Carol Goodman's admirable second novel, The Seduction of Water, has much in common with her bestselling debut, The Lake of Dead Languages. Both feature heroines who are at crossroads in their lives and who choose to move backward and inward. In the first novel, the main character returns to teach at the woodsy private school where she had been a scholarship student, triggering the horrible repetition of the violence that had marred her senior year. In The Seduction of Water, the heroine returns to the woodsy hotel in the Catskills where her parents had worked, in the hope of uncovering her dead mother's secrets. Somehow, the book doesn't feel like a reiteration of the earlier novel, perhaps because the tone throughout is lighter and more sure.
Iris Greenfeder is a 36-year-old barely published New York writer and teacher whose long-term boyfriend, an artist, sees her schedule as strict and therefore will not spend the night, because he likes to get up and paint first thing every morning. When one of Iris's stories about her mother is picked up by a small literary journal with a well-connected editor, things start to happen for her. She becomes convinced that a summer out of the city, working as manager of the old hotel, will give her the perfect setting in which to pen a memoir of her writer mother, as well as an opportunity to look for the rumored manuscript of her mother's final book. But there are those who are just as determined to keep the dead woman's secrets in the grave. Only mildly suspenseful, and relying too much on coincidence, The Seduction of Water isn't the page-turner that Goodman's debut was, but patient readers may find it a richer and more satisfying novel overall. --Regina Marler

On the heels of her mesmerizing bestseller, The Lake of Dead Languages, Carol Goodman has written a brooding, captivating novel that skillfully weaves fairy tale themes into a modern web of intrigue. It is a novel about the secrets mothers keep, and the daughters who must live in their shadows.
Iris Greenfeder, ABD (All But Dissertation) has just turned forty, lives in Manhattan, and works three teaching jobs to support herself. Recently she's felt that the "buts" are taking over her life: all but published, all but a professor, all but married (to Jack, her boyfriend of ten years). Yet the sudden impulse to write a story about her mother leads to a shot at literary success. The piece recounts an eerie Irish fairy tale her mother used to tell her at bedtime -- and nestled inside is the sad story of her mother's death....
More than fifty years ago, Iris's mother, Katherine Morrissey, arrived at the Catskills' grand Hotel Equinox penniless, with almost no belongings. Kay was hired as a maid but refused to speak of her past or her family. One year later, she married Ben Greenfeder, the hotel's manager. During the hotel's off-season, Kay wrote the first two fantasy novels of a planned trilogy. There never was a third book. When Iris was nine, her mother left one day for a writer's conference -- and never came back. Kay died that very night in a hotel fire on Coney Island, registered as another man's wife.
Now Hedda Wolfe, Kay's former literary agent, has a proposal: If Iris will return to the Hotel Equinox where she grew up, research her mother's life, and find the third and final manuscript that Hedda is convinced exists, then she can guarantee Iris a huge advance to write her mother's biography.
Transfixed by the notion of a third book, Iris believes that it will hold clues to the mysteries of Kay's life -- and death. But as she begins to peer into the thicket of her mother's hidden world, stinging revelations leave Iris with new questions. When a deadly "accident" befalls the one man who could shed some light on Kay, it becomes clear that Iris is not alone in her deep interest in her mother's past -- or in her search for a lost manuscript that might hold more secrets than she ever expected.

not as good as lake of dead languages.......2007-03-29
I absolutely loved "The lake of dead languages" and I devoured this book eagerly but it just wasnt as well crafted or as believable. The author seems to strain to tie the plot together.
Not my Favorite of Goodman's Novels.......2007-01-06
I am fan of Carol Goodman's writing style and use of mythology and folklore in her novels yet Seduction of Water wasn't my favorite of her novels. There was something about the story that kept me very detached from the characters.
Iris's struggle to find herself while finding her mother's final novel was intertwined with the Irish folklore of the Selkie, but there were so many parts of this story that were not as memorable as they could have been.
If you are a fan of any of Goodman's other novels I would recommend reading this story, otherwise read her other stronger novels to get a better feel for what Goodman has to offer.
Enjoyable but flat..........2006-07-27
"The Seduction of Water" is a easy read, set at a quick pace and full of dialogue to keep the pages turning. The opening section bears a strong resemblance to Susanna Moore's "In the Cut": a single female teacher, living in New York, finds herself compelled by a potentially dangerous student, and soon finds herself solving a mystery of which he may be a key player. After that similar intro, the books diverge. Goodman's heroine, Iris, returns to a summer resort in the Catskills where she grew up. She soon finds herself caught up in events that lead her to solve a 30 year old mystery involving the death of her mother.
