Book Description

The two main occupations in Limoges, Louisiana (population: 905), seem to be spreading juicy gossip and consoling the unfortunate with casseroles. And in this early spring of 1952, there is ample opportunity for both—with sixteen-year-old and pregnant (by the Baptist minister) Olive Nepper, currently languishing in a coma after drinking pop laced with rose poison. But the plight of Olive and her family is hardly the only story spicing up the rumor mill in this small Southern community of unpredictable eccentrics, wandering husbands, and unsatisfied wives—and few local sins will be put right by home cooking.

From Michael Lee West comes a beautifully rendered portrait of small-town Southern life, filled with humanity that brilliantly weaves comedy with dark calamity.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not her best.......2006-05-31

Since I loved Mad Girls In Love and Crazy Ladies, I bought this book simply because West wrote it.
The [...] and the recipes took away from the book which was good, once I waded through the [...] and the recipes. I started the book and gave up about 20 pages into it, then went back to give it another shot and wound up enjoying it.
I do enjoy books written in this fashion - a story told through several narrators. I found some of the stories depressing, especially that of Sophie, and didn't mind at all, as another reviewer said, some of the "killing off" that takes place near the end.
Simply, the book is about small town, small minded people with little to do other than gossip, screw and cook. You wouldn't think there'd be much of a book there but there is.
Olive is knocked up by a preacher who is biffing anything female in Limoges - without regard to age. She drinks poison and spends the book in a coma while those around her get their beds mixed up all over town.
Those you root for come out OK... those who deserve it are worm food.

2 out of 5 stars Southern Fast Food.......2006-02-16

-- A colorful smorgasbord of life, food, relationships, death, sex, and (perhaps the most pervasive theme in American literature) isolation within community. Yes ladies and gentleman, West attempts all this and more in her Cajun black comedy She Flew the Coop. The story is told by a myriad of characters, the most convincing of which is an old Negro maid named Sophia, who's still in love with her violent river-dwelling husband. And that is the extent of my praise. West's other characters get bogged down by pop clichés and never get off the ground in terms of development or complexity. Still, the story may have flown had West not laced the entire narrative with copious amounts of gratuitous sex. The result? An unsatisfying read that tastes more like KFC take out than the home-cooked southern supper I was hoping for.

4 out of 5 stars Depressing but quirky..........2005-12-05

I liked this book, but found it to be a bit depressing although extremely well written. It wasn't a quick read for me (and I usually read a book this size in about a day) as I kept putting it down and coming back to it. The recipes and newspaper articles, along with the general writing style make it a fun, though not perfect read. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars She Flew the Coop - and so Did the Story.......2005-08-10

While West has great characters and intriguing developments, one gets the sense that she just got tired of writing and decided to end the book. One also gets the sense she doesn't like her characters much - as she ends up killing many of them off - but not before giving you lots of details about their sex lives. I mean, I'm one for steamy scenes - but this almost seems - superfluous. I want to know - where are you taking me in the story. And in the end - I'm still not sure. Lots of great intros to life themes and characters - but - oh I'm sorry, they're having sex again and I'm distracted. West has promise, but needs a good editor and someone to yell FOCUS ON YOUR STORY! Also, the print in the paperback, must be bigger. I have good young eyes, and reading it just made me tired after awhile, because it was so miniscule.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible!.......2004-12-11

This book is awful! I read it because of the good rating it has, but I can't figure out how all these people enjoyed it. I'm not hard to please, I read a lot of books and this is the first one I have ever given such a poor rating. I kept with it, hoping something interesting was about to happen, but it never did.

        Book Description

The Thirty Years War continues to ravage 17th century Europe, but a new force is gathering power and influence: the Confederated Principalities of Europe, an alliance between Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, and the West Virginians from the 20th century led by Mike Stearns who were hurled centuries into the past by a mysterious cosmic accident. The democratic ideals of the CPE have aroused the implacable hostility of Cardinal Richelieu, effective ruler of France, who has moved behind the scenes, making common cause with old enemies to stop this new threat to the privileged and powerful. But the CPE is also working in secret. A group of West Virginians have secretly traveled to Venice where their advanced medical knowledge may prevent the recurrence of the terrible plague which recently killed a third of the city-state's population. At the same time, the group hopes to establish commercial ties with Turkey's Ottoman Empire, then at the height of its power. And, most important, they hope to establish private diplomatic ties with the Vatican, exploiting Pope Urban VIII's misgivings about the actions of Richelieu and the Hapsburgs. But a Venetian artisan involved with the West Virginians may cause all their plans to come to naught. Having read 20th century history books of the period, he has become determined to rescue Galileo from his trial for heresy. The Americans are divided on whether to help him or stop him-and whether he succeeds or fails, the results may be catastrophic for the CPE.

