Book Description
Tales of Passion, Tales of Woe is the much-awaited sequel to Sandra Gulland's highly acclaimed first novel, The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Josephine B. Beginning in Paris in 1796, the saga continues as Josephine awakens to her new life as Mrs. Napoleon Bonaparte. Through her intimate diary entries and Napoleon's impassioned love letters, an astonishing portrait of an incredible woman emerges. Gulland transports us into the ballrooms and bedrooms of exquisite palaces and onto the blood-soaked fields of Napoleon's campaigns. As Napoleon marches to power, we witness, through Josephine, the political intrigues and personal betrayals -- both sexual and psychological -- that result in death, ruin, and victory for those closest to her.
Download Description
In beautifully imagined diary entries, Sandra Gulland continues the story of Josephine's marriage to "the Corsican, " Napoleon Bonaparte. As Napoleon's march to power erupts in political intrigues and personal betrayals, Josephine witnesses the triumphs, as well as the death and ruin, of those closest to her. The novel is set at the end of the eighteenth century, when Napoleon is General-in-Chief of the Army of Italy, and his impassioned -- and at times disturbing -- love letters provide a fascinating counterpoint to Josephine's own journal. An impressive combination of historical fidelity and fictional artistry, Tales of Passion, Tales of Woe brings the legendary Josephine and the drama of her time to vibrant life.

Excellent.......2007-01-31
I love this series and am not looking forward to it ending. However, I am excited to get started reading the third book in this series having finished the first and second books. These books read so easily and the reader is drawn into Josephine's life -- the reader begins to feel like they truly know this woman.
If you like to read Historical Fiction then this series is definately for you!
Really compelling story of Josephine.......2006-08-26
Whether this piece of historical fiction sticks to the facts or not, I don't know, but the drama and empathy one feels in reading it makes you want to have known Josephine first hand. A delightful and compelling read.
A magnificent, poignant look into Napoleon Bonaparte's wife!.......2006-06-10
I read The Many Lives and Secret Sorrows of Josephine B a few years ago and hadn't thought of reading the second volume until now. Well, in all fairness, I hadn't known there was a second installment until now. This historical figure has always intrigued me for being the wife of one of the most powerful military commanders in history. Tales of Passion, Tales of Woe is another intriguing and insightful historical/biographical novel centered on the woman who shared her life with the man responsible for the European wars of late eighteenth century to early nineteenth century. This novel covers the couple's stay in Italy during 1786 to 1800. In diary form, Josephine tells us about Bonaparte's self-declaration as First Counsel and becomes all the more powerful while she deals with her in-laws who had taken an instant dislike to her and try to ruin her reputation with lies and careful plotting. And through her many trials, she never loses her desire to help others in spite of having a compulsive need to shop and then hide her debts and expenses. And then she moves the reader when she realizes that she's developed feelings for her husband. There are various twists throughout the novel.