Although the book is marketed as literary, it really is little more than a beach read. Many of the characters (even crucial ones) are flat and many of the twists are obvious. It is better written than "The Da Vinci Code" but has about the same amount of depth. I enjoyed it but don't care to read the author again.
richness.......2006-06-24
I love how Carol Goodman really takes me to a place. I see the buildings, the gardens, the rooms so well. I feel the mood. Very rich.
Lovely.......2006-03-28
This book is so beautifully written. One of those where you wish you could call the author and thank her yourself. I found myself wanting to read faster to see what was going to happen and slower to make it last. I now own 2 more of Goodman's books simply from how well written this one is. The story is lovely, interesting and very visual. It is rather gothic and shadowy - full of beautiful images. Well worth your time - well worth the price.

Before reviewing a book - READ, don't skim!.......2006-06-27
I almost didn't give this book a chance because of the poor reviews. Luckily I stumbled across it in a local used bookstore and decided for $2 it was definitely worth a read. I'm very glad I did. Something I like to do after finishing a book is scan the reviews to see if I'm in agreement. For this book, I found that most of the reviews were sadly exaggerated.
One of my biggest problems with people who read a romance set somewhere in the 19th century, is that many tend to judge it by 21st century standards. These people are generally not good critics for this time period and should stick with contemporary romances and stay away from the historicals.
While this wasn't one of my all-time favorite romance novels, I was disappointed with the lack of support it seemed to receive. It's entertaining - plain and simple. And why do we read romance novels if not to be entertained? Some of the points that I felt should be corrected are the fairly strong ones that would influence someone else buying or reading this book. Here are some of the things that have been criticized, but deserve an argument for the positive aspect of the novel and not just a one-sided approach to what happened:
1) Matthew calls her the daughter of a whore once (that I recall) throughout the course of the book. He mentions it to his father, not knowing that Jessie can hear him since she supposedly went to bed. This is a fact and while Matt does think of it and worry about it from time to time, Jessie is more stressed out about it than any of the other characters in the book.
2) While Jessica has fallen in love with Matthew at the beginning of the book, Matthew definitely doesn't have the same feelings for her - giving the book an edge that it needs (and not falling into a sappy pattern of having them both fall in love quickly).
3) They do not have an arranged marriage. There is not even a hint of it. His father would like the two of them to marry and says as much in the beginning of the book, but Matthew refuses and the story builds from there.
4) One reviewer claims that he "says this about her through out the whole book, which is very unflattering-good to swive but not to wive" - I never once read this phrase. While he does think that he would like her for a mistress, he doesn't ask her because he knows she's innocent and he wouldn't put her in that situation.
5) There is a segment of one chapter where he has sex with another woman (maybe about 2-3 pages for the entire scene, including them discussing that this will be their last night together). While I'm not a fan of reading about the hero and another woman, Jessie is openly looking for a husband during the London Season (with the support of Matthew's father). Matt has not made her any promises and has actually acted as a chaperone (to an extent) while she attends these functions. Reading about him and another woman was not my favorite thing about the book, but considering the time and the fact that the two main characters were not (and had not been) together, I didn't find it horrible. It's repeatedly stated in romance novels that men are going to find gratification where they can (at least before marriage) and I wasn't surprised that a scene like this happened to show up in a romance novel.
6) While Gwen and St. Cere are interesting (enough that I think they actually deserved their own book for their story), I don't think they took over the book at the end. They have a mild flirtation and share a brief, chaste kiss before going their separate ways. By the time they meet up again, Adam is becoming a changed man (for Gwen) - I would've liked to have seen more character development for him (in their own book) but it was a fun side story.
7) There was a spanking scene in the beginning when a younger Matthew and a 12 year old Jessie get into an argument (ending with the child getting a spanking for throwing rotten apples at his new naval uniform). There was also a teasing throwback to that later in the novel (after a grown up Jessica pours water on Matt's boots - on purpose) in which spanking is lightly thrown in as playful foreplay. I considered it a fun scene, showing that these two were having fun chasing each other. There is also a segment of the story that focuses on Gwen and her abusive stepfather. All three in hindsight show the difference between discipline/adult play/abuse and do a good job of deciphering what's considered right and wrong.
8) There is only one wedding in the entire book. And it is highly entertaining. While three marriages do take place, we only read about one actual wedding and the other three are mentioned after the fact.
