grabbed a nitrogen or water molecule on the dirty side and released it after spinning around to the clean side...in the end, all of them were funneled into a bundle of molecular conveyor belts known as the Feed". Stephenson expertly introduces us to his future-tech through the eyes of Nell, our female protagonist. Her brother Harv explains how an MC (matter compiler) works and mugs a nanotech engineer who is carrying a copy of the Young Lady's Illustrated Primer intended for his daughter. Harv recovers it for Nell and then the story really takes off, as we see Nell blossom into a respectable young Vicky, attending a girl's finishing school and completing adventures in the lands of the Primer. The vastness of the book makes the world more credible, as we hear of the foundations of phyles (tribes) of the new society, the extent of the new technologies and the problems in China, a real specter many of us must face in our lifetimes. The combination of scifi, mythology and history makes this an appealing romp through a future still consistent with our present.

Firstly, it is not really possible for him to top Snow Crash, so I couldn't expect that. I did only find the Diamond Age to be average.
A corporate underling takes a supercomputer in the form of a book to educate his daughter to see beyond the strictures of the society that she has been raised iin. He is a nanoengineer, so some exploration of building by nanomachines is present.
My favourite Sci-Fi book.......2007-07-26
Often, when I read a book with many threads involving different characters it's rare in the extreme to enjoy each thread equally. This is that rare book. It's science fiction bordering on fantasy but with just enough grounding in possibility. It's also a wonderful treatise on parenting. As a parent myself, I found the primer to be a well laid out discussion on the role and possibilities of parenting. Excellently written and a genuine page turner, I finished this book in less than a week.

Simply put, this is a great book. The storyline is excellent, and the characters are incredible. If you like cyberpunk, science fiction or fantasy, you will find something in this book to keep you interested, guaranteed.

First goes first, I enjoyed this book quite much. It has a very well developed story which is fast-paced and intriguing. It is something that goes beyond usual stories in science fiction, originality is something which I think should be quite valued these days. There are quite a few characters whose personalities have also been very well lain through their actions, thoughts, physical descriptions...
Maybe the science in this science fiction book is not that great but just don't expect nothing too realistic, let's just use our imagination to see how the future could be.

As with several study guides that follow a successful book, it seems more like a way to make more $$ than really be a good guide. It might work as a personal study guide, but for a group it's not good. If you're going to do it personally, just study the book and take notes. Why do you need a guide?

Our daughter-in-law received this book as a Christmas gift and prepared one of the recipes for us when we visited. The chicken breasts with lemon and cranberry sauce were very elegant looking and absolutely delicious, and she said the dish was so easy to prepare. We're definitely ordering this cookbook and can't wait to try all the great recipes.

Lou has done a magnificent job with this new book. A great and most valuable edition to vintage bobbing head collector's library. A great compliment to Tim Hunter's book with newly uncovered information not yet before available to collectors.
If you are looking for new bobble heads, this is not for you. If you are looking for vintage nodders from the 1960's this is a must have book.

Very, very disappointed. Book is basically for Baseball, Football, Hockey bobbing heads. Most are much, much older bobbleheads, like many years ago. Not any bobbers from present day Nov. 8, 2005 to last ten years, if not fifteen years ago.
Very disappointed. Don't buy if you're looking for any bobbers produced in the last 10 years. Only ones listed are: Michelin Man no price,Orange County Choppers Mikey & Paul Jr. no price, Bill Clinton, no price, Surf's Up Surfer no price, Three Stooges newer issue Curly, Larry & Moe no price and the last one is Uncle Sam newer issue, no price. Sorry, but that's it. Bad choice on my part to purchase.

I was given this book as a gift...inspiration in my quest to add African design to my new home. Initially, I presumed it was a book of templates I could use in my home. Not at all! This author teaches you how to design and consistently encourages you to "interpret Africa in your own way". She expounds on the differing design styles in north, south, east and west Africa and the influences that explain the wide variety of styles. Should this author publish another home design book, I will purchase it. Guests in my home are in awe of the beautiful African designs!!!

I purchased African Style hoping it would help me decorate my Master Bathroom in an African theme. Although there is not a decorated bathroom in this book, that didn't matter. I was able to adapt all of the elements I admired into this room. Therefore , I find the book to be highly adaptable for any room in anyone's home.

Hats off to Sharne Algotsson. I love This second book. The color palettes are breathtaking, the design ideas are easily digestble anf the text was clear and to the point. What a great book.

Sharne Algotsson has managed the feat of writing a book that is both a coffee table book, thanks to the beautiful color palettes and G. Ross' magnificent photography, as well a a useful how-to book. This book will be attractive to anyone who would like to beautify their interior, even if they are not specifically searching for "Africanness": the color combinations are so elegant and warm, any home will benefit!

Yes, but what D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S b&w photos for the price! This is one of the BEST used book values I ever bought!
My favorites are the photos with captions "Beautiful Jennifer in serious thought" and "Jennifer strikes a playful pose."
These are like a work of art, and the rest of the excellent book is just icing on the cake!

This book was very informative. It was like the author followed Love around her whole life. It had many quotes from Love on many different topics. The pictures were great (though they would have been better in color). This book tells just how much she had to go through to get to the level she's at today, the top. I would have given it one more star if it were an official biography.

This is probably the best book Ive read so far. But it olny has 8 black&white photos, but great photos. Its small enough to fit in your jacket pocket. It has all the information I needed to know. And easy to read.
If you are looking for pictures, don't go for this........1999-07-01
I bought this book hoping it would have good info in a nice format, and some color pictures. There are 8 black and white pictures and it is written like a novel with chapters and everything. If you want color pictures and an easy-to-read book, don't go for this one.

I think Love deserves a better book, but this is the best out there right now and everyone who even sort of likes Love should get it. The best part is the description of Love's amazing early life. My favorite was when she first arrived in Hollywood upon turning 10 and tried out for Kid's Incorporated--1100 talented girls trying for one part! Everyone warned her that she wouldn't make it right away, don't get discouraged, it's OK to fail, etc....and she won the part!! This book, combined with the E! Celebrity Profile that aired a few weeks back, tells you everything about how this amazing person became a star.

Marc Shapiro did a great job with this book. What makes it even better is that it's about Jennifer Love Hewitt, my heroine and idol. I found out more about Love than I ever hoped to know... I've been a fan of hers since Kids Inc. so I naturally assumed I knew all about Love that she was willing to tell. Love is great and loving love is even greater.

This is a wonderful biography of Love Hewitt.I'm have been a Jennifer Love Hewitt fan for quit some time and still discovered thing's I did'nt know of her Marc Shapio did a wonderful job.I found it had much more information than the other book of JLH (done by scene)5 stars all the way!!!!!