          Book Description

In this Spanish version of The Mastery of Love, don Miguel Ruiz illuminates the fear-based beliefs and assumptions that undermine love and lead to suffering and drama in relationships. Using insightful stories to bring his message to life, Ruiz shows how to heal emotional wounds, recover the freedom and joy that are one's birthright, and restore the playfulness that is vital to loving relationships. Among the themes explored are the Toltec wisdom of the heart and the war of control.

Rooted in the cuisines of North America, Europe, and Africa, Southern cooking is delicious, classic fare. But according to Damon Lee Fowler's New Southern Cooking, traditional dishes like fried chicken, gumbo, cornbread, and pecan pie aren't the whole story. Stating that Southern cooking as such makes sense only if we recognize it as the result of multiple interpretations over time, Fowler presents his versions of traditional dishes that also take into account today's busy, health-conscious world. His recipe for Grilled Pork Tenderloins with Bourbon Mustard Glaze, for example, honors the Southern passion for pork, but uses a lean cut of meat. The result of Fowler's approach is 160 easily made recipes that salute the old and the new delectably.

In chapters that cover every course from appetizers and snacks to breads and desserts, Fowler finds innovative ways with quintessential Southern ingredients, offering the likes of Baked Pecan-Crusted Goat Cheese with Warm Peach Chutney, Green Tomato Gumbo, and even Sweet Potato Latkes with Homemade Applesauce and Crème Fraîche. He also offers polished examples of traditional fare, including Grilled Breaded Veal Chops, Scalloped Eggplant a la Creole, and, of course, Buttermilk Fried Chicken (touched unconventionally with garlic). Bread lovers will dote on Fowler's Cinnamon Pecan Drop Biscuits, while fans of dessert should swoon for the likes of Maryan's Chocolate Pound Cake, Lemon Pecan Pie, and Shortbread Banana Pudding. With menus and a useful list of ingredient sources, the book is an exciting addition to the Southern cookbook shelf. --Arthur Boehm

          Book Description

WHAT'S SO NEW ABOUT THE NEW SOUTHERN KITCHEN?

It's the way Damon Lee Fowler, author of Classical Southern Cooking, coaxes the timeless flavors of yesterday from the markets and kitchens of today. Rather than simply reproduce traditional Southern food, Fowler presents more than 160 mouthwatering, perfect-every-time recipes that take into account how we come by ingredients, the equipment we use to prepare them, and our more health-conscious way of living. The result is food that honors the spirit, the history, and especially the taste of the classic Southern table.

Southern cooking, as most people think of it, doesn't exist. After all, there are as many ways to make "real" corn bread, gumbo, or fried chicken as there are cooks. So instead of dwelling on hidebound notions of authenticity, Fowler focuses on the essence of great Southern food, combining traditional ingredients in fresh ways and finding nuances of flavor and texture that may have been overlooked before.

This is an unapologetically opinionated and singular book, both colored by the tastes of the author's palate, upbringing, and experiences, and connected to every cook who has ever and will ever step into a kitchen with a Southern idea of flavor in mind. In these pages you won't find "nouveau" Southern dishes that simply add cilantro or jalapeño peppers. You will find Pecan-Crusted Goat Cheese with Warm Peach Chutney, combining the best of old and new Southern elements. Pan-Broiled Pork Tenderloins with Caramelized Onions honors the Southern passion for pig but uses a lean cut of meat. Asparagus Shortcake and Shrimp and Green Tomato Gumbo put a savory twist on old favorites. Pound Cake Sandwiches, made with Bourbon Pound Cake; Orange-Praline Trifle; and Sweet Potato Ice Cream are all soul-satisfying endings to any meal.