9) Matthew NEVER rapes his wife. There is a chapter when he thinks she's being unfaithful and goes to confront her. She is initially a little nervous when she sees that something is bothering him, when he kisses her, she offers no resistance and is obviously turned on by it. The scene is passionate and hot and Matthew does vent his frustration, but it doesn't border on rape. He's careful not to hurt her, she's VERY into it (to the point that she worries that she's following in her mother's footsteps in the enjoyment of passionate sex). He definitely doesn't rape her - especially not twice (there isn't even another detailed love scene after that one).
10) For the most part, Matthew was a model husband. Never considers straying from his wife, never desires another woman, never abusive. Even going so far to make his wife happy that he takes in her niece and treats her like his own daughter.
11) While Matthew does leave England when the scandal comes out, he does so in search of his wife and 'daughter'. They know they have to stay gone for a long time while his father is more than happy to smooth things over (considering he always knew that this secret could come to the forefront).
12) While her brother is forced to join the navy with the hope that he doesn't survive, I thought he got off way too easily. Her brother is a man who continuously beat her as they grew up (giving her black eyes and beating her across her back), allowed his friend to rape her for a few coins (the 'friend' doesn't succeed, but it shows how he regards his sister), blackmails Jessie for money at every turn and he beats his daughter (a toddler) until she becomes mute. I was hoping for his brutal death at the hands of Matthew. I repeat - he got off way too easy.
I've never read any of Kat Martin's books before this one, but I think she is a talented author and this book is well worth the money. I'll be looking for her books in the future. This particular book, I would actually give four and a half stars for the simple fact that it ran a little long and could've been trimmed up (but like I said, if Gwen and Adam had their own story, it would have shortened this one).
It was a fun read and I'm sure I'll want to reread it in the future.
Better than most of the reviews!.......2005-08-20
This is the modern world where women are no longer called whores but give themselves freely and no one dares to care. However, the setting of this book is regency and IS treated fairly by Kat Martin. Unfortunately, Jesse is the daughter of a whore. Unfortunately in regency time, people were considered to be like their parents unless proven otherwise-which did happen. I have read many regency books and the attitudes of male and female of the ton are consistant among the authors. Many of the ton did not marry for love or lust. They married to keep the lineage rich, landed, and/or titled. They were the "elite" and did whatever they wanted if they thought they could get away with it-much like royalty today (in fact the many of the ton were in queue for the throne). This book very well shows how people can change. I thought the father was wonderful. His protecting Jesse and wanting his son to be happy showed a lot of depth. His son's attitude was part the product of misconception about his father and stepmother, and part the product of the society as a whole. Kat Martin deserves credit for writing about regency. She shows the attitudes of the day, but she also show that some of the ton had depth to them. The characters are well-rounded and the book has a happy ending. The journey to this ending is well worth the read. In fact, it is one of my rereads.
Not my cup of tea.......2003-12-18
My biggest problem with this book was that I didn't like the two main characters, Jessica and Matthew. Matt was pretty much an arrogant jerk throughout the book and Jessica's integity was lacking. I still don't understand why Jessica liked Matt anyway.I also tend to hate any book that has the "hero" having sex with other women, especially after he has met the "heroine". And I do not care to read about anyone else having sex besides the two main characters. In this book there are many such sex scenes written in great detail (yuck). The only redeeming part of this book was the romance between Adam and Gwen. I really wish the whole book had been about them!
author totally wrecks her own book!.......2003-10-03
This book was so depressing it was terrible, not sexy at all. 1-Matthew is a self-righteous prig who calls her the daughter of a whore thoughout, to her face as well as behind her back
2-Jessica is so determined to become a lady that all the spark we see in her at the start of the novel dies
3-Jessica is already in love with him at outset of book so there is no development and joy of falling in love
4-He spends so much time avoiding her there is no chance for him to get to know her as other than a woman he wants in his bed but not to be married to; it is an arranged marriage.
5-He says this about her through out the whole book, which is very unflattering-good to swive but not to wive.
6-He has sex with his former mistress in flagrant and tasteless detail; it does not make any difference he keeps hoping it is Jessica as he does all sorts of depraved things to the woman all night.
7-Secondary couple St Cere and Gwen are FAR more exciting and take over the latter part of the book completely.
8-St Cere having sex with a mistress who reminds him of Gwen is also very off putting, why repeat what is already so gross.
9-the obsession with spanking ahd physical brutality to women throughout the book is gruesome
10-yet another wedding when Matthew's old decrepit father gets married
11-Matthew's new rape of his wife when he thinks she is being unfaithful-does this not once but twice.