Sandra Gulland paints a true and compelling picture of the historical Empress. She makes her likeable and yet conflicting and complex at the same time. Her trials with her in-laws are the most difficult ones for her and you feel her struggles while applauding her strength for enduring them with the patience of a saint. I also like how the author describes the ever-changing roles in Josephine's life as her husband gains political power and becomes a formidable figure in Europe. The historical accuracy is quite impressive and the footnotes were very insightful. I often don't like footnotes in fiction because they distract me from the story, but in this case I found them to be integral to the overall book because I learned things about Bonaparte that I hadn't known about before. I read The Many Lives and Secret Sorrows of Josephine B a few years ago and cannot remember every detail, but I do know that I wasn't able to appreciate Josephine B back then as I do now with this one. Tales of Passion, Tales of Woe is a great second offering in what is so far a great trilogy. Sandra Gulland has impressed me with this wonderful book and I look forward to reading The Last Great Dance on Earth, which will pick up when Bonaparte moves to the Tuileries Palace. I hope that this third and last installment will also cover all of the Napoleonic wars, Bonaparte's exile to Elba and his reinstallment on the throne of France, which leads to the battle of Waterloo. I can't wait to read Gulland's version of Josephine B and her insights during those events! (Though I think Josephine died the year before Waterloo.) Anyway, I recommend this wonderful book, right after you read The Many Lives and Secret Sorrows of Josephine B.
NAPOLEON AND JOSEPHINE, A LOVE STORY.......2006-05-17
Two days after Josephine's marriage to the funny little Corsican (on March 9, 1796), Napoleon leaves Paris to take command of the Army of Italy. Three and a half months later Josephine is summoned to Milan by Bonaparte. She leaves her beautiful home, her friends, and most importantly, her children for almost two years. During this period she must spend time with her husband's horrible mother and siblings and endure the most unbelievable and torturous therapies in order to get pregnant.
TALES OF PASSION, TALES OF WOE is book two in Sandra Gulland's trilogy about the life of Josephine Bonaparte. This novel only covers four years--the period between Josephine's marriage in 1796 through February, 1800 when the Bonapartes move to the Tuileries Palace. This takes place after the big Coup d'Etat when Napoleon overthrows the Directors and declares himself as First Counsel. In between the pages, written as a diary and peppered with a multitude of historical footnotes, we find Josephine, as usual, trying to help others. She continues to show exceptional patience when dealing with her offensive in-laws (who are constantly plotting against her, taking money from her and who spread lies about her). She also shops and shops and spends way too much money and then tries to find ways to cover her debts. She also is slowly falling deeply in love with her younger husband.
I really enjoyed reading this historical novel about characters I have always been intrigued with. TALES OF PASSION is not only beautifully written but is quite the page-turner. Included in this book are actual letters written by Bonaparte to the love of his life. Even though I know the tragic ending of this love story, I am still looking forward to book number three to see how it all transpires.
Entertaining Read.......2003-08-21
While not as engrossing as the first of the series, this book still successfully draws the reader into the intrigue filled & interesting world of Josephine Bonaparte. The author does a good job of recreating so many of the pivotal moments in the Bonaparte's life without loosing the personal insight of Josephine.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

