Book Description
The Stone that the Builder Refused is the final volume of Madison Smartt Bell’s masterful trilogy about the Haitian Revolution–the first successful slave revolution in history–which begins with All Souls' Rising (a finalist for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award) and continues with Master of the Crossroads. Each of these three novels can be read independently of the two others; of the trilogy, The Baltimore Sun has said, “[It] will make an indelible mark on literary history–one worthy of occupying the same shelf as Tolstoy’s War and Peace.”

a depressing conclusion to an excellent story.......2005-01-03
I had read the first 2 books of this trilogy and looked forward to the third with a great deal of anticipation. After a hundred pages, however, I felt a sinking sensation as I realized that this story could not possibly have a happy ending. Bell had done such an excellent job realizing his characters that I felt deeply involved in their lives. After the horrendous atrocities of slavery and the slave revolts and subsequent battles, it seemed that the island was finally at some sort of peace.
But what a price! Then as the French arrived to re-assert their primacy and General Louveture succumbs to hubris the precarious peace falls apart and the bloodshed begins again with blacks against whites.
This last book completes the trilogy and tells a story that few of us know anything about. Haiti is a huge mystery to me and these books helped me understand a little why this country is the way it is. The legacy of slavery and the battles that were required to end it as well as the enduring suspicians between white and black are lessons for all of us even at this time (maybe particularly at this time).
A Truly Great Series Of Historical Novels........2004-12-22
The three novels in this series are the best historical novels I have ever read. They deal with a horrifying event, the slave rebellion in Haiti. Bell does not flinch from the horrors the contending groups and individuals inflicted on each other. The historical background is well covered in the plot and appendix. Written by a master novelist. Bell also covers fascinating subjects like the Voodoo mythos that still exists in Haiti today. Reading this novel, one begins to understand the chaos of Haiti today. A country born in this much bloodshed and hatred is destined for more. In terms of gallons of blood spilled, our own revolution was a mere skirmish.
If you are at all interested in Haiti, race, relations, history, or just reading a good story, you should read this and the other two novels in the series, All Souls Rising and The Master Of The Crossroads.

Really Horrible.......2006-06-30
I have read some of SH's books before and some of her stories are really good, but this one turned me off, I hated the lead male role , he was a pig, always getting jeolous about what happened in the female lead's past. Come on what a jerk! And there was so much-"I love him I hate him and vise versa" I just wanted to tear the book up and throw it away. In the end I just thought why would any female what to get back with such a jerk.
A great read.......2006-02-25
If you haven't discovered Shiloh Walker yet, this is a great place to start. She's taken both a hero and heroine with dark secrets and hidden problems, teased and tantalized you with their love, made you gnash your teeth over the obstacles in their path and yes, their stubbornness, then brought them together in a highly satisfying conclusion. And let's not forget the terrific love scenes. Shiloh writes in a manner that rabs you and doesn;t let go. I highly recommend this book.
Do you want to Read a book that will engage your emotions?.......2005-12-23
Then this is the book for you. Ms. Walker pens a novel that reels you in from the beginning. She takes you along with the hero and heroine as they work their way back to each other. It is wonderfully written and tugs at your heart until you are hoping that everything works for out for them. I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it.

Nikki didn't think she could cope with having to look into Wade's eyes and see the love there. And she knew she couldn't handle seeing him with his precious daughter, the wide eyed little girl who looked at Nikki with adoration. All she wants is to be left alone, and protect what was left of her heart. But Wade doesn't seem to want to take no for an answer.

Tear Jerker.......2003-10-08
No Longer Mine was riveting, and I could not put it down. Ms. Gage keeps the reader on their seat, twisting the characters just enough to make you question the ending. No Longer Mine follows Wade and Nikki through all aspects of a relationship-anger, betrayal, loss, and reconciliation.
No Longer Mine is a prequel to Her Best Friend's Lover (Shiloh Walker), and fits the puzzle pieces together.
Emotional Tale from a Magnificent Author.......2003-07-31
...Powerful, heart-wrenching, stunning surprises, love and loss will grip readers from start to finish in NO LONGER MINE.
Readers will not be able to put this story down once they begin. The characters, the heartbreak, the love that transcended time will break your heart, make you cry and make you believe in love, forgiveness and family.
The characters pain come through strong with this author's words. The pain of love and time lost, grief for the loss of a child, guilt and forgiveness.
The relationship between Nikki and Wade when they were young is sweet and romantic as a first love should be, until lies tore them apart...