With suggested menus and resources for finding the best Southern ingredients, Damon Lee Fowler's New Southern Kitchen is sure to become a contemporary classic and an essential volume in every cookbook library, whether north or south of the Mason-Dixon line.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Helpful.......2007-01-09

Damon Lee Fowler is an entertaining author and an experience chef. I was seeking a cookbook with the traditional Southern flavor updated for current trends and methods. This book was close. The reason I did not give New Southern Kitchen five stars was that the recipe I tried, Pork Loin in Milk, was disappointing. The dish I was expecting was a Pork Loin similar to Smothered Pork Chops, what I got was a milk stewed loin that disappointed. Could have been my cooking but usually I can tell if it is me or the recipe and I don't think it was me. My wife enjoyed the dish but not with the gusto of my Smothered Pork Chops
I do plan on giving a copy to my daughter for her birthday.

5 out of 5 stars Tasting great, authentic, and not fattening.......2004-06-21

I am really impressed with this book. The author truly has zest for life, knows his subject as a professional who understands differences between cooking at a restaurant and in a modern kitchen, and has a great sense of humor. I have tried a number of recipes, found them quite easy to follow, and the results came out from very good to excellent to exceed expectations. All of the dishes that I produced in my small kitchen following the author's directions had just as much character as the author seems to have :), and none of the recipes seemed intimidating or unreasonably demanding. It was also a pleasure to read all the stories coming with the cuisine and people who sustain it.

5 out of 5 stars i cannot believe i am the first one to rate this book!.......2003-08-23

A wonderful cookbook by a witty and passionate home cook. Everything i tried tasted great - simple recipes, few ingredients, complex tastes - for Southerners and Non-Sotherners alike. In a strange way, it reminds me of another great cookbook: "Parisian Home Cooking" by Michael Reynolds.
As an European living in the South, I find this book both inspirational and modern.

          Book Description

n Warmly Inscribed, the Goldstones investigate one of the dirty secrets in the world of book collectingforgeries. The tale of the New England forger is one that rocked the antiquarian book world in the late 1990s, with its effects still being feltand with forged copies still on the market! The Goldstones not only reveal how the forger managed to fool collectors, but also how many booksellers chose to turn a blind eye to the suspicious books. With their typically warm and insightful style, the Goldstones both inform and entertain in their latest excursion into the divine madness that is book collecting.

5 out of 5 stars Great for book lovers.......2006-01-23

This pair write tales for bibliophiles, and this is their third book-about-books, featuring every aspect of the bibliouniverse, including: collecting, libraries, book fairs, catalogue and Internet trading, rare book dealers, independent booksellers, readers, and writers. In this volume, we meet Ken Anderson, the `New England Forger' who specialized in Pound, Yeats, and Eliot signed volumes before he was caught; we visit the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Reading Room of the British Museum, and the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale.

The two highly likable writers/readers/collectors, sometimes with daughter Emily in tow, warmly open their lives to their readers who, like them, get excited by books and appreciate the connections with people across time and place, with all their idiosyncrasies and passions. The Goldstone's books are not-to-be-missed gems.

5 out of 5 stars A charming book about books and collecting.......2004-05-10

Authors Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone are also book collectors and, in "Warmly Inscribed," they share their experiences in the used, rare and antiquarian book world. The tales are charming and anecdotal, filled with their love of books, and come across very conversationally, as if you were chatting with them over coffee instead of reading their adventures in a book. Also, it makes that particular world seem less stuffy and very accessible to everyone.

Each chapter shares a small bit of the vast world of books and booklore, from the first chapter that deals with the immense colleciton of the Library of Congress (as well as their lovable eight-year-old daughter Emily and a missing teddy bear) to the true story of the New England forger Ken Anderson who created quite a to-do with the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America. Plus, they give much of the history of books, bookfairs, and even a glimpse into the life of writer Max Beerbohm.

This is a wonderful book to read, whether you're into book collecting or not.

4 out of 5 stars The Goldstones get going.......2004-02-27

I liked this book better than their first two. The somewhat precious plural narration is considerably more charming when it's not so constant, and their travels here are usefully varied. Most of all, this book is meatier, which really helps. The informative section about the New England forger adds a needed note of factual reportage. For me it anchors the rest of the book.

