Suffering the Consequences is a fine novel irrespective of the genre (or sub-genre). The plot seems a bit far-fetched in places but the quality of the writing and characterizations make up for it. Lauren is a memorable heroine - likeable, exasperating, smart and sometimes hopelessly confused - in short, unusually real.

I've been disappointed by most spanking novels I've ever read. They've seemed so alien, like we all wanted to be captives in chateaus or headmasters at a Victorian boarding school. They never seemed to be about normal people who were into spanking. I first thought this one might be different because I kept reading all the good reviews that it's gotten. These reviews were well-deserved. This book is dirty, sexy and intense (just like a good spanking). It pushes all the taboos (like any really good book) and is really smart (you'll learn things about art forgeries). It's a great read, both for people looking for something to turn them on and for someone looking to understand the deep parts of spanking.

I knew this book was controversial before I read it, so I attempted to approach it with an open mind. Sorry folks, I just could not enjoy this story at all. Even given the medieval time frame and the heroine's plight; this story was creepy and demoralizing. Granted, some of the "love" scenes were hot, but they're supposed to be in a romance novel. The hero is mean spirited and I was never convinced that he loved Rowena. I have no complaints with the author's writing skills, but the whole concept of this story is one that should be passed by.

Loved it from start to finish. Have read it twice in the last ten years. Love the time period, the plot, the hero and heroine. All good. One of Lindsey's best! These idiots who write about how demeaning it is to women...blah blah blah, they should read something written by a ball- busting left wing lesbian (someone like Hilary Clinton). As for me I'm sticking with Lindsey.

This story was very HOT! If I could give it 6 stars I would. It is one of my very favorite stories. A little tie-me-tie-down - I'm all for it! If you're looking for politically correct and morally upright stories - I wouldn't recommend historical romances and definately not this! But if you like your romances spicy - this one's for you!
Controversial, but utterly compelling........2006-08-10
Okay, as you've no doubt realised from reading the other reviews here, this book is controversial. It has two rape scenes, beginning with a man being raped by a woman (against both of their wills) and followed by him exacting revenge by visiting the same treatment upon her. I don't like rape. I'm always one of those people who call for tougher penalties in rape cases, and if I were a narrow minded person I might have condemned this book for featuring rapes.
However, I must admit, I found this book utterly compelling. Sometimes it shocked me, I'll grant you, but this gave me a great excuse to explore my own feelings about the subject matter, and also gave me a view into the psyche of both the perpetrators and victims of such crimes. It was an intelligent work of fiction from a skillfull writer, and she didn't gloss over the realities of the situation. There were consequences of actions for the characters, who had both been essentially good people before being forced into a brutal situation not of their choosing, and they were also forced at later times to confront the feelings of guilt and shame that committing such acts brought out in them. They both grew from the experience, and became better people. They proved themselves worthy of forgiveness, and eventually love -- love that they both earned the hard way. I liked that. I like to think that people can redeem themselves, especially when they are not really bad people but rather just victims of tragic circumstance. Another thing, too, is that this book is set in medieval times, and they were harsh times. There was a reason they were called the dark ages -- dark things happened! To shine the light of modern ethics and standards on the behaviour of medieval characters is unrealistic.
I liked this book. It was exceptionally well written for its genre. I liked that it dared to go beyond the normal light and fluffy boundaries of your usual romance books. I liked that it featured a PREGNANT woman as its sexy leading lady, proving that yes, pregnant women can be gorgeous, and men do find them attractive! And I liked that the story was utterly compelling, to the point where I couldn't put it down. I laughed. I cried. I FELT for the characters. I cared what happened to them. It was realistic enough that it made me forget it was a work of fiction.
But when it all boils down to it, that's what this book is -- FICTION. The author clearly doesn't condone or encourage rape in any way. She is simply presenting us with a story, to entertain us, to make us think, to let us see the world from a different perspective. That's what the fantasy of books is all about. It's not the real world that you'll find in books. It's this other place, one where we can go to to see the things that aren't done in real life. And I for one enjoyed this book, and the places it took me to, controversial subject matter or no.
I think there will be a few people who will refuse to read or enjoy this book for fear that by liking it they might be showing that they approve of rape. But think about it this way: if you watch a horrifying slasher flick, does that mean you want to go out and murder people? No! If you watch a movie about a junkie, does that mean you condone drug use? No! This is the same principle. You don't have to support what the characters are doing to like the book. And just because you may end up liking the characters, doesn't mean you have to like everything they do. Intelligent readers will figure that out, and look beyond the controversy to see what this really is -- a good book.
Prisoner of My Desire.......2006-07-14
I was so disappointed with the first 1/3 of this book that I thought that I would give it 2 stars. There was rape but it was executed by a woman. It was just weird. I don't really consider what Warrick did as rape since she was willing because she felt so guilty about raping him. Weird. After about half way through it started to get better. It was just way too intense before that. Warrick was too nasty. Then all of a sudden you start to learn about all the nice things that Warrick had arranged and you kind of forgive him. Then it turns into a totally different book with two totally different characters who actually like each other. It was a very good and humorous read after that. All in all I didn't do any skimming and even when it was so intense and uncomfortable in the first half it was still very interesting.