Layers of mystery wrap Planetary: All over the World like rice candy. Follow the enigmatic heroes Jakita Wagner, Elijah Snow, and the Drummer as they excavate the secret history of the world from its wealth of bizarre happenings. Though the characterization isn't sparklingly brilliant--the "insane" Drummer behaves more like the A-Team's Murdock than a believable madman--the stories are both broad and deep, exploring a web of conspiracies and shadowy superheroes that manipulate and "protect" our world. Clever retellings of primal comics myths are interlaced with X-Files-esque secret government tales, and they drive the reader back and forth to collate evidence; the characters can't do all the work. Illustrator John Cassaday mirrors Warren Ellis's script from circumspect to sublime, befitting the best successor yet to the pulp comics of the 1940s. --Rob Lightner

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
It is hard to put into words the genius mythologising found within the pages of Planetary. Basically, twisted heroes as villains, pulp analogues, adventurers, and the secrets in the corners of the world, and the relationships between all those mentioned above. Just pure gold. This is Ellis' genius and knowledge of pop culture shown at its very best.
Come for the artwork, stay for the derivative but inspiring story.......2007-06-11
I originally came to this series because I liked John Cassaday's artwork in "Desperados" immensely, and I wanted to see what he could do when he was given a chance to stretch out. The guy sure did deliver; "Planetary" features page after page of fantastic design work, reminsicent of everyone from Wally Wood and Kelly Freas to almost every fantasy/adventure newspaper strip (Flash Gordon, Prince Valiant) that was ever worthwhile. Cassaday is so damned good, in fact, that it may take you a while to realize how good he really is; he's understated and subtle, he knows when to back off and add quiet, restful moments, and his line work is somewhat lighter and more refined than a Kirby clone or a Steranko-wannabe. This is not to underplay the high quality of the coloring and lettering and production work in the title, but they just give CassaDay a boost instead making him work against them.
Ellis does his usual gig of combining cynicism, paranoia, sentimentality, gonzo humor, biting wit and genuinely interesting interpretations of classic comic book cliches and institutions. (After you see what "The Four" have done to the world of "Planetary", you may never be able to look at Marvel's "Fantastic Four" the same way again.) "Planetary" is especially intriguing because of the central mystery of the history and motivations of its two main characters (the Drummer doesn't really count as a main character, because he is obviously just following Jakita's lead) and the shadowy conspiracy they may or may not be opposing.
The nature of the series allows the "main" mystery to be explored via individual "stand alone" issues that are affectionate revivals and tributes of all kinds of pop culture and sci fi classics. You never know who or what the next issue will be about. A version of Doc Savage shows up early, as does Godzilla and Alex Raymond's pulp adventures and anime twists and Hong Kong cinema themes as well. But each issue also has revealed clues and hints as to what is "really" going on here (Ellis calls it "the secret history of the 20th century).
Some reviewers have criticized the early volumes in the series as being weak in characterization and maybe a little "flat". I think this was a deliberate choice by the series' creators, since the early volumes are laying the groundwork for deeper, more revealing events in the 2nd set of six, but it's a valid criticism. If you don't have a lot of fondness and affection for old icons like Doc Savage, the Hulk, Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, etc., many of the early issues may leave you cold. For what it's worth, what the characters lack in depth in the early issues, they make up in attitude and snappy dialog.
Whether Ellis will finally be able to deliver a satisfying conclusion or flame out like David Lynch did with "Twin Peaks" is anyone's guess. But I'm not worried about it...I'm just enjoying the ride.
To paraphrase Joe Queenan, if we had 10 comics writers like Ellis, we'd be living in a Golden Age of comics storytelling. But we don't and we're not. That's OK...there are gems among the rubbish, and this is definitely a gem. Great stuff.