I knew the Washington book scene fairly well at one point, and their account is a mixed success. The section on the Library of Congress is nicely done, but they managed to miss the two best bookstores in town: Booked Up, which they knew about but somehow couldn't manage to get into (?), and Andy Moursund's Georgetown Books in Bethesda. Also, although it's true that more people should know about it, I feel their appraisal of the Folger is lame and tame--the Folger always struck me as a really odd museum, consistently barely interesting enough to warrant a visit yet almost ludicrously top-heavy with Shakespeare First Folios. In this day and age, is there any conceivable need to have 79 First Folios in one place? Any independent-minded curator, it seems to me, would divest two-thirds of them to fund a broadening of the collection and an enlivening of the exhibits. (It's also almost anti-conservationist to have all of them together, where they might all be destroyed at one fell swoop by a natural disaster or an act of terrorism. It would be much better for their safety to spread them around a bit.) I would have liked a more critical viewpoint here.

The Goldstones are not only savvier book people now, which is a relief (I found the "Duh, what's a nice book?" tone of "Used and Rare" too benighted), but they're getting to be better writers, too. The set-piece about Bearite is a hoot, and, despite her sparing appearances, Emily is strongly characterized as a sidekick--I really laughed at the vision of her sitting in the audience at sparsely attended book signings asking her parents how long it took them to write their book. I hope she figures more prominently in book #4. Next time, England? Archer? Get going, Goldstones!

5 out of 5 stars The Goldstones are Back!.......2002-02-28

The third of the Goldstones' collecting books (after Used and Rare: Travels in the Book World and Slightly Chipped*: *Footnotes in Booklore) is just as charming and whimsical--and educational--as the first two. The Goldstones are a delightful couple with a warm writing style that is easy to read and keeps you coming back.

Apart from the title of the book, which seems to have no relation to its contents, I have only one complaint: the central story of the New England forger goes on for too long. I was kept interested throughout, but I felt that it could have ended sooner.

Other than that, this is a terrific, quick read, and if you are fans of books and collecting you will not be disappointed.

Go beyond simply stringing beads together--learn to weave them into beautiful textural patterns to create jewelry, bowls, baskets, purses, and even sculpture. With the step-by-step instructions and detailed diagrams in this guide, the seven stitches (peyote, brick, square, right angle, African helix, netting, and chevron chain) and their variations aren't terribly difficult to learn. Although they may take patience and some time to master, even the beginner can produce simple, attractive pieces. Beaders with more experience will be inspired to new heights of invention upon viewing the full-color gallery of spectacular bead weaving creations contributed by various artists to this attractive book. --Amy Handy

4 out of 5 stars various and sundry techniques.......2007-07-19

This book contains most of the beadweaving techniques that I've ever heard about as well as how to combine stitches. While I would call it a reference book, for the most part, it has lots of projects as well. I haven't made any of the projects to date but think the instructions are excellent. If you need to know how to switch stitches in your off-loom work.........you won't be unhappy if you purchase this book.

            5 out of 5 stars 2nd Best Beading Book.......2007-07-10

I've only found 1 other bead weaving book as good as this one and it's also by Carol Wilcox Wells, "The Art and Elegance of Beadweaving". This one has great diagrams, guidance on what beads and colors to use, and a beautiful gallery of projects to do and ones to be inspired by. It is also a great buy in paperback. My advice is buy both of her books.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on beadweaving on the market!.......2006-12-30

I have a bunch of beadweaving books, but THIS is the one I refer to when I forget a stitch or need some technical help with increasing or decreasing. Nice projects and instructions are written clearly. If you buy only one book on beadweaving, it should be this one!

4 out of 5 stars Creative Bead Weaving...........2006-08-19

I love the book. It has lots of beautiful inspiring pieces. It's more of a book for intermediate and advanced beaders than beginners in my opinion, but that doesn't mean a beginner wouldn't get something out of purchasing it. I retun to the book over and over again for helpful tips and tricks and inspiration. I highly recommend it.