praise for Sandra Gulland.......2007-07-20
These three books held me spellbound. I'm usually disappointed with series books, as I think most of the concentration is in the first volume--not so with this set. Ms. Gulland is an accomplished story teller. She has an imaginative way with words. I can hardly wait for her next series--hopefully there will be one soon.
So beautiful............2006-09-09
I just finished the third book in the trilogy and I am literally choking back tears because I hate it that there is no more left to read!
Sandra Gulland has brought Josephine and Napoleon's romance to life through these incredible books. You feel like you know them personally and you care about their lives. I learned more about France in that time period than I ever did in a world history class! And it was done in an exciting way. There were no boring "skim over" areas in these books!
She has done a first class job with this trilogy and she truly does justice to these famous historical icons.
Superb.......2006-02-21
This is a captivating and tactile series. Ms. Gulland obviously put an enormous amount of research into the books, and they are a great primer for the events surrounding the French revolution. The history, however, is a subtle bonus; the facts and historical figures are woven effortlessly into a rich narrative as told from Josephine's point of view.
A friend passed this gem on to me, and everyone I know who has read it since ended up reading late into the night, entranced by the story. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next.
Great historical fiction; readable without insulting your intelligence!.......2006-01-27
I expected very little from these books except a good beach read and I was SO pleasantly surprised at how well-written, readable and informative they were. I knew very little about this time in history and now want to know more (plus, I want to read more by Sandra Gulland!). These were SO GOOD! I went through the trilogy within a month's time and was so happy that I had #2 and #3 ready to read once I finished the previous books! I highly recommend these books.
Smooth and feminine .......2005-10-17
The Trilogy was a very sympathetic account of Josephine's life written in a very smooth and readable style. The thee books read like one book. The style had a very feminine feel as it emphasized the emotions of the events that took place. I enjoyed the books tremendously.