Interesting Beginning.......2006-05-17
For a while now, I've heard a lot of good things about Warren Ellis' Planetary. Taking place in the Wildstorm universe (Wildstorm is a subsidiary of DC Comics), Planetary is somewhat like the X-Files; three agents, Elijah Snow, Jakita Wagner, and The Drummer investigate strange phenomena in order to understand the secret history of the 20th century. They are funded by "the Fourth Man", an individual (very little is known about them, not even their gender) with wealth beyond most people's wildest dreams. He/she is known as the Fourth Man because the Planetary field team has always been comprised of three people. In addition to the field team, there are Planetary offices across the world.
Each of the three members has their own unique superpowers. Snow can decrease the temperature in objects around him, Wagner has super strength, speed, and endurance, and Drummer can psychically communicate with machines. Their travels bring them in contact with other super-beings whose very existence has remained secret for years. Many of their adventures lead them to discoveries that parallel the superbeings in the more mainstream DC and Marvel universes, as well as science fiction in general. From a story about the ghost of a cop out for revenge (DC's Spectre) to a trip to Japan where they find an island full of giant bugs and lizards (Godzilla), the Planetary team try to contain these secrets as well as increase their knowledge of the multiverse.
In the final issue of this collection, a supergroup known as the Four (Marvel's Fantastic Four) are introduced, and we are told that they are the antithesis of Planetary, but we don't yet see why.
Ellis' story is certainly interesting, but these first few issues (including the 8-page introduction that was released in other Wildstorm titles such as Gen-13) present many many questions and almost no answers. While this isn't always a bad thing (as fans of ABC's LOST are aware) it is hard to jump into this series. I plan to continue it, but be aware that while these first few issues are definitely good, they aren't as good as I had been told they were.
Investigating the secret history of planet Earth.......2006-04-09
"Planetary" is a nice mix of traditional comics story-telling and more offbeat, challenging fare like the works of Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, etc. It's traditional in that its various issues involve such comics and popular fiction icons like superheroes, Godzilla-type monsters, pulp adventure heroes, multiple universes, and the like. It's offbeat because it treats those subjects in a darker, edgier way than we're used to seeing.
For example, "Planetary" posits that if there really were superheroes, they probably wouldn't be as white-bread pure as in the typical Marvel or DC offering (indeed, this series' version of the Fantastic Four, seen toward the end of this volume, is shaping up to be the villainous presence of the series). This idea is nothing new, of course, if you've read Alan Moore's "Watchmen", various DC/Vertigo titles, and other titles aimed at the "for mature readers" crowd on the shelves these days. But while "Planetary" definitely gets edgy, dark, and challenging like those works, it also celebrates popular comic book storytelling by giving us enthusiastic action scenes, big set pieces, exciting revelations, etc., genuinely having fun with the fact that in many ways it's a regular ol' comic book. "Planetary" has it both ways and revels in it.
This initial collection includes the first six issues of the original comics series, along with the short, appetite-whetting "Planetary" preview story that ran in the back of a couple of other comics titles just prior to this series' debut.
Are mainstream superhero comics a little bland for you these days, but you also find the edgier, adult fare out there not as exciting and engaging as you like your comics to be? Give the heroic investigators of "Planetary" a shot. I'll bet you won't be sorry.
Good concept, but . . . ........2005-06-08
Alan Moore's introduction promises more than this collection delivers. However, there's enough here to suggest the series will develop and it would be premature to dismiss "Planetary" entirely on the basis on this one book. These first six issues (collected) establish the formula for the series, but neglect to develop the three main characters. Try "Planetary" only after you've exhausted Moore's own work.