12-Matthew always wanting his supposedly pure fiancee and finding Jessie lacking-he is continuously mentally unfaithful to her throughout the book
13-Said fiancee exposing all of her secrets-instead of Matthew proving he loves her no matter what, he HIDES in America for 2 years while his father whitewashes the scandal and bribes everyone or blackmails them into saying she was mistaken!!
14-His revolting behavior when they get married. she is no better. He gives her little choice, just physically overwhelms her, and then she lies to him to keep him.
15-His violence when he nearly kills her brother and then allows him to be press ganged into the navy in the hope that he will be killed so his wife and niece never have to wrry about the scandalous truth of her brith being brought to light-when of course it is anyway.
The only saving grace of this book is Gwen and St Cere. They alone get two stars. Jessie and Matthew can simply bore each other to death, and they would deserve each other for both being such ninnies. As for the author, this book is completely cliche ridden and so dull you can tell even she was bored with it at the end, since her heroine and hero go nowhere but down.

I love Kat Martin, and have been reviewing all the books of hers that I read today. this is definitely one of my faves. She is just awesome. There is passion and romance, and you can just feel it coming off the pages as soon as you crack open the book. Grab this one when you can, and you won't put it down.

In this eye-opening book, the author challenges Christians to embrace God's divine order and seeks to strengthen God-breathed intercession and prophetic ministry that bears the marks of humility, wisdom, and discernment. Unmasking th Jezebel Spirit.......2007-10-10
If you ever really wanted to know the true battle that is happening in the spirit realm this is the book foy you. This book allows you to first look at yourself and identify what God is and has delivered you from and then identify what is going up against you and explosed in the church body as a whole. Very rich, full of knowledge and wisdom, that must not be wasted, but used in this fight of faith. God wins and we have the victory in Christ Jesus. Amen Amen Amen
The Author was right!.......2007-09-04
This truly is a must read for all Pastors; I will add to that - all leaders who have a heart for protecting and serving the "King" of the house; and all Pastors wives - we usually are the over looked target of the jezebel spirit!
About Unmasking the Jezebel Spirit.......2007-08-25
Great insight helps the reader to understand where certain problems derive from in the body of Christ. It explains so much. I am far more educated now than I was before reading this very necessary book.
I lived it-- a must read!.......2007-03-20
In 2002, I unwittingly declared war on a Jezebel spirit. That spirit spent the next 9 months attempting to dismantle our ministry-- and in some ways, succeeded. A friend warned us that a congregant had a "Jezebel spirit," but I mistakenly believed that referred to a type of sexual whorishness. Boy, was I wrong.
In 2003, I purchased Unmasking the Jezebel Spirit to read during surgery recovery. WOW. It seemed as if JPJ had somehow viewed my life for a year or two, then went and wrote the book-- the incidents he wrote of were THAT typical!!!
In fact, when my pastor confronted this Jezebel spirit, he inadvertently did exactly what JPJ says NOT to do-- and got exactly the results JPJ says will happen if you don't deal with this spirit correctly.
I highly recommend the book.
It helped me learn to separate the PERSON from the SPIRIT that is operating, allowing me to move into forgiveness.

Humility, holiness & purity of heart is needed to overcome..........2006-06-11
A good overview of the Jezebel spirit to assist pastors, prophets, intercessors and all lay people in identifying and dealing with this ubiquitous and insidious problem of Church life. The Jezebel spirit rebels, controls and manipulates, often veiling hidden ambition under a religious garb, and operates in a variety of methods from intimidation to sexual manipulation to blatant witchcraft. Many people might identify this spirit also exerting its malignant influence outside church in diverse arenas of life such as in workplaces and politics at every level. John Paul Jackson gives examples where pastors or churches have been destroyed by the effect of a single person operating in this spirit. "No Church is too great, too pure or too healthy to be exempted from a Jezebel spirit", and hence this book is a warning and an exhortation to all - to walk in deep interior humility and to continuously examine and purify one's own intentions - while remaining on guard and recognizing attacks from without. It's also a useful manual on how to deal with the problem and those affected by this spirit.