You've gotta love Nina!.......2007-09-01
If you love paranormal romance stories, anything by Nina Bangs and you can't go wrong. I loved this book!!!
Weak.......2007-01-20
Tedious reading, I wanted it to be over. Didn't hold my interest to want to know what would happen. The last 80+ pages were better since mysteries were being solved. Chars weren't that interesting. I didn't find much creativity to delight me other than Sparkle's damage to the enemy at the end.
Brilliant Bangs does it again!!.......2006-11-18
Some people seem to not get Bangs' Woo Woo Inn. Sorry they miss the boat. I howled at this book from opening par graph, quite unladylike snorts and sniggers.
She gives you dark and sexy vamps, but this time a bit more. It sexy, sizzling, edgy, erotic and down right funny! I am ready to check in at the Woo Woo in for a sweet vacation from reality anytime.
not as catching as her other ones.......2006-09-27
As much as I'd like to give this a better review, I just can't. The novel presents several problems stirred up by our cosmic troublemakers and others but none of them quite really are interesting enough to hold my attention. It almost seemed that we had to have three different issues (to kill according to Clan law, to fall in lust and why the catnip attacks) in order to keep the reader in the book. Of the three, only one of them had a satisfying resolution, in my opinon.
Nina Does it Again!.......2006-08-26
I have to agree with Deborah MacGillivary when she said in her review that Nina Bangs was..."an imaginative, incisive author who skillfully weaves sensuality, hot sex and belly laughs, which leaves me howling and wanting more. I have enjoyed all her works, but I think Taste of Darkness is Dead Bang Bangs - her best novel yet." I have recently started reading Nina Bangs novels and was partially disappointed in my first one, the Pleasure Master. I liked the book up until the ending, but liked it enough for me buy another one to see if it was just me or the story. A Taste of Darkness is the exact opposite. It's well written, humorous, and exciting. Reinn is sexy to the max and I hated when the book ended. You are kept on edge wondering when Kisa would transform into her unusual cat shape (don't want to spoil the story for you). Loved the character Sparkle and her obsession with sex. Loved how Nina solved the conflict in the end with the vampires...great job. Liked how she brought in characters from her other stories. You felt like you in were in on secret. If you want a great romantic adventure with an unusual twist, then buy this book. Watch out for the wereduck!

Lost Money Maker.......2006-08-21
This book is a nice filler between seasons, but there are a few things that don't necessarily follow the storyline from the show. A major event and location is discussed in this story that, to believe, the location should have been "in" the show. The caves that are mentioned in this book are not the same as the caves the survivors live in as another reviewer stated, but they had a profound effect on some of the regulars like, Locke, Michael, and Hurley, that you would think that we would know more about this place.
It is nice to find out a little background about some of the other survivors of the flight, I just hope that the stories do not stray too far from the main theme and that as more information is released in the series, it coincides with these books as well. (i.e. descriptions of where people sat on the plane, names of passengers, and locations listed.)
Nice attempt at a story, but I think more research and closer ties to the series may be needed. If this is just a way to make some dough with the LOST stamp on the cover...then Bravo.
Overall, I would rate the overall story "ok" with a "needs improvement" in the relate to the series category.
Worst book EVER.......2006-06-18
This book is one of the worst books I have ever read, the author has no idea what's going on in LOST the portrayal of the characters is so off the mark that's it laughable I was so disappointed in this book that I actually threw it out in the rubbish bin. If you like LOST and need something to do in-between seasons or episodes bang you head against the wall it would be a far better use of your time
That was pretty bad........2006-04-27
I am not sure why there are so many spinoff books of the show like this, or better yet why they get published. This book kept me fairly interested in the beginning, but it just fell very, very flat.
The ending is extremely STUPID, and absolutely corny.
Don't bother with this book, it wont fulfil your need for the show between episodes.
This is just bad.......2006-04-21
These things are just getting worse. Why do I buy them?
The first hint should be that the back of the book names the main character as "Nick Hadley" and throughout the actual novel the main character's name is "Jeff Hadley". Is the publisher paying any bit of attention to these books?
The book is about a man who is stranded on an island after Oceanic Flight 815 crashes there. The characters names are the same. However that is where the simularity with the show of Lost ends. None of the characters act or talk like themselves and the author can't decide if the caves are somehow an evil place where no one goes or if some of the castaways live there.
There really should be a rule that if you write a Lost novel you need to actual watch the show. It's a popular show, how hard can it be to find a halfway decent author to write these things?
I don't recommend buying this book. The only reason why they can get away with such poor quality is because they stamp the word "Lost" on it and stupid fans like me buy it. Don't be like me.
Books Ok.......2006-04-14
I love the TV show Lost and watch it faithfully every week. I turned to these books as a filler when the reruns are on, and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. They're interesting, but the show is constructed in such a way that so much of what you see means something and hints at what is to come, and there just isn't a way to do that in the books without messing up the series. A similiar book I enjoyed, that reads kind of like the show, is An Actor's Nightmare. If you like the show, you should check it out. It's better than these books. Still, I'll probably keep reading the Lost books too. Fans are fans. :)