Learn To Think Like A Tibetan.......2007-05-06
Forgive me if I respond first to the review below that said "watch out! This isn't Buddhism!" What that person doesn't know is Tenzin Rinpoche's books are usually prefaced by the Dalai Lama--that's how accepted this is as a legitimate spiritual pathway. This isn't like western religions where diversity means you have to burn somebody at the stake. Everybody is openly accepted for what of value they can offer and Bon has a very alive dzogchen transmission that is second to none. Sorry for this digression.
Anyway, what I liked about his book--other than the fact that Tenzin Wangyal is tops in the Tibetan community in his ability to communicate clearly with westerners (you'll be amazed)is the fact that this book is kind of a lesson in how Tibetans think--which is not required certainly, but if you are studying Tibetan spirituality and are really serious it's something you will find helpful.
LIke his book on Dream Yoga it is extremely readable and is something you can digest with no forehead massaging. I have met Tenzin Wangyal and he is a really good person and nice guy and I always remember in the sleepy period after lunch him chuckling looking out at the sleepy group and saying, "It's earth-element time."
This is a painless way to fill in a gap in your attempts to understand the culture and spirituality of Tibet.
good reference book.......2007-03-11
If you have a basic understanding of other five element practices, this book is a great resource to round out understanding from the Tibetan Bon teaching. It also covers what in TCM are the Jing, Qi and Shen levels of the Bon approach. Very clearly and openly. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's writing style and felt the generousity of spirit in his writing. But remember that information does not make a practice, only a practice makes a practice.
watch out.......2006-11-23
As the teachings of Buddhism cross the pacific ocean, it is very difficult to know what is true and what is false. this is false teachings. We here in the United States think that we live in a world that there are many choices and that we can pick and choose.
Our deluded thinking that we have the ability to choose what is best is absolutely wrong.
this book steals from Vajrayana Buddhism but is aligned with Bonpo. All buddhist and those that are trying to learn about Vajrayana Buddhism, just do not buy. Look to the sacred text of true Vajrayana teachers such as Padmasambava, Patrul Rinpoche, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Dudjom Rinpoche, Thinley Norbu.
In Tibet, only those that are regarded a true teachers have the right to teach and be a guide. Beware of those that come with nice sounding words but have not wisdom.
You want to follow Bonpo, then buy this book as well as those from Namkai Norbu. But for the rest, those that seek full awakening through the path of Vajrayana buddhism, this book will only lead you astray.
Best book on the subject available.......2006-06-07
The title is not a put-down of books like "Rainbow of Liberated Energy" or "The Five Wisdom Energies". They do particular justice to the subject of the five 'elements'. The point that I want to make is that I liked this one best, not just because of the friendly and precise writing style, but because this one goes to the roots of the system - the primordial basis of Tibetan metaphysics.
Rimpoche, rather that relying on abstraction and theoretical discourse, covers the subject in a way that is so jam-packed with teaching I had to stop every few pages to make sure I hadn't read a hundred. For me, that is real praise, because I tend to skim for the interesting points and ignore repitition and redundancy etc. I couldn't find anything to ignore in this book.
This is not a treatment of the jungwa as a topic - it is a workbook; a training manual on approaching meditation/tantra/shamanic practice from the standpoint of balancing and harmonizing the workings of the five elements in the physical body. It's a field guide to working with the Panchamahabhutas, or five great states, in a simple and practical way. I would recommend it to anyone interested in Tibetan mystical practices, Yoga, Asian spirituality, Tantra, or Alchemy - it's a good way to get started on a path that will take you where you want to go.
5 Million Stars: Help to Heal Yourself with This Book.......2006-04-17
An INDESPENSIBLE, highly special resource for those interesting in: delving into the elements as a way to heal self and world, delving into different meditative practices, and deepening the ability to abide in a healing and balanced state of being. Most helpful to me has been the emphasis on the WHY of spiritual practice...i.e., practice is only half complete if it is "me" centered. The teachings in this book are given with immeasurable clarity, light, and love. This teacher, this book, is a refuge, a light, and a blessing. May all beings benefit.

This should be a "must have" for every chocoholic! The recipes are positively lucious, and it is easy to get the necessary Ghirardelli ingredients by phone, or online for those underprivileged who don't live near a Ghirardelli shop. CAUTION: Reading these recipes can definitely be fattening!

This book is a must for anyone who collects duck calls........1999-05-21
Although Duck Calls of Illinois, 1863-1963 by Robert D. Christensen is limited to Illinois calls made prior to 1964, it encompasses all of the early documented history of the modern duck call. This is because all of the documented history happened to occur in Illinois.
This is a fascinating and very well done book that no duck call collector could possibly do without. Over 100 Illinois call makers are represented including Charlie and Haddon Perdew, Clifford, Grubbs, Martin, Trutone,Barto, Olt, Allen, Ditto, Leonard, the Glodo family, and the Roseberry family. The great photography will help in identifying many of your unknown calls.
$65 might seem like a lot of money for a book, but considering the rather limited market it is a bargain. The best $65 I I've spent since I started collecting calls.