Minus half a star for leaving me a little dissatisfied. Perhaps it's because Jezebel is only half the story - the other half is Absalom and Ahab. The masculine form of the Jezebel Spirit, an Absalom spirit, is skimmed over in two paragraphs, whereas the remainder of the book focusses on Jezebel operating through women. Also the bottom line is that it takes an Ahab - unrighteous and compromising authority - to tolerate/accommodate a Jezebel. An alliance in the heart - lust, ambition, idolatory - gives rise to an alliance in the flesh. The book apportions one chapter to describing an Ahab spirit, compared with seven chapters describing how Jezebel operates, and the examples drawn are almost all involving women. Is John Paul Jackson just trying to narrow his focus, or is this an oversight ? - considering that whereas Jezebel threatened to kill the prophets, Absalom, out of the King's very own household, threatened to tear apart the Kingdom of Israel. And it was Ahab who, through his alliance with Jezebel, was the one who gave her an operating platform in the first place. Beware Pastors! If you think you have to watch out only for women, you may have your antivirus on, but your firewall is switched off!
Minus another half star for not making resoundingly clear the fundamental preventative to Jezebels, Absaloms & Ahabs: Christlikeness, humility, holiness, purity of heart. For sure, spiritual authority in the form of Jehu is needed to slay Jezebel when she has already manifested, but prevention is better than cure. This is where I think the book is a little fuzzy. On the one hand John Paul Jackson warns against ambition, gain and lust. The mixed message seems to occur when on the other hand he implies that the primary motivation to defeat Jezebel was the Lord's promise of increased spiritual authority and Divine favour. In other words - spritual self advancement: the very temptation that is capable of incubating a Jezebel. When desire for external ministry becomes more highly prized than desire for the Holy Spirit's transforming us into the image and likeness of Christ, the resultant spiritual distortion sends out an invitation to dormant Jezebels to come to life. No folks, the motivation should be nothing other than the Lord's glory, even if the confrontation entails, like John the Baptist, losing one's own head.
Finally, to those potentially influenced by the negative reviews that the message of this book is too one-sided or might lead to witch hunts: this is not what the book is about. Rejecting the truth of the message because of the book's deficits does not negate the reality of the evil that Jezebel is, nor the unfettered power that this spirit wields in modern secular society and to a lesser extent in some churches. Jezebel originates from the pit of hell and simply must not be tolerated.
The responsibility to overcome Jezebel does not lie just in leardership's ( Jehu's) hands: ALL are called to overcome.
Product Description
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse." Malachi 4:5-6 I declare to you with the greatest of conviction that we are living in the days when this scripture is being fulfilled. The Elijah spirit is truly in the earth as the Lord prepares His Church for the return of Jesus and the culmination of all things. However as it was in the days of Elijah of old so it is in these days. Elijah in his day had to confront and deal with a false spiritual order and government that was established and set up by an evil woman called Jezebel and her spineless husband called Ahab. I declare to you that this spirit is still active in the earth and in the Church and is being confronted by the Elijah spirit. "And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, 'These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: "I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds. I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works. Revelation 2:18-23

A wonderful book, with a wealth of information about Lucie Rie, her life, her work. I have been looking for this book for several month, it is out of print, but.... translated into German, it is sold like a catalogue at the current Lucie Rie exhibit at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, Austria. Many photos, partially in color, a lot to read and a lot to look at. I am delighted.

Customer Reviews:
home decorating.......2006-11-10
I haven't had a chance to really put this book to use yet. Most of the styles are very modern and my taste is a little more traditional and "old world". I am not sorry that I bought the book, but I don't think I will be able to use it like I had hoped.
Enjoy the show more than the book.......2006-05-19
I enjoy watching the show, but I didn't get the same things out of the book. Basically the book recaps how they acheived their version of the designer room - something that is fun to watch but not so interesting to read about.
Full of Decorating Tips, even if you don't watch Sensible Chic.......2006-01-29
This book is based on the TV show Sensible Chic. It takes an inspiration room and tries to create a "similar" room without the high cost of the inspiration room. Like another reviewer, in this book, many of the rooms DID look better than the inspiration room. This is probably because the "Sensible" rooms were generally not as foo-foo (my word) and less cluttered than the inspiration room. The show and the book are good if you need a jumping off point and don't have any idea where to start. If you find a photo of a room you like, then you can try to create a similar room based on YOUR budget.
One disappointment in the book though is that many of the "Sensible" items are not referenced anywhere. The book tells you how much they spent on each item in the room, along with the cost of the inspiration items, but in the back of the book, there might not be a reference to where you can locate the item. For example, Lesson One is a bedroom with an Iron Canopy bed. The inspiration bed was $6,000 and the "Sensible" bed was $235. In the back of the book, the only resource they list is the designer who did the room. There is nothing about where they bought the furniture, bedding, fabrics, paint, etc. which is a red flag when you are trying to show how to do something on a budget. I thought the lesson was full of good tips though regarding color, texture, fabrics and such. There are some rooms that the resources ARE listed.