Book Description
Following the success of Ideas Behind Modern Chess Openings comes this complete repertoire for Black that allows players to dominate the game right from the start. Award-winning openings expert Gary Lane provides every expert tip, trick, and trap in the book, and chess grids throughout demonstrate key lines and accelerate the learning process. All the games are annotated throughout, in the same appealing easy-to-follow style that has made Lane (Find the Winning Move, Grand Prix Attack) one of the most popular chess writers in the world today.
Customer Reviews:
A very good chess repertoire book for Black.......2005-12-19
I like this chess repertoire book. The lines are relatively easy to learn and for the most part, they're reasonably safe. The book is quite readable, and the games are generally recent. And the author appears to have useful advice on how to handle almost all of the popular lines that are being played against the moves he recommends.
Against 1 e4, Lane recommends the Center Counter. And he recommends the variation 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Qxd5 3 Nc3 Qd6. I think this is playable, and I think the lines Lane recommends after 4 d4 Nf6 are okay (I do wish Lane had said something about 2 d4, 2 e5, and 2 Nf3, though). Lane also gives us the option of trying the Kurajica variation, where Black answers 4 d4 with 4...g6, but I do not recommend this. I recently tried a skittles game in this line (I had White), which went: 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Qxd5 3 Nc3 Qd6 4 d4 g6 5 Nf3 Bg7 6 Nb5 Qd8 7 Bf4 Na6 8 Nc3 (Lane does not discuss this move for White). And now Black had a problem. If 8...Nb4 9 a3 Nd5 (9...Nc6 10 Nb5, or 9...Na6 10 Bxa6) 10 Nxd5 Qxd5 11 Bxc7. If 8...Nb8, White could repeat moves with 9 Nb5 or just try 9 Bc4 with an advantage. If 8...Nf6 9 Bxa6. So the game continued 8...b6 9 Bb5+ Kf8 10 Ne5 Nf6 11 Bc4 e6 12 Qf3 Rb8 13 Nc6 Bb7 14 Bxa6 after which White won easily. I'm glad I did not have Black in all this!
The author also gives us several chapters on the Chigorin. This is a solid defence, and Lane recommends it not only with 1 d4 d5 2 c4 Nc6, but with 1 d4 d5 2 Nf3 Nc6. And he wants us to threaten to transpose into a Chigorin against the English as well, with 1 c4 Nc6. If White plays 1 c4 Nc6 2 g3, we're advised to try 2...e5 3 Bg2 g6 4 Nc3 Bg7. Lane now gives his recommendations against 5 e3, 5 e4, 5 d3, and 5 Rb1. If I had White, I'd play 5 Nf3 here, but this ought to transpose into the line Lane gives for 5 Rb1.
Versus 1 b3, I've always played 1...d5. But Lane recommends a line which I now prefer, namely 1 b3 e5 2 Bb2 Nc6 3 e3 d6 4 Bb5 Bd7 5 Ne2 a6 6 Bxc6 Bxc6 7 0-0 Qg5. Given this, I hoped to see Lane recommend 1...e5 versus the Orangutan, 1 b4. Instead, he gives 1 b4 d5 2 Bb2 Qd6. While this seems okay, I think I'll stick with 1 b4 e5 2 Bb2 Bxb4 3 Bxe5 Nf6 here.
One opening most repertoire books don't mention is 1 g4, The Spike. And there's a good reason for it; it's inane. Still, Lane does give us a good defence against it, starting with 1 g4 d5 2 Bg2 c6. Actually, I think it is safe to play 1 g4 d5 2 Bg2 Bxg4. You merely have to make sure not to blunder by playing ...e6 at a point where Qa4+ will win your Bishop.
1 f4 is the Bird. It's often played as a Dutch with a move in hand. But that extra move rarely does White much good, and Black often takes advantage of White's early and overly committal pawn moves. Lane has a good (if unusual) line against it, starting with 1 f4 d5 2 Nf3 Nc6. But I do think that the more normal 2...Nf6 is even better. When I had to face the Bird in a tournament game, I tried 1...e5 and was lucky to win. Lane refuses to recommend this on the grounds that White can transpose into a King's Gambit. While I feel that Black is fine in the King's Gambit, I'll agree with Lane here, as I think that Black is better off avoiding 1 f4 e5 in any case.
The author recommends some solid lines against 1 Nf3 and 1 g3 (based on 1...d5 versus both). But I am a little puzzled at his recommendation against 1 Nc3. He gives us a line starting with 1 Nc3 d5 2 e4 d4. This is probably okay, but I think it is unnecessarily tame. Worse, if we play his lines, we'll see this position not only after 1 Nc3 but after 1 e4 d5 2 Nc3. So I would prefer to see a line in which we take that pawn (maybe starting with 1 Nc3 d5 2 e4 dxe4 3 Nxe4 Bf5). In addition, White does not have to play 2 e4 after 1 Nc3 d5. With White, I'd play 2 d4 here. That does give Black a choice of getting into a French defence with 2...e6, a Caro-Kann with 2...c6, a Dutch with 2...f5, a Nimzovich after 2...Nc6, or a Veresov after 2...Nf6. This position can also arise after 1 d4 d5 2 Nc3, of course. I think Lane ought to have recommended something for Black here.
In spite of a few minor omissions that I've noted, I think this is an excellent book, and I strongly recommend it.
Chess Openings Made Easy.......2005-08-12
This is an easy to read book that attempts to give the player with the Black pieces an opening against just about everything. I think it just about does the task with a look at the Chigorin against 1 d4 and the Centre Counter against 1 e4. They all have a modern twist in an effort to make it easier to absorb. There is plenty to get excited about when it comes to beating mad openings such as 1 g4 and the more sane 1 b3 amongst others. I would guess it is aimed at players below 2200 but with my rating of 1930 I think it is a good book to lean openings quickly and easily.