This books is not for beginners.......2007-08-10
This book have really nice projects. I bought this book because it has a large range of projects, from baby boots to pillow cases to bags. There are lovely pictures of what the finally product should look like so that you can see if you are doing it right.
Great basics.......2006-03-09
This is a wonderful book. My girlfriend has it, and having looked through it, I am going to buy it for myself. It has some beautiful patterns for beginner crocheters. Basic patterns are usually pretty unappealing, but these are gorgeous. The instructions are easy to follow too.
Two minor criticisms. First, it would have been helpful to have the yarn specifications well set out so that yarn substitution would be easy. Secondly, a set of photos with the finished product fully laid out, rather than draped over things, would make it easier to determine what the finished product will look like.
Overall though it is a fantastic book and well worth checking out.

I ordered two celtic stencils books together months ago. I received the first one, and got an email saying the second would be shipped later. I NEVER received the second one. I will never buy through amazon again.
Celtic stencils perfect for airbrush.......2000-03-29
These stencils are perfectly cut on thin blue film. They are thin enough to use for airbrushing or body painting. You could use them for all other stencil work as well. The cover offers examples of color choices. The ties on even the most complicated stencil are spaced well for a balanced graphic design and an even application of paint.
A little heavy on the Griffins, but nice.......1999-11-11
There are three sheets of light blue plastic stencils, 8 designs. All are large, and one sheet is all griffin motifs. There are a couple of designs that include celtic knots, but I wanted more, or more intricate knotting maybe.
The designs included are nice though.

More of a long detailed article than a biography.......2004-09-12
I have been a fan of the enigmatic musical and lyrical creations of Paul Weller for quite some time. His second band - The Style Council - put out some great music and perhaps more significantly did so in a way that defied categorization and confused mainstream US audiences outside of the coasts.
This book is exhaustingly detailed, and looks at his career with the Jam, his Style Council days, and his solo work, with a level of inside detail not seen elsewhere. We have details about his political leanings and often misguided attempts at making political statements against Thatcher's England. The truth behind the self effacing humor that gave rise to the multitude of artsy and socially leading publicity and album shots is included, which everyone apparently took way too seriously and in the process missed the joke.
However, what are missing are the real insights from the artist himself. Of that we see very little. One is left with the continuing impression we are on the outside looking in. Aside from the smattering of quotes, the book is more a retrospective and journalistic report "on" Weller, as opposed to a book "about" Weller, or "by" him. This distinction was disappointing in that I expected it to be more autobiographical than it was.
Overall, a great oversight of his career, but for fans only. There are too few insights into the person behind the music to appeal to the average reader. While the content is exceptionally well written, researched and compiled, it will in the end likely please a narrow population of those already interested in the details.
A gratifyingly accurate account of a phenomenal artist..........1999-02-28
I feel that it behooves anyone with impeccable taste to seek out and listen to the essential recordings of the subject of this book. Paul Weller is a remarkable songwriter, a fine musician and an involuntary icon. Reed's product of research articulately underscores these points and also sheds light on other attributes. As an American, it's tough to find other "enlightened" individuals-however, those who have been exposed to Weller's body of work have subsequnetly become converts. In short, if you consider yourself a well-versed appreciator of excellent contemperary music and haven't heard of Paul Weller, I highly recommend that you seek out his recordings and read books like this one.
Good book about a great artist.......1999-01-19
When a man in one of 'the dirtiest businesses' (copyright Ian Brown) around, manages to come out the other end of 20-odd years of it, after three sucessful incarnations, countless hit singles and albums, and still has his integrity intact, what better subject for a bio can you get.
As for the book, the author remains unobtrusive in the story telling, which helps no end (see the Stone Roses bio) in the reading.
A great (continuing) story, parts of which have been well told before (A Beat Concerto, Mr Cool's Dream), but sucessfully well told again.
About as clear as you can get with out being in Paul's head!.......1999-01-15
From the moment I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down again (which was hard because it's really heavy). It's packed with more detail than an encyclopedia and is an absolute must for any Weller fan. Reed's writing talents are clear and focused, his use of descriptive imagery immaculate and the research that went into this book is exemplary. Though Weller doesn't talk directly to the author, the book is incredibly well written and includes hundreds of quotes here from friends, family and the Modfather himself to enrich and complement Reed's excellent biography. There's not much more I can say except go out and buy it!