The Organized Home strives to bring order and calm to the chaotic, possession-filled lives of today's consumer. Society, in general, needs to lighten up, but many find it difficult to part with the stuff that has come to define who we are. The Organized Homed is filled with professional advice, hard-working information, and checklists that help readers get organized. Once that goal is achieved, it shows readers how they can improve their lifestyle to create the organized, peaceful, and beautiful home they desire.

The book walks readers through the organizational process and addresses everything, including how to clear the mind; how to keep what you need and store the rest; how to organize books, magazines, mail, papers, time, money, kitchens, closets, and countertops; and much more.

I bought this book because I have an average sized home without very much storage space and wanted to maximize my space. What a waste! I don't know where these authors live, but clearly it is not on the same planet as me! For example, one of their brillant suggestions is to install a refridgerater in your laundry area for drinks and snacks so you won't need to leave your ironing to go to the kitchen and thus interupt your ironing. a) in today's world of wash-and-wear, who sits down and does a weeks worth of ironing? b) if I had room for a fridge in my laundry area, I wouldn't have bought this book! They also suggest keeping a household journal for various things such as noting where you stored your spring candles when you put them away to make room for you winter candles. You can also note which brands worked best, and which scents you prefer. Also, when you are at social engagements and friends happen to mention their food allergies and/or preferences, you can write them down on a little slip of paper and later transcribe into your journal to reference when you give dinner parties. Who are these people??? Don't buy a copy of this book--you can find mine for free in the trash heap.

                  1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!.......2007-08-21

The book has pretty pictures, so why not hire author Randall Koll, who is not a certified interior designer? It may turn out to be a very costly mistake. We hired Randall in the fall of 2006 to organize and furnish our home. In January 2007, Randall was given a check for thousands of dollars to buy furniture. It is now August 2007 and our home is still not organized and we still do not have new furniture. Randall has not returned any calls or e-mails since May. So save your money and learn from our expensive mistake.

5 out of 5 stars Stylish and practical.......2006-06-30

I have two young children, a packrat mate, a home-based business, and a newly purchased, super tiny apartment. Need I say how easy it would be to drown in a sea of clutter?

Koll and Ellis' book is full of beautiful photographs and simple suggestions for taming the stuff in your life while leaving room to celebrate it. I've read too many magazine articles and websites that make the reader feel guilty or inept, this is a book that understands that organization isn't tyranny but emancipation. I also love how many of their concepts are budget-friendly.

Although many of the photos in the book feature spaces far more expansive than my own, the ideas the authors present for everything from storage solutions to good housekeeping habits are easy to implement. If I had room for a coffee table, this would be a lovely addition to it.

i have been working on the "clutter" in my home, and this book had good ideas and helpful pictures to go with them. i am on a tight budget, but was able to take ideas and mostly just use things i already have, just adding some baskets and bins here and there. i recommend it!

Like the other reviewers, I love this book! If you love your stuff, want to keep it, but need great ideas on how to "contain the clutter" and beautifully display your rooms, this book is for you. Each chapter contains several ideas for organizing the different areas of the home. It covers many decorating styles and tastes. It's all about functional yet beautiful furnishings that work for your lifestyle. I can't say enough--buy the book and you will see what I mean.

There are very few books on Sinead O'Connor out there. I've managed to find two of them. I've got the one by Jimmy Gutterman, "Sinead: Her Life and Music". I can assure you "Sinead O'Connor: So Different" by Dermott Hayes is by far the better book! Dermott Hayes relies on published articles and interviews (as does Gutterman), but Hayes also does his homework, interviewing plenty of people (family, friends, neighbors, ex-band mates) who knew Sinead before she became famous. This is what makes it so interesting and superior. Also, there are many rare photos in the book. Photos of Sinead's childhood home, her birth certificate, her student ID card, her father, brother, and Sinead at age 8. The book gets into Sinead's troubled childhood, her mother's abuse, Sinead's schooling and stay at the home for wayward girls, her first band, first record contract, first taste of fame. People who knew Sinead are quoted throughout. There's a lengthy discography. Keep in mind this book was published in 1990, so it only goes up to her "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" release. I don't believe anyone has bothered to write a book on Sinead O'Connor since the early '90's, so this is what her true fans should look for. If you bother to search for any out-of-print Sinead O'Connor book, this is your best bet. It's worth it for all the information and rare photos.