I liked the information given in the book and thought it was helpful and easy to follow. Even though the book is text heavy, it is easy to follow because the paragraph that starts new information has titles. There were call out boxes that had specific tips, i.e. "Pattern Perfect" which gave you tips on how to mix fabric patterns successfully. I thought the photography was great!
For those who like these types of before and after shows, there is a new TV decorating show called "Double Take" that takes the inspiration room and tries to create the exact room on a budget, unlike Sensible Chic that tries to create a similar room on a budget.
I do recommend this book. I think even if you have never watched the show, it has some excellent tips and information on how to match looks and decorate your rooms tastefully.
check it out from the library.......2005-08-09
I thought this book was disappointing. I was looking for more general ideas on how to decorate, but this book doesn't give that type of information. It shows specific rooms and how they were decorated. Also, in the quiz to find your decorating style, there are 20 question, and I scored 5 points in three of the categories (Traditional, Country, and Ethinic.) So, you'd think there would be a section on decorating in an ecletic style, but there isn't. If you want to see this book for decorating ideas, check it out from the library before buying--you'll be glad you didn't spend the money.
A sensible choice.......2005-02-24
I am a big fan of the show! I found the book to have a variety of room styles. They offered tips to create the look and broke down the budget showing how the money was spent. I did expect a little more though. I've seen so many great episodes and I found myself wondering, "how come they didn't include the room from that episode". Nevertheless, it's still a book worth buying.
Book Description
You want a concise how-to book on graphic design that avoids all the theory and just gets down to the nuts and bolts of getting a project done? Then this book is for you. It includes hundreds of projects for logos, letterheads, businesses cards, newsletters, and website design that even the most design-challenged individual can accomplish easily with impressive results.
The templates are here -- all you have to do is follow the easy-to-understand recipes for executing the projects. There's no guessing involved. Project recipes cover setting dimensions for page layouts; recommendations for type, including its name and the suggested point size; color ideas; paper information; sources for graphics and photographs; and a complete production guide.
This book is the one sure thing every non-designer can count on to create winning designs.
Customer Reviews:
Helps you Remember.......2007-09-04
I recommend this book as more of a reference than a comprehensive guide. Though aspiring designers may get a lot of ideas from this book, I found it more mix-and-match or quick-fix, complementing what I already know about design. To me, it shouldn't be treated even as a short design course.
I use this book to help me as a refresher, and it's very effective that way.
(I wish, though, that I had waited for the smaller paperback to come out. The size of the hardcover isn't space-friendly. The smaller one would have been perfect.)
Design it Yourself:Graphic Workshop.......2006-11-10
Although many reviews felt that this was a necessary addition to their graphic design library - I felt that it was too elementary for me. I am a very experienced designer and graphic design professor and I found the projects too simplistic. If I had an opportunity to thumb the book prior to purchase - I would not have purchased this title. It is really for beginners.
Excellent Resource.......2006-07-03
Important to note that this book is not just another portfolio of good work. Chuck Green demonstrates clearly and concisely the process of creating the outstanding work presented in the book.
Can't Believe My Eyes!.......2006-01-21
Until now I purchased 7 graphic design books. In fact,
I used to like them, until I found this book, which
destroyed them all. I wish if Design-It-Yourself was
the first one I purchased!
Anyway, it is great and detailed reference you should
not miss out if you are in graphic design business.
This book doesn't only cover the different design
aspects. In fact, it digs even deeper!
Why it's my favorite:
---------------------
1. Simple but detailed!
(Illustrates in pictures all what is needed to know in a
simple way and without saying too much)
2. Colorful
(Inspires and gives a better understanding of the content)
3. Combines two areas
(Graphic design and touches slightly business branding)
4. Hardcover
(A reference that you will not be able to put down since
you catch! So, this way it will last longer)
5. I don't want to be unfair when writing this review
(This book contains even more reasons to buy than what
I just mentioned above)
Thank you Chuck Green for the great effort you put
into this great reference :)
Good professional reference book.......2005-10-11
Beautifully ilustrated, full of graphics, done by a top pro, no question probably one of the best self help books on the market.
I`d like to see a more in deep chapter about prepress issues, (an area where everybody is totally lost, even some so called designers)preparing your design for delivery to a commercial printer, color separation, proofing etc.