Frederick Buechner - what else needs to be said. I am currently reading a little bit of this every Sunday morning to my congregation before I begin my sermon. I feel that sometimes the laity doesn't even know the questions to ask the clergy about how they preach the sermon, where it comes from, why that particular slant on a verse or thought.... So far, the readings have been well received. A marvelous book - real, funny, tragic and relavent.
A beautiful presentation of the Gospel.......2007-07-30
The title of this book is what caught my attention before I knew anything else about it. I knew that if it offered any defense to its title it would be worth reading. I was not at all disappointed and found its content both rich and colorful and the writing style as excellent as you could ask for. I would highly recommend this book for anyone open to a fuller picture of the gospel and especially to those going into the ministry who will be speaking the gospel--or telling the truth as Buechner presents it.

Telling the Truth: The Gospel as Tragedy, Comedy, and Fairy Tale muses, like the title says, that the Gospel is equal parts tragedy, comedy and fairy tale and explains that the best way to understand the gospel is to understand it through the truthful experience of one's life. The Gospel is tragedy, Frederick Buechner, the author, explains, because it is bad before it gets better--Christ dies before he is ressurrected. The Gospel is comedy, he says in the weakest section, because of its unexpectedness, how unpredictable it is. The Gospel is fairy tale, he says in a very moving section, because it is so impossible. Thus, he says, preachers should not try to package or dwindle its Message--it truly is impossible. At the same time, it comes forth in our lives--in the tragedy and the comedy--and it is important to show its reality in that way. Using literary and biblical examples, Buechner crafts a reassuring, remarkable book.
A compelling and beautiful book.......2004-07-17
I still struggle to understand why on earth this author isn't as widely read, valued, commented and acclaimed as he deserves to be... It is perhaps, as he suggested, because he seems to be "too religious for the irreligious and too secular for the religious". Whatever reasons there may be, few other writers equal the quality of thought and writing of Frederick Buechner on "religious" matters (whatever that means!).
In this little book, Buechner tackles in a brilliant way the vital questions of the significance and the meaning of preaching the gospel, considering it as tragedy, comedy and fairy tale. The result is simply superb: an extraordinary convergence of elegance, good quality writing and fresh spirituality. It's the perfect introduction to his work, along with "The Alphabet of Grace".
Give him the chance to prove his qualities... he will speak to both irreligious and religious...still more, he will haunt you!
THE LITTLE OLD MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN.......2003-05-09
When I took a class in "Christian Mythopoeic authors" I had to give a presentation on an author not discussed in the class. I presented on Frederick Buechner. My focus was on his novel, On the Road with the Archangel. While preparing for this, I found myself reading seven of his other books. Once I picked him up, it was hard to put him down. One of the books that I read was Telling the Truth. I have recently had the pleasure of re-reading it.
Buechner is a shameless recycler of themes and material (King Lear references are found almost everywhere in his writings). Most of his books don't even break one hundred pages. Still, I'd rather sort through Buechner's recyclables than the seven course meals of a lot of other writers.
Telling the Truth is the printed form of lectures Buechner gave on what it means to preach the gospel. He argues that the gospel must be presented in terms of tragedy, comedy, and fairy tale.
The gospel is tragedy because life can be exceedingly dark. We spend so much time trying to pretend, and sometimes believing that everything is fine and dandy. Yet sin is real and it causes death. We all live under the horror of a death sentence that will not be commuted. We live in the valley of the shadow of death. To try and deny this is not to preach but to play games. Too many Christ-followers try to skip over this integral part of life.
The picture Buechner paints of Jesus' silence before Pilate is jarring. It makes me uncomfortable. It must have freaked Pilate out too. This silence and the silence before the preacher speaks are the personification of what the tragedy of the Gospel is. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The wage of this "missing of the mark" is death.
The Gospel is comedy because God's provision for those who are his enemies is beyond the pale. It is in this hour of death--in the hour of our just execution--that God comes and gives us a life beyond all of our dreams and expectations.
The picture of Sarah's laughter at God's promise is the picture of our reaction when we first truly encounter the Gospel. A woman giving birth as she enters her second century of life looks easy compared to a God that we have slandered, rebelled against, ignored and even crucified loving us and redeeming us.
It is the hyper-reality of this comedy that makes the Gospel a fairy tale. We live in the drudgery of our everyday "real" lives. Yet the Gospel is more real than any of the fleeting, fading images that pass for our reality.
Buechner uses the picture of the Great Oz to convey the fairy-tale aspect of the Gospel. Just as Oz turns out to be a little old man behind a curtain, so the preacher's proclaiming of the wonder of the Kingdom looks insignificant, a lot of the time ridiculous, compared to the truth they bear.
The fairy tale of the Gospel is that all us, though seemingly frail and cowering behind the curtain of our lives, turn out to have power through Christ. The things we say and do while carrying the Gospel do indeed have eternal impact.
The Gospel must not be neutered by the understatement or ignoring of any of its elements. Sin has made our situation dire. God's provision has given us joy. The entire story offers us wonder.
I appreciate Buechner's Telling the Truth because he is creative in the making of his points. He paints vivid pictures. He does not soft-sell any element of his argument. This is a great book.