Customer Reviews:
a look at the antiques and used-goods trade.......2005-07-06
Leslie takes the reader on an enjoyable and instructive journey through the world of flea markets, tag sales, auctions, antique shops, and other outlets where used and antique items of all ages and price levels exchange hands. Not having much money as well as prompted by the desire to shirk the "rampant materialism" he found in large chain stores, malls, and mainstream retailing, Leslie made the decision to buy only secondhand goods when he needed something despite the extra time this often required, with no guarantee that he would ever find what he was looking for. But before long, these drawbacks were put out of mind as the author became ever more involved in, and fascinated and delighted by what he found in this supposedly marginal, but thriving and populous area of American society. "In the secondhand culture, I have discovered the joys of a genuine American market, unfettered buying and selling, which most first-level retailing has lost." Leslie has become friends with many dealers he has met. The author's ventures into all aspects of this secondhand culture from major international auction houses, regional and local auctions and flea markets, neighborhood tag sales, and also the world's largest and longest flea markets also serve as a guide for anyone wishing to become more involved in this market as either a buyer or seller. Leslie teaches at Siena College in upper New York, which also happens to be a prime area for the secondhand market he was drawn to and colorfully and fully recounts.

Very Helpful with Basic Advice.......2006-03-09
Wonderful advice with clear illustrations. The sample budget listed in the book is financially on target-unless, the reader is looking for something really posh. (www.poshtots.com for most beautiful furniture). Excellent resource guide is listed in the back chapters. Economical but good unpainted furniture similar to what is illustrated, can be found at (www.woodyou.com). City Furniture at www.cityfurniture.com has excellent choices for beds.
For the "murals" shown in the book, the reader can probably use wallpaper or partial "stick on" to create a smilar look, in order to keep cost down. Items can be found at local Art/Craft Store (Pearl or Michels).

Gotta Love This!.......2005-10-26
This is a magnificent idea source for decorating a child's room. Everything is in color and what colors they are, too! There are one to three pictures per page. All ages of children's rooms are represented and they even have a small section on children's bathrooms. I first saw a library copy, but fell in love with the book so much that I decided to buy one for me. I'm a librarian and this is the nicest book I've ever seen on the topic. Happy reading and looking.

A dynamic atlas of the fundamentals of design for motion and interaction
Responding to the dramatic growth in digital media in recent years, academic institutions around the world are introducing the element of motion into graphic design courses.
Motion Design provides design educators, students and professionals currently working in, or desiring to enter, the discipline of design for motion and interaction with a solution-driven roadmap for negotiating the territory.
Motion Design also addresses the fact that, as different strands of media converge into one digital form, practitioners must respond with greater interdisciplinary collaboration.
The book describes what the designer must decide before any software is loaded: the fundamentals, process, and methodology. It goes beyond software, to focus on effective solutions, making it both a design resource and an educational reference. Commercial, academic and artistic applications of animated graphics are used to illustrate how the elements of space, time and motion affect the traditional, print-based understanding of graphic form and communication.

Solid, competent and readable biography of Syd........2007-07-22
This is a very well researched and written book with many fascinating details about Syd's life. We are lucky to have it, as Syd is not exactly George Washington, inspiring biography after three part biography.
Also, much is not known about Syd. If you are interested in learning more about him, I highly recommend this readable and insightful work. But there will always be much that we will not know about this fascinating artist... this book is a good place to start.

If you like Pink Floyd's music, after read this book you are going to love it and you are going to understand lots of things about lyrics. Thanks Syd, wherever you are now!
Shine on.......2006-09-25
A good, concise biography of Syd's rise and retreat from stardom. Not as detailed as Julian Palacios's "Lost in the Woods", which includes several excerpts from this book.
newer edition on the way.......2006-09-10
To reflect the recent passing of "Syd" the book will be re-released (other details available through Omnibus Press).

Customer Reviews:
For All Fans.......2005-09-02
I, like many people, and many more to come, became a Pink Floyd fan after their best work had been completed. However, I (like many others) have been so taken with the music that I had to do some research on the somewhat mythological founder and now insane recluse. This book is a definite page turner for anyone who is truly interested in Syd Barrett or Pink Floyd.
Syd Barrett - legendary founder of Pink Floyd.......2001-07-25
If you haven't heard Barrett's material, this book is a really good place to introduce yourself to the man behind Pink Floyd. If you have, this book will undoubtedly enlighten you on the origins of Pink Floyd and Syd's subsequent demise. Crazy Diamond is a thoroughly researched book which is sympathetic to Syd's material. It portrays him as a vulnerable person who couldn't cope with the pressure of having to perform, after having almost single-handedly written the Floyd's suberb debut album Piper At The Gates of Dawn. A fantastic read . . . buy this book!
Until the real thing comes along.......2000-01-12
A good enough book, full of stories, reminiscences, apocrypha. Unfortunately the writing is not that great, so all the trivia doesn't really give you a feel for who Syd Barrett was and why he's so fascinating. The definitive Madcap bio is still to be written, but for now this'll have to do...
Okay.......1999-01-29
This is an amusing enough read, though rambling and somewhat poorly written. We don't really gain too much of an understanding of the man or his music, but then information about both has always been scanty, and this books does its best to at least find out the truth about reported incidents of his life.