This is a top book on joints. This books deals exclusively with joints and is full of information. There are some jigs shown at the beginning with plans that will allow you to create some of the common or not so common joints. The book is written simply and is attractive. If you use your table saw a lot you will like this book but a router and bandsaw are used in some of the joints. In the back of the book there is a small gallery. If you ever had any questions about joints they are probably explained in this book. I am pleased with this book you should also be.
Engineered To Simplicity, A Powerful Book.......2005-01-28
Classic Joints with Power Tools by Yeung Chan is unique amongst books on wood working. Logical, concise, and written by someone with a wealth of experience. The unique thing is how adept he is in explaining it; yes, an excellent teacher.
When you see some of the pictures of work the author completed, which is included in the book in full color, as well as pictures of works created by others, you realize that this is the work of someone who practices what he preaches.
Simple yet profound. One tip for example, is when cutting stock, cut it 1/4" oversize, then re-joint it, and re-cut it to final size. You know the problem of cutting a board, and the internal stress makes the board move a little. Then you have an edge cup in your piece. By cutting and jointing it twice, you eliminate that. What a great idea.
This book is made for the master woodworker, and the beginner alike. For the master; so they can compare techniques, and glean a new bent on methods, and for the beginner, because they can learn the simple truth of the best way of creating the right joint, using the best procedure.
I can't recommend this book enough. It makes for a great read, and a convenient reference guide, due to the fact that it is laid out so logically. Buy it you won't be sorry.
Classic Joints with Power Tools.......2003-07-03
I know Yeung and have taken a number of classes with him. At first, I was surprised to hear that he was writing a book on power tools. He is the master of hand work skill and sensitivity. His philosophy of furnituremaking is one of respectfulness and thoughtfulness about the wood, the design of the peice and the process of creating it. This book on using power tools carries this philosophy through in the directness and clearity of his discritptions, explaination and instruction. His familiarity of the process of joinery is so complete that the information flows to the reader as if they are having a friendly converstaion with Yeung about the ins and outs of what to do and how to do it. I recommend this book fully.

This book is logically organized so that it's easy to find the information you need. The clarity of the text is amazing - no extraneous stuff, just a simple, clear description of the how to make the joint and why you would use it. The drawings and photos are EXCELLENT and really help support the text info. Yeung Chan is an excellent teacher!

POSADA IS A NEW STAR IN PIN-UP!.......2005-10-17
In a relatively short period of time Drew Posada has skyrocketed to fame to become one of the top glamour and pinup artists working today. Posada got his start working in comics for Image as well as some of the Image affiliate studios such as Top Cow and Wildstorm and other publishers like Avalon Studios. But Drew wanted to achieve acclaim for his pinup work and dropped out of comics to hone his work for over two years. His diligence would finally pay off when he was able to have his works exhibited at the prestigious Tamara Bane Gallery in L.A.
In the introduction, Posada explains his combination of old fashioned technique mixed with modern day technology. Posada begins his works by creating a drawing using pencil. The piece is then scanned into Adobe Photoshop where he completes it with primarily the airbrush. Posada explains he gets the level of photo-realism by using the single pixel or single dot brush and drawing each strand individually. This dedication to detail is evident in all of Posada's works. As with all of the full-color artist collections from SQP, a detailed index in the back provides the name of each piece and notes from Posada on what the work was created for, model's name, and other information.
Posada's work has what I would term as a soft luminescence to it, due in large part to Drew's masterful air-brushing technique. One of the first great examples in the book is the piece entitled "Blade" showing a nude blonde, kneeling and holding a great, glimmering broadsword. Posada provides a fantastic dominatrix piece with a gorgeous, green-haired beauty, wearing leather thigh-highs and green thong, with her legs spread almost impossibly apart.
"Wicked" was created for a cover to the comic book of the same name for Avalon Studios. This is a non-nude piece showing a woman lounging seemingly without a care as a demonic horror wisps ups from a magical tome lying at her feet. "Slayer" is one of my favorite pieces in the book showing a redheaded warrior maiden wearing a Vampirella-style outfit ready to swing a huge long sword. Speaking of Vampirella, Posada has a piece featuring that popular vampire from Warren that he sent to Harris Comics as an example...and they rejected! Someone was obviously asleep at the wheel.
After these 48 full-color pages of Posada's work, you're sure to be clamoring for more just as I was. A fantastic collection by a new star in pin-up art.

Passable Bio .......2004-11-19
A little too much gossip in this one but the authors do make attempts to capture the real Rod Stewart. A few stories about Rod's early days in music are here (since some of them are unique to this book, I can't say wether they are true) but too much is made of his love life--we can read about all that in People if we wanted to. But overall this is not a bad book.

A very stange (and wonderful) book.......2006-11-28
At first glance, this is nothing more than a typical soft cover fanzine loaded with pics. But authors Lester Bangs and Paul Nelson, two of Rolling Stones best writers in the 70s, make this something much more than a quick bio filled with myths and facts. Instead the two give their opinions on Rod's career from its beginning through 1980. (Nelson actually worked with Stewart at Mercury records in the early 70s). What makes this such an unusual animal is that for the most part, the pair really hate Rod Stewart's 1975-80 output, so much of the book is a criticism of what happened to Rod Stewart,--they often ponder if his selling out was something he could recover from and why it happened in the first place. (Thank God the pair are not around to see Rod's 2006 complete sell-out called "Still the Same....Great Rock Classics"). Such a book was destined to fail as fans really don't want to read a book criticizing their hero. But anyone with an open mind, and anyone with a desire to read great rock critics bemoaning the loss of one their favorite rock stars will find this a great book. I've read it about ten times and absolutely love it. Good luck finding it!

Not Bad.......2004-06-08
This is a fun book to read. It features a couple of minor mistakes but is mostly accurate. What sets this apart is the author's sense of humor. He doesn't take the subject too seriously, nor should he, but he does recognize Rod Stewart's prodigious, if often misused talents. I found myself laughing out loud on a couple of occasion as he pokes fun of Rod's womanizing and often poor taste in clothing. Rod fans probably won't find much new here but for those of us who find Stewart watching a fun sport, it is enjoyable to read yet another opinion of the Tartan Terror.

Named after one of his famous recordings - "Rod Stewart. Every Picture Tells A Story" - this book is great treat for all Rod Stewart fans. It has a large format, and it's filled with fantastic (some are very rare!) photographs that make you smile. The book does tell quite a story, page by page. About Rod's roots and beginnings, his style and his voice, and his way with blondes, too! It frankly examines Rod's musical, sartorial and love lives.

The Small Faces & Other Stories Uli Twelker & Roland Schmitt
This is an updated version of the essential biography of all things Small and Facial. From Small Faces Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane to their respective Humble Pie/Faces bandmates Peter Frampton and Rod Stewart, everything fans want is here - discographies, extensive quotes and detailed analysis of each album, whether group or solo.
Twelker and Schmitt are journalists who are informed enough to be absolutely trustworthy, but also fans passionate enough to re-energize their beloved music with new insights. The stories of many backing musicians and other supporting characters are also told, giving the book a "family" charm that is especially poignant in light of the tragic deaths of Marriott and Lane. (One detail that cannot go unmentioned: the inclusion of Mary Frampton's recipe for Marriott's favorite pasta!)
The result is not only the definitive Small Faces book, it's the standard for rock biographers to follow in terms of completeness and accuracy. But not as far as visual attractiveness, now that the publisher unwisely decided to cut costs by removing all of the original book's photos. Still, since the various Faces crossed the paths of so many other stars of the 60's and 70's, and each encounter is discussed here, "The Small Faces and Other Stories" is a must for all rock fans. The only problem: if there's any group you love more than these original Mods, you'll be sad that Twelker and Schmitt haven't written a book about your favorites as well.

This is merely a collection of fan stories.......2003-11-18
Okay for starters, the author did not write this book. He edited it. The majority of the people who wrote it (some of whom are my friends) are not professional writers and though a few of the stories are interesting, many already appeared in SMILER, the Rod Stewart fan club magazine. And the "interview" with Rod's sister is about two pages long and couldn't have taken more than three minutes to conduct. There are better books on Rod; this is merely a way for fans to see their name (including MINE!) in this book!

The Rod Stewart Companion is a definite must for any Rod fan. It is not your typical unauthorized biography of a legendary performer. Ed Wincensten has added an exciting twist for fans new and old alike. The book shares fan stories, small reviews and a compilation of other exciting material. It is apparent that Wincensten has gone to great lengths to research the material to provide accurate information. The book appeals to a variety of audiences, and doesn't lose the reader in complicated words. The layout combines the photos and stories in an appealing manner. It is an excellent coffee table book that will promise to stimulate conversation at any ocassion. It is a book for all dedicated fans, especially for those who would like to relate and share with others.
